Writing a custom widget...

System & Utilities

One of the dangers of having a real interaction designer look at your application is that they are apt to suggest that some special widget might make your app much nicer, much more efficient, much more usable.

Chani Armitage (Chani): and life goes on

System & Utilities

why is it that essays are so much easier to write after midnight? no wonder I’m still jetlagged…

I kinda got a little sidetracked this morning – after a long night of waking up regularly and having weird dreams (either suse or archlinux had to go out of business, because… *something*… had happened to a bunch of key people, and I was pretending to be a guy because bad things would happen if this evil lady who looked like my grandmother found out who I was) … well, eventually I decided it was morning and I was taking a sick day, and gave in to the lure of teh intarwebs. And found myself looking at an evil little heisenbug that’s been bothering me for a long time.

I started trying to untangle the panel code once again (plasma’s actually old enough to have some messy cobwebbed code now. huh) and fought with it, and eventually decided that the darn thing just had to be a kwin bug. since I’d spent all that time figuring out what the code actually ...read more...

Edward Toroshchin (hades): Git Is Your Friend not a Foe Vol. 4: Rebasing

System & Utilities

This time I’ll talk about more complex things, which give developers more power over their life. Actually, they just look complex. In fact these are quite natural operations over Git commit history structure, which was described already in my previous posts and gazillions of posts by other people.

So, let’s start with the simplest. Mr. Cleverhead sometimes fails to remember which branch he is currently on. He commits to a branch master, while in fact he should have committed that to staging. What can he do to fix it? He decides to run git show, save the commit as a patch, then checkout branch staging, apply patch there and commit with the same commit message. Well, it happens so that Git already has a command that does exactly this automatically! It is called git cherry-pick. Besides fixing Mr. Cleverhead’s reputation, it is also quite often used for example to backport commits to release branches.

Git cherry-pick

Note, however, that this still requires Mr. Cleverhead to remove his commit from master. We believe in him.

Tomaz Canabrava (tomaz): Community Efforts: Reducing Qt Illiteracy

System & Utilities

The KDE Community is growing really string here in the south part of the globe, with the efforts of Sandro Andrade and his Class ‘how to survive helping opensource projects’ in UFBA ( Federal University of Bahia ), Wagner Reck changing minds of professors and students in Rio Grande do Sul – making them try and use oss applications ( kde & non kde included ), Amanda, Lamarque, Felipe and everybody from KDE – MG doing an amazing job in Promoting the K-brand and a lot more.

I Started giving Qt lessons back in 2008 at LatinoWare, when Piacentini invited me and Sandro to go there and talk about Qt and KDE development, so it’s almost 2 years that I have this blessed job. Usually my Qt classes have 5 to 10 students, and I was pretty confident with my class and knowledge of basic to intermediate Qt.

Now, 2010, I got the biggest Qt class ever, and to be onest, I’m quite scared. I’m gonna teach for a full weekend, from 8a.m to 6p.m a class of 40 students. ...read more...

Will Stephenson: New KDE Four Live Images

System & Utilities

New KDE Four Live CDs with KDE 4.4.1, and much more are up.

They were built with openSUSE Build Service's KDE:Medias project and SUSE Studio and consist of openSUSE 11.2 plus all updates, KDE 4.4.1, upstream branding, Nepomuk enabled and Strigi disabled (because it's a Live CD).

They can be used as Live USB sticks too, see these instructions if you don't know how to dd a file to a device.

You can also install to disk and use it as a normal distribution using the installer on the desktop. Once installed, the first update will pull in all the packages that are normally on an openSUSE KDE install that do not fit on a single CD.

Simon Hausmann (tronical): QtWebKit Releases

System & Utilities

QtWebKit is a part of Qt and we’ve always released them together. With a rapidly growing development community we’d like to decouple QtWebKit from Qt’s releases. It is a project on its own, it’s developed as part of the WebKit project and therefore deserves its own release. We’re going to call the first standalone release simply QtWebKit 2.0.

baloon.png

What does a standalone release mean?

We want to make QtWebKit release available to anyone using Qt, as a source package to install into your existing Qt installation. QtWebKit 2.0 is going to work with Qt 4.6 and 4.7. We will continue to ship QtWebKit in the src/3rdparty/webkit directory in Qt releases, too. It will simply contain the latest stable release. Inside of Qt this will be covered by commercial support.

