Calligra is the Future of Free Software Office Suites

System & Utilities

A couple of days ago Michael Meeks published a blog called 'LibreOffice is the future of Free Software Office suites'. Michael is one of the lead developers of LibreOffice and also one of the founders of the Document Foundation, the organization behind LibreOffice. In that blog he makes a number of points that leads to his conclusion in the title:

  • LibreOffice is vendor neutral
  • LibreOffice is robust to participants leaving
  • Linux distributions are safer with LibreOffice
  • LibreOffice has a different, and better QA model
  • Division is (sadly) sometimes necessary
  • The Document Foundation champions ODF
  • We are transparent about our contributors
Each of those points is a section in the text. If you haven't read the blog already, you should probably do that now before continuing your reading here. It's quite long but it's a good read.

However...

What is obvious when reading that text is that Michael only compares LibreOffice to one other free office suite: OpenOffice.org. He probably has a good platform to stand on when saying that compared to OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice is more future secure.

But ...read more...

First day at Libre Graphics Meeting

System & Utilities

So here I'm sitting at my desk at my "Cosy Studio" in the Therese Casgrain student housing facility/hotel calles Les Studios Hotel in Montreal. Too tired to do anything but nibble cherry tomatoes and drink a beer, after the first day at the Libre Graphics Meeting, 2011 edition.

Perhaps slightly less busy than last year, and I'm missing a lot of familiar faces, but the quality of the talks has been outstanding so far. I'm working on experimentally getting colord up and running on my OpenSUSE laptop so I can check whether I can generate Qt bindings for the dbus interface to experiment with integration in Krita.

If the number of questions people want to ask after a presentation is a measure of success, then Lukas' Krita presentation was a huge success. By that metric, but also by any other metric was a huge success indeed! Lukas showed off all the new stuff we've created since LGM 2010 -- and was followed by Animtim giving a workshop on creating a comic in Krita. The ...read more...

My KDE Google Summer of Code Project

System & Utilities
Hi everyone. I'm here to talk a little bit about my Google Summer of Code(GSoC) Project - yes, my project was approved and I'm very happy. YAY ^^.

Basically, the project goal is to integrate gpodder.net web service with Amarok podcasting functionalities. Now, lets answer some questions...

What is gpodder.net?

The podcast web service gpodder.net is a free, online and open source application that can be used for podcast searching, subscription and status synchronization.

What are the benefits of this integration?

Plasma + KWin = beautiful

System & Utilities

Until last week I was still running good old Slackware 12.1 with KDE 3.5.something. I had skipped Slackware 13.0, because it had still no support for virtual screens in X/xrandr, and the KDE 4.4 in Slackware 13.1 crashed a few times while playing around with it.

Back in Black

System & Utilities

(warning: This is a boring, non-code-related blog post. As such, feel free skip ;-)

Well I have some even better news than my last blog post, through just a random idea I had (after seeing it online)...

Apparently I am, in essence, "allergic" to milk products. After going without milk for about 2 days, I realized my migraines were almost entirely gone. So now I am avoiding *anything* which contains milk in it (cheeses, chocolates, etc. etc.).

The issue was basically, that my diet used to consist largely of milk; that is, milk in the morning for cereal, milk for lunch, and milk with dinner with possibly some icecream ;-p

So now that I try to avoid everything which has milk in it, it's looking like my migraines are gone (I'm going to ease off some of this medication to verify it). I feel kind of silly for having to go through all of this when it was something as simple as drinking milk; no loss though, in the end I am happy about the direction ...read more...

Regression Testing, Please!

System & Utilities

I've recently written a bit about my difficulties using UbuntuOne in Kubuntu Maverick and now again in Natty. The sad part is that a bit of regression testing, and working with our Kubuntu developer could have solved this situation long ago. APIs are supposed to give application developers access, not make that access more difficult. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+bug/369230

Now a related incident has happened: a Canonical uTouch patch to Qt which breaks Wacom tablets. For more on this, see: http://www.valdyas.org/fading/index.cgi/software/krita/no_pressure_in_krita.html.

Thank you to the Koffice people for blogging about this.

ScottK assures me that a fixed package can be found in his PPA: https://launchpad.net/~kitterman/+archive/ppa/ while we try to get the fix properly sorted: https://bugs.launchpad.net/koffice/+bug/762938.

Canonical developers, please do some regression testing against Kubuntu before committing changes.

Rsync, Level: Expert

System & Utilities

Learning all kinds of new things, like how to escape spaces in filenames. When I tried the command $ sudo rsync -avr --progress /etc/ /media/FreeAgent Backup/etc/I got only error messages. What works is quoting, sudo rsync -avr --progress /etc/ \"/media/FreeAgent Backup/etc/\"or escaping: sudo rsync -avr --progress /etc/ /media/FreeAgent Backup/etc/. I back up /etc as it's small, and may be useful. The main thing to backup, of course, is /home: sudo rsync -avr --progress /home/valorie/ \"/media/FreeAgent Backup/home/\"where /home is the source, and /media/FreeAgent Backup/ is the destination. Thanks to sbeattie and maco in #ubuntu-women for showing me this.

Also, empty trash BEFORE running a backup of /home!
sudo rm -r /home/valorie/.local/share/Trash/*. In #ubuntu-women, JanC suggested using "the GUI or a special commandline tool to empty the trash, as it keeps references around etc. The trash-cli package contains a command empty-trash." When I asked what she meant by references, JanC explained, "references as to what file has to be restored to where (if you ever want to do so). And of course there are ...read more...

Krita, Wacom, Qt and distributions

System & Utilities

It's a never-ending tale of sorrow and tears... The tale of Qt, Wacom and distributions. It happens with distressing regularity that people join us on the #krita irc channel, the krita forums or the krita mailing list. Users, but also developers. Their question? "Krita doesn't seem to support my Wacom tablet, but Gimp and MyPaint work fine!"

This is never actually caused by Krita. Krita uses Qt's wacom support, same as for instance Maya does. The Qt Wacom api is good, the rate of events is good, we are fine with that.

The problem is that sometimes Qt breaks when a new version of the wacom drivers is released. And sometimes distributions package the wrong version of Qt and the wrong version of the Wacom drivers together. We don't have an exact table of what works and what doesn't work. As developers we tend to drift to distributions that are relatively good at supporting Wacom and Qt together... OpenSUSE hasn't failed me for a couple of years now! But just check our help forum.

And then there ...read more...

Searching again (400ms -> 2ms)

System & Utilities

The problem statement: you want to search for a file using any arbitrary substring contained in the file url. This is deceptively hard, if you think in a relational db way, you want something "like %foo%" where the leading percent will force indexes to be considered redundant and a sequential scan to ensue. If you try instead to break up the file's URL into words and use a full text indexing solution you will find your old friend the leading percent again, like here for Lucene.

One easy way to use full text indexing style and allow substrings is to cheat. First disable word stemming (ie, dont turn diving and dive into a stemmed "dive" word). Then for each word to be added to the full text index, shift it left from 1..10 times. So wonderful, onderful, nderful, derful, erful etc are all added as words for the same URL. This is most simply accomplished using a postgresql function to do the shifting.

Then when you search for a substring foo you want to ...read more...

My first week work in GSOC 2011

System & Utilities

Hi to all,

This is my first blog after I got selected for GSOC-2011. My project is in Krita, under calligra and my task is “Tagging and Management for Krita Resources”. Here is the link for my project proposal http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2011/srikanth_tiyyagura/1. I am so thankful to Boudewijn rempt, who helped me from the start, i.e. from building Calligra to getting in GSOC 2011. And also thankful to the KDE community for helping me in getting GSOC especially KDE India people who did a good work by organizing kde.conf.in. I am so thankful to them.

Then about my mentor Sven Langkamp, we started working together from the last week. I am a bit shy in interacting with people. So, I think I need some more time to mingle with my mentor. He is very patient in answering my stupid and silly questions.

Then my work in first week (April 25 – May 1) is to study the Get Hot new stuff option implemented in presets tab and fix it as it was broken. ...read more...

Show your Yahoo calendars in KOrganizer ? so easy…

System & Utilities

A few days ago, Jeremy explained how to add your Google calendars to Kontact, how about doing the same with your Yahoo calendars ?

Thanks to the DAV resource, adding external calendars became quite easy, let’s see how to do.

Start KOrganizer, in the calendars list, right-click and select ‘Add Calendar’

In the list of calendars type, select the DAV groupware resource and press ‘OK’

In the groupware server list, choose  Zimbra then ‘Next’

Now enter ‘caldav.calendar.yahoo.com‘ in the Host field and check the Use secure connection box. Do NOT add https:// before the URL

After pressing ‘Next’, press the Test connection button

and enter your Yahoo login and password

Kubuntu 11.04 for the Upgrade

System & Utilities

A new release is out. The 11.04 release page shows what's new. Samba is a theme with working file and printer sharing, however did we let that stay broken for so long. Improvements to the language selector are nice. We switched to GStreamer for the Phonon backend, which gives us better HTML5 video support. The GTK Oxygen theme makes Firefox et al fit in nicer. And of course all the goodness of KDE's 4.6 releases. We even snuck in a game of Patience onto the CD after 5 years of persistent requests asking for a game by default.

