My first Mozilla contributions

System & Utilities

As of beginning of December I started contributing to the Mozilla community… I must say amazing people and amazing environment.

I was invited by Josh Matthews and David W. Boswell to a Mozillians meeting. The first task I took upon myself was getting new contributors mentioned with every release. With the help of the others I went around pinging people and a couple of days later we reached the consensus that we will be linking to a blog post on http://blog.mozilla.org/community/category/spotlight/ from the release note with every release.

We will be using a set of premature scripts I am working on to detect new contributors to a release as well as the contribution rate (code and bugs which is inspired by my GNOME fellow Andre Klapper). Those can be found https://github.com/seiflotfy/mozcctools (nothing special they just spit out JSON stats, will automate them this weekend).

And last but not least. After an interesting call with the super dad himself, Mike Hoye, I took a challenge upon myself to hack a tool that does the following:

Zeitgeist 1.0 almost there (call for hackers)

System & Utilities

So after 4 years of development Zeitgeist is reaching 1.0. The Zeitgeist team has reached a big goal/milestone :D

What’s new?

  1. New libzeitgeist2: instead of libzeitgeist which was developed and hosted on Launchpad now reuse and expose our own internal Vala components. When comparing libzeitgeist2 to libzeitgeist we can see over 65% less code (thanks to Vala) with 90% compatibilty with libzeitgeist. (libqzeitgeist not affected)
  2. GObject Introspection support
  3. Faster performance
    • Testing with 100k events DB here are some plots, those are peromances of synapse and standard time based queries where the yellow bars are 0.9.5 release and green bars represent “master”. Shorter bars are better.
    • synapse_unlimited timerange_always timerange_interval
  4. Smaller DB size: With a very small modification to the main table (primary keys), SQlite created some automatic indices that cover what we need so now instead of 34 indices we only need 25.
  5. Lots of bug fixes
  6. ...read more...

Search your playlist – Plasma-Mediacenter

System & Utilities

Till last week or 2 I was surfing through calligra code base. Shantanu asked me share my love for Plasma-mediacenter and hence it bubbled up with this post. I wanted this post as a Christmas gift to PMC(Plasma-mediacenter) users. But then due to my laziness and some foo factors it delayed.

PMC has support for playlist. Lets see how I added the search option for playlist. I wrote a model to filter the search in the playlist, named FilterPlaylistModel. FilterPlaylistModel inherits the QSortFilterProxyModel. And the key method of FilterPlaylistModel is filterAcceptRow. filterAcceptRow method will help us to filter out the rows which didn’t matched with string in the search box. Playlist.qml uses playlistModel which is already in use. I wanted to add my FilterPlaylistModel to Playlist.qml. This was accomplished by adding a Q_PROPERTY in FilterPlaylistModel. Created a sourcePlaylistModel of type QObject. Added the read, write and notify options. I registered the FilterPlaylistModel in mainwindow.cpp. Now here is the tricky part, which took me some time to understand. Updated the model of Playlist.qml to:

model: MediaCenterComponents.FilterPlaylistModel ...read more...

We are very happy to announce the first testing release of Plasma Active for Nexus 7. Plasma Active, in a nutshell, is a Linux distribution (based on Mer as a core) that is specifically optimized for tablet computers.

Tuomas Kulve and me had been working on the Mer “hardware-adaptation” for Nexus 7 that enables to run Mer-based distributions like Plasma Active on the Nexus 7.

Impressed by Calligra compatibility with Microsoft Office

System & Utilities

Blog Tags:

I'm using Microsoft Office quite a lot at work, and I must confess it is a very efficient. Not only because I'm used to it, but also because it allows creating nice looking content extremely fast, and is feature wise more complete than its competitors. That being said, Office remains a closed product, without proper support for Open Document Formats.

As soon as I'm leaving the office I switch to Archlinux, and use LibreOffice or Calligra : even if less complete or efficient than Office, they are Open Source and support Open Document Formats. They are totally suitable for my personal usage, where I do not need to create striking Presentations or complex Pivot Tables and graphics.

Being a bit bored between the Christmas and New Year's Eve frenzies, I loaded a (not too) complex presentation I made in Powerpoint into LibreOffice ...read more...

