Mario Fux (unormal): Isn’t she qt? or S

System & Utilities

I know that this is mostly a personal post. But since 8 days now Jara is part of my life. She is not yet completely house-trained but we will succeed ;-).

And nonetheless here is some KDE related information. In May 2010 markey, mamarok and me will organize another KDE meeting in Randa. Topic? Multimedia! Interested? BTW: Randa is where the last Plasma meeting Tokamak3 happened…

And now back to Jara to see if she has to go outside. Below the picture you’ll find some more words in German…

Hallo zusammen.

Marco Martin (notmart): Subtle moving

System & Utilities

another quick micro thing that will be in Plasma for KDE 4.4: until now, the taskbar items appeared and disappeared "magically" and when a task disappeared between other two, every task immediately disappeared from where it was, appearing in the proper place. That is sooo computer behaviour, one of the little things that makes computer to look innatural and scary...

Until now :)

OGG version

This is made really easy by the new Qt 4.6 animations framework, and for now there will be just a little taste of things like that, then with Qt 4.7 this will become almost automagic, since it'll support animated layouts natively

Mark Kretschmann (markey): Kubuntu "Karmic" Release Party @ Puzzle ITC

System & Utilities Yesterday Myriam and I attended the Kubuntu "Karmic Koala" release party in Berne, Switzerland, kindly hosted by Puzzle ITC in their very nice office. We did all sorts of funny things there, including a talk on Project Timelord (given by Myriam), some Amarok 2.2.1 goodness (presented by me), having pizza (including some very hot sauce), and... wait for it... beer!

All in all we had a jolly good time, made some new friends, and even talked about the possibility of having a Nokia N900 release event there in January (anyone interested in giving a presentation?) :-)

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): KDE Education Survey

System & Utilities

We must not believe the many, who say that only free people ought to be educated, but we should rather believe the philosophers who say that only the educated are free. – Epictetus

The KDE-Edu team is looking for feedback from their users to improve their applications and to find out where to invest the limited time they have. If you are a student, teacher or just casual user of any of these applications we are looking for your feedback:

  • Kanagram
  • KHangMan
  • Kiten
  • KLettres
  • KWordQuiz
  • Parley
  • KAlgebra
  • KBruch
  • Kig
  • KmPlot
  • Blinken
  • KGeography
  • KTouch
  • KTurtle
  • Kalzium
  • KStars
  • Marble
  • Step
  • Cantor
  • Rocs

We created a short survey (1 page – about 5 minutes) where you can tell us about the 3 problems you have with any of the applications listed above as well as give some general feedback. Those 3 problems can be small or big. We want to know about them. This feedback is incredibly valuable to the team so if you know anyone who should take this survey but doesn’t read this blog please send ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Who are the GNU Hackers?

System & Utilities

As an extra event around FSCONS, I had the opportunity to meet a bunch of GNU hackers (part of the GNU Hacker Meeting, GHM). The GNU hackers are the people who maintain particular GNU packages, ranging from binutils to gcc to GNU Scheme to the new GNU PDF library. Cool folks all and neat to see them all in one room — and it illustrated for me that although I’m usually interested (from a technical perspective) in the desktop layer (e.g. KDE), there’s a huge stack underneath. That deeper software stack now has a face for me — up until now, somehow the “shared technology stack” underneath the Free Software desktop sort of stopped for me at X, HAL, DBus, Strigi. Let us not forget the bits underneath that make a GNU/Linux system run.

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Interpretation and learning from it

System & Utilities I just got up and Quassel presented the following to me:
<daskreech> apachelogger: as regards to your musing on what Kubuntu should be in terms of providing what is needed for the user. I just had a look at the Perfect Kubuntu Desktop 9.10 setup and the first steps are to replace nearly all the KDE apps
Honestly, I did not read the howto just until now, so thanks to daskreech for reminding me. There is indeed some things that need highlighting. Certainly not the application selection though.
The most important thing about this how to is the last line from the introduction:
I want to say first that this is not the only way of setting up such a system. There are many ways of achieving this goal but this is the way I take. I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!
This is a very reasonable statement. See, if the author were to present applications that are superior or missing, then he would need to justify such claims in one way ...read more...

