George Goldberg: KDE PIM Krush Day is now!

System & Utilities

OK, so this really should have been announced before, but due to a combination of factors including my being offline for 2 days (and still on a very unreliable connection), it didn’t get announced.

Today will be the first of several days focused on finding bugs in KDE PIM 4.1 alpha/beta releases. KDE PIM (which includes Kotnact, KMail, Akregator, KNode and several other PIM apps) has not yet been released with KDE 4, and these days aim to spot as many bugs as possible in them so they can be fixed before the final release.

In order to take part, you will need a copy of KDE SVN trunk, or an aplha/beta/snapshot version of KDE 4.1. If you don’t have any of these, there is a Live DVD (about 900mb) created specially so you can join in with the Krush day anyway. Come and join us at #kde-bugs on irc.freenode.net, and look at the Techbase page for where to detail bugs you find.

Holger Freyther (zecke): Code Cloning an example

System & Utilities Some parts of code cloning are bad. In contrast to my other post this is supposed to be entertaining and something you can do before breakfast. Find the difference yourself and draw the conclusion. This code is from qmailstore.cpp from the qtopiamail library. This is not to pick on any developer at Trolltech but to highlight how code review and discussion could create a better Qtopia product.

Matt Rogers (mattr): reviewboard is fixed

System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)

If you’ve been trying to get to the reviewboard and haven’t had any luck, you should now be able to get there. I tried to do an upgrade and apparently, the upgrade process failed me, so reviewboard was down nearly a week while I tried to get it back up and running. Hopefully we won’t have any more problems.

Also, if you’re still trying to access reviewboard via http://matt.rogers.name, you’ll need to update your bookmarks to point to http://mattr.info:8080 instead. I lost my domain name when the registrar’s billing system went down around the same time I was supposed to renew my domain, and they refused to answer my emails about getting it renewed.  I had to move the port to 8080 because we have verizon now, and they are either blocking port 80 even though i port forwarded it or there’s something else I forgot to disable.

Chani Armitage (Chani): state of the ZUI

System & Utilities

another thing I’ve been chipping away at for 4.1 is the ZUI. it’s far from complete, but it’s at least becoming something I actually use now. :) keyboard shortcuts can be used to navigate it quickly (see my previous post), clicking a containment will make it the active one (barring the focus bugs mentioned in that post), and notmart has amazingly made the cashews actually show up in the right place! :)

I also added an option in the contextmenu for removing activities. right now you can only remove ones that aren’t active (ie when you call up the dashboard you don’t get that containment shown) but it’s pretty useful when you’re playing around and add way more than you actually want. :)

Oh, and if you don’t want to zoom out, you can use the keyboard shortcuts to switch containment instantly. my extreme laziness leads to features like this. :)

There are some features I didn’t get to, though… I wanted some kind of visual clue as to which containment is ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): keyboard shortcuts and code duplication

System & Utilities

I may not have blogged in a while, but I’m still programming. last week I was obsessing over keyboard shortcuts; I was bloody sick of having to use my mouse so much in plasma, especially since my poor laptop mousepad isn’t as reliable as it used to be. I was also annoyed at all the different scraps of code I saw scattered everywhere for common actions like “zoom out” and “configure $foo”. after thinking about these two problems for a while, I realised that they were actually one. I spent some time pondering the interconnectedness of all things, but eventually realised I was going to have to *write* some code instead of just thinking about it. ;)

Anyways, the root of the problem is that hardly anyone was using QActions, and where they were using them, they were just creating their own and then throwing them away. silly and wasteful. so, I gave each Applet a KActionCollection, and dropped some useful actions in there. I rounded up a bunch of code that ...read more...

Lukas Appelhans: The current Tom-Editor, still work in Progress

System & Utilities

Hey!

