George Goldberg: Amarok Bug Day - Sunday 15th June

System & Utilities

In case there are some people out there who still haven’t heard, the Amarok bug day will kick off in just over 12 hours time. its going to be great! An exciting app like Amarok, combined with the satisfying work of bug triage makes for a perfect Sunday outing - and all from the comfort of you big, many-wheeled, rotating computer chair. No programming skills or previous experience required. Just lean forward in your executive chair and type /join #kde-bugs and you will become part of the action.

Matt Rogers (mattr): Thursday - 06/12/2008

System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)
  • Lots of meetings at work today, in fact, most of the morning was taken up by them between SCRUMs and an interview with a candidate for one of our Linux Application Developer positions. Poked at source code to try to figure out the various file formats and input/output flows of the project that I’m currently working on. Ran around in circles, mostly.
  • Got the rest of KDE 4.1 proper compiled. Need to get on extragear and playground now though.
  • Lounged around in the evening. Read another chapter in my “Practices of an Agile Developer” book. Lots of good stuff in there. Hopefully I’ll finish by the end of the weekend.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): maybe people will understand a picture.

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Sometime last night I started a "21 bug salute": pick 21 bugs and fix them one after the other. Closing bugs that are already fixed, are upstream bugs or are WONTFIXes don't count. Only bugs closed with patches do. Currently the count is 11 down, 10 to go. The goal is to be done before the weekend is through.

I keep getting interrupted, however, by the continuing fallout from what has become one of the biggest faith-in-the-community destroying events I've experience. Having read a couple more angry FUD filled blog postings on this matter, proving squarely just how confused people are at the moment, I figured a picture might help.

So here it is:

What you're seeing there is a Plasma workspace with 5 activities (aka "desktop Containments") zoomed out so that you can see them all. The third one in the top row ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Short Tip: Use composition effects in KDE 4 without fancy graphic cards

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
There is an easy way of enabling KWin’s composition capabilities even if you don’t have the possibility to run OpenGL. In fact, you can even activate composition within a virtual machine like VirtualBox.

Just right-click on a window title bar, choose “Configure Window Behaviour…”, click on “Desktop Effects”, mark the check box “Desktop Effects”, click on advanced options, and choose the “Compositing Type” XRender. Afterwards, most simple effects will just work, but effects like the cover flow window switcher, which require heavier OpenGL, might not work.

XRender compositing effects

You can see more screenshots at Ivo Anjo’s blog post about it. Thanks for the hint, Ivo :)

Lorenzo Villani: Kexi Web Forms earns new features

System & Utilities

I’ve just finished adding row editing support to my SoC project: Kexi Web Forms. At the moment it can view tables, list their contents, delete rows and edit them. There are still some problems like RFC1738-formatted strings decoding (especially the “plus” character is annoying) and some wrong assumption on primary key field index (which is now forced to be at the first position).

However a couple of screenshots are more than a thousand words ;-)

I’ve also added an Handler class as suggested by Jaroslaw.
Now few things are missing such as creating new records and a decent HTML template.

Stay tuned ;-)

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): KDE, plugins, GPL and closed source applications

System & Utilities Face of Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos)Here i was today, thinking about this stuff (yeah you can say i'm weird).

In KDE all of our core libs are LGPL so if someone owns a Qt commercial license he can write closed source applications using kdelibs.

In KDE we also have this nice technology called KParts that let's you load plugins for lots of things on runtime. One of the KParts possibilities is to load a KPart for a specific mimetype.

Let's say the above closed source application uses KParts to preview things, and the user of that closed source application decides to preview a PDF.

In that moment, the KPart system will lookup and load the OkularPart that is able of viewing PDFs.

And there is where my mind broke, OkularPart is GPL and is being used by a closed source application.

"NO! VIOLATION!" Does my mind shout, but how can the closed source developer prevent it? All he did is use a LGPL library, so, maybe this ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: TabletPCs: fix for xsetwacom

System & Utilities
We had some trouble with rotation of wacom input devices on openSUSE 10.3/11.0 (see bugs #387127, #399016 and #391466) if the screen content get rotated via the XRandR extension.

The source of the problem was the way 'xsetwacom --list' try to identify the configured wacom input devices. The tool try to find them based on the device name (Identifier in xorg.conf) which don't work if you set other names than cursor, stylus, eraser or pad. But this is what SaX2 do if you configure a Tablet, they get named 'Mouse[x]'. Because of this (the patched version of) krandrtray (KDE) and resapplet (GNOME) were no longer able to find the devices which need to get rotated with xsetwacom.

