Down

System & Utilities

A look at the new Debian distribution, Squeeze... Debian GNU/Linux 6.0 "Squeeze" contains approximately 29,000 software packages and fills several CDs/DVDs. To install Debian we don't need all of the discs; typically we just need the first disc of the set.

Death to the LightBox!

System & Utilities

Just a quick note here, as I’m swamped in classes.  Pro-tip: If you can’t stand the new Facebook lightbox – especially on your phone – then just hit Ctrl+R, and it will load the old image page as usual. This works great on the N900, making browsing galleries sane again.

On an aside, I hear rumblings of KActivityConsumer & Friends moving to kdelibs/experimental, which would mean I could finally get my patch for KFilePlaces finished off and shipped. This would let you show Places that are relevant to your current activity, while conserving space when not needed. Yay!

What's cooking with the telepathy-kde-contact-list?

System & Utilities

TelepathyPart of my diploma thesis agreement with Red Hat was to blog about my work for the KDE Telepathy team. I'm currently taking care of the contact list (CL) component. There was a discussion about what the CL should be able to do and what not. For the first KDE Telepathy release we decided to implement it as a moreless full featured app, like kopete. After that it may be taken down to parts and reintegrated elsehow in the desktop environment (though the CL will still exist and will be used, just some features may be moved elsewhere). But let's not discuss this just yet, it's way to early for that. Instead, let's see, how is the CL coming.

Contact List

So far, the basics are almost all in place. We have a working contacts model, working presence setting and you ...read more...

Report and Photos of the KDE Release Party in Larissa, Greece

System & Utilities

My college’s team was the first team in Greece that organized a KDE Release Party, we are so proud of this. Special thanks to Claudia and the Promo Team for sending us some fine KDE materials. We didn’t have much attendance, which is very reasonable given that we organized it during our exams, without giving it much thinking. Apart from the usual talk about how awesome KDE is, we also had a little presentation, where I talked about the history of KDE, SC and Extragear, PIM (Akonadi, Nepomuk, Strigi), and my colleague Giorgos Tsapaliokas (twin brother of Antonis) talked about Plasma and Activities, and did a quick live demonstration of those. Apart from the usual LinuxTeam guys, two guys of the greek openSUSE community came to our small city, and a teacher also attended the presentation, who showed great interest and expressed his impression especially about Nepomuk. Let’s hope we’ll see more KDE desktops in the future. After the event, we went to consume some tsipouro, where we spend a few more hours talking about ...read more...

Dear Bangalore

System & Utilities

Only a few more weeks (what, three?) until conf.kde.in, and it’s great to see a gentle stream of microblog posts come by with new features at the conference. I see there’s certificates for attendees. I find this slightly worrying, as I’ve had to sign a few in my time. Both for university courses and workshops, so I know how long it takes for 200 of them.

I’m looking forward to being on the road again, and to seeing Pradeepto, Prashanth, Akarsh and the rest of the people down south. I’m bad with names, so to all I’ve forgotten to mention explicitly here: see you soon, nonetheless. To all whom I’ve not yet had the pleasure of meeting, too: see you soon. It’ll be fun and educational.

One of the things that attendees might be warned against is my motivational tool. Aye, it is my quivering pink rod which will accompany me to India. Every Akademy since Mechelen has seen it in action.

Last — and so far only — time I was in Bangalore was for FOSS.in, ...read more...

Library dependencies

System & Utilities

I noticed someone encountered an issue with trying to find out what library is introducing dependencies into their program, and didn’t immediately think of a tool I’d written to do that, so obviously I am not “marketing” effectively. ;)

I wouldn’t bother trying to ride Robin’s coattails except that some of the issues he notes (repeated dependencies, search paths) should be implemented already in mine. Oh, and mine is GUI driven in case you’re of that persuasion (not that there’s anything wrong with CLI!)

Without further ado, ELF Library Viewer:

Screenshot of ELF Library Viewer

Please go easy on the screenshot, it’s been unchanged for a couple of years now. I’ve only just now confirmed that it even still builds.

BlueDevil 1.0.2 released

System & Utilities

The second minor version of BlueDevil (KDE’s Bluetooth support) has been released and it is the most important release since 1.0 because it adds support for some basic bluetooth feature we have been missing since 1.0, regarding Device Pairing.