My personal KDEPIM upgrade (again): laptop

System & Utilities

One year after my last blog post on this topic I encountered some minor difficulties with combining KDEPIM-4.4 (i.e. kmail1) and the KDE 4.10 betas. These difficulties are fixed now, and the combination seems to work fine again. Anyway, I became curious about the level of stability of Akonadi-based kmail2 once more. After all, I've been running it continuously over the year on my office desktop with a constant-on fast internet connection, and that works quite well. So, I gave it a fresh try on my laptop too. I deleted my Akonadi configuration and cache, switched to Akonadi mysql backend, updated kmail and the rest of KDEPIM without migrating to 4.9.4, and re-added my IMAP account from scratch (with "Enable offline mode"). The overall use case description is "laptop with large amount of cached files from IMAP account, fluctuating internet connectivity". Now, here are my impressions...

  • Reaction time is occasionally sluggish, but overall OK.
  • The progress indicator behaves a bit odd, it checks the mail folders in seemingly random order and only knows 0% and 100% completion. ...read more...

Testing KScreen packages available for openSUSE

System & Utilities

Yesterday Alex Fiestas showed on his blog a video of a recent development version of the KScreen library, created to handle easily multiple monitor setups in KDE, almost in an “automagic” way. As this is a project where configurations and setups are highly heterogeneous, a lot of testing is required to ensure things work reliably.

Of course, you cannot ask a developer to have all sorts of screen combinations, but remember one of the strengths of FOSS: “many eyes make bugs shallow”. And that’s why the KDE team prepared testing packages for KScreen for openSUSE users.

Before you jump to the repository, bear in mind that these packages are for testing and bug reporting purposes. They can potentially cause unwanted effects, connect your displays to some random alien homeland, make your house blow up, and so on.

If you are still daring, you can find them in the KDE:Unstable:Playground repository. Install both the libkscreen and kscreen packages, and you’ll see a new entry in System Settings when you go to the monitor configuration ...read more...

The Nexus 7: My views

System & Utilities

Before I start , I must make it clear that it is not an in depth review of Nexus 7, you would find a lot of those on the internet. I am just narrating my own experience from an Indian’s point of view , which a lot of people should find useful.

First of all, I am a final year undergraduate and was thinking of buying a tablet for the last 6-8 months or so. Earlier I wanted to buy the Micromax Funbook but then I thought that if I am buying a tablet, I should go for a good one, at least a decent one. I am not saying that the Micromax Funbook series is bad, they offer a great value for money but unless you are in dire need of a tablet and have a 7-8 K budget limit, I wouldn’t advise you to buy it.

I started checking out the Nexus 7 reviews and found them pretty great. Sure it had some cons, but all of those were fine with me. It didn’t have a back camera ...read more...

KDAB contributions to Qt 5.0 (part 1)

System & Utilities

Yesterday Qt 5.0.0 was released. It is the culmination of huge amounts of work since the announcement of and start of Qt 5′s development. This is the first major release of Qt since the launch of open governance in Autumn 2011, when it became much easier for external individuals and companies to contribute to Qt in terms of code submissions, code reviews, design, and maintenance.

As KDAB benefits from a successful Qt, we have made investments to contribute to the long-term health of the frameworks. There are over 1100 commits from KDAB in the qtbase git repository alone, and many others in other Qt repositories. Excluding individual contributors, we have consistently been the next biggest contributor, second only to the owners of Qt (Nokia/Digia). We have been fixing bugs, implementing wishes from the JIRA tracker, designing writing and testing new features, implementing platform support, reviewing other contributors’ code and participating in discussions around the project.

A new blog series here will detail some ...read more...

The road towards KWin on Qt 5

System & Utilities

The last three weeks I have been on vacations which explains the lack of blog posts. My batteries are fully recharged to work on KWin full time starting from January thanks to Blue Systems.

By pure chance I stayed close to the San Francisco Bay Area which allowed me to go to the Qt Developer Days in Santa Clara. It was great to see all the KDE and Qt people again and it was totally worth going there. I’m now looking forward to some great Qt technology coming up with Qt 5 (congrats to the release!) and I’m very very glad that ICS and KDAB organized the Dev Days and showed everyone that Qt has a bright future.

For me the conference was very valuable as I had the chance to discuss a few things about the next versions of our KDE workspaces with Aaron and David. And even if we do not yet have plans for a KDE workspaces release based on Qt 5 and KF 5 it became clear to me that my work for the 4.11 cycle ...read more...

