Stephan Binner (Beineri): openSUSE 11.0: Press Review

System & Utilities Face of Stephan Binner (Beineri)

The launch of openSUSE 11.0 was a big success and positive reviews keep showing up Smiling, two especially nice ones:

ars technica: This is a very strong OpenSUSE release with a lot of compelling improvements. OpenSUSE 11 offers the best KDE 4 experience out there and will continue to be our reference distribution for KDE testing.

linux.com: The openSUSE version of KDE 4 alone is worth the download [..] Including KDE 4 is not as big of a risk for openSUSE as it might be for other major distributions because of the conservative and intuitive way KDE 4 is set up. openSUSE has given me hope that I could actually like KDE 4.

Cyrille Berger: Nightly package build of KOffice for OpenSuSE

System & Utilities For a while, now, I have been making nightly package of KOffice for OpenSuSE (10.3, 10.4, 11.0) using the OpenSuSE build service. I haven't make a more public announcement until now, since I am using Debian myself I couldn't test them. But Simon Schmeisser (of the flake marble shape fame) told me that he used the package with success for developing is flake shape, so I will assume that the package work.

Here are link to repository for the various OpenSuSE version for which there is currently a built:

Lorenzo Villani: Kexi Web Forms: the new look

System & Utilities

Today I committed the new template, for comparison here are two images:

The old look

The new look: Hey! It looks like one other famous website…

Thanks to the KDE.org template kwebforms gains some usability and accessibility improvements such as support for printing, aural devices, etc. Tables are generated using caption and th tags with proper attributes and, as you can see, there’s a persistent table list on the left side bar.

I also cleaned-up the code a bit by removing duplicated (!!) includes, created some new useful functions to avoid copy&paste programming and added new forwarded declarations where possible.

Stay tuned ;-)

Matt Rogers (mattr): mattr.info down for update

System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)

mattr.info will be down, starting later today, to get a system update. I’ll be switching the distro from Gentoo to Fedora, so I have an easier time of maintaining it. Hopefully the downtime won’t last too long, but I have no idea how long it’ll last because i have no idea how long it’ll take. :) I’ll post another blog when we come back online

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): benchmarking virtual function calls in c++

System & Utilities This is a followup to my two previous blog entries...

In order to measure the speed overhead of virtual function calls, I wrote a simple 3-float vector class with a dot-product method. One version is done without virtual functions, all in a single Vector class. The other version uses a pure virtual base class VectorBase implementing the dot product, calling virtual getters to get the vector coordinates. Aside from that, there is no difference in the code.

The benchmark is here, and archive is here.

The results are impressive: the virtual version runs 3x slower than the no-virtual version.

Cool, now I'll have firm numbers to back up my design choices in Eigen :)

Simon, I hope that answers your request :)

Vyacheslav Tokarev (vtokarev): gsoc progress: khtml

System & Utilities

Hi, planet!
I’m Russian student working at Google Summer of Code (GSoC) on KHTML. For those who doesn’t know or doesn’t care about kdes’ gsoc students: my project is to implement SVG support for khtml. As you may know in kde3 it was ksvg project and it interacts together with khtml. But with porting to qt4 a lot changed and the important thing: ksvg wasn’t ported. So, say no for normal svg support in khtml4.0.x. However ksvg is being actively developed in webkit and my main goal is to port it to khtml.
I’ve started to work on my project very early. The first reason svg is huge and the second one I had to do some underlying work before I could start with svg.
I’m working in my own khtml branch: branches/work/khtml-blaze.
So far, I’ve implemented support for basic shapes: rect, circle, ellipse, polygon, polyline, path. Supported attributes (not much): fill, stroke, stroke-width, fill-opacity, stroke-opacity. It seems small, especially if you take Qt library and paint such elements, but it’s not that easy, ...read more...

Microsoft:

"ODF has clearly won. We sell software for a living. The ability to implement ODF in the middle of our ship cycle was just not possible. We couldn't do that during the release of Office 2007. We're looking forward and committed to doing more than [ODF-to-OOXML] translators."

Richard Johnson: Membership updates

System & Utilities

What a groovy week, no matter how busy it was! Yesterday I found out that among 3 other people, I am now an official member of the KDE e.V.. Thanks everyone for the support and the votes, as well as a congratulations to Gary Greene, Paul Adams, and Alexis Menard. I am honored to be a part of the wonderful KDE community and look forward to many, many, years of working together to make KDE the best!

On top of this news, I found out this morning that I have been approved as an Ubuntu Core Developer. This means that I now get to upload to the Main repositories, hopefully providing our current Kubuntu core developers a little relieve during the Intrepid cycle and in the future. I took the long and lazy route to core developer by taking my sweet arse time and just enjoying everyone in the community and enjoying the work that I have done. I look forward to the many, many, years of Kubuntu development.