The full changelog is:
  • Added support for Bluetooth 2.1 (SSP pairing)
  • Do not pair devices that don’t need it
  • Better automatic mode (Updated PIN database)
  • Randomized the default PIN
  • Random PIN of 6 characters, shrink if needed (depending on device)
  • Improved the wizard flow for a lot of devices
  • Do not show actions in systray when offline
  • Handle possible obex-data-server crashes (This is the cause for a looooooot of troubles receiving files.)
  • Fixed big file operations in kio_obexftp
  • The i18n should be fixed once for all (stable branch created)

The tarbal can be downloaded here:
MD5: c0c814146098b865144957bc8b3bd7e7

By now almost all distributions have packages, so if your distribution doesn’t poke them because this release is very important stability-wise.

Happy hacking!

Back to KDE work

System & Utilities

After a couple of months busy with other stuff now I have more time to spent on blogging. During the last weeks I have been working to fix some bugs in Plasma NM (bugs 264607,  266097, 210878), Kopete (bugs 234000, 260892, 263181, 256667, 265811, 266559 and commit 1218860) and kde-workspace (bug 264534 and 231195). All fixes are going to be in KDE SC 4.6.1. There are other bugs I am investigating, not all of them will be fixed by 4.6.1 release date though.

RFC: Regular Expressions in KDev-PG-Qt

System & Utilities

Hi folks!

Now I want to tell you about the progress in KDevelop-PG-Qt and I am interested in comments about the syntax of regular expressions/lexer-declarations, I recently implemented.

But first of all for those who do not know (probably most Planet KDE readers): What is KDev-PG-Qt (KDevelop-PG-Qt)?
“KDev-PG-Qt” is the shortform for “KDevelop-PG-Qt”, “KDevelop-PG-Qt” is the longform for “KDev-PG-Qt”, KDevelop is our favourite IDE, Qt is our favourite C++-framework, and “PG” means “Parser Generator”. So, it is KDE’s parser-generator (like Bison or AntLR) written some time ago for KDevelop, long time ago it was called “KDevelop-PG” and it used STL-strings and -streams, but then apaku (iirc) ported it to Qt, and KDevelop-PG is dead nowadays, but KDevelop-PG-Qt is still alive and used for some KDevelop-language-plugins. If you are interested, you can find an introduction here.

What am I currently doing? When writing a parser you usually divide it into two components: the scanner/lexer/lexical analysis and the parser/syntactic analysis, because it is quite comfortable to add an abstraction between single characters ...read more...

Kexi Auto Forms

System & Utilities

To go with the work i have been doing on a mobile version of Kexi, where already we have a working application and report viewer, the next step, forms, is coming on nicely.

The form plugin that currently exists in Kexi is very featureful. It allows complete control over the design of the form. Unfortnately, it does still rely on a lot of Q3 code from Kexi1. This makes it impossible to run on platforms where there is no Qt3Support.

But, on a mobile device atleast, we dont really need the flexibilty of the current form plugin, infact, there are probably use cases on the desktop where the existing plugin is overkill. That is why i have started an AutoForm plugin. An Autoform is associated with a table, and thats the design done. The intention is for the form to build itself, using appropriate widgets, using an appropriate layout such as using 2 columns if the width is greater then the height.

The first fruits of this work look like:

Climbing back

System & Utilities

I haven’t written a blog post in probably close to a year, and I haven’t committed a single line of code to any public code repository in about 4 months (if you leave out a couple of trivial changes that I had already staged way back when that were pushed in January).

Combine the birth of a new child, changing responsibilities at work, and general overall burn out and you have a nice recipe for not even wanting to do any coding. But, as with all things that I’m truly interested in, I’m not willing to throw in the towel just yet.

I’m making my way back into the water. It will be slow. I have a fine balancing act to perform if I’m going to make all of this work. Let’s go

OpenChange at Exchange RPC Plugfest (24-27 Jan 2011)

System & Utilities

Late last month, I was fortunate to be invited to Microsoft for the Exchange RPC Plugfest as part of the OpenChange team.

I decided to arrive into Redmond a few days early to get over the worst of the jetlag, and to spend some pre-plugfest hacking time with Julien Kerihuel and Jelmer Vernooij. That produced some excellent planning work, and a bit of new code. I also caught up with Tom Devey (a Microsoft consultant, who is basically the customer representative for Exchange RPC protocols) and enjoyed a nice wood-fired pizza lunch, and some night skiing at Stevens Pass. My skiing was never really good, and lack of practice and some pretty unusual conditions didn't help. It was still a lot of fun though.

The Exchange RPC plugfest kicked off on Monday (24 January 2011), with breakfast and getting oriented in the lab environment. The labs we used were in the "Platform Adoption Center" (Building 20 on the Microsoft campus at Redmond), which is a nice facility for this kind of thing. Monday afternoon had presentations from Simon Xiao and ...read more...

