Jason Kasper (vanRijn): iPhone; KPilot Summer of Code; Five Fingers

System & Utilities

Warning. Random brain dump coming…

Food for thought that I spotted on my lifehacker feed today… Why You’re Better Off Avoiding the iPhone

… this is a hypocrite’s confession. I purchased and use an iPhone, but I hate being locked into Apple’s proprietary system.

Original impetus was 5 reasons to avoid iPhone 3G [Free Software Foundation]. Hm. I’m still locked into my Sprint account until October, so I’m on a forced wait regardless of whether I wanted to run out and buy one right now anyway.

In other news, my awesome Summer of Code student, Bertjan, is making great strides in our unstable version of KPilot (trunk, which will be in KDE 4.2). He’s well into the middle of writing a new contacts conduit for KPilot, which will utilize the new Akonadi goodness that will serve as the core of KDE PIM in KDE 4.2 and beyond. Woot! Awesome work Bertjan! We only have 4 weeks left!!! =:D He’s also had to do a bit more cleanup before he could ...read more...

Cyrille Berger: Howto: fun blog entry while stabilizing software

System & Utilities Boudewijn just mentioned that KOffice was entering soft-freeze and that it would mean more boring blog entries while we work on stabilizing KOffice. Well I must disagree with that, I usually find the most annoying bugs while preparing blog entry, and when working on stabilizing Krita, it usually wake up my creativity part (mostly because it's not sucked by my coder side while designing new features), which can be turn in fun entries.

I just bought the new Super Smash Brawl for WII (yeah not the best way to concentrate yourself on bug fixing, but very good to clear your mind), which includes the infamous Mr Game & Watch character (probably for nostalgic reason, my favorite). So this has inspired me: it should be easy to reproduce it using Karbon:

And I must say, the work that was done on Karbon14 by Jan Hambrecht for 2.0 is really impressive, the curve editing is really good now (compared ...read more...

Mark Kretschmann (markey): Amarok 2 on Windows - Reloaded

System & Utilities My last blog about Amarok 2 on Windows had been a long while ago, but I'm happy to report that we have some news. Pau Garcia i Quiles committed a number of compile fixes, and it's now possible to build Amarok 2 with MSVC, and to actually run it!

Check this out (click to see full size):

Pau writes:

Yesterday I stayed up until 4:30 AM while trying to fix Amarok to work on Windows, and when I got it to build it was so late I was too tired to test it. So I fired it up this morning and this is the result. I have tested and it plays MP3, WMA, APE and whatever Magnatune streams on. Built with Visual C++ 2008.

I would like to emphasize that this is an ALPHA version. We know it still looks a bit ugly, but this will improve soon.

Harri Porten: Musing on a Summer Afternoon

System & Utilities

The end of the day at the office is nearing. Sitting at my desk, going through the list of people who have requested a trial version of Squish today. Of course several from the usual suspects, i.e. large
international cooperations. But what never ceases to amaze me is the sheer endless number of yet unknown shops of all sizes and domains that exist around the world.

I notice a high-pitched whistle filling my ears but can’t make out the origin. The harddisk of my machine started to sing its final song? A technician from the lab below passionately grinding a dental prosthesis into shape?

With our crew decimated due to vacation time it’s a bit more quiet than usual. Clearly audible are Rainer and Roberto fighting their last table soccer match of the day. Rob is busy with a new internal test library. Andreas and Frerich are discussing their major rewrite of our test development GUI. Just checked: no modal dialog blocking the user’s flow, yet. Aaron would be proud of them.

Looking at how much code I wrote ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Go me

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So I just returned from a trip to Washington, D.C.

The trip was the culmination of about 8 weeks of study for the series of exam and interviews required to graduate the Navy Prospective Nuclear Engineer Officer (PNEO) curriculum. You basically take all the stuff that you already know about the plant from having operated on it, and then go and really dig into how everything really works. It’s not good enough to know that a procedure tells you to do something in the event of a casualty. You have to know why the procedure is written that way (i.e. what do these steps prevent, what could go wrong if you don’t do the procedure right?). It’s not always about operations either, almost more important is learning about the various maintenance responsibilities that way when you’re the guy actually responsible for supervising the entire department’s maintenance schedule you’ll understand what’s coming across your desk.

After passing a comprehensive written exam a student is sent to Washington D.C. to interview ...read more...

Casey Link (ramblurr): Another GSoC Mini Report

System & Utilities

I’ve been slacking on the update reports over the past two weeks, because I’m holding out for the exciting post where I say “MP3tunes AutoSync is working! Huzzah!” Sadly, this report isn’t that one.

