George Goldberg: KDE Pim Krush Day 2

System & Utilities

After the first small but successful Krush Day, we are having another this Sunday. If you didn’t make it last time (or even if you did), please come along to #kde-bugs and help keep KDE rocking.

The following announcement will appear on the dot as soon as they resolve the technical difficulties, but since its past midnight here, and I can hardly stay awake any longer, I’ll post it here first.

———————-

This Sunday (8th June), the KDE Bugsquad will host a KDE PIM Krush day. The aim of the day will be to find and document as many of the bugs in the PIM applications of the upcoming KDE 4.1 release as possible. The day will begin at 0:00 UTC on Sunday and continue until the day is over throughout the world. Krush Days are an excellent opportunity for KDE users keen to make their first contribution to the KDE project. You don’t need to set aside a huge amount of time - as little as ten minutes will be enough to ...read more...

Gilles Caulier: New digiKam Lens Auto-Correction Tool

System & Utilities

digiKam for KDE4 will become with another important tool for photograph: lens distorsions auto-correction. The plugin have been created by Adrian Schroeter from OpenSuse team.

This tool have been implemented as a new image editor plugin. It use LensFun shared library witch provide a database of lens settings to fix optical distorsions automatically. The tool use picture metadata to find the right settings to apply (Exif and Makernotes). You can adjust yourself all parameters if you need.

A video of this tool in action is available below. The test image used in this video come from Pablo d'Angelo collection (Hugin project).

Gilles Caulier: digiKam Map Serach tool under construction

System & Utilities

After to have improved the geo-location view from right sidebar in digiKam for KDE4, following this blog entry, the story continue with a new powerfull search tool based on Marble Widget to be able to find pictures using a map.

The new digiKam search backend implemented by Marcel is already able to perform a search based on a rectangle area defined by GPS positions. Now, we need a suitable graphical interface for end users.

System & Utilities i introduce a new krunner plugin that evaluates given Python expression, which could be useful for Python programmers.
in order to use this, expression must be provided with 'py=' prefix.
though krunner's autocompletion seems a bit unresponsive, i hope it would get better soon.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): google gadgets

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Just so that people can stop emailing me one at a time ;) ... I grabbed the Google Gadget code the day it was released and spent some time that evening looking at it. It's written in C++ which is cool; on the other hand there's also well over 100,000 lines of code in there too. Much of it seems to be about replicating things Plasma already does for applets (list them, load them, etc).

There seems to be two routes to take, in any case, to get Google Gadgets into Plasma:

a) Link the code they've released into a Plasma::ScriptEngine plugin. This ScriptEngine would need to provide a subclass of the Host class and bridge that to QGraphicsView. It seems really bulky, though, and I'm not sure we'd get overly terrific integration with plasma. It may be fast to do, though.

b) Grab their custom JS hooks and, as we have with MacOS Dashboard Widgets, provide a PackageStructure plugin and then throw the content of ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Future of FLOSS password storages: combined solution soon?

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
In a recent discussion about the future of KDE’s password manager KWalletManager it was mentioned that it is currently discussed to share a common password manager across all important FLOSS projects. While there is no result yet this is indeed a promising - and necessary - development.

It started with a question by Michael on the list kde-core-devel regarding the possibility to switch KWalletManager’s backend to the Qt Cryptographic Architecture (QCA) entirely. Robert answered that there was indeed discussion going on during FOSSCamp to merge all existing solutions (KDE, GNOME, OpenOffice, Firefox) to make it easier for the user to use these applications, but also to have the ability to sing-sign-on (meaning one login as user, and than automatically login everywhere else), which is a need for modern desktops. Afaik Fedora also has this topic on its radar, and it would surprise me ...read more...

Trolltech merges with Nokia

But do not be scared, my open source friends. This means that Qt and Qtopia will continue to be developed, and have even wider recognition that it is the greatest cross platform GUI toolkit on the planet.

More info here

I am sure there will be more press releases coming soon, so I won’t comment on anything else that might happen. But I can say this, this merger is a two way street. i.e. Nokia wants to learn from Trolltech and Trolltech can learn from Nokia.

What I wonder, is if Nokia can make a rubber boot for my phone. After all, it has been fairly rainy here in Brisbane this year.

Remember, “Trolltech has benefited greatly from the feedback the community has been providing while using Qt to develop free software. We respect the symbiotic relationship Qt has with the community and we wish to continue and enhance this relationship.”

So, keep on hackin’ ...read more...

System & Utilities

I’ve recently chatted with Inge, Franz, Alexandra and others that all seem to be in 5 cities as once - meeting up with other gearheads and going to conferences.

