Cutelyst 2.7.0 released, async is back!

System & Utilities

Cutelyst a Qt/C++ Web Framework just got a new version. This time bringing back proper async support.

Perl Catalyst Framework was conceived as a sync/blocking framework, due that the Mojolicious framework was created, NodeJS and a few other web frameworks have pushed the async programming to the web. Performance wise being async doesn’t mean you get faster response times, rather the opposite, the need to unroll stack and make extra calls makes a CPU bound application slower.

But depending on the problem to solve it allows you to serve more users at the same time, using the same CPU cores. A typical modern application might receive a request from a Phone App then do a REST API call to an external API which might take 2ms or 200ms for the reply. While waiting for the response, typical sync/blocking applications can’t process more requests, or have to spawn more threads increasing RAM consumption and leveraging concurrency to the OS scheduler. On an Async web application, you can process another request while you wait for the previous request, thus possibly making the ...read more...

Interview with Noemie Scherer

System & Utilities

Could you tell us something about yourself?

Hi! I’m a European Krita user.

Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both?

I’m kind of in-between. I finished art school not too long ago, and I’m hoping to find a job or commissions so I could keep painting and actually earn money from it. I also do 3D and programming, but I’d love to keep doing all three without having to abandon any.

What genre(s) do you work in?

I like to try out different things, but for my main style, I’d say… illustrative? One thing’s for sure, though: my favorite theme is animals.

Whose work inspires you most — who are your role models as an artist?

I don’t really have one artist that I look up to, but more like a series of temporary stylistic crushes. Right now I’d say oddsbod, the video game Transistor by supergiant games, illustrator and video games 3D artist ...read more...

Last week of early birds!

System & Utilities

This is the last week of early bird tickets for foss-north 2019. The program has not yet been set, so getting one of these tickets, you trust us to deliver a great conference – something that we’re very thankful for.

We do have some parts of the schedule fixed: the trainings and some initial speakers.

The trainings are open enrollment courses at a bargain price, where parts of the dividends goes to financing the conference. This year we have two great trainers: Michael Kerrisk of manpage and The Linux Programming Interface fame, and Chris Simmonds, the man behind the Mastering Embedded Linux Programming book and a trainer since more than 15 years. The trainings held are: Building and Using Shared Libraries on Linux and Fast Track to Embedded Linux. These are both one day courses held in a workshop format.

Browsing through the replies to the call for papers, I am convinced that the 2019 foss-north will be the best one this far – and the past three ...read more...

Nanonote 1.1.0

System & Utilities

Several interesting changes landed in Nanonote recently, time to release version 1.1.0.

There are a few fancy indentation improvements: pressing Tab when the cursor is at the beginning of a list item now indents the whole line, making it fast to create sub lists. Thanks to Daniel Laidig for this contribution. Conversely, pressing Enter on an empty list item now unindents the line, then remove the list bullet.

URL detection has been improved to allow the +, % and ~ characters. This should greatly reduce the number of partially highlighted URLs.

The application is now available in Spanish and French, thanks to Victorhck for the Spanish translation.

Deb, rpm and source packages are available on the project release page. I hope you like this new version!

PySide2 on Raspberry Pi 3b+ with Raspbian Buster

System & Utilities

PySide2, or Qt for Python, is becoming more usable: since it has landed on PyPi, it is easy to install on almost every PC. Unfortunately, this does not apply to the RaspberryPis. Actually, there are only wheels for 64 bit x86 (and 32bit on Windows), not ARM. And there's a reason for this: the actual Raspbian Stretch has way too old packages for PySide2 to work. To get PySide2 on a RaspberryPi, you'll need Rasbpian Buster, which has not been released (even though there are repositoryes for an upgrade). Then, you can use the packages already compiled for Debian armhf (which are not in the Raspbian repository, at this moment). This is not straightforward, expecially for beginners. So I made an image, ready to be written on a (at least 16GB) microSD card. This image has Raspbian Buster with the main Qt5 and PySide2 modules. I've also switched the desktop environment from LxDE to LxQt.
You can find the image here:
https://www.codice-sorgente.it/raspbian-buster-pyside2-lxqt/#English
In that page you'll find also links to the Debian Qt5 and PySide2 packages for armhf, if ...read more...

Call for Answers: Survey About Task Assignment

System & Utilities

Professor Igor Steinmacher, from Northern Arizona University, is a proeminent researcher on several social dynamics in open source communities, like support of newcomers, gender bias, open sourcing proprietary software, and more. Some of his papers can de found in his website.

Currently, Prof. Igor is inviting mentors from open source communities to answer a survey about task assignment in projects. See below the description of the survey and take some time to answer the questions – the knowledgement obtained here can be very interesting for all of us.