It has been a long time since the last Statusupdate from me. Sorry for that ;(

In this time happened very much:

In Arxin we have now scripted Plugins, thanks to Kross and the help of Sebastian Sauer. :)

Both Locale- and Hardware-Plugins are scripted in Python. Here the obligatory Screenshot:

Arxin MainWindow with Hardware-Plugin

In Shaman we completed the Plasmoid to release it with Shaman 1.0. This and the Shaman-Runner are both depending on KDE 4.1 since there were major API-Changes and both Dario and me are using it as working System. Expect Beta3 soon ;)

Also we began with the first Development steps of Shaman2. That means: API- and Library-Building, nothing to see yet ;)

And now the best (or “Da bomb” like Dario and me are saying ;)): Shaman2 will be developed in KDE’s playground with the target Extragear. We are pretty amazed about that =)

As our Main-Backend will be PackageKit we got ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: Vision X

System & Utilities Last week I gave a talk at the Ubuntu Release Party in Amsterdam (NL, of course). It was fun, just like last year. And again I was surprised how much broader this meeting was than 'just' free software. Free Culture was heavily represented, and there even were talks about digital freedom/privacy projects like Little Sister (Dutch, sorry). And of course we saw Big Buck Bunny, the movie by the Blender project. I can tell you - it's a piece of art. Literally, of course, but also in the sense of 'an stunning piece of work'. Pixar couldn't have done it any better, and if you consider the resources it was done with - amazing.

As usual, my talk focussed more on the vision of the KDE project than on specific details. Of course my own interest in Innovation, both social and open (somehow that sounds funny) have quite an influence on how I see this topic. On the other hand, being in this community of course gives me at least some illusion that ...read more...

On the ubuntudevelopers group in YouTube there are interviews of some of the summit participants including me talking about Kubuntu.

Ivan Cukic: Back on track (Lancelot)

System & Utilities

Well, I confess that I could be called lazy and all, since there is not that much visible progress in Lancelot’s world. But I have a couple of excuses:

  • Exams. Unfortunately, I have obligations beside KDE, Plasma and Lancelot. If somebody would like to pay me to do KDE work, I would gladly accept. :)
  • Plasma breakage. As you probably know, Plasma went through API review and conversion to WoC. So, that had to be done for Lancelot as well. And it was quite painful since Lancelot is based on completely custom-made widgets (now in a separate liblancelot library).

So, enough complaining and excuses, Lancelot is now again in buildable state, and more importantly, in a screenshottable state:
Lancelot WoC

The news include:

Andreas Aardal Hanssen (bibr): The benefit and cost of a good API pattern: Property Propagation

System & Utilities

Here’s another brain dump… I’m working on adding opacity support to QGraphicsItem and possibly QWidget, and have run into a common inside pattern, with a common problem to solve. Figured I’d share it with those interested.

Many of Qt’s properties propagate, some do in different ways, but the general pattern is that you set or modify a property on a widget or an item, and that property has some effect up and/or down its hierarchy. This is a good API pattern. Propagation is most often what you want, and you’re often surprised when a certain property doesn’t propagate (like QWidget::style).

  • Q{Graphics,}Widget::visible - if you explicitly show a widget, its implicitly hidden descendants are shown, explicitly hide a widget, and visible children are all implicitly hidden
  • Q{Graphics,}Widget::enabled - if you explicitly enable a widget, its implicitly disabled descendants are enabled, explicitly disable a widget, and its enabled descendants are implicitly disabled
  • Q{Graphics,}Widget::palette - you set a mask [*] of modified palette entries, the palette is resolved against its ancestors, and propagates to children
  • Q{Graphics,}Widget::font - you set a mask of ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): more 4.1 sexiness: marble

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)KDE is about more than just Plasma. A lot more, to the tune of several hundred shipped binaries (libraries, executables) that comprise an amazing number of applications. These applications often "live together" in thematic package, such as games or office or media. The educational package, produced by the awesome community that is the KDE Edu team, includes a desktop globe called Marble.

When I read Torsten's blog the other day about Open Street Map (OSM) integration, I just had to check this out for myself. Verdict: it works. Look, there's even the pub across the street from my house:

Even though this is new code that is still being worked on, the zooming and panning are already pretty smooth. It will be fun to see just how good it gets, really. I've heard rumour of integrating the OSM search as well.

Niels van Mourik (nielsvm): Plasmatastic!

