GSoC 2015 Week #2 with Amarok

System & Utilities
The second week of GSoC coding period has come to an end.

In case you haven't read my previous blog posts then I should start by saying that I am working on porting Amarok to Qt5/KF5 as part of the GSoC 2015 program under Mark Kretschmann (markey) and Myriam Schweingruber (mamarok).

So this week some of the changes that I made are as follows:
  • Changed KIcon to QIcon. If anyone is using the porting script in kde-dev-scripts for this, then be careful that the script doesn't affect the return types of the functions which previously returned an instance of KIcon. This means that if the return type of a function is KIcon then you have to change it to QIcon by yourself. Not a major inconvenience, if you ask me.
  • Added include directory of phonon (I added PHONON_INCLUDES instead of PHONON_INCLUDE_DIR) to the cmake path in which header files are searched. Adding this wasn't important before but now with Phonon4Qt5 it is important. More information can be found here.
  • I will ...read more...

Getting started!

System & Utilities

How about that!? Google Summer of Code coding period started ( quite a while ago though ) and I thought I'd share some of my enthusiasm with you!

Firstly, impression about the program itself:

From what I've seen so far, the best part is definitely having the chance to code along with such great people, while getting precious feedback. This is what I've lacked so far in my experience as a student, and it certainly is the best way to get introduced to open-source software ( especially KDE :D ).

Now about the project:

My work this summer will revolve around offering OpenStreetMap( OSM ) support to Marble: this will involve offering the user a complete experience: from opening OSM files, to viewing and editing them, to finally exporting them in ".osm" files.

Some of the work is already done, yet it still requires some tweaking, some technical bits will involve some code refactoring, and some parts( the most exciting ones ) consist of creating specialized tools for the map editor.

Here's a sample to give you an ...read more...

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

System & Utilities

In case you missed the latest news, Jonathan Riddell has been accused by the Ubuntu Community Council (CC) of breaking Ubuntu Code of Conduct (CoC) and has been asked to resign from his position of leader of the Kubuntu project (a title which actually does not exist and which he never claimed to hold)

I had the chance of meeting Jonathan when I joined Canonical in 2009. I was a bit intimidated during my first Canonical real-life meeting, but Jonathan carried me around and went out of his way to introduce me to many of my then new colleagues.

Since then he has always been one of the friendliest person I know. We often shared rooms during Canonical, Ubuntu or KDE events and went on to be colleagues again at Blue Systems. I believe Jonathan kindness is one of the reasons why the Kubuntu community has grown into such a welcoming and closely-knit group of people.

Sometimes passion carries us over too far and we say or do things we should not, but until now all ...read more...

Rust 1.0.0, NASA Software Catalog, and more open source news

System & Utilities

In this week's edition of our open source news roundup, we take a look at the release of Rust 1.0.0, NASA's Software Catalog, and more! After a lengthy development process, the Mozilla-backed Rust programming language had its first stable release last week. Rust is a systems programming language designed to compete with C and C++ in terms of performance, but unlike those languages, Rust has advanced features built in to make it much, much harder to write code containing security flaws caused by poor memory management.

Updates on the ocs-client project

System & Utilities

Ok, I've started to design the web client interface, here there are two screenshot of what it looks like in this early stage (both desktop and mobile devices scales), nothing is final and everything may be changed in the next days talking with the community and collecting ideas.

Again, “PlasmaStore” is just a placeholder I'm going to talk with the community about possible names for the client.. so far I was thinking at something about “PlasmaShare” due to the fact that the opensource philosophy goes around free code sharing and community collaboration so although it's going to look like an applications and desktop stuff store I just  don't think that the word “store” suits it.

debian/rake: Ruby DH Sequencing?

System & Utilities

In my previous post I looked at the possibility of using rake, a Ruby build tool, instead of make to write debian/rules files. While that turned out to not be entirely impossible as far as the core dpkg-* utilities used to build Debian packages are concerned, wiring it up with the debhelper ‘dh’ command sequencer appears unfortunately impossible without changes to dh itself.

Clearly the solution here is to write our own sequencer in Ruby! To do that we will first have to understand what a sequencer does though.

In the post about using rake for debian/rules I already briefly outlined what the Debian package build process looks like and that it is, for the most part, driven by a tool called dpkg-buildpackage. The rules file itself is mostly just a harness receiving commands from dpkg-buildpackage and forwarding them to the dh sequencer.

We already looked at the most trivial of rules files previously and did not spend time on looking into how this ...read more...

