The Malware Problem

System & Utilities

Some of you might have heard about the Malware incident that recently has hit our friends from gnome-look.org. While some of you might chuckle about it because it hit the competition, there really is nothing to chuckle about, because the next target could easily be us .

Michael Jansen: Build-Tool 0.1.4 released

System & Utilities

Adjust the recipe to konversations move to git. No other changes.

If you installed build-tool as a gem just issue sudo gem update build-tool.

The tool does not migrate automatically. To migrate delete ( or move ) the previous konversation checkout, then rebuild konversation with kde-build build -u --from-scratch network/konversation.

Ruby 1.8 required

Build-tool requires ruby 1.8 for now. When i started it ruby 1.9 was still seen unfit for production use and noone was able to estimate how long it would be that way. It doesn't work with 1.9 currently and as long as opensuse doesn't provide a 1.9 package it will stay that way.

Peter Simonsson (psn): Konversation has switched to Git

System & Utilities

As many of you probably already know, KDE has its eyes set on moving to Git, the revision control system developed by the Linux kernel developers in 2005 (and now in use at a great many places). Everyone's favorite music player Amarok already made the switch in July of this year, and today Konversation has followed suit! The nitty-gritty follows, Q&A style:

Why Git?

Most Konversation developers have used Git for some time already, either on other projects or even for their Konversation work (via git-svn), and have developed a strong preference for it, especially due to the superior performance and the way it greatly improves the local workflow by adding powerful branching and merging features over a Subversion working copy. We're also looking forward to sharing in some of the benefits reported by the Amarok developers after using it for some time.

Another advantage of Gitorious specifically is a lowered barrier to entry for external contributors, thanks to the possibility of making personal ...read more...

Justin Kirby (neomantra): What’s going on in KDE promo land

System & Utilities

Just wanted to provide a few quick notices/updates to the community on some promo activities.  I know everyone is busy with the upcoming holidays and the 4.4 release on the way so let’s cut to the chase:

  • KDE apparel design help wanted! – The promo team is in the process of trying to build up some awesome new KDE gear for you all to wear.  We have an online store  that we’re setting up and would like some help from any interested design gurus out there that think they could make a cool looking t-shirt, hat, etc.  Email me (justin at neomantra DOT org) or the KDE-Promo mailing list or leave a comment…find some way to tell me how I can reach you and I’ll get you details on how to get started.
  • Camp KDE now has over 65 registered attendees…are you one of them?  Especially if you live in North America this is a great opportunity to come out, meet some of the long time contributors of KDE, meet new contributors, learn about the future direction of ...read more...

Guillaume DE BURE (gdebure): More usability feedback needed

System & Utilities Since I got many interesting comments on my last blog on Skrooge usability, I figured out I could once again request your valuable help, dear users, on one of the most difficult part... Let me introduce to you the current "Search and Process" interface :

The goal of this is to find a set of operations and apply them a transformation. Example:
Find all imported operations with Comment containing Acme, and set their Category to Clothes
Pretty useful huh ? I can safely say so, because it was not my idea, but Stephane's* ;)

Anyway, the current interface is, in my opinion, far from optimal, so I've been trying to make some proposals. The first one is for the search section:

Marcus Hanwell (cryos): Big Snow!

System & Utilities

As some of you may remember we moved up to Clifton Park, NY in September. From when I first met Bill at Camp KDE in January he told me about all the snow they got up here. To be honest I was starting to doubt him, and then we got some snow on the weekend and I was really excited. Today I woke up, looked out and saw we got a lot of snow! I am not disappointed, possibly a little overwhelmed...

Snow, lots and lots of snow!

I think I am going to like it up here, Dax loves it and William is not too sure what to make of it right now. They just plowed the road (not our big drive though), and so I may try to venture into work soon. Of course Dax and I had a big play in the snow, and I think we are going to have to buy a sledge as soon as possible.

