Proseminar: Computing Maximal Independent Sets an a PRAM

System & Utilities

Last year I had a proseminar at university and I do not want the stuff to moulder on my hard drive. It was about randomised algorithms and I had to write about ways to compute maximal independent sets in parallel. The considerations are primarily theoretically, proving runtime complexities on abstract parallel machines—we do not have a problem with using polynomially many cores for a trivial task (we simply have to choose anything that fits) which would in practice be more difficult to distribute to the nodes than computing it sequentially—but it might be interesting to see how randomisation can guarantee uncoupling between different processes resulting in a better runtime complexity, I enjoyed it. What is a maximal independent set? Given a graph it is a subset of the vertices of the graph being both independent and dominating, no two of its members are adjacent, but every other vertex is adjacent to a member of the set—not to be confused with maximum independent sets being maximal independent sets of maximal cardinality, computing maximum independent sets is NP hard. If anybody is ...read more...

Sorry for the old blog posts flooding the planets - was not intentional... Not sure why that happened.

But at least I've got good news: If you're in or around Prague it is time to hurry to the SUSE offices - SuSE LINUX, s.r.o. Lihovarska 1060/12 Prague 190 00 Czech Republicn - for the KDE 4.8 release party!!!

I'll be showing what's new in the latest release and there are a few more talks. On the right proof that the CAKE IS REAL!

Calligra Words: undo/redo framework

System & Utilities

As C.Boemann already said, we met at my place for two days in order to fix some serious issues we had with the undo/redo framework in Calligra Words (and Stage for that matter).

The undo/redo framework is something I wrote when I first started contributing to KOffice about 3 years ago. I have to say that I was not really looking forward having to jump into this stuff again. I am not such a masochist and the memories I have of writing this are not ones of an easy glide.
It actually turned out to be really fun and gratifying. There were some headaches involved to be sure but overall I really enjoyed it.

To summarise a bit (more detailed description bellow for the hard hearted): we use Qt Scribe framework for our document. When an edition is done on a QTextDocument, it emits a signal telling that an undo/redo action was added on the QTextDocument internal undoStack. The application listens to this signal and can create an undo action on its stack to match QTextDocument's internal one.

Mounting statusnet/identica as a filesystem

System & Utilities

With the 1.5.12 release of libferris hot off the presses, I thought I'd blog about how to use the new statusnet mounting. I tried to do some testing against identica at the start, and managed to get myself silenced there ;) I was resurrected within hours once I put forward my case as not-a-trollbot^tm. Anyway, that led me to setup my own local statusnet server for testing against, and now libferris can mount identi.ca and also one or more local servers if you so desire.... yay!

There is a little bit of setup required, web keys, secrets and oauth... the normal story.
The identica filesystem contains a directory for each server you have setup in ~/.ferris/identica. To update my public status I just write to the status file in my identica account:

$ echo "this is coming from the console via libferris, mounting the public statusnet ;-p"
| ferris-redirect identica://identica/status

To see what has been going on I can list the timeline directory, using "-0" to get libferris to tell me what metadata is interesting ...read more...

Say Hello to our must have new plasmoid

System & Utilities

No, Apper is not winning a plasmoid (I still see no use for that) :P

It has been almost two years since I last touched print-manager, probably a few bug fixes but nothing big. The main reason was that when I reached the part where we add new printers I saw that it was very hard to do it like system-config-printer does, the reason is that it has a bunch of tricks to find the best driver for your printer. The ideal world would be taking the system-config-printer python code that has the smartness and put it into a C shared lib, this would be great since anyone willing to write this kind of software could use it just as we use the CUPS library which is also written in C.

I asked a bunch of people to help me on this task since it’s not a very easy task and demands time which I don’t have. I think two persons tried to help me but also due to my complex threaded code they got ...read more...

The Costs of Supporting Legacy Hardware

System & Utilities

The interesting IT news of last week is probably that the next Mac OS X version will drop support for some legacy hardware. Looking back at the history of Apple we see that this is not the first time, but that the company dropped support for old hardware quite regularly by changing the CPU architecture. This time it is different as the GPU is the reason for the drop of support.

This made me wonder what are actually the costs to support legacy hardware in KWin? While it is completely acceptable that new Windows versions and new Mac OS X versions do not run on legacy hardware, there seems to be the demand that free software has to support all kind of legacy hardware. So what does supporting legacy hardware cost for KWin?

What’s important to remember when asking this question is that supporting legacy hardware has nothing to do with supporting low end hardware. That is supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 hardware is in fact an improvement as most of the code is shared with the OpenGL ...read more...

Build-Tool Version 0.6.0.rc1 released

System & Utilities

I just released the first release candidate of the build-tool 0.6 series. It is a release with many changes. Therefore beware that i did not call it a release candidate lightly. It is possible that things break using it.

