Sebastian Kuegler: benchmarking XRender performance, how to file nvidia bugs

System & Utilities Blauzahl asks where to file bugs we encounter in the nvidia drivers. Last night, after my previous blogentry Fredrik told me he disagreed that it's hard to find nvidia engineers that can help with this kind of performance problems. It seems some hang out in #xorg-devel, and our planet admin Chris Lee is currently working on the NVidia Linux team as well. Fredrik pointed me to a benchmark that measures the performance of various XRender calls. Running it shows that most of the tests are very fast (1 - 20 milliseconds) or very slow (most between 8 and 16 seconds). That means lots of operations take 400 times as long as others. On my notebook's ati x1300 using the fglrx driver, I get results of 20 milliseconds for the 'faster' operations. Not a single test takes more than 2.5 seconds. So nvidia is faster , but only for some tests. Overall, ATI performs better in these tests. And then maybe those operations can be accelerated in the driver. xrenderbenchmark takes more...

Seb Ruiz (sebr): Amarok 2: Artwork is Back

System & Utilities Face of Seb Ruiz (sebr)

My last couple of weeks has been spent focusing on getting cover art back up to scratch in Amarok 2. Cover art really adds a lot of spice and colour into the UI of the application, especially now that we are showing the artwork in the collection browser, context view and playlist. For those of you who are supremely organised, the collection scanner will now trawl through directories and try to pick up images it thinks are relevant to the songs which are being scanned. Embedded artwork is not implemented currently but it is certainly on the todo list.

Most of the relevant actions can now be executed for artwork: fetching from amazon, setting a custom image, removal and full size display. Music lovers with non English songs can now rejoice because we’ve also fixed some problems fetching artwork for album/artists that have accented characters, which Amazon seemed to have problems with. Another cool feature that we’ve experimented with is automatic cover fetching if there is an album with more...

Gilles Caulier: digiKam TIFF/DNG Metadata Writting Mode on The Fly Done

System & Utilities

Like i have previously said in this post, for the next major release of Exiv2, the Tiff metadata writting mode will be available.

Duing a lack of Exif metadata support in libtiff, we cannot use this library to backup all metadata from a converted RAW file. We cannot use this library to play only with metadata without to touch whole image data. Of course we use it in editor to convert image to Tiff, but that all

Girish Ramakrishnan: Getting started with KWord Development

System & Utilities About 2 months ago, I started working on KWord ODF support. Getting productive working on KWord is no mean task - apart from the mandatory C++/Qt knowledge, one need to know Scribe, KDE, KOffice libs and KWord. I knew only C++/Qt and basic Scribe.

Thankfully, to add small ODF features to KWord, one can conveniently ignore most of the code base and concentrate on 4-5 files. Which is what I have been doing - committing like crazy to 4-5 files :-) Of course, I have never been at ease with this, I usually don't develop this way but I wanted to have something up and running asap. Now that we (Roop and I) have most of the (supported) ODF test automated (63 in all), I took a 1 week break to read and understand the KWord/KOffice code.

If writing a word processor is not complex enough, KOffice/KWord code is extremely complex thanks to all the code sharing between the koffice applications, libraries, plugins/flake, kparts. So, I thought I should do something on my part to make KWord more more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Improvements in KDE’s Folderview

System & Utilities

One of the most interesting new features in KDE 4.1 is the new Folderview plasmoid. With the release of KDE 4.1 Beta 2 several small improvements.

Folderview is an awesome plasmoid which makes it possible to show the content of a folder on a screen. It also is the first step to say good bye to the traditional way of storing links and folder on the desktop itself - the idea is to now store the data on the desktop but to show the data from some place directly on the desktop as if they would be there.
Everyone who ever had to manage - and especially backup - larger computer setups will recognize the abilities of folderview with relieve!

With the first introduction of Folderview the basic functions where there, but several smaller aspects were missing. These have now been fixed in a recent KDE 4 version: it is now possible to simply more...

Troy Unrau: Does KDE even need (certain) users?