Krita Sketch is: Colourful

System & Utilities

A quick recap of the main topic: My employer, KO GmbH, has been working on a touch version of Krita, called Krita Sketch, over the last few months, and has finally made the first release! So, i'm doing a bit of writing, talking about some of the work i've been doing as a part of this project. (you should also read the dot article, because it's good and has shiny ;) )

In the previous instalment i wrote about rounded corners, and mentioned there was something else in Krita Sketch which was round. Those who use Krita will have already encountered the colour wheel that's used to select colours in the application, and this is a very popular feature with the target audience, so of course we need it in Krita Sketch as well. This entry discusses the implementation of that element

About Antiquated Metaphors in Icons

System & Utilities

Antiquated metaphors in icons can work better than modern, but complicated ones. This can be shown on the example of the ‘save’ icon.

A lot of the Tango and Oxygen icons that are used in the standard tool bar in LibreOffice Writer are based on the same metaphor. From the icons that differ in metaphor, the icons used for ‘Saving a document’ are especially interesting. This is one result of the large scale icon test of LibreOffice Writer icons (read about the methodology of testing icons).

In our work with different projects we have often been asked why antiquated metaphors are still used in icon design. Examples of these antiquated icons could be the shiny metal container representing a database or the floppy disc for saving data. Younger people might not even have seen either of the originals.

Use a floppy disc to represent ‘save’

As the Oxygen icon used for saving is a floppy disc, ...read more...

System & Utilities

So while everybody is busy celebrating the release of Qt 5 (Congratulations!) Let me announce a much more modest release: Homerun 0.1.1.

This new version comes with one new feature: the ability to change the launcher icon, and a few fixes:

  • Fix "halt" action performing "log out" instead
  • Fix memory leak when browsing folders
  • Fix rootUrl appearing in PathModel if it did not end with a slash
  • Fix crash when trying to add a tab to an empty model
  • Fix crash if user tries to configure tabs while not on start page
  • Fix category and website fields in desktop files

You can download the source from download.kde.org. Packages should get updated soon.

My first year at BlueSystems

System & Utilities

About one year ago, the 1st December 2012 I graduated, and by the same dates I started working for BlueSystems. Since we usually consider year periods like achievements, I thought it was a good occasion for a flashback, so there we go!

blue systems logo

  • The KDE GTK Config KCM was my first assignment. It was something new for me but still interesting otherwise. I was more used to work into making applications, there I worked right into helping integrate an important part of the software we have available to KDE. I think it was successful in the sense that many people are starting to take advantage of it and hopefully enjoying the possibility to fully customize the look of all applications, haven’t you tried it already?

How to make Dolphin crash less, and other changes in KDE 4.9.4

System & Utilities

A few weeks ago, I woke up in the middle of the night and could not sleep (fortunately, this happens very rarely). I took the advice that I once read, got up and tried to do something useful. I checked my e-mail and found a new bug report about a random crash that had been reported many times before, but whose cause had always been a mystery. Therefore, I was quite excited when I saw that this report contained step-by-step instructions to reproduce the crash. Once I could use GDB and Valgrind to investigate the crash, fixing it was easy (while handling events, never ever delete a QObject unless you are 100% sure that no event is waiting to be delivered to that object). Many thanks to G. Christ for making this fix possible!

In other news, David Faure fixed a bug in KDirLister that sometimes caused Dolphin to not notice changes in the current directory. This bug had been discussed intensively in Dolphin’s forum, and this discussion actually led to the discovery of a reliable way ...read more...

Kids' size KDE

System & Utilities

More than a year ago I started an experiment: to bring KDE Education to the kids in Kindergarten.
Now my son was starting exactly at the same time his own adventure in Kindergarten, so I jump at the opportunity and suggest to the educators to have a period of testing. They accepted and I installed a Kubuntu 11.10 on an old PC, the Kindergarten bought a 22" Touchscreen, and I also installed the first alfa version of Pairs (selfcompiled) that I was working on.

Now, I am computer scientist, so to comply to the scientific method I needed:

1- an Hypotheses: KDE Edu is good for children
2- an Experiment: give the children a computer and KDE Edu
3- a Thesis that tells me if the hypotheses is right or not.

