Sizeable donation from Handshake Foundation

System & Utilities

We’re glad to announce that we received donation of 100,000 USD, which is part of 300,000 USD offered to our KDE organization. Quite appropriate for a birthday present, as the KDE project just turned 22 this last weekend! It’s true recognition for KDE as one of the world’s largest open source project.

More information: KDE e.V. receives a sizeable donation from Handshake Foundation.

QML Weather

System & Utilities

I recently took some time to develop a photo frame style home automation control panel. The idea is to control some common tasks of my home assistant setup from a panel instead of having to rely on the phone. To hide the panel, it currently act as a photo frame until touched.

The build is based on a Raspberry Pi 2 with the official touch screen attached and a USB wifi dongle. Nothing fancy, but still good enough.

One of the features that I wanted was a weather forecast, so I decided to use Yr’s xml weather as a base for this. The result is the YrWeatherModel QML item.

The weather forecast overlay.

The presentation side of things is the fairly straight forward piece of QML shown below, resulting in the overlay shown above.

KDevelop 5.3 beta 1 released

System & Utilities

KDevelop 5.3 beta 1 released

We are happy to announce the release of KDevelop 5.3 Beta, almost exactly twenty years after KDevelop's first official release! Here's a brief summary of what's new in this version:

Analyzers

With 5.1, KDevelop got a new menu entry Analyzer which features a set of actions to work with analyzer-like plugins. For 5.2 the runtime analyzer Heaptrack and the static analyzer cppcheck have been added. During the last 5.3 development phase, we added another analyzer plugin which now is shipped to you out of the box:

Clazy

Clazy is a clang analyzer plugin specialized on Qt-using code, and can now also be run from within KDevelop by default, showing issues inline.

Screenshot of KDevelop with dialog for project-specific Clazy settings, with clazy running in the background

The KDevelop plugin for Clang-Tidy support for now is developed and released independently. It is scheduled to be merged into KDevelop for 5.4.

Internal changes

With all the Analyzers integration available, KDevelop's own codebase has been subject for their application as ...read more...

Libre Application Summit 2018

System & Utilities

Earlier this month i attended Libre Application Summit 2018 in Denver.

Libre Application Summit wants to be a place for all people involved in doing Free Software applications to meet and share ideas, though being almost organized by GNOME it had a some skew towards GNOME/flatpak. There was a good presence of KDE, but personally I felt that we would have needed more people at least from LibreOffice, Firefox and someone from the Ubuntu/Canonical/Snap field (don't get annoyed at you if I failed to mention your group).

The Summit was kicked off by a motivational talk on how to make sure we're ride the wave of "Open Source as won but people don't know it". I felt the content of the talk was nice but the speaker was hit by some issues (not being able to have the laptop in ...read more...

Nextcloud 14 and Video Verification

System & Utilities

Today the Nextcloud community released Nextcloud 14. This release comes with a ton of improvements in the areas of User Experience, Accessibility, Speed, GDPR compliance, 2 Factor Authentication, Collaboration, Security and many other things. You can find an overview here

But there is one feature I want to highlight because I find it especially noteworthy and interesting. Some people ask us why we are doing more than the classic file sync and share. Why do we care about Calendar, Contacts, Email, Notes, RSS Reader, Deck, Chat, Video and audio calls and so on.

It all fits together

The reason is that I believe that a lot if these features belong together. There is a huge benefit in an integrated solution. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs and wants all features. This is why we make it possible to switch all of them off so that you and your users have only the functionality available that you really want. But there are huge advantages to have deep integration. This is very similar to the way KDE and GNOME integrate all ...read more...

Come meet KDE in Denver - September 6-9

System & Utilities

This week, Aleix (KDE eV Vice Predisdent), Albert Vaca (KDE Connect maintainer) and me will be in Denver to attend the Libre Application Summit 2018.

Libre Application Summit is unfortunately not free to attend so even if i'd urge you to come and see the amazing talks we're going to give I can see why not everyone would want to come.

