openSUSE 12.3 installer formatting encrypted devices

System & Utilities

Hi, this morning I wanted to replace my openSUSE 12.2 by openSUSE 12.3 doing a fresh installation from a USB-stick (using a recent image of a KDE-live system). I am using an encrypted partition to store the volumes of a LVM-volume group (root, home and swap). root should get reformatted (from btrfs back to ext4), but of course I chose to keep my home-partition, it should get reused without being formatted. I entered this setup in the graphical installation program (YaST installer). I had done that before, quite often, what should go wrong? I went on not noticing the entry “Set up encrypted DM device on /dev/sda2”. What does that mean? Will it create some entries in configuration files for handling the encrypted device? No, it means that it will try to reformat the entire encrypted partition using “cryptsetup luksFormat” thus wiping out all volumes stored there although it was only told to format a single volume. Of course my last backup was quite old… but I was lucky: When reinstalling I always mount my home-partition–for accessing my files more...

Short Tip: Check configured virtual hosts in Apache

System & Utilities

Whenever you have to debug virtual host setups in Apache, checking the actual running virtual host configuration is a good first step. This can be done with the -S option used on the Apache binary: It lists all running virtual hosts and performs a syntax check.

On Fedora, RHEL, CentOS the Apache binary can be found on /usr/sbin/httpd:

# /usr/sbin/httpd -S
VirtualHost configuration: (/etc/httpd/conf.d/me.conf:5) (/etc/httpd/conf.d/others.conf:1) (/etc/httpd/conf.d/others.conf:38)
Syntax OK

On Debian systems the call is almost the same, you just have to source the environment variables upfront, and the binary has a different name for historical reasons:

# source /etc/apache2/envvars
# /usr/sbin/apache2 -S
VirtualHost configuration: (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/me.conf:5) (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/others.conf:1) (/etc/apache2/sites-enabled/others.conf:38)
Syntax OK

you might run into an error about user names, in such cases it is helpful to call upfront.

Dolphin bugs fixed in March 2013

System & Utilities

Here is a summary of the bug fixes that Dolphin users who upgrade to last week’s release can benefit from:

  • Bug 288824: Fix the problem that no custom icons are shown for folders which are accessed via NFS and some other file systems. See git commit 6369b556 for the infrastructure in kdelibs, and commit b8c9aa55 for the patch that makes Dolphin use it.
  • Bug 316335: Make sure that children of expanded directories are removed from the  model if the parent is collapsed, and prevent that they reappear when the filter is removed. See git commit acec0e65, review request 109343.
  • Bug 315619: Do not skip rows in Details View when scrolling by clicking the empty area of the scroll bar. See git commit 6ba70a6f, review request 109210.
  • Bug 316615: If files with multiple types are selected, show the services for the file type ‘octet stream’ in the context menu. See git commit 4da8e6cd.
  • Bug 316016: Another kdelibs issue that caused Dolphin to not update the more...

Boot Artwork for Kubuntu 13.04

System & Utilities

At Kubuntu we value user feedback a lot and so we worked on new boot artwork that is largely based on input from previous releases.

It features not only our traditional but nevertheless excitingly awesome blue but is alltogether striving to be as subtile as possible.

Taking stuff apart

System & Utilities

Last Saturday, I took apart an old and broken laptop of mine: a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ31XN. That was once a top of the line executive laptop. I bought it in 2009 when the model had just been discontinued and superseded by a new one, so it wasn't too expensive.

The laptop had an 11" 1366x768 screen, a 1.2 ghz Core2duo, 2GB of ram and 120 GB hard drive. The reason I paid 1000 Euro for such lowly specs is that it had a weight of 1.25 kg, doing about 6 hours on a battery charge.

Impressive piece of tech

I've been wanting a new laptop since I started to bump into performance issues during 2011. 2 GB of ram is not sufficient in a time of HTML5 - there are web pages which eat several hundreds mbs of ram. And unfortunately the Linux desktop isn't getting lighter either (it's part of why I decided to help Will and Klaas with Klyde for hackweek). And I've been doing some light video more...