System & Utilities

Winter is here, the snow is falling, the frost is crisp each morning and it get progressively harder to break the ice for the day's canoe.

Fortunately Kubuntu has just the thing to keep you snug in these cold months. From the davmor2 knitware shop comes the Kubuntu jumper range. Available in a selection of colours including beige with blue, beige with ligher blue and beige with cyan, it has been carefully crafted by designer extraordinaire Sue Morley over many months of hard work. Stuart Jarvis: The wow factor

System & Utilities
Wow, by Robin Gallacher (CC-by)

Wow, by Robin Gallacher (CC-by)

How do we get more people interested in KDE software? We can talk about it being Free (and free), point out that it does everything that the proprietary competition can do (if that’s true) but there is always a cost in changing software: you have to learn new stuff. Therefore our biggest openings are when the alternatives suck and so people are looking for change or when our stuff just leaves the competition for dead. The latter one is about the wow factor – something in our software that makes the casual observer sit up and take notice and think “I want that”.

The wow factor could be visual, but it needn’t be. Here are a few things that have prompted people who see me using KDE software to ask what the application is:

  • KWin – the desktop effects are really pretty slick now (this one works best on people who ...read more...

Richard Dale: JSmoke bindings KDE hello world working

System & Utilities

The Smoke based QtScript bindings are progressing well, and are now called 'JSmoke' in the style of 'JQuery' the JavaScript library or 'JScript' the .NET JavaScript implementation. In KDE promo-like words, I hope this will 'raise the brand recognition' of the state of the art KDE Smoke dynamic language bindings technology.

The project now has 24 QtScript plugins for the following libraries:

qtcore
qtdbus
qtgui
qtmultimedia
qtnetwork
qtopengl
qtsql
qtsvg
qtuitools
qtwebkit
qtxml
qtxmlpatterns
kdecore
kdeui
kfile
khtml
kio
knewstuff2
knewstuff3
kparts
ktexteditor
kutils
plasma
solid

There is a common 'libjsmokeruntime' lib that the plugins share. For running scripts there are two executables 'jsmokeapp' and 'jsmokecoreapp' for GUI and command line apps respectively. 'jsmokeapp' loads the qtcore and qtgui plugins and starts a QApplication. There still needs to be a 'jsmokekapp' which will start a KApplication, load the base KDE plugins, and run a KDE based script. Today I got a half Qt/half KDE app working. Here is the code:

qs.script.importExtension("jsmoke.kdecore");
qs.script.importExtension("jsmoke.kdeui");
qs.script.importExtension("jsmoke.kio");

function MainWindow(name) {
    KMainWindow.call(this, name);

    this.setObjectName(name);
    this.setCaption("KDE ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: Who is KDE? (continued)

System & Utilities In my previous blog I talked about who KDE is and how the web is full of cool blogs and podcasts and more about our community. In this blog a few more links ;-)

Check out the Blue Mint blog. Darn. This one is way cool for sure. The blogger (James Cain) aims to help and inform Linux Mint KDE users about their favorite desktop software. He started only 6 weeks ago but is very productive. Imho this blog would fit nicely on planet KDE, he might not be a developer but writes excellent and informative blogs. Or should we create a KDE user planet?

Here's jmiahman, blogging since april 2009. Clearly a Mandriva user, he recently wrote a nice review of the development version of KDE SC 4.4. Regularly blogs about other KDE stuff too, his latest one (as of this writing) is about amarok.

Robert Penz (family of our Peter?) regularly blogs about KDE, as he is a Kubuntu user. ...read more...

Mark Kretschmann (markey): ColdStorage - A Backup Tool Using Git At Its Core

System & Utilities Short article about a new project we started:

ColdStorage

What is ColdStorage? Well, basically it used to be a Vaporware project, started about two weeks ago, which is now no longer Vaporware. It started out with some of us KDE folks getting fed up with existing solutions for using Git as a backup tool (for backing up $HOME, etc). There are a number of existing projects that try to do the same, but I found none of them working, either not working at all, or not fully working.