Hello,

My name is Igor Steinmacher, and I am a professor at Northern Arizona University.

Along with some other researchers we are currently studying the strategies that mentors use to assign tasks to newcomers to Free/Open Source projects.Your experience is very important to us given the limited number of people that mentor or guide newcomers in FOSS projects.

Facebook AccountKit with Qt/C++ on Android

System & Utilities

Facebook’s AccountKit is an authentication service that can use your email or phone number to login to your services, it doesn’t require that the user has a Facebook account, just a valid email or phone.

The cool thing about it is that it sends SMS for free, and although sending SMSs is cheap being free of charge is something you might want to look when creating a new App, in fact here in Brazil some big Apps do make use of it.

So long story short story I wanted to add this to my Qt Android App.

Thanks to the great help of Kai Uwe Broulik who had give some tips on the past on how to call Java code I started with this same approach:

  • Create a Java file
  • Put the Java code of AccountKit there
  • Call the static function of Java from C++

And… it did work BUT I was unable to get the result, this is because the Java code starts a new Activity and returns the result on a method that must be implemented ...read more...

This week in Usability & Productivity, part 52

System & Utilities

This week in Usability & Productivity, the KDE VDG worked very intensively on aesthetics. The Breeze icon theme gained a lot of attention, resulting in many improvements, and we now have a good number of icon designers diligently working through a backlog of issues. More is on the way too, with several enthusiastic new VDG members who combine an eye for design with strong technical abilities. Expect good things to come of this!

Introducing Kasa - The personal finance tracker for the hashtag era

System & Utilities
Screenshot_20181231_003822
Kasa - The personal finance tracker for the hashtag era. Randomized testing data displayed.

It's that time of the year again when daylight is only seen from office windows and the darkness of evenings comes way too early. Getting much more home time, I wanted to finally get a better overview of my spending. Fortunately we live in the age of apps - you need something? There's an app for it. I searched for some of that do-it-all-for-you apps, but privacy was my primary concern. Pretty much all the popular personal finance apps take your financial data and upload it to some server to crunch it. I find that completely unnecessary. It's just a bunch of numbers, why does it need to live on a remote machine where I have zero control over it and zero control over who has access to what I spend my money on? All I want is to get ...read more...

Krita in 2018 and 2019

System & Utilities

At the end of the year, we looked back on 2017 and looked forward to 2018, it’s getting time to repeat the exercise! On the whole, 2018 was a better year for Krita than 2017. We hit some major milestones!

We released Krita 4.0, which included Python scripting, the new, but sadly underpowered text tool, switched from ODG to SVG for vector graphics — and much, much more.

And after that, we released 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.3, 4.0.4, 4.1.0 (with the new reference images tool, session management and more), 4.1.1, 4.1.3, 4.1.5 and 4.1.7. That’s ten releases in one year, which means we’re getting closer to our goal of a release every month. Are we totally satisfied? Not quite… We had also wanted to release 4.2.0 this year, with all the work done by our Google Summer of Code students. Unfortunately, one essential part is still unfinished, and that leads to some extra instability when working with larger images. In the meantime, more and more new code accumulates ...read more...

KDE ports on FreeBSD 12 (amd64)

System & Utilities

FreeBSD 12 was released last week. I’m in the process of rebuilding my main workstation to all-flash (which means backups, disentangling ZFS pools, etc. etc.) and in the meantime installed 12-R to an older i3 I had lying around. KDE Applications 18.12 were released last thursday. Those are in ports, but haven’t made it around to the official packages yet. So here are some notes on almost-current KDE on almost-current FreeBSD:

Installing modern KDE: from a freshly installed 12-R system, getting to a KDE Plasma desktop is a matter of installing two metapackages: pkg install xorg kde5 . That will leave you in a state where you need to link .xinitrc to startkde .. rather old-school. For purposes of having a pleasant setup, pkg install falkon quassel sddm as well.

Graphics configuration: with FreeBSD 12, the Intel on-board graphics drivers have synced up with Linux KMS. Since I’m running an Intel box with iGPU, I installed package drm-kmod and drm-fbsd12.0-kmod, and added the kernel module (as instructed by the pkg-message):

sysrc kld_list+="/boot/modules/i915kms.ko"

This week in Usability & Productivity we did a lot of work on our Plasma 5.12 long-term support release and performance improvements for KIO and Baloo (many of which are not individually significant enough to be mentioned here, but will add up to some great improvements over time). KDAB Talks at Qt World Summit Berlin

System & Utilities

KDAB is presenting two great talks at Qt World Summit. At 13:30, you can get an in-depth look at a new concept for designers and developers with James Turner.

At 14:30, Milian Wolff will be presenting some of KDAB’s renowned opensource tools, some of which, like Hotspot, he created himself.