Reviewboard and Bugzilla mails no longer need moderation

System & Utilities

Sysadmin logo

First of all: Hi from the sysadmin team blog. From now on, sysadmin team members will use a common blogging platform for KDE sysadmin related stuff. The feed will be coming from This site will not only show blogs, but also status updates on the right and holds an easy to use link to our new shiny ticketing system.

Yes, we are moving out of bugzilla in favor of a real ticketing system. This gives a bunch of advantages, one of which will be that we can unify our todo list as mail addressed to sysadmins will end up in this system as well. Next to that we can modify fields for different topics, so we can immediately ask additional questions when you ask for a tarball to be moved to some place on the ftp-server compared to asking your irc nick when you want a irc mask. Improvement for us.

The sysadmin-site will be expanded soon with a description of all the services we offer more...

Semiotics in Usability: Guidelines for the Development of Icon Metaphors

System & Utilities

In the development of icons, the metaphor plays a vital role to ensure reliable perception and comprehension. We introduce seven guidelines that help to create a balanced set of icons with high usability.

Semiotics is the study of signs and describes the perception, comprehension and communication of symbols. In the field of computer science, semiotics is especially relevant to the design of icons. A perfect metaphor is the prerequisite to unmistakably associate a function with an image. This article sums up some principles how to create icons, which we derived from a study with more than 3000 LibreOffice users.

A lot of guide lines support designers creating icons. For example, the Microsoft Styleguide precisely defines for Aero icons how perspective, source of light, shade, saturation, size or level of detail should be like. Similar standards have been created for most projects, e.g. the LibreOffice Flat Icon Set. There are other, more generic lists that offer tips for icon creation (e.g more...

The Luminosity of Free Software, episode 10

System & Utilities

Last week went without a LofS show, sadly, due to me laying about in bed being ill after what had been a very enjoyable and blissfully peaceful Easter weekend get away. That'll teach me for having fun, right? ;) Well, I'm back and that means another episode this week. Due to my schedule this week, it will once again be on Friday but I will be returning to the "full length" format. So what will we be exploring this week?

  • Plasma Workspaces 2: Next week there is an extremely important meeting taking place in Nürnberg, Germany to devise answers to some of the remaining open questions, draft a roadmap to the first Plasma Workspaces 2 release and hack until dawn. With this event coming up, I'll take some time to explain the main changes that are coming with Plasma Workspaces 2 and how it will make your usage experience a bit better.
  • What is QML? After an interesting set of discussions recently with people about just what is QML, I thought a segment on this topic from someone more...

KDE Games gets QtQuick support!

System & Utilities

Since my last year's GSoC with porting KBreakout to QtQuick, I have been working on adding support for QtQuick to KDE Games libraries. After a few months efforts and careful reviews by David, Albert and Ian (thanks to them!) it has been finally pushed to master.

What's new

With the QtQuick support, libkdegames has two crucial additions for QML:
  1. A declarative view (KgDeclarativeView) with added bindings to KDE's convenience functions (eg, i18n() etc.) and register KDE specific paths to QML plugins; this is done with help of KDeclarative in kdelibs.
  2. A QML component for showing game's UI elements from the its SVG files, similar to what KGameRenderer provides. Just do a "import 0.1 as KgCore" and KgCore.KgItem component can be used to display elements from SVGs.
One important thing to remember here is that only the central game areas are shown in QML, rest of the parts like the main window, toolbars, menus, status bars, etc. remain as it is.

The insides

KgDeclarativeView is simply a wrapper over QDeclarativeView with support for what KDeclarative provides. There is absolutely nothing more that has been written in more...

Collaborative editing in KTE (prototype)

System & Utilities

I had a bit of spare time, so I decided I'd try to implement collaborative editing in KTextEditor, and see how far I can get in a week. That week is over now -- and this is how far I got:
Your browser does not support the video tag.

(If your browser doesn't support HTML5 video, here's a direct link)

Technical implementation

In the background, all this is based on libinfinity. There has been a KDE project in the past which attempted to build a collaborative editor on top of that protocol/library, called kobby, which is based on KTE (KTextEditor -- the thing used by kate, kwrite, kdevelop, kile, ...) too, but builds a seperate application on top of KTE (like kate or kwrite). I decided to try fixing its bugs, and turning it into a KTE plugin instead of starting from scratch. Developed together with kobby there's a library called libqinfinity which is a Qt wrapper around libinfinity (which is written in gobject-based more...