To solve the problem I ported and extended an old patch from Stefan Dirsch from 2005 to the current package/source. With this patch xsetwacom now check the xorg.conf for devices which uses the wacom driver and check then the Type field/option for the device type.

The upcoming openSUSE 11.0 contains the ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Comparing Krita and Photoshop

System & Utilities

One of the things people immediately notice when they see Krita for the first time is that we've got the same basic layout as Photoshop: toolbox on the left, palettes on the right and a single toolbar under the menubar. The second thing everyone notices is that Photoshop has nice, small widgets in their palettes, and we use ordinary Qt widgets. Qt doesn't provide any way to scale down widgets to, say, 80% (although we might use a QGraphicsView in the dockers with Widgets-on-Canvas...). KDE4.1 offers a "small" font setting that, when used, shrinks the dockers a little bit.

But... Do we actually grab more working space from the user than Adobe? The following image says not: it's a 1024x768 display screenshot of a maximized Photoshop 7 overlayed on a ditto Krita 2alpha8 screenshot, using the Oxygen style.

As you can see, our toolbox is a bit wider because of the Oxygen margins, but our dockers are a bit smaller. All-in-all, the working area is just as big as ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): shiny!

System & Utilities

whee! only thusday and already I have my goal for the week done. I have plasma-overlay displaying properly over the screensaver. on my laptop, where composite is on, I can see them both together. on my desktop, where composite is off, I only see plasma (and the screensaver process should be nicely suspended). I have a screenshot of the composited one, and as usual the code is up on gitorious. :)

I had to set up a dbus interface before this would work - need to pass the winid n’stuff. There are some nice techbase tutorials, but I still ended up banging my head against the wall a few times :P I’ve never worked with dbus before. still, in the end I managed to do everything in a way that feels nice. :) I’m quite happy that I managed to get cmake generating both the xml and the adaptor-class for me. :)

once dbus was working, then I had to get the window stacking order right, ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: KPowersave Test Cases

System & Utilities
To improve the quality of KPowersave I've wrote some test cases for the most important functionality and features of KPowersave and added them to a test plan in the internal Novell Testopia system.

Since Testopia isn't available for external people I've added the same test cases to the SVN repository of KPowersave (see here) so that every interested person can follow the instructions and report bugs and regressions. You can get the test case also as a tar.bz2 package from ftp or as plain text files here.

All cases are about KPowersave running under KDE3. Every test run, against the latest KPowersave (SVN) version, and bugreport (with the number or name of the failed test case) would be appreciated.

Martin Meredith: Dutch PHP Conference

System & Utilities

So, am sittig in my hotel room, after spending way too long getting here, drinking tea, and using up the Wifi.

It doesn’t actually start till tomorrow, so not much to say - but I shall probably blog some more.

Good night out tonight, with a few of the Speakers, some good conversation, though really dissappointed that everywhere stops selling food at like - 10pm. Which is about when we got to the hotel. I think I’ve had a single bitterballe (or however it’s spelt) - roll on breakfast tomorrow morning is all I can say - and dissapointed that the place we went to only had two kinds of beer, or wine…. :(

Still, all good fun, looking forward to tomorrow. Just not liking the fact I have a single bed. I haven’t slept in one for 6 years!

Benjamin Meyer (icefox): Linux Jounal

System & Utilities
Today I received my copy of the July issue of Linux Journal. Normally not blog worthy, but in this issue there is an article I wrote called "Using WebKit in Your Desktop Application" which walks through writing a small application with Qt and WebKit. This is the first time I have had an article published in a magazine and is very exciting.

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Forth and back again - having a look at Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1beta

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
Recently my distribution of choice, Fedora, published a new version, Fedora 9. This one featured KDE 4.0, and there were also KDE 4.0.80 packages available, and I decided to take a look at them. Unfortunately, I had to return to Fedora 8 and KDE 3.5.9 - but not for long, that’s for sure.

The background

Recently I wanted to try two new “tools” - Fedora 9 and KDE 4.1dev. The reason behind was that both came along with a whole bunch of new features. Fedora 9 promised full disk encryption, a new X-server, PackageKit, a new NetworkManger, Upstart and so on, while KDE 4.1dev promised me first and foremost KDE 4.x. I was still in KDE 3.5.9 because I had to write a thesis during the upcoming of KDE 4.0 and wasn’t able to switch. Therefore I decided to install Fedora 9 and afterwards update the system to KDE 4.80 with packages from kdeforge. ...read more...

  • Home in the evening, spent a couple of hours attempting to install OpenSUSE 11.0 on my laptop after seeing the prettiness at work. Although very pretty and the install being very fast, it was basically unusable for reasons I don’t remember.  Laptop will get Fedora 9 again tomorrow morning.

