Lukas Tvrdy (lukast): New brush in Krita: Softbrush

System & Utilities

I’m quite busy right these days. I don’t have much time to blog about some nice stuff I have done in Krita in my “spare-thesis time”. I’m writing the thesis about brush engines I implemented for Krita and I wanted to have a brush that is very common among digital painters. I noticed that they heavily uses the basic Pixel brush. I decided I want to have some special pixel brush.

I stared to change the function that produce the brush mask and affects it’s softness. I selected Gaussian as it is nice function and I experiment with this function, but I found it complicated to control it (you setup sigma, uh what is sigma, you artist ask?). So let’s add some different function to the brush mask code. Oh, let’s put this decision to the artists hands, let’s give him some curve he can model as he want. We already has nice widget for that in Krita, so use it. So you can setup the brush mask by curve!

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): Kubuntu - back and gone

System & Utilities

As I told in my previous post, I am now using Linux at work. I have been running Arch at home since October, and I never looked back, but in this case, the servers are Ubuntu 9.04, so I decided to give Kubuntu a new chance. I installed Kubuntu 9.04 to stay in sync with the servers.

So, I installed it myself, then activated the Kubuntu backport PPAs to get the latest KDE version. Well, it was not the latest, but at least it was 4.3.1. It looks like they had stopped updating the Jaunty short before Karmic's release. Well, it wasn't bad.

Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Spring cleaning: Strigi becomes a meta-project

System & Utilities

A couple of large commits changed the organization of the Strigi project. As you probably know, Strigi provides the code to extract data from files and also allows for fast searching for files. We have reorganized the project to be a meta project. It is now split into five projects that can be compiled independently: libstreams, libstreamanalyzer, strigidaemon, strigiclient and strigiutils. This move has been done to make it easier for other projects to use the library parts of Strigi. KDE, especially Nepomuk, depends on libstreamanalyzer, which in turn depends on libstreams.

This reorganization has brought along a big cleanup of build files in the project. The resulting libraries and executables are essentially the same as the are in last release: this reorganization just moves the files and changes the build system the libraries more pronounced. Especially the Tracker developers should benefit from this move. They have requested a way to use libstreams and libstreamanalyzer without needing to use the rest of Strigi.

The versioning and release schedule of the five Strigi components will stay the same. The next release ...read more...

… long live the Plasma Shelf!

Plasma Shelf IconThere were two main problems with the Lancelot Part applet.

The first was the name. The name, although it does represent what the applet is technically, it doesn’t really say what the applet is meant for and what it does.

So, it is problematic when you see it in the applet browser, and it isn’t any better to see it when you drag and drop a folder onto the desktop and get the options to show it in the “Folder View” or “Lancelot Part”.

Configuration

The second problem was that a lot of users thought that Lancelot Part does nothing (aka doesn’t work) because when you add it by using the widgets browser, it is just an empty applet. (nobody really bothers reading the instructions these days).

Now, you can use the configuration ...read more...

Guillaume DE BURE (gdebure): Helping a cousin project : lemonPOS

System & Utilities

LemonPOS is a Point of Sale application powered by KDE 4.x. Its developper (Miguel Chavez Gamboa) asked in the KDE Finance mailing list for a bit of help spreading the word, so here is my (small) contribution to his project :o)

It seems that lemonPOS is a nearly unique example of Open Source Point of Sale, so go check it out, and congrats to Miguel !

LemonPOS is a member of the KDE Finance group, with other applications like KMyMoney, Kraft, Skrooge, Association Subscribers Manager (Arnaud, please, find a shorter name =D ), and others... The KDE Finance group will have its first sprint in Frankfurt in April (23rd-25th).

Ryan Rix (PhrkOnLsh): Polycom IP 501 on fedora talk

System & Utilities

So the FAD was epically awesome, and Paul sent us all home with gadgets :) This was the toy that I wanted the router bridge set up for; the bridge worked wonderfully after reviving the not dead(1) linksys WRT54Gv5 and putting dd-wrt micro on it. Anyways, yes, SIP Phones for all! And real cool ones at that. I got a Polycom IP 501:

Polycom IP 501 SIP Phone

It’s a nice, _extremely_ hackable phone, and works wonderfully with Fedora Talk. I guess I have to add some stickers to it too :)

(1): I told konqueror to remember the wrong password and username combo and for whatever reason the router never spit out a 403 forbidden, leading me to believe it was dead. oops!

Two Configuration Methods to Rule Them All

The phone is primarily designed to be used in corporate environments, and judging by the main configuration methods, this is (sometimes painfully) clear. ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: help KDE promo!

System & Utilities Hi all,
For those of you who always wanted to be part of the coolness that is KDE promo, I have compiled a few simple and short tasks below.