So we thought, hey, let's give it a try by doing it ourselves. What we started with was a basic idea, a cool name, a Git repository, an IRC channel (#coldstorage on Freenode), two developers, and a bunch of code stubs. Thanks to Thomas Zander, we now actually have some code. Thomas managed to create some initial code for it basically on a Sunday evening.

Now, the project is ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): netbooking it

System & Utilities It's been another insane week of activity for me, but fortunately it's also meant having a lot to show for it. As one example, we put the Plasma animation hooks through one more API review and we're pretty happy with the shape of it now. I have some work to do in the JavaScript Plasmoid engine to reflect some of these changes, and that's a good example of how activity often causes even more work for us. ;)

Today, however, I'm in Paris attending the Netbook World Summit. I'll be taking part in a panel presentation this afternoon, but the most important thing for KDE here is the human networking opportunities. I've been joined by Frank Karlitschek to represent KDE here, and it's great to have an extra pair of hands, ears and eyes so we can get the most out of this event.

Frank and I also had a very good set of discussions yesterday over dinner and drinks about challenges and opportunities KDE and KDE e.V. are faced with, ranging from the git migration to distribution ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Tribulations of a packager (3)

System & Utilities

I’m writing these lines from inside Konqueror 4.3.80 on OpenSolaris. I wrote previously that Konq is much better with Wordpress nowadays, so that means I can blog from a browser I like under an OS that I like (or I could boot into FreeBSD and do the same thing thanks to the efforts of miwi and the gang). It was Sinterklaas this weekend, and the ole Sint brought the kids too many toys and brought me updates to the spec files for KDE software on OSOL.

Ben Taylor has picked up the prodigious (or is it Sysiphean?) task of updating the dependency tree for Solaris 10 again.

Elsewhere in the stack, strigi was updated to 0.7.0 (thanks Jos for having an official release available), shared-desktop-ontologies was added at version 0.2 (a simple build), soprano was massaged once, then virtuoso added for version 3.52.7, then soprano massaged again, then cursed, then discarded. Then all the staightforward stuff involved in updating libs, pimlibs, base-* — that is basically updating packing lists to reflect new or changed files and removing the patches ...read more...

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): What makes a killer app?

System & Utilities

It was recently brought to our attention this thread on forums of PC Linux. It was started by a long time user of KMyMoney, so it's no wonder that he mentioned KMyMoney as a killer app. Several others mention KMail, Konqueror, Dolphin, et al.

We feel very flattered by all those mentioning KMyMoney, and at the same time it puts pressure to double the effort on the KDE4 port. Anyway, it got me thinking into what makes a killer app.

Cornelius Schumacher: Build openSUSE 11.2 appliances in SUSE Studio

System & Utilities We released support to build openSUSE 11.2 appliances in SUSE Studio today. It took a bit of time to sort out all issues and do proper QA, but now it should work fine. If you find remaining problems please let us know.

Many of you will want to migrate existing appliances using an older version of openSUSE to 11.2. In many cases it's probably not a lot of work to recreate the appliance from scratch with openSUSE 11.2 as a new base, but that's clearly not a good solution for all cases. So we are working on a way to automatically migrate appliances to a newer base system. We'll let you know when it's done.

And now for something completely different: It's snowing in SUSE Studio land.

Sebastian Trueg (trueg): Convenient Querying in libnepomuk

System & Utilities

It has been a while since I blogged and a lot has happened. Not only did we have the second Nepomuk workshop on the “Open Social Semantic Desktop” which I did not report on yet, there is also a lot of stuff going on for KDE 4.4. And since I like blogging about technical stuff so much I will start with that. So here goes:

Queries in KDE 4.4 will be so much simpler (for the developer that is) since we now have the Nepomuk Query API!

