System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)
  • Up late in the morning (8am; normal is 6:30am). Bath for S. while C. is off to the store.
  • Worked on the new bugzilla a bit. Sent email to sysadmin@kde to see about getting bz database dumps so I can do testing on the data conversion.
  • Off to Mom’s in the late afternoon for birthday/housewarming party. Can’t go wrong with hamburgers, cake, and icecream. Mom’s new house is nice too.
  • Home late. Poked at git hooks after girls were in bed. Now to write one for my trac install

Marco Martin: 4.1 times more Prettyness

System & Utilities

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you the brand new shiny Plasma theme that will be used for KDE 4.1:

Plasma theme for KDE 4.1

Here you can see the new applet and krunner backgrounds, the new panel, our brand-new carbon fiber clock and some items that once upon a time weren't themed at all, like the pager and the taskbar.

This is the wonderful work of Nuno, i did some work in the code in the last month to make the theme support even more extensive, to have all your nice plasma widgets with more SVG prettiness, so let's start thing by thing :)

  • The pager: the mini-desktops now have 3 different backgrounds, and when the mouse goes over the widget the mini desktops fades in and out with a neat animation

  • The panel: when composite is disabled his borders must be nice even if we don't have antialiasing and when its width is the 100% of the screen ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): KDE at LinuxTag 2008, Day 3 - Talks, talks, talks

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
The third day of LinuxTag was dominated by the KDE track in the conference part. Almost all current topics were covered and gave the visitors the opportunity to listen to the developer’s visions and plans.

The talks at the KDE track covered basic KDE 4 introduction, Akonadi, Usability, Multimedia and KOffice 2. Slides are not available atm, but the presenters themselves might upload them somewhere.

I didn’t find the time to go to any talk which was quite sad - I would have loved to see them all. But there was lot’s to do at the booth, and to help there was my main purpose. Additionally at the booth I had the opportunity to speak to most of the developers anyway ;)

Besides looking after the booth I also applied to give a presentation about Kontact’s portability to other platforms in fall this year - if personal life permits. But ...read more...

James Ots: Wow

System & Utilities A couple of days ago, I dug out my old laptop, the screen of which had given up the ghost a few months ago, and switched it on. To my surprise, it was working perfectly, which is great, because my work laptop is about to be taken away as they roll out a load of extremely fast desktops. Great for work, not so great for me. But at least my old laptop has decided not to be broken any more.

For the last year or so, since I had my nice new work laptop, I've been running openSUSE on an external USB hard drive (which surprisingly, benchmarked faster than using the internal drive), and I've been using KDE 4.0. I know my last post on this blog said I'd reverted to 3.5, but I tried 4.0.1 when it came out (or possible 4.0.2?), and discovered the actual show stoppers had been fixed, and the irritations were small enough I could live with them.

Anyway, onto the 'wow'. Since my old laptop had a clean install of openSUSE 10.3 ...read more...

George Goldberg: Sunday 1st June - Konqueror Bug Day

System & Utilities

I’m sorry, but I’m writing yet another post today! Tomorrow (Sunday, June 8th) we will have another Konqueror Bug Triage Day. Details, as usual on Techbase. Hopefully we can finish the Konqueror-general bugs at last this weekend!

In case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last three months, here’s the obligatory introduction to Bug Days.

Bug Days are run regularly by the Bugsquad. We take an application and look through all its old bug reports, seeing which of them can be reproduced on recent versions of KDE, and which cannot. For those bugs that still exist, we try to provide as much detail as possible to make it easier for the developers to fix them. Bug Days are a great way to contribute to KDE because you don’t need any programming knowledge - just a copy of a recent version of KDE (or if you don’t have that, use KDE4daily or the Bugsquad LiveCD). Come to ...read more...

Dominik Haumann: "I miss the applet which shows system usage"

System & Utilities ...is one of the comments on Sune's blog. "I won’t call it a a must-have, but I’d love to have it back :D". Well, I call it a must have, that's why I've ported it to KDE4 a week ago:The code is not in svn yet (here is the code for now). I still had issues with correct resizing and believe there was also a bug in the plasma lib when I developed it which seems to be fixed now. I didn't have time for more testing, but finally this has to go in for KDE 4.2 :)
Besides that, I'm not yet content with how the data engine publishs data. The situation is that all system monitor data is extracted in one tick, but I still would like to publish it in three categories: cpu, mem and swap. But if I do so, an applet's dataUpdated() function is called 3 times and that's not what I want. So for ...read more...

George Goldberg: KDE PIM Krush Day 1 Results & Krush Day 2

System & Utilities

Last Sunday the KDE Bugsquad held a Krush day for KDE PIM applications. Our aim was to find bugs in KDE’s PIM applications, which will be released for the first time in the KDE4 series with KDE 4.1. About 10 people took part in the session (which was only announced on the day) and they found about 60 issues with the applications tested, including Kontact, KMail, Akregator. About a dozen of these bugs were fixed on the day, most impressively for KOrganizer, for which nearly all the bugs found are already fixed! Many thanks to all the people who helped out to make sure KDE PIM 4.1 is as stable and reliable as possible.

Due to the success of this Krush Day, the Bugsquad will host another KDE PIM Krush day on Sunday 8th June. More information about that will come soon, but for now, just put a big X in your diary whether you are a KDE developer, bug-triager or just enthusiastic user!

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): Friday on LinuxTag

System & Utilities As some of you might know, I attended the LinuxTag in my parents' town Berlin.
I arrived on thursday to meet some people from KDAB and Intevation who announced the first release of Kontact on Windows as well.
I have been meeting a lot of new people from all over KDE project, but especially three people I was rather surprised about:
First was of course Aaron who was the party bundle all day but fell asleep just one minute before we had to leave the S-Bahn-train ;-) -
then of course the new employee from KDE e.V. Claudia who is really a win for KDE community -
and Alexander Neundorf (yes the one who always rejects the cmake macros;-)). Alexander really will look into every detail for you and I think that besides that cmake improves our productivity a lot I think that Alex is doing a great job as well.

Ok, and as usual to give a small impression:

Sune Vuorela (pusling): reply to reply to KDE 4.1 experience

System & Utilities

Fathi blogged a reply to Peter in where he kind of “tagged” me to also reply. So I will.

  • you can’t configure size and appearance of the panel. This is a long-standing problem, but I thought it was fixed.

You can as Fathi writes, but it is … a bit well hidden.

  • KMail doesn’t interact well with encrypted IMAP accounts. I didn’t try much beyond that, because I have no accounts that are not affected by that.

My encrypted IMAP accounts works without any problems on 3 seperate machines. (home workstation, laptop, work workstation). There is a slight packaging issue here though, not all shlibs were proper bumped, so make sure you have 4.0.80-something of all packages.

  • Various kicker widgets don’t appear to be available for KDE 4 (yet?).

You have moon applet and fifteen puzzle in extragear-plasma. Eyes-widget seems gone though. Not a big loss. (Or which ones are you talking about?)

- and yes, I do see kde4 in Lenny.

Andreas Aardal Hanssen (bibr): Decoration items, light and shadow effects

System & Utilities

I’m studying how we can add light and shadow to widgets and items. I want to hear what you think :-). So I’ll just throw out my ideas and see what happens.

Light and shadow are special effects that follow and decorate items, and affect how they are rendered, at the same time as they’re a bit different from regular items / subitems, or subwidgets. For both light and shadow effects, there’s sometimes a need to render outside the item’s boundaries and blend into surroundings. For widgets, we then need to do something to break out of the box model… to make that happen. For inside-widget light effects, we’re limited to what we can do inside paintEvent() or inside the paint() function. I don’t know about you, but I think both light and shadow effects should be primary citizens of the scene graph, which essentially means they are also items. Stack-above / always-on-top (overlays) or stack-below / always-below items (underlays?).

Here’s a flash video showing a sample of what I’m working on. This is based on Graphics View.

Cornelius Schumacher: LinuxTag Excitement

System & Utilities Face of Cornelius Schumacher

LinuxTag is a blast. I'm here for the third day, have met a lot of fantastic people, listened to great talks, and had a lot of fun. On Wednesday there was Aaron's KDE 4 keynote, where he also showed the tremendously exciting Marble with OpenStreetMap integration. Yesterday Till talked about Kontact, which now runs on all platforms including Windows. Liquidat has screenshots, or check it out live at the BSI booth. Another fascinating project I saw is the Open Bicycle Computer, a bike computer built from scratch as open project.

