A circle closes…

System & Utilities

At Desktop Summit 2011 in Berlin I did my first presentation on Wayland and presented the idea of Wayland to the KDE community and explained to the KDE community how we are going to port to Wayland. This year at QtCon in Berlin I was finally able to tell the KDE community that the port is finished and that our code is ready for testing.

In 2011 I used a half hour slot to mostly present the differences between X11 and Wayland and why we want Wayland. In addition I presented some of the to be expected porting steps and what we will have in the end. This year I only used a 10 min lightning talk slot to give the community an update on the work done the last year.

(Watch video on youtube, my talk starts at 15:04)

Of course the work on Wayland is not yet finished and Wayland is not yet fully ready for use. There are missing features and there must be bugs (new code base, etc.). But we are in ...read more...

Akonadi/KMail issues on Tumbleweed?

System & Utilities
So if you, like me, have experienced how smoothly Akonadi deals with crashes and think it is still annoying, there's a solution. The problem is caused by Xapian which creates some nice backtraces but until it is fixed you are stuck with a crash every ~minute.

The solution is in this email from Christian Boltz:

I created a repo with the previous version of libxapian, and akonadi-* and baloo linkpac'd from Factory (so rebuilt against the old libxapian): https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:cboltz:branches:openSUSE:Factory

Packages at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cboltz:/branches:/openSUSE:/Factory/standard/

Since I installed these packages (using zypper dup --from), I didn't see any akonadi crashes.

If someone wants to use the fixed packages _now_: I'll keep the repo as long as it's useful for me ;-) -> this is clearly caused by the libxapian update (libxapian22 -> libxapian30)

In other words, you fix it this way:

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cboltz:/branches:/openSUSE:/Factory/standard akonadi-fix
zypper ref
zypper lr
Now find the number of the new repository (akonadi-fix) and:
zypper dup --from 4
(where 4 is ...read more...

GSoC Report - Wrapping up GSoC 2016

System & Utilities
That’s it. After a combined total of 217 git commits, 6,202 lines of code added, and 4,167 lines of code deleted, GSoC 2016 is finally over.

These twelve weeks of programming have been a very enriching experience for me and making this project has taught me a lot about production quality software development. Little did I know that a small project I had put together in a 6 hour session of messing around with Qt would lead to something as big as this!

There have been many memorable moments throughout my coding period for the GSoC - such as the first time I got an ioslave to install correctly, to writing its “Hello World” equivalent, and getting a basic implementation of the project up and running by doing a series of dirty hacks with Dolphin’s code. There were also times when I was so frustrated with debugging ...read more...

Kdenlive in Berlin

System & Utilities

Kdenlive logo
Kdenlive 16.08.0 was released a few weeks ago and we are now preparing the bugfix 16.08.1 release that will be tagged on the 5th of September.
In the recent weeks I have not been able to spend much time on Kdenlive. Hopefully, in a few days I will be in Berlin for Akademy, which is always a great opportunity to move forwards. For everyone interested in discovering Kdenlive, discussing about your successes or problems with it, or if you want to get involved, feel free to join the Kdenlive’s BoF session on Monday, 5th of September.

Cantor gets support of Julia language

System & Utilities
You may noticed GSoC 2016 is about to over and I'm glad to share the results of my work with the KDE and worldwide open-source community. Google sponsored program is a very good stimulus to get into the open-source development. Students aren't simply fixing bugs in existing software, but create new and enhance functionality of existing projects. Participants become a part of community by working together with associated mentors to bring you the best of they can do during this short period of summer.

My project was to implement Julia backend for the Cantor -- free software mathematics application for scientific statistics and analysis, part of KDE Edu project. What is Julia and why you need it? If you studies or maybe work is closely connected with mathematics computations, words like Matlab, R, Python already have bothered your ears. You won't use such fundamental languages like C/C++/Pascal/Fortran, as you need to get from idea to working prototype as fast as possible forgetting ...read more...

#31: GSoC with KDE Now – 9

System & Utilities

Hey ! I’m making KDE Now, an application for the Plasma Desktop. It would help the user see important stuff from his email, on a plasmoid. It’s similar to what Google Now does on Android. To know more, click here.

Roughly three weeks have passed since I last blogged about my project. School started and it was tough finding time for everything let alone blogging. This year’s Summer of Code is reaching it’s end and I have much to talk about this time around. In the end I also have a surprise for you.

