Here the top 10 of blog entries visited in 2010 in my blog:
10 - Poppler, Qt4, Windows and my desktop
9 - Performance of radeon free drivers
8 - Is the X11 engine slower than raster just because of the drivers?
7 - Morocco trip
6 - 3g USB dongle stopped working in Ubuntu 10.04

One can extract several interesting things from this list:
- Last year i did not make interesting blogs, 6 out of 10 are from either 2006 or 2007 or 2009 (but not from 2008 :D)
- People seem interested in my poppler-symbian project. It did not get very far but there's a proof-of-concept at http://projects.ufocoders.com/projects/pdfviewer/repository in case you are interested ...read more...

Ingo Malchow (neverendingo): News from KDE www: pastebin

System & Utilities

After a long year of changes in the kde-www land, ranging from looks to scm switches, a final last coup:

KDE is running its own pastebin service now!

What's special about it, you might want to ask. Several things.
- It is entirely written by our crazy fellow team member Sayak "did i mess up the code again" Banerjee, we have the control over the source, soon to go into git.kde.org
- It is completely ad free (my personal favourite reason for using it)
- It provides the look of the upcoming new kde www look already now, it's called Chihuahua 2.0

But let's a bit into the features.
- You can post code snippets, texts, and use syntax highlighting for a nice eye friendly code review.
- You can password protect your code snippets
- You can review previously entered code snippets
- Use RSS notification to get aware of new posts (makes it possible to integrate with an irc bot)

More interesting features are:
- Use the API to post your snippets

Aurelien Gateau: Common user interface mistakes in KDE applications, part 2: Dialog layouts

System & Utilities

Too much borders

It is not uncommon to find dialogs which contains tabs, which themselves contain groups, which contain other groups. That’s quite a lot of borders… Not only does it look crowded, it also eats valuable content space. There are a few easy tricks you can use to avoid this issue.

  • Maybe you can use fixed-height spacers and labels to replace some of your group boxes, especially if your group box is the only element in the dialog.
  • If you use a QTabWidget (or its KDE descendant, KTabWidget), try setting the “documentMode” property to true. When this property is set, the tab widget does not draw a border around its content, it only draws the top bar. Here is a before/after screenshot of KMix to illustrate:

Double margins

This problem seems to be less common lately, but I still encounter it regularly, especially in configuration dialogs. The bookmark editor demonstrates this problem quite well:

Camila Ayres (camilasan): The longest semester I’ve ever had.

System & Utilities

After a loooong semester…with very good news and very bad news too, I think I survived (again), and here I am to try to tell you in a few words what I’ve been doing.

In november, KDE Brazil was present at VII Latino American Conference of Free Software, where I gave a talk: “KDE needs you: how to start to contribute” – you can see pictures here.  Just a few days before Latinoware started, in some KDE e-mail lists I asked for specific suggestions where the people can start to help. And some people suggested intersting links for newbies to check out and pick something to do for KDE:

Besides that, Aracele and me are putting some efforts into translation KDE Techbase and Userbase into Portuguese. So we already translated some ...read more...

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): The Phonon Family is Moving and Splitting

System & Utilities

Today the Phonon family (Phonon, Phonon-VLC, Phonon-MPlayer) moved from Git to Git ;)

Long ago Phonon was living together with KDE supporting technologies in KDE SVN’s. At some point moving to Git was desired and so we moved to Gitorious, a free software for hosting Git. Now that KDE is rolling out its new infrastructure with Git at the center, we think that it is time to get back to our roots. This not because we are unhappy with Gitorious, but our wish is to stay as close to KDE as possible.

Additionally we have moved all Phonon backends into separate repositories. This permits faster development and releases independent from Phonon itself.

So, from a user perspective nothing will change (other than maybe getting a phonon-backend-gstreamer update some time soon ;) ). If you are however contributing, or want to contribute in the future there are some things to know.

Frerich Raabe: ccache for MSVC

System & Utilities

I’ve been a happy ccache user for years. It’s a great tool for avoiding unneeded recompilation by reusing previously cached results - thus speeding up builds quite substantially. Unfortunately, it only works for gcc; there is a ccache patch for MSVC around but it never quite worked for me.

Hence, I decided to write a program which works just like ccache except that it can be used with MSVC. It’s a Python script which is meant to be used as a drop-in replacement for the cl.exe program.