Do you remember the days when you tried to write your own SPARQL queries and code looked like this:

Nepomuk::Tag myTag = getOurFancyTag();
QString query
= QString("select distinct ?r where { ?r %1 %2 . }")
.arg( Soprano::Node::resourceToN3(Soprano::Vocabulary::NAO::hasTag()) )
.arg( Soprano::Node::resourceToN3(myTag.resourceUri()) );

Well, using the query API this looks a lot nicer:

Nepomuk::Query::ResourceTerm tagTerm(myTag);
Nepomuk::Query::ComparisonTerm term(Soprano::Vocabulary::NAO::hasTag(), tagTerm);
Nepomuk::Query::Query query(term);
QString queryString = query.toSparqlString();

As you can see you do not need to know any SPARQL anymore. But it gets better. The ...read more...

Jesper Thomschutz: GCDS - the story so far

System & Utilities

The Grand Canaria Desktop Summit has been incredible so far. The amount of talent and enthusiasm for Free Software has not only been amazing, but equally impressive and inspiring. The GNOME and KDE folks talking openly and discussing future plans - proving - that the so called "desktop flame war" is more or less completely gone. I really look forward to the hacking these coming days - hopefully implementing a few of the things that have been discussed this weekend myself. Also, worth mentioning is the amazing job that Nokia did with the sponsorship. The conference location is top notch - the events great - and the swag is all very useful. Good job!

And now, we have the obligatory photos...

Milian Wolff (milianw): Real FOSS appreciation

System & Utilities

So, it’s been roughly a year since my first commit to kdelibs. According to Ohloh it’s been in November 2008. And boy have I learned much in this year. I learned C++ just to be able to contribute to KDE, since I thought it would be awesome to be able to “fix your own itch”. I have to say: It was the best decision I ever made.

I really came to appreciate FOSS in a whole new light: Contributing to a big project like KDE gets you in contact with lots of nice people. And they will help you get things done. What’s better is that in the process you learn lots of things. And I mean lots. I can now use GDB, Valgrind, now my way around some parts of the KDE/Qt API, can investigate performance related questions… And since these are such huge topics, there’s always more to learn, much more!

I doubt someone could learn that much by reading books or writing his own little application without the help of a community. The wealth of possibilities inside ...read more...

Cyrille Berger: Discussing Krita, digital painting with David Revoy

System & Utilities

For the next releases of Krita, we decided to pick up a specific artist, with a specific work flow, and to implement and fix the issue that he needs. For 2.2 (and probably 2.3), we have chosen David Revoy who has come recently to fame for his involvement in the durian project of the Blender project. Since he lives in Toulouse, and since I still live in Toulouse for the next two weeks, we felt it was a good opportunity to met and to talk about what is Krita, and to get a feel of what he needs.

On Tuesday, after work, I went to his apartment. First he showed me a bit what he needs, especially in a patch to the Gimp that brings much needed feature for him, like the brush that mix its current colour with the content of the layer, or the flow setting (that is similar to krita’s “wash” and “build up” modes, except with a fuzzy settings, ...read more...

T

System & Utilities

A few months ago I submitted my work for the Social Desktop Contest, organized by Frank of openDesktop.org. As you may remember, my submission was the social about dialog for KDE apps, currently only in Amarok, but I hope to move it to KDElibs when my university thesis work, my work work and other IRL stuff gives me a break.

Turns out, lots of people seemed to really like it (thank you for voting!), and it won the first prize, which was a Dell Mini 10v netbook with Ubuntu – a really great and appropriate gift for a Free Software contest.

Unfortunately Dell has a really weird way of doing business, long story short, regardless of the free movement of goods inside the EU, because of Dell’s arbitrary business choices it was virtually impossible to ship the netbook from Dell directly to me in Italy. Anyway, Frank and I found an alternative solution with me placing the order on Amazon.co.uk, and a few days ago I received ...read more...
