Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): About pragmatics and loonies

System & Utilities

Reading blog posts from Aaron or Jos, I notice there has been a discussion lately about corporate sponsorship and how that may influence the direction taken by KDE.

Also, I noticed some messages in identi.ca from Jos about FSF and FSFE. That prompted a small exchange between him and me, and it was also the trigger for this post, which is a very personal opinion piece about corporations and free software projects.

Tom Albers: Important: Update your email address

System & Utilities

As you all might know or not, KDE is moving to git. With applying for an svn you had the option to choose for a https account with a password. With the move to git now in high gear we have to convert all those accounts to ssh accounts.

What will happen is that we will send every https user personal invitation to go a to a webpage. On this webpage you can upload your public ssh key or indicate that the account should be disabled, because you don’t use it anymore.

The invitations will be send in like two weeks. Every invitation that bounces will probably mean that the account will be disabled. So we can not stress enough that you check your email address which is associated with your account. You can find it in kde-common/accounts. You can simply do a checkout and commit changes to your own entry.

Ssh users dont have to do anything, your public keys will migrate automatically. Https users, please wait for the invitation, as we will automate most ...read more...

Michael Krog: Qash is online!

System & Utilities It's finally here. Qash is officially online.

What does it mean?
I means that everyone can jump to qashapp.com and create their own store for free - and easily have their own cash register.

What now?
We have a list of features on our roadmap which we will implement over time. One of them is creating a default platform for the hardware we are going to sell(which may very well be a KDE-based platform).

Jens-Michael Hoffmann (jmho): How to install multiple versions of Marble

System & Utilities

Sometimes it is helpful to be able to have several versions of Marble installed and have these versions separated. One possibility is to use different user accounts, one for each Marble version. Another possibility using only one user account involves some minor changes to the Marble source. I’m going to explain how to do the latter. As examples we use the Marbles of KDE 4.4, 4.5 and trunk.

For a Marble version being installed separately it has to have a separate configuration file, a separate user data directory and a separate installation directory. For the first and second part we have to modify the Marble source, the third part is being done by the build system. At the moment of this writing development for KDE 4.5 takes place in svn trunk while development for kdeedu 4.5 (which includes Marble) takes place in the 4.5 branch.
So without further ado:

Setup different kdesvn-build configurations per branch

KDE 4.4.x (Marble 0.9.x): $HOME/.kdesvn-4.4-buildrc

global
source-dir ~/kde-devel/kdesvn-4.4
kdedir ~/kde-devel/kde-4.4
qtdir /usr
branch 4.4
svn-server svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde
cmake-options -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debugfull
end global

Danny Kukawka: Hacking osc

System & Utilities
Last month I found some time to take a look at osc to fix issues and add some stuff I was missing since I have to work with build.opensuse.org and the SUSE internal buildservice (e.g. for updates and maintenance of our enterprise products).

Yes, I know it's some weeks old and now integrated, but anyway. Here is what I've done:
  • added new 'osc getbinaries REPOSITORY' to checkout the RPMs for all architectures, including the source RPMs, into subdirectories [here]
  • fix 'osc my' to get the apiurl from checked out packages if possible [here]
  • make sure that global option -A always works too in a directory with a checked out package [here]
  • add run_pager() and make osc log/diff work like git log/diff (call less by default to display the result of diff) [here]
  • fixed some close() statements and some other warnings [here]

Ryan Rix (PhrkOnLsh): aseigo is forcing me to blag

System & Utilities

yes, forcing, I’m such an abused little critter, it’s so bad, I’ll need counseling. :(

Over the last few weeks I have been putting the finishing touches on the plasma KPart plugin… It looks pretty good now, but still lacks a bit of the bits to really make it shine, including an API to allow applications to interact with the Plasma APIs on a more intimate level, rather than just "load widget foo, and I’ll get out of the way".

The current state of our Plasma dashboard is looking pretty good. And, what’s that? A special dates plugin! Thanks to the really awesome Akonadi and Calendar plugins (I owe fregl massive amounts of cookies/hugs for the calendar dataengine improvements!) it was mostly simple for me to write that widget. As you can tell, it still needs some layout lovin’, and the code is kinda nasty in some places, but it’s a great start.

That’s where I am this week :)

Victor Carbune (carbonix): KStars now has a view of its own for SkyObjects

System & Utilities This week was the first week of our examination session at university. Even though I had a quite hard exam on the beginning of the week, I have worked on a class which will be used in KStars for displaying lists of objects, having a particular context menu, adapted for KStars SkyObjects.

Yesterday, together with Dragos, a friend and class mate who is currently a Gnome Google Summer of Code Student we decided to do a whole day coding sprint on our projects, since university exams tend to keep us temporary away from our work.

I consider the overall a result interesting and really useful. The class on which I've worked, KSObjectList extends QTableView and will be used wherever a list of SkyObjects might appear in KStars. For the moment, it replaces the standard QTableView in the Observing List (a tool in KStars which permits users to plan their observing session) and will be used in a more complex search query dialog on the database.