To start with, I worked on the Database I talked about earlier. Now all plugins save their maps into a Sqlite database and when the daemon runs, it finds these maps and prepares to load it into a card. There’s a catch here though, as I will have to pass the maps over to D-Bus and there are synchronizations issues. There’s still  a way to solve it but that involves editing an auto generated xml file manually. We wish to avoid this manual editing ...read more...

My experiences with SOCIS 2016

System & Utilities

Hello dear readers!

This post is a small synopsis of my experiences so far as a student in this years Summer of Code in Space, where I shall recount the whole adventure of integrating Sentinel-2 data into Marble Virtual Globe.

Sentinel-2 data.

So what exactly is this data, and why is it important to us?

Well, Copernicus is the worlds largest single earth observation programme directed by the European Commission in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA). ESA is currently developing seven missions under the Sentinel programme. Among these is Sentinel-2, which provides high-resolution optical images, which  is on one hand of interest to the users of Marble and the scientific community as a whole.

Our goal with this years SOCIS was to adapt this data into Marble. Since Marble has quite the track record of being used ...read more...

Good Way to Share Configurations Between C++ / QML?

System & Utilities

On Qt there’s the QSettings, while it has a lot of issues, it works well for c++ related code, but what if you wanted to also use the config for a QML Based application, that shares the C++ core with a Qt Widget based application? I’m on this dilema right now with subsurface and I want to hear a word of advise. For the few that don’t know yet, Subsurface is a dive logging application started by Linus Torvalds a few years ago, and that I stepped in to take care about the interface, which was rewritten mainly in Qt, but the Core is still in C.

So we have a C-based struct that has all the preferences, which I cannot use QSettings, because the code is in C, at the same time, Qt-Widgets based interface uses QSettings to store / restore the preferences and fill the c-based prefs struct, and now we also have the QML Android application, that cannot use the QSettings because it’s not easily exported to QML engine. I know that there is already a “Settings” ...read more...

Time sure passes fast when you are enjoying something. And so, another week has passed and I’m back with another status update. Things look very very good from here on. At least, not until we decide to change something drastic that I hadn’t proposed earlier😄.

Last week was rough. I was struggling with viral fever and throat infection for the better part of the week. Plus I had some other things to attend to. Nonetheless, I managed to devote the needed time on my project. I managed to create the UI of the Flight and Restaurant cards. They look good and work as expected (the dynamically loading up of things and all)

System Settings help needed

System & Utilities

First of all I need help, but before you help me I’d like to show you what a user without development skills can do to make plasma better.

I already post about the system settings redesign and cause developer are busy with other tasks, I reviewed the existing modules and update them to fit (more) our vision. I know it’s not how I would prefere in the end but I did the changes without development skills (no compiling, no new code). I use qt-creator for edit the ui files and play around with qml.

Windows version of LabPlot is comming (soon)

System & Utilities

We are comming close to the next release of LabPlot with a lot of new features. The development for the next release is finished and we’re doing some final testing, improving the documentation, checking the issues reported by code analysis tools, etc. As always, we’ll write about this a dedicated and detailed release announcement soon. Today, as a small teaser for what will come soon we just want to share some information about what many people were already asking for – Windows port of LabPlot:

LabPlot on Windows

On the screenshot (taken on Windows7) you see also some new features like “Fourier transformation” and “Fourier Filter” – more on this later. Starting with the next release, v2.3.0, we’ll provide installers for Windows (32bit and 64bit) and we hope to provide a Mac port of LabPlot in the near future, too.

While porting LabPlot to Windows we benefited a lot from the community and the exprience of other KDE projects. Bringing KDE Software to other platforms like ...read more...

Multi-screen woes in Plasma 5.7

System & Utilities

With Plasma 5.7 we promised improved multi-screen support. While we achieved that, some users are still experiencing issues. This is unfortunate and our users have all the reasons to be disappointed with us. We are working very hard to fix the issues which have been reported to us since the release.

But there are many situations where users blame us for issues not under our control. With this blog post I want to describe some of the problems we got reported and explain them.

Display hardware key not working

In Bug 365147 a user reported that the notebook hardware key does not work. This is rather surprising as our code of course supports the key and it is working on the systems we developers have. We asked the user to run xev and report back what it prints when pressing the key. It turns out it sends Windows+P which is used since Windows 7. That is a rather unfortunate situation and I can only conclude that the hardware is broken. More information on this topic by Matthew ...read more...

The desktop package provides desktop environment detection and resource opening support for a selection of common and standardised desktop environments. Currently, in Python's standard library, there is apparently no coherent, cross-platform way of getting the user's environment to "open" files or resources when requested by a Python program.