Girish Ramakrishnan: Qt DevDays 2009 SFO

System & Utilities

(A very late update on DevDays 2009 SFO. I am one lazy blogger)

In an unexpected twist of events, I ended up attending Qt Developer Days at SFO. I had just one week to get my visa, flight and hotel bookings in place, so I wasn’t too hopeful. Amazingly, I got my visa interview appointment in 2 days  and received the passport by courier in another 2 days! Also, the chennai embassy didn’t have any long queues that every indian so dreads. Either the U.S.A visa process has made giant leaps or it’s the downturn .

Another screencast of yours truly: this shows the Plasma netbook shell running on a bog standard Asus EeePc 1005Ha.

It can be seen the new neat animations of the search and launch interface when results are loaded. What's neat is that it seems to run quite well on this pretty basic hardware and animations are just as smooth as they should be :)

Cyrille Berger: Krita and XCF

System & Utilities

Last week, I blogged about the removal of the graphics magick file format filter in Krita, and that it would mean that we need to write directly our own support for many file formats, using low-levels library when relevant and available. And by forcing us to do this work, the support for file formats in 2.2 will rock.

Among the three mostly usefull file formats that were delivered by the gmagick file format filter, there is XCF, the file format of the Gimp. After my blog, pusling (Sune Vuorela of the debian KDE team) reminded me about xcftools, a tool written by Henning Makholm that extract information from XCF files. Despite not being a library, the code to parse XCF files is well seperated from the command line logic, and I imported it in Krita (might be a good idea to turn it into a real library ?).

As mentioned, the previous filter was not really good, we were only able to get the layers, but ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Privacy and metrics

System & Utilities

On Wednesday the Washington Post’s “Security Fix” blog had a small item on privacy issues with the smart grid. It was most interesting for me because of the graph that was included: by looking at a simple metric (power draw in the house) one could reach conclusions on what was happening inside. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be spotted. This isn’t much of an issue if the data is available only to the power company, stored securely, and applied only to its intended purpose for which it is collected. Presumably that’s to optimize power delivery.

But when the information is used outside of that context, then bad things can happen.

This kind of concern applies to all kinds of metrics that indirectly show what is happening inside a closed box. Consider an active developer on software project where the source repository is available publicly. This applies to lots of them — and CIA.vc makes relevant stats for many even more public. By looking at time stamps you can find out roughly when the developer is active. How ...read more...

Alejandro Wainzinger (xevix): Open Source Coding Hiatus

System & Utilities
Where have you been?

So lately I've been occupied by a few things:
  • Family issues
  • Working for a startup company
  • University bureaucracy
  • Jobhunting
Which is not to say I've been without free time. What have I been using my free time for?
  • Studying natural languages more in-depth
  • Reading technical books, and inspiring books
  • Being with friends, having fun and discussing the near and long-term future
So where does this leave open-source coding, for which I've even been given the honor of being listed as author for a great project like Amarok? After all, I have a vested interest in continuing to improve something I spent so much time on. I'll explain a few factors of the times that I've tried to get back into coding for it.

Have you been coding in secret?

The nice thing about using git for development is that I can continue to work on a feature or large fix on the side, and then deploy it when ready. That said, this is ...read more...

Frederik Gladhorn (fregl): Dead Stars

System & Utilities

Fitting my earlier post about rating and stars in Get Hot New Stars Stuff , I just listened to “Dead Stars” by Covenant…

So this is all about stars. At first I wanted to answer the comments individually, but there are just too many.

A few points keep coming up:

  • The number of items in the Hot New Stuff Dialog is limited: not any more, the dialog will fetch more items if you scroll down. (I’ll do a screencast soon, promise!)
  • Updates: There is a category that shows only installed items, here it’s easy to update individual ones. Applications will have the possibility to query for updates without invoking the gui at some point, probably not in the initial release though.
  • Displaying the Rating of an item will most likely be the “five stars, just as in Nepomuk/Dolphin” variant. It shows the numerical rating in a tooltip (yeah, we all love numbers, don’t we?? though I would still download what I like, not what the rating tells me to like). I stretched the scale a bit, ...read more...

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): KDE Licensing Policy Changes

System & Utilities

Today I updated the KDE Licensing Policy with a couple of changes following requests from folks. Most notably Creative Commons is now allowed. This is only for standalone media files (such as an image for a splash screen) and not for anything which might want to be mixed with GPL material such as icons. "Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported" is the version allowed. The other change is requiring BSD licencing for CMake modules, which brings the policy into line with existing practice.