System & Utilities So, this is a rant. Please don't quote me on this article, as my opinion might have changed a day after posting. In the meantime, there's a rant I've been meaning to write for a long time that I've put off since I'm officially wearing the KDE Marketing hat. Tonight, I take it off.

"Does KDE even need users?"

If the users are harming the project, we don't need those users. I've hesitated to tell these users to (quoting the recently deceased Carlin) "go outside and play hide and go fuck yourself."

From a cynical point of view, the only real benefit to KDE of having users is that some users turn into developers. This directly benefits the KDE project, the code, and the KDE developers who are writing the software (essentially) for themselves. Marketing in Open Source is a bit of a misnomer anyway, as we don't really benefit directly from having more users. Sure, every user loves to be on the winning side of the KDE-Gnome tug-of-war, but in all honesty, if you're harming the more...

Jes Hall (canllaith): Even Easier to Love

System & Utilities Face of Jes Hall (canllaith)

The very day the EeePC 701 was available in stores in New Zealand, swept up in the internet hype, I bought one.

The hype was well deserved. The original Eee has been credited with turning the notebook market on it’s head. While the concept of the netbook has been tried before, this time, we were ready for it.

I had a lot of fun putting my EeePC through its paces for Linux Journal. I regularly tested its limitations, carrying it around for internet access and writing while out at cafes and travelling. It’s spent quite a few hours perched on racks in server rooms displaying build documentation or providing me internet access over HSDPA modem. I loved my EeePC, but I did find myself wishing Asus would market a premium model. I was willing to pay a little more to get a little more.

When the EeePC 900 was announced it felt like they were reading my mind.

The Linux version of the Eee900 has a 9” screen at more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): Release of Yzis-1.0-alpha1

System & Utilities

Ok, here it is, things have finally settled and we are happy to bring you the first alpha release for Yzis. The foundations are stabilizing, and we are now focusing on fixing bugs and porting to different architectures, OSs, and interfaces.

What you have so far :

The most noteworthy missing feature is the KDE embeddable component, we are aware of this, and this is the main thing we shall work on after 1.0 is out.

At this point, we are not yet asking for broad testing, but developers not afraid of bleeding edge are encouraged to test it out. If you can help with porting/solving bugs, this is of course even better.

You can join us on #yzis on freenode to discuss all of this.

The web site has been updated, and more...

Will Stephenson: openSUSE 11.0 kdepim4 update strategy

System & Utilities

openSUSE 11.0 is out and with it are a set of KDE PIM (Personal Information Management) packages from KDE 4.1. This is part of the KDE 4 desktop choice and they have been extensively patched to work with the KDE 4.0.4 libraries on 11.0, and contain backports from KDE 4.1 trunk. They have been tested thanks to our devoted opensuse-kde community, but fixes are still happening in trunk so here's the skinny on what will happen via online update as we approach KDE 4.1:

  • openSUSE 11.0 released with kdepim 4.1beta1 DONE
  • post-gold-master online update containing selected critical bugfixes DONE. This fixes some ugly bugs (kde#153740, #156319, #156990, #158354, #162673, #162707, #162711, #162897, #163159, #163268, and #163408, and the infamous bnc#398807 Kontact plugins missing beastie - we like to take care of our users
  • pre-4.1 update when we feel 4.1beta2 has settled down to be an improvement over the above.
  • Update to 4.1 final upon release

Anyone using the KDE:KDE4:Factory:* repositories in the buildservice can ignore this, as they are updated roughly weekly.

Mark Kretschmann (markey): Amarok Scripting SoC Project - Week 3

System & Utilities My SoC student Peter Zhou has interesting news about his progress with Amarok 2's all-new scripting system. I'm pasting his blog here, as he is not yet aggregated on Planet KDE.