Animation in Krita: one more step!

System & Utilities

Today a new cool feature arrived in Krita development version (many thanks to Boudewijn Rempt who did it): the “LayerGroupSwitcher”.
Basically it’s just two little shortcuts (not assigned by default), that switch to next or previous group layer, hiding the previous group and showing the current one.
With this it’s much faster to work on an animation or image sequence using group layers to separate frames.

The main problem I have with this method is the lack of an automated light-table, so as a workaround for now I use a clone layer of previous/next frames inside my current group, with lower opacity and a red or blue color over it (check the screenshot for layer stack details…)

A very quick test anim to show that it works, download it here.

Writing and reading code

System & Utilities

You’ve probably heard that a developer of an established software project writes an average of 100 lines of code (loc) a day. I can say that this applies to me. So if you write 100 loc per day, how many do you read? I would estimate that the amount of time you spend on reading and understanding code is significantly more than on writing code. You probably also spend quite some time debugging code.

If you spend so much more time on reading and debugging code than writing code, shouldn’t you put more effort in writing clean and debuggable code? The Samba codebase is pretty old, more than 15 years now. I would say we have some experience with bad code and we have started to write much better and cleaner code, because we have wasted so much time trying to understand and debug code. However there is still room for improvement. Lets take a look at the following C code snippet.

if (!a) {

if (!b) {

if (!c) {
return; more...

Are you a senior KDE developer? Join openSUSE Team at SUSE

System & Utilities

openSUSE Team at SUSE is looking for a senior KDE developer that is willing to join the company to work on openSUSE distribution and customer products where KDE technologies are present.

As those of you who are closer to KDE and/or openSUSE know, Will Stephenson has been leading this area the last few years. He is now facing new professional challenges within SUSE so we are looking for somebody that coordinates the openSUSE Team efforts related with KDE together with the openSUSE community, upstream and other SUSE Teams.

Our default openSUSE desktop, KDE, is obviously a relevant piece of our puzzle. But beyond pure KDE work, the selected candidate will also work in other areas of the distribution and will play an important role as openSUSE/SUSE advocate in technical forums.

openSUSE currently ships other desktops too so it will be important for the selected candidate to drive high levels of cooperation with the openSUSE GNOME (and others) team and upstream in cross-distro development efforts.

FontForge: Rolling Type Design with No Save Using Collab

System & Utilities

FontForge has some support for collaborative type design. It's early days, but things are moving along in the right direction. In order to test things I've been looking at the python scripting support with an eye to moving control points around etc, or doing design and modification from the script and having the collab server keeping up with things. This way I can "save" the type that is being designed at certain points and compare the saved font with that I would expect the result of multiple collaborators (the previous python scripts) should be. Automated testing for the win!

So, No Save is only for the "doing" scripts. I of course want to save the current type at my leisure :)

You might be wondering what a script that creates a glyph might look like. I had to do a bit of trial and error to figure out how to use the scripting API myself. With that in mind, I might roll some of my scripts into the mainline FontForge git repo so others can enjoy the little more...

Luminosity of Free Software, Episode 9

System & Utilities

Today I will be recording the 9th episode of "Luminosity" and it will be a short episode, in part because of time constraints I'm facing today but also because I'd like to experiment with the setup of the show to see if it can fit into a 30 minute form and how the viewing audience finds that.

So .. there will be only one topic this week plus the usual Q&A session:

  • Mer: A (not so) new (mobile Linux) hope. The project and the community, a history and an update. We will look at what the Mer project provides and who uses it, visit the community structure and introduce the brand new build service that rolled out to replace the MeeGo build service that is being closed down.
  • Q&A: Ask me anything, and I might answer it .. history shows the likelihood of that is actually pretty high.
See you there on Google+ Hangouts at 20:00 UTC. Chat and questions can be found on in #luminosity.