If you want to test it use gem update|install --pre build-tool. Then make a backup of your $HOME/.build-tool folder and remove all *.db files in that folder. The last step is to switch your recipe to the branch build-tool-0.6.

  1. $ cd $HOME/.build-tool/recipe/kde
  2. $ git checkout origin/build-tool-0.6

New Features

Command: recipe edit

This command makes it easier to edit the recipe override file. It either opens a editor for the file or a file browser for the directory with the file. It uses xdg-open to do it.

Command: module cleanup

The command helps in removing the build and source directory of a module. Be careful when using it because you could lose unpushed / uncommitted changes if you do. Use on your own risk.

Keep in mind that ...read more...

Sysadmin needs help with bugzilla installation.

System & Utilities

bugs.kde.org is our primary bug tracker for many KDE applications. Unfortunately the installation we have is dated. We need to upgrade it to a newer version. But we lack the human resources to do this.

Upgrading is a bit harder than usual, because KDE has made modifications to it. We have a wizard guiding people for example. That code probably needs some polishing to work on a newer version.

What we need is:

  • someone who is not afraid of big databases
  • someone with knowledge of perl
  • someone who has experience with bugzilla and its templating engine.

That’s all :) Ideally we would like a group of people taking on this task, it’s a bit to much for one person probably. Of course the regular sysadmin team will provide support to facilitate the upgrade.

Please mail us at sysadmin@kde.org if you are interested! You know: Many hands make light work!

Submerged on Koh Tao

Dived Japanese Garden and White Rock yesterday, after refreshing my Scuba diving skills. I’m doing that at New Heaven Diving on Koh Tao, Thailand, a smallness diving operation who do a lot of work in marine life conservancy. I really dig their regular reef cleanup efforts, and their mission to turn more diving schools into marine life conservancy agents. In the process of experiencing the fantastic underwater world, it gives a lot of background to environmental (and underlying socio-economical) problems.

Among yesterday’s highlights were a blue-spotted stingray, porcupine fish, trigger fish, various scorpionfish and thousands of other cute and sometimes curious sea creatures.

I’ve also started using my underwater camera with so far very promising results. I need to work a bit on handling of the cam, but over the course of today’s photos, I am quite thrilled of the results after about just one hour of diving with it. ...read more...

openSUSE Travel Support Program

System & Utilities

Heya all!

There is an exciting piece of last night... There is now a community-led openSUSE Travel Support Program!

by phishtitz on Flickr

This is something I've wanted to do since the day I became community manager for openSUSE. I've always believed that the budget I had in SUSE should be used for the openSUSE community. Initially, that meant that I moved money from the sponsoring of conferences to supporting openSUSE people going to conferences as well as providing them with goodies like DVD's, openSUSE beer, flyers and t-shirts.

But one thing never felt entirely right: who am I to decide on sponsorship for travel? I think that that is something the community should decide. So for a long time I have been discussing how to do this with a number of people including Bryen in his former role of Marketing team lead, the openSUSE Board, Andreas Jaeger and a number ...read more...

Of painting less

System & Utilities

It has passed quite some time since my last blog post about optimizing KWin’s performance, so I felt the need to write a new one :) In the meantime KDE SC 4.8 including KWin 4.8 got released with all the features I had described in that blog post, but there are already new optimizations that have landed in the kde-workspace git repository, which I just want to explain shortly:

  • The first thing isn’t even new, it is already part of KWin 4.8 :) It is a window property called _NET_WM_OPAQUE_REGION that allows an application with a translucent window to give the window manager a hint which parts of a window are still opaque. Hence KWin has more room for optimizations. It is part of the ewmh spec and I hope that more applications/styles will adopt it. So far the only style, that I’m aware of, which is using this feature is oxygen-transparent.
  • I ported the TaskbarThumbnail, SlidingPopups and WobblyWindows effects to the ...read more...

A time for Akad-au-me?

System & Utilities

At LCA 2012 I was talking with one or two folks and the idea of a KDE miniconference at LCA 2013 came up. As I thought it was a worthwhile idea to bring Qt/KDE folks down under I sort of threw my hat in the ring to be the "local" aussie organizer for it. I say with quotes because the event in 2013 is 1000+km away from me anyway. I'll gladly defer the glory for this idea to those who suggested it save the issues and criticisms for myself.

Anyway, I thought I'd throw it out there on the k-planet, see if I should try to get onto the KDE-ev or where/if folks on the KDE side would like to further discuss the plan. My ideas involve using the official one day mini conf for KDE talks including some lightning intros to make sure everyone can put an hydrocarbon image to the @nicks and maybe using the Saturday &&|| Sunday after the event as a hackfest or two to get some stuff done. Normally the dorms ...read more...

