Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): W3C: Standardizing the widget landscape

System & Utilities

The World Wide Web Consortium is looking into the feasibility of standardizing desktop widgets. They have done a survey on the widget frameworks available in the market. The frameworks they have surveyed are Konfabulator, Windows Sidebar, Google Desktop Gadgets, Opera Widgets, Mac OSX Dashboard, Web-Runtime by Nokia, and Joost Widgets.

The survey was performed in the first quarter of 2008 and frameworks were chosen because of their perceived prevalence in the market place. Since KDE 4 was only just released and not available as a stable option for any distribution, W3C cannot be blamed for leaving out Plasma.

"The purpose of this document is to provide a holistic overview of the widget space" is what the survey says. It compares the different offerings and tries to unify the nomenclature for the different gadgets/widgets/plasmoids.

In addition to this document, W3C has published a document that "lists the design goals and requirements that a specification would need to address in order to standardize various aspects of widgets." So W3C is trying to ...read more...

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): Eigen2 as a vectorization library

System & Utilities A big issue for any math-oriented software is vectorization i.e. how to make use of instruction sets such as SSE or AltiVec. Unfortunately this seems to be very hard for the compiler to do automatically, and even with Intel's own compiler, with complicated C++ code such as ours, the benefits were small (like +25% with ICC and +5% with GCC).

Yet, the theoretical benefit of vectorization is huge: with SSE, computations of floats can become 4x faster, and more in certain cases. So what math libraries tend to do, is to write their own explicitly vectorized paths for each architecture (SSE, AltiVec...) they support.

This is what Gael Guennebaud did a few monthes ago in Eigen2. We now have generic wrappers for vectorized operations: they abstract the underlying architecture and packet format, and are template in the numeric type. They got specialized by Gael for SSE2 and SSE3 and by Konstantinos Margaritis for ...read more...

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Ark: some help on software design please…?

System & Utilities

The last few days I’ve been a little stuck on the Ark coding due to design decisions, but eventually figured a blog post to the community would get the right answers right away. (What I’m currently focusing on building is building a batch extract interface for ark, accessible through command line arguments and only shows the user the progress in a simple progress dialog, exiting when finished.)

Ark is divided into several parts:

  • part - the kpart along with the interface
  • app - the (relatively) trivial application that houses the kpart
  • kerfuffle - the extraction library base
  • plugins - the library plugins

The problems showed up when I tried to let the main app also take some arguments to instead of opening the file in a part, opening the part hidden and extracting the files one by one through it. It works fine with a single file, but once I want to do it sequentually I need some kind of a signal to do it sequentually. I went back and forth between several seemingly possible solutions, ...read more...

Johan Thelin: QCodeEdit

System & Utilities A spin-off from the Edyuk project has finally been released with a website of its own. The QCodeEdit project looks really promissing. What you get is a code editor with syntax highlighting for a range of languages (yes, you can add support for more languages) developed using Qt - i.e. 100% cross platform - and good looking as well.

Matt Rogers (mattr): Kudos to the bug triagers

System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)
  • Some recognition for the bugsquad: in the last month, there have been 140 more bugs closed than bugs opened, and I would guess that at least a little bit of that is due to the work that they’ve been doing on triaging Konqueror bugs.
  • Also, thanks to Andreas Pakulat, for going through the KDevelop wishlist bugs and knocking the number of open wishlists down by nearly 150. That’s awesome work!
  • The bugsquad will be hosting two! bug triage days for Kopete in the month of July. I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the community those days to get the Kopete bugs triaged a bit more, helping the few developers Kopete has to prioritize their work
  • Speaking of Kopete, as with any open source project, it could use some more contributors. Please email kopete-devel@kde.org if you’re interested in helping. Artists, coders, people interested in helping with the web site, bug triagers, all are welcome. Update:For those interested in coding, there is a Junior Jobs page at ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): Let’s be dynamic again!

System & Utilities Face of Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose)

Hands up in the air everyone! Please cheer for Daniel! ;-)
Dynamic playlists are back o/

Daniel, my Summer of Code student, has been working hard to get one of the most loved features of Amarok 1.4 back for Amarok 2 and probably made a lot of people very happy by doing that last week. He implemented a dynamic mode as basis for the biased playlists he will be working on next. First results can be seen now and it is going to be great. It already improved a lot over what we had in Amarok 1.4 because it is easier to discover, configure and use. And I am sure Daniel will continue to improve it and kick ass ;-)

You can read more about it in his status report for this week and of course try it yourself with Neon or your own build. Go read it!

Bertjan Broeksema: users, contributors, SoC and holliday.