Micro-Options, Many-Options, No-Options? A practical guide to help you decide.

System & Utilities

Not very long ago, Aaron wrote an article about improving our user experience, stating that "Micro-Options Suck" . Coincidentally, an article appeared on dot.kde.org only a few hours later, stating the following: "Choice Is Not A Usability Problem" . Ardent readers will notice that there is possibly a contradiction here.

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): How are you? Kubuntu in Dallas

System & Utilities

The Ubuntu Developer Summit is happening this week in Dallas. The theme of the discussions is LTS and what it will take to have a release in six months which can be supported for three years hence. We've been having sessions on packaging, development, bugs policy, translations and more. You can find the schedule and how to take part in sessions on the summit website, there are icecast streams for all the rooms. The Kubuntu specs are on this wiki page still works in progress of course. It's going to be great to have a KDE 4 release suitable for LTS, just six months to do it!

Stefan Majewsky (majewsky): Blog’s better than backup

System & Utilities

It’s very common that people post the scripts they’ve written for their daily tasks. Seems like blogs have become the leading backup solution for Bash scripts these days. I’ve decided to join this growing group of people, and share with you a tiny script from my ~/bin which is called “cleanup”. The code is at the bottom of the post.

When you launch cleanup, it will remove any files that match “*~” (i.e., the backup files which KWrite, Kate and many other apps create), and it will print out any files that have been removed. Additionally, it will look for a Makefile, and execute “make clean” if it has a clean rule. Everything operates on the pwd only. All in all, a very handy tool to clean the ls output.

Disclaimer: The “*~” backup files have use cases, and the “clean” rule may not do what you think it does. So when using the cleanup script, be aware of the possible consequences.

Thomas Zander (ThomasZ): Two conferences about ODF

System & Utilities

In the week of November 2nd I travelled to a little village in Italy called Orvieto. The reason for going to this lovely town is two conferences in a row.
The first one is the OpenDocument plugfest. The second is the openOffice.org conference, both of which were new experiences for me.

The ODF plugfest is a meeting where different implementors of a standard come together and come up with user scenarios and test how well they port between the implementations.
So you’ll see a document created in KWord being opened in OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office and investigations started when the resuls are not as expected.

I did a presentation at the event of the progress made in the Qt (QTextDocumentWriter) and KOffice implementations of ODF and naturally the Maemo Office reader and last mentioned the Nokia sponsored officeshots.org node we are preparing.
The next day I had another presentation where I showed an interoperability issue with right-to-left languages. Several bugs were found in OpenOffice.org and MSOffice and a discussion followed to share the concepts of right-to-left text ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): An alternative to KRecipes

System & Utilities

Every now and then I post a recipe on this blog, and sometimes I muse about KRecipes, and there have been a few KDE events (the launch event in Mountain View, or CampKDE) where I’ve baked cookies or done other foodie-oriented activities. You can usually count on me to go looking for interesting food (there is no guinea-pig to eat in London, BTW) at events as well. But this winter season, I’m looking at something different. We are looking at something different. The “we” here is the FSFE, and we’ve decided that there’s worse things to do than cook a lovely dinner for some of our friends. So as part of our 2009 Fundraiser the executive team (comprised of at least three affirmed foodies — I’m not sure we have anyone who can function as a sommelier though) will be cooking a lovely dinner for one lucky sponsor of the FSFE.

Perhaps I’ll be able to practice this weekend with Claudia in Berlin — I seem to remember we got along pretty well cooking dinner in Paul’s ...read more...

Andrea Diamantini (adjam): rekonq 0.3.0. Ending point, starting point.

System & Utilities

Just a micro blog today to say some facts. In case you live under the rocks, rekonq is a software that has just reached the “perfect social browser” status. In fact all rekonq users tend to try contacting me asking for some new features… :D

Ok, stop joking and let’s see facts:

  • rekonq 0.3.0 has been released today. I’m aware that a lot of distro are just releasing some packages about. If yours is not on the list or you prefer compiling code, you can find it through kde-apps or sf.
  • With this release I can proudly say I reached my first goal: I feel I’m having “something” in my hands and a lot of people to share with. And I’m really happy about.
  • We have a lot of things in our TODO list here and I really can’t wait starting implementing them. So, I really need this release to restart my happy developing nights :D ...read more...