With this gauntlet of events, you all may be exhausted with all the effort and travel but just remember 1) It’s very appreciated by the community and 2) There’s people like myself a little jealous that would gladly take part.

I’ll see you all in oh…about 2 months.

Richard Johnson: Hardy KDE 4.1 Beta 1 Completed

System & Utilities

YES! It took me long enough with all of the work that was going on at the same time, but I would like to present you the ability to test out KDE 4.1 Beta 1 in Kubuntu Hardy right now! It seems we have worked out a majority of the quirks, but I can’t promise you that you may not get an overwrite issue with dpkg just yet. I do think we got them all covered, but you may have something nobody else does, so we didn’t catch it. We have been testing these packages since Saturday/Sunday and I have updated them as people reported issues.

To top it off, I have also included the KDE 4 PIM packages that contain applications such as Kontact, KMail, KOrganizer, Akregator, and more! The package name to get all of that is kdepim-kde4.

So, to install and test these new packages, please add the following to your Kubuntu Hardy /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu hardy main

Once you have done that and you already have a previous KDE 4 version installed, type ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): random bits

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)
  • The KDE4 versions of libkdcraw, libkexiv2, libkipi and libksane have all moved into kdegraphics. They live in the libs/ dir together and will be part of the 4.1 release. This means that it's much easier for any graphics related KDE app to rely on these very cool libraries being there.

  • I got P. a proper skateboard, a helmet and pads. Time for him to rip it up. Pictures forthcoming.

  • While in Berlin, I helped a friend move house. Yes, I traveled (according to Marble) 7504.63 kilometers as the crow flies only to end up packing bags and boxes through the U train stations of Berlin. I thought it was hilarious.

  • Someone asked in my blog comments how often Plasma has appeared in my dreams at night. Answer: embarrassingly often. Weekly is not unusual. So now you know.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Programming tips

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So I finally fixed a bug which has been causing some people a bit of grief, bug 160284. This bug involves crashes due to a couple of different things:

  1. A memory address was casted to a larger sized type, which was not aligned properly for that size.
  2. In addition, there were issues handling memory which was mapped from a file using mmap(2).

What’s the deal with alignment you ask? It deals with computer architecture. Pretty much every major computer architecture I can think of requires memory accesses of a datatype of a certain size to be on a memory address that is a multiple of the datatype’s size. For instance, if you were trying to read a 32-bit integer, the CPU would expect a memory address to be divisible by 4, since the integer takes up 4 bytes in memory.

Note that this is a glossing-over. Just because a datatype is 4 bytes long doesn’t mean that ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: creating fancy screenshots with Screenie

System & Utilities

Screenshot of SpeedCrunch composed using Screenie

There are tons of open-source projects, on SourceForge, Google Code, etc. If you check a project, most likely you see the screenshots first (don't be ashamed, to look at a screenshot is human). And there lies the problem. There is a fairly small amount of coders that are both very good at writing codes and composing good-looking screenshots.

So we had a terribly hot weekend in Oslo. Too hot to be outside the whole day. So after populating the wonderful weekend with banana brownies (I still favor the one with mango, though), fresh chocolate waffles (let's see if I can still continue the Sunday morning waffle tradition), huge delicious pizza (as usual I underestimated the size), pasta bolognese ala myself (but still can't beat the best one, so I was told), every now and then my own interpretation of alcohol-free SOTB (guess what it is. hint: a cocktail of course), ...read more...

Zack Rusin (zrusin): Animated interfaces

System & Utilities Lately I've been writing a lot about frameworks, today I want to take a step back and talk about a "technique". "Drunken master"/"Praying Mantis" kind of foo pertaining to animations.

Over the years of writing animated user interfaces I've developed a set of rules that I follow when writing animations. It's been a checklist that I've been following almost religiously. Much like my morning list of "1) Open eyes, 2) Check for dead bodies in the bed, 3) Around the bed, 4) if 2 and 3 are negative brush teeth and take a shower, otherwise prepare for a very bad day", which is the main reason why I never had a bad day in my life. Which is another good lesson to learn - very low expectations make for a very fulfilling life.

I've realized that those rules might be useful to others so I'll write a bit about them today. I guarantee you that if you'll follow them the animations that you'll add to any user interface will not make any of your users want to stab ...read more...

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): Those Kubuntu Specs in Full

System & Utilities Face of Jonathan Riddell (riddell)

The Ubuntu Develpers Summit finnished a week ago in Prague. Unlike conferences, summits have written output in the form of specifications which form the basis for work on Kubuntu for the next six months. You can find the Kubuntu ones on this wiki page.

