Yocto: mature or not?

System & Utilities

This is a bit of fun spoiling post, but sometimes we need to become constructively critical in order to improve the situation. As you may already know, Yocto has been advertised as the relatively new technology for creating custom distributions for you. Although, people commonly use Poky, Arago, and so forth ready-made distributions on top of Open Embedded.

Yocto Project

Cross-compilation

So, here is the critical issue for embedded developers using the cross-toolchain provided by Code Sourcer why I personally think that Yocto might not be usable for the moment for commercial projects where reliability is a main concern.

In short: it does not work if you would like to build the distribution (for instance stock Poky) for your embedded board, like ARM with the sourcery toolchain.

What makes me worry a bit more, this cross-toolchain environment was working in the first ...read more...

What a life…

System & Utilities

I don’t even know how to start this one but wow, when I think my life can’t get worst it surprises me again.

So last month I started a campaign in Indeigogo  about Litteras a new email client with EWS (Exchange) support. It was great, in like 2 days I had 5% of the goal, but then it stuck completely, that was probably because I failed to blog more about it and it’s progress, but it also showed how I was wrong on thinking people dislike Akonadi, I got lots of feedback of users that like it, I gave it a second try and it was more or less what I had experienced in the past. It worked with my Gmail account but still I don’t like it much, I was able to make kmail unusable by killing the mysql process, I should fill a bug but lots of things happened after this.

One of the greatest things of the campaign was that I was informed about KDSoap which is not on “Qt Soap”google search, right now ...read more...

Akademy 2013: Report with blackjack

System & Utilities

Heya

Previous week I have attended Akademy 2031 conference. This year they joined forces with Qt Contributors’ Summit 2013, that’s why I am so lucky to attend even two global events the same time. In this report I would like to say about how it was. Seems like these keywords will fit theme of the whole report: kde, community, I, love, you.

Let’s start then. Day 1. It was kinda greeting party with some free wine and awesome music, which attendee and organisators were playing themselves. Greet music and paid Coke for me were great! :D I also got my badge (mum got her one next day).

day 1

I also had a conversation mostly with Kevin Krammer (thanks, Kevin!)

Day 2. Sessions started. It was great, a lot of new knowledge, etc. I listened everything and got a lot of important experience. Sessions are great, only one remark is I would like to have a bit more technical talks.

After that we had a party at the night, that was unfortuntely, great ...read more...

Integrating the Query Builder into Dolphin

System & Utilities

Something that works is good, but something that works great is better. These past days, I fixed many bugs and imperfections of the new Nepomuk Query Parser and the Query Builder widget. I will summarize theses fixes shortly, then will come the screenshots.

Syntax-highlighting, one more time

Before my holidays, I implemented the Query Builder widget as a syntax-highlighted QPlainTextEdit. This was easy and fun, and the result looked quite nice. You can find the whole story here.

syntax-highlighted QPlainTextEdit

After that, I decided to rewrite the implementation from scratch to give it a different look. I wanted to have boxes around parsed terms, with a small cross to remove them. After some days, the widget looked like that:

boxes in a QWidget

This widget was really nice, but its implementation did not seem very clean. Furthermore, the widget was made of a complex tree of line edits, buttons and widgets responsible for drawing the boxes. Handling the cursor position (and the text itself) was a bit hackish, and some things did not ...read more...

Memory usage improvements for 4.11

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

The other day I went to buy a DDR stick but the shop was closed so the only solution was to sit down and fix some memory hungry applications.

These will be in 4.11:

* Fixed a bug where maildir resource would use 1 or 2GB when importing large folders.

* Fixed a bug where mixedmaildir resource would also use 1 or 2GB.
(Thanks to Martin Steigerwald for providing a a 77k e-mail folder).

* akonadiserver wasn't clearing uneeded query caches. Saved 65MB here.

* Kontact had 5 copies of all calendaring data in memory if you used summary view which
accounted for 200MB with my big test .ical file.

* KOrganizer grew infinitely over night under some circumstances.

* KAlarm wasn't freeing editor dialogs, resulting in infinite memory usage over time.

* Mysql got up to 25 MB of savings (4.12)

Also, Dan Vratil and Vishesh Handa have been working hard on performance/memory of nepomuk and ...read more...

KDE e.V. General Assembly 2013

System & Utilities

tl;dr: If you are a committed KDE contributor and not a KDE e.V. member, you are doing it wrong. If you are a KDE user, consider helping the KDE User Working Group. Read KDE e.V.’s quarterly reports.

