Thomas Zander (ThomasZ): Two conferences about ODF

System & Utilities

In the week of November 2nd I travelled to a little village in Italy called Orvieto. The reason for going to this lovely town is two conferences in a row.
The first one is the OpenDocument plugfest. The second is the openOffice.org conference, both of which were new experiences for me.

The ODF plugfest is a meeting where different implementors of a standard come together and come up with user scenarios and test how well they port between the implementations.
So you’ll see a document created in KWord being opened in OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office and investigations started when the resuls are not as expected.

I did a presentation at the event of the progress made in the Qt (QTextDocumentWriter) and KOffice implementations of ODF and naturally the Maemo Office reader and last mentioned the Nokia sponsored officeshots.org node we are preparing.
The next day I had another presentation where I showed an interoperability issue with right-to-left languages. Several bugs were found in OpenOffice.org and MSOffice and a discussion followed to share the concepts of right-to-left text ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): An alternative to KRecipes

System & Utilities

Every now and then I post a recipe on this blog, and sometimes I muse about KRecipes, and there have been a few KDE events (the launch event in Mountain View, or CampKDE) where I’ve baked cookies or done other foodie-oriented activities. You can usually count on me to go looking for interesting food (there is no guinea-pig to eat in London, BTW) at events as well. But this winter season, I’m looking at something different. We are looking at something different. The “we” here is the FSFE, and we’ve decided that there’s worse things to do than cook a lovely dinner for some of our friends. So as part of our 2009 Fundraiser the executive team (comprised of at least three affirmed foodies — I’m not sure we have anyone who can function as a sommelier though) will be cooking a lovely dinner for one lucky sponsor of the FSFE.

Perhaps I’ll be able to practice this weekend with Claudia in Berlin — I seem to remember we got along pretty well cooking dinner in Paul’s ...read more...

Andrea Diamantini (adjam): rekonq 0.3.0. Ending point, starting point.

System & Utilities

Just a micro blog today to say some facts. In case you live under the rocks, rekonq is a software that has just reached the “perfect social browser” status. In fact all rekonq users tend to try contacting me asking for some new features… :D

Ok, stop joking and let’s see facts:

  • rekonq 0.3.0 has been released today. I’m aware that a lot of distro are just releasing some packages about. If yours is not on the list or you prefer compiling code, you can find it through kde-apps or sf.
  • With this release I can proudly say I reached my first goal: I feel I’m having “something” in my hands and a lot of people to share with. And I’m really happy about.
  • We have a lot of things in our TODO list here and I really can’t wait starting implementing them. So, I really need this release to restart my happy developing nights :D ...read more...

Andreas Marschke: Security even behind the little blinky wall

System & Utilities

So you are a unix/linux lover and like your system to be secure even against external intruders for examble when you run a small website(like me which is not yet online cuz I dont want to afford the domain) or a personal apt repository. This means Security Security Security.
Like me you might have a small headless machine standing around somewhere doing this job. But how do you secure something that is somewhere else and not your workstation and doesnt have a head(monitor) connected to it. Leaving alone the fact that you might need a keyboard/mouse. Well you connect to it via FTP/SSH/SFTP to transfer files and commands to it.
But the fact that its also avaiable via the web you might have some concerns. All these services working on open ports!

My recommendation is the brilliant and lovely Firewall Shorewall. It might take some time to get into it but I will lead you through. Lets have the thing that you are behind a router. And have a LAN of say 192.168.178.0/24(Means IP range 192.168.178.1- ...read more...

Witold Wysota: Little debugging helper

System & Utilities

Just wanted to share this code with you:

#ifndef DBGHELPER_H
#include <QString>
#ifndef QT_NO_DEBUG
# define DEBUG_FUNC_NAME DbgHelper dbgHelper(Q_FUNC_INFO);
#else
# define DEBUG_FUNC_NAME
#endif

class DbgHelper {
public:
DbgHelper(const QString &t);
~DbgHelper();
private:
QString txt;
static int indent;
static int colorIndex;
int myColor;
};
#endif

