ownCloud Meetup to test devices in Berin

System & Utilities
Coming Wednesday, it's time for the monthly Berlin ownCloud meetup again. Last month, we wanted to play with some little development boards, install ownCloud on them and see what they could do. But we had over a dozen new participants join, turning the meetup mostly in a 'how to get an ownCloud development environment up and running' session.

That was great fun and I'd love to see everybody again - but the devices are also in the office, looking at us like they want attention. So, if you're interested in playing with Banana Pi, Raspberry Pi, cubietruck and similar stuff, come and join our meetup. Wednesday, starting at 7 at c-base Berlin in the main room, we'll grab some tables and bring devices, power cords and chargers and get going.

We'll see how far we can get, but goals include getting some decent performance statistics of the ...read more...

One year old: Document Liberation Project

System & Utilities

On the list of projects-I-would-like-to-contribute-to-but-no-time-yet it is one of the top ones: the Document Liberation Project. There are quite some files from old times on my storage devices whose content is locked away in binary blobs that act like safes whose keys got lost with the software that created the files. So it’s easy to guess how I feel towards such initiatives, allowing me to regain access to my very own data :)

The Document Liberation Project only was founded last year officially and now can see at least it’s first birthday. Not yet picked up much steam from new contributors so far, but then already serving e.g. users of Calligra, with libraries like LibRevenge, LibOdfGen, LibWpd, LibWpg, LibWps, LibVisio, LibEtonyek etc., to read in data from files in WordPerfect, MS Works, MS Visio, and Keynote formats.

Once the port of Calligra to Qt5/KF5 and thus version 3.0 is done, I hope to finally pick up the work (see here and here) on being able to read my old Corel Draw v4 files with ...read more...

Memories

System & Utilities

I first encountered Terry Pratchett's work in 1986, when Fergus McNeill's Quilled adventure game adaption of the Colour of Magic was released for the ZX Spectrum. Back then, Fergus was a bigger name in my mind than Terry Pratchett. I enjoyed the game a lot, but couldn't get the book anywhere -- this was 1986, the Netherlands, no Internet, Oosterhout, so no bookshop carrying any fantasy books in English beyond Lord of the Rings.

When I was in my first year in Leiden, eighteen years old, studying Sinology, a friend of mine and me, we went to London for a book-buying expedition. Forget about the Tower, the V&A or the National Portrait Gallery. We went for Foyles, The Fantasy Book Center and the British Library. I acquired the full set of Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" series, Frank got Lord Dunsany's autobiography, I got Clark Ashton Smith's collected short stories and Lord Dunsany's Gods of Pegana (straight, apparently, from the rare books locker from the University of Buffalo).

I also bought Mort.

That was the first Terry Pratchett ...read more...

debian/rake: A Tale of Rubies

System & Utilities

A while ago Rohan and I talked about the possibility of writing debian/rules in ruby rather than make. Even though this is not exactly policy compliant I was reasonably certain that this is possible, I just was not quite sure how much resistance the existing tools would give a rules file that is not written in make. So, I set out to hack up a debian/rules file using rake (a make-like build tool using ruby).

Before I dive into the actual hack, let me briefly outline how a Debian package build generally works, so we are all on the same page.

A Debian source package consists of a bunch of files in a debian/ subdirectory inside the actual upstream source. Most importantly and also at the very least it will contain:

  • changelog: the changelog
  • control: the metadata for the source package as well as the binary debs created (this for example includes the names of the packages as well as their dependencies and a ...read more...

Ariya Autumn castilla_sky horos

The plasma team and the Visual Design Group want to bring a large selection of wallpapers to plasma 5.3 and therefore We need YOU. Why because you are part of the community and my idea was to show the community, for example:

How Bread is Helping Make Breeze Cursors Pixel Perfect

System & Utilities

Some people accuse me of being a crazy person. Others are wrong. But occasionally the seeming madness of it all will bring about good things.

Last night was a sleepless night in all the good ways; I’m excited for the upcoming Plasma Sprint, and knowing I’ll be packing myself into a cigar tube and flinging myself across the North Atlantic Ocean is too much for me to sleep over. I had promised a commenter (too long ago) I would make green cursors, so I decided to make good on my word. After it took 5 minutes I needed more; and the wafting smell of my bread maker inspired me to make a Bread cursor theme. Once that was done, sufficiently delirious, I sent my weird bready message to the VDG. They appear to have ignored it – a wise decision. They’re busy people doing actual work.

