Ryan Bitanga: Tiberian Dream

System & Utilities I suppose it's quite awkward for me to write my first post in this blog on a topic that doesn't really concern KDE. Moreover, most of you have no clue whatsoever who I am. Let me begin by introducing myself. My name is Ryan Bitanga. I am a 21 year old KDE developer and user who began by using Mandrake Linux in 2000 and am currently using Kubuntu. You may have seen my name 2 or 3 times on aseigo's blog concerning KRunner. Well, most of the work I've done is for KRunner. :)

Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend as much time as I wanted on KDE lately. More pressing matters took center stage in my life and as of the past week or two something more interesting came up.

If the words "peace through power" ring a bell for some of you, you most probably got it from Command & Conquer. There was a project that tried to implement the original game, FreeCNC. 5 years ago, I wrote a patch for FreeCNC to support bindable ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): The Power of Plasma theming - a gallery of 23 themes

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
One of the most often mentioned concerns at the KDE booth at LinuxTag was the question if Plasma would force the user to have a black panel. While we did have a second machine showing another theme to resolve all doubts it showed that not all users now yet the power of Plasma theming.

KDE is well known for the possibilities to configure it just like you want. And Plasma is no exclusion of this rule. Instead, the theming is well documented and there are already many user themes available at kde-look.org.

However, the shots shown below were made with the KDE 4.1 development version, and not all Plasma themes were created or tested for that version. Please keep this in mind and be tolerant regarding smaller issues. Additionally, I picked almost all themes which were offered via the GetHotNewStuff dialog, so there are themes ...read more...

Troy Unrau: Checking up on old articles, for shits and giggles; Praise for Polish Linux's KDE articles

System & Utilities So today I was reading the Polish Linux article, part of a series that is periodically covered KDE from SVN (to the delight and occasional flaming of many fans) and it reminded me of how I ended up with this Marketing thing in the first place. It's been just under a year since my last Road to KDE 4 articles went live, and for shits and giggles, I thought I'd revisit them to see what has held together through the last year, what ended up as vapour, and so forth -- For my amusement more than anything else, although it might be interesting to some. So I present...

The Road [From] KDE 4[.0]

My very first article published about KDE (in any media) was: The Road to KDE 4: SVG Rendering in Applications. It covered the (then) new SVG capabilities that were beginning to be exploited in various parts of KDE. I think I like the current KRunner graphics much better :) This has been a forward march since those days, with many ...read more...

Lorenzo Villani: Getting the ZYpp Stack in Fedora

System & Utilities

In my spare time, when I’m not working on my GSoC project, I still update source rpms for the ZYpp package management stack.

It seems that with the latest releases of sat-solver, libzypp and zypper, the whole stack has become more stable on Fedora, especially, in the past few weeks I wasn’t able to update packages due to various resolver’s problems, but now it seems that "zypper up" does its job smoothly.

Having the ZYpp stack on Fedora would be a great step toward integration. The OpenSuSE folk is doing a great job on ZYpp to better support our repomd format and they’re providing the yum stack working out-of-the-box as well!

So, why don’t do the same thing on Fedora?

If you are interested, you will find the review requests on bugzilla, bug IDs are: 442714 (sat-solver), 447738 (libzypp) and 442714

Stay tuned ;-)

Gilles Caulier: digiKam Fuzzy Search tool under construction

System & Utilities

One month ago, with Marcel, we have works on a new sets of Search tools in digiKam for KDE4, called Fuzzy Search

During my digiKam presentation at LGM2008 i have introduced the concept to be able to search duplicates items around the whole collection of photos. But the concept is not just limited to find the similars photos by using copy, it even allows user to drawn a sketch of photo what user memories and shows photos what has similar shapes and colors as on sketch.

Petr Vanek: KDE4 rules… better said will do one day

System & Utilities

I’m brave man sometimes. You know, no coward nor chicken. So you know why I replace KDE4:STABLE with KDE4:UNSTABLE on my desktop machine. And voila — cool KDE4 has been ready after lunch (beans and sausages, realy healthy meal for hardcore workers). There is only one thing to say: “it’s much more better than its 4.0 sibling. Yep, it can be used now. Beer for all developers.” (OK, it’s three things to say to be exact).

My cool KDE4-trunk desktop

Of course you have to set some things to polish it after “vanilla” installation. First - to switch off text under icons because it’s stupid. Second - switch off rubber windows to prevent beans (menioned above) jump out of stomach. And third - set plasma theme for something non-blackish.

I can say I have observed only one popular Plasma crash. It was when I’ve leaved my home desktop unlocked for doggie. He loves to play with mouse. He clicked with it like an wild masturbating monkey.

