Editor's Note: Replacing KDE4

System & Utilities

Yes, I am one of those grumpy KDE 3.x fans who can't deal with KDE4. So I've been trying out different desktop environments and window managers to replace my beloved KDE, and it has been fun and enlightening.

Qt in education

System & Utilities

I came across a really nice blog entry by Hanne Linaae entitled Teach Qt!. That led me to the Qt course materials and I grabbed a few of the course material sets.

When I settled in to look at the first one I was very pleased to see three things:

  • They are creative commons licensed, allowing for broad usage

  • There are PDFs and PowerPoint formats, yes ... but there is also an ODF version in there

  • KDE is mentioned a few times, including getting its own slide in the intro slide deck with a pointer to Techbase

The course materials look really good and the approach seems solid. Nice work Qt people! :) The more educational materials and documentation we can have around the Qt and KDE ecosystem the better.

Slicing up the Web

System & Utilities

The Webslice applet has been in Plasma (kdeplasma-addons, to be precise) since 4.4 already. It allows the user to display a part of a webpage on the desktop. This can be useful for monitoring only a specific part of a webpage, or just to display something nice.

The Webslice applet has been written by Richard Moore and me as a functional prototype, but didn’t see much love since it was added to Plasma for 4.4 in 2009. Its basic mechanism is that you specify a “slice” within a website, which is a rectangular region. This region then gets shown in the applet, and resizes dynamically with it, zooming the “slice” in and out. The widget basically worked, but had two significant problems: Resizing was very sluggish and bound to a kept aspect ratio, and you needed to know CSS2 selector syntax to actually use it.

Earlier tonight, I’ve committed a set of changes which address these problems, and backported them after review on the plasma-devel mailing list to the 4.6 branch, so these changes become part of Plasma 4.6.1, which ...read more...

KDE 4.6.0 Released

System & Utilities

Before we get underway: I'm sorry, we don't have enough headline space to write 'KDE Releases Development Platform, Applications and Plasma Workspaces 4.6.0'. Then again, do any non-anal people every refer to it that way? No? I thought so.

collaboration at openSUSE

System & Utilities

A few days ago I posted about Canonical's decision to start shipping Qt with Ubuntu but do it in a not-exactly-cooperative way. Aaron replied to my post that he had contacted Mark who simply forwarded him to the Kubuntu developers. Mark either didn't get the point Aaron tried to make or didn't like it - either way, too bad.

Collaboration news!

Luckily, at the cross-distro app installer meeting openSUSE organized, Ubuntu had two people over and it was even decided to use the Ubuntu Software center as reference for other distributions. Good to see Canonical seems open for collaboration - at least to some extend. After that meeting the Bretzn team worked for three days on an openSUSE appstore - count on an article about that soon! Hint: pretty awesome results in the pipeline and patches are already flowing in, implementing the ideas, plans and mockups from the meeting. I must say I'm really happy with those meetings and look forward to see what openSUSE will be doing over the next months ...read more...

Amarok Insider 16, brought to you by Google Code-in Students!

System & Utilities

Galah in flight II

The latest Amarok Insider, just published at http://amarok.kde.org, features the writing of seven Google Code-In students, writing nine different articles, ranging from an interview with developer Bart Cerneels, to "How To install a new script in Amarok." Besides the mentors, students were able to get assistance and encouragement in their tasks and research from Amarok developers and users in the #amarok IRC channel on Freenode, which is what makes these articles of
such high quality.

Amarok Insider featured articles: What's New in Amarok, Google and Amarok, Roktober Success, Interview with a Developer: Bart Cerneels, Automated Playlist Generator: How to Use it, Queue Manager in Amarok, Installing and using a script in Amarok, Amarok on Windows, Transcode
your media files, Amarok Live CD.

Google Code-In was a huge success for Amarok, and it's great to celebrate the Amarok 2.4 release with this Insider almost completely written by our students!

Choosing a project for Hackweek 6

System & Utilities

It's Hackweek again in SUSE land for the next five days. It's the sixth edition and there already is a nice list of projects in openFATE.

I haven't decided, what I'll work on, yet. There are four projects I'm thinking about. I entered all of them in openFATE for now, will sleep for a night, and then take a decision tomorrow morning, when I'll start hacking. If you have input, preferences, what you would like to see happen, or if you would like to join me in one of these projects, please let me know.

