Niko Sams (nsams): KDevelop Php Update

System & Utilities I finished today the (for me) most missing feature in the KDevelop Php language plugin. It fixes parsing problems that occur when a project is initially parsed and the code makes heavy use of classes together with an autoloader. That means no include() statements for parent classes or static function calls. (Typical when using eg. Zend Framewok)

Previously code completion was broken until you manually forced a reparse, now this reparsing is automatically done once a identifier is not found - the file is added to the parse queue with very low priority - and the base class will be parsed meanwhile - and found correctly in the second pass.

Credits for this should mainly go to Hamish - who implemented that more or less the same way in Java language support.

As KDevelop is currently frozen for Beta8 I couldn't commit yet, until then I created a temporary git repository.

System & Utilities

With 2010 we've started to employ identica (then connected to Twitter and Facebook) as an channel for our live changelog at the {power}user level. Here's the dump for the past ~30 days (oh I should have used an XSLT).

  • We're replacing serialized QFont attrs with ODF equivalents in Kexi Reports file format; e.g. fo:font-family; it's extension of OpenRPT
  • Finally we're still embedding SQLite as many options are not set in distros, e.g. SECURE DELETE should be the default http://bit.ly/amZfJ3
  • Kexi switched to using sqlite bundled with the operating system instead of using a fork. The newest stable version is always recommended.
  • Sidebars behave now as expected: when collapsed, vertical buttons appear like in Kate. It's now natural to put widgets palette as a sidebar.
  • An extra ko dev has taken an interest in the report backend used in kexi (koreport), working to making it usable in kplato, a win allround!

George Wright (gw280): Why I won't use KDE 4

System & Utilities

Warning: rant follows.

So today at the ‘release party’ in Toronto (I use this term in the loosest possible sense), certain KDE developers decided to have a go at me for my refusal to use KDE 4 in favour of KDE 3. Admittedly one of them was particularly drunk after only a couple of pints, so I won’t take his input too seriously, but it did raise some concerns with the mentality I’m now (more often) seeing within the KDE community that I never used to see.

For me, KDE always stood for being free to do whatever you want. Surely that’s the philosophy of free software as a whole? If I want to use my machine to herd cats in my garden whilst terrorising them with a giant torch? Sure [0]. If I want to make my desktop look like other, well down, proprietary desktop environments - why not? You get my point.

However, today my objections to KDE 4 were met with an unbelievable barrier of closed-mindedness. For example; I use bitmap fonts with my terminal. Why? Because ...read more...

Martin Wilke (miwi): Presenting KDE 4.3.5 for FreeBSD.

System & Utilities Howdy,
The official release notes for this release can be found at
http://kde.org/announcements/announce-4.3.5.php. KDE 4.3.5,
the last bugfix release in 4.3.x series.
It was not planned to have KDE 4.3.5 in our Ports Tree,
because we, the FreeBSD KDE Team spend all our energy to port
KDE 4.4 release. But we thought it would be good to have it

Chani Armitage (Chani): s/Activity/Context/

System & Utilities

So… I brought up activities on plasma-devel again the other day. One of the reasons for this was that I noticed the word being used in a few different ways – mainly by me – and wanted to clear up confusion.

Well, it turns out I was the source of that confusion. :) What I’ve been referring to as “Activities” should actually be called “Context”. That’s what aaron was calling it, months and months ago, and somehow I remembered the word as something completely different and was avoiding it. Oops. So, when you read my old blog post or see my presentation from campkde, just replace 99% of the times I say “activity” with “context”.

Some other good things came of that discussion, but I have several essays to write so I don’t feel up to doing a long blog post on top of it all; either I’ll blog next week, or after we’ve discussed it at tokamak. :)

So, just to be extra clear: an Activity is a group of widgets on your desktop (what ...read more...

Guillaume DE BURE (gdebure): Skrooge 0.6.0 released

System & Utilities

The Skrooge team is proud to announce the release of version 0.6.0, bringing new features and a lot of bugfixes.

New features

Here are some of the most prominent new features in Skrooge 0.6.0.

Reports

Forecasting

Graph with forecast

Skrooge is now able to draw some estimation of how a graph might look in the future. This is valid for any report with a graph of type line, whatever the chosen time interval (years, months, weeks, days...). There are two different methods for forecasting:

  • Schedule: Skrooge will use the upcoming recurrent operations and draw them on the graph.
  • Moving Average: Skrooge will use existing operations and build a moving average set of points for upcoming periods. This method tries to give you a sense of "based on how the graph looked like in the past, here is how it might look like for the near future". Of course, this can give totally unacurate results, depending on the dataset used, period, weather outside...