Today I opened up the cursors to see what I had done.  Nothing too terrible, and I decided it was worth polishing them up if just for ...read more...

Students, Google Summer of Code is coming, but not quite yet....

System & Utilities

We've been seeing more and more questions about GSoC and how to get involved.

GSoC 2015 will be happening, but it is not yet time for orgs to even apply, much less be accepted. So we have no ideas page as yet for GSoC 2015.

That said, the best way to have your GSoC proposal accepted is to join
a team NOW and work with them on triaging and fixing bugs, and working
on old and new projects. As you work with your team members and the
codebase, you will be learn how to create a proposal which fits the needs
of the project, and also find willing and able mentors willing to guide you. Remember, mentoring is hard work. Probable mentors want to choose students they can trust to complete their proposal successfully.

The time to prepare for GSoC is now -- but it is not the time for
creating proposals yet. The important part of GSoC is embedding

New porting helper: convert-to-cmake-automoc.pl

System & Utilities

Disclaimer

First time I wrote more than a one-liner in Perl, the Swiss Army chainsaw of scripting languages. After quickly skimming the beginner's tutorial, (and no longer just copying Perl one-liners from Stackoverflow and friends), I consider myself ready to write porting helpers for kde-dev-scripts.git! Hey!

If you still don't know those scripts, check them out now. They're tremendously helpful, especially those for porting KDE4-based applications to Qt5/KF5. I wouldn't want to miss them!

Make the most out of CMake's Automoc

Now there's a new porting helper: convert-to-cmake-automoc.pl, just committed today with https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/121991/.

This script tries to remove includes such as #include "<basename>.moc" from cpp files to make source code suitable for CMake's Automoc feature.

There are some pitfalls, though:

  • In some cases, one still needs to #include "<basename>.moc"; for example when the moc-generated code uses classes declared inside the .cpp file (hint: K_PLUGIN_FACTORY) -- in this case the moc file cannot be compiled in a separate translation unit.

  • In some cases, one still needs to #include ...read more...

Help Design Breeze Icons

System & Utilities

Now you can help design new icons for the Breeze icon theme!

Uri Herrera, icon designer of myth and legend, just put together some fantastic detailed icon design guidelines for the Breeze icon theme. He posted them to the wiki on the Breeze upstream repo

They're now integrated into the KDE Human Interface Guidelines. Among the full set of guidelines Uri put together are naming, categorization and usage guidelines and we're working to get those into the HIG as well.

Putting together an icon theme is a huge effort and there are a missing icons we could use your help with. You can submit your icons for review and inclusion on the VDG forums.

All hail Uri!

New TODO application that blocks distractions while you work

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

TL;DR: flow is a sticky TODO manager with support for the pomodoro technique and blocks distractions (cat pictures too) while you're focusing on a task: git, AUR, Windows, OSX

"A good task manager application is one that can beat a .txt file."

Even though I was (am?) KOrganizer's maintainer I could never get used to its TODO view. It simply didn't fit my workflow. The only time I used it was when I was programming it. For my important stuff, I used a text file instead, and was happy.

Meanwhile I've been experimenting with the Pomodoro Technique to help me focus at work and thought it would be fun to create an hybrid between todo manager and pomodoro app in QML.

So, what do we need to make a better organizer than notepad ?

Here's the 5 ingredients I chose to put in flow:

  • Sticky
  • Pomodoro
  • Block distractions
  • When, not what
  • Light

kdev-qmljs 1.7.0 released

System & Utilities

I’m pleased to announce that the kdev-qmljs plugin that I’ve developed during the spring and the summer is finally released in version 1.7.0. This version is compatible with KDevPlatform 1.7.0 and KDevelop 4.7.0. You can download the source tarball on download.kde.org.

  • SHA256Sum: 70927785de7791335eda43b55ef7742af7915425823d5f70b97edac1828681e1
  • SHA1Sum: 78ad0f72ffa091f6aff5ea633eb5f135e9d625f3
  • MD5Sum: e51b93519e4eb028a8863c5d7bc96848

This release contains all the features developed during the summer. It adds support for the QML and Javascript languages in KDevelop and is able to recognize Javascript variables, functions, “objects” (based on prototype oriented programming) and most of its standard library (along with the DOM standard library and core Node.js modules). The QML language supports Qt 4 and Qt 5 modules, custom binary modules (modules for which you have an .so file), modules in your application and all sorts of import statements.