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Short Tip: Searching files and packages

System & Utilities

Tux
In case you ever compiled anything by hand you might have gotten an error message like this:

make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/lib/libacl.so', needed by `lib/kstyle_qtcurve_config.so'. Stop.
make[1]: *** [config/CMakeFiles/kstyle_qtcurve_config.dir/all] Error 2
make: *** [all] Error 2

There is obviously a file missing, in this case to compile a specific KDE 4 theme. There are now two ways of searching for the package which contains the file: either through the command line, or through an online package database.

The command line of course depends on the used package manager, here are some examples:

apt-file search libacl.so
yum whatprovides libacl.so*

Be aware that the asterisk (*) is very handy in case of yum - but leads to no results with the apt-tools. I cannot understand why they don’t support simple (!) asterisk search.

The package databases depend again on the distribution, but at least for the rpm based distributions there is one common ...read more...

Bram Schoenmakers: Returning to KDE programming

System & Utilities

Last months I barely spent time on KDE coding. This was due to an university software project which started in the end of January. It was C++, so I was quite OK with that. But the toolkit... we had to code our product in wxWidgets. *shrug* It's not fair to link from Planet KDE to my rant about wxWidgets somewhere on my site, so I won't do that. But I was very glad to do some Qt/KDE programming at last.

So the first thing I created was a little plasmoid, just to get back into 'our' style of programming. It's CommandWatch, which does nothing but shows shell command output in a customizable label. Quite straight forward, Qt/KDE/Plasma just make it incredibly easy and intuitive to create such thing.

CommandWatch in action

To be found in our SVN playground: playground-base/plasma/applets/commandwatch .

I hope to do some more coding once my exams are over and returned from my holiday. Maybe I'll have enough time to scratch all my itches I still have ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Comfy...

System & Utilities

Yesterday I suddenly realized that KDE4 is getting really comfortable to work in, even on my low-resolution (1024x768) laptop. Sure, I have to tweak a bit: all fonts are too big, the Oxygen colours are a bit too colourful, notify sounds need to be disabled, wallpaper changed. But that's simply the desktop equivalent of moving into a new house. I think I've got KDE4 configured just right now.

There are things that make me so totally go wow: the cover flow window switcher, the breath-taking new login splash, the panel resizer thingy... Krunner is much more useful and much easier to use than the old minicli. There are things that are a bit ho-hum: systemsettings doesn't do much for me, although it's comfy enough. I have to run KDE3's kpowersave to make my laptop sleep when I close the lid. And I don't like the extra space between lines, especially when using a monospace font like the old Misc Console. Akregator hangs very quickly.

But worst of all: I have broken Krita. The tools don't get activated anymore. Aargh!

Ryan Bitanga: Tiberian Dream

System & Utilities I suppose it's quite awkward for me to write my first post in this blog on a topic that doesn't really concern KDE. Moreover, most of you have no clue whatsoever who I am. Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Ryan Bitanga. I am a 21 year old KDE developer and user who began by using Mandrake Linux in 2000 and am currently using Kubuntu. You may have seen my name 2 or 3 times on aseigo's blog concerning KRunner. Well, most of the work I've done is for KRunner. :)

Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend as much time as I wanted on KDE lately. More pressing matters took center stage in my life and as of the past week or two something more interesting came up.

If the words "peace through power" ring a bell for some of you, you most probably got it from Command & Conquer. There was a project that tried to implement the original game, FreeCNC. 5 years ago, I wrote a patch for FreeCNC to support bindable ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): The Power of Plasma theming - a gallery of 23 themes

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
One of the most often mentioned concerns at the KDE booth at LinuxTag was the question if Plasma would force the user to have a black panel. While we did have a second machine showing another theme to resolve all doubts it showed that not all users now yet the power of Plasma theming.

KDE is well known for the possibilities to configure it just like you want. And Plasma is no exclusion of this rule. Instead, the theming is well documented and there are already many user themes available at kde-look.org.

However, the shots shown below were made with the KDE 4.1 development version, and not all Plasma themes were created or tested for that version. Please keep this in mind and be tolerant regarding smaller issues. Additionally, I picked almost all themes which were offered via the GetHotNewStuff dialog, ...read more...

Troy Unrau: Checking up on old articles, for shits and giggles; Praise for Polish Linux's KDE articles

System & Utilities So today I was reading the Polish Linux article, part of a series that is periodically covered KDE from SVN (to the delight and occasional flaming of many fans) and it reminded me of how I ended up with this Marketing thing in the first place. It's been just under a year since my last Road to KDE 4 articles went live, and for shits and giggles, I thought I'd revisit them to see what has held together through the last year, what ended up as vapour, and so forth -- For my amusement more than anything else, although it might be interesting to some. So I present...