For the past week I’ve been banging my head against the wall of glib, QtEventLoop, and QThreads. I have quite a headache to say the least, but yesterday thanks to my mentor and Ian, both Amarok developers, my head actually broke through that wall. Literally. GLIB, and Qt are kowtowing at my feet swearing oaths of fealty. They have promised to work together and let me get back to doing fun things, like code new features.

Ivan Cukic: Plasma Embedded

System & Utilities

Due to some fortunate events, I got my hands on a small (miniITX) all-in-one board based on AMD Geode, which you can see in the picture. It is a low-power thing without any coolers (not even passive ones).

AMD Geode MB

My job was to install Linux on it. And I did just that - Debian GNU/Linux with KDE 4.1 beta which is in Debian’s experimental repositories. I hooked the system to my screen so that you can see what it looks like (although it was a bit odd to hook something like this to a 19″ screen). It behaves surprisingly well - the system is responsive and works very well (with all fancy Plasma animations)

Agustin Benito Bethencourt: GUADEC + Akademy in Gran Canaria...thanks

System & Utilities Thanks for choosing Gran Canaria to host GUADEC + Akademy 2009. You have made us really happy.

We have a lot of work to do now. Since it is the first time both events takes place at the same time and place, we will face many issues for the very first time. It is going to be tough sometimes but we have the determination for solving them with the help from both, GNOME and KDE, staffs. All I can say is that we will try to integrate efforts and people following the spirit that have made possible this adventure (GUADEC+KDE). It is an example that should guide us during the following year.

I want to make a call to every KDE and GNOME community member for thinking about how can we use this conference to spread free software in Africa and to support african developers. Maybe it is not a major goal for most of us, but a little effort can have a huge impact in the area close to the Canary Islands, and even in other African ...read more...

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Long-lasting drag/drops in ark, and xdnd timeouts

System & Utilities

I’ve been working on trying to get Ark’s drag and drop to work again, and one of the goals I set is to get it more stable than before. One of the most important things to me then was to trash the old method, which was to first extract the file when the drag was started, and then let the user place it. This failed bad whenever you would try to drag a large file from ark and annoyed many a user.

So I thought, this time I’ll find a way to extract the info only when the drag is actually successfully completed. So following a tip from David Faure on irc, I happily started implementing QMimeData and making my own extract-files custom mimedata class. It would work by extracting the file when retrieveData is called, while at the same time showing a progress dialog. Now, laying some weird interactions with dolphin aside, what surprised me was the buggy behavior I saw once the extractions actually took more than 5 seconds. I eventually found this limit to be ...read more...

Daniel Jones: Roll Video

System & Utilities

I always loved in grade school when the teacher was too depressed or hung-over to teach the class and just put on a VHS of Raiders of the Lost Ark, or something.

As promised, I made a little demonstration for those not daring enough for the svn or nightly (you can admit it, we won't think less of you).

(thats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFg0313x-iU, for the embeded video challenged.)

Sorry about the pixelation, it's hard to make out how ridiculously hip my music collection is.

It's still a little slow for a lot a biases. Expecially on my aging thinkpad, while trying to record video. That's something I will be working on. The algorithm is gradually growing faster and more complicated. I suppose that's how that works sometimes.

For next week, I hope to get saving and loading ironed out, as well as putting more work into the solver. After that I have the much more interesting task of writing news types of biases and making sure they don't take forever to solve. I've already got a lot of interesting suggestions which ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Book: Universal Principles of Design (Lidwell, Holden, Butler)

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)

If you are interested in learning design theory, I recommend Universal Principles of Design by William Lidwell, Kritina Holden, and Jill Butler (2003, Rockport). This book includes 101 design topics in perception, learning, usability, appeal, and application. Topic discussions include theory from psychology, marketing, computer science, and graphic design.

Not all examples are computer systems; but the theory is explained well which makes it easy to reapply what you learn when designing a user interface design. The book format makes it both easy and interesting to read (one topic per page), is great as a reference guide, and has lots of pretty pictures.

Another recommendation I’ve made is for Designing Interfaces by Jenifer Tidwell (2005, OReilly). Designing Interfaces is focused on detailed examples and specific problems in computer software. Universal Principles of Design covers much more design theory but with examples across domains and media. Both are excellent books for those interested in user interface design and usability.

George Wright (George): ThinkPad X40 SSD conversion and battery woes

System & Utilities

My CF card and CF-IDE converter board arrived in the post and so today I started trying to get Linux installed on it.

At first I thought I’d try installing from a USB CD drive, but this was a horrendous mess and ended up wasting a good 8 hours of my life. In the end, I dumped the CF in a USB reader and debootstrapped hardy on, then booted it and installed kubuntu-desktop.

