Ariya Hidayat: Box of Marbles meets Device Orientation

System & Utilities

Remember my Box of Marble demo?. It was a native Qt/C++ application running on Maemo-powered Nokia N900.

With the wave of DeviceOrientation Event Specification implementation, now it's possible to have the demo as a web app, running just inside the web browser. In fact, this is what you can see from this demo: ariya.github.com/js/marblebox.

Right now, it works with iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch running the new iOS 4.2, due to the brand new DeviceMotionEvent support. If you own a MacBook with accelerometer and you use Google Chrome, that works as well (tilt your laptop to see the gravity effect). But fear not, with the recent support to hook the acceleration data from Qt Mobilty to QtWebKit, don't be shocked if the next Nokia phone with built-in QtWebKit sports this feature as well.

While my previous demo uses Chipmunk physics engine, ...read more...

Vishesh Handa (vhanda): Nepomuk Backup

System & Utilities

Roughly 2 weeks ago, just before the feature freeze, the Nepomuk backupsync service was pushed into the trunk.

A long time ago I posted a lot of features about the ‘planned’ Nepomuk Backup service. I did land up implementing most of those features, but ultimately disabled some of them for a more stable backup experience. I thought it would be better to have a stable backup tool, without all the frills, compared to unstable tool which may potentially mess up your data.

So, without further ado I present Nepomuk Backup -

Nepomuk now provides automated backups.

The Nepomuk Backup GUI

The user interface can be invoked by the ‘nepomukbackup’ command, or can be called from the Nepomuk KCM.

DBus interface

The Backup GUI is completely independent ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): multihead saga continues

System & Utilities

I received no testing feedback from my last blog entry about multihead improvements for Plasma Desktop, which underscores the challenges we face with multihead support very nicely.

In any case, today I went through plasma-desktop and moved all the relevant code over to the new solution and committed all the changes to trunk. In theory this should improve plasma-desktop on multihead even further, with things like moving panels around with the mouse working as expected and what not.

Again: in theory, and I can't stress that enough. For those of us without multihead, the changes make zero difference as in the non-multihead case they are just small detours in the code that lead to the exact same calls that were being made previously, so there is quite literally no way of testing this beyond "Hey, it compiles, let's commit that." To know what the impacts are, we need people testing this.

These changes will not be a part of the 4.6beta1 release, but they should be part of beta2. Please install and test ...read more...

Aleix Pol (apol): KDE Memory game and MeeGo conference

System & Utilities

Hi!
As some of you know already, last week I was in Dublin trying to understand what MeeGo means (I got some conclusions, maybe some day I’ll share them). More importantly though, I also met a bunch of KDE hackers and we decided to start to work on some project together. I wanted to work on a KDE Memory game for a while and there I found some time to work on it, here there’s a demonstration about what we can do.

video source: http://proli.net/meu/los_otros/kmemory-presentation.ogv

If you’re interested on it and want to help get it in shape for the next KDE (now 4.7) release, here’s a list of what you can do:
- Think of a good name (yes, kmemory sounds fishy)
- Create a theme
- Create an icon
- Give ideas on how can we improve the theme specification (see kde.theme example in the git repository)
- Give ideas on what UI do we want (not how can it be improved, but what we want, it’s a ...read more...

Milian Wolff (milianw): Quanta compiles against KDevelop master again!

System & Utilities

Hey all,

another blog post today, I’m on fire :) This one is shorter though: I want to notify you all that Quanta compiles against KDevelop master again (i.e. what will become 4.2 and uses the MovingInterface from Kate).

If you are using KDevelop 4.1 and want to use one of the Quanta plugins, like XML or CSS language support or XDebug or Crossfire integration, checkout the 4.1 branch.

I hope to work more on Quanta again over the next days, hope I can finally get it into a usable state…

Bye!

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): Bye bye 64 hello 48.

System & Utilities
The size 64x64 took me more time that what I was originally expecting, not because they were particularly complex to make but simply because I was to busy with other more important KDE related things, with a new release of our desktop in its 4.6 incarnation coming out, we get extra amounts of work to do, plus given the relative success of the oxygen project all projects want to look good and request our assistance, so I end up juggling a lot of subprojects at the same time.

I'm not complaining or anything, its great, and very different from the way things used to be not so long ago, think this change is probably the greatest accomplishment of the oxygen project.

But getting back to the subject of this post, yes 240 icons later the size 64x64 is done and next (now) we will move on to size 48x48., so i think ...read more...

Ben Martin (monkeyiq): Foray into Qt Models with libferris

System & Utilities

Version 1.5.2 of libferris, released yesterday, includes both a QAbstractTableModel and QSortFilterProxyModel targeted at exposing libferris to the world of all things Qt. In libferris a great amount of information is exposed as virtual Extended Attributes for a file. As you can see in the below shot, the md5 as well as "ls -lh" size is available directly as attributes. Before you wonder, the md5 is only calculated on demand and is then cached relative to the mtime of the file.

Each file has thousands of attributes on my machine, these include tagging, geospatial information, extracted metadata, and RDF. In my GTK+2 model/view pair I allow the user to "sort" on a column but really have the view sort on another one. For example, as you see below, sorting on size-human-readable either means Qt or some class you provide needs to know how to properly sort on size strings like 14.2k etc. Instead ...read more...

Ingo Malchow (neverendingo): A Matter of Control: The State of Input Device Support in KDE

System & Utilities

Guest Post

If you look at the various changes from KDE 3 to KDE 4, two major trends emerge: unification and abstraction. Plasma, for example, unifies the various parts of the desktop and panel. Solid provides an abstraction layer that hides the details of device management from applications, while Phonon does the same for multimedia. Akonadi does both, providing a unified system for handling PIM data and creating an abstraction layer so PIM front-ends don't need to be concerned with the source or nature of the data they display. And of course the success of KDE 4 is not due solely to these trends, it is also due to developers sitting down and ironing out the current state of the tools in KDE, where they fail, where they work, where they should be, and how we can get them there.

Overall this strategy has proved to be wildly successful. Plasma is now working (at least partially) on everything from cell phones to ...read more...

Alex Merry: What Brave New World Is This?

System & Utilities

As most of you are probably aware, HAL is dead.  So let us all cry out: HAL is dead, long live… what, exactly?

If you’re wondering what on earth HAL is, it is (or was) a daemon that sat on your computer and told interested parties (such as KDE applications, via Solid) about various bits of the hardware.  This went beyond abstracting away kernel interfaces, however, and included information about laptop batteries that have been recalled, for example.

However, it was decided that HAL was getting too big for its boots and was failing to acheive its stated goal of “making hardware just work”.  But it was filling a need.  So what is sweeping into the void to replace it?

Well, there’s UPower, for all your power management needs.  It replaces those parts of HAL that dealt with screen brightness, the power button, the lid closing and entering various power-saving modes.  It even goes further than HAL ever did, allowing applications to request latency targets, for example.

Then there’s ...read more...

Sjors Gielen (Sjors/sgielen): NLUUG, KMess sprints and Telepathy

System & Utilities

Soooo… It’s been a while since I last appeared on the Planet. I’ve been having a lot of server trouble lately, not only on mine. As Murphy’s Law dictates: everything that can go wrong, will go wrong – well, in IT, there’s an added rule: everything will go wrong at the same time, the worst time.

Anyway, now that this blog is up again, there’s a few things I want to say. I’m trying to keep everything short so you won’t tl;dr on me. ;-)

NLUUG

Those of you in the Dutch mailinglist will probably have seen it: Adriaan wanted people to come represent KDE at the annual NLUUG conference, and while I was a bit hesitant at first, I decided to go anyway. I had a really good time, seeing a few KDE’ers again and chatting with random other people. At the KDE stand, I even showcased a Kubuntu 10.10 desktop, which made me feel a bit homesick since I’ve been using a Mac for a year now.

Sebastian K

System & Utilities

I’ve just returned from our local microbrewery, Brouwerij de Hemel in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, the place where I live after a nice dinner with my fellow KDE e.V. Board Member members. Friday and Saturday we had planned to hold a two+ day board meeting here in Nijmegen. Kim and me have moved into our new house in Nijmegen two weeks ago and we’re now mostly settled, meaning all critical parts of infrastructure work and are in place, and we can pick up our lives again, after two months of updating, maintaining and facelifting it from the inside. We’re now fully settled. We’ve moved inside Nijmegen from a rather nice flat into a larger house. We got the keys to the new house two months ago, and have spent this year’s september and october on painting, wallpapering, insulating and other facelift and maintainance work. Luckily, many of our friends and families came by to help us here and there. The whole process went pretty well overall, and we stayed inside our budget aswell with a result that’s really a nice improvement ...read more...

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): This post's are getting boring no?

System & Utilities

I come here I do a "dent" like post were I show something I have done, and the progress of the work, get some feedback, and we move on....

So in order to not brake the cycle I'm forced to show a couple of icons, here they are :)

Then I will make some comments on them like "this are 64x64 icons" Dohhh :)
Next I will say something like .... "made 95 of this icons".
And in the end leave a positive remark about the future "tomorrow I hope to do 50 more".

This would conclude my post.

I'm booooooring :D.

P.S. Its great fun to do the work and show its progress here, but I noticed that my last posts were kinda similar, sorry about that.... We are working on many different things for the 4.6 release. And I'm confident it will be our best one ever.

P.S.2 see I ...read more...

Mike McQuaid (mikemcquaid): The Social Network: A Defense of Programming

System & Utilities

I recently saw The Social Network, a dramatisation of the creation of Facebook. It was a thoroughly enjoyable film with brilliant direction, casting (Eisenberg and Timberlake in particular) and writing. It also had an incredibly realistic hacking seen (using wget and perl scripts) and featured KDE on the desktop of most of the programmers in the film. I highly recommend seeing it, regardless of your thoughts on Facebook.

A friend sent me a link to an interesting review that I was writing a long response to but thought I’d turn it into a blog post instead. The review is fantastically written by Zadie Smith but there’s a few glaring holes in it that frustrated this post into existence.

Smith, like many mainstream journalists and writers, seems to fundamentally understand what makes people like us excited about programming. I’ll respond to some choice quotes from the review.

“No doubt the filmmakers considered this option, but you can see their dilemma: how to convey the pleasure of programming—if such a pleasure exists—in a way that is ...read more...

Richard Johnson (nixternal): Device and Kernel Level Hacker Required

System & Utilities

My buddy Curtis is at it again with his awesome company, Bluecherry. For those of you who don’t know what Bluecherry is, a quick introduction. Bluecherry is a US based company out of the sticks in Missouri. They specialize in creating high quality Linux supported video capture cards as well as surveillance software. Those of you who work in a tight-security data center might be familiar with the Windows surveillance systems that out there, since more than likely you are hosting those servers as well. Well Bluecherry lightens the load by supplying the same type of equipment, just in a Linux environment.

Well Curtis hit me up on IRC this evening, and it seems my previous post where he was looking for a Qt dev worked out well for him. He asked me again to help out, and of course I am more than happy. Seems I am doing better at getting other people employed than I am with getting myself employed. Oh well.

This time around they are looking for someone who can ...read more...

Ben Martin (monkeyiq): Clawmotia and QML: Moving the TV

System & Utilities

Some may know that Clawmotia is my MythTV remote control which started back in the n810 days. For a bit of fun while recovering from jet lag I decided to port Clawmotia over to using QML and take advantage of some of the n900's capabilities such as the accelerometer. Shown below is controlling the playback speed by moving the device. Apologies for the flicking video, it seems mythtv doesn't like the mov file in software playback much, but the Bunny is free to use so he made the audition.

Controlling MythTV with an n900 accelerometer from Ben Martin on Vimeo.

The normal functions from the older qedje remote are also available on the main page shown in the video below. I have now put the cursor keys into a submenu which is opened by both the joystick and menu buttons, the latter first getting mythtv to open the menu and then changing the remote configuration to show the cursor key submenu. This explains the vacant positions in the grid ...read more...

Juan Luis Baptiste (Maeztro): KDE 4.5.3 available for Mandriva 2010 !!

System & Utilities
mikala has done KDE 4.5.3 packages for Mandriva 2010 Spring, thank you !! this time (or at least for now) the packages aren't available in KDE FTP as usual but in Mandriva Italia Backports (MIB) FTP. Packages for both i586 and x86_64 are available. Here are the upgrade instructions:

First, if you have added the repositories for any previous version, remove them with the following command:

urpmi.removemedia kde-4.5.2

or whatever name you gave to the repository. Second, add the KDE 4.5.3 repository. For 32 bit systems use the following urpmi command (as root):

urpmi.addmedia --update KDE453 http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/others/kde/4.5.3/64/

For 64 bits systems use the following urpmi command (as root):

urpmi.addmedia --update KDE453 http://mib.pianetalinux.org/MIB/2010.1/others/kde/4.5.3/32/

Then update the repositories and download all the packages before actually installing them to make sure that the installation is possible (as root):

urpmi --auto-update --auto-select --test

When all packages finish downloading and you see a message at the end saying that the installation is possible, you can now run the same command without the --test ...read more...

Milian Wolff (milianw): Massif Visualizer 0.2 released

System & Utilities

Hey all!

I’m happy to release Massif Visualizer v0.2. This is mainly a “fix the build-system” release, no new features have been added.

You can download it here: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=122409

Mac Support

Thanks to the reports by Chris Jones it’s now possible to build and use Massif Visualizer on Max OS X, see e.g.:

http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/~jonesc/massif-visualizer-OSX-1.png
http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/~jonesc/massif-visualizer-OSX-2.png

He has also submitted the portsfile for inclusion in Macports: https://trac.macports.org/ticket/27168

KGraphViewer now optional

I’ve made the KGraphViewer dependency optional, if anyone does not want it (even though this removes like 50% of the tools features).

KDE Infrastructure

I’ve also prepared the steps for moving Massif-Visualizer into KDE Extragear and asked kde-devel for review. I already use the KDE infrastructure now:

Website: https://projects.kde.org/projects/playground/sdk/massif-visualizer Git: git clone git://git.kde.org/massif-visualizer Bug tracker: https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=massif-visualizer&format=guided Mailing List: https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/massif-visualizer massif-visualizer@kde.org

This also means that I’ll shortly get translations by the awesome KDE-i18n-Team, so stay tuned for a 0.3 including translations!

I’ve also spent quite some time today ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: the fun of remote JavaScript debugging

System & Utilities

Remote feature of Web Inspector, whereby you use an instance of WebKit and debug another one in different machine, is one important feature (that is being worked on) of WebKit I can't wait to start using. Till that day, remote debugging is always a challenge. There are of course assorted workarounds out there. At Sencha we decide to have and share with you a little tool that helps JavaScript remote debugging. It is available in two flavors: GUI-based (using Qt obviously) and Python-based for scripts and automation. Right now, the target is Android WebKit but there is no reason why we should not march to other platforms as well (e.g. QtWebKit on Symbian and MeeGo). Get it while it's hot!

Sandro Andrade (sandroandrade): 3rd Forum KDE Brazil: going country-wide

System & Utilities

Hello everyone,

It’s been awhile since last post. I’ve been really bogged down in recent weeks in light of my Ph.D. research, but I can’t stay long without gearing my head. This year has been quite fruitful for KDE Brazil in terms of consolidating our five local groups and having them starting their own efforts to show off all the beauty and glory of KDE (hehe). Aleix Pol (apol): Kamoso in git.kde.org

System & Utilities

Hi,
Today (yesterday already) has been an intense day for Kamoso, I met with Alex and we rearranged our ideas regarding the project, more information will come.

Another big step on the project and the reason for this post is that we’re moving away from gitorious in favor of git.kde.org.
From now on, if you want to give it a try, just run:
git clone git@git.kde.org:kamoso as described in here.

Thanks to the KDE Sysadmin team and long life to Kamoso! :)