Building innovation nodes through Free Software Communities (V): services

System & Utilities
Since this is the fifth post of the Building Innovation Nodes Through Free Software Communities, I strongly recommend you to read the previous four (I, II, III and IV)

This post will explain my ideas about what are the basic services that the initiative should provide so Local Free Software Communities (LFSC) and local player might organize activities that allow the project to be successful.

As enumerated in the second post of the series, the basic services that should be provided by the project to its members can be divided in six major areas:
  1. Administrative.
  2. Legal.
  3. Financial and accounting.
  4. Marketing and communication.
  5. Business development.
  6. Facilities maintenance and management.
The rest of the activities needed will be developed by participants, that is LFSC members, the catalyst organization or local players.

1.- Administrative

The administrative service can be divided in the following way:
  1. Administrative services related with the project itself.
  2. Administrative services targeting Local Free Software Communities.
  3. All of the above.

accessibility co-mentors needed for GSoC

System & Utilities

As announced earlier KDE will apply to become a mentoring org again for Google Summer of Code in 2012. We decided to focus on accessibility this round should KDE be accepted again. To make this happen KDE’s mentors need help. Most of the mentors do not have the knowledge needed to make good decisions when it comes to making our applications more accessible. We are therefor looking for co-mentors who can help them – people who either have a disability that requires changes in KDE’s software to make their life easier or people who are otherwise knowledgeable in the area. These co-mentors would not have to do any of the mentoring on the coding side but instead advice the student and main mentor on non-coding parts. Does that sound like something you can help with? Then please send an email to kde-soc-mentor@kde.org and introduce yourself and how you could help. Please also pass this on to anyone you think might be a good fit.

AppMenu Runner, meet the KDE HUD

System & Utilities

A few days ago Mark Shuttleworth announced the HUD menu, a  Unity dialog that lets you trigger menu actions in the focused application like:

  • look for bookmarks,
  • change your IM status
  • execute an action contained in the menu bar.
This kind of features as well of how they are executed may sound familiar to you dear Plasma Worksapce user… Exactly! I’m referring to our beloved KRunner!

KRunner can do a lot of stuff in both global and active application scope (though it tends to offer more global features) , just to mention a few: Math, Bookmarks, Files, Calendar, Contacts, Emails, Devices, Change IM Status, Recent documents…

I have to say that I’m glad to see Unity going into this direction since it is something that we (KDE Community) have believe in for years, so having Canonical and its designer team walking into the same direction may indicate that we are not wrong or at least we are not the only ones mistaken icon smile AppMenu <a href= ...read more...

FOSDEM: Green Beer, Open Advice and more Cool Stuff™

System & Utilities

Last weekend was FOSDEM and it was a blast! Camila's first and I get that she didn't look forward to it that much - we had some trouble on the way there. As I'm now just on the way to the airport to pick her up (she had a meet-up with some KolabSys people) I dunno if she changed her mind but I bet she did. If only because she got some Brazilian beans from Izabel Valverde ;-)

For me it was the usual - there was little visiting of talks for me. Seriously, 200 hours of talks in 2 days? Attempting to visit the interesting ones just leads to frustration so I've given up on that. There are just too many people to talk to, too much beer to drink and sell and little catch-ups to have. FOSDEM needs to become a week-long event. Seriously.

A cool highlight of FOSDEM was of course ...read more...

changes in Kubuntu

System & Utilities

I’ve been running Kubuntu ever since I decided to switch to Linux on my computers. Kubuntu is what got me hooked on KDE’s software. I was on it’s council for 2 years. It has a special place in my Free Software world.

At FOSDEM I had a long chat with Jonathan. He told me that he’ll no longer be able to work full-time on Kubuntu soon. This was sad news because I know how much it means to him.  For more details read his blog. While this is sad it is also good news. It clarifies Canonical’s position and gives the team behind Kubuntu more power.

I’d like to thank Canonical for sponsoring Jonathan for the past years. It was important for Kubuntu and for KDE. Kubuntu is important for KDE because a diverse distro eco-system is vital for us. Let this be a much-needed wake-up call and take it into our hands.

Hop over to #kubuntu-devel on freenode and see where you can help out for the next cycle.

DSL connections in Plasma NM

System & Utilities

One of the things I would like to have working well in Plasma NM is DSL support. Unfortunatelly, I do not have easy access to any DSL provider so I cannot test the current support for DSL in Plasma NM. I do not even know if the support really works. I asked if it works in the bug entry about DSL support and only one person has answered saying it works so I assumed it does work.

Last week I was surffing the web and stumbled accross this post in a Brazilian forum (it is Brazilian Portuguese) explaining how to set up a DSL connection in Plasma NM.