How to Top-Post in KMail, a KDE Linux Email Client

System & Utilities

I've been using KMail as my default email client for a couple weeks. Before that I'd used the Gmail web interface almost exclusively for a few years, and before that I'd been a pretty big fan of Thunderbird, which I'd switched to when I switched to the GNOME Linux desktop from KDE, where I'd used... Utils, Utils, Utils…

System & Utilities

The Muon Package Management Suite has been getting a lot of attention lately, but this doesn’t mean that cool things aren’t happening elsewhere in the QApt world. Since 1.0, QApt has shipped a utility called QApt Batch, a batch installer used mainly for integrating package installation into KDE applications in Kubuntu. QApt 1.2 will see the inclusion of several more utilities, that have perhaps a bit more… *ahem*… utility than QApt Batch. I will be introducing these new utilities over the next few blog posts as a little blogging miniseries. With that, I’ll start with the first post.

QApt GStreamer Helper

The QApt GStreamer Helper is an implementation of the GStreamer plugin installation framework that GStreamer applications (and more recently the GStreamer Phonon backend now support)

There’s not too much to show. Phonon sends us a request for a plugin, and we ask the user if we can install it.

The searching process uses LibQApt to find packages that provide GStreamer metadata, and uses  ...read more...

XB-70A #1 liftoff with TB-58A chase aircraft

It is time, right now, developers, and students -- craft your ideas for Google Summer of Code! Students, please drop into the IRC channels of the projects you are interested to work with, and talk about your ideas. Write to the project list, if you get no-one to talk to in IRC.

Developers, please add plenty of ideas as soon as you can: http://community.kde.org/GSoC/2011/Ideas. Students are already waiting, so the sooner your ideas are on the page the better. Make yourself available to the students, and help them get ready to do a successful project this summer. Consider mentoring or co-mentoring; it can be a great experience.

In case you are new to GSoC in KDE please check http://community.kde.org/GSoC.

Krita 2.4 progress

System & Utilities

Since we released Krita 2.3 last month, the development of Krita 2.4 has been running at an incredible pace. So I thought it might be a good idea to show what we have been doing in the new version.

Since we released we got a huge amount feature wishes, so I took some time to implemented some of them. Most of these changes we in the user interface, as can be seen in the following screenshot.

If you have used Krita 2.3 and earlier versions you probably notice that the tool- and statusbar now take a lot less space. The funny thing behind this I never really noticed it before (I guess as KDE user I was very used to bigger margins and due to my big screen it never bothered me much), but then I saw some Krita on Gnome screenshots (like here) and there is was very obvious.

One very surprising thing about the Krita is that ...read more...

About Friendship

System & Utilities

The inspiration for this article stemmed from a recent discussion with a bunch of friends. The core of our topic was: "Does friendship differ from love?" Now, love can mean a lot of things. Initially, in this discussion, it meant the classical romantic love between life partners. Which is of course a special thing. However, my argument was (controversial as always): "True friendship is the same thing as romantic love, if you have the guts to leave out the romantic crap." Please let me explain, what true friendship means to me:

  • Being there for each other. Especially when the friend is in need of that (sickness, financial troubles).

  • No need for being dishonest. A real friendship implies that secret topics can be discussed. They will stay secret.

  • Surviving arguments. True friends will value each other's opinion, whether they agree with it, or disagree. The truth can be told, and it's expected to be told.

  • I do not have very many "true friends", but: Quality > Quantity. My girlfriend is in ...read more...

Camp KDE 2011: Back to the Bay

    System & Utilities

In January of 2008, KDE hosted its 4.0 release event in the Bay Area.  A little over 3 years later, KDE returns!

Celeste has just posted an article on the Dot with all of the details: Camp KDE is going to be held April 4th and 5th in San Fransisco.  The Linux Foundation is hosting its Collaboration Summit on April 6th through the 8th.  In the same city.  At the same hotel.  What a coincidence.

Camp KDE starts in two months: So get planning and get packing.  The Camp KDE website will refer you to this registration site.

Interested in giving a presentation?  The CFP (Call for Papers) is open immediately: Head to the Camp KDE website for more details.  Proposals are due February 25 – what are you waiting for?  You’ve got a lot of typing to do.