The installation is still going, but I did have a chance to run a quick hdparm -Tt on the disk; seems it’s doing a fairly consistent 25MB/s which is excellent given the old disk only did 18MB/s or so. hdparm also tells me that the disk is in UDMA-2 mode which is not too shoddy.

In other news, I’ve noticed that the batteries on my X40 are clapped out after nearly 3 years of abuse. The main 8-cell I have is down from 61Wh to 35Wh, and my extended battery which clips on the bottom is down from 27Wh to 12Wh. I can handle paying

Ariya Hidayat: vim: lightning fast navigation in a large software project

System & Utilities

Love vim but need to work with a large software project that spans a dozen subdirectories and a bazillion source files? There are plenty of solutions, vim scripts or external tools, for this particular problem. Here is one that I've used for years: using the marvelous project script.

It comprises one .vim file (the script) and .txt file (the documentation), thus dead easy to install. After that, just launch vim using: vim +Project (replace vim with gvim if you favor the GUI version), the side pane will be visible. There is where the project tree will be displayed.

For a quick start, type C and you will be prompted to answer 4 questions, as the example below (my answers are in bold)

Enter the Name of the Entry: KOffice
Enter the Absolute Directory to Load:/home/ariya/koffice/source
Enter the CD parameter:
Enter the File Filter: *.cpp *.h *.c

which, as you might guess, create an ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): KDE Updates (… more like a TODO list)

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)
  • First off, I need to catch up on my day job work so I can get back to KDE. I don’t know what I was thinking taking 4 weeks vacation this summer. I feel like as soon as I catch up, I’m gone again, only to come back and play catchup again.
  • One of my goals for the next week (probably this weekend with the way things are going) is to review all of the KDE User Research Profiles and provide feedback to the projects. Afterwards, it will be back to recruiting!
  • I need to begin moving some of the KDE4 HIG content the SoU interns have been writing to techbase. Most of their work has been documenting patterns for common UI elements such as list edits and rich information lists. Additionally, they’ve also been filling in guidelines for lower-level widgets such as radio buttons, or capitalization rules.
  • More system setting modules need reviewed for guideline compliance and good UI practices. Most modules ...read more...

Paul Adams: What is quality?

System & Utilities

Hopefully by now many of you will have seen that the SQO-OSS project has managed to get an early release out of the door. The SQO-OSS project software, Alitheia Core, measures quality. For some definition of quality.

So, what is quality with regards to software? What makes some things good and others suck?

In SQO-OSS we are looking at the following data sources:

  • SVN
  • Mailing list archives
  • BTS database

Most of the common quality metrics are code-related. So SVN covers those. SVN logs are also good for covering other process-related metrics. Mailing lists? BTS?

So here is a genuine question: What do KDE contributors think are good metrics for measuring quality?

I want to build up a quality model for KDE and ensure that as it evolves over time that we are actually measuring and monitoring quality. The EBN already does a good job of this, but only measures what is wrong (e.g. bad spelling in comments). At first I will do what I can to create some basic scripts to gather, process ...read more...

Christian Wellbach: Dragon Player and DVD images

System & Utilities

I just like you to know, all of you who have a some dvd iso lying around, that you can open them in dragon player with either: "dragon dvd:/path/to/dvd.iso" on the command line or by opening the file dvd:/path/to/dvd.iso in the file dialog.
I would add some mimetype-filter or even better something like the solid OpticalDisk checks to "VideoWindow::load(const KUrl &)" if that is a) o.k. with dragon as being a simple movie player and b) does not break sane phonon usage by using some xine feature which might not work elsewhere (NOTE: this should not break something, the file will simply not be loaded on Quicktime,DX,GST imho).
If it does not make sense, I can live with opening it from the command line.

Cheers,
duns_s

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Problems with encrypted networks in Fedora

System & Utilities

fedora-logo-bubble
A recently shipped kernel update for Fedora 8 and Fedora 9 broke the wireless support for many users. While an update is already on the way, this shows how difficult it is to provide bleeding edge packages.

One of the greatest features of Fedora is that almost all packages are bleeding edge. And one of the worst bugs in Fedora is that almost all packages are bleeding edge.

This was proven again some days ago, when a kernel update was shipped for security reasons: besides the security patch there were a set of not tested patches included in the new version as well in the new kernel. And that broke encrypted wireless for quite some people.
As described in bug 453390 the bug is well known and updates are already available. But many people might not find that bug report in Bugzilla and will only wonder what happened. In case of myself the wireless network sometimes ...read more...