Finally - ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 2

System & Utilities

well, I pretty much covered it in my last post: I haz code now. yays.
since then I’ve cleaned up some little things and created my own containment without all the useless desktoppy stuff, so I’m back on schedule. :) I poked at the appearing-below-screensaver issue, and fredrikh gave me some pointers, but… I’d actually totally forgotten about that until a minute ago. luckily I still have the window open, so perhaps I’ll work on it tonight. looks like I also have to make a dbus interface for the lock process and the plasma one to talk to each other.

once I’ve got that dbus stuff running, I guess I’ll have to figure out once and for all whether there’s any feasible alternative to using composite.

actually, I just had an interesting thought, right this second.
see, for desktop containments, in 4.2 we’re planning to have background-drawing plugins, so that you can do things like using a folderview as a containment and having wallpaper in it too. I wonder… if a way to draw screensavers in ...read more...

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): Akademy 2008 status

    System & Utilities

    Hi Planet,

The registration for Akademy 2008 has been open for a week and a half now. After the initial rush during the first weekend the number of reservations for hostel beds was going up steadily.
Now the only hostel beds available are 4 on Friday the 8th, one on Tuesday, 2 on Wednesday and 3 on Thursday, most in hostel Zandpoort in the city. For those staying in hostel Zandpoort, we still have a few beds available in hostel Roosendael on Friday the 15th and the list of recommended hotels on the website has been updated. Since most hotels in Mechelen are business oriented they are cheaper on the weekend nights, you'll find prices as low as ?59 per night.

Take a look at the pages for the Social Event and the Day Trip.
You'll read that we'll be partying with walking dinner and open bar on Saturday evening and going on ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): wanted: backtrace for krunner heisenbug

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Short story: KSycoca is not thread safe, reentrant or anything else that might make it usable in a multithreaded application. This is true of many parts of kdelibs, actually. Well, guess what krunner does? Yep, run lots and lots of threads.

Between the runners themselves we share a "kdelibs lock" that prevents one runner from entering these sensitive bits of kdelibs while others are.

Unfortunately, the startup info is also in there and .. guess what .. uses KSycoca. So every once in a while, when things line up juuuuust right, a runner is (with the lock) fetching data from KSycoca when we get an appliation startup notification and *poof* there goes krunner.

I triggered this bug today, generated a backtrace and then, stupidity of stupidity, accidentally closed the backtrace window! Oh no! I need the backtrace to see exactly where in the startup feedback machinery we're hitting this problem so I can then track down the problems with accuracy (versus just guessing, even if my ...read more...

Fred Emmott (fred87): End of exams

System & Utilities Face of Fred Emmott (fred87)

Due to having finished my exams, I now have temporary freedom - so far this has led to:

    • Slamd64 12.1 is pretty much ready - there's a few bugs left on the bugtracker, but they should be fixed before release, and there's nothing major there
    • Watching all the Star Trek movies
    • Started on the original series
    • Fixed a few small issues with YANIHP on OSX, so, now, YANIHP works on all 3 major platforms:
YANIHP on Vista, OSX, and Linux

To restate: YANIHP is a Qt 4.4-based media player (which also depends on taglib), with no kdelibs dependency, and now is truly cross-platform. The latest code is available via gitweb and git.

Egon Willighagen: Fish: my next generation sh?

System & Utilities Casper introduced me to fish in a nice write up of functionality. Nice tip! I have been using BASH for a long time now, before which I used csh, IIRC. Oi, that was on the old Solaris days. Anyway, default settings are quite nice, but one thing I don't like so much is the abbreviated pwd in the prompt. At least, not for the full prompt. It would suite me best of the last two or three directories were not abbreviated, but could not find an option for that.

Workaround is to simply define a new prompt in ~/.config/fish/config.fish, where I changed it default prompt to use pwd instead of prompt_pwd.

    Benjamin Meyer (icefox): Broken hand

    System & Utilities

Broke my hand this evening and spent the rest of the day at the hospital, but I got the xray's on CD which is cool. I was in a bunch of pain after hitting my hand, but decided to go to the hospital a minute later when I noticed my knuckle was missing. I broke the bone attached to my pinky and the front part went down and slid under the back part. At the hospital they pulled the finger back out put a cast on my hand. So for the next three weeks I am down to only eight fingers. The best part was my irc message on #arora

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Looking for PDF with JPX streams

System & Utilities Face of Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos)I'm currently working on a patch for poppler that makes use of OpenJPEG to decode JPX streams instead of the xpdf inherited code because the inherited code does not work for some PDF and i think that there's no reason not to use an already existing solution if it works. And that's the question, i need more PDF with JPX streams to be sure my 170 lines of code + OpenJPEG can replace the 3200 of xpdf code without any regression.