Voting at the KDE e.V. general assemblyAkademy 2013 is still on it’s way, and as usual the KDE e.V. General Assembly was held as a part of it. KDE e.V. is the representation and governance body of the KDE community. Membership in this not-for-profit association registered in Berlin, Germany is open to all KDE contributors . Members usually assemble once a year to coordinate, to vote on issues important to the community and to elect representatives and board members as needed. The highlights this year where the discussion of the role of the Community Working Group, the report on the first activities of the newly established Financial Working Group, and the election of one new board member. I was the chairperson of the assembly, and this is my inofficial report.

Internationailzation (aka i18n) in the new Plasma NM applet

System & Utilities

Akademy 2013 is in its final days. Yesterday we had our day trip (or survival training day hehe, look at my Akademy 2013 photos from yesterday to see what I mean). I really liked the day trip, I like doing long walks.

At the end of the day trip we went to a restaurant to have dinner. I end up in the same table with the Italian guys. During our chat Luigi Toscano, from the KDE translation team, told me about what he did to translate the new Plasma NM applet faster. Since the new applet shares most of the strings with the current Plasma NM applet (in networkmanagement repository) he copied the .po files for Italian language from networkmanagement (current applet) to plasma-nm (new applet) and configured Lokalize to merge the strings. Sorry, I do not know the exact steps to do that in Lokalize.

Other translation teams can do the same to speed up translating Plasma NM to their languages. The same can be done when we create a new ...read more...

Plasma Active: Current Devel Snapshots for ArchosG9 and Nexus7

System & Utilities

This is just a very quick announcement that new rootfs tarballs of the current development branch of Plasma Active are available for ArchosG9 and Nexus7. These snapshots are not made based on Mer latest but on an older version. Additionally, to the stock Plasma Active installation these tarballs contain my nemo-compatibility package as well as some Nemomobile apps to show the general practicability of running Nemomobile apps on Plasma Active. The rootfs tarballs are available here:

http://files.kde.org/plasma/active/3.0/images/archos-g9/armv7hl/plasma-active-armv7hl-archos-gen9-pvr-devel-2013-07-17.tar.gz

http://files.kde.org/plasma/active/3.0/images/nexus7/plasma-active-armv7hl-nexus7-devel-2013-07-17.tar.gz

The .ks files from which these tarballs had been generated are available here:

http://files.kde.org/plasma/active/3.0/images/archos-g9/armv7hl/plasma-active-armv7hl-archos-gen9-pvr-devel-2013-07-17.ks

http://files.kde.org/plasma/active/3.0/images/nexus7/plasma-active-armv7hl-nexus7-devel-2013-07-17.ks

Please note that the Nexus7 version needs a manual change that is currently not included in the .ks file: The setting for QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM in /etc/sysconfig/nemo-mobile-ui needs to be changed from “opengl” to “raster”.

Please also note that there is still a nasty bug that causes the Network Manager applet to be unusable. A workaround for connecting to a secured WLAN is, e.g., to use nmcli instead: nmcli d wifi connect “SSID” ...read more...

QtWebKit 2.3.2 and QtWebKit for Qt 5.1

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

Thursday I tagged QtWebKit 2.3.2. To avoid confusion I will present both QtWebKit for Qt 5.1 and QtWebKit 2.3.2.

The new features in QtWebKit for Qt 5.1 can be seen on http://qt-project.org/wiki/New-Features-in-Qt-5.1 . Let me expand a few interesting ones below:

Windows 64bit JIT: In QtWebKit 5.0 and QtWebKit 2.3.1 we only supported interpreted JavaScriptCore on 64bit Windows. The issue is that unlike 32bit x86, x64 has different calling conversions on Windows and Linux, so the it requires different JIT implementations to work on Win64, and on top of that. Note that x64 is still not as fast as x86 on windows or x64 on linux. Only first generation JIT has been implemented, the second generation DFG JIT is not available. This work was also cherry-picked forQtWebKit 2.3.2

MIPS JavaScriptCore: MIPS have had second level DFG JIT implemented. This work was also cherry-picked for QtWebKit 2.3.2. Note the at WebKit MIPS implementation is limited to the O32 binary format and ...read more...

Clang's AST dump AKA 'WTH is the compiler doing???'

System & Utilities

It's no secret that I use the Clang compiler for development. Although GCC is still somewhat better when things like the performance of the resulting code matter, there are other features that matter more during development. And although again competition helps (it's not difficult to guess where the inspiration for the new error reporting in 4.8 comes from), there are features where I expect it'd be hard for GCC to match Clang. The capabilities and ease of writing Clang plugins is one thing, but there are more hidden secrets, like the AST dump.

If Clang is invoked also with -Xclang -ast-dump options, it'll dump its internal representation of the compiled source. Which can be pretty useful when the source code doesn't actually mean what one expects, or if there's something unexpected from elsewhere interfering. Consider the following (simple, for clarity) example:

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;

class A
    {
    };

class B
    {
    public:
        operator A() const { return A(); }
    };

Akademy again

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

Last year I skipped Akademy and felt sorry about that. So this year I simply have to go. It will be great to immerse in the talks about and related to KDE. My interest is currently on getting things done, semantic technologies and file formats. It's holiday, so a bit less JavaScript for a week and a bit more of everything else.

