Plasma NM: bugs fixed after 4.6.3

System & Utilities

Following my last post about bugs fixed in Plasma NM, here is the list of bugs fixed after 4.6.3 release date (May 6th):

. Fix some issues when entering wireless channel manually instead of using the spinbox buttons.

. Add text in main window to warn when using Plasma NM with wrong NM version.
274161: Prevents crash when configuring 3G modem.
273894: Prevent crashes when closing kcmshell too fast after closing the connection editor.
. Fix two crashes when editing IPv4 config.
273955: Prevents dangling pointer crash.
266268: Try to adjust plasmoid size automatically.
273265: Fix crash on editing connections in KCM module.
. Update main CMakeLists.txt file to indicate that now we need at least NetworkManager-0.8.1. That is because of the IPv6 implementation, which first appeared in 0.8.1.
. Fix UUID check for DUN and NAP services in networkmanagement_configshell which prevented adding new Bluetooth connections.
272942: Change the automatic launching of Mobile Connection Wizard into a notification.
157384: Allow automatically set connection's ...read more...

on the story of browser names

System & Utilities

future = browser?

One of the early graphical web browser that got really popular was Mosaic, developed at National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Some folks from the team, along with SGI founder Jim Clark, decided that it's worth a venture and formed a company, originally called Mosaic Communication and then later renamed to Netscape Communication.

Netscape's flagship desktop product was a much more advanced web browser than Mosaic. Jamie Zawinski coined the name "Mozilla", as it was supposed to be Mosaic Killer (Mozilla = Mosaic + Godzilla). At the later stage, the final browser was widely known as Netscape Navigator. For browsing the web, obviously you need a navigator.

Parallel to that, another company called Spyglass licensed the technology from NCSA and produced a web browser, Spyglass Mosaic. It is fun to see the same ...read more...

There is a Substantial Antagonism between Free Software and Capitalism

System & Utilities

It is not uncommon that people want to tell me that Free Software and Free Knowledge fit nicely into the concepts of capitalism. They are right that they can do a good job for humanity by supporting Free Software or Free Knowledge while they are accepting capitalistic circumstances, feeling comfortable within them. But it is not true that FLOSS and Free Knowledge are about free markets and capitalism. Freedom is not about markets at all. Markets depend on the concept of scarcity. When supporting Free Software, Free Knowledge, Free Research etc. you are working against the concept of scarcity, they remove the scarcity where it is definitely not necessary. Anybody can benefit from software and knowledge, anybody can make it better. Everybody is allowed to copy it. That are the fundamental concepts of Free Software, and that is a fundamental antagonism to scarcity. The reason that it is working within capitalism is not a common ideology. The reason is: capitalism is not totalitarian. Most gouvernments do not want it to affect any aspect of life, there remains the freedom to ...read more...

GSoC 2011: Improve of slides management in Calligra Stage. An introduction

System & Utilities
Calligra Stage
Hello KDE Planet!

I am Paul, and I study computer science. I will work this GSoC on Calligra Stage (http://www.calligra-suite.org/stage/). Stage is the presentation application of Calligra Suite.
As you know an important part in a Presentation application are tools for the management of slides (I mean those that let you manage your slides represented by thumbnails).
The aim of my project is to improve the usability and consistency of three of these tools, which despite having different goals can share a lot of functionality. These tools are the docker in the normal view (at right of the first screenshot), the slides sorter view and the dialog that allows you to create custom presentations.

Some of the features that I plan to add ...read more...

Akonadi Trashhandling

System & Utilities

End of February I attended the annual pim meeting in osnabrück for the first time. There I started the akonadi trashhandling, which I need for MindMirror. The idea is to have a uniform way of handling trashed/deleted items in akonadi.

The general idea is to have to ways to separate trash from you normal items:

  • Mark them as trash but keep them in the same akonadi collection:
    This would i.e. allow a resource to map the deleted flag to i.e. the imap deleted flag.
    Of course, if the resource doesn’t support that, all items will remain visible for remote locations (i.e. gmail).
  • Mark them as trash and move them to a separate collection:
    This can be configured on a per resource basis, and allows to collect trash in i.e. another resource.
    This allows that trash is effectively hidden also to synchronised resources, but the downside is that your trash is not available on remote locations (except if you use another resource with sync as trash location).

Of course it is up to ...read more...

My GSoC project – Printing support for KStars – Let the coding begin!

System & Utilities

So, after almost a month of researching KStars code-base and writing simple mock-ups, it’s time to begin actual coding. The aim of my project is to provide full printing support for KStars, including finder charts and observation logger forms. As logger forms will use some of the code developed for finder charts, it’s an obvious decision to implement finder charts first.

Finder charts, as the name suggest, are helpful for finding sky objects, particularly stars – mainly because they contain images of sky centered at the point of interest with different zoom levels, enabling you to quickly find the object you are looking for and begin the observation. Apart from multiple fields-of-view, finder charts should contain legend with star magnitudes and of course scale of the chart. There will also be an option to add customized annotations to the objects presented on the finder chart.

The first task on my checklist is the implementation of customizable legends for finder charts – I will keep you updated with results, with some working finder chart examples in a few weeks.

Good luck ...read more...

Improving SSL Security with Certificate Change Notification

System & Utilities

Improving the security of SSL is a hot topic these days, and trust in certifcate authorities is rightly at an all time low. One way of improving the situation that doesn't rely on believing that a 3rd party will actually do their job properly is to notify users when the certificate for a site changes. There are already extensions for some browsers that offer this facility, so I sat down today to write a proof of concept that looked at how this implemented in Qt.

What I've implemented is a class that can simply be plugged into QSslSocket based code to give the user a warning if the certificate for a site has changed since their last visit. The monitor class can keep track of many sockets and the cache is persistent. The idea is that the application tells the certificate monitor about the SSL socket, so that it becomes monitored by calling the addSocket() method, this method simply adds the socket to a QSignalMapper:

void SslCertificateMonitor::addSocket(QSslSocket *socket)
{
d->mapper->setMapping(socket, socket);
connect(socket, SIGNAL(encrypted()), d->mapper, SLOT(map()));
}

Phonon GStreamer retooling

System & Utilities

We got a number of replies to my previous call for feedback, which is absolutely wonderful. I figure I might as well address one of the most common issues that everyone talks about: Gapless playback in Amarok.

Just so you all know,  a solution for it is in the works. However, it isn’t an easy fix. Large portions of the GStreamer backend are being retooled, redesigned, and rewritten to make it happen. Regardless, progress is being made, and has been since I started on this adventure about 3 weeks ago.

I’ll admit, Phonon GStreamer’s code isn’t exactly pretty. Sure, it plays every file format known to mankind, offers to install the codecs you’re missing, and has very high performance at the same time, but the design is far from optimal.

Part of gstreamer’s base plugins package is a nifty little element called “playbin2″. Using it is really easy, and can be demonstrated at the command line: $ gst-launch playbin2 uri=\"file:///srv/media/Music/Paul and Storm - Your Love Is....flac\" That replaces the previously lengthy process of building a pipeline ...read more...

SCIENCE, NOT FICTION

System & Utilities
Hi KDE Community,

           It’s my first post on the planet, so please don’t shoot me if something goes wrong :) Just week ago I come back form the Promo sprint in Southampton. It was a great experience and my first time I got in real touch with people behind KDE. Tons of work has been done, but you probably have read Justin’s post on the dot.

           But this time I’m not going to talk about promo. Please, let me dig up a little bit about one of the most “flammable” topics - the GUI. Most user interface related discussions are, lets say, at least difficult and emotional, as there are many great ideas and possible solutions while each of them have strong arguments behind. Instead of trying to came with some sort of compromise (compromises usually requires to give up on some something, and that is bad). On the other hand if we could somehow have all/any designs put under the test and then just ...read more...

Plasma NM: NM-0.9

System & Utilities

Hi all, as I said in another post I have spent last Saturday and Sunday trying to improve NetworkManager-0.9 support in Plasma NM. The current situation is a follow: networkmanagement/master compiles/works with NM-0.8.1 and above. Branch networkmanagement/nm09 compiles against NM-0.8.x but needs several hacks to work with NM-0.9. Plasma NM uses Solid's NetworkManager and ModemManager backends from kde-workspace repository. Since 4.6.0 the NetworkManager backend uses the ModemManager backend for Bluetooth/Gsm network interfaces.

I have heard of two other attempts to bring/improve NM-0.9 support to Plasma NM. The first one is from Fedora guys and even them admit that it is not ideal. The other is from Will Stephenson, the Plasma NM maintainer and who most people here already know, including me, hi Will :-). Well, I do not know how much time Will's libnm-qt is going to take to be ready to be used in Plasma NM so I am doing what I proposed last month:

  1. Create the new Solid's NM-0.9 backend outside kde-workspace repository so that we ...read more...

Qt Designer texts: disambiguation vs comment

System & Utilities

Qt Designer has two fields regarding translations for text properties (e.g. the text of a Label, or the tool tip of a Widget) disambiguation and comment (that unfortunately map to the comment (for disambiguation) and extracomment (for comment) XML attributes in the .ui file), let me give a bit of explanation of what they mean since I've found some errors on it's usage while fixing a bug we had in our translation scripts (aka scripty).