    So if you could

    cd /
    find -name "*pdf" -exec grep -H JPXDecode {} ;

or as said in the comments

    locate -0 .pdf | xargs -0 -n 1 grep -H JPXDecode

and send me (aacid@kde.org) a link to the pdf or the file pdf itself of all the files that match.

    Lukas Appelhans: Shaman RC1 released

    System & Utilities

After just some days from Beta 3, we’re proud to bring you Shaman RC 1. We tried to make this release as bug free as possible, and we’re willing to release Gold in a short time.
Don’t get fooled by the relatively short commit log: there’s more than meets the eye compared to Beta3. All KDE4.1 users will be surely happy to see the huge progress the KRunner and the Plasmoid made. There were also some nice GUI improvements, and we finally fixed the odd sorting by size bug.
Also, we’re string freezed from now on, so please, contribute and translate!

    Here comes the whole changelog:

    Core:
    - Better Thread handling when reloading packages view
    - Corrected include guards
    - Removed introspection in DBus system due to some custom code needed

    GUI:
    - Faster startup and no freezes thanks to better Thread Handling
    - Avoid Horizontal stretching in Queue Dialog
    - Port Messages to Utf8 where possible.
    - Fixed sorting by size bug

    KRunner:

Chani Armitage (Chani): let there be code!

    System & Utilities

I just pushed the first bits of my soc code to my public git repo. :) the code is awful and hackish and probably has lots of problems besides those noted in the merge commit-message, but it runs and you can add widgets. :)

right now there are two main problems with it. first, the only way to stop it is with `kquitapp plasma-overlay`. it’s easy to hide it, but impossible to re-show it. second, when it’s started via the screensaver, it shows up *under* the screensaver. fun, huh? oh, and if you want to compile it, see README.git first. and be aware that it’s based on a copy of workspace/ that may not be entirely up-to-date (aren’t bic changes fun?). doing a git svn rebase seems to spew commit messages all over gitorious; I wish there was a way around that.

I’m hoping that ossi can help me get it running over the screensaver nicely, because that code isn’t always easy to understand. aseigo, ossi, sebas: if any of you have time, ...read more...

Cyrille Berger: Last week in KOffice...

System & Utilities The big news in KOffice this week is the released of a new Alpha. Among the nice stuff about this release, a lot of improvement on the odf support, sounds and notes in KPresenter. It's also the first release where we have binaries for three platforms linuxes, Windows and MacOSX.

But what makes me truly happy is that while KOffice, in general, is not ready to receive bug reports, since there are a lot of highly visible issues to solve, some applications are more ready, KSpread, Krita, Karbon and the report component of Kexi, and are open for bug reports, which is really exciting because it means we are getting closer to a final release.

Don't expect any update on what is going in KOffice from me in the next three weeks, since I will be in Paris without a KOffice build, and the European Football Cup will use a lot of my free time. Tom Albers: Wow, a new release of Mailody!

    System & Utilities

It has been a while, but now the time has come. We have made a new release: 1.5.0-alfa1. I think it is fair to explain why it took a while.

After the last release we started to work on Mailody4, this is the KDE4 version of Mailody. A lot has changed in KDE and we needed to adapt to it and help to make that happen. Not only the API changed, so we had to change the code, but also the buildsystem changed to CMake. But those are technical details.

More obvious is that we are now share the settings for incoming and outgoing mailservers with KMail and the rest of KDE. This means that when you switch between KMail and Mailody, you will not have to re-enter your settings.

Another big, big change is Akonadi. This KDE framework will be released in KDE 4.1 and we depend on it. So that means we do not longer use a SQLite backend for storing/caching the messages, we now use Akonadi. As that software is not completely finished, this will ...read more...

George Goldberg: KDE Pim Krush Day 2

    System & Utilities

After the first small but successful Krush Day, we are having another this Sunday. If you didn’t make it last time (or even if you did), please come along to #kde-bugs and help keep KDE rocking.

The following announcement will appear on the dot as soon as they resolve the technical difficulties, but since its past midnight here, and I can hardly stay awake any longer, I’ll post it here first.

    ———————-

This Sunday (8th June), the KDE Bugsquad will host a KDE PIM Krush day. The aim of the day will be to find and document as many of the bugs in the PIM applications of the upcoming KDE 4.1 release as possible. The day will begin at 0:00 UTC on Sunday and continue until the day is over throughout the world. Krush Days are an excellent opportunity for KDE users keen to make their first contribution to the KDE project. You don’t need to set aside a huge amount of time - as little as ten minutes will be enough to ...read more...

Joon-Kyu Park: python evaluator for krunner

System & Utilities i introduce a new krunner plugin that evaluates given Python expression, which could be useful for Python programmers.
in order to use this, expression must be provided with 'py=' prefix.
though krunner's autocompletion seems a bit unresponsive, i hope it would get better soon.

    the code is here.

and yeah, here is the obligatory screenshot:
