Adam Pigg: HTML Reports in Kexi

System & Utilities After some initial work, a re-think and re-design, and a re-implementation you can now get quite nicely formatted reports from Kexi in HTML form using some CSS magic.

Only text is implemented atm, so images, charts, barcodes are still to come, but the output is pretty close to the original page based version, as you can see at http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/htmlcss3.png and http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/htmlcss4.png.

There will also be a simplified table based version as an option.

Some samples are at http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/product_list.html (its 1.9mb representing 10000 records, so be warned ;) and http://www.piggz.co.uk/kexi/rainfall.html.

Enjoy.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): A note on KDE4 on FreeBSD

System & Utilities The process of cleaning up my desk has nudged me over half a metre to the right which is where my FreeBSD desktop -- sadly neglected these past few months -- sits. Switching from KDE4 to KDE3 is kind of jarring. The KDE3 world really is more boxy and I'm doubly impressed by the visual work done on KDE4 now. So my desire for KDE4 has spurred me to try out the current area51 ports tree. That requires a return to the use of CVS, which is a shock in itself, but the carrot at the end is attractive enough.

As per usual this kicks off a bunch of corner cases. I'm building on FBSD-7 with gcc 4.2.1 on an amd64. The ports setup forces this to ARCH=generic instead of ARCH=x86_64 which in turn gets me the (slow) generic atomic operations. There's also an & too many in those operations, but -- it's almost "as usual" -- I hear that's already been fixed upstream.

Crunching through the ports is time-consuming, and I really appreciate ...read more...

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): C++ techniques: part 1: curiously recurring template pattern

System & Utilities I've been thinking for a while that I should be blogging about some c++ metaprogramming techniques that I learned while coding Eigen:

  • 1. the curiously recurring template pattern

  • 2. "meta" versions of "if", "==", and other things

  • 3. expression templates

  • Of course these techniques have been "known" for a long time, since they were discovered in the 90's. Some of them are already used in KDE; I saw some use of 1. in KHTML/KJS, and 2 is quite commonplace anyway. Perhaps 3 is the least-known one, and the only one in which I'd have anything original to say.

Today let's talk about the curiously recurring template pattern.

Executive summary: this technique allows you, in certain cases, to get rid of "virtual" keywords, thus avoiding the overhead of a vtable and indirect function calls.

Let's look at the classical example below, which shows an abstract base class with a method to returning some data determined by the derived class -- something typically implemented using the ...read more...

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Project Neon - KDE Nightly Builds

    System & Utilities
..it's that time again, when I announce something new, which isn't new at all due to testing ;-)

    Since amarok-nightly is a huge success ....

Project Neon now also includes kde-nightly builds for Kubuntu!

Currently available are kdebase, kdemultimedia, kdegraphics, kdenetwork and kdesdk

Now my dear Kubuntu users, you can: develop, debug, fix, test, promote and break your system :-P
Have fun, and in case something goes wrong: blame KRF in #amarok.neon.

    Misc:
    • Thanks to everyone who helped testing kde-nightly!
    • As seen above, Neon now has a shiny IRC channel - YAY o/
    • amarok-nightly for openSUSE is undergoing testing, if you want to join the fun -> #amarok.neon
    • I am now member in the elite Oxygen Club -> Video
    • Because I got loads of stuff to do this post is quite short ;-)

I decided to spice up my EeePC with a pretty decal:

It was very easy to apply and looks great. My Eee already draws a lot of comments when I take it out and about, I imagine I’ll attract more people interested in this itty bitty computer.

Troy Unrau: Congrats to Wine on 1.0

System & Utilities Well, I'd just like to raise my voice in the chorus of congratulations that are echoing throughout the web (and often hiding in the Firefox 3.0 stuff). Congratulations to the Wine project on Wine 1.0, from your friends at KDE :) I see your roadmap for post-1.1, and your list of supported apps and I wonder, is your 1.0 release the tipping point? Can people use a fully FOSS stack for everything these days?

Cheers, and thanks for your hard work.

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: Mp3tunes GSoC project status

System & Utilities This summer, I am mentoring Google summer of Code student Casey Link ( aka Ramblurr on IRC ). Casey is working on improving the Mp3Tunes service in Amarok 2, updating it to use Mp3Tunes brand new GPL C lib instead of using their REST API directly, allowing up and download of music, and finally complete automatic synchronization of content.

Casey has been blogging a weekly progress report detailing the work he has done. As his blog is ( not yet ) on planetkde, I thought I would post the links to his first 3 reports here:

    GSoC Report - Week 1
GSoC Report Week 2: libmp3tunes goodness
    GSoC Report Week 3: Tanstaafl

Overall I am very pleased with Casey's progress. He has approached his project with great enthusiasm and has already committed a lot of working code. I just hope he does not end up ...read more...

Alexander Neundorf: QA for KDE on exotic platforms - CDash ?

    System & Utilities

As Friedrich already noticed, blogs are where discussions happen nowadays...

Well, also responding to one of Ade's posts, where he states

"I've been starting CMake "experimental" builds on various Solaris machines with SS12 to get numbers on how many warnings and errors we're producing. Since Dirk's dashboard works quite well for the vast majority of our developers -- Linux based -- I think a separate dashboard that counts and reports issues for non-Linux builds would be useful. "

Yes, it would be really nice to have nightly (or daily) builds of KDE (at least kdelibs) on more exotic platforms. Which means for KDE basically everything != Linux, i.e. Solaris, FreeBSD, Windows, OSX, more ?

    Greg Haynes: Introducing libinfinitymm

    System & Utilities

Now that exams are over I have been able to spend the past week getting to really work on my GSOC project. In this time I created a c++ wrapper for libinfnity, which is the library my project will be using. The git repository can be found on Gitorious. Libinfinity has a very flexible object oriented design (the online docs are AWOL, so heres my copy), and should make the rest of my project pretty straightforward. In order to implement the collaborative editing component you need to just supply an object which implements InfTextBuffer (now Infinity::TextBuffer), so making a Kate Document implement this interface should be a breeze compared to the glib/gmmproc funk I’ve been dealing with the past week. For the rest of the week I have a fair amount of testing/code scrubbing to get done, but hopefully not long after i’ll have some results to show off :) Now, back to ...read more...

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): Catch more with Dutchmans than with others

    System & Utilities

[[Usenet is dead, now Email and Mailinglist are dying, in Web 2.0 times Blog is the way to communicate/discuss. I am just curious how Akregator will learn to display these threads, given that there can be multiple ancestors :)]]

There are currently some classes in Okteta used for rendering which are named the same (*ColumnRenderer), one of each pair living in a namespace (KHEUI), the other in the standard one. Product of lazyness and temporary solutions (printing needs a renderer, the one for the screen is not yet usable, so until it is, let’s just copy, paste&adapt it).

    Without any dutchman:
It worked for me, as the code depending on the renderer never sees both of them.

    Here comes dutchman #1:
Unless you compile KDE with enable-final turned on, which puts all source files into a single big one. I never have done, but dutchman #1: So Tom Albers sent in a patch to fix this. E.g. it added the prefixed double-colons to remove ambiguity. With lazyiness turned on, I just had him apply the patch as ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 3

    System & Utilities

these weekly reports are going to be pretty boring if I keep blogging about what I’ve done halfway through the week. :)
I haven’t written any code since then; I spent my time dealing with some Real Life stuff I’d been neglecting, then getting outside and enjoying the sushine. :) I need to remember to spend more time outside the house and not get lost in my computer.

I did do some planning for this upcoming week, though. hopefully getting input working properly won’t be too much of a headache… we’ll see. I don’t think I’ll have time to actually write the code for that for another day or two.

Francis Giannaros: openSUSE 11.0 KDE Sneak Peek

    System & Utilities

Worth a read is the recently published Sneak Peeks at openSUSE 11.0: KDE article, which also features a good interview with openSUSE/KDE developer Stephan Binner. It goes over the media changes, the versions of KDE available, and the work done over the last 9 months in the upcoming openSUSE 11.0 release, coming in just a couple of days now!

I’ve been following the development version (with of course KDE 4.0) for some time now and I’m really pleased about the way it has turned out! Distrowatch and others have been giving some glowing reviews, and the general feel from testers of the release appears to be incredibly positive. The new installer, sexy artwork, super-fast package management, and new official KDE 4 live CD is really making a big change. So congratulations to everyone who made it happen!