Qt 5.7 Consolidates Open Source, Commercial Versions Under New Licensing

The Qt Company has released a new version of its namesake C++ cross-platform app dev tool, featuring new licensing that consolidates the open source and commercial versions of its Qt for Application Development offering. "Qt is being developed as an open source project, The Qt Company is fully committed to this, and in addition, the agreement with the KDE Free Qt Foundation legally ensures this.

Doxyqml 0.3.0 released

System & Utilities

The master branch of Doxyqml, a QML input filter for Doxygen, had been waiting for a release for a long time. Olivier Churlaud, the new KApidox hero, reported that it did not work with Python 3 and submitted a patch to fix this. I integrated his patch, fixed a few other things, set up Travis to test future commits and finally released Doxyqml 0.3.0, featuring the following changes:

  • Port to Python 3 (Olivier Churlaud, Aurélien Gâteau)
  • Skip directory imports (Aurélien Gâteau)
  • Support comment after class declaration (Cédric Cabessa)
  • Find qmldir for relative paths (Mathias Hasselmann)
  • Read import statements to help base class lookup (Mathias Hasselmann)
  • Generate qualified component names (Mathias Hasselmann)
  • Handle singleton pragmas (Mathias Hasselmann)

Note that this new version is Python 3 only, I think it is safe to assume that Python 3 is widespread enough nowadays that this should not be a problem.

Working on KDevelop and KDE on Windows in Randa

Working on KDevelop and KDE on Windows in Randa

Working on KDevelop and KDE on Windows in Randa

Right now, around 40 developers are working together on bringing KDE to other platforms in Randa (Switzerland) for an entire week.

I just arrived Sunday evening, and we immediately started with discussions around KDE on different platforms. Not much coding has happened yesterday evening yet, but I at least managed to work-around a compiler bug of GCC 4.8 showing up in the KDevelop code base.

My plans for this week are as follows:

  • Preparing the KDevelop 5.0 release (fixing release blockers)
  • Introduce the Windows CI for KDE (means: adding a Jenkins Windows slave to build.kde.org, making it produce useful results)
  • Generally be a source of help for people trying to port their application to Windows
  • Plus upstreaming patches I've been too lazy to fix up and push yet (hint: https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/124905/, etc.)

If you'd like to see what all the KDE people are working on, here's a work ...read more...

Debian:

For this I was able to come up with a patch for kconfig_compiler to encode generated files to utf-8.

This has been approved and I will be pushing it as soon as I patch the qt5 frameworks version.

WIP this has been a steep learning curve, according to the notes it was an easy embedded kernel version, that was not the case! After grueling hours of
trying to sort out randomness in debug output I finally narrowed it down to cases where QStringLiteral was used and there were non letter characters eg. (” <") These were causing debug symbols to generate with ( lambda() ) which caused unreproducible symbol/debug files. It is now a case of fixing all of these in the code to use QString::fromUtf8 seems to fix this. I am working on a mega patch for upstream and it should be ready early in the week.

Finally: Umbrello works on MsWindows

System & Utilities

One of the tasks in my Google Summer of Code project was build Umbrello using KF5 in MsWindows and see if had any problems.

I spend two weeks in this task, some days I get blocked about Python issues that you can see in my previous post here.

However, when I fix those issues and configured the cmake to find the KF5 and Qt5 libs manually inside the project on QtCreator, Umbrello build fine without any compilation errors.

Screenshot_20160606_122819

But, I get an error about missing DLL’s, that after a little research I discover that the error was about the missing path to D:/kderoot/bin on MsWindows %PATH%.

After this solved, Umbrello opened fine:

GSoC Update 1: The Beginning

System & Utilities
I have officially started my GSoC project under the mentorship of Boudhayan Gupta and Pinak Ahuja.

The project idea's implementation has undergone some changes from what I proposed. While the essence of the project is the same, it will now no longer be dependent on Baloo and xattr. Instead, it will use a QList to hold a list of staged files with a plugin to kiod. My next milestone before the mid-term evaluation is to implement this in a KIO slave which will be compatible with the whole suite of KDE applications.

Both, I work full-time as an artist right now and hope to continue so!

What genre(s) do you work in?

Is furry a genre? I practice my own styles to draw animals and furries – luckily this is where the most demand for my work is as well. But I’ve also drawn more cartoony & simplified styles for children’s books.

SupernovaWhose work inspires you most — who are your role models as an artist?

My mom draws really well, she got me ...read more...