System & Utilities

First of all, I was pretty shocked reading about the disappearing of Aaron and all the fuss around. One of the things I really liked, and still like about the KDE community was the nice atmosphere in the community. I still know how Adriaan encouraged me to write some code for some functionality I wanted into KPilot. And also Jason has been quite an inspirator the last years. They are just some of the guys that help the new comers to step over the doorstep and to join "the club". This is actually exactly what kept me from contributing to my distro of choice. (Yes I switched back again).

Now the question arose, what we need, user or contributors. (1, 2). I think that we need both of them. Even users that do not contribute directly to the project have some use. If only that they show to their family, friends, colleagues etc. that it ...read more...

Juan Carlos Torres (jucato): Life’s little (and not so little) annoyances

System & Utilities

So my life has somewhat stabilized again, partly thanks to classes starting (so no more MMORPG playmates) and partly to my own classes having started. I only have 2 subjects this semester, so I thought it’d be easy. But alas! Things aren’t always what they seem. Here’s a series of things that suck or things I suck at lately.

1. Symbolic logic is a bit like math, specially algebra. You get one symbol, just one sign, wrong, and you get a whole bunch of stuff wrong. So when your logic book has lots of typographical errors, specially in rules or principles that are supposed to be the foundation of all other stuff, then you know you’re in a world of hurt. And like algebra again, it’s not simply enough to leave the student with the rules and one or two examples. For first time students, you need to explain how and why an answer was reached. Unfortunately for me, I lost the logic book I had in college years ago, and I can’t find it again on sale (not that ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: return of the graphics dojo: OpenGL-accelerated widgets and Bloom effect

System & Utilities

After almost a year without any sign of life, Samuel and I decide that we should resurrect the Graphics Dojo, i.e. by populating it with some new fresh examples..

Being a graphics ninja, Samuel's first example is on how to (finally) put widgets on OpenGL viewport. This is now made possible thanks to Qt 4.4's new feature of adding widgets to the graphics scene. Check out his example code, it looks awesome and you can play with it for hours!

Qt widgets and OpenGL

Since I'm new to all this magical graphics world, my first example is however fairly simple: Bloom effect (with pure Qt of course). If you are an avid gamer, you know what I am talking about here. ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): Release Party

System & Utilities I just came home from my clausura now, and I should have gone to the Release Party at KDAB - that would have given me more.
I haven't written in a longer time now; please forgive me.
After the release of KDE 4.0 the kde-windows project decided to stay in trunk - most applications like koffice, amarok and kdepim aren't released yet anyway so no need to make other releases of the branch. Be aware that this might decrease stability - people might work more and change the codebase again.
That said - I will hopefully restart releasing new packages for mingw on my server again on monday night. There is some new stuff that works now:
Finally kdepim works again - that means applications like akregator, kleopatra and kontact work now. Kmail is built but has a big error which isn't solved yet - the checking for a running application are useless under windows. There is just one small thing for users of emerge: you have to build kdepimlibs first and then install kdepimlibs-test (from testing) over it.

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): Python: subprocesses after all

System & Utilities Back in September 2007 I was sitting with dipesh until late in the night on a very interesting problem:
We wanted to implement a "tee"-like class in python which would work as the same command under unix: get input via one stream, double the input and give it out into a file and into a stream (like sys.stdout). This shouldn't be a big problem but when you try to give this class to subprocess.Popen as one of the streams you will find out that Popen doesn't use the write function but instead uses the fileno() function of the fileobject. But there would be a workaround for that:
We use subprocess.PIPE for the wanted input stream, then we check regularly for any stuff within the pipe - that this will not work on windows one could expect.
The problem is that all available read processes will block execution if not enough bytes can be read.

The solution is called pywin32 and is a python package for windows. Mark Hammond from ...read more...

Erlend Hamberg: GSoC 2008: Vi input mode for the Kate kpart

System & Utilities Face of Erlend Hamberg

I’m one of the lucky students doing a Google Summer of Code project for KDE, and I would like to introduce my project.  I’m making a vi-like, modal editing mode for the Kate kpart. I’m doing this because many people—me included—find using a vi-like editor much more efficient and pleasant than using a non-modal editor. Especially for editing code. This will of course be an optional mode, and if you don’t want to use it, you will never notice it. This should be obvious, but I want to mention it because I have already gotten a reaction from a Kate user who were frightened to death when he heard the word “vi” and feared that I will destroy his beloved Kate. Fear not! :-)

My reference vi implementation is Vim, which is superior to the original vi in many ways. Especially text objects is a brilliant addition and will be supported by Kate’s vi input mode.

