Johan Thelin: Package names

System & Utilities Dear lazy web,

I'm working on a presentation on getting started with Qt. For it, I need package names for Qt for different distros. E.g. (k)ubuntu: qt-sdk, debian: qtcreator. What package installs QtCreator + Qt and needed tools for your distro? Please comment!

Thank you!

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Amsterdam Legal Workshop

System & Utilities

Today is the first day of the Amsterdam Legal Workshop — in full I suppose that’s called the Free Software Foundation Europe’s Freedom Task Force European Legal Network yearly workshop in Amsterdam. As in 2008 and 2009, we have a room full of the top lawyers and technologists in the Free Software legal field. Thanks to the organizational efforts of Shane, Karsten, Hugo and Rainer we’ve got a full two days of talks and demonstrations. As in past years, new relationships develop as we bring different parties to a neutral, private conference. We also take stock of where we are on a global scale with respect to Free Software licensing and legal issues. Glyn Moody was kind enough to open up the conference with a talk on the (singular) conversion from analogue to digital which — as is Glyn’s wont — ties together the past and future and fields of law, biology and computer science. And from there, we’ve gone off into deep legal territory which I won’t write about, but it’s an education.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): API Docs

System & Utilities

I’ve added a mirror of the kdelibs API documentation, with some exceptions:

  • No class inheritance diagrams.
  • No annotated source code.
  • Perhaps worst, no classmapper.php, so no search.

Hopefully it’s still useful for somebody until EBN and api.kde.org are restored.

Celeste Paul (seele): FLOSS at CHI

System & Utilities

Tonight I will be traveling to Atlanta, Georgia, United States to attend ACM CHI 2010, perhaps the largest and most influential academic (and slowly turning professional/industry) conference on human-computer interaction. Before the conference, I will be participating in two open source-related workshops and then will enjoy the first few days of CHI before heading home.

On Friday and Saturday, I will be attending the Computer Human Interaction Mentoring Workshop (CHIMe). CHIMe is a workshop targeted towards providing a mentoring opportunity for women and minorities in HCI. I will be talking about my dissertation research on notifications as well as my experiences as a woman and designer in open source software.

On Sunday, I will be participating in the FLOSS HCI workshop organized by Michael Terry and Paula Bach. While there are no FLOSS HCI papers accepted to this year’s CHI main conference, this workshop is important for providing a venue for open source designers to get together as well as spreading the word about open source and design in open ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Technical Papers at Akademy 2010

System & Utilities

Akademy 2010 will be hosted at Tampere, Finland from July 3-10 2010. The event features an interesting mix of talks and presentations by prominent Free Software developers, coding sessions, workshops, and last but not least social activities.

Consider submitting a talk, BoF, or workshop today! In addition to talks, optional technical papers may also be submitted.Technical papers are an excellent way of documenting a new technology, thoughtful analysis, or empirical investigation of KDE technology. If you are a developer working on a new technology, a student who used KDE in a semester project, or a researcher using KDE technology in your work, consider submitting a technical paper.

Akademy 2009 produced several great technical papers on various topics by academic researchers, technology labs, and KDE developers. The call for papers ends April 23 so be sure to get your submission in soon!

Will Stephenson: api.kde.org down! so what?

System & Utilities

KDE Developers may have noticed that the developer documentation server at api.kde.org is down. This is due to a hardware failure which will be recovered next week. That need not put the brakes on your work though, since if you have the source code on your system you can build the API docu locally yourself, as HTML, as man pages, or as Qt Assistant help files to view in Qt Assistant or Qt Creator.

Andreas Pakulat: KDevelop4 Release Candidate 1

System & Utilities

Finally getting around to blog about this.

We’ve released RC1 of KDevelop4 today. We’ve fixed a couple of bugs and got some good performance improvements, but even more will be in RC2. RC2 will also ship with translations, for RC1 we’ve discovered a severe problem that we couldn’t fix anymore in time related to translations.

On behalf of Milian and Niko we’re also releasing the first release candidate of the PHP plugins, bringing great web development to kdevelop.

The tarballs can be found on all KDE mirrors.

Note that I had to update the php tarballs yesterday. I forgot to increase the kdevelop plugin version in their desktop files before uploading and hence they wouldn’t have been loaded with kdev4 rc1.