The Road [From] KDE 4[.0]

My very first article published about KDE (in any media) was: The Road to KDE 4: SVG Rendering in Applications. It covered the (then) new SVG capabilities that were beginning to be exploited in various parts of KDE. I think I like the current KRunner graphics much better :) This has been a forward march since those days, with ...read more...

Lorenzo Villani: Getting the ZYpp Stack in Fedora

System & Utilities

In my spare time, when I’m not working on my GSoC project, I still update source rpms for the ZYpp package management stack.

It seems that with the latest releases of sat-solver, libzypp and zypper, the whole stack has become more stable on Fedora, especially, in the past few weeks I wasn’t able to update packages due to various resolver’s problems, but now it seems that "zypper up" does its job smoothly.

Having the ZYpp stack on Fedora would be a great step toward integration. The OpenSuSE folk is doing a great job on ZYpp to better support our repomd format and they’re providing the yum stack working out-of-the-box as well!

So, why don’t do the same thing on Fedora?

If you are interested, you will find the review requests on bugzilla, bug IDs are: 442714 (sat-solver), 447738 (libzypp) and 442714

Stay tuned ;-)

Gilles Caulier: digiKam Fuzzy Search tool under construction

System & Utilities

One month ago, with Marcel, we have works on a new sets of Search tools in digiKam for KDE4, called Fuzzy Search

During my digiKam presentation at LGM2008 i have introduced the concept to be able to search duplicates items around the whole collection of photos. But the concept is not just limited to find the similars photos by using copy, it even allows user to drawn a sketch of photo what user memories and shows photos what has similar shapes and colors as on sketch.

Petr Vanek: KDE4 rules… better said will do one day

System & Utilities

I’m brave man sometimes. You know, no coward nor chicken. So you know why I replace KDE4:STABLE with KDE4:UNSTABLE on my desktop machine. And voila — cool KDE4 has been ready after lunch (beans and sausages, realy healthy meal for hardcore workers). There is only one thing to say: “it’s much more better than its 4.0 sibling. Yep, it can be used now. Beer for all developers.” (OK, it’s three things to say to be exact).

My cool KDE4-trunk desktop

Of course you have to set some things to polish it after “vanilla” installation. First - to switch off text under icons because it’s stupid. Second - switch off rubber windows to prevent beans (menioned above) jump out of stomach. And third - set plasma theme for something non-blackish.

I can say I have observed only one popular Plasma crash. It was when I’ve leaved my home desktop unlocked for doggie. He loves to play with mouse. He clicked with it like an wild masturbating monkey.

  • Lunch, worked on the C++ support build time debug configuration while girls napped.
  • Dropped S. off at C.’s parents, then dinner out. Visited with C.’s parents for a bit after dinner.

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 2

System & Utilities

well, I pretty much covered it in my last post: I haz code now. yays.
since then I’ve cleaned up some little things and created my own containment without all the useless desktoppy stuff, so I’m back on schedule. :) I poked at the appearing-below-screensaver issue, and fredrikh gave me some pointers, but… I’d actually totally forgotten about that until a minute ago. luckily I still have the window open, so perhaps I’ll work on it tonight. looks like I also have to make a dbus interface for the lock process and the plasma one to talk to each other.

once I’ve got that dbus stuff running, I guess I’ll have to figure out once and for all whether there’s any feasible alternative to using composite.

actually, I just had an interesting thought, right this second.
see, for desktop containments, in 4.2 we’re planning to have background-drawing plugins, so that you can do things like using a folderview as a containment and having wallpaper in it too. I wonder… if a way to draw screensavers in ...read more...

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): Akademy 2008 status

    System & Utilities

    Hi Planet,

The registration for Akademy 2008 has been open for a week and a half now. After the initial rush during the first weekend the number of reservations for hostel beds was going up steadily.
Now the only hostel beds available are 4 on Friday the 8th, one on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday and 3 on Thursday, most in hostel Zandpoort in the city. For those staying in hostel Zandpoort, we still have a few beds available in hostel Roosendael on Friday the 15th and the list of recommended hotels on the website has been updated. Since most hotels in Mechelen are business oriented they are cheaper on the weekend nights, you'll find prices as low as ?59 per night.

Take a look at the pages for the Social Event and the Day Trip.
You'll read that we'll be partying with walking dinner and open bar on Saturday ...read more...