System & Utilities

So a few hours ago I had some time left and updated my whole KDE build, including kdebase. After using an extremely unstable Plasma, from the port-it-to-woc-dept period, for weeks.. I now have a seriously stable desktop again, with loads of unnoticed improvements. For example, I connected my laptop to a screen (from widescreen to a squary screen), restarted X11 and started KDE again. After 5 minutes using it I realized that in 4.0 I would have ended up hacking numbers in the panel containment in plasmarc to get the panel correct again, it all just works now!

Thumbs up to KDE, and the Plasma team in particular! I’m really sure now that 4.1 is going to be a very solid release…

Ps. Oh, and that Krunner revamp rocks as well!

Richard Johnson: Kommunity

System & Utilities

I wanted to let all of the Planet KDE and Planet Ubuntu readers know just how awesome our communities are. 24 hours ago I wrote a blog post titled, “KDE 4.1 documentation needs your help,” and we received and overwhelming response. On a typical day, #kde-docs on IRC has about 5 people idling most of the time. Right now there are 19 people, of which 75% of them are working on documentation right now. Simply awesome! We have been up to around 25 people earlier, but still this is the most action I have seen in that channel in the past 3 years.

I want to give a quick thanks to the following people on IRC who jumped in and started working:

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Event Handling

System & Utilities My friend and colleague Donna Metzlar pointed me to the /ETC which is happening next week in Amsterdam. For folk who aren't going to OpenExpo in Karlsruhe or are missing LinuxTag in Berlin it might be a good alternative alternative destination. Donna's been organizing this event for years. Here's the spiel on the evening programme:
The seventh Eclectic Tech Carnival is taking place in the Plantage Dok (Plantagedoklaan 8-12) in Amsterdam from Sunday May the 25 until Saturday May the 31st 2008. The /ETC is an event where women interested in technology meet each other to exchange experiences in a fun and educational manner. It is a combination of a female hack meeting and skill-share.

The evening programme is free and open to the public. Men and women of all ages and backgrounds are welcome, so join in!

Maksim Orlovich (SadEagle): News from the land of Konquerors

System & Utilities

A bunch of exciting things have happened to Konqueror in preparation for 4.1 Beta 1 this weekend.

First of all, KHTML guru Germain Garand has committed the bulk of the designMode/contentEditable editing code. It's not 100% done yet, but it's a monumental amount of work, and it should enable the various rich-text editor apps to work in KHTML.

In the UI land, Eduardo Elvira has committed some fancy session management features such as crash recovery.

But, I am gonna be bit a bit selfish, and mostly talk about what I did: my performance/bytecode version of KJS - KJS "Frostbyte" - is now in kdelibs trunk, and part of KDE4.1 Beta 1. This brings some significant pure ES performance improvements over previous versions, and lets us put up some great numbers. On the SunSpider benchmark suite, this version does:

  • 2.27x better than Firefox 2
  • 2x better than QtWebKit from Qt4.4
  • About 1.4x faster than KJS 4.0 "Blizzard"
  • About 1.152x faster overall than Opera 9.5 beta 2, but it's really a wash, with both engines winning lots of individual benchmarks...

Seb Ruiz (sebr): Review: AutopanoPro

System & Utilities Face of Seb Ruiz (sebr)

What: Autopano (registered version @ 99 euro)

Verdict: totally awesome.

Pros:
- Very fast, reliable stitching of images together
- Excellent colour and exposure correction, even if you don’t lock your exposures
- Supports HDR imaging! Create panoramas out of raw format files and then use tone mapping software like Qtpfsgui
- Excellent barrel distortion compensation on wide angled shots
- Qt4! (and cross platform)

Cons:
- It’s not free software :(
- Expensive
- User interface could use some work

Example:
Panorama created out of 8 individual raw images, then tone-mapped with Qtpfsgui. I can’t get a larger version because Qtpfsgui runs out of memory - the resultant panoramic raw image is over 130MB!