In the near future we are going to create the release branch and aim for a final 2.0 release in May. I’m going to post future updates about the releasing and branching to our development mailing list webkit-qt@lists.webkit.org.

Robert Riemann (saLOUt): Awesome Klipper Workflow

System & Utilities

Copy your clipboard to the pastebin

Klipper Pastie.org Menu When you are a power IRC user, you might know the problem. You cannot copy the whole source code, error message or log file etc. directly in the IRC channel. You need a pastebin. I like http://pastie.org really much. It has a clean interface and supports highlighting for many languages. But how to copy the text to the pastebin in a handy and short way?

Do the following to copy the clipboard content to the pastebin by a simple <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<R> (global shortcut to open Klipper actions) and a click:

  • Copy the file pastie.rb to a folder which is in your $PATH
  • Make the file executable for you
  • Edit the actions of Klipper and add for the .* Regexp (means: no special string) a new action (do not activate automatic).
  • Add the command echo '%s' | pastie.rb, feedback should go to clipboard and set the description to “post as plain text” for instance
  • You can add another command echo '%s' | pastie.rb -f ...read more...

System & Utilities

What's new, based on identica notes:

  • Thoughts on deploying SQLite turned out to be work in progress. Valuable input from our distro friends. A special wiki page has been created. See the last item of this entry Eye-wink
  • KoReport, Kexi's rpt backend has undergone some refactoring to make it more generic.
  • Fix number 1, charts working again in the designer.
  • Working through the huge list of issues krazy has found with the kexi codebase, not glamorous, but necessary!
  • Refactored the report renderers, and given better class name, to make the report library suitable for adoption over all of KOffice.
  • Do you want well working MSAccess to Kexi converter? It's up to you - request it!
  • KOffice now has a suite-wide reporting library! (placed in koffice/libs/koreports/)
  • Kexi switched to "system" SQLite again. We want to play with distros well, but will check SQLite features at compilation to maintain high quality standards.

Cyrille Berger: The difficult choice of removing features

System & Utilities

Adding a new feature is usually considered easy in the open source world, and then it is taken for granted. Removing a feature, on the other hand, it is a different story. It is not about making Krita less useful, au contraire, it is about making the best for our vision. But why remove a feature, they don’t disturb, or take too much space. They still come in the way and clutter, and what is the point of a menu entry, if you are never going to use it ?

Krita is now focused on being a painting application

We have mentioned in our blogs entry (by me in Krita meeting 2010 – day 1 and by Boudewijn Rempt’s blog) on last week-end Krita meeting, that we had now decided for a vision oriented toward painting.

Where does that leave photography ? Well clearly, it is out. And honestly, between Gimp (especially with their work on 2.8) and Digikam, there is not really much room ...read more...

Marco Martin (notmart): A vertical Plasma

System & Utilities

Two little extra videos linked to the previous post, this is always plasma-netbook and plasma-mobile running on the JAX10 with Moblin, this time with the screen rotated to vertical.

It is a bit of an hack since the device doesn't have an accelerometer and the touchscreen needs to be recalibrate every time the screen rotates, but is neat as a proof of concept, because neither Plasma Netbook or Plasma Mobile were never designed thinking about vertical screens, but in both cases, always keeping in mind we are at early prototype stage, they work quite well.

Something to be noted, fullscreen plasmoids tends to look a bit better on a vertical screen rather than an horizontal one, and our on screen keyboard works already quite well, even tough it'll need to show less keys when in a tiny screen

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Last Weekend in Krita

System & Utilities

Don't worry -- tomorrow I'll do a Last Week in Krita for krita.org, but it's so long since I last blogged about Krita personally, and besides, I need to think-think before writing down dot story and krita.org story about the Krita sprint. (Short version: it's a blast -- not everyone could come, but we have seven great people and me in one room and working together and having fun and being productive.)

So... Cyrille has already let the cat out of the bag: Peter Sikking joined us this sprint to help us define a clear vision -- and stayed on afterwards to help us with our various and manifold usability and interaction problems. I think most people in the libre graphics world will know Peter from his work on the Gimp and OpenPrinting.