    Michael Pyne (mpyne): Improved crossfadiness

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So I’ve made a few more changes to the crossfading code in JuK. This should hopefully fix crossfading issues completely for people. However, life is weird sometimes. phonon-gst went from being completely unusable (it would crash with JuK) to being the best option right now (perfect crossfading, at least here). phonon-xine, due to the way crossfading is now implemented sounds slightly crackly sometimes while playing music back. Even with the new crossfading routine, incoming music starts out at a high volume before fading in, although it does sound smoother.

Basically what used to happen is that JuK would pipe the music directly from the file to the Audio Output object. Phonon allows you to insert effects into that audio path, which is how crossfading works. You simply start playing the next song with a fader effect, set to fade in, and at the same time insert a fader effect into your currently playing stream set to fade out. Unfortunately phonon-gst has issues with removing effects from an audio path ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Catch more with beaches than with fog

System & Utilities Why yes, I have considered hacking in the Canary islands, but it fails some essential tests. You see, the islands are pleasant. There are beaches. There is sun. You can have fun and be productive at the same time.

Everyone knows that this is patently impossible and therefore such a place cannot exist. Since non-existent places have no beer or internet, I will not go somewhere nice to hack. Heck no.

I was just clearing out my wallet, which is a sort of archaeology of places I do go to hack, and beside my lucky Lempira there were pound notes, a London tube ticket and a Berlin S-Bahn ticket. Those kind of locations do not fail on the "too many beaches" test. But first we have Akademy 2008 in Belgium (see what I mean about beaches and beer?), for which the acceptance notes have been sent out by Cornelius, our tireless administrator, bean counter, PC dude and board member. It's looking like a nice ...read more...

    Lorn Potter: hello Nokia!

    System & Utilities

    Well,
I start work for a different company today, namely Nokia. Perhaps you have heard of them? No? Well, they used to make rubber boots but now make phones. Lot’s of them. They have a few employees. Lot’s of them. and now, a few more, thanks to the (more or less) peaceful assimilation of Trolltech.

Am I worried? A bit. The management structure at Nokia is overbearing, not like Trolltech’s lean and mean machine. I doubt I will see the CEO of Nokia getting drunk and wrestling with engineers any time soon. I doubt I will ever be called to a meeting with him to pick my brain about community matters, much less even get an email from him. I liked that about Trolltech. The openness, the friendliness.
Hopefully my boss will stop wearing his shoes so much. He used to go barefoot a lot more than he does now. I liked that about him.

Today, I start work for Nokia, sitting in the same desk (I hope), loging into the same machines (I hope), and continuing my ...read more...

    Lorn Potter: bye bye Trolltech…

    System & Utilities

    Well,
This is my last post as a Trolltech employee. I have worked for Trolltech Pty Ltd, in Australia. since 2003. I can proudly say I helped Qtopia become more open, and fully GPL. It’s been a short 5 or so years, I have seen the Brisbane office grow from around 14 people to around 50, found my wife, had a son and daughter. A lot has happened in the past years. Ran ‘make’ more times that I want to think about. Got Qtopia running on all the devices I could. Yelled and complained and praised till I was blue in the face.

Tomorrow (Tuesday), I will be employed by Nokia, doing the same things I did today (well, maybe the day after next, tomorrow is the obigitory write-off “1st day”, BBQ and beer drinking).

It will be a challenging year ahead, I am sure both Nokia and Trolltech ^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H Qt Software have things to learn from one another. I am personally wishing Trolltech’s seeds of open source will blossom Nokia into a greater thing.

    So tonight, while ...read more...