Richard Johnson: KDE 4.1 documentation needs your help

System & Utilities

Wow what a day! I woke up this morning to an email from Allen Winter letting us know that he would like to implement a documentation freeze on June 3, 2008. That is like 2 weeks away! There is still a lot of documentation work to be done and very few of us to spread around. This is where you come in!

  • Can you read and write English?
  • Can you write technical documentation using DocBook/XML?
  • Do you have KDE 4.1 running on one of your machines? (either a recent alpha release or a trunk checkout will do…it would be nice if you were running a 4.1 or trunk release)
  • Can you do 200 push ups?

Wait a second!?!? 200 push ups? Don’t know how that one got in there. Anyways, we NEED PEOPLE OF ALL SKILL SETS, who can read and write English fairly well, to help us get out as much documentation as possible for the 4.1 release, due out on my birthday, July 29th! Aaron Seigo (aseigo): krunner quicky update

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)I put together a quick screencast to update one of our artists on what's happened to krunner in the last day. It's not really meant as a promo piece, but you get to hear me meander about through the new things that popped up in the last 24 hours so I figured maybe one or two of you might want to check it out as well. Still lots of polishing left, particularly in the artwork dpt. Enjoy the ogg-iliciousness, all 5MB of it.

Diego Iastrubni: Konqueror 3 + GMail = love?

System & Utilities

I am running here Mandriva 2008.1 with KDE 3.5.9, and I have set up Konqueror to idenitify as Mozilla 1.7.3 on Windows XP and now GMail works. I don’t think the chat works, but everything else seems to work. It is the old interface (no cool labels), but it does work!

Google reader is not working perfectly as well (I did not change the identification there). One of the problems is scrolling with the mouse wheel. It seems that they use an iframe, and the top frame is eating the events instead of propageting it to the internal iframe. I am seeing this on other sites. Also pressing “n” to move to the next article is not working, but space works as expected. Funny.

… and that’s the obsolete Konqueror on KDE3! now I really want to re-compile KDE4 and test Konqueror 4.1! If anyone wants to open bugs on Konqueror4, go for it. IMHO opening against KDE3 is not smart.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): SPARCing annoyance

System & Utilities Most of the dependencies for KDE4 have compiled on SPARC now. That's a pretty big collection of software, including BOOST, Apache stdcxx, and Qt. Doing this run has highlighted a few issues with our patches (remember, there's no need to futz with the definition of float_t in clucene on SPARC; unlike x86 there's just one ). The SPARC build failed to get through kdesupport, tough, because of .. missing symbols in clucene. That's a big annoyance, to be sure. Getting all the variations on the theme of architecture and system release done takes a lot of time and hardware and discipline. Discipline is something the rag-tag collection of machines under my desk doesn't have.

Anyway, I've switched off SPARC builds again for the time being as I want to concentrate on KDE itself, not the dependencies, and that usually means that using amd64 hardware is both faster and more convenient to use.

Compiler requirements have been bumped a little: you need SS12 with patch 124864-03 now. One of the thing that fixes is that ...read more...

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): GDB hidden gem

System & Utilities Face of Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos)Well at least it was hidden to me :D

Sometimes it's difficult to keep in view the surrounding lines of code when you are using GDB. list command helps but it's not that user friendly. So the other day a coworker told me about GDB TUI. You can enable it with Ctrl+X A and voil

Cyrille Berger: Last week in KOffice...

System & Utilities I am going to try to held a (more or less, rather less than more) weekly short blog entry about what's going on in koffice development.

So last week (and in fact it cover for more since I already have missed one week since deciding to write this...) :

  • website: koffice website has always been suboptimal, to say the least, being maintained by developers who lack the skill and the time, it has never been able to properly market the suite. This was a recurrent topic of discussion among us, and it looks like we have found someone willing to take the lead on the subject, so expect more in the following weeks.

  • kword: while a lot of work has been done recently on the text shape (which is share through all koffice), until recently, kword itself had seen little changes, but Sebastian and Pierre have pick up the challenge of bring kword to a releasable state

  • windows package: the other nice things is the availability of KOffice packages in the KDE Windows ...read more...

