Jos Poortvliet: Akademy 2010 started

System & Utilities Yay, sitting here in the big room listening to a MeeGo talk by Valtteri. He's not exactly the business type I expected, btw, he doesn't even wear a suit... For somebody who's a 'director' he looks rather normal ;-)

So yes, the trip was just fine - I expected to travel alone but ended up in the "Akademy flight". From NL to Helsinki we were with about 5 people, from Helsinky to Tampere the airplane had almost 50% Akademy visitors... Nice timing.

The party was great, and I enjoyed the 2-1 vs Brazil, but didn't get drunk as my belly decided to step in and tell me to go back to the hotel. I'm getting used to my lack of intelligence when it comes to handling my body... Eating almost nothing for a full day during the traveling, then having a few beers, then eating way to fast and too much. I do it every darn time...

And now I'm hungry as I didn't manage to find breakfast.

Luckily there will be lunch soonish and I ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): start your Akademy engines!

System & Utilities I arrived yesterday in Tampere, Finland for Akademy 2010. The travel went amazingly smoothly and I have even managed to my way around the town without much fuss. (I'm usually quite good at getting mildly lost in new cities, which I try and treat as an opportunity to discover things I wouldn't otherwise. :) Lots of KDE and F/OSS people are here already and the "day 0" hugs, visits, beer and food was excellent. My presentation slides are ready for tomorrow, though I want to go through my speaking notes one more time (and probably copy them over to fresh paper as they've become a bit of an edit-mess). So everything seems to be going very smoothly so far. I'm about to leave the hotel for the Uni where the first day of the conference proceedings will commend in ~90 minutes. The opening keynote talk is about MeeGo, and is being given by the Director of MeeGo Software in Nokia. I can't think of a better way to kick this whole thing off, and am really looking forward to the ...read more...

Diederik van der Boor: KMess at Akademy

System & Utilities

Last year I went to Akademy as single KMess developer. This year however, things have changed! Valerio and Sjors are also able to attend, making it the first year we meet in real life! It's quite odd to see people for the first time, while you've been working when them for a few years already. :-) However, this goes extremely well. Having the same passion for KDE really helps, and comfortably talking to the other people around you!

We also hope to get KMess in a better state this week then it currently is. At our hotelroom (TOAS, 5th floor), we have a A3 paper where we write down all little annoyances, and see if we can fix them.

On particular note, we'd love to make progress with a new MSNP2P-stack. This should improve the transfer of display pictures, file transfer and webcam support. It currently requires some discussion to get it right, and that's something we've avoided for quite a while. With the three of us at Akademy, I'm positive we ...read more...

Guillermo Amaral (gamaral): Berlin to Tampere

System & Utilities

Berlin

My visit to legendary city of Berlin was both fun and educational, specially while hanging out with the locals.

Main differences from other German cities I have visited.

  • A flock of bicyclists – So many in fact that they have a special lane in the side walk. They act more like biker gangs than bicyclists, they kept trying to run me over, and I’m sure one of them actually pointed at me before he sped up for the kill.

  • Pigs feet – I noticed a few places where public drinking was not just accepted but it was mandatory (j/k). It was indeed very fun to look at what drunken escapades of days past: A tree filled with shoes and underwear, a perfectly good set of pigs feet in the park, yes pigs feet… You don’t want to know -in fact I don’t want to know either-.

What I enjoyed best of all

  • Hanging out with my co-workers after hours – I rarely get to have this pleasure since most of us work remotely. I’m pretty ...read more...

Robin Burchell (w00t): Qt and Open Governance - it begins!

System & Utilities Just a short post to note that the promised infrastructure for Qt's open governance project is now live - go read Thiago's blogpost announcing this for more information.

This is something that concerns me quite a lot, and I'm extremely happy to see it move forward.

I would like to urge anyone interested to subscribe to the mailing list and help take part in the discussions over the coming weeks.

Rohan Prabhu (thirtySeven): [KWin Scripting] KWin|Pong: play your window

System & Utilities

EDIT: Sorry for the downtime, but the website is back up again :)

I apologize for the video looking very choppy.. but I couldn’t really help it. After I ran recordmydesktop, it just sucked my CPU into a blinding vortex. And that was after I used a polling interval of 160ms. Either ways, I have also added a video taken from my phone’s camera at the end of this video to show that the performance is actually not all that bad.

Till now whenever I had to test something done with KWin scripting, I just used to add a few little lines to the defaultscript that runs and then just check it out. As such, I was testing everything one thing at a time. I just wanted to write a bigger script, something that used a set of these implemented things to do something.. and what better symbol of nerdism than pong? So, I went ahead and wrote a pong game.. all done in QtScript. The video is for all to see, and a few ...read more...

Cornelius Schumacher: Akademy 2010

System & Utilities I'm on my way to Tampere for Akademy 2010. It's my seventh Akademy, not counting Kastle in 2003, the first KDE conference, which became the predecessor for all the Akademy events following afterwards. I'm especially looking forward to Akademy this year, because there are so many interesting topics to discuss, which could make a big difference for KDE in the future. So here are a couple of the things, which I'm particularly interested in this year:

Conference: The conference program is excellent as always. It's great that there is a strong mobile track. This is a still uderused potential for KDE, and I would love to see KDE expand much more in this area. Many years ago I wrote KOrganizer/Embedded which ran on a PDA, but I'm still waiting for the moment where I have a device running KDE software, which I actually want to have with me all the time.

BoFs: The BoF sessions are always a very important part of the Akademy experience. This is where actual ...read more...

Anne-Marie Mahfouf (annma): New Edu website

System & Utilities Following the KDE-Edu meeting at Randa in May, we decided to increase the communication with our users and to increase promotion of our software. One channel to do so is our website which we decided to port to the new KDE website style. We also decided to keep static webpages on http://edu.kde.org with minimum information and to use KDE wikis: http://userbase.kde.org for user-oriented information and http://techbase.kde.org for developer oriented information.
Yesterday the new KDE-Edu website went live. There is still improvement to do in the texts of course. I would like to warmly thank Matthias "pipesmoker" who did all the work on this new website. Without him coming back with his web skills, we would not have succeeded in having this new website. This is the magic of Free Software projects when people with the right skills come at the right moment! A big thank to Matthias who worked hard in hot days to make this happen before Akademy. Thanks also to the kde-www people who helped a lot!

Stephen Kelly (steveire): KBiAssociativeContainer. Erm, huh?

System & Utilities

What?

A while ago I wrote the KBiHash for encapsulating the content of two symmetrically updated QHash containers. The motivation for it was to be able to implement mapToSource and mapFromSource in proxy models sanely. By maintaining a mapping from parents in the source model to indexes in the proxy model, it was fairly clear how to map from one to the other.

It turns out it’s not so simple though. Sometimes I want a QHash on one side and a QMap on the other. I didn’t want to just copy, paste and replace QHash with QMap, so I made KBiHash even more generic to allow you to specify the associative container to use for each direction of the mapping.

That way, it is possible to use the same class to implement bi-directional QMap, bi-directional QHash, and QHash->QMap relations.

Why?

It turns out that mappings in proxy models are not always simple. If the purpose of the proxy is to change the structure of the model, there needs to be some way to quickly find the ...read more...

David Hubner (hubner): KInfoCenter 4.5 Edition

System & Utilities

First I would like to thank everyone for the UI feedback in the last post. I got a lot of good ideas from it.

KInfoCenter is all finished (well unless anyone finds bugs) so i thought i would list the new features that were included in the new rewrite. I shall also list where KInfoCenter is going from 4.5 to 4.6:

KInfoCenter 4.5:

- It’s now not a UniqueApplication, so you can run more than one instance. You cannot at the moment run the same KCM in multiple instances, that is planned for 4.6.

- The side menu is now a treeview, it gives it better organisation and allows me to put certain KCMs in certain categories.

- The about KCM is gone and replaced with a Summary KCM. There was no point in repeating the listing as it’s in the menu, the small information summaries have been moved to the default WhatsThis dialogs.

- The processor, partition, sound, devices KCM’s have been removed as they are now duplicate features in the new Device Viewer KCM

- Added Internationalisation to ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: ModemManager vs. modems

System & Utilities
The last days I worked on porting newer versions of ModemManager (MM) and NetworkManager (NM) to SLE11-SP1. Basically, the NM version from openSUSE 11.2 plus some patches and the latest MM release v0.4 are working now, but that's not the point of this posting.

It was the first time I touched the code of these tools. My expectation was that ModemManager should contain all modem related code and provide a DBus interface for NM to handle all the networking. The first issue I tested was using a mobile (GSM) via USB. It worked. Also UMTS/CDMA devices should work. But to my surprise ModemManager don't support plain modems (simple old and slow modems like a serial 56k modem) at all. Or did I miss something?