The script basically generates a hash sum out of

  • The compilers file size and modification time
  • The complete preprocessed source code
  • The command line

After computing the hash sum, the cache is checked for whether an this hash sum was used previously. If so, the previously generated object file (and the compiler output) are re-used instead of invoking the actual compiler. This can save quite some time.

The program (as well as a bit more documentation) can be found at github.com:

Allen Winter: KDEPIM 4.6 Beta3

System & Utilities

Today KDEPIM 4.6 Beta3 is tagged and released.

This is the first release in our departure from the normal KDE SC 4.6 cycle, but you should be able to build against kdelibs and kdepimlibs from either the beta2 or the upcoming first release candidate.

Note that it does require the 1.4.90 Akonadi server which was just released yesterday.

Once the mirrors catch-up you should find the source code in ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/unstable/kdepim.

We'll re-evaluate our progress (based on your constructive feedback) in a week or so and decide on our next release -- on our way to KDEPIM 4.6.

Paul Adams: One Groupware, Four Platforms

System & Utilities

So most of my life these days is taken up by…

Every now and then I get asked how I ended up involved with Kolab when I was already so involved with KDE. It has yet to be a surprise to anyone to find out that it is because of my dedication to KDE that I became involved with Kolab.

One of the things I love about Kolab is the use of Kontact as the primary client. For many reasons we call it the smart client at Kolab Systems. Kontact in its latest, fully Akonadified form is important because it brings the full Kolab experience both online and offline. It gives you all your “stuff”, now.

There is something else quite spiffy about Kontact:

Richard Dale: Codethink is hiring!

System & Utilities

Alberto Ruiz asked me to post a message on Planet KDE about Codethink is hiring! He says:

"Codethink is currently looking for bright university graduates looking into joining a young open source company. As you may know already Codethink is an Open Source consultancy focused on helping our customers to make the most out of open source and create great innovative products with it.

The work environment is really flexible and we have a great team of hackers. Our projects cover the whole desktop, mobile and embedded Linux stack. We are particularly looking for people with some involvement in open source (few contributions GSoC...) and an interest in getting involved in low level kernel and graphics development, but if you are focused on other areas that you think might be interesting don’t hesitate "

I actually work for 'Codethink Spain' and I'm not based in Manchester. But I can confirm that the company does have some serious hackers working for them, and that being 'Qt/KDE centric' or 'GTK/Gnome centric' isn't much of an issue. It is a ...read more...

Raphael Kubo da Costa (rakuco): Updates to freebsd.kde.org

System & Utilities

A few days ago, Alberto Villa committed some changes to the KDE on FreeBSD website: it is now using the Chihuaha framework, which means it looks a lot more like the rest of the kde.org websites. As noted in the commit message, many thanks to the KDE on Windows webmasters, since Alberto originally got the code from their website.

As for myself, I've recently started playing with the KDE conversion to git. The kdeutils conversion rules are shaping up nicely, thanks to the #kde-git folks who've been kind enough to always answer my questions. To get my feet wet, I decided to try converting the KDE on FreeBSD repository from SVN to git, since its history is much smaller and simpler than kdeutils'.

So after spending a few minutes writing the conversion rules and waiting for some feedback from the other KDE on FreeBSD guys, I filed a sysadmin bug report to start the conversion.

Thanks to toma and neverendingo, things went pretty smoothly, and ...read more...

Robert Riemann (saLOUt): Announcing Kubeplayer (youtube w/o flash)

System & Utilities

Hello Planet KDE, hello RubyCorner

Earlier this year I started writing a KDE application using the Ruby programming language. Coming from the web development, I am no expert at all in C++. So I decided to give KDE development a try using the Ruby bindings for KDE 4 called korundum4.

It wasn’t as easy as expected. Unfortunatly the korundum4 project didn’t got very popular by now, so I found a lot of bugs on the way. Now, three months later, all the bugfixes are included in the last stable KDE. The idea, of just copying the project folder and starting the app without the need of any further setup1, becomes finally true.

Announcing Kubeplayer

Screenshot of Kubeplayer I started a kind of clone of the well known Qt-based Youtube player ...read more...

Hans Chen (Mogger): What has happened to the Dot, the KDE Forums and the KDE wikis?

System & Utilities

Some of you might see a message if you visit dot.kde.org, forum.kde.org or try to edit a page in one of the KDE wikis and wonder what it’s all about. There’s no need to worry though, everything is proceeding fine.