To make sure you’ve got the right ones the md5sums for those two are:
9aa5926ca68c618ee87603619547898b kdev-php-docs-rc1.tar.bz2

Arno Rehn (pumphaus): Current git branch in shell prompt

System & Utilities

Since I”ve read much about git and how great it is, I recently thought that I had to try it myself. And indeed, it is quite amazing and is nice to work with. There was one thing that I disliked, though: I never quite knew in which branch of my repository I was, especially after I”ve been away from coding for a few hours.
Of course I could just look that up, but I tend to forget that and then end up with code that belongs to a different branch. Now the shell prompt looked like a good place to show the current branch, but simply executing “git branch | grep ^*” would only work in the top-level directory of the repository. So I wrote the following function which will traverse all containing directories and look for a .git directory. Having found one, it will nicely print the the branch in dark green color, with a @ sign in front of it:

function formattedGitBranch {
checkDir=\"$PWD\"

# check whether we''re in a git repository

Adenilson Cavalcanti (Savago): Lies, big fat lies and benchmarks

System & Utilities

There is the old saying, ‘there are lies, big fat lies and there are benchmarks’, but after my previous post about the jsanim, it was time to try to measure how good or bad the javascript based animations are when comparing it against Plasma::Animations (written in C++).

== what to measure? ==

The first task was to have a meaningful number and frames per second (FPS) sounds like a good idea. The only issue is that QGraphicsView will only update parts in the scene that need redrawing (besides it seems that there is not an easy way to access the draw events without subclassing). My solution was to set a counter for the Animation::updateCurrentTime() method that is called while the animation is running, given that the documentation says that “… neither the interval between calls nor the number of calls to this function are defined; though, it will normally be 60 updates per second.”. Maybe I should call it Function calls Per Second (FCPS). :-)

Another important factor that can impact hugely ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): one team, two teams! small team, big team!

System & Utilities From time to time I hear things to the effect of, "It's hard to get anything done in KDE. Where's the project-wide direction and management?" Indeed, it's not trivial. We could try to excuse the issue and say, "Well, KDE is huge now. 600+ developers contributing to the last release, even more translators, artists and others. That's a lot of people to move about!" While this is true, I don't think it is the whole picture.

In the beginning, some 14+ years ago, "KDE" was a software project to create the "Kool Desktop Environment" (quickly becoming the "K Desktop Environment"). There were a little over a dozen contributors and they all knew each other as a result. It was an ambitious project given how much software they planned on writing, and the results of the first go-around (KDE 1.x) were impressive though certainly small compared to what KDE (which now refers to a community rather than a specific project) puts out today.

Over the years, from that one team sprouted dozens of others. Each of these teams works ...read more...

Frederik Gladhorn (fregl): attica 0.1.3

System & Utilities

Just a quick note for packagers and people building kdelibs:
I released libattica 0.1.3 yesterday. Now kdelibs trunk (4.5) doesn’t depend on an unrelease attica version from kdesupport trunk any more.
Get it while it’s hot: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/attica/.

No big changes, but a few bug fixes and one or two new calls. And a lesson learned.
When you use QPluginLoader you should not delete the root components of the loaded plugins… just like it says in the docs… of course it will only bite you once you have more than one application using the plugin at once.

Lukas Tvrdy (lukast): Week 10: Default button

I hopped to the second part of the action plan already in week 9 and I’m working on features now. I also fix bugs these days. Performance part is pretty much done. But when we discover some regression or some other performance issue, I solve it. We also discovered that now the parts of the Action Plan are actually obsoleted. I also need time to focus on my thesis text and prepare for the state exam to become Master Of Science so we moved my last 3 weeks of work to June. I will continue to work on June til 1st week in September. It was already announced in Last Week In Krita. Thanks to the sponsors who allowed me to work more on Krita full-time.

and now, I *finally* have something I can take a screenshot of.

yes, it’s not much… but it’s mine. :) it’s the very very beginning of an activity manager. it doesn’t actualy have any *activities* as such, but the day isn’t over yet. ;)

Stephen Kelly (steveire): Using Grantlee for code generation

System & Utilities

Grantlee rustles on toward a release. I recently added one more example application showing the code generation opportunities it makes possible.

[OGG link]

In the video I edit and create some Qt Properties and methods with arguments in a simple UI, fill in some additional metadata, and then generate code representing the content of the dialog. The actual code is generated with some Grantlee templates. Simple loops are used to create the properties in the dialog, and if conditions for empty argument lists or the use of the pimpl idiom.

This could potentially be a time saver for generating the boring bits when creating a new class. Beyond that though, it is language independent. The structure and grammar of the generated code comes entirely from some template code files. The output language is entirely contained in the templates, and the Context of the rendering stage describes the content of the class. That means that it can also generate python code with the same Context and the same UI. ...read more...