We started with kubuntu-release-schedule where we discussed the possibility of moving the Kubuntu release schedule to match that of KDE. We decided against this in the end, but I think it was a worthwhile discussion to have. There would be goodness in the form of the latest and greatest KDE with each release, but it would also be a more buggy .0 version, would mean releasing with a 4 month old platform and would be quite a bit of extra work.

Kubuntu Intrepid Version makes the decision to move to KDE 4 by default (anything else is history). KDE 3 libs will still be available for applications without a KDE 4 version, but the desktop ...read more...

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): The shape of things to come

System & Utilities Probably by now most people have probably seen Marco Martin wonderful work on the new 4.1 theme I started on Tokamak in Milan.
Apart from the trivial artwork, it provides new theming possibility's into plasma. Like for example now clock pointers can have shadows ;).

So whats next?
4.2 Obviously!

I plan to spend allot more time working in plasma in the 4.2 series. And we have already started to work on those things we can improve :)This is just a first approach to some of the new concepts plasma introduces.

But this is all for the 4.2, for 4.1 there is still alot of work to be done before the artwork freeze so need to get back to it. ;)

Paul Adams: Let's Talk About Cake Baking

System & Utilities

Quality is a strange thing. Generally, it has two components (as I see it anyway):

  • The inhereted quality
  • The subjective quality

So, cake....

I'm partial to Devil's Food Cake. Seldom is so little food so calorific. Other people are maybe more inclined towards, say, Battenburg.

Generally, both these cakes have similar "inherited" quality characteristics: ingredients, recipe, skill of the baker etc. I hope we can all agree that with better ingredients in the hands of a skilled baker will generally get a better cake. For any given cake. Of course this becomes horrendously recursive; what are the inherited and subjective quality characterstics of the ingredients, baker etc?

There is a subjective quality issue here, though. I don't like marzipan. It makes me feel ugly on the inside. So Battenburg really doesn't do it for me. Devil's Food Cake, however, is gooey, comforting and massively fattening.

Of course, we have the same issues with our software...

Wade Olson: Be free. KDE. (new image series starting)

System & Utilities

On our very own homepage, we’ve got an image right at the top with the text “be free.”  It’s a bit vague, but that’s kind of the point isn’t it?  Everyone should be asking “be free to what?

Well, that answer falls in line with the question “What does KDE mean to you?”  Hopefully people don’t gloss over such questions, and actually give it some thought.  For every person, the answer is going to be unique.  Maybe someone wants to “be free to use open file formats and standards” and another person wants to “be free to use their computer without pants.”  How KDE helps with that last one I’m not exactly sure, but it sure as hell doesn’t stop you from doing that, and we practically recommend it.  And no, I don’t mean that the computer isn’t wearing pants, but KDE doesn’t even care if that’s what you actually meant.

4.1 is now in its third trimester (only 6 months gestation ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 1 - busily going nowhere

System & Utilities

wow. last week seems like a long time ago.
soc, for me, started monday evening, when I spent a few minutes tossing together a quick hack and got this:
screensaver + clock
that made me pretty happy - I had a plasma clock, and I had a screensaver, with very little effort, and they were mostly getting along. there was just that pesky green background to get rid of.

after a few days of banging my head against walls, I finally conceded that qt and X11 just weren’t capable of making that background go away. not without awful masking hacks that would probably not be worth the effort. so, I have two possible ways of dealing with this: either make it depend on composite to show both widgets and the screensaver, or change how screesavers work. the former sounds a lot more likely. :)

anyways, I decided to put those troubles aside for next week, and focus on getting some basic groundwork laid. I got kde4 compiled on my desktop, fought with ...read more...

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): It didn't get any better

System & Utilities Back at home (finally). I had to spend 7 hours at the Airport in Salzburg (that city with Mozart and classical music entertainment stuff) because I was far too drunk to drive home. Of course I didn't just drink coffee and hack on neon+kde... because one doesn't get much sleep @ LinuxTag, I decided to catch up on that: after sleeping on the table and in a bathtub, I ended LinuxTag 2008 with a quite long nap at the Airport, in the parking garage, in my car :-D

Anyway. It was an awesome event, again!

In more interesting news ;-):
  • Neon KDE nightly packages for Kubuntu are building right now (i.e. heading fast towards publishing)
  • I hacked a bit on the openSUSE Build Service integration which is next on the todo
  • Apparently I became MOTU Mentor (I really have no clue how this happened)