Streamlined integration of 3D content straight from 3DS Max and Blender into Qt3D

with James Turner

Qt 3D is now established as the ideal 3D rendering engine for cross platform applications needing to integrate 3D content with 2D interfaces in a seamless way. The scene graph lets developers import and control geometry and materials, while the frame graph can be used to build advanced rendering  effects with ease.

However, just as in the case of 2D content, best results are achieved when designers and developer share a common experience and toolset. Yet the tools used to author 3D scenes, the geometry, the materials, the lighting, the animations, are all very different from what most developers are ...read more...

Getting Started With Qt for WebAssembly

System & Utilities

We’ve previously blogged about some of the features of Qt for WebAssembly. In this blog post we’ll take a look at how to get started: building Qt, building your application, and finally deploying the application.

If you would like to know more about this topic, then please join me for the Qt for WebAssembly webinar on November 27th.

Emscripten

The first step is installing emscripten. Please refer to the emscripten documentation for how to do so, and also note that Qt requires a unix host system: GNU/linux, macOS, or Windows subsystem for Linux. When done you should have a working em++ compiler in the path:

$ em++ --version
emcc (Emscripten gcc/clang-like replacement) 1.38.16 (commit 7a0e27441eda6cb0e3f1210e6837cae4b080ab4c)

Qt for WebAssembly applications are also Emscripten-based applications. Qt makes use of many of its features and so can application code.

Qt

Next, install the Qt 5.12 sources, for example using the online installer:

qtmaintenancetoolsources ...read more...

Accessibility update – Kickoff, Kicker and KWin improvements

System & Utilities

Chrys took up the role of coordinator, fixer and new master of KDE accessibility, which I think is just fantastic. We have been working on what he decided to be most important, mostly chrys fixing issues to make things work with Plasma and screen readers. After getting Orca to read desktop icons he spent quite some time to improve the various start menus.

With so much fresh energy around I started poking at KWin, which was a bit scary, to be honest. It was fun to read code I hadn’t looked at before. In the end, after I spent a while working on a huge work-around, it turned out that we could enable the task switcher to work with relatively little code added. The main issue was that KWin does really not want to give focus to the task switcher. My first attempt was to write sub-classes of QAccessibleInterface for everything in KWin. That started to work, but during some debugging I realized that KWin was actually creating the regular representations for its UI, it was just not properly ...read more...

Qt applications with Cargo

System & Utilities

This blog shows how Qt applications can be built with Cargo. The goal is to make compiling them as simple as installing Qt and running

Rust Qt Binding Generator (Logo by Alessandro Longo)Rust Qt Binding Generator (Logo by Alessandro Longo)

The crates qrep and mailmodel are examples. You can try qrep with

qrep is a minimal GUI for ripgrep.

qrepqrep

You can get started quickly with your own Rust Qt application by copying the folder templates/qt_quick_cargo from the Rust Qt Binding Generator repository.

Why Cargo?

In previous blogs we built applications with CMake. CMake is probably the most widely used tool to compile Qt software. CMake uses Cargo to build the Rust parts.

CMake is a familiar tool for Qt developers, but not for Rust developers. For them, CMake is a unneeded hurdle. Rust Qt Binding Generator can be used with only Cargo. To do so you ...read more...

Interview with Autumn Lansing

System & Utilities

Could you tell us something about yourself?

I’m a comics artist and web developer from Oklahoma City. I’ve been creating comics and artwork for most of my life, though I didn’t seriously start making comics until several years ago. I’ve also worked variously as a writer, editor, layout artist, concert promoter, and art gallery director, among other things.

Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both?

At this point in time it’s mostly something I do for enjoyment, though I occasionally create artwork for someone else. I’d love to make comics my career, but so far that possibility hasn’t presented itself.

What genre(s) do you work in?

I mostly create comic art in the science fiction and/or horror genres, often with a lot of humor in it. My style ranges a bit. While I sometimes enjoy working in a colorful painterly manner, lately I’ve been happier working in grayscale with mostly flat colors. I find it less distracting. It allows ...read more...

Celebrating KDE’s 22 years and embracing new contributors at LaKademy 2018

System & Utilities

Almost two weeks ago we had the seventh edition of the LaKademy, an event that has been held in Brazil since 2012. As you may know LaKademy’s main goal is to get together the Latin American contributors of KDE community and to attract new ones. We don’t have talks like in Akademy because the event’s idea is to be a space for sprints. So people work in small groups doing specific tasks like fixing bugs, developing new features or translating software and documentation.

davLaKademy banner.

LaKademy 2018 was the biggest one so far. This year we had 23 participants of which 12 were newcomers. This is an impressive number of new people attending the event, the biggest number in all these years. We were very happy to have them all working with KDE projects in Florianópolis, an amazing island located in the South of Brazil.