So I'm going to say that if you're in the Denver area and are a KDE fan, write a comment here and maybe we can meet for drinks or something :)

Notes on the Akademy 2018

System & Utilities

This year I attended to my fourth Akademy, the annual KDE summit.  The conference is always a good place to meet old and new KDE people. This year we had a lot of new faces showing up there, which is very good because new people might mean new ideas coming, more hands to work on KDE projects, and more mouths to spread our message From Brazil we had three new contributors attending for the first time, Lays, Caio and Eliakin, from a total of eight Brazilians who participated this year. I think we can count with Tomaz and Helio although they are living in Germany

As part of the conference program we had some good talks and the usual BoF’s (Birds of a Feather) sessions. This year, as part of our effort to get more people from Latin America to participate to LaKademy, the Latin ...read more...

The Joy of GSoC :)

System & Utilities

Wooo... this is the last day of coding phase of GSoC. I am writing this blog to share my experience and work done in the coding phase. I want to specially thank my mentor David Rosca for his help, suggestions and reviews. This was my first exposure to the KDE community and I am proud that it was great. I really enjoyed the whole program from proposal submission - intermediate evals - then now this final evaluation. Also, I had learned a lot working on my project. Frankly speaking, I didn't knew about i18n and l10n much but with the help of my mentor now I have a quite good understanding of how these works and are implemented. I can truly say this was one of my best summer vacations.

The code will soon be merged with the master branch of falkon. You can see my status report page for more details about the work done during GSoC. Also in the last weeks I have implemented an extensions page for falkon similar to about:addons in firefox. Below is the ...read more...

Musing About Communities Size and Activity: A Follow-up

System & Utilities

In my previous post I played with the team size and activity metrics on several communities and see what would come out of it. Interestingly, to me this wasn't necessarily the most interesting of what I posted (it's rather basic in what it presents) but somehow it's the one which triggered the most comments, especially in the KDE community. Looks like I struck a nerve. :-)

Anyway, it got quite a lot of good comments, so I thought it deserved a follow-up post with a different tone. For the record, I generally try to avoid putting too much of my own personal opinion in posts where I present metrics. I think it's sane to try to shield facts on the data from my biased position. It's obviously super hard, if not impossible. Indeed, at a minimum I'm forced to mention potential events in the time frame considered (if I know them)... it's risky, but still I do it because otherwise things would be just very dry and super annoying to read! And I think that's why the previous post ...read more...

Krita in the Windows Store: an update

System & Utilities

We’ve published Krita in the Windows store for quite some time now. Not quite a year, but we’ve updated our Store listing almost twenty times. By far the majority of users get Krita from this website: about 30,000 downloads a week. Store downloads are only about 125 a week. Still, the income generated makes it possible for the Krita maintainer to work on Krita full-time, which would not have been possible otherwise.

That’s good, because combining a day job and working on Krita is a sure recipe for a burn-out. (Donations fund Dmitry’s work, but there aren’t enough donations to fund two people at the same time: we have about 2000 euros per month in donations.)

What’s not so good is that having an app in a Store basically means you’re a sharecropper. You do the work, and the Store allows you whatever it wants to allow you. You’re absolutely powerless. All the rules are made by the Store. And if there’s one particular rule that gets interpreted by the Store curators in a way that’s incompatible with the ...read more...

Interview with Takiro Ryo

System & Utilities

Could you tell us something about yourself?

Well, I’m not really sure what to tell about myself. My name is Takiro, I’m from Germany and I’ve liked drawing since I was a little kid although it wasn’t very easy because I never had decent paper and pens. Art wasn’t seen as an actual thing in my family, I guess. I started to take art more serious as a teenager, when I was 14 or 15, with traditional art. Everyone was into Mangas and Anime back then and so was I. I started out with poorly drawn fanarts of my favorite anthropomorphic characters before doing my own thing, and my style was typical Manga style until just a few years ago, when I transitioned to a more painterly style, trying to emulate the look of traditional paintings. I still do fanarts sometimes but nowadays I mostly paint anthropomorphic and feral animals often in magical fantasy settings inspired by video games and books.

Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both?

Video game emulators for Linux

System & Utilities

What started as an effort to package Ishiiruka-Dolphin for Linux has grown into a broader project. It grew in silence but I thought it’s time I formally announce it.