So after two months of testing, I asked the educators to tell me what was the value of this computer. I was actually surprised to see that even the skeptical educator, not so "into" computers, had a really ...read more...

Guest post: Google Code-in experience #4 (Thomas)

System & Utilities

KDE is once again taking part in Google Code-in this year, a contest to bring 13 to 17 year-olds closer to Free Software. I asked some of our students to write about their experience with KDE. Here’s the fourth one by Thomas.

Google Code-In 2012 marks the first time in which I have participated in the Code-In or any similar program. Having some experience with smaller organizations and personal development, I did not know what to expect, but I signed up ready to learn and be challenged. Less than two weeks into the program I have completed two tasks (and now a third!) with KDE. More specifically, I have worked with the team behind ownCloud, a personal cloud
service, to help test and design new features for an upcoming release.

My first task was to help test and debug a RSS reader for ownCloud that was actually developed as part of this year?s Google Summer of Code program. The News app runs within the ownCloud instance and allows for each user to have their own RSS reader ...read more...

Workaround for vpn problem with NetworkManager

System & Utilities

Some people have approached me about problems to activate vpn connections using Plasma NM. I have just found a workaround that enables vpnc (Cisco VPN) connections to work: just remove the /usr/libexec/nm-vpnc-auth-dialog file that comes with networkmanager-vpnc package. Yeah, that sounds strange but it works here. That seems an upstream problem, maybe that dialog is not working properly and yet blocking the dialog from Plasma NM. Do the same for the other vpn types, the workaround should work for them too.

Project Neon updates and early St. Nicholas’ Day

System & Utilities

It’s been a while since my last post, which is mostly because not much has happenend in neon lately as it’s running mostly by itself and life is keeping me busy. I originally intended to write a post when I’m done with the python bindings, but it turnes out that configuring SIP and dbus right takes more time than I could spare for neon lately. So here goes:

  • Builds for Kubuntu Raring are up, so enjoy your daily dose of KDE on the dev release!
  • Precise builds will be kept running until 4.10 RC1, after that please upgrade to Quantal if you wish to use neon.
  • Following that, the VM images are now based on Quantal.
  • Sadly not much progress on the python bindings. All of us are rather short on time lately thanks to kubuntu and real life.

Simon 0.4: Beta 2 Update

The second beta of Simon was scheduled for today but since the last couple of weeks were extremely busy for me and other core contributers to Simon, we simply don't have enough changes that would justify another release right now.

Therefore, I have decided to move the release of the second beta to Sunday, December 9th.
Everything else, most importantly the release date of 0.4.0, stays the same.

Please do keep reporting bugs in the mean time - I am sure there are lots of them and yet we only received two reports since the first beta. Come on, guys, you can do better than that!

quicky update on window grouping

System & Utilities

I posted a couple of blog entries the other week about how to show grouping in the task bar. The feedback was fantastic and we now have a "winner", at least for 4.10.

Many noted that knowing there is a group of windows just by glancing at the task bar is important to them. Very, very few find value in the little number, however. So putting it all together, in 4.10 a small arrow will be shown drawn over the window icon when there is a group, as is seen in many other dock apps. This preserves the most useful information while also limiting visual noise, creating a more compact layout in the window listing and finding consistency with other implementations out there in the wild.

As a bonus, the arrow is no longer the (in my opinion) ugly black thing that was specific to the window list but the standard arrow used throughout the rest of the Plasma workspace interface.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback!

Bonus time! ;) A curious little walk down memory lane: in ...read more...

Quickie - Qt*Gui*.js - It (Mostly) Lives :)

System & Utilities

A quick update to my previous blogs about trying to get Qt ported over to the wonderful Emscripten, so that a Qt + C++ app can be compiled to Javascript and HTML5, and so run in a browser. When last we met, I had QtCore ported, and was starting to look at making QtGui work, using QWS. I quote:

Qt's QWS, at a cursory glance, seems like it does a *huge* amount of stuff for you, mainly leaving the tasks of flushing pixels to screen (using Canvas's "putImageData" method, in this case) and providing it with mouse and key events. I'm sure that there's a whole host of little devils lurking in the details, though :)
I was right on both counts - QWS is awesome, and fundamentally there is very little that one needs to do, but I certainly have been beset my devils along the way :) I'm pleased to report that I've (mostly) got it working, with some caveats.