First some background on how translation works, when you ask for a string to be translated (e.g. "Run") you can give some context that acts as an extra key (e.g. "Verb" or "Noun") so translators can do different translations
(Run, Verb) -> Ejecutar
(Run, Noun) -> Ejecución
This extra key is what you write in the disambiguation field

On the other hand when you write something in the comment field, it only appears as a comment to the translator, so if you have two texts with the same text (e.g. "Run") and different comments (e.g. "Verb" or "Noun") it will not work, so ...read more...

Planning the first release of KDE Telepathy

System & Utilities

Given the various blog posts, and (somewhat unnecessary) hysteria over the news of Skype I felt like I should give an update on what's going on in KDE Telepathy.

Pace over the past 5 months has been ace, we've got a lot done, and as mentioned by a few people already - we're releasing "soon"! We don't have a fixed date, but instead we will release when a set list of outstanding bugs are fixed. Probably about 4 weeks time. (unless I die of stress organising it all in the meantime)

What's in this release?

There's not as much as we'd like, but we're making a concious effort to ship something that really works. You should be able to create any type of IM account and have basic contact-list tasks and have normal text chats.

At this stage nothing is really fixed, and we're in early stages of shaping where we're going. Hopefully you'll see what we're aiming for with KDE Telepathy and a start to the realisation of some of what telepathy is about.

This first release won't ...read more...

Calligra is the Future of Free Software Office Suites

System & Utilities

A couple of days ago Michael Meeks published a blog called 'LibreOffice is the future of Free Software Office suites'. Michael is one of the lead developers of LibreOffice and also one of the founders of the Document Foundation, the organization behind LibreOffice. In that blog he makes a number of points that leads to his conclusion in the title:

  • LibreOffice is vendor neutral
  • LibreOffice is robust to participants leaving
  • Linux distributions are safer with LibreOffice
  • LibreOffice has a different, and better QA model
  • Division is (sadly) sometimes necessary
  • The Document Foundation champions ODF
  • We are transparent about our contributors
Each of those points is a section in the text. If you haven't read the blog already, you should probably do that now before continuing your reading here. It's quite long but it's a good read.

However...

What is obvious when reading that text is that Michael only compares LibreOffice to one other free office suite: OpenOffice.org. He probably has a good platform to stand on when saying that compared to OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice is more future secure.

But ...read more...

First day at Libre Graphics Meeting

System & Utilities

So here I'm sitting at my desk at my "Cosy Studio" in the Therese Casgrain student housing facility/hotel calles Les Studios Hotel in Montreal. Too tired to do anything but nibble cherry tomatoes and drink a beer, after the first day at the Libre Graphics Meeting, 2011 edition.

Perhaps slightly less busy than last year, and I'm missing a lot of familiar faces, but the quality of the talks has been outstanding so far. I'm working on experimentally getting colord up and running on my OpenSUSE laptop so I can check whether I can generate Qt bindings for the dbus interface to experiment with integration in Krita.

If the number of questions people want to ask after a presentation is a measure of success, then Lukas' Krita presentation was a huge success. By that metric, but also by any other metric was a huge success indeed! Lukas showed off all the new stuff we've created since LGM 2010 -- and was followed by Animtim giving a workshop on creating a comic in Krita. The ...read more...

What is gpodder.net?

The podcast web service gpodder.net is a free, online and open source application that can be used for podcast searching, subscription and status synchronization.

Back in Black

System & Utilities

(warning: This is a boring, non-code-related blog post. As such, feel free skip ;-)

Well I have some even better news than my last blog post, through just a random idea I had (after seeing it online)...

Apparently I am, in essence, "allergic" to milk products. After going without milk for about 2 days, I realized my migraines were almost entirely gone. So now I am avoiding *anything* which contains milk in it (cheeses, chocolates, etc. etc.).

The issue was basically, that my diet used to consist largely of milk; that is, milk in the morning for cereal, milk for lunch, and milk with dinner with possibly some icecream ;-p

So now that I try to avoid everything which has milk in it, it's looking like my migraines are gone (I'm going to ease off some of this medication to verify it). I feel kind of silly for having to go through all of this when it was something as simple as drinking milk; no loss though, in the end I am happy about the direction ...read more...