Sebastian Kuegler: benchmarking XRender performance, how to file nvidia bugs

System & Utilities Blauzahl asks where to file bugs we encounter in the nvidia drivers. Last night, after my previous blogentry Fredrik told me he disagreed that it's hard to find nvidia engineers that can help with this kind of performance problems. It seems some hang out in #xorg-devel, and our planet admin Chris Lee is currently working on the NVidia Linux team as well. Fredrik pointed me to a benchmark that measures the performance of various XRender calls. Running it shows that most of the tests are very fast (1 - 20 milliseconds) or very slow (most between 8 and 16 seconds). That means lots of operations take 400 times as long as others. On my notebook's ati x1300 using the fglrx driver, I get results of 20 milliseconds for the 'faster' operations. Not a single test takes more than 2.5 seconds. So nvidia is faster , but only for some tests. Overall, ATI performs better in these tests. And then maybe those operations can be accelerated in the driver. xrenderbenchmark takes ...read more...

Seb Ruiz (sebr): Amarok 2: Artwork is Back

System & Utilities Face of Seb Ruiz (sebr)

My last couple of weeks has been spent focusing on getting cover art back up to scratch in Amarok 2. Cover art really adds a lot of spice and colour into the UI of the application, especially now that we are showing the artwork in the collection browser, context view and playlist. For those of you who are supremely organised, the collection scanner will now trawl through directories and try to pick up images it thinks are relevant to the songs which are being scanned. Embedded artwork is not implemented currently but it is certainly on the todo list.

Most of the relevant actions can now be executed for artwork: fetching from amazon, setting a custom image, removal and full size display. Music lovers with non English songs can now rejoice because we’ve also fixed some problems fetching artwork for album/artists that have accented characters, which Amazon seemed to have problems with. Another cool feature that we’ve experimented with is automatic cover fetching if there is an album with ...read more...

Girish Ramakrishnan: Getting started with KWord Development

System & Utilities About 2 months ago, I started working on KWord ODF support. Getting productive working on KWord is no mean task - apart from the mandatory C++/Qt knowledge, one need to know Scribe, KDE, KOffice libs and KWord. I knew only C++/Qt and basic Scribe.

Thankfully, to add small ODF features to KWord, one can conveniently ignore most of the code base and concentrate on 4-5 files. Which is what I have been doing - committing like crazy to 4-5 files :-) Of course, I have never been at ease with this, I usually don't develop this way but I wanted to have something up and running asap. Now that we (Roop and I) have most of the (supported) ODF test automated (63 in all), I took a 1 week break to read and understand the KWord/KOffice code.

If writing a word processor is not complex enough, KOffice/KWord code is extremely complex thanks to all the code sharing between the koffice applications, libraries, plugins/flake, kparts. So, I thought I should do something on my part to make KWord more ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Improvements in KDE’s Folderview

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
One of the most interesting new features in KDE 4.1 is the new Folderview plasmoid. With the release of KDE 4.1 Beta 2 several small improvements.

Folderview is an awesome plasmoid which makes it possible to show the content of a folder on a screen. It also is the first step to say good bye to the traditional way of storing links and folder on the desktop itself - the idea is to now store the data on the desktop but to show the data from some place directly on the desktop as if they would be there.
Everyone who ever had to manage - and especially backup - larger computer setups will recognize the abilities of folderview with relieve!

With the first introduction of Folderview the basic functions where there, but several smaller aspects were missing. These have now been fixed in a recent KDE 4 version: it is now possible to simply ...read more...

Troy Unrau: Does KDE even need (certain) users?

System & Utilities So, this is a rant. Please don't quote me on this article, as my opinion might have changed a day after posting. In the meantime, there's a rant I've been meaning to write for a long time that I've put off since I'm officially wearing the KDE Marketing hat. Tonight, I take it off.

"Does KDE even need users?"

If the users are harming the project, we don't need those users. I've hesitated to tell these users to (quoting the recently deceased Carlin) "go outside and play hide and go fuck yourself."

From a cynical point of view, the only real benefit to KDE of having users is that some users turn into developers. This directly benefits the KDE project, the code, and the KDE developers who are writing the software (essentially) for themselves. Marketing in Open Source is a bit of a misnomer anyway, as we don't really benefit directly from having more users. Sure, every user loves to be on the winning side of the KDE-Gnome tug-of-war, but in all honesty, if you're harming the ...read more...

Jes Hall (canllaith): Even Easier to Love

System & Utilities Face of Jes Hall (canllaith)

The very day the EeePC 701 was available in stores in New Zealand, swept up in the internet hype, I bought one.

The hype was well deserved. The original Eee has been credited with turning the notebook market on it’s head. While the concept of the netbook has been tried before, this time, we were ready for it.

I had a lot of fun putting my EeePC through its paces for Linux Journal. I regularly tested its limitations, carrying it around for internet access and writing while out at cafes and travelling. It’s spent quite a few hours perched on racks in server rooms displaying build documentation or providing me internet access over HSDPA modem. I loved my EeePC, but I did find myself wishing Asus would market a premium model. I was willing to pay a little more to get a little more.