My Open Build Service repository ships release versions of:

And it ships regular Git snapshots (for very active projects almost daily) of:

Everything in this repo is 100% legal. Games, firmware, or BIOS dumps are NOT included and will never be (unless someone makes a legal reimplementation of those). Some emulators are still highly experimental (such as Decaf) and don’t even work for anything but simple homebrew stuff.

It’s not always possible but I try to target the current and the last Fedora releases, the ...read more...

80bit x87 FPU

System & Utilities

Once again, I got surprised by the 80 bit x87 FPU stuff.

First time was around a decade ago. Back then, it was something along the lines of a sort function like:

struct ValueSorter()
{
bool operator (const Value& first, const Value& second) const
{
double valueFirst = first.amount() * first.value();
double valueSecond = second.amount() * second.value();
return valueFirst < valueSecond;
}
}

With some values, first and would be smaller than second, and second smaller than first. All depending on which one got truncated to 64 bit, and which one came directly from the 80bit fpu.

This time, the 80 bit version when cast to integers was 1 smaller than the 64 bit version.

Oh. The joys of x86 CPU’s.

Working at Nextcloud

System & Utilities
I've been around in communities like KDE, openSUSE, Mandrake/Mandriva and others... and various open source and closed companies. Seen some do a good job. Seen others be mismanaged. This one: the most fun. Serious.

Working at Nextcloud is special. For one, we're a distributed company. Is it hard? Well, yes and no. Working from home is great with such a motivated team with very little management overhead and good communication. Our company is entirely built on it, that is why it works.

As an example, while our head of sales lives in Hannover, the rest of the sales people is spread over Berlin, Switzerland, Stuttgart... Engineers can be found in Germany, Netherlands, Spain, even Croatia and as far as Cape Verde. I'm sure I forgot some countries. Our biggest office in Stuttgart has less people than we have in Berlin!

But we connect in person: roughly every second month, at a company-wide meeting in a ...read more...

Cracking the HDD

System & Utilities

I’ve learned that IBM Travelstar 40GB drives use glass platters. I learned this the fun way, by bending one in a vice, with a big set of pliers. It went snap, tinkle — a different sound from other drives. And after that the bendy drive was usable as a maraca!

So why was I bending drives in the first place?

Well, I volunteer some of my time at a local second-hand place called Stichting Overal. It is an “idealistic” organisation that uses the revenue from second-hand sales to support various projects (generally small-scale development, like funding the construction of sanitation in schools). Like most second-hand stores, there’s clothes and ancient kitchen appliances and books and used bicycles .. and also an IT corner.

I help out Tom, a local school kid who has run the IT corner for some time. From time to time a PC or monitors or random IT crap is dropped off for re-use, and we apply triage. Yes, that is a lovely 486DX2, but it is still going into the bin. For various reasons, ...read more...

A Better Menu Experience in Plasma (PROPOSAL)

System & Utilities

Launchers in an OS have become the central point of access and interaction with system content. It is the main way that most people will interact with applications and files. In recent years, other OSs have become increasingly interested in beefing up their application menus. Plasma currently has 3 launchers integrated. Users are asked to select one or the other by right-clicking in the “start” menu button and switch a different launcher. The interaction is somewhat quirky but it is effective.

I wanted to contrast our iteration with something that might be more interactive, more straightforward and help users find the desired content faster. Here is an idea about that.

Please note that these mockups are just images. The layout, color and interaction is what I am trying to discuss. Is there merit to this con

vergence idea? Does it solve any issues?

Launchers

Plasma currently has 3 launcher styles added. I believe all of them can be converged or made to look similar. However, given user requests, we have to keep 3 of them and they currently don’t ...read more...

VDG does not exist

System & Utilities

tl; dr: VDG is not a single entity with “official” decisions or something different from what KDE is: everyone is responsible for his/her actions and words. Recent Martin Flöser criticism about small changes with less global vision is true.

VDG (originally Visual Design Group, now just V Design Group) was created by Jens Reuterberg during the KDE4-Plasma5 transition, it included experts from different areas and they did a great work, with a solid and coherent vision about UI/UX. Since KDE4 times, developers did an awesome work both implementing visual and usability changes and improving Plasma’s performance and stability.