Organize a good set of booth boxes.
The current boothbox page I think makes clear what is needed. The things in the list need to be checked with other promo ppl and the booth team (just mail kde-promo) and then a list needs to be made where to get the items and what it would cost. Then the e.V. needs to be asked for money, the stuff needs to be bought, and a meeting set up at the Berlin office to assemble the boxes and celebrate. Get started by putting your name behind the tasks (and update them, add & remove stuff) on the kde promo Tasks page and introducing yourself and your good intentions on kde-promo at kde.org.

Needed skills: being stubborn and persistent.

You will learn: how to push people, make decisions, plan, and how nice Berlin is when going ...read more...

Shawn Starr (spstarr): A New Decade, a new beginning...

System & Utilities It's been awhile since I've posted. 2009 was a year of reflection and figuring out a new direction. Now that 2010 is here, things have been up on the up turn. I accepted a position at RIM (Research In Motion) and look forward to exciting stuff.

This does mean however, my KDE development as it stands, must cease, at least within Plasma. I enjoyed the time I had to help KDE grow, even if it was a small bit. It's sad letting go of a baby you nurtured and developed (in my case the weather plasmoid) but now someone else can make improvements and help it grow, I will be able to answer questions though.

Sometimes the directions you take make unexpected turns, but in the long run, a good future can be made.

Ariya Hidayat: morphing clock

System & Utilities

As I promised before, here is a fresh X2 example. Those who attended Bossa Conference 10 and followed my talk are lucky to have seen it for the first time there. In fact, this example is ridiculously simple that I am not surprised at all if somebody has done this ages ago.

Let's start with a screen capture, or two:

Basically the above shows an analog and digital clock running on my Nokia N900, hardly a shock. However, the fun part is when you switch the clock from analog to digital and vice versa. Check out this video, or watch directly on YouTube, courtesy of Signor Portale from Nokia/Qt, showing the morphing on Nokia 5800:

The trick is simple. Actually it's not even generic enough, meaning that you can't morph from an arbitrary path to another arbitrary path. However, for this clock use-case, the gross approximation is good enough. First, we need to convert the path into a polygon, which is done easily via ...read more...

Abhishek Patil (_abhishek): Installing Qt for Symbian SDK 4.6.2 on Linux

System & Utilities

As we all know now Qt can run on Symbian Phones but there is one problem all SDK’s and Tool chain of this officially supports windows.

So how about people like us(who’s default OS is Linux) cant we develop for Symbian using Qt?

In answer to this question I found many articles/blogpost how to install Qt for Symbian on Linux but this is the one which work for me http://lizardo.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/installing-qt-for-symbian-sdk-4-6-2-on-linux/ .

I followed this post every thing was perfect except 2 things

1) creating .sis(the Symbian executable) file.

2) creating installer.sis(the Symbian executable installer) file.

and i figured out how to do that too.

I re-witting the basic installation from http://lizardo.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/installing-qt-for-symbian-sdk-4-6-2-on-linux/ . plus my Hacks/Tricks .

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): Usability report on KMyMoney 1.0.2

System & Utilities

I should have posted this long time ago, at least 2 months. Mid last year, Pallavi Damera approached us for a new usability testing of KMyMoney. After some back and forth, it was decided to test on KMyMoney 1.0.2, which was just about to be released at that time, and the budget and ledger areas would be the main focus of the tests. Budget is like the dumb son of the views, having been without maintainer for a long time. and the ledger is the main view to enter information, and therefore the most important one.

Plasma Netbook Reference Platform

A couple days ago I downloaded a build of the Plasma Netbook Reference Platform (PNRP?), threw it on a USB key and for the first time ran it on an actual netbook. Up till now I'd been running it either on my laptop or on funky "developer devices" hooked up to a normal monitor. Putting it on one of the first-gen EEE PCs was really eye-opening. The whole form of the user interface makes so much more sense on a smaller screen, and it worked right out of the box quite nicely. There were a few issues here and there, and some new issues related to design came to light as I sat there watching P. use it (he loved it, and is now back to using that rather old netbook now because of the new interface on it). This is exactly what we hoped for when getting PNRP up and running: being able to easily see it in the proper context and get working quickly and effectively on improvements. Since my ...read more...