Before that, let me fill you in with the details about our plans for scripting in Amarok 2:

  • Amarok scripts are based on QtScript (= JavaScript)

  • Scripts are running in-process, as opposed to Amarok 1's way of running them in a separate process

  • The new script manager will be able to do version management, and possibly automatic upgrades

  • The scripting API will be much richer and it will be possible to extend the Amarok GUI with scripting

What you can expect is something similar to Firefox's extensions. With one big difference: Amarok still aims to provide a rich feature set out of the box. We believe that an application should be usable without forcing the user to do Lego (TM) building :-)

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Making Ark’s extraction interface more efficient

System & Utilities

Hello planet, my first post here. Be nice to me. I will start directly with the thing I’ve been hacking a bit on the last few days. Ark has always been one of those apps that does what it’s supposed to do, it extract files, but it doesn’t really make any attempt to be efficient or smart at it. For example, extracting a file required you to press the extract files button, next click another button to open the folder selector, choose the folder, return to the previous dialog and then press OK once more as seen here:

To reduce the number of clicks required for this operation, I hacked a bit around and discovered it was actually trivial to just set the extraction dialog to inherit from the KDE default folder selection dialog and add my own widgets, and got the result shown below. I also added a list view where the recent folders used can be displayed. more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): En-route quickies

System & Utilities En-route Quickies

- Being able to resize swap on ZFS is darn useful.
- Speaking of swap, the compile jobs for KDEPIM's groupwise SOAP stuff are too damn big.
- The Dutch do not understand the concept of reserved seats in trains.
- The word "blogbitch" is mine and is something I do a little too often.
- "It's a feature, not a bug" explains so much about konsole.
- The old decaying red-brick factory outside Eisenach is beautiful.
- A countryside - even if I'm zipping through it in an ICE - with dirt paths and no fences and trees and confused old architecture and a beat up truck has an immediate positive effect on my stress level.
- An eight hour train trip is a great way to log runtime problems in KDE4 in Solaris; writing them all down is problematic.
- Solaris manpages somehow manage to miss answering some essential questions like "how do I make an interface do DHCP on bootup?"

Celeste Paul (seele): AutoMagic and KGRUBEditor

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)

KGRUBEditor will be a configuration UI and System Setting module for managing GRUB in KDE. It is beginning to turn into a very nice configuration tool, thanks to the skills and patience of Konstantinos Smanis (Artemis_Fowl). There are still some minor style-guide related UI issues to fix, such as aligning the labels to the right along a center line and wording in screens and warning messages. Also, the assisted workflows (Add/Edit Entry, Create Password) could use some tweaking, but they’re in decent enough shape to release now/fix later.

However, we still haven’t solve the problem of AutoMagic managing kernel entries. AutoMagic is what delayed development of a KDE GRUB configuration tool over a year ago and only now do we have a developer brave enough to work on it (actually, I don’t think he was aware of AutoMagic until after he began coding :). Managed kernels (packaged kernels installed and updated through the Debian grub-update tool) are wrapped inside AutoMagic headers in menu.lst. AutoMagic is good because it makes more...

Alexander Neundorf: CDash: kdelibs dashboard online

System & Utilities

Since a few days Kitware is hosting a cdash dashboard for kdelibs. The ctest config file in kdelibs svn has been adapted accordingly.
So if you run now "make Experimental" in kdelibs the build and test results will be submitted to .
It would be very useful if we could get nightly builds for OSX, FreeBSD, Solaris and Windows, so we can make sure they stay compiling.

I tried it with an Experimental build. On the first run, the tests where not built, so they were all marked as "Not Run". To enable them the cmake option "KDE4_BUILD_TESTS" has to be enabled. I did that and did another "make Experimental". Now the tests where executed. I did this while working in a KDE3 desktop.
Apparently some things fail then, and I had to kill a few processes, otherwise some tests where hanging for a long time. I guess we could set the timeout lower, to 1 minute or so. But more...

Troy Unrau: A quick survey of KDE 4 Apps

System & Utilities So I spent the last few days rebuilding trunk and playing with some of the applications that don't ship on the same release cycles as KDE itself. Things like Amarok, KOffice, KTorrent, K3b, and more. So I figured I'd give a few comments on how the development of these things are going, especially KOffice 2. So, some thoughts on those applications that make the KDE environment the integrated, wonderful thing that a only full desktop environment can give.