Lorn Potter: doing it

System & Utilities

It’s been a long time since I have blogged anything. Been busy finding a new house to live in, then moving house, then holiday/being sick at Waikiki in Hawaii. Waikiki is much like the Gold Coast here in Queensland, except people there wear shoes, and tops. Australia is much more baby/family friendly, although. My 2 years old son finally conquered his fear of ocean waves, and was happily swimming in the ocean. Now we just need to wait for summer here so we can go swimming at the beach.

Been working on Qtopia integrations on the ficgta02 and n810 and readying for the upcoming Qtopia 4.4 release.

In particular dynamic rotation. Still small things to be fixed up for Qtopia 4, as a late addition to the Qtopia 4 game. We used to have it way back in Qtopia 1 and 2, but for Qtopia 4 it was never ported or really thought about, as most devices we were developing for did not need it, or didn’t really seem sensible to have it. But the Neo and n800/n810 are different. ...read more...

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: A wolf in designer clothing

System & Utilities Ok, so I kinda liked the latter iterations of the Graywolf look for Amarok 2. Apparently, not many others did though. So Lee Olson ( our main artist at the moment ) and I have been thinking of alternatives for a while. And It would seem we have finally come up with something that has managed to get most of the Amarok team excited. It is still in the initial phase and a lot of work is needed still, but so far it is already a huge improvements to the overall look of Amarok 2, at leasts in my humble opinion. This new look is much more clean, and actually a lot closer to our initial idea of what Amarok 2 should look like.

But all this text really does not give an idea of what this looks like, so here goes:

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Juxtapositions

System & Utilities At first I thought that Ars Technica being acquired by Condé Nast was the weirdest-timed April Fools joke I'd ever seen; that's mostly because Scary-go-Round is wrapping up a storyline about Shelly writing for Condé Nast and racking up silly expenses and being lost on a tropical island. It's not a name I've encountered in serious prose before.

Packages for the dependencies of KDE4 for SPARC (32 and 64 bit) are on BionicMutton now; not all of them, but there's a Qt package (4.4.0) for those with a pressing desire to run designer on SPARC. These are prepared with my current quality standards for Solaris packages: it compiles, so ship it. The same packages for x86 are also available but a good deal older; I'll be updating them on BionicMutton when the build on our x86 cruncher is done. Those are the packages I use every day for my KDE4 desktop, so they should be pretty good for workstation use.

"Pretty good" ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): krunner for 4.1

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)I have said a few times that the user interface for krunner in 4.0.x was not meant to be a production interface. It was actually something I threw together in 10 minutes one day to test things and then it just stuck around. Ugh! Just under the wire for the feature freeze, we managed to get a new UI that we've been working on for a bit into svn for 4.1.

There are a number of things left to do, including:
  • single runner mode (this is supported in libplasma, just not in the UI)

  • fixed query mode (ditto)

  • selected item presentation improvements (bigger, comlete text, float to top)

  • put back access to per-match options in the UI

  • replace the ugly pushbuttons with something cuter

  • paging (so when there are more items than fit you can easily move between them)

  • short text below individual match icons

  • better default artwork

  • respect the desktop graphical effects setting (to turn off all the glitz)

  • consolidate the animation timers into just one (probably ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Why kcm modules are weird under Solaris

System & Utilities I spent quite some time today trying to figure out why kcm modules don't load properly -- this is the reason I have been bemoaning the lack of focus follows mouse all this time, because the kwinfocus module doesn't show up. Lots of kdelibs compiles later with extra debugging and tracing added to KPluginFactory, I have come to the conclusion that it's actually a compiler bug. This is the first time in a few months that I think I've hit a real bug. Or at least, something that is so different in gcc and in Sun CC that it's annoying to work around and silently displays different runtime behavior. These things are to be expected because KDE is pretty demanding C++ code.

Here is some code that exercises the bug. It's derived from KPluginFactory.
#include <iostream>

class object { } ;
class A : public object { public: A(int i) { std::cerr << "A::A(" << i << ")n"; } } ;
class B : public object { public: B(int i) { std::cerr ...read more...