The sites are being moved to a new server, and it might take some time for your ISP to update their DNS (up to 72 hours). If you see the message, it means that you still try to access the old server. To avoid losing content, the forums etc. have been disabled until the DNS propagation is complete.

Mario Fux (unormal): Serious games, KDE and Co

System & Utilities

The half vegatarian half carnivore pizza is in the oven and before the TV show about some Wikileaks background story starts I’ve some minutes to start writing my blog entry about "serious games", a very interesting presentation I visited yesterday, and some other KDE stuff.

As it’s part of my job to sometimes record guest presentations at or of our institute (of education) yesterday I had the possibility to visit a presentation about "serious games". The presenter was a former teacher of mine (now professor) who taught me a lot about education and media. "Serious games" is a concept about computer games with an educational and teaching background. The audience consisted almost exclusively of women (female human beings are the majority in the educational sciences and business in Switzerland). Unfortunately the prejudices about the anti-social character of gamers and a causal relation between players of violent games and violent acts are still alive. This even though there is no study which underpins these ideas and some studies exist that show even the opposite of ...read more...

System & Utilities

After having watched Mark Zuckerberg’s two part interview on youtube, i was wondering what would, searching the same thing ( “seagate Goflex” )

side by side, the search term on google , facebook , bing (apparently facebook has some tie-up with M$)

OK , some of my observations ( please do share your observations too ! ) :

1. Google is good with Factual data.

2. Facebook has an added advantage with it knowing what my friends , other facebook users’ and i like . And how many of the users’ like / dislike / have

commented on the topic i am searching.

For the factual data , its using Bing (M$ ‘s search engine).

Sven Langkamp (slangkamp): Vector graphic file import for Krita

System & Utilities

For quite some time Krita supports shape layers now. It’s quite surprising that many users are use the vector features even though they are not as powerful as in pure vector graphics programs. Probably one of the biggest problem in the 2.3 and before was inserting vector graphics.

While inserting primitive shapes is very easy, inserting complex vector graphics was rather difficult. There were two ways to insert them, you could either open a file with the file dialog and it would get rasterized or you could copy and paste it from Karbon. After Kubuntiac brought up the wish to have better SVG support, I took over and added the new import filter.

The actual filter turned out to be really small as it just needs to open the file and find out which shape should go to which layer as the rest is done by flake. The filter at can load ODG files. After some fixes from Cyrille the filter can now also load SVG files ...read more...

Andrew Lake (Jamboarder): User Interface Considerations for the Small Independent Developer

System & Utilities

I’ve been a fan of design for as long as I can remember.  I’ve always been fascinated about why designs “feel” good.  Whether it’s a car, architecture or a piece of software, certain designs are a pleasure to look at and interact with and I’ve always been curious about why they work.  Over the past few years, I’ve been developing more and more software (Bangarang mostly lately) and my fascination with interface design hasn’t diminished.

However, for something that is essentially a hobby, I’ve often found it difficult to find UI design guidance that doesn’t often feel crippling to small hobby developers like myself.  It is probably no terrible surprise that much of the UI designs produced by us small hobby developers can sometimes be, well… not as great as we would like.  In many cases, it is not for lack of trying.  My view is that so much of the UI guidance available can be so overwhelming and inaccessible to small hobby developers that it often feels like there’s nothing you can do, especially at design-time, without a team ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): dealing with Microsoft Exchange, when you really want to use SMTP

System & Utilities

I've been doing some work on OpenChange, including parsing RFC2822 format messages into Exchange RPC properties. One of the test tools I have can parse up some kinds of RFC2822 / MIME messages (plain text, HTML, some mime/alternative and text/calendar) and upload the results to a Microsoft Exchange server as a particular user.

With a little bit of unix-style tool combination, you can plug this into something like Postfix. So if you're in a situation where you want to integrate a tool that wants to send mail via SMTP, but your network is pretty much "Exchange." (and you can't send SMTP directly), then this might be useful.

When using Postfix, you'd add a transport entry, either a wildcard:

* oc:localhost

or a restricted list if you like.

Enable the transport mapping in main.cf:

transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport

Then add an entry to master.cf to match the required transport:

oc unix - n n - 1 pipe
flags= user=bradh argv=/path/to/script.sh

where the script receives the mail, and invokes the oxcmail_test application:

#!/bin/sh