More advanced support for Node.js, richer QML helper tools and some other features will be available in the KF5 version of the plugin. I hope to have time to work on it shortly.

The tarball that I linked hereabove is known to compile and work on Fedora and a preliminary package ...read more...

Sharing with Qt on Android

System & Utilities

We just release a new version of GiraffPanic – a logic mobile game written with Qt and QML. In the new version we give the users the possibility to share unlock codes with each other to unlock new levels. So we wanted to have a nice way to share the code between devices without any need to copy paste them (codes) into another application. After trying a lot of different approaches (that did not work), we found it is possible to invoke the native Android share menu from within our application. Using this method keeps our own code quite tidy and supports all the ways of sharing provided by the host device.

By using sharing that way the application does not need any special permissions.

Here is a preview of what the end result might look like:

digiKam: Season of KDE Update

System & Utilities

I’ve been slow on updating the progress of the project — I apologize for that. I’m working on implementing an improved noise estimation function for digiKam.

Currently, I’m working on a CLI version of the implementation to better understand the noise estimation process. The implementation consists of calculating the gradient covariance matrix of the image. For an image patch y, it’s defined as follows:

C_{y}=G_{y}^T*G_{y}

where G_{y} = \left[\begin{array}{cc} D_{hy} & D_{vy} \\ \end{array}\right]

D_{hy} and D_{vy} are the horizontal and vertical derivatives of the image patch respectively. The resulting matrix is then decomposed to get the eigen values.

To put it briefly, the gradient of the image patch gives us the differences in pixels. We then decompose the covariance matrix to get eigen values whose values represent the strength of the image patch. Specifically, the larger the maximum eigen value, the richer the texture is, in ...read more...

5 steps to organizing a meetup

System & Utilities
For both beginners and pros a meetup around a subject can be a great resource. It's a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, practice or work on things together and and of course meet new and interesting people.

Most people think organizing a meetup is a big deal, that you need to know a lot about the subject at hand and so on. This is most certainly not the case, and to illustrate that, let me simply share 5 simple steps to go through to organize a meetup.

1. Have a goal or subject

Of course, you have some idea of what the meetup should be about. Make it a bit more concrete: come up with some questions you'd like to get answers to, some things you find difficult, strange or simply interesting. This will form the basis under your meetup! Especially for a first meetup, a concrete thing-to-discuss helps both attract people and makes it ...read more...

My thoughts on the Gnome trademark dispute

System & Utilities

Unless you've been living under a rock today you would have seen that Groupon™ have been trying to use a trademark that belongs to GNOME™. Today GNOME™ started raising money to fight a legal battle.

I know there have been ongoing private discussions for months, and even though I have no idea what was said I do have full faith that if it got to the point of Gnome threatening to take legal action, it's because they felt they needed to.

It seems to have worked.

Communities Unified

What I loved to see most about this was I opened my G+/Facebook/Twitter feeds to see all of my KDE colleagues resharing this piece and donating money. Even /r/linux on Reddit, normally a somewhat feisty community, was filled with comments like "I don't use Gnome, but I'm going to support them".

Working together, supporting each other is what us open source communities should be about.

We're Not Easily Pushed Over

I don't think there was any attempt or conspiracy to try and destroy Gnome, but I do think there must have been ...read more...

Last week in Krita – Week 45

System & Utilities

UI

Scott Petrovic revamped the UI of the transform tools for better readability and usability, and is now heading towards changing around the brush-settings.

Boudewijn  changed around the way background colour works: now Krita uses white as the default transparency-fill colour. You can set this from opaque to transparent in the new-file dialogue to get the transparency checkers back. The new file dialogue will remember this for next time as well! There’s still some bugs involved with this, but hopefully they’ll be fixed soon.

The crop tool now has grey handles instead of ugly yellow ones.

Kickstarter

Dmitry Kazakov is still busy on the transform masks. Transform masks are saved transformations so they may be applied non-destructively. The major holdback is several bugs which make the transform masks a little glitchy and unpredictable. In effect, this makes the current work on the transform masks similar to polishing an octogonal wheel till it’s round: Without it, we’d still have a wheel, but it would be uncomfortable to use.

There’s a seperate branch for Layer Effects started. Currently, the plan is ...read more...