See the upgrade instructions or the download page to get it.

Users of other Ubuntu flavours can just install the kubuntu-desktop package to try it out. Switching to Plasma is no less of a step than switching to any of the new Gnome desktops this release, it's got to be worth trying.

Many thanks as always to the wonderful Kubuntu community, including a bunch of new names ...read more...

Google Summer of Code!

System & Utilities

My GSOC project “Plasma Zeitgeist Journal” got accepted as a Google Summer of Code project. Wheee!

What is Zeitgeist?

Zeitgeist is describe in the following text taken from their website:
Zeitgeist is a service which logs the users’ activities and events, anywhere from files opened to websites visited and conversations had.
I’ve been explaining to my classmates and professors what exactly that means, and I’ve come up with the following description.

Let’s consider your web browser history. It shows what websites you visited when. You can also search for things in a number of ways, such as through the address bar, drilling down to see what sites you visited X days ago, or just pulling up the entire list. Your browser’s history is a really handy tool.

Why can’t every application have a history? And why not view it all in one place? And why not let other applications do neat things with it?

That is Zeitgeist. It lets you view your entire history of everything ever. You can see when you edited that latex file in ...read more...

Blocking a nostril

System & Utilities

I have been meaning to add sane support to libferris since I upgraded my scanner to something modern. I now also have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) so naturally that needs to be a filesystem too. A quick example of how this might be useful, to turn a document into something on screen quickly:

$ fcat sane:///my-scanner/color/scan.jpg | okular -

The trees under sane:// allow preconfigured scanning units and discovery. If you have setup my-scanner then no device listing is performed with sane, a good thing because discovery can be slow. When you configure a scanner you create one or more directories with specific configurations of how you want the scan to proceed. Incidentally, configuration is of course done with a filesystem. Inside ~/.ferris/sane you create a directory for your scanner, plomp the device name into scanner/device and create directories with scanning options for that scanner.

As well as scan.jpg there is a directory "adf" which chomps new things from the ADF for each file you read. Having this directory allows you to grab 20 documents by ...read more...

Plasma NM: Bluetooth tethering

System & Utilities

Two weeks ago Alex Fiestas contacted me for us to fix one of the often requested features in Bluedevil: tethering (use of a bluetooth device, usually a cell phone, to access the Internet wirelessly). Last year during Solid Sprint in Madrid he and Will Stephenson worked on that (I also helped) but we still did not figure out how to make it work as easily as possible. Well, we are getting close...

Tethering needs support from both Bluedevil and Plasma NM, and they must cooperate to a certain degree to register the connection in NetworkManager. After some research and some answers from the NetworkManager's guys we finally got the information we needed. Most of the needed code went to Plasma NM and Solid, the Bluedevil part was already almost done.

To keep the story short here is the screenshot of a tethering connection in Plasma NM:

Right to Left Systemsettings

System & Utilities

It has been a while since my last blog post, but I hope to blog more regularly from now on. I have been looking at my todo list at KDE, and I have some necessary things to do, and others that are just ideas and need to be developed.

For now, I have been hacking today on the Right to Left support on the categorized view. It was on my todo since the big refactor that I made long time ago. It is indeed very well structured in the inside, but was missing this important piece for Right to Left users.

So, I have fixed this bug on master and backported it to the 4.6 branch. I have also adapted in this case the category drawer of Systemsettings, which was kind of special because of the neat gradients. So, here is the mandatory screenshot:

QApt sexiness…

Me, Wrong? Oh, Yes!

System & Utilities

Thanks to DoctorMo's great blogpost, I just watched another great Ted Talk, by Kathryn Schulz: On being wrong. I've had a similar experience to her opening story, where my brain was stuck in a wrong ... frame, I guess you could call it. A mistaken conceptual frame. And of course, I've made some huge mistakes in my life, and in all of them, I felt totally justified in my actions, as in the Fool of the first Tarot card.

But the reason I decided to discuss this issue here, on my tech blog, has to do with the social costs she mentions in the talk (please watch it!). When we present our case to others, and they disagree, we often feel that they are 1. ignorant, 2. idiots, or 3. malevolent. This series of unfortunate assumptions is played out in our culture over and over again, whether "our culture" means the ...read more...