Well, our vision session wasn't characterized by any real friction, but it still took many hours. In the end we arrived at a real and coherent vision. Cyrille already blogged it, but it's still worthwhile ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Using Tabs in the Taskbar: Improving Desktop-Application Integration, Visual Hierarchy, and Usability in KDE

System & Utilities

A few weeks ago I spent some time thinking about one of the issues I am becoming increasingly concerned about as we focus more on the KDE Desktop and less on KDE applications: the growing separation between the Desktop and the application windows in the environment. As Plasma becomes more and more sophisticated, the gap between the Desktop and the environment grows. The two pieces do not look the same, do not behave same, do not provide the same types of interactions, and user interface design conventions are diverging. The Desktop and rest of the application environment are starting to become two separate experiences which is something we should avoid. This is especially a problem as KDE applications begin providing smaller service-based widgets which live on the Desktop.

Tabs are a metaphor used to connect an interactive widget to a layer of content in a user interface. An important feature of the tab design is the lack of a border at the connection of the tab to the content. Unlike buttons which are completely closed and sometimes disconnected from the ...read more...

Ivan

System & Utilities

Lancelot (the menu) was not really designed to run on mobile devices (although it could be used on such devices as a full screen application quite well), but the Lancelot Part applet proved to be a rather good fit.

I wasn’t involved in any mobile-related developments at Tokamak 4 (I had too much to work on krunner and activities) but I found some time to test the KDE/Plasma enabled Jax 10 devices.

Placing a Lancelot Part inside the newspaper activity that showed favourite applications and a search box was a breeze and it worked quite well. Marco did a really good job of adapting the plasma-netbook edition to mobile (touch screen) devices so the Parts applet required no changes at all to fit in the new environment.

Here is an obligatory blurred screenshot:

I’m planning to make a screencast about using Lancelot in Plasma Netbook, but I’m not finding the time. ...read more...

Holger Freyther (zecke): Dealing with Performance Improvements

System & Utilities I hope this post is educational and help the ones among us doing performance optimisations without any kind of measurement. If you do these things without a benchmark you are either a genuis or very likely your application is going to run slower. I'm not going to talk about performance analysis right now but tools like OProfile, callgrind, sysprof and speedprof are very handy utilities. The reason I'm writing this up is that I saw a performance regression in one of my testcase reductions and this is something which I don't appreciate and in general I see a lot of claims about performance tuning but little bit in regard to measurements and this part is very worrying.

For QtWebKit we have the performance repository with utilities, high level tests and something I labeled reductions. In detail we do have the following things:

  1. Macros for benchmarking. I started with the QBENCHMARK macros but they didn't really provide what I needed and changing them turned out to be a task I didn't have time for. I create WEB_BENCHMARK macros ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: (q)palette viewer

System & Utilities

Qt documentation mentions QPalette as the class that contains color groups, Active, Inactive, and Disabled, for each widget state. Knowing the color for many different color roles is important. For example, a style author might want to tweak the colors of each buttons depending on QPalette::Button, QPalette::ButtonText, QPalette::Highlight and likely play with the shades and the saturation. There are probably few different ways to get the RGB values of those colores, here I show one of them: using a small tool that display all the color roles for active, inactive and disabled states:

And here how it looks like on Nokia N900:

The code is in the X2 repository, check the sub-directory widget/palview. A possible exercise for the brave reader: allow the user to choose other color spaces such as HSL or HSV.

Have fun with the colors!

Danny Kukawka: How to move local git repo with branches to a server

System & Utilities

As my HAL/hal-info git repos were lost last year at people.freedesktop.org, I restored them from my last existing local checkouts. I simply copied the local checkout/repo to the server and created a new git repository as proposed in the git user manual:

git clone --bare ~/hal hal.git

touch proj.git/git-daemon-export-ok

But as I, some months later, tried to switch to my hal-0_5_12-SUSE_CODE11 branch, there was no such branch. To be exact: there was neither this branch nor any of the upstream branches. I couldn't find any information on the web how to solve this problem. Everything I tried didn't work. When I cloned the new repo from the upstream repo, all branches where available.

At the end I found my own solution once I compared the .git/refs/ directories of the cloned repo from the upstream and the local repo. Looks as if the ...read more...

Andreas Marschke: Bangarang and Kross

System & Utilities

Hi everyone!

Allright since my last post I’m finally happy and landed on Debian Squeeze and started hacking again on bangarang . Our progress is really amazing. My recent task was a major feature for the new 2.0 release. The next release will have a Plugin architecture in place that employs KDEs precious kross.

The new ScriptingConsole for Bangarang

If you like Python, Ruby, JavaScript or QtScript you can now try and hack together a little plugin on our scripting console.