These are the projects I have in mind:

Developer sprint support tool

We have discussed this a couple of times in the KDE community, as there are happening a lot of sprints there, and it would be great to have a tool, which supports taking care of the administrative aspects, helps with ...read more...

Request to Linux distributions

System & Utilities

Do not waste my hard disk!

I recently acquired an 2 TB hard disk drive, which I immediately formatted with ext4. Given that mkfs.ext4 defaults to 5% reserved blocks for too, that amounts to 100 GB of lost* space.

Wow. 100 GB. On a desktop machine. For root.

While mkfs belongs to e2fsprogs, I think this requires action on the distributions side. Let me explain.

If you are installing a server, 5% makes perfect sense: there are a lot of logfiles, updates, potential break-ins and other disasters-to-happen for which root-reserved space will be preciously required. 5% is a good choice here. If 5% is too much (or too little), it will not matter: any decent sysadmin knows mkfs.ext4 -m and tune2fs -m (if you don’t, Martin will teach you).

On the other hand, if you are installing Ubuntu on your laptop, you probably don’t know shit about mkfs, tune2fs, 5%, etc. You only know by removing Windows and installing Linux you’ve magically lost 100GB of space. Vanished.

So here is ...read more...

Common user interface mistakes in KDE applications, part 3: Message Boxes

System & Utilities

Message boxes are part of the ordinary pain the user has to face daily while using his computer. One should strive to avoid them whenever possible: a good message box is a dead message box! Asa Raskin wrote a great article on the subject: “Never use a warning when you mean undo“.

“OK-only” message boxes

With “OK-only” I mean a message box which shows some text and an “OK” button to close it.

There is almost no good reason to use “OK-only” message boxes. These message boxes can be turned into information panes at the top of the application window (KTitleWidget can be used for this, but maybe we need a more specialized widget) or turned into notifications.

My latest most-hated “OK-only” message box is the one which pops a minute or two after login when Nepomuk is disabled:

Ideally, such information should be displayed when the user disables Nepomuk, not each time he logs in (I understand this ...read more...

thinking about library modularity

System & Utilities

It'll be a topic at Platform 11, it's a topic that is ever more important KDE developers working on constrained mobile devices, it's a topic that app developers moving to or already using Qt are wondering about more and more: How modular are KDE's libraries?

The short answer is this: more than they used to be .. but with a lot of room for improvement.

We have a growing number of libraries that only depend on non-GUI parts of Qt such as KDECore, Solid and Attica to name three off the top of my head. We have more than only rely on Qt and no other KDE libraries. This is rather better than the "big glop" of libraries in kdelibs in KDE 3.x days. Are we getting the most out of this? Sadly, not really.

Here are three avenues of thought for those of us involved with writing, maintaining and/or packaging KDE's libraries to consider that could help improve things:

Packaging With More Modularity

While most of our downstream packagers tend to ...read more...

Changes in KDE Git infrastructure

System & Utilities

As some of you may be aware, sysadmin is currently preparing to launch a big change to git.kde.org: New hooks. These new hooks will be launched tomorrow, so the repositories may be in maintenance mode for a period of time.

The biggest improvement to these hooks is commit mails, which have improved significantly. Particular highlights of this is the format of the mails, and the extra information about what changes took place being included.

An example of a commit mail can be found here.

The upshot of this is that commit filters on sub-directories of git repositories now work, and the size of messages is now limited.

Several new headers, X-Commit-Ref, X-Commit-Project and X-Commit-Folders have also been added, which should hopefully allow for a more git native version of commit filter to now be built.

Regarding the format of the mails, this has changed to be more similar to SVN emails, and includes information on who pushed the revision to the repository.

Another important step forward is the launch of KDE ...read more...

Guest Post: Google Code-in Rekonq Experience

System & Utilities

As stated in my last blog post, a guest blog post by Furkan Üzümcü would be published — Here it is, enjoy.

