Is KDE the Answer?

System & Utilities

I see two problems: is looking like MS Windows good or bad, and is KDE a better answer than GNOME? Let's look at these one at a time.

Mario Fux (unormal): Serious games, KDE and Co

System & Utilities

The half vegatarian half carnivore pizza is in the oven and before the TV show about some Wikileaks background story starts I’ve some minutes to start writing my blog entry about "serious games", a very interesting presentation I visited yesterday, and some other KDE stuff.

As it’s part of my job to sometimes record guest presentations at or of our institute (of education) yesterday I had the possibility to visit a presentation about "serious games". The presenter was a former teacher of mine (now professor) who taught me a lot about education and media. "Serious games" is a concept about computer games with an educational and teaching background. The audience consisted almost exclusively of women (female human beings are the majority in the educational sciences and business in Switzerland). Unfortunately the prejudices about the anti-social character of gamers and a causal relation between players of violent games and violent acts are still alive. This even though there is no study which underpins these ideas and some studies exist that show even the opposite of ...read more...

kunal ghosh (kunalghosh): Searching , Google Vs Facebook

System & Utilities

After having watched Mark Zuckerberg’s two part interview on youtube, i was wondering what would, searching the same thing ( “seagate Goflex” )

on both the platforms (facebook and Google) would result in.

side by side, the search term on google , facebook , bing (apparently facebook has some tie-up with M$)

google fb Screenshot

OK , some of my observations ( please do share your observations too ! ) :

1. Google is good with Factual data.

2. Facebook has an added advantage with it knowing what my friends , other facebook users’ and i like . And how many of the users’ like / dislike / have

commented on the topic i am searching.

For the factual data , its using Bing (M$ ‘s search engine).

3. Bing is a reasonable search engine, i have nothing ...read more...

Sven Langkamp (slangkamp): Vector graphic file import for Krita

System & Utilities

For quite some time Krita supports shape layers now. It’s quite surprising that many users are use the vector features even though they are not as powerful as in pure vector graphics programs. Probably one of the biggest problem in the 2.3 and before was inserting vector graphics.

While inserting primitive shapes is very easy, inserting complex vector graphics was rather difficult. There were two ways to insert them, you could either open a file with the file dialog and it would get rasterized or you could copy and paste it from Karbon. After Kubuntiac brought up the wish to have better SVG support, I took over and added the new import filter.

The actual filter turned out to be really small as it just needs to open the file and find out which shape should go to which layer as the rest is done by flake. The filter at can load ODG files. After some fixes from Cyrille the filter can now also load SVG files ...read more...

Andrew Lake (Jamboarder): User Interface Considerations for the Small Independent Developer

System & Utilities

I’ve been a fan of design for as long as I can remember.  I’ve always been fascinated about why designs “feel” good.  Whether it’s a car, architecture or a piece of software, certain designs are a pleasure to look at and interact with and I’ve always been curious about why they work.  Over the past few years, I’ve been developing more and more software (Bangarang mostly lately) and my fascination with interface design hasn’t diminished.

However, for something that is essentially a hobby, I’ve often found it difficult to find UI design guidance that doesn’t often feel crippling to small hobby developers like myself.  It is probably no terrible surprise that much of the UI designs produced by us small hobby developers can sometimes be, well… not as great as we would like.  In many cases, it is not for lack of trying.  My view is that so much of the UI guidance available can be so overwhelming and inaccessible to small hobby developers that it often feels like there’s nothing you can do, especially at design-time, without a team ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): dealing with Microsoft Exchange, when you really want to use SMTP

System & Utilities

I've been doing some work on OpenChange, including parsing RFC2822 format messages into Exchange RPC properties. One of the test tools I have can parse up some kinds of RFC2822 / MIME messages (plain text, HTML, some mime/alternative and text/calendar) and upload the results to a Microsoft Exchange server as a particular user.

With a little bit of unix-style tool combination, you can plug this into something like Postfix. So if you're in a situation where you want to integrate a tool that wants to send mail via SMTP, but your network is pretty much "Exchange." (and you can't send SMTP directly), then this might be useful.

When using Postfix, you'd add a transport entry, either a wildcard:

* oc:localhost

or a restricted list if you like.

Enable the transport mapping in main.cf:

transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport

Then add an entry to master.cf to match the required transport:

oc unix - n n - 1 pipe
flags= user=bradh argv=/path/to/script.sh

where the script receives the mail, and invokes the oxcmail_test application:

#!/bin/sh

Andrea Scarpino (bash): The Calligra Suite

System & Utilities

Yesterday the KDE community has announced the Calligra Suite, a replacement for KOffice.

Starting from KOffice’s PKGBUILD, I made a PKGBUILD for this project. Unfortunately AUR yet do not support splitted PKGBUILDs (and I’m too lazy to split every package function in a new PKGBUILD), so I uploaded my PKGBUILD here. The source tarball is here.
Give it a try, it’s a git version anyway.
Cheers

Cornelius Schumacher: A week in the life of a KDE e.V. board member

System & Utilities

Did you ever want to know how life as a KDE e.V. board member is? From the questions I get I know that at least some of you do. So here you go. I took some notes last week to give you a brief impression of what I did in my role as board member of KDE e.V.