#include <stdio.h>
#endif

int DbgHelper::indent = 0;
int DbgHelper::colorIndex = 0;

static void DbgHelper_output(int color, int indent,
const QString &prefix, const QString &funcName) {
QString text = QString(4*indent, ' ')+QString(prefix+" "+funcName);
if(color>=0){
text.prepend("x1b[3"+QString::number(1+color)+"m");
text.append("x1b[39m");
}
#ifndef DBGHELPER_USES_PRINTF
qDebug() << text;
#else
fprintf(stderr, "%sn", qPrintable(text));
#endif
}

DbgHelper::DbgHelper(const QString &t) {
txt = t;
#ifdef NO_COLOR
myColor=-1;
#else
myColor = colorIndex;
colorIndex = (colorIndex+1) % 7;

DbgHelper_output(myColor, indent, "BEGIN", txt);
++indent;
}

DbgHelper::~DbgHelper() {.
--indent;

Cornelius Schumacher: openSUSE 11.2 and SUSE Studio

System & Utilities Last week we celebrated the release of openSUSE 11.2, the latest incarnation our fine green Linux distribution. It's a great release. People seem to like it. One quote: "OpenSuse stands out as a fine example of what a Linux desktop operating system can be."

Here at the SUSE Studio team we got quite some requests when openSUSE 11.2 will be available in SUSE Studio. Rest assured: We are working on it. There is some infrasructure to adapt, importing repositories, updating templates, upgrading Kiwi, and we are also planning to add a feature to migrate openSUSE 11.1 appliances to openSUSE 11.2, so you don't have to start from scratch, when you want to make use of the latest openSUSE for your existing appliances. It will need a little bit of time, but we'll add the support over the next few weeks.

So stay tuned, you'll soon be able to make use of all the openSUSE 11.2 goodness in SUSE Studio as well. I'm looking ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: Back from Marketing in Stuttgart

System & Utilities Had to wait for 1.5 hour in Frankfurt on the way back home, so I decided to have a look at the city. I've never seen the area around central station (hauptbahnhof for bloody germans). Right in front of central station there is plenty of entertainment, of an interesting variety. Bars which don't focus on beer - seems un-german to me, but I guess that other need has to be serviced even in Germany.

I recently saw the Red Light district in Amsterdam for the first time when I had H

Jason McDonald (Qt Development Frameworks): Qt 4.6.0 Release Candidate 1

System & Utilities

Today, we move another step closer to the Qt 4.6.0 release, with the shipping of the first release candidate.

This release improves on 4.6.0 Beta 1 by adding yet more bug fixes and documentation improvements, fine-tuning a couple of the new API’s, and incorporating various feedback from you, Qt’s community of developers and users.

The Release Candidate is very close to what the final 4.6.0 release will be. The main aim of the RC is to solicit feedback from the community and catch any remaining high priority bugs before the final release, which we expect will happen before the end of the year.

If you find a bug, we want to hear about it. You can submit a bug report and/or an autotest that demonstrates the bug via the public Qt Bug Tracker. If you know how to fix the bug, you can submit a merge-request to the public Qt source repository on http://qt.gitorious.org.

The Release Candidate is available as a source package (choose from .tar.gz and .zip versions), and as pre-built binary packages ...read more...

Sandro Andrade (sandroandrade): Announcing: The KDE Observatory

System & Utilities

Hello folks,

For still unknown reasons so far I woke up a day with repetitive and indefatigable thoughts in my mind: “you should implement a plasmoid” :) That scary voice whispered in my ears – “Everybody has a plasmoid !!” – and I answered – “No, no. Which plasmoid ? I have no idea !!”. Some days after, miraculous thunders falling from the sunny sky of Salvador da Bahia :) saved my soul. Your mission is:

The KDE Observatory

Keeping track of statistics and metrics in software development projects is not rarely a requisite activity for early evaluation of risks, quality management, and successful delivery of functionalities. KDE community provides amazing tools for such activities: commits bots, Krazy analysis, bug tracking, review board, mailing lists, etc. Why not bring these resources together in an integrated tool ? Even better, why not all those information right on your desktop ? :) That’s the ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): Busy Bees

System & Utilities

As you might have noticed from other blogs on PlanetKDE the KDE promo people have been quite the busy bees this weekend in Stuttgart. Getting together with great people, getting stuff done, having good beer and food -> great sprint. And of course a sprint with Jos and me has to include at least one proper group hug :D
group hug

(fltr: Valerie, Kenny, Martin, Claudia, me, Rainer, Justin, Jos, Eckhart, Ingo, Stuart, Daniel, Luca, Cornelius, Frank, Troy, Frederik)

It was a great weekend which got us a lot further to the 4.4 release announcement, the rebranding of KDE, a new KDE booklet to give out at events, a redesign of www.kde.org and more. It is amazing what you can get done if you get the right people together for 3 days.