Amarok 2 gets enough press, they don't need me to talk up how the cover downloading works now, or how I actually have to come up with new ways of crashing it because the old ones don't work... anyway, they're in bug-fixing/stabilizing mode now it seems, which is good news for all the amarok junkies out there.

KOffice 2 is moving along with the limited but highly talented manpower that they have, releasing alpha after alpha showing where the suite is heading. Unlike MS, which released Office XP before Win XP, KOffice has usually lagged behind the schedule of major more...

Wade Olson: Even More Hand Waving

System & Utilities

Do you know why I’m waving?  Because in just a couple of weeks I’ll be waving goodbye temporarily to the most popular country in the world (the U.S.) and waving hello to everyone at AaKkademy.  It’s a great time to be from the States, everyone treats you like a rock star and reminds you how much they love our foreign policy.  Or so I assume.  Not sure what “yusuck” and “gobakhohmyanky” mean in various native tongues.  Babelfish doesn’t seem to help.

Booked my flight and just secured my hotel room last night.  This time of year, I’d expect to start seeing blog posts daily on AaKkademy travel plans and SoC progress, but things have been relatively quiet.  What gives?  Let’s see some entries on both. more...

Celeste Paul (seele): More Hand Waving

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)

Oy vey, this was not a personal stab at you, Aaron. You just happened to the developer the emailer mentioned. Next time I’ll be careful and anonymize.

Some general points:

  • This is not my comment, these are comments I heard from the user community.
  • Distros are making it easier for regular users to get development previews
  • More than just developers and early adopters are reading Planet, but they might not understand how deep in the development process they are following
  • We have regular users with access to development software who are getting frustrated with KDE because they can’t do what they see on TV
  • This has nothing to do with usability; it is before usability is an issue so don’t put words in my mouth

It was a simple research question: “what effect [does] reading about and seeing developer screenshots has on our user base; especially after they try the latest beta release and realize they can’t more...

James Ots: Eating my own dog food

System & Utilities I've been running openSUSE's KDE 4.1 snapshots on my machine for a while now, and despite the occasional programme falling over (usually konqueror or akregator at the moment), it's being a great experience. I'm particularly addicted to KNetWalk, which is probably going to give me RSI, but I can do it so fast now that I need a new challenge. So I thought I'd get the source and have a go at making it harder. So I did. Get the source, that is. I updated my SVN version of the code, compiled it, and it all compiled without a hitch.

Hang on. That can't be right. I never manager to compile KDE without problems. I must have made a mistake. So I tried logging into my newly compiled KDE, and it works too. I guess KDE is a little better than it used to be!

Anyway, I was so impressed by how easy it is right now, that I had to blog about it. I haven't done any KDE coding for a while, so I'm not exactly eating more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): wave your hands in the air!

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)I like waving my hands in the air. It's fun, mostly because it's one of those liberating, body moving, get the blood flowing things to do. It expands your personal space and it's hard to do without smiling. It's also great for getting someone's attention or moving along with a crowd at a concert during the slow songs. Unfortunately, hand waving doesn't do much more than that.

Hand waving is pretty much exactly what I think of when I read Celeste's blog entry about KDE4 today.

I'm sure it was liberating to write, but sadly I don't know what to do with it. For instance, she quotes some user who says they can't figure out how to make their Plasma look like what I use. There's no mention of what they can't figure out, what screenshot they were looking at ... nothing.

I don't know if the problem is that they are using 4.0.x, or 4.1beta1 or if they've run into more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): It’s the end of the world as we know it?

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

On Slashdot (don’t run!), there is an article about whether or not a particle accelerator being built called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) could actually generate particles that “might destroy the world”.

I thought the very notion sounded stupid on its face, but had no non-intuitive way to explain way. But someone went and made a more logical argument based on the fact that the Earth is being constantly bombarded by much more powerful streams of energy constantly (called cosmic rays). I’d known about cosmic rays since in theory they can show up on our radiation detectors, and indeed you could tell if we were submerged or surfaced based just on the radiacs in the engine room thanks to the shielding provided by the ocean.