Since then VDG changed a lot, losing contributors and acquiring others and because of the great work done with Plasma, developers of other KDE software started to ask for VDG’s input. We didn’t have good organizational skills, and I know we lost a great contributor just because following VDG’s discussions became impossible. More people joined discussions on Telegram groups and the small-fixes phase began.

Since the beginning sentences like “VDG said…” made little sense, but considering what VDG is ...read more...

Playing with coroutines and Qt

System & Utilities

Hello!
I was recently wondering about the status of the coroutines in C++ and I found several implementations. I decided to choose this one for my experiment.
It’s simple and easy to use and works in Linux and Windows.

My goal was to try to find a way to have code running asynchronously without waiting for signals to trigger my slots and avoiding to call QCoreApplication::processEvents or creating a QEventLoop in the stack.

My first approach was to convert the processEvent function of a custom event dispatcher into a coroutine and use yield. After several failures, I decided not to continue this way.

My next attempt was to convert a slot into a coroutine:

QTimer::singleShot(0, std::bind(&coroutine::resume, coroutine::create([]() { ... });

Inside this lambda, the CPU will execute the code until the yield, it will jump back to the application event loop.
The full code is:

#include \"coroutine.h\"
#include <QtCore>
#include <QtWidgets>

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
QApplication app(argc, argv);

Revisiting my talk at FOSSASIA summit, 2018

System & Utilities

Earlier this year, I had the chance to speak about one of KDE community's cool projects that is helpding developers erase the line between desktop and mobile/tablet UI's with ease. I'm referring to the Kirigami UI framework - a set of QtQuick components targetted at the mobile as well as desktop platforms. This is particularly … Continue reading Revisiting my talk at FOSSASIA summit, 2018

Calamares on Krypton

System & Utilities

Calamares is a Linux system installer (and some day, a FreeBSD system installer, but that is a long way off) which is distro- and desktop-independent. OpenSUSE Krypton is a live CD and installer for the latest-and-greatest .. but it already has an installer, so why try Calamares on it?

Well, sometimes it’s just to show that a derivative could be made (there is one, called GeckoLinux), or to experiment with tools and configurations.

Calamares has a script called deploycala.py, which like every gaping huge security hole is expected to be downloaded from the Calamares site, then run. It is recommended to only use this in a VM, with a live CD / ISO image running. What the script does is install a basic dev environment for Calamares, install up-to-date dependencies, and then it builds and installs Calamares. That then gives you a way to experiment, installing with Calamares from an already-set-up live CD.

The deploy script supports many different package managers and host systems, so it’s just a matter of running python3 deploycala.py -n ...read more...

Volume Control in KDE Connect

System & Utilities

Definitely one of the best use cases of KDE Connect is this: Watching a movie while laying in bed or on the couch and controlling your unreachable computer from your phone without needing to stand up. Thanks to our new media control notification you can pause and skip without even unlocking your phone. But what if the movie is too silent? If your media player is implementing the MPRIS2 specifications you are already lucky and can control your players volume from KDE Connect. Plasma Browser Integration even adds that for Browsers. But what if your player doesn’t support it (looking at you, Spotify)? Or you want to control your system volume? Then you are out of luck. Until soon. We are adding a plugin to KDE Connect that enables you to control your system volume from the phone. How cool is that? Another neat little trick is tapping on the volume icon to (un)mute the system.

Exploring Contributors Centrality Over Time

System & Utilities

At the end of my previous post we concluded with yet another question. Indeed, on the 2017 KDEPIM contributor network we found out that Christian Mollekopf while being a very consistent committer didn't appear as centrality as we would expect. Yet from the topology he seemed to act as a bridge between the core contributors and contributors with a very low centrality. This time we'll try to look into this and figure out what might be going on.

My first attempt at this was to try to look into the contributor network on a different time period and see how it goes. If we take two snapshots of the network for the two semesters of 2017, how would it look? Well, easy to do with my current scripts so let's see!

Alright, it still looks similar to the picture we got for the full 2017... Christian is still on the outter rings of our network and bridging toward low centrality nodes. ...read more...