    • Happy Father’s day to me. It’s my first one. :)
    • Off to the pool in the morning. S. seemed to enjoy the water more this time, most likely cause it was warmer.
    • Lunch, naps for the girls. Dad around in the mid-afternoon with (belated) birthday present. My laptop now has a 250GB drive in it, which is (once again), installing Fedora 9. 3 installs in the last week - that needs to quit, or I’ll never get any work done.
    • Nice to see the Yzis revival. Guess I need to blow away my svn checkout and learn mercurial now. Although it’s not like i’d have a lot of time for that anyways. :)

The past two weeks went by like a rollercoaster ride. Just when I thought I had settled down and figured out my Ultimate Productivity Plan(TM), I got sidetracked by one of my strongest and most dangerous addictions: MMORPG’s. While that in itself deserves a post of its own (and indeed, I’ve been contemplating on writing one), I really like the RPG genre, specially fantasy ones (sword and magic stuff). So if the opportunity comes for a good, open-ended RPG that I can play online with my friends, I grab it. The bad thing about it (aside from being distracted and addicted) is that these Asian MMORPG’s popular in the Philippines (where I am) run only on Windows. Technically they can run in Wine as well if and only if they didn’t use the “anti-hacking” utility called GameGuard, which all of them do. So basically playing them on GNU/Linux is in itself just a fantasy. Sucks, really. I’ve been looking for good (MMO)RPG’s on GNU/Linux. Though I have seen a few recommended ones, they still seem a bit distant from the style ...read more...

    Aaron Seigo (aseigo): father's day

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Today is Father's Day here in Canada (and I presume elsewhere as well). I woke up after my first really, really deep, sound and lengthy sleep this week (I deal with occasional bouts of insomnia) to the living room laid out with several colourful home made cards, a couple of signs and the white board covered in Father's Day art. While he may think I'm a good dad, I know for a fact that it would be difficult if not impossible to find a better son. We went out for brunch at the diner followed by a walk in the sun. It was .. wonderful.

Yesterday I went to a day-long workshop discussion on interacting with and activating community. There was one elected official from the Alberta government, lawyers, doctors, educators and social workers among others. There was age and ethnic diversity as well, so it made for a really interesting day.

I brought up the topic of power creation, rather than redistribution, borrowing ideas from ...read more...

Aurelien Gateau: Plasma idea: Sliding containment

    System & Utilities

I have been playing with Plasma lately, trying to figure out how it could improve my computer experience. I came to the conclusion that I do not like having plasmoids over my wallpaper. It’s not a critic, just my very own taste.

Still I would like to be able to use widgets, some of them are very tempting. I gave activities a try, but I find it cumbersome to have to zoom in and out. So I thought about an alternative solution: a sliding containment.

The idea would be to have a containment which would behave like Yakuake: you press a shortcut key and it slides from the top of the screen. Press the shortcut key again and it slides out. I can easily see myself filling this containment with various plasmoids without the feeling that my desktop is crowded.

If we get a Konsole plasmoid one day, then this solution could even replace Yakuake.

One could even go a step further and add tabs support to this containment so that you could arrange your plasmoids in different ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): A Working Week

System & Utilities If things have been quiet for blog posts and KDE4-Solaris commits, then there's a good reason: work-work. The stuff you do that pays the bills, as opposed to regular work on and for KDE (board stuff and porting and bugfixing and evangelizing) which again is opposed to hobby (the vegetable garden).

Work-work is SQO-OSS, which is working to create an extensible automatic objective platform for quality evaluation of Open Source projects. We call it Alitheia, for neat and businesslike truth. For developers, this will eventually be like the EBN on steroids. For now, it's more of a platform and less of a complete product to help developers find defects in their code. For managers and consultants there may be a more high-level view of projects as a whole based on the SQO-OSS Quality Model (which itself is based off the ISO umpty-tumpty-foo standard); that kind of comparitive numbers makes me uncomfortable, but it's part of our mandate.

    Ariya Hidayat: JavaScript speed race

    System & Utilities

Just for fun, I tested JavaScript performance of several web browsers, using the well-known SunSpider benchmark tool. The test machine is a fairly old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo notebook with AMD Turion64 1.8 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM, running Microsoft Windows XP SP2.

    SunSpider benchmark results

The result is not surprising. Internet Explorer is notoriously slow but there is hope with IE8. Mozilla developers have done a great job optimizing Firefox. WebKit with SquirrelFish (and surely the upcoming Safari 4) really shines in speed.

KDE 4 Progress: New plasmoids, Akonadi, KRunner and more

    System & Utilities

PolishLinux.org looks at a KDE 4.1 snapshot. " In spite of fragmentary information about changes, that I've published since my last insight , I've decided after all to gather them all in one place.