Today at 13:30 there is Nat's keynote The future of Linux is software appliances. Go to room London to see it or check out the live stream. It will be worth it Smiling

Today there also is the KDE track and tomorrow will be the openSUSE track with more great talks.

Roland Wolters (liquidat): KDE at LinuxTag 2008, Day 2 - Taking over the World

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
The second day at LinuxTag is over. It showed how KDE is steadily taking over the world.

Today a group of CIOs did a guided tour through the exhibition halls, and of course the icing cake was the KDE booth. There the main question was: how can KDE be interesting for such people, for companies.

And the answer was never easier than with KDE 4: through portability. The KDE 4 libs are amazing, and additionally the already existing apps on top of it are excellent programs. The key point for such people is however Kontact (which was also presented in a talk today which I unfortunately missed). Kontact provides an easy to manager group ware client compatible with a lot of different servers out there - and now it is also available on all three big platforms. This makes it possible for business people to have one central place for the configuration for all platforms ...read more...

Martin Meredith: Annoyances

System & Utilities

Annoyances

So - today I decided that I needed a “conference laptop”

Basically, at the moment, I have my main desktop, (custom built monster) and an eeePC.

While the eeePC does exactly what I need it to, which is be portable, and have wifi - so I can check email etc etc on the fly, it doesn’t lead itself very well to developing on the move. If I try to compile anything but the most basic, it dies. So, I thought that I’d take some of my paycheck and invest a few Quid in a lower end laptop.

What I need is

  • At least 1Gb RAM
  • A Processor around the 1.7 GHz mark
  • As much disk space as possible
  • Wifi
  • 15″ Screen size minimum

What I’d also LIKE is

  • Compatible Video card for stuff like Compiz, etc
  • Wifi Chipset that’s compatible with Linux without me having to hack away for hours to get it working (preferably something that works out the box)
  • Something where I’m not paying extra for the privilege of having Windows installed before I ...read more...

Aurelien Gateau: Integrating user pain parameters to Bugzilla?

System & Utilities

Stumbled upon an interesting article about bug triaging. The idea is to rate bugs using 3 factors:

Type (What type of bug is this?)

  • 7: Crash: Bug causes crash or data loss. Asserts in the Debug release.
  • 6: Major usability: Impairs usability in key scenarios.
  • 5: Minor usability: Impairs usability in secondary scenarios.
  • 4: Balancing: Enables degenerate usage strategies that harm the experience.
  • 3: Visual and Sound Polish: Aesthetic issues
  • 2: Localization:
  • 1: Documentation: A documentation issue

Priority (How will those affected feel about the bug?)

  • 5: Blocking further progress on the daily build.
  • 4: A User would return the product. Cannot RTM. The Team would hold the release for this bug.
  • 3: A User would likely not purchase the product. Will show up in review. Clearly a noticeable issue.
  • 2: A Pain – users won’t like this once they notice it. A moderate number of users won’t buy.
  • 1: Nuisance – not a big deal but noticeable. Extremely unlikely to affect sales.

Likelihood (Who will be affected by ...read more...

  • off to work at the normal time. traffic was nice and light. poked at a few bugs in the graphical order entry system. fixed a few of them.
  • home later than normal, trying to make up time for the long lunch I took yesterday. S. was her normal self - fussy - but still very cute. :)
  • irc in the evening after C. and S. were both in bed. Spent some time in #kde-bugs talking to blauzahl about kopete bug triage. If you’re looking for a way to contribute, that’s a great start. All you need is a recent version of svn trunk, and some time. The bugsquad page on Techbase will give you more info.
  • Also managed to get various git-svn repos that I had cloned updated and built. we’ll see if this yields any results in terms of code.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Yes, I can (SPARC)

System & Utilities Today I got through libs, pimlibs and base (+ another eight KDE SVN modules, but I didn't try anything out from them) on SPARC. For the first time, I could run two KDE4s side-by-side on Solaris on radically different CPU archiutectures.

Mostly it works just the same. The big obvious difference is that PorterDuff painting is not supported on the XSun server, which means that most of the plasma effects are completely borked, just like on the SunRay thin client (about which I blogged back at FOSDEM). So the desktop cashew has an unsightly grey ring around it, like ring-around-the-tub. The taskbar is unreadable because the gradients get dithered to hell. The fileview thing (ooh! I do have icons on the desktop, just implemented differently) is similarly an unsightly grey box with "Unknown File Type" icons in it.