Robin Burchell (w00t): Qt on Maemo: a warning

System & Utilities Just a quick post to share a fairly important piece of information I found out today with the rest of the internets - hopefully this will help if someone is searching to find out why the list in their Qt application is so slow.

Basically, the setup I have is as follows: A model -> providing images/text to a delegate, text laid out in sizeHint using QTextLayout and friends -> rendered in paint onto the view. This is a pretty standard setup, though the info in this post probably applies for other API like QListWidget::setItemWidget() too - I haven't checked.

Back to the code, in my delegate paint event, I had the following, also fairly standard code:

    QApplication::style()->drawPrimitive(QStyle::PE_PanelItemViewItem, &option, painter);
This is nothing special. It ensures that Qt draws my selection rect around items when they are selected and all the other standard style prettiness.

However - and here's the kicker - my size hint wasn't always 70 pixels tall. "Why the hell is this an issue" I hear you ask? Good question.

Let's run our application and ...read more...

Riccardo Iaconelli (ruphy): Akunambol 0.1

System & Utilities

Hi!
Funambol logoI just released Akunambol 0.1, a KDE application to sync your Akonadi data with a SyncML server. You want to use Akunambol to have a full backup of your contacts and calendar, and why not, synchronize and share your address book (and calendar) between your mobile, your iPod touch, your Google account and your KDE desktop. Read more to know how to do that.

Akunambol has been built using the Funambol C++ SDK, as part of their code sniper program. I announced it yesterday on their mailing list, but I think that it deserves also a blog post, since it may be of interest for the KDE community. This is the first release aimed at first adapters; however in my testing it resulted to be very stable for the few things it does. There shouldn’t be any data losses, but a backup is as always advised.

If you want to check out the code, please beware that it still kills kittens here and there. For now this is ...read more...

Stephen Kelly (steveire): Grantlee::RichTextBuilders

System & Utilities

In my ongoing quest to get a Grantlee release out the door, I recently imported the KRichTextBuilders from kdepimlibs and renamed them Grantlee::RichTextBuilders.

I wrote those classes in 2008 but they were never used yet, and their headers were never installed. The reason for that is mainly that I was not happy with the API. The intention of the builders classes was to make it easier to create “cleaner” html from a QTextDocument that what is returned from QTextDocument::toHtml().

Users seem to have a lot of complaints about it taking more space than it needs to, but on a more relevant level, the toHtml call returns a html document complete with metadata such as a element which needs to be removed if data from multiple QTextDocuments is to be combined into one with an external theme, as is the case with KJots.

Up to now the way KJots has done that is to have an aggregation QTextDocument and do something like

foreach( QTextDocument *page, book )
aggregationDocument->insertHtml( page.toHtml() );

There is some other ...read more...

Stefan Majewsky (majewsky): When QGraphicsView is not flexible enough

System & Utilities

Last week, when I added rubberband selection to Palapeli, I sacrificed the “Clicking with left mouse button moves viewport” option because it conflicts with the rubberband. Knowing that more mouse actions are yet to be added, I needed a scalable solution. I found inspiration in Plasma’s ContainmentActions:

The idea for Palapeli: Separate the triggers (mouse buttons or mouse wheel orientations, and keyboard modifiers) from the actions (e.g. move piece, zoom viewport, resize scene). This was essentially what I have implemented over the last two days. This is not visible because there is no nice configuration interface such as the one shown above yet, but you can already change the hard-coded triggers in src/engine/interactormanager.cpp.

The only problem with this new approach is that I have to bypass QGraphicsView’s mouse event handlers nearly completely.

Besides that, I have greatly improved the speed of puzzle loading, and the rendering performance for big puzzles. When pieces snap together, their pixmaps are combined into one, so only one pixmap ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: simple http proxy server in 100 lines

System & Utilities

I guess a simple proxy server should have been an example in Qt Network module. What I mean of course a real proxy server based on Qt, not about using a proxy server via QNetworkProxy class. After all, there are other more complex examples like the torrent client and Google suggest (yeah, blame me for the latter). As a matter of fact, there are e.g. a gazillion proxy servers written in Python.

Look no more. I posted an example in the X2 repository, under the directory network/webproxy. The code is written for clarity and not for performance. In fact, fancy error handling is even omitted (minimalism rulez!). There is no support for pipelining, or in-memory cache, or per-connection thread, or even secure connection via https. I leave them as exercises for the curious readers.

If we focus on things which work, here they are: asynchronous socket handling, different request methods ...read more...

Of course this isn't the limit, so if you come up with another great idea don't hesitate to apply for it.
In other news we've just created a Marble Facebook Group for all users of Marble and Facebook.