Most important for me though was finally getting to know Ingo, Stuart and Luca. It was their first KDE meeting. I hope we introduced them properly (including group hugs and ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): KDE Imaging Sprint

System & Utilities I just wanted to say that I returned home from KDE imaging sprint now and want to say thank you again to our host and the organizer of the event Marcel Wiesweg. We got quite a lot of coding done, some errors in Digikam and the kipi plugins have been fixed on Windows, so it was a really positive sprint. Some fixes are still waiting to be committed. I met some people I didn't knew in person before, which was really interesting too.
So all in all, a good sprint and I am looking forward to next years imaging sprint in France ;-).

Milian Wolff (milianw): KDevelop

System & Utilities

Hey everybody!

If you are a KDevelop and/or Kate/Kwrite developer and do not read the mailing lists: There’s a hack sprint coming up in Berlin in 2010. I think there’ve been enough sprints in Berlin already so that you know it’s a great city for such an event. Though this time it won’t be at KDAB or Nokia offices, but at the Physics Faculty of the FU-Berlin. Since I (currently) work there as an IT admin, it was my first choice and worked out. I hope it will be a good location for the meeting. If you want to attend, vote on doodle:

http://www.doodle.com/vkyh9up9794zr4s8

But you probably also should register either on the KDevelop or KWrite mailing lists so I have some kind of way to contact you.

PS: in unrelated news I’ll do an internship at KDAB next year! yay

Stuart Jarvis: Promo Sprint Sunday

System & Utilities

I’ve completely lost track of how many days we’ve been here now – and Stockholm syndrome is kicking in with our slave-driving captor ;-) But I’m pretty sure yesterday was Sunday so that will do for a title for what I want to talk about.

In the morning we split off for a few little meetings and I was in the one discussing the Dot. Things have been going pretty well there with lots of stories getting published but there are a few things we need to sort out to make sure we get stories published on time (and at the right time) and we also really need to fix the broken links from old stories written for the old Dot.

We also discussed Camp KDE which sounds like it should be awesome so if you’re over on the side of the pond where keyboards seem to be lacking a working ‘u’ key (that’s why you keep saying color and honor when you mean colour ...read more...

Stefan Majewsky (majewsky): Levitation

System & Utilities

I usually do not write about stuff not related to KDE. But here is something I would like to share with you: The Levitation project is having a logo contest. If you do not know it yet, Levitation is an effort to rewrite MediaWiki on the basis of a Git repository, to allow for local branches and stuff. The project was started just two weeks ago in response to the controversy about notability criteria in the German Wikipedia. I wish the project all the best. After all, that’s something that, when it reaches production quality, could also be very interesting for the KDE documentation writers.

Ingo Malchow (neverendingo): KDE Promo Sprint - it's over now

System & Utilities This day has come to an end now, and with the promo sprint has ended. Unfortunately, i must say. It was a great experience, nice people, and i'd really to see them again in time.

Anyway, what happened today? As there was already much talk on the topics that needed to be discussed, this day was mostly filled with actually doing some real work on it. This included code and test the new structure of the kde site navigation, testing options we have and searching for improvements. I can't go into too much detail at this point, but once it comes out, you most likely will enjoy it. Really.

At the middle of the day each team presented their work. And of course, some things still needs to be done, but it's good to be at a point where you actually see what needs to be done in a clear fashion. Now that's actually my point of view, speaking as a newcomer to the promo world.

What can i take home with me?

Jos Poortvliet: marketing and more

System & Utilities Gush, the marketing meeting is almost over.

No, not because it's 10 at night, just because everyone is exhausted. Or it's just me being exhausted enough for all, I dunno, I only know I can sleep anywhere now.

Still, we accomplished a lot. I asked ppl involved in all topics to present the results for the group. Stuart will write a dot article about the meeting and of course include those results, so be on the lookout for that. I must admit we still haven't gotten to actual world domination so there still is a lot to do. Not the least of that would be finishing our work on a booklet and lots of other writing.