Andreas Marschke: Security even behind the little blinky wall

System & Utilities

So you are a unix/linux lover and like your system to be secure even against external intruders for examble when you run a small website(like me which is not yet online cuz I dont want to afford the domain) or a personal apt repository. This means Security Security Security.
Like me you might have a small headless machine standing around somewhere doing this job. But how do you secure something that is somewhere else and not your workstation and doesnt have a head(monitor) connected to it. Leaving alone the fact that you might need a keyboard/mouse. Well you connect to it via FTP/SSH/SFTP to transfer files and commands to it.
But the fact that its also avaiable via the web you might have some concerns. All these services working on open ports!

My recommendation is the brilliant and lovely Firewall Shorewall. It might take some time to get into it but I will lead you through. Lets have the thing that you are behind a router. And have a LAN of say 192.168.178.0/24(Means IP range 192.168.178.1- ...read more...

#ifndef DBGHELPER_H
#include <QString>

# define DEBUG_FUNC_NAME DbgHelper dbgHelper(Q_FUNC_INFO);

const QString &prefix, const QString &funcName) {
QString text = QString(4*indent, ' ')+QString(prefix+" "+funcName);
if(color>=0){

Cornelius Schumacher: openSUSE 11.2 and SUSE Studio

System & Utilities Last week we celebrated the release of openSUSE 11.2, the latest incarnation our fine green Linux distribution. It's a great release. People seem to like it. One quote: "OpenSuse stands out as a fine example of what a Linux desktop operating system can be."

Here at the SUSE Studio team we got quite some requests when openSUSE 11.2 will be available in SUSE Studio. Rest assured: We are working on it. There is some infrasructure to adapt, importing repositories, updating templates, upgrading Kiwi, and we are also planning to add a feature to migrate openSUSE 11.1 appliances to openSUSE 11.2, so you don't have to start from scratch, when you want to make use of the latest openSUSE for your existing appliances. It will need a little bit of time, but we'll add the support over the next few weeks.

So stay tuned, you'll soon be able to make use of all the openSUSE 11.2 goodness in SUSE Studio as well. I'm looking ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: Back from Marketing in Stuttgart

System & Utilities Had to wait for 1.5 hour in Frankfurt on the way back home, so I decided to have a look at the city. I've never seen the area around central station (hauptbahnhof for bloody germans). Right in front of central station there is plenty of entertainment, of an interesting variety. Bars which don't focus on beer - seems un-german to me, but I guess that other need has to be serviced even in Germany.

I recently saw the Red Light district in Amsterdam for the first time when I had H

Jason McDonald (Qt Development Frameworks): Qt 4.6.0 Release Candidate 1

System & Utilities

Today, we move another step closer to the Qt 4.6.0 release, with the shipping of the first release candidate.

This release improves on 4.6.0 Beta 1 by adding yet more bug fixes and documentation improvements, fine-tuning a couple of the new API’s, and incorporating various feedback from you, Qt’s community of developers and users.

The Release Candidate is very close to what the final 4.6.0 release will be. The main aim of the RC is to solicit feedback from the community and catch any remaining high priority bugs before the final release, which we expect will happen before the end of the year.

If you find a bug, we want to hear about it. You can submit a bug report and/or an autotest that demonstrates the bug via the public Qt Bug Tracker. If you know how to fix the bug, you can submit a merge-request to the public Qt source repository on http://qt.gitorious.org.

The Release Candidate is available as a source package (choose from .tar.gz and .zip versions), and as pre-built binary packages ...read more...

Sandro Andrade (sandroandrade): Announcing: The KDE Observatory

System & Utilities

Hello folks,

For still unknown reasons so far I woke up a day with repetitive and indefatigable thoughts in my mind: “you should implement a plasmoid” :) That scary voice whispered in my ears – “Everybody has a plasmoid !!” – and I answered – “No, no. Which plasmoid ? I have no idea !!”. Some days after, miraculous thunders falling from the sunny sky of Salvador da Bahia :) saved my soul. Your mission is:

The KDE Observatory

Keeping track of statistics and metrics in software development projects is not rarely a requisite activity for early evaluation of risks, quality management, and successful delivery of functionalities. KDE community provides amazing tools for such activities: commits bots, Krazy analysis, bug tracking, review board, mailing lists, etc. Why not bring these resources together in an integrated tool ? Even better, why not all those information right on your desktop ? :) That’s the ...read more...