So why is this daemon called ModemManager if there is no modem support? It's all about WWAN devices and not modems. Not that this project is completely new, the first git commit is from July 2008.

If this should be a manager for modems, it should IMO support all ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Last minute preparations

System & Utilities

The old adage "if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it" applies, but nonetheless I felt the need to fix my laptop. It was cluttered with FSFE materials that I shouldn’t be carrying around, for one thing, and the Kubuntu 9.04 on it was decidedly long in the tooth. As prepwork for Akademy (o harbinger of doom!) I decided to clean it up: one Linux install, one OpenSolaris. This is an MSI 620GX laptop, which is a Centrino 2 based machine. Hardly exotic stuff.

For social reasons — as in, Sebas had recently written glowingly about it — I started off with OpenSUSE 11.2. Installs nicely (but with GPT by default, it seems?) and delivers a good-looking KDE4 desktop, plenty of apps. Compositing was enabled (GeForce9600M GT). Setting up a devel environment was a mild challenge. For various projects I use svn, git, mercurial and darcs, so getting those is a first priority. Darcs was a little harder to get, but there is a package available, which I downloaded and installed manually. It was in one of the repositories, but I ...read more...

Till Adam: older gentlemen

System & Utilities

It is quite normal, in Free Software initiatives, for people to come in, help out, become proficient, maybe even moderately famous, then eventually move on or drop out. Often life gets in the way, parenting, post entry level jobs and growing responsibilities reduce the available time something fierce and once one is no longer really familiar with the code base, it becomes hard to make an effective contribution in those short time and motivation windows that open up. Somewhat ironically, since a large part of my job revolves around KDEPIM, this is very true for me as well. Over the last two years or so, apart from lunch discussions over architectural issues with my colleagues, I've been able to do little more than ensure things build and work on OSX, my current main platform. Much to my delight, this has recently changed. After many years, our efforts to build and transition to the Akonadi platform are coming together lately. Although we've decided to delay by a month, relative to the normal KDE 4.5 release schedule, with KDEPIM, we are nearing ...read more...

Rohan Prabhu (thirtySeven): [KWin Scripting] A little profiling and a small debate

System & Utilities

In my previous post, I mentioned about caching and how it was implemented. While doing so, with the intention of providing a rationale for using such a system, I made a hypothesis saying that caching of objects would make things run faster with a smaller memory footprint. Well, such a conclusion was pretty intuitive, but a programmer cannot deem it conclusive till we have numbers supporting this hypothesis. So, with the QTime class in my toolkit, I made a very rudimentary setup that would measure the time taken to run the defaultscript. The ‘defaultscript’, as I would call it is the script that currently runs when KWin is launched with the –stest argument. It’s just a for-now provision for making development a little easier. The setup was:

if(sargs->isSet(\"stest\")) {
stestWindow = new ScriptTesting();
stestWindow->setEngine(&scripting);
QTime t;
t.start();
stestWindow->runDefault();
qDebug()<<\"~/.kwin/scripting/defaultscript executed in\"< }

For the given situation atleast, it provided a good enough benchmark. As for memory consumption and CPU, I just monitored System Activity using KSysGuard. Given below are the results:

Memory

The KDE e.V. membership has had the deference to let me in. It was communicated to me and other new members yesterday. I must say I've felt honoured to see the group I was accepted with (people like John Layt, whom I've interacted due to his work in KCurrency, and Sandro Andrade, whose blogs I've read on the planet). To me, it has been a rather lengthy process. or shall I say, at a moderate pace. I've started filling up the questionnaire in late December and I finished it end of May. Not bad for less than 10 questions, right? Not bad at all.

Jos Poortvliet: On Being Free pt 3

System & Utilities This is the second time I wrote this blog (wanted to publish before LinuxTag already) so I'll really try to keep it short. It is based on my talk on this subject at LinuxTag, which in turn was based on the earlier blogs about Being Free and discussions I had the night before the talk.

I'd like to refer to my earlier post where you can find links to earlier blogs.

Topics I'll go through:

  • Good and Bad sides of Being Free

  • 7 reasons why we're Free and What We Can Do

  • The Challenge

The Good and the Bad

So the way our community works as I described in my previous blogs has good and bad sides. Good is that we're the most innovative and fastest growing FOSS desktop community, having a lot of fun developing truly Free Software. But there is Bad. I've touched on that in my flameworthy LinuxTag blog (and I will come back to that topic in a future blog). The way we develop software ...read more...