Aaah well, currently I mostly think about how nice it would be if there happened to be a bed just around the corner. Unlikely, given we're sitting in a large office building, but you never know. I can dream, right? Here? Please?

Picture time now.

Stuart Jarvis: Promo sprint: 2 – Stu: 3

System & Utilities

Ok, so I’m still not keeping up with the days too well, but technically I’ve had more blog posts than the sprint has had full days (I cheated by blogging on day zero). Anyway, this post is about day 2. I think.

KDE team seeks inspiration for rebrandingYesterday – day two – we started off with another discussion about the rebranding, repeating a few steps from the day before but coming quite quickly to some conclusions and a concrete proposal written up by Cornelius. This is still being discussed internally with some of the people who will be most affected and so I can neither confirm nor deny rumours that the workspace in 4.4 will be known as “Ferrari” and that Konqui is going to be retired and replaced by a prancing horse known as Shergar… There will be an announcement about the real names on the Dot in due course.

After that, we got down to work on the release announcement for the 4.4 ...read more...

System & Utilities

Short after KMyMoney was ready to run on Windows, Michaël provided us patches to make it run on OS X. A few fixes to the patches, plus some questions asked, and they are now commited. Now it runs on the three major platforms.

The patches we had to apply were mostly avoiding the --no-undefined parameter we use in Linux and some other compiler issues. No actual code changes for now. We wrapped it all around IF(APPLE) defines.

Lucas Murray (lmurray): Window tabbing merged

System & Utilities

It took a lot longer than expected but the KWin window tabbing branch has finally been merged with trunk. This now means that it is possible to manually merge multiple windows together by middle-click dragging the titlebar of one window over another.

Since the branch was not trivial a large "thank you" has to go out to the Google Summer of Code student Jorge Mata for his initial hard work on making KWin support tabbing. Not only that but another "thank you" has to go out to Hugo Pereira Da Costa from the Oxygen team for actually making a tabbing-compatible decoration that's not ugly and helping me find all the little annoying bugs in the decoration API along the way. ^_^;

Currently there are only two tabbing-compatible decorations: The default decoration Oxygen and a brand new minimalistic decoration that has been specifically designed for window tabbing called Tabstrip. Martin plans to eventually add tabbing support to Aurorae, the SVG-based decoration that will be shipping with KDE 4.4, ...read more...

Tom Albers: Digikam Sprint

System & Utilities

While the planet is flooded with reports from the marketing, promo and www sprint, there is another sprint happening in a beautiful place called Essen in Germany.

I arrived there in the afternoon. It was nice to finally meet the people behind Digikam and the kipi-plugins. A few years ago I learned C++/Qt hacking while working on Digikam. It was a wonderful time. Since then I’ve moved on, but I’ve returned to this sprint to give a presentation about Akonadi. As Akonadi is fully type independent, it is able to be used for Digikam. It would open a nice new set of oppertunities.

For example, you could organize your images while your offline. Not only the images on your local hard disk, but also on your Facebook, Flickr or Gallery based website. As soon as you connect to the internet again, it would execute all the moves. Can make that train trip to Berlin so much more productive, right?

Another feature would be to use your image based resources to attach an image as an attachment to an email. ...read more...

Luca Beltrame (einar77): KDE Marketing Sprint – Day 2(?)

System & Utilities

Well, there wasn’t a Day 1 for me (I got to the hotel too late to follow the first day of the meeting), so that is why I’m starting on day 2. To start, I need to say that I had never been to a sprint before: I am already accustomed to meeting for real someone from online, but for all the attendants, they had been just names or nicks on IRC. That means I was a bit nervous.

The first encounter worked out pretty well, actually. I went with the others to have a dinner out, and I got to talk to “famous” KDE people such as Troy, Lydia, or Jos. I also had the nice opportunity to meet up with my fellow forum administrator neverendingo, and we discussed a bit on how to improve the forums. In short, the evening was really nice. I even got to see a N900! I thought I’d never see that. A very nice piece of hardware, I’d say.