The forecasted period is ...read more...

Stuart Jarvis: SSD or HDD? (and good KDE distros)

System & Utilities

Dear lazyweb…

My operating system hard disk has failed (again – kinda, poking it from a live CD shows that the filesystem isn’t recognised, though I can mount it if I explicitly state it is ext4 and a fair bit of the data is still there). It’s a vintage 70GB Seagate, the SMART diagnostics are not good, it has got corrupted before and I didn’t really trust it anyway – data is on another disk.

So, it’s time for a new disk.

Broken PC, fortunately not mine

Broken PC, by Sarah Baker (cc-by)

The question is whether to buy another spinning disk or go for solid state? Does anyone have experience of an SSD and have a view on advantages/disadvantages (I’ve Googled a bit already). I’d be going for a cheap MLC SSD at probably 30-60GB (Intel or OCZ) which is plenty for the OS and .kde etc – i.e. stuff with little files and lots of seeks, ...read more...

Alex Fiestas (afiestas): I’m going to FOSDEM too!

System & Utilities

Seems that this year a lot of KDE hackers will go to FOSDEM and I won’t be an exception :) !

I have not defined my roadmap (yet), but at least I’ll have a couple of meeting regarding the future of KBluetooth, and sooner than you think I’ll come back with great news about Bluetooth+KDE.

If you’re in the FOSDEM and you have doubts or ideas about Bluetooth+KDE ping to me I’ll be around *KDE* stuff in there.

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): looking for awesome GSoC ideas

System & Utilities

It’s that time of the year again when we need to start thinking about awesome ideas for GSoC. I just prepared a page on the community wiki to collect them. The list needs to be finished by March 8th. Got a great idea for a nice project a student could be working on for the summer? Add it! If you are unsure or have any questions ping me or the team of the app you have an idea for.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): interesting bits in 4.4.0 for plasma-*

System & Utilities With KDE Software Compilation v4.4.0 tagged and going through final release engineering processes, early reviews and discussions about it are appearing around the Internet. It's great to see the interest bubbling around it all.

One interesting meme is that "not much has changed". That sentiment is a sign that things are settling down nicely in KDE 4: things aren't moving around as much and there's a sense of predictability again. This is an important milestone.

However, some people are under the impression that pretty much nothing has been done except "under the hood changes". I think this highlights a challenge for our communication around SC 4.4.0: just because KDE 4 has hit an externally visible stable trajectory and the SC 4.3 -> SC 4.4 jump is smooth, that doesn't mean that there aren't lots of new and exciting things in SC 4.4.0.

Let's take the Plasma Desktop, for example. As can be seen in the 4.4 changelog for libplasa, plasma-desktop, plasma-netbook and krunner, we've been busy doing as much new stuff as refining the ...read more...

First of all, during Camp KDE it was awesome to talk to people like Jos, Celeste, Alexandra, Till, Leo and Jeff (and many others). It’s good to share your thoughts with many people that you just don’t have this big bandwith for chat that you have when you’re physically together :)

Paul Adams: YAIGTFP: PIMp My Desktop

System & Utilities

So I am also going to FOSDEM:

I'm going to FOSDEM, the Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting

I look forward to hugs and beer over the weekend. However, it’ll be an unusual experience for me this year… This will be the first time that I am at FOSDEM “on business”. Much of my time during the event is already preallocated to various meetings. Sadly this leaves very little time for attending talks…

Except my own! Come one, come all to the KDE devroom at 13:45 on Saturday: PIMp My Desktop

In this talk I will be giving an overview of the current state of KDE PIM technologies and the community behind them (yes, green blobs!)… plus a sneaky peek at some awesome things to come in 2010.

There are some truly sexy goings-on in PIMland, so this talk is definitely for you if you care about having control over your personal information.

Jos Poortvliet: Me wants Kivio!

System & Utilities Hi all,

This is just a quick "anyone up to it?" question: about 6 months ago Sven blogged about the state of Kivio. It consists currently of about 223 lines of code and is working, but a few crucial things are missing like stencil support.

I used to use Kivio in the KOffice 1.x days and liked its simplicity (but missed the lack of stencil sets). Now someone even offered to create stencil sets - however, currently Kivio can't even load them. The topic of Kivio just came up on the dutch Mandrivaclub forum, which reminded me I wanted to write about it...

As Kivio is a potentially great tool for office workers but also for many FOSS teams, I was hoping that by bringing this app to the attention someone might be interested in picking it up... Currently Kivio in SVN hasn't seen (human) activity in over 6 months which means it is open for anyone to take charge...

So, anyone feels up to the challenge? ...read more...