Using Digikam and ownCloud to share family pictures

System & Utilities

Soon after my daughter was born, I became increasingly concerned about sharing her pictures in Facebook. I’d usually post one picture of her, and see it quickly reshared by family and friend. Yes, it was flattering, but with privacy concerns growing daily, it left an uneasy feeling.
So, at one time I stopped posting in Facebook (I’m mostly a lurker nowadays) and most important stopped posting family pictures.
I would share some pictures over email, but it’s not easy and you can only share a few pictures each time. I kept looking for a solution that would allow sharing pictures without losing control, and it had to fit my workflow.
I use digikam on MySQL to organize my pictures (btw, upgrade to 2.9, performance is much improved!). I’ll import the pictures from my camera, organize into albums (family, work, vacations, etc), check for color balance, etc. tag faces and rate the ones I like most.
I run an owncloud server I use for the family. And ownCloud has a way to share via a public link, ...read more...

Apply agile methodologies to upstream development environments.... if you can.

System & Utilities

 Introduction

When the Agile Manifesto became popular and based on them, agile methodologies like Scrum, XP or Kanban, upstream development was in its early stages as collaboration ecosystems of companies.

Only a few for profit organizations embraced developing upstream back then. Most of them were small and heavily influenced by FLOSS engineers vision. Free software communities were basically driven on personal basis or the very lucky ones, together with "sponsored developers". In general, these ecosystem were not part of companies strategies.

Today, more and more companies are getting fully involved in community projects as stakeholders, not just consumers or simple contributors.

They frequently start as consumers, then, little by little they become "upstreamers", that is, they share/publish their code with the goal to have it merged (upstream code). Not without effort, many of them become successful contributors.  After some time, some of them end up understanding that is "cheaper" to play by the project rules. In summary, they ...read more...

ownCloud Meetup to test devices in Berin

System & Utilities
Coming Wednesday, it's time for the monthly Berlin ownCloud meetup again. Last month, we wanted to play with some little development boards, install ownCloud on them and see what they could do. But we had over a dozen new participants join, turning the meetup mostly in a 'how to get an ownCloud development environment up and running' session.

That was great fun and I'd love to see everybody again - but the devices are also in the office, looking at us like they want attention. So, if you're interested in playing with Banana Pi, Raspberry Pi, cubietruck and similar stuff, come and join our meetup. Wednesday, starting at 7 at c-base Berlin in the main room, we'll grab some tables and bring devices, power cords and chargers and get going.

We'll see how far we can get, but goals include getting some decent performance statistics of the ...read more...

One year old: Document Liberation Project

System & Utilities

On the list of projects-I-would-like-to-contribute-to-but-no-time-yet it is one of the top ones: the Document Liberation Project. There are quite some files from old times on my storage devices whose content is locked away in binary blobs that act like safes whose keys got lost with the software that created the files. So it’s easy to guess how I feel towards such initiatives, allowing me to regain access to my very own data :)

The Document Liberation Project only was founded last year officially and now can see at least it’s first birthday. Not yet picked up much steam from new contributors so far, but then already serving e.g. users of Calligra, with libraries like LibRevenge, LibOdfGen, LibWpd, LibWpg, LibWps, LibVisio, LibEtonyek etc., to read in data from files in WordPerfect, MS Works, MS Visio, and Keynote formats.

Once the port of Calligra to Qt5/KF5 and thus version 3.0 is done, I hope to finally pick up the work (see here and here) on being able to read my old Corel Draw v4 files with ...read more...

Memories

System & Utilities

I first encountered Terry Pratchett's work in 1986, when Fergus McNeill's Quilled adventure game adaption of the Colour of Magic was released for the ZX Spectrum. Back then, Fergus was a bigger name in my mind than Terry Pratchett. I enjoyed the game a lot, but couldn't get the book anywhere -- this was 1986, the Netherlands, no Internet, Oosterhout, so no bookshop carrying any fantasy books in English beyond Lord of the Rings.

When I was in my first year in Leiden, eighteen years old, studying Sinology, a friend of mine and me, we went to London for a book-buying expedition. Forget about the Tower, the V&A or the National Portrait Gallery. We went for Foyles, The Fantasy Book Center and the British Library. I acquired the full set of Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" series, Frank got Lord Dunsany's autobiography, I got Clark Ashton Smith's collected short stories and Lord Dunsany's Gods of Pegana (straight, apparently, from the rare books locker from the University of Buffalo).

I also bought Mort.

That was the first Terry Pratchett ...read more...

debian/rake: A Tale of Rubies

System & Utilities

A while ago Rohan and I talked about the possibility of writing debian/rules in ruby rather than make. Even though this is not exactly policy compliant I was reasonably certain that this is possible, I just was not quite sure how much resistance the existing tools would give a rules file that is not written in make. So, I set out to hack up a debian/rules file using rake (a make-like build tool using ruby).

Before I dive into the actual hack, let me briefly outline how a Debian package build generally works, so we are all on the same page.

A Debian source package consists of a bunch of files in a debian/ subdirectory inside the actual upstream source. Most importantly and also at the very least it will contain:

  • changelog: the changelog
  • control: the metadata for the source package as well as the binary debs created (this for example includes the names of the packages as well as their dependencies and a ...read more...