We just put a browser based WebODF editor demo live, so I can enjoy Akademy and let my mind linger on different topics for a week.

New comics project

comics preview

Finally, after quite a long time, here are the first pages of my new comics project, using Krita development version from scratch (well, almost only as you’ll see further). So enjoy, it’s only a few pages for now but hopefuly the next parts will come faster. I made only French version for now, I’ll publish english version soon. Original files are A4 600dpi, but the images inside the PDF are resized to 300dpi to make it lighter to download.

Freestyle Fiction – Episode 01 – part A
File size: 3,6Mio

I’ve choosed to release it on a Creative-Commons BY-SA license. So we can really call it a free and open comics, as it will easily allow daptations and spin-offs of all kinds from anyone (after a few more pages published, of course for now not enough of the story is told to make some big related project..).

Also at the same time I’m happy to tell I’ve decided to re-license all of my available work that ...read more...

Open Source Dictation: Demo Time

System & Utilities

Over the last couple of weeks, I've been working towards a demo of open source speech recognition. I did a review of existing resources, and managed to improve both acoustic- and language model. That left turning Simon into a real dictation system.

Making Simon work with large-vocabulary models

First of all, I needed to hack Simond a bit to accept and use an n-gram based language model instead of the scenarios grammar when the first was available. With this little bit of trickery, Simon was already able to use the models I built in the last weeks.

Sadly, I immediately noticed a big performance issue: Up until now, Simon basically recorded one sample until the user stopped speaking and then started recognizing. While not a problem when the "sentences" are constrained to simple, short commands, this would cause significant lag as the length of the sentences, and therefore the time required for recognition, increased. Even when recognizing faster than real time, this essentially meant ...read more...

AudioCD. Bug hunting: new details.

System & Utilities
Do you remember second week report, where I've described my problem with CD ejection, Solid and Amarok? Recently I've received comment with very clever idea. Here it is. Amarok is not the only KDE application which uses Solid, Dolphin is another example. So we can examine behaviour of solid-tester, Amarok and Dolphin in different combinations. Another observation from me was that Dolphin and Amarok both are relatively complex software, so I decided to include KsCd to testing list, because it also uses Solid and it is much simpler.

Then I started testing and found a very interesting behaviour:

solid-tester + KsCd
Everything is going like clockwork: solid-tester receives all signals in time, kscd also perfectly reacts on CD insertion and ejection. Mindful reader may already have idea about where problem lies, but if you don't then just answer a question: what is main difference between KsCd and Amarok/Dolphin? Spoiler:  KsCd doesn't use kio audiocd, but Amarok/Dolphin does.

AudioCD. Week 2.

System & Utilities
Plan for second week was: "New implementation of AudioCdCollection. After this step is completed, Amarok should support AudioCd in a same way as before." New implementation of  AudioCdCollection was done during first week, so second week began with a testing of new AudioCD collection implementation. At the beginning of a week I did not found any problem and decided to continue my work with what was planned on a third week: "Decision about track enumeration routine should be done."

I've created preliminary list of software which operates with CD and should be checked: k3b, kscd, vlc. I've started ny work with investigation how k3b enumerates tracks. K3b uses libmusicbrainz3. So I've tested enumeration of CD with libmusicbrainz3 in Amarok. There is new branch in my personal clone called musicbrainz, where you can find this code. If you don't need information about AudioCD from musicbrainz then libdicsid can be used for enumeration. For now ...read more...

News in kdepim 4.11: Archive Mail Agent

System & Utilities

I created this agent for kdepim 4.9 (if I remember).
My idea was to allow archiving automatically folders (and sub-folders).

This agent allow to define when we want to archive it (specific date), with recurrence or not  (each x days, each x months etc.), and we can define maximum number of archive (We don’t want to full hard disk).

Until 2 months ago I never had bug report about it, so for me it was bugs free (as usual in kdepim :) ).

But Kevin Ottens started to use it and it was the drama :) : Ok it was not bugs free :)
So I fixed a lot of bugs reported by him (thanks a lot for my uniq user :) )

He gave me some ideas, for example add a function to force archiving, or for disabling specific archive etc.

Now I can hope that this agent is bugs free :)
So please try and ...read more...

Moving Kdenlive's forum

System & Utilities

The Kdenlive forums, that were usually hosted on kdenlive.org have moved!
Our forums are now hosted on KDE's forum website.