Jussi Schultinkm (jussi01): Ubuntu IRC Helpers channel

System & Utilities

Hi All,

This is something we have had in the works fore a while and I hope to put some more effort onto it soon. The #ubuntu-irc-helpers channel on freenode has been created as a place for co-ordination and learning for Ubuntu helpers on IRC.

The idea is its somewhat like a “backstage” to #ubuntu, #kubuntu, #xubuntu and the other support channels, its a place to talk about the things that are going on in these channels and help give better support. It allows sharing of best practices, that “quiet word to someone” if needed and even a quick prod to the ops with out using the!ops trigger.

Overall, its a place to “Help the helpers”.

There is more info on the wiki at:  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/IrcTeam/UbuntuIRCHelpers

In any case, if you help in the #k/x/ubuntu-*support channels, please feel free to come jointhe channel and help make Ubuntu’s IRC a better, more helpful place :)

Remember to read the topic on entry! :)

See you there!

System & Utilities

The original Lancelot icon is usually considered weird-looking when seen on a panel (or desktop). Even I have had Lancelot set up not to use it.

I like the old icon very much, and I’m still proud I succeed in making something like that with a vector-graphics program (Inkscape) so it still is, and will be until the end of time, the main icon of the Lancelot project. But from now on, it will not be used for the applet button.

Now, the default icon is the standard KDE icon – the same one other launchers use.

For those of you who want to have a normal-looking icon but still want others to see that you are using Lancelot and not something else, you can use the following one:

The new icon can be set through the applet configuration dialogue.

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): To spam or not to spam...

System & Utilities

I'm keeping my promise to write a weekly update on what has happened in Krita. There's usually a lot to write about, and I'm trying to add some generally interesting things, some personal, some artistic, so it's not just a commit digest, but a little bit more.

But I'm wondering how to syndicate it -- Planet KDE is meant for personal blogs, and this isn't personal. I'm not sure about the other planets my blog is syndicated. And I've have complaints that having a pointer to the new issue on my blog is a bit spammy, and I think I agree with that. So I'm intentionall not linking to Krita.org this time :-) (But it's a good read!)

Does anybody have any bright ideas?

Chani Armitage (Chani): busy bees

System & Utilities

There’s lots of activity in #plasma the last few days. lots going on. :) With 4.4 being tagged on wednesday, that’s not too surprising… but it’s still nice to see everyone working to get this release as stable as we can in the little time we have left.

Although I haven’t quite caught up on my homework since campkde, I’ve still been chipping away at things where I can. There’s more screensaver fixes, and a panel bugfix too. I’ll go back to panicking about homework on wednesday. ;)

Thanks to rrix, practically all the widgets in kdeplasma-addons have had their security re-checked, and we’ll probably deal with kdebase tomorrow. :) hooray for security!

I’m already counting the days to tokamak, too. so close, and yet so far…

The Gentle Art of Firefox Tuning

Linux users tend, I've noticed, to complain about suckiness on the Web itself, and in their own Web browsers - browser bloat, sites going all-Flash, brain damage inherent in AJAX-oriented "Web 2.0" sites [1] , and death-by-JavaScript nightmares.

It's been a few weeks, so what's up in the KDE Clapham office? (I'm pretty sure I'm the only KDE hacker in Clapham so can safely claim 'office' status, if I'm not, meet me for a pint down the Abbeville pronto!).

I'll be at Fosdem this weekend, so if you're there be sure to drop by the KDE stand for a chat, I promise not to bang on about calendars too much :-)  (Well, unless you happen to be a Gtk/Gnome/Evolution hacker wanting to talk about shared standards for calendars and holiday files, then I'm all mouth).  Just don't ask me about license stuff, you'll be wanting that weird bloke down the other end of the hall... Alex Fiestas (afiestas): Kbluetooth 0.4 is here!

System & Utilities

Months ago, I started to take care of a forgotten piece of KDE, kde-bluetooth. After a lot of work and an almost clean the bugtrack of bugs, I’m proud to announce KBluetooth 0.4!

These are the highlights:

  • The official name is now "KBluetooth".
  • A lot of crashes have been fixed, KBluetooth should not crash now.
  • File transfer (send/receive) reported to work for everybody with any kind of device.
  • Improved the input pairing (Almost all devices working).
  • Huge improvements in the UI.

Known problems:

  • The speed in notifications is not accurate nor working right

Notes for packagers:

  • Since the first RC, I only had fixed BUGS, and almost every commit since then contains an atomic fix, so please upgrade to the 0.4 final or apply the patches yourself, but do not get stuck in the previous RC’s, doing that you’ll waste the time of your bugtracker people, as well of kde bugtracker crew and mine.