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): Release of cvxprocessing-1.0-beta1 (+tomography)

System & Utilities

I’m releasing part of the code developed during my PhD. Those are tools useful in the field of convex processing, and more precisely to solve a problem called convex feasbility problem.

This is based on Qt4, and released mostly under the GPL (with an added restriction : you must cite my work if you use this). Oh.. and there are unit tests, examples, and documentation, too.

caution : rest of the post is for those mathematically oriented people, and no more related to free software.

The convex feasbility problem is to find a point in the intersection of closed convex sets inside a Hilbert space. Believe it or not, quite some real-life problems can be formulated as such, for examples some image reconstruction problems in medical imaging, or also in the field of signal processing.

There are a lot of algorithms to solve this, you can find more information about those in the bibliography of my papers, or those from my PhD advisor M. Combettes.

This code provides ...read more...

Tom Albers: KDE Startpagina

System & Utilities

In the Netherlands we have something called startpagina. It consists of all kinds of different prefixes and contains links to that subject. So we have linux.startpagina.nl, ubuntu.startpagina.nl, but that goes about every subject people can think of, there are 5,818 of them. Each page maintained by someone.

I discovered that there was no such thing like kde.startpagina.nl. So I created number 5,519 and filled it with all kinds of links I had stored in my bookmarks.

And now starts the fun stuff, I need your help! Send in the coolest KDE related links that you know so I can add them to the page. If you can check if it missing on the page that would be great, but could be hard for non-dutch speaking people. Send me a mail at tomalbers@kde.nl, leave a comment if you prefer that, or fill in the form here.

Adam Pigg: HTML Reports in Kexi

System & Utilities After some initial work, a re-think and re-design, and a re-implementation you can now get quite nicely formatted reports from Kexi in HTML form using some CSS magic.

Only text is implemented atm, so images, charts, barcodes are still to come, but the output is pretty close to the original page based version, as you can see at http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/htmlcss3.png and http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/htmlcss4.png.

There will also be a simplified table based version as an option.

Some samples are at http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/product_list.html (its 1.9mb representing 10000 records, so be warned ;) and http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/rainfall.html.

Enjoy.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): A note on KDE4 on FreeBSD

System & Utilities The process of cleaning up my desk has nudged me over half a metre to the right which is where my FreeBSD desktop -- sadly neglected these past few months -- sits. Switching from KDE4 to KDE3 is kind of jarring. The KDE3 world really is more boxy and I'm doubly impressed by the visual work done on KDE4 now. So my desire for KDE4 has spurred me to try out the current area51 ports tree. That requires a return to the use of CVS, which is a shock in itself, but the carrot at the end is attractive enough.

As per usual this kicks off a bunch of corner cases. I'm building on FBSD-7 with gcc 4.2.1 on an amd64. The ports setup forces this to ARCH=generic instead of ARCH=x86_64 which in turn gets me the (slow) generic atomic operations. There's also an & too many in those operations, but -- it's almost "as usual" -- I hear that's already been fixed upstream.

Crunching through the ports is time-consuming, and I really appreciate ...read more...

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): C++ techniques: part 1: curiously recurring template pattern

System & Utilities I've been thinking for a while that I should be blogging about some c++ metaprogramming techniques that I learned while coding Eigen:

  • 1. the curiously recurring template pattern

  • 2. "meta" versions of "if", "==", and other things

  • 3. expression templates

  • Of course these techniques have been "known" for a long time, since they were discovered in the 90's. Some of them are already used in KDE; I saw some use of 1. in KHTML/KJS, and 2 is quite commonplace anyway. Perhaps 3 is the least-known one, and the only one in which I'd have anything original to say.

Today let's talk about the curiously recurring template pattern.

Executive summary: this technique allows you, in certain cases, to get rid of "virtual" keywords, thus avoiding the overhead of a vtable and indirect function calls.

Let's look at the classical example below, which shows an abstract base class with a method to returning some data determined by the derived class -- something typically implemented using the ...read more...

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: Mp3tunes GSoC project status

System & Utilities This summer, I am mentoring Google summer of Code student Casey Link ( aka Ramblurr on IRC ). Greg Haynes: Introducing libinfinitymm

    System & Utilities

Now that exams are over I have been able to spend the past week getting to really work on my GSOC project. In this time I created a c++ wrapper for libinfnity, which is the library my project will be using. The git repository can be found on Gitorious. Libinfinity has a very flexible object oriented design (the online docs are AWOL, so heres my copy), and should make the rest of my project pretty straightforward. In order to implement the collaborative editing component you need to just supply an object which implements InfTextBuffer (now Infinity::TextBuffer), so making a Kate Document implement this interface should be a breeze compared to the glib/gmmproc funk I’ve been dealing with the past week. For the rest of the week I have a fair amount of testing/code scrubbing to get done, but hopefully not long after i’ll have some results to show off :) Now, back to ...read more...