Saturday

Domains. As legal representative of the KDE community, KDE e.V. owns most of the central KDE domains, most prominently of course kde.org, but also a couple of other domains like the main KDE domains in some countries. This comes with a certain amount of administrative work, such as domain transfers and a bit of technical administration like updating of name servers. Today the domain of our wonderful Indian community needed some care. This also triggered a discussion with the sysadmin team and we came up with a way to simplify the domain handling by delegating the name server administration. Will make things easier in the future.

Diplomacy. The board of KDE e.V. is ...read more...

Frank Karlitschek (karli): The Open-PC starts not with one or two but with three models and partners

System & Utilities

Today is the big day. The sale of the Open-PC starts. The first PC which is build by the free software community and not by a big company. Everybody can contribute. The Open-PC is using only free software and drivers.
The good news is that we are not starting with one or two but with three manufacturing partners and models. We are working together with ARLT and greeniX in Germany and ThinkPenguin in the US and we are looking for more partners in other countries.

So what is special about the Open-PC?
  • Hardware and Software is selected by the Linux Community
  • The PC is preconfigured and easy to use by everybody
  • Telephone and Email support is included
  • Only free software is used, including the drivers
  • Only fully documented hardware is used
  • There are different manufacturers who build and sell the Open-PCs
  • A part of the price is a donation to KDE
  • Everything, including the software, is developed in the open. Everybody can contribute.

Boudewijn Rempt's Krita blog: Very Nearly Release Candidate Time!

System & Utilities

Towards the First Release Candidate (inches at a time)

You might be feeling that we're twiddling our thumbs in the Krita community -- but nothing could be less true! The last bugs to fix, the last tests to fix before a release (we don't have any unittest failures anymore!), especially an important release like tend to be tricky and time-consuming. Of course, there are also real-life issues that make people busier than usual. Work, a new job, the renaming of the KOffice project, school and university -- all that stuff can't be ignored forever.

Still, it's time for an update.

Next week we hope to release the first release candidate of Krita 2.3. This is the big one, the one that you need to test. Because if nobody tests it, nobody will find the last few bugs and we will release another abst&uumlrzfreudig Krita. I would prefer a hundred bugs found that make us postpone the release to January to a release on time, with a hundred bugs found once Krita appears in distribution's repositories.

And right now we need ...read more...

Jeff Mitchell (jefferai): KDE Git: Three servers, better commit URLs

System & Utilities

Two quick updates on Git stuff:

First, we now have three anongit servers in rotation. We could probably make do with 0.25 of a single anongit server at the current load, but that will change quickly once kdelibs and co switch over from SVN, so it’s good to be ready.

Second, the generated commit URLs will always be given with the full commit hash, but the commit resolver now supports using partial hashes in case you want to shorten it yourself. For instance, you could manually change the commit URL http://commits.kde.org/amarok/cf17de39f9021064a713db965487be6e3d75a186 to http://commits.kde.org/amarok/cf17de39 to give out a shorter URL.

That’s all; if you were in the States I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. :-)

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Kubuntu Web Shortcuts

System & Utilities

In this post I would like to put the spotlight on a very nice Kubuntu feature that will help you a great deal if you regularly work with Ubuntu project services (such as the wiki) or Launchpad.

Kubuntu has this very nice package called kubuntu-konqueror-shortcuts. While I actually would like to have that renamed to something more suitable, I (or rather my minion ;) ) did not yet get to rename it. Anyhow…

The shortcuts package was started in 2005 and is a collection of KDE web shortcuts related to Kubuntu and the Ubuntu project. Web shortcuts are one of the most used KDE features on my system. It allows you to enter things like “gg:kubuntu” in your browser’s URL bar to do a Google search on Kubuntu, or “kde:krecentdocuments” to lookup KDE API documentation. The nice thing about this is that it works in both Konqueror and Rekonq, as well as KickOff (the application menu) and KRunner (the thing that appears when you press ALT+F2 – actually it only works here if you ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: Box of Marbles meets Device Orientation

System & Utilities

Remember my Box of Marble demo?. It was a native Qt/C++ application running on Maemo-powered Nokia N900.

With the wave of DeviceOrientation Event Specification implementation, now it's possible to have the demo as a web app, running just inside the web browser. In fact, this is what you can see from this demo: ariya.github.com/js/marblebox.

Right now, it works with iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch running the new iOS 4.2, due to the brand new DeviceMotionEvent support. If you own a MacBook with accelerometer and you use Google Chrome, that works as well (tilt your laptop to see the gravity effect). But fear not, with the recent support to hook the acceleration data from Qt Mobilty to QtWebKit, don't be shocked if the next Nokia phone with built-in QtWebKit sports this feature as well.

While my previous demo uses Chipmunk physics engine, ...read more...

Vishesh Handa (vhanda): Nepomuk Backup

System & Utilities

Roughly 2 weeks ago, just before the feature freeze, the Nepomuk backupsync service was pushed into the trunk.

A long time ago I posted a lot of features about the ‘planned’ Nepomuk Backup service. I did land up implementing most of those features, but ultimately disabled some of them for a more stable backup experience. I thought it would be better to have a stable backup tool, without all the frills, compared to unstable tool which may potentially mess up your data.

So, without further ado I present Nepomuk Backup -

Nepomuk now provides automated backups.