Sizeable donation from Handshake Foundation

System & Utilities

We’re glad to announce that we received donation of 100,000 USD, which is part of 300,000 USD offered to our KDE organization. Quite appropriate for a birthday present, as the KDE project just turned 22 this last weekend! It’s true recognition for KDE as one of the world’s largest open source project.

More information: KDE e.V. receives a sizeable donation from Handshake Foundation.

QML Weather

System & Utilities

I recently took some time to develop a photo frame style home automation control panel. The idea is to control some common tasks of my home assistant setup from a panel instead of having to rely on the phone. To hide the panel, it currently act as a photo frame until touched.

The build is based on a Raspberry Pi 2 with the official touch screen attached and a USB wifi dongle. Nothing fancy, but still good enough.

One of the features that I wanted was a weather forecast, so I decided to use Yr’s xml weather as a base for this. The result is the YrWeatherModel QML item.

The weather forecast overlay.

The presentation side of things is the fairly straight forward piece of QML shown below, resulting in the overlay shown above.

KDevelop 5.3 beta 1 released

System & Utilities

KDevelop 5.3 beta 1 released

We are happy to announce the release of KDevelop 5.3 Beta, almost exactly twenty years after KDevelop's first official release! Here's a brief summary of what's new in this version:

Analyzers

With 5.1, KDevelop got a new menu entry Analyzer which features a set of actions to work with analyzer-like plugins. For 5.2 the runtime analyzer Heaptrack and the static analyzer cppcheck have been added. During the last 5.3 development phase, we added another analyzer plugin which now is shipped to you out of the box:

Clazy

Clazy is a clang analyzer plugin specialized on Qt-using code, and can now also be run from within KDevelop by default, showing issues inline.

The KDevelop plugin for Clang-Tidy support for now is developed and released independently. It is scheduled to be merged into KDevelop for 5.4.

Internal changes

With all the Analyzers integration available, KDevelop's own codebase has been subject for their application as ...read more...

Libre Application Summit 2018

System & Utilities

Earlier this month i attended Libre Application Summit 2018 in Denver.

Libre Application Summit wants to be a place for all people involved in doing Free Software applications to meet and share ideas, though being almost organized by GNOME it had a some skew towards GNOME/flatpak. There was a good presence of KDE, but personally I felt that we would have needed more people at least from LibreOffice, Firefox and someone from the Ubuntu/Canonical/Snap field (don't get annoyed at you if I failed to mention your group).

The Summit was kicked off by a motivational talk on how to make sure we're ride the wave of "Open Source as won but people don't know it". I felt the content of the talk was nice but the speaker was hit by some issues (not being able to have the laptop in ...read more...

Nextcloud 14 and Video Verification

System & Utilities

Today the Nextcloud community released Nextcloud 14. This release comes with a ton of improvements in the areas of User Experience, Accessibility, Speed, GDPR compliance, 2 Factor Authentication, Collaboration, Security and many other things. You can find an overview here

But there is one feature I want to highlight because I find it especially noteworthy and interesting. Some people ask us why we are doing more than the classic file sync and share. Why do we care about Calendar, Contacts, Email, Notes, RSS Reader, Deck, Chat, Video and audio calls and so on.

It all fits together

The reason is that I believe that a lot if these features belong together. There is a huge benefit in an integrated solution. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs and wants all features. This is why we make it possible to switch all of them off so that you and your users have only the functionality available that you really want. But there are huge advantages to have deep integration. This is very similar to the way KDE and GNOME integrate all ...read more...

Come meet KDE in Denver - September 6-9

System & Utilities

This week, Aleix (KDE eV Vice Predisdent), Albert Vaca (KDE Connect maintainer) and me will be in Denver to attend the Libre Application Summit 2018.

Libre Application Summit is unfortunately not free to attend so even if i'd urge you to come and see the amazing talks we're going to give I can see why not everyone would want to come.

So I'm going to say that if you're in the Denver area and are a KDE fan, write a comment here and maybe we can meet for drinks or something :)

Notes on the Akademy 2018

System & Utilities

This year I attended to my fourth Akademy, the annual KDE summit.  The conference is always a good place to meet old and new KDE people. This year we had a lot of new faces showing up there, which is very good because new people might mean new ideas coming, more hands to work on KDE projects, and more mouths to spread our message From Brazil we had three new contributors attending for the first time, Lays, Caio and Eliakin, from a total of eight Brazilians who participated this year. I think we can count with Tomaz and Helio although they are living in Germany

As part of the conference program we had some good talks and the usual BoF’s (Birds of a Feather) sessions. This year, as part of our effort to get more people from Latin America to participate to LaKademy, the Latin ...read more...