The following morning, aside a little incident (the other people forgot about me!) I ...read more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): Having spent a few days with his MacBook Pro…

System & Utilities

I recently blogged about Desktop Linux possibly having some core/fundamental problems that might be keeping it from enjoying mainstream adoption and 3rd party developer attention as compared to, say, OS X. To my immediate defense, I’ll say that it was actually more of a brain dump and rant (True Story!) than a well-thought-out dissertation on all of the issues at hand. The impetus in this case was:

  1. Frustration with a particular admittedly proprietary application that didn’t use to have any problems in Ubuntu 8.10, and since then has been nothing but trouble for me and roughly 90,000 other people. You may say that it’s unfair to fly off the handle at one proprietary application having problems and condemn all of Desktop Linux, but I do not think this is limited to only one proprietary application.
  2. A shiny new MacBook Pro in my possession and an epiphany of “this is what we’ve been working for, guys and we’ve been doing it for more than a decade and we’re still not there yet, why?”  And I’m ...read more...

Troy Unrau: Marketing Sprint: The Juggernaut Strikes Back

System & Utilities Blog is a funny word. If you repeat it fast enough while speaking aloud, you make a noise previously only known to the muppets. Blogblogblogblog... The people at the table here are looking at me strange.

Anyway, day 2 was, for the most part, slower than the first. This was possibly due to the German beer consumed last night by a number of our party. Nevertheless, Cornelius arrived and took us to task on choosing names for things that are now needing a name. More to be announced once we give the affected internal community some chance for feedback.

Also, the kde.org web remake is underway, with my hand-wavy mockups somehow being accepted, but for no good reason that I can tell. I'm not an artist, but I can draw boxes on a whiteboard with the best of them :P Hopefully we can get a few mockups up and available soon, coinciding with the new branding efforts. This meeting has essentially become branding central, and we're getting into hard core marketing mode.

We had some conversations about ...read more...

Peter Penz: Searching

System & Utilities If I compare the number of files on my current hard disk with the number of files I had 10 years ago, I'm quite amazed. How to deal with this increased number of files is topic of a lot discussions. Tagging, searching, filtering, relations, virtual folders... - terms, where from a KDE-developer's point of view Nepomuk comes to mind, which provides already all the technical base. Still there is the task to integrate Nepomuk into applications, so that users out there are able to benefit from this great technology.

It's a small step only, but at least one step further: During the last week I've integrated Addam Kidder's GSoC 2009 work into Dolphin. I know that some people don't see searching and filtering as "the solution" to deal with the increased number of files and I agree. Nepomuk offers a lot more, still the searching and filtering is a basic feature, that I personally require quite often during my workflow. The current state of the code is far from finished, still the basics are there now. ...read more...

Stuart Jarvis: Promo Sprint Day 1

System & Utilities

Ok, I’m getting these done pretty late (since it’s now well in to day 2).

KONSEC has provided us with a couple of nice conference rooms (both big enough to hold everyone, but also allowing us to split in to different teams working on different projects) complete with wired and wireless internet and even free hot drinks so we can all get a caffeine boost from time to time and stay awake :-)

As Troy mentioned already, one of the first tasks of the first day was sorting out the basic structure of the rebranding – separating the entity that produces our software from the software itself and really making it obvious that you can use KDE applications on Gnome, Windows, Mac, wherever…

It also gets us away from trying to find sensible ways of saying “KDE releases KDE” which arises when we have the same name for product and community. There’s still more discussion of branding issues (going on now) and we need to actually pick some names too :-)

In the afternoon ...read more...

it-s: Just a new wallpaper

System & Utilities Dear Planet,

Bothering you is fun, since you can't really away :D
/me is sadistic today

Unfortunately I have nothing serious to bother you with at this time, but just you wait till the promo sprint is over ;) From then on - it will be a torture chamber, I promise. For now, however I just want to share... *gasp* Yes, I do charity sometimes ;)

Recently Nunno called me up (on IRC) and told me KDE needs a change of style, so if I can come up with a wallpaper that is trendy and changing enough, Oxygen team will base the entire Plasma theme on it (or something like that anyhow). So I have been hard at work doing just that, so trying anyways. Unfortunately with me it's not that simple. I'm not a mad genius people think I am, and I don't come up with a great peace of art in five minutes (I wish I could). It usually takes me hours upon hours of sketching, probing, failing, and trying again, and again, and again. So by the end of the process ...read more...