We are currently looking at a way to migrate the existing posts to the new forum, but in the meantime the old kdenlive.org forum is available as read only here:
http://kdenlive.org/forum

This move was decided because our kdenlive.org server could not handle the load anymore, and also because for a long time we wanted to tighten our links with the KDE community.

This will also help our developers to concentrate on Kdenlive's code, not on website maintenance.
So for now you can find the following Kdenlive resources on KDE's infrastructure:

We hope this will bring all users a better experience.

FISL

System & Utilities

I just arrived at Porto Alegre for FISL. The atmosphere here is great, I just realized how much I missed this feeling. In a couple of hours I will give a talk about social games and the FLOSS-based infrastructure that is used to develop and deploy them. So it is not a KDE talk: I am going to cover mostly html5 and web technologies, ranging from REST API design to specific deployment scenarios using MongoDB, Memcache, Nginx…
There will be a couple of talks given by KDE people here at the event, and tomorrow (12:00) is the KDE-BR community event/meeting.
As a resolution for the next 12 months, I plan to slowly resume my history of contribution to FLOSS projects and maybe even KDE. This can be difficult, as I am mostly interested now in html5, js and collaborative platforms (games and education) that are browser-based. But let us see how it goes. One step at a time. KDE and Slackware however remain my DE/Distro of choice, of course :)
Finally, good luck ...read more...

I hate symbols -> I love symbols

System & Utilities

No, no, no, I don’t mean the ancient Greek or Latin symbols, I mean symbols for KDE packages.

As you guys know, I’m a packager at Kubuntu. I seemed to join in back from my examination (status report for my examination, in case if you are worrying for me: fine) at exactly the right moment, when packagers are needed to fix those build failures and red lights at our status page (i.e. wrong symbols or files not included in .install files) for our KDE SC 4.10.80  (a.k.a. KDE SC 4.11 Beta 1) packages.

So, I started working on fixing these packages, from Monday to Thursday, full-time (between getting access to my computer and going to sleep). It was a tiring process, and I feel exhausted already on Thursday.

One of my reasons I’m exhausted is with symbols, or even worse still, new library versions. Some KDE SC 4.10.80 had new library versions. For example, okular had some new library symbols. And analitza has a completely new library version (it took me a long time to get the correct patch from ...read more...

Kubuntu Won't be Switching to Mir or XMir

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

A few months ago Canonical announced their new graphics system for Ubuntu, Mir. It's a shame the Linux desktop market hasn't taken off as we all hoped at the turn of the millennium and they feel the need to follow a more Apple or Android style of approach making an OS which works in isolation rather than as part of a community development method.

Here at Kubuntu we still want to work as part of the community development, taking the fine software from KDE and other upstreams and putting it on computers worldwide. So when Ubuntu Desktop gets switched to Mir we won't be following. We'll be staying with X on the images for our 13.10 release now in development and the 14.04LTS release next year. After that we hope to switch to Wayland which is what KDE and every other Linux distro hopes to do.

There's been a few posts of Kubuntu on XMir and other ...read more...

Singletons, shared instances, the modern way

System & Utilities

The last post showed how to create a modern and safe d-ptr (pimpl) idiom. There were a few questions regarding the purpose of such a thing, when you can directly use std::unique_ptr or QScopedPointer. The main reason is that it provides additional safeguards from abuse by making the interface minimal. Most importantly, it does not provide an interface to get the raw pointer. (note: it does, but if you are able and want to write something like delete d.operator->() who am I to stop you)

Today, we’ll talk about something evil – singletons. Or, more precisely, the lesser evil brother of a singleton that lasts only while someone holds a pointer to it. Again, it is not something that is difficult to implement, even in old C++, but thanks to the new smart pointers of C++11 it starts to be more elegant.

template
class shared_singleton {
public:
static std::shared_ptr instance()
{
auto ptr = s_instance.lock();

if (!ptr) {
ptr = std::make_shared();
s_instance = ptr;
}

return ...read more...

KDE, the present and present+1

System & Utilities

Usually I don’t blog because there’s not much going on. Lately it’s been because there’s been too much things going on.

As always in communities, it’s not something somebody is doing in his corner, but some synergy coming together in a beautiful and convoluted way. Let me try to sort what I’m talking about.

  • The Akademy 2013 is happening soon. It’s going to be a very interesting event, KDE is evolving in a fast pace, more than most of us realize. This year’s Akademy will be crucial to the future of the project, I wouldn’t miss it.

    I'm going to the Akademy 2013

  • This year, Akademy comes with a small present in it. The Akademy-es 2013 will happen in Bilbao as well, the two days before the Akademy. It’s our biggest opportunity to help people from Spain join the KDE awesomeness. If you are around and understand Spanish, don’t hesitate to join!
    We’ll have talks, we’ll have discussions and we’ll tell you ...read more...