Simon Hausmann (tronical): This week (11) in QtWebKit trunk

System & Utilities

In this week the main focus has been on cleaning up Bugzilla. We formally spend Tuesday and Wednesday on triaging bugs, but even the days before and afterwards the cleanup continued. We started out on Tuesday morning with about 180 bugs and now we’re down to 10-20. Check out our bugs wiki page with links to filters, instructions on bug reporting and triaging:

http://trac.webkit.org/wiki/QtWebKitBugs

In addition we kept the Subversion server busy with a fair amount of fixes. I extracted the following highlights:

  • Several fixes in the DRT testing tool, among others by Chang (36139) and Laszlo (36139). The currently skipped layout tests remain a place with low hanging fruits and are a great way to get started with contributions.
  • Chang also fixed some bugs in the Qt part of the Canvas and Gradient implementations (36059, 36060).
  • Kim and Noam fixed bugs in the accelerated compositing code path (36034, 36158, 36219).
  • Antti landed the tiled backing store, which allows changing the rendering of QGraphicsWebView to cache the contents ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): gsoc!

System & Utilities

I had a realization yesterday. I was on my way home, after class, and it suddenly hit me: it’s 5:30pm. And the sun is still shining.
Winter is over. :)

So now it’s spring, and soon it will be summer, and you know what that means – summer of code! :)
Actually this blog post comes a bit late – If you’re a developer, you should have already put your project ideas up on the wiki, and if you’re a student you should already be talking to developers and reading those wiki pages to find a project that interests you. Still, it’s not too late to start – today google announced the list of accepted organizations. This didn’t really affect KDE – it’s a pretty safe bet that google will accept us – but for students who aren’t sure where to start, there’s now a nice list. :) Of course, I still say KDE’s the best community to work with ;)

So if you’re a student, and you haven’t ...read more...

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Junior Job: Port poxml away from Qt3Support

System & Utilities This is a junior job for all of you that want to get started in KDE development and don't know what to do, kdesdk/poxml is a set of tools used to convert KDE xml-based documentation to po (translator friendly format) and back. They are still using Qt3Support, that is not bad per se, but is not good either.

Doing the port should be straightforward if you have some Qt experience and read the docs on porting form Qt3 to Qt4.

Of course i'll be there to help and review the final diff, so what are you waiting for?

Ryan Rix (PhrkOnLsh): NetGear WGR614v9 as an accesspoint?

System & Utilities

This is something that has been on my todo list for a while now, so I figured I would crowdsource it…

In october, I acquired a Netgear WGR614v9 Wireless G router as an emergency router for ABLEconf 2009’s foss game day. It got the job done, but after that was basically useless because I had a much nicer (Busybox/Linux-based) D-link DIR615 Wireless N router. I spent quite a while trying to get the pesky netgear to properly act as an access point to bridge the computers that I have upstairs with the d link downstairsto no real avail — the only real useful guide, is NetGear’s knowledge base, which doesn’t address the creation of a wireless bridge, only a wired one (which I don’t see the point of but… :) )….

At the fedora marketing fad, I acquired some really cool hardware to try to play with. Unfortunately the device isn’t wireless enabled. :( Because of the way my network is laid out, everything in the upstairs of my ...read more...

Mauricio Piacentini (piacentini): Akademy-BR

System & Utilities Sandro has broken the news, and I am very glad to join him and talk about our little event. And I am also glad to blog again after several months of baby sitting :)

First, a bit of history: during the last months of 2009 we talked about a KDE sprint in Brazil, as a way to foster the local community and also because it is currently too expensive to fly all of this people to events in the US and Europe all the time. We reasoned that we could continue to send people (a few at a time) to the sprints and events, but something local was needed to care for the growth of KDE in Brazil.

Also, we did some discussion in order to identify the needs of the community, and what prevents more participation in the global project. As most of you have seen in the planet, there are people here working in projects related to kdegames, kdeedu, amarok, kdepim, plasma, kdevelop... But some of these contributions are developed in parallel, and only ...read more...

Klaas Freitag (dragotin): The KDE Plasma Reference

System & Utilities

Two days ago the KDE Plasma community announced that they are providing a live image of the Plasma Netbook Reference Platform. They provide this image to make it easy for all interested developers, users, journalists and geeks to check it out, work with, talk about and and improve it. The reference image is the result of an KDE effort utilizing the openSUSE Buildservice and it’s based on the openSUSE distribution.

What does that mean for us the openSUSE community? First of all it makes us very happy and proud. And we think it proves once again that the openSUSE projects’ distribution and its tools have the level where they stand the production pressure which comes with this kind of use cases. The Plasma Netbook Reference Edition is a lot of code to build and has many potential contributors, testers and users. Enabling people to fullfil these jobs can not be done with some script found lying around on the internet. It requires a high level of experience, professionality and stability ...read more...

Amarok 2.3.0 has just been released but the Amarok team is already working hard on the next release. Shortly after mainline opened for feature commits I pushed a feature that will hopefully result in the next Amarok release being based on user feedback even more than 2.3.0: LikeBack integration.

What is LikeBack?

Short answer: a client-server system for gathering context-related, anonymous and immediate user feedback.

Long answer: described in a blog post by Valerio Pilo, KMess developer.