Downtown SF, the Linux Foundation and KDE.  This is going to be great, but you know that already, don’t you?

    git 'er done

    System & Utilities

I can't believe nobody has blogged this yet, but kdelibs and kdebase are now both in git! There's also been a bit of a reorganization undertaken. Led by our fearless git migration rule writers Ian and Nicolás, we have five repositories where once there were four:

    • kdelibs (ok, no surprises yet..)

    • kde-runtime, which used to be kdebase/runtime/

    • kde-baseapps, which lumps together the file managers and related utilities (like bookmarks editors, kdialog, etc)

    • konsole

    • kde-workspace, which used to be kdebase/workspace and now contains all things Plasma Workspaces; yes, that includes stuff like the mighty KWin and KSysGuard. Of course libplasma is still in kdelibs.

Also of note is that the KTextEditor interface, while still in kdelibs, is primarily developed in (and sync'd with) the code in the Kate git repository.

This is setting the stage for a nice opportunity for us to work on the further modularization of the KDE Platform for app devel while also giving the workspaces a clearer and more separate footing on their own.

    Konstruktor: back and alive!

    System & Utilities

    Screenshot 1
    Screenshot 3
    Screenshot 3

I've been very busy doing my full time for last two years. Along with my job, I was slowly working on my project called KLDraw (and then Klotz) in my spare time.

Many things have changed. I renamed it Konstruktor (yeah, I know that was an awkward decision), refined UI and rewrote the rendering code from the scratch. Now I believe this one is almost feature complete and comparable to major LDraw-based CADs out there (MLCad, LeoCAD, Bricksmith, ...)

Konstruktor 0.9.0-beta1 is just released. The source code is here: http://konstruktor.influx.kr/konstruktor-0.9-beta1.tar.bz2 Still this is in beta stage, please report bugs as you find them.

This project is now hosted at GitHub. Feel free to participate and fork if you want to. I have project homepage (http://konstruktor.influx.kr) but nothing's there so far. I still suck at designing website, please mail me if you want to help.

Release Party KDE 4.6 at Porto Alegre – RS – Brazil

    System & Utilities

We met day 26 of January, the day of the release in Pinguim Bar at Porto Alegre.

You can see pictures on KDE-BR flickr:

    KDE-RS

    KDE at Pinguim :)

It was pretty cool, I met personally who I knew only by email. We talked, exchanged some ideas, talked about KDE (and I realized that some people still compares KDE 3 to 4), about our Planet in Portuguese, Qt and random subjects.

There were people from various places: Érico, from Bagé (the other side from Rio Grande do Sul), Pedro from Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Julia, from Salvador, Bahia, which is already producing artwork for KDE-BR. There was only one person from Porto Alegre, the rest is “migrant” or are thinking about “migrate” to POA:) And there are users and those who want to start collaborating with KDE and/or resume old projects, like Huberto :D

The good thing is that more people attended than the ...read more...

    Blizzard of 2011

    System & Utilities

As I sit here writing this right now, we here in Chicago are hunkered down with the expectation of receiving more than 24 inches (60cm), of snow. Hoping I can get this posted before the power totally goes out here due to the wind. The wind is making it even worse. We have sustained winds in the 25 to 35 miles per hour (40 to 56 kph), with gusts around 50mph (80kph). It is nuts, but it is fun at the same time. Luckily for us, we don’t close down like other major cities in the US, well except for schools.

EDIT: Forgot to add a link to pics I will be updating of our storm just in case you were interested. Head over to my Picasa Pictures and enjoy. Getting ready to head out and try to stream via U-Stream, because it is nuts right now.

Well, I was looking at the state of documentation in both KDE and Kubuntu and realized it really needs a lot of help. Now ...read more...

Finding the unloved, 2011, part I

    System & Utilities

As some of you might already have read, it was time again to find those parts of KDE which projects would need some more love. We (the CWG team) requested input from responsible parties to let us know which those projects are. Now, after 2 weeks we are now sadly announcing those, but on the other hand we are eager to see any help coming in.

So, without any particular order, those are the projects reported to us:

    KDE Games

    • The maintainers of several games are inactive, so bug reports pile up. On the code side, KSirk should be ported to Telepathy from its own Jabber implementation to reduce code complexity. Helping hands are also desired in updating the GGZ libraries, which enable networked multiplayer games.
contact kde-games-devel@kde.org or majewsky at gmx.net

    KDE WWW

    • php, css, html coders needed to maintain kde website infrastructure
    kde-www@kde.org

    Kdebase/apps/konsole

    • all kinds of help - The only active maintainer is just trying to plug the crashes and doesn't have as much time as he did.  He needs someone ...read more...