The most exciting, sometimes boring, annoying and best days of my life is going to end tomorrow. From the beginning of Google Code-in I’ve been doing tasks, I’ve done 41 tasks and all of them for KDE and over 34 of them rekonq. I was actually a bit bias against rekonq at first, I’ve been using Firefox and Google Chrome for my whole life and I don’t really see so much difference between them and rekonq. Thinking that this project was started for fun, I guess rekonq is funnier than Google Chrome and Firefox! :D

As I said I’ve done over 34 tasks for rekonq including bug fixes and new features. I added pinning tab feature, a tab panel, access keys, theme manager, possibility to add web shortcuts through a context menu, page translation and so on.

Volume Rendering in Avogadro

System & Utilities

Since joining Kitware I have had limited spare time to work on Avogadro, and for various reasons my spare time has been more limited than usual too. Since the new year I have been able to start spending more time working on Avogadro, and open source chemistry in general, thanks to an SBIR phase I proposal that was funded last year with the US Army Corps of Engineers. This is exciting for a number of reasons, including the fact that I have the opportunity to prototype exciting new features for chemistry visualization, workflow and data management.

One of the new bits of work I have been doing is to use some of the advanced visualization techniques in VTK such as GPU accelerated volume rendering. Now the code is still pretty rough, and is more a proof of concept. I wrote a simple external Avogadro extension that links to and uses VTK to render the first volume found ...read more...

RSIBreak 0.11 released.

System & Utilities

After two months of beta testing, I’ve released version 0.11. There now is a suspend button in the popup you see just before it is time to break. This way you can finish that all important mail before you go to kitchen to fetch some koffee. Also an endless loop has been found and fixed, this took quite a bit of time to find and resolve. I hopy you enjoy this new version. A lot has changed since 0.10, and I hope it now is a mature and solid piece of software which can benefit a lot of people.

Download is available on the RSBreak site.

What is RSIBreak
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an illness which can occur as a result of continuous work with a mouse and keyboard. The risk of suffering injury increases the longer users work without breaks. RSIBreak simply offers reminders to take a break now and then.

After the start it will show up in your system tray and will monitor your activity. Whenever it detects that you have ...read more...

Update on the KDE Commit-Digest: Present and Future

System & Utilities

It has been a while since my last post - coming up to 3 months actually (wow! i'll try and blog more often this year!). In this post i'll try and give an update of all the important things that have happened in KDE Commit-Digest town recently, and where we're heading into the future.

Firstly, issue 161 has just been released: http://commit-digest.org/issues/2010-12-05/

The eagle-eyed amongst you will see that Vladislav Blanton is the chief editor of this issue, I thought this was only fair as he's done a lot of good work on this issue! This also ties in with my desire and need to step back from being the chief editor. Hopefully this is not a surprise - my plan from the beginning of the relaunch has been to get a thriving (and sustainable!) Commit-Digest set up, and then harness this raw human power to take over the world put it into other capable hands, whilst still providing technical and operational support when needed. ...read more...

First interview in BehindKDE

System & Utilities

I have started a new series in BehindKDE, the Platforms series. In this series, I will talk with developers of all the platforms KDE is available for: Windows, Mac, BSD, Solaris, Haiku (!), etc. Linux will be included in the form of KDE packagers for several distributions.

The first interview has just been published, it’s a long conversation with Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels) about KDE on Windows, the technology they (we :-) ) are using, its current state and the challenges KDE faces on Windows.

I’m starting contacts with other developers for the next 2-3 interviews. If you want to make a proposal (a developer you’d like to have interviewed, questions you’d ask, etc), please add a comment to this blog post, or contact me by e-mail or IRC.

Tagaro updates: Flexible graphics sources, work on TagaroInterface

System & Utilities

You may have observed a reduced density of posts on my blog, which is due to increased coding activity in Project Tagaro (the upcoming next generation of libkdegames). About last week, I have merged in the theming-2.0 branch which refactors big parts of TagaroGraphics and brings in some new features.

If you do not know about it yet, TagaroGraphics originated from KGameRenderer, the vector graphics rendering library used by a dozen KDE games in the upcoming 4.6 release. KGameRenderer is only able to render graphics elements from SVG files. The new TagaroGraphics framework allows multiple types of graphics sources. Currently, the additional sources “image” and “color” are available, as can be seen in the following screenshot:

Using different graphics sources in Tagaro

Both apps are the same example application. The first one gets the sprites from a PNG image (note the pixelation), while the sprites in the second screenshot are solid-colored rectangles. The graphics sources are specified by the configuration ...read more...