New Text Folding in kate.git master

System & Utilities

In the kate.git master branch the text folding is now new and shiny.

In addition to be faster and less memory hungry (no folding tree is around if you fold nothing, it is only created on-demand exactly for the folded regions), the new code is less complex and smaller (and hopefully better documented + unit tested, it actually has a test for most internal operations).

There is actually now a clean separation, the folding does not mix with highlighting and can be used without it, too.

This allows for a better integration of indentation based foldings like in Python (and already fixes the most ugly miss-placements of folding regions there) and empowers the user to fold arbitrary regions manually.

This can be done at the moment with two kate commands (for the F7 command line):

  • “fold” will create persistent fold for the current selection, this fold will stay until next reload of document (will implement some dfold command later, to delete it)
  • “tfold” will create temporary fold for the current selection, this fold will disappear again on unfolding

This should allow more...

Plasma-nm preview

System & Utilities

I’d like to show you what we are doing for network management in KDE. With Lukáš Tinkl we started to write a new plasma applet for managing your network connections. It’s a long road to have some stable release or something for daily usage, but we have already wired and wireless connections and some basic functionality for other connection types. The entire applet is written in QML except for C++ model and some classes for working with NetworkManager. For that purpose we are using libnm-qt library which is Qt library for NetworkManager. We are also working on a new connection editor which will be as a standalone application. This editor uses some components from the old Plasma NM applet but it’s redone to use libnm-qt library.

If you want to try it, you can get it from our git repository git:// and you should disable the kded module from the old Plasma NM applet but we are not supporting secrets for VPN connections for now.

You will have to also compile libmm-qt git:// and libnm-qt (settings more...

Fixing a subtle animation bug in Dolphin

System & Utilities

Noticing the bug

Some time ago I worked on a problem with the mouse over animation in Dolphin. It was mostly visible with hidden files, because icons for hidden files are semi transparent. The bug caused icons for hidden files to "blink" when one moved the mouse over them.

I thought the fix was simple, filed this review request, which got in.

But that was too easy. Two weeks ago it was pointed out to me that the fix was wrong, and was causing a blink at the end of the hover animation. It's the kind of subtle bugs which you don't see at first, but can't ignore once it has been pointed out to you. Here is a short video demonstrating it:

Understanding the bug

How does one debug such a bug? If you are smart enough, you look at the code, let it sink in you and at some point yell: "AH! THE BUG IS THERE!"

On the other hand, if you're like me, you need more information. Over the years I built more...

A fresh new KMix

System & Utilities

KMix is KDE’s forgotten redheaded stepchild.

Humble beginnings

It is old, has been maintained my Christian Esken since early 2001, and has grown organically. Through no fault of Christian’s or anyone else’s, it is buggy, messy, and nobody else wants to help fix it, or at least has the constitution to do so.

Us redheads need to stick together.

At last year’s Randa, I started working on refactoring and rebuilding KMix from the ground up. Why should adjusting the volume in your desktop be so frustrating? It shouldn’t, thats why.

KMix is back with a new edition~

That is the prototype for the new KMix. The UI design has been shamelessly stolen from pavucontrol:

As you can see, there is much work left to do. However, I feel more...

Luminosity of Free Software, episode 8

System & Utilities

This week's Luminosity of Free Software show will be recorded tomorrow on Friday, instead of the usual Thursday time slot. I have another engagement tonight, and it will be interesting to see how viewership changes, if at all, on Fridays.

Topics tomorrow will include:

  • Plasma Media Center: .. or "PMC" as we lovingly refer to it, had its first stable release this week We'll take a peek behind the scenes to see what drives it. We'll also glance at it's goals, purpose and future.

Tanglu will be usable for both developers of upstream software and the average Linux user and Linux newbie. This is possible because in our opinion developers and users don’t have different needs for a desktop system. Both kinds of users like a polished desktop which “just works”. We will, hwever, not apply any kind of fancy modification on upstream software, we will basically just distribute what upstream created, so users can get an almost “pure” GNOME and KDE experience.
Tanglu is designed to be able to solve the issue that Debian is frozen for a long time and Debian Developers can’t make new more...