KSObjectList current has the following:

Cornelius Schumacher: Hackweek V: Graphical SUSE Studio Client

System & Utilities Hackweek V is over and I can happily report success. My graphical SUSE Studio client is functional and has the first cool features implemented. The focus of the client is not to duplicate the functionality of the SUSE Studio web interface, but to provide those features, which are hard or not possible to do on the server. This is stuff like managing downloads, running and deploying appliances locally, or native access to testdrive. From this list I got the native testdrive done. On the click of a button, the client starts a testdrive on the SUSE Studio servers and then connects with an embedded native client. This gives great performance and a very smooth and integrated experience.

The client uses the HTTP API of SUSE Studio to talk to the server. This way it gets the list of appliances and builds of a user and can operate on this data. It ...read more...

Abhishek Patil (_abhishek): Using vtkRenderWindow with QGraphicsView

System & Utilities

We are about to begin on a project that requires us to have floating and transparent widgets over VTK render-window output. About a year back, we had wanted to provide something similar to VTK Designer 2. We wanted users to have the ability to load UI (created using Qt Designer) directly on the VTK output window. At that time (you can follow the thread here) we were unable to come up with something satisfactory.

With the recent changes in Qt, it is now possible for us to have vtkRenderWindow within QGraphicsView. Infact we can now have vtkRenderWindow paint on to a QGLWidget viewport of QGraphicsView. Thats exactly what the vtkQtGraphicsViewRenderWindow class allows us to do.

The class is defined as follows

#ifdef Q_WS_WIN
#include \"vtkWin32OpenGLRenderWindow.h\"
typedef vtkWin32OpenGLRenderWindow vtkRenderWindowClass;
#endif

#ifdef Q_WS_X11
#include \"vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow.h\"
typedef vtkXOpenGLRenderWindow vtkRenderWindowClass;
#endif

class vtkQtGraphicsViewRenderWindow : public QGraphicsView,
public vtkRenderWindowClass
{
Q_OBJECT

public:
vtkQtGraphicsViewRenderWindow(QWidget* parent = 0);
~vtkQtGraphicsViewRenderWindow();
....
};

Since vtkQtGraphicsViewRenderWindow is a subclass of both QGraphicsView and vtkRenderWindow,
- we can add any QGraphicsItem to its scene.

Adenilson Cavalcanti (Savago): libgcal 0.9.4 released

System & Utilities
Sweet! But what the heck is this ‘libgcal’ thingie? For starts, the name can and is misleading, since it should read as ‘library for google calendar’ but in reality, it implements both Contacts and Calendar google data protocol.

When I got it started, back in February of 2008, it was supposed to implement just calendar, but later on I realized that adding contact support only required +25% of code on it (thanks for well modular software design). Back then,  there was no other good alternative for any C/C++ programmer that would fit the following requirements:
  • easy to use;
  • well documented;
  • few dependencies;

So, I got my library started! After studying the google data protocol 1.0 (at the time) for while, I realized that using XPath would make my life way easier than say, browsing through the DOM tree searching for the attributes and tags that I wanted.

At that time, Qt didn’t have support for XPath (it only started with 4.5), so I went with libxml. For networking I ...read more...

Aditya Bhatt (adityab): digiKam GSoC progress : libface with a ‘k’

System & Utilities

This is a progress report after a long time.

Since my last post, my work has involved hours of staring at debug outputs and fixing bugs in libface. I guess I can now say that libface is very usable. Apart from fixing certain segfaults, I also expanded the API a bit.

Till now, you could only give images for detection by passing a filename string to LibFace::detectFaces as:

LibFace libFace = LibFace(DETECT, "."); // Only for Detection
vector<Face> result;
result = libFace.detectFaces(string(argv[i]));

which is from one of the programs in the examples directory. Not a very good idea to load an image from the filesystem if digiKam already has it in memory.

Fortunately now this has been overloaded with :

result = libFace.detectFaces(img->imageData,img->width, img->height, img->widthStep, img->depth, img->nChannels);

Where img is of type IplImage, the OpenCV native image type. This is useful because now digiKam et al won’t have to use IplImage, as the new way is API-agnostic.

Another thing which I modified, does not change the interface, but ...read more...

Daniel Molkentin [Qt Labs] (danimo): Qt Creator 2.0: It’s a Release Candidate!

System & Utilities

It’s been a few weeks since the Beta. It has been a rather disappointing start of the summer here in Berlin, with only one really sunny weekend. This means no excuses for escaping the office for a jump into the water or grabbing an ice-cold beer. Instead, we’ve seized the time well. How? By polishing Qt Creator, resulting in 1038 commits since the beta release. The community feedback has been very valuable in this.

We also made sure that Creator works hand-in-hand with the Nokia Qt SDK, a release candidate of which has also been released today. One effect is that debugging on the Nokia N8, the first Symbian-based Nokia phone shipping with Qt, does now work. Another focus of this release is the documentation, which has been greatly improved to cover a lot more aspects of Qt Creator and how to develop with ...read more...