Plasma 5.3 wallpaper contest

System & Utilities

Hi

Today I want to talk about wallpapers and the great community.

Hugo made the plasma 5.1 wallpaper and kver the wallpaper for plasma 5.2. The wallpapers are great and a good standard setting but in the past there are more than one wallpaper available in plasma. In the kde-wallpapers-4.8.x package there are Air, Ariya, Autumn, Azul, Blue Wood, Castilla Sky, Finally Summer in Germany, Flying Field, Fog on the West Lake, Fresh Moring, Grass, Hanami, Horos and Media Life.

Ariya Autumn castilla_sky horos

The plasma team and the Visual Design Group want to bring a large selection of wallpapers to plasma 5.3 and therefore We need YOU. Why because you are part of the community and my idea was to show the community, for example:

How Bread is Helping Make Breeze Cursors Pixel Perfect

System & Utilities

Some people accuse me of being a crazy person. Others are wrong. But occasionally the seeming madness of it all will bring about good things.

Last night was a sleepless night in all the good ways; I’m excited for the upcoming Plasma Sprint, and knowing I’ll be packing myself into a cigar tube and flinging myself across the North Atlantic Ocean is too much for me to sleep over. I had promised a commenter (too long ago) I would make green cursors, so I decided to make good on my word. After it took 5 minutes I needed more; and the wafting smell of my bread maker inspired me to make a Bread cursor theme. Once that was done, sufficiently delirious, I sent my weird bready message to the VDG. They appear to have ignored it – a wise decision. They’re busy people doing actual work.

Today I opened up the cursors to see what I had done.  Nothing too terrible, and I decided it was worth polishing them up if just for ...read more...

Students, Google Summer of Code is coming, but not quite yet....

System & Utilities

We've been seeing more and more questions about GSoC and how to get involved.

GSoC 2015 will be happening, but it is not yet time for orgs to even apply, much less be accepted. So we have no ideas page as yet for GSoC 2015.

That said, the best way to have your GSoC proposal accepted is to join
a team NOW and work with them on triaging and fixing bugs, and working
on old and new projects. As you work with your team members and the
codebase, you will be learn how to create a proposal which fits the needs
of the project, and also find willing and able mentors willing to guide you. Remember, mentoring is hard work. Probable mentors want to choose students they can trust to complete their proposal successfully.

The time to prepare for GSoC is now -- but it is not the time for
creating proposals yet. The important part of GSoC is embedding

New porting helper: convert-to-cmake-automoc.pl

System & Utilities

Disclaimer

First time I wrote more than a one-liner in Perl, the Swiss Army chainsaw of scripting languages. After quickly skimming the beginner's tutorial, (and no longer just copying Perl one-liners from Stackoverflow and friends), I consider myself ready to write porting helpers for kde-dev-scripts.git! Hey!

If you still don't know those scripts, check them out now. They're tremendously helpful, especially those for porting KDE4-based applications to Qt5/KF5. I wouldn't want to miss them!

Make the most out of CMake's Automoc

Now there's a new porting helper: convert-to-cmake-automoc.pl, just committed today with https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/121991/.

This script tries to remove includes such as #include "<basename>.moc" from cpp files to make source code suitable for CMake's Automoc feature.

There are some pitfalls, though:

  • In some cases, one still needs to #include "<basename>.moc"; for example when the moc-generated code uses classes declared inside the .cpp file (hint: K_PLUGIN_FACTORY) -- in this case the moc file cannot be compiled in a separate translation unit.

  • In some cases, one still needs to #include ...read more...

Help Design Breeze Icons

Now you can help design new icons for the Breeze icon theme!

Uri Herrera, icon designer of myth and legend, just put together some fantastic detailed icon design guidelines for the Breeze icon theme. He posted them to the wiki on the Breeze upstream repo

They're now integrated into the KDE Human Interface Guidelines. Among the full set of guidelines Uri put together are naming, categorization and usage guidelines and we're working to get those into the HIG as well.

Putting together an icon theme is a huge effort and there are a missing icons we could use your help with. You can submit your icons for review and inclusion on the VDG forums.

New TODO application that blocks distractions while you work

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

TL;DR: flow is a sticky TODO manager with support for the pomodoro technique and blocks distractions (cat pictures too) while you're focusing on a task: git, AUR, Windows, OSX

"A good task manager application is one that can beat a .txt file."

Even though I was (am?) KOrganizer's maintainer I could never get used to its TODO view. It simply didn't fit my workflow. The only time I used it was when I was programming it. For my important stuff, I used a text file instead, and was happy.

Meanwhile I've been experimenting with the Pomodoro Technique to help me focus at work and thought it would be fun to create an hybrid between todo manager and pomodoro app in QML.

So, what do we need to make a better organizer than notepad ?

Here's the 5 ingredients I chose to put in flow:

  • Sticky
  • Pomodoro
  • Block distractions
  • When, not what
  • Light