The more powerful cosmic rays are many, many times more powerful than anything the LHC would be able to produce, and since no particles have been created in the more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 4

System & Utilities

I took a bit of an unscheduled break this week. didn’t write any code until sunday (although I did read and think about and talk about code). :) it was nice to just relax for a while.

unfortunately I haven’t *quite* got my goal for the week finished. input is somewhat partially working; I can click on things, and keypresses are going through, so the basic stuff is there. contextmenus and plasma-dialogs work, although they’re drawn below the semitransparent containment background (it’ll be fully transparent later, but this is useful for debugging). the add-widgets dialog and config dialogs aren’t showing up, but I’m sure they’re out there somewhere. ;) what bugs me right now is that qactions’ keyboard shortcuts aren’t working at all, and I’m not sure how to solve that one.
the code for this stuff is currently in the ‘input’ branch on gitorious.

if I’m lucky I’ll get those bugs ironed out tonight or tomorrow and be back on track for this week’s goal - requiring a password to unlock plasma. and if I’m not more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): From Point A to Point B?

System & Utilities

I got asked, via e-mail, today how I went from a retail pharmacy store manager to systems architect and it was such a good brain dumping that I figured I’d blog it too. =:) Here, then, is a brief overview of how I got from .A->.B.

  • met the woman I knew I wanted to marry at Taco Bell. realized I couldn’t support a family on Taco Bell wages, so started looking for work elsewhere as I was still trying to finish college.
  • started working at a tiny little Thrifty Jr. in Rancho Bernardo, California with my amazing friend Brad Prosek, stocking shelves and scooping ice cream.
  • went into shift manager training for Thrifty in Ocean Beach, CA.
  • got promoted to second assistant manager.
  • got married shortly thereafter, still trying to finish college to be a Math teacher.
  • somewhere around here (1994-ish?), I bought my first real home PC (non-Apple) and started getting involved in Open Source.
  • accidentally got promoted to first assistant manager.
  • had to drop out of college. was told I could either work or go to school, more...

Kyle Cunningham: Stuck on the Roof

System & Utilities

Here's to George Carlin.  We'll all miss him on top of that damn roof.  I'll make sure to have a drink in his honor.

Rex Dieter: Rex's FUDCon redux

System & Utilities Kudos to those coming to my aid wrt my own accommodations, including Mike McGrath and J5.  Mike shared his excellent wit as well as sysadmin-fu (iscsi+raid!, csi) and fedora infrastructure goodies (asterisk). J5 and I had a nice chat at FUDpub about the state of gnome and kde, and taking advantage of future opportunities for collaboration... via shared technology and potential future joint (guadec, akademy, whatever) sites.

One of my favorite aspects about FUDCon is getting valuable facetime with folks I hadn't met before.  Highlights include meeting Smooge, unselfishly sharing a wealth of fantastic stories and hammering on epel-related business; Andrew Overholt, busy working some java-fu magic to get Alfresco into fedora; and Clint Savage, utilizing his own brand of media-fu magic by experimenting with streaming audio and video of FUDcon talks.

I also helped lead a couple of barcamp sessions, "How to be a package maintainer" and "the care and feeding of SIGs", and was very happy with the results of both.  The former, went through describing each step and answering more...

Lorn Potter: QtWebKit and Gutenbrowser

System & Utilities

After many moons, I have started to work again on my personal project, Gutenbrowser. It is in need of much maintenance and love.

Since Qt finally has a good webview, QWebView, I can finally start working towards version 1.0! With very little work, gutenbrowser can now show Gutenberg Project etexts that come with images.

Since I have a macmini at home, I can distribute Mac binaries, as well as Windows and a few Linux embedded devices (Openmoko Neo and possibly Nokia’s n8×0’s Qtopia )
and with the help of Petter Reinholdtsen, fix a few bugs and be in the standard Debian distribution.

For those that do not know of the Gutenberg Project, there are over 25,000 free books available!