I didn't play with KDE4 on SPARC for long; just enough to see that KSnapshot works, that the OpenGL information section of KInfoCenter reports something sensible (an XVR-2500, yup, that ought ...read more...

The LinuxTag 2008 is taking place place from May 28 till May 30 at the conference center in Berlin. In the past I thought about visiting the conference several times but lost track of it. Bart Coppens (BCoppens): Data Retention in Belgium: coming soon?

System & Utilities

Today, the BIPT (Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunication) released a draft of the implementation of the EU directive regarding data retention in Belgian Law at the request of the minster for Enterprising and Simplification (dunno how else to translate 'minister voor Ondernemen en Vereenvoudigen') (downloadable in Dutch and French). It seems the idea is to introduce some form of public scrutiny (instead of just making the law and be done with it), so that people can comment on it. I'm of course completely pessimistic about real chances of influencing it for the better, but one never knows.

Even though that text seems to have some very minor redeeming parts on the surface, when I read it, I wasn't happy. Seems like they want ISPs and other services providers (email, webmail, VoIP, etc) to keep a lot of information, for the maximum extent permissible by the directive (that is, 2 years). Of course, no modern law would be complete without having a clause in it that makes it permissible to extend that term indefinitely ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): And now Boon follows suit

System & Utilities

About four years ago we discovered that Lindemans puts artificial sweetener in their Gueuze beer. Which means it tastes awful. Today Irina came home with Boon Gueuze and Faro. The Gueuze is still kosher, but Boon puts artificial sweetener in their Faro. Faro should be sweet of course, but it should be sweetened with sugar, not filthy, nasty tasting artificial sweeteners. And yes, we both can taste all existing artificial sweeteners -- there's not one that doesn't leave a foul film of ickiness clinging to our mouths. Bad, bad Boon.

Thiago Macieira (thiago): Qt 4.3.5: Two steps back and one step forward

System & Utilities

Earlier this month, we released the single, largest release of Qt since the 4.0.0 release two years ago. Qt 4.4.0 is the result of 10 months of hard work by the Trolls, including numerous distractions. And while it’s being digested by our clients and users, we’re working on Qt 4.4.1, which will include fixes for bugs that were already known at the time of the 4.4.0 release, as well as some that people have reported.

In the meantime, we take two steps back, to the 4.3.x series, and then one step forward: we’re releasing today Qt version 4.3.5. This release is meant for those who cannot upgrade to Qt 4.4.0 yet, but need fixes for some important issues. All of the changes done for 4.3.5 will be present in 4.4.1 and some are even part of 4.4.0 already.

This is the first time ever we’re doing a public release of the previous minor series. In the past, we’ve always stopped development of the previous minor ...read more...

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: A Cool little hack! ( Free, public domain, audio books in Amarok 2 )

System & Utilities A little while back, Amarok's very own Lydia Pintscher, aka. Nightrose, blogged about a session on free culture at FOSSCamp. Among the comments to that blog entry was a suggestion to integrate free, public domain audio books from Librivox.org into Amarok 2. This spurred a bit of a discussion which resulted in someone coming up with a link to a nice XML api for searching their catalog.

Now, regular readers of my blog will well know what happens when I see a nice API for searching free content.... :-)

So, after about an hour and a half of hacking, I give you the brand new Librivox.org service script:

As it is implemented as a ruby script, and not as a native C++ service, it is quite limited in its functionality, but it works great for searching for and streaming audio books. The ...read more...

Sune Vuorela (pusling): playing with plasma

System & Utilities

Now that kde4.1 is beginning to really take shape, I have also upgraded all my computers to kde4. Bye bye kde3.

I can’t live without a few kde3 apps though, particularily amarok. But my amarok usage was mostly controlled by the kicker media applet.

So I needed something that behaved similar to the kicker media applet. Plasma && dcop command line to the rescue. It still needs some polishing, especially getting the buttons closer together. But it works. It wasn’t that hard to get started, although the plasma docs still haven’t the quality of Qt documentation.

Here is how it looks:
My first plasmoid

And if anyone wants it, well - it is here: http://elvira.killmulehill.net/~sune/plasmaamarokcontrol-2008-05-27.tar.gz - at least for now.