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): KMyMoney now in extragear

System & Utilities

Two weeks and a couple of days after going into kdereview, we got the approval to move to extragear. During these 2 weeks, almost all remaining krazy warnings were solved by our team. We are now down to only a handful warnings and most of them are false positives. The only other issue that was raised during the review was our inclusion of kdchart within our source code. That will be solved when KDAB releases that as a separate package.

Jeff Mitchell (jefferai): Prosody, the first password-hashing XMPP server

System & Utilities

(At least, AFAIK!)

Recently, I have been contributing to another project outside of KDE: the Prosody XMPP server. Prosody is fairly new (the project began in 2008) and is written in Lua. I've been using it for a long time now, and it's a really nice, rock-solid server. The code is also pretty hackable, being both modular and fairly clean.

My impetus for working on it was that at work we have been using the OpenFire XMPP server. It's a big Java beast and is all but unmaintained at this point. Since I've had good experiences with Prosody and it already supported most of the functionality I needed, I decided to see how it handled a migration at work.

One thing it *didn't* support was pluggable authentication. The basics for this were in existence, but the code was not yet right. After some pestering, Matthew Wild and Waqas Hussain, the two main Prosody developers, fleshed out the API necessary, and I began to work on separating out the built-in authentication code into a plugin that could be ...read more...

Petr Vanek: openSUSE and SLE repositories for TOra and Oracle stuff

System & Utilities

Have you ever asked: “how I can install TOra or Oracle client for my favourite language into my suse system?”

It was always a pain mainly due the brilliant Oracle licensing policy. Now it should be a little bit easier – just because I started special repositories with Oracle related packages.

Now it contains:

  • TOra, universal DB development/admin tool, stable version
  • TOra development snapshot
  • python-cx_Oracle, Python bindings to Oracle
  • php5-pecl-oci8, PHP binding to Oracle
  • misc packages required to build software mentioned above

Of course there can be more – I’m open to suggestions (and contributions too of course).

Please, follow the instruction on the main page of the project.

Alessandro Diaferia (alediaferia): PMC - little status update

System & Utilities Yo ppl, long time not posting anything: too bad :/

For those who still don't know PMC stands for Plasma Media Center.
I know you're not hearing back from the media center land but we are working hard to deliver a great user experience plus we're shy developers and don't want too much attention :p. Joking, actually we'll show you what we're achieving so far as soon as we get something usable.

The little status update is about the Nepomuk influence in PMC which finally is taking its path. I've just added the ability to browse through Nepomuk resources. No boring navigation through your pictures path, just fire PMC up and browse through the indexed photos.

When nepomuk is enabled you can add the folders you want pictures from. Currently such paths have to be present in the nepomukstrigirc config file but soon PMC will check this for you and eventually add them. If you don't specify any path PMC ...read more...

We are very happy to work together with KDAB, Intevation and G10Code on a project to make Kontact available on mobile phones.  This is great as there is no really good mobile mail client around and as it is important for free software to offer such a crucial part of the mobile software infrastructure…

Now we are looking for people that are intersted in building up a testing and feedback community for this project. This community will be integrated into the further development and will help us by this to make the mobile version of Kontact rock!

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Dancer

System & Utilities

Even before Roop took me for a visit to the temple at Somnathpur I was already interested in Indian sculpture. When I came home, I wanted to try my hand at the style. It's turned out reasonably well, as you can see. I had a lot of fun figuring out the most important elements of the style, but it's still recognizably my work. I'm sure I'll give it another try later on.

From Temple Dancer

The full set of pictures is on Picasaweb, but be warned of nudity, she isn't wearing much except for some jewelry. I really need to learn to take better pictures: stretching the color with digikam is easy enough, that isn't the problem. But the distortion when making a picture of a statuette 25cm high is pretty fierce. this one came out quite well, but others have a very distorted head. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...

And I really need to start making good pictures because I'm just too ...read more...

First thing to keep in mind is that there is a relevant specification regarding icon themes, the FreeDesktop.org Icon Theme Specification. Our implementation is intended to be compatible with this specification.

The basic idea of that spec is given a list of possible icon theme directory install locations (e.g. $XDG_DATA_DIRS, $KDEDIRS, etc.) and an icon theme (such as “Oxygen”), it gives definitions of how to install the icon theme metadata, including where it goes, what file names to use for the metadata, etc. It then defines how to use that icon theme metadata and a given icon name (such as “media-stop” or “dolphin”) to actually find an appropriate image to display to the user.

Lamarque Souza (lamarque or lvsouza): Plasma Network Management and ModemManager

System & Utilities Well, new update, this time I have implemented org.freedesktop.ModemManager.Modem and org.freedesktop.ModemManager.Modem.Gsm.Card interfaces from specification and added some information it provides to the interface details tab:

There is more information to add to interface details tab, I have not done it yet because of lack of time. The ModemManager patch is getting bigger (it touches or adds 86 files to trunk) and the Plasma NM patch adds/changes other 28 files. Managing all those files outside svn makes me loose time, but since trunk is closed for new features I will have to wait until KDE SC 4.5.0 is released.

Of course I will have to change interface details window, it becomes too big when all information is displayed. Maybe I will add a new "Hardware details" tab and move some things there. When I have more time I am going to implement selecting ...read more...
