Stephan Binner (Beineri): KDE 4.1 openSUSE Packages and Live CD

System & Utilities Face of Stephan Binner (Beineri)

Warning: Lazy copycat from openSUSE News ahead! Smiling

The KDE team today released KDE 4.1. The KDE developers, including the openSUSE KDE Team, have been working on it for the last six months. Lots of feedback from people trying out KDE 4.0 has gone into KDE 4.1, filling most of the gaps people experienced with the 4.0 releases. See the release announcement for more information and screenshots.

KDE Four Live 1.1

Regular KDE 4 Packages and an openSUSE-based KDE Four Live CD have been available throughout the whole cycle, and final versions of them are also available now. On openSUSE 11.0 you can use 1-click-install to get the KDE 4.1 desktop environment (for openSUSE 10.3 follow above link):

System & Utilities The PhD saga is officially over today! In April I've got my Candidate of Sciences diploma and today I've received my PhD diploma. Yeah, one of the pros of defending your dissertation in Ukraine is that you get two diplomas for one dissertation ;) And of course the cons side is that you have to wait for governmental approval. The wait time for me was more than 7 months. Anyway, it's finally over now :)

Brad Hards (bradh): Openchange resource - SoC update

System & Utilities

Its been a long time (again) between blog entries. The good news is that this time I have something interesting to show: Mailody using Akonadi and OpenChange to get mail from a Microsoft Exchange server, using native protocols.

Of course, I didn't actually do this myself - all the hard work was done by Alan Alvarez (SoC student for the OpenChange project). I'm just basking in the reflected glory.

Enough of the talk - bring on the screenies!

First, plain text (click for bigger):
Mailody / OpenChange - Plain Text

and for those who would prefer HTML (click for bigger):
Mailody / OpenChange - HTML
(I'm not sure why the images aren't showing - I think my Qt is built with GIF support - perhaps might be something that Mailody doesn't handle?).

The way this works is that Mailody talks the akonadiserver, ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Implicit Save

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)

One of the interesting things I learned at the last Ubuntu Developer Summit was the widespread use of implicit save in the GNOME environment.

Implicit Save (or can also be called instant apply or instant editing) is when changes made by the user are automatically saved by the system without the need of the user confirming the changes by performing a Save or Apply action (implied to be so by the action of the user making the change). Explicit Save is when the user explicitly confirms the change by performing a Save or Apply action.

In many cases, implicit save makes a lot of sense and makes the configuration and interaction with options much more natural. For example, consider (Ubuntu) GNOME’s Appearance Preferences dialogs. The widget theme selected is the current theme. Select a different theme and it is changed immediately and automatically:

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 9

System & Utilities

whew! what a busy week. I feel like I got a lot done.

I fixed a bunch of little bugs - appletbrowser goes away when plasma is locked, plasma always starts locked, and plasma always gets activated properly when it starts up.

I made stuff behave more sensibly - the toolbox only opens when it can actually be used, and the timeout for making plasma go idle isn’t hardcoded o 20s any more.

I added some features, too - there’s an action in the toolbox to quit the screensaver (asking for a password if you haven’t recently entered it), trying to click plasma stuff when the unlock dialog is up will dismiss the dialog and let you start interacting with plasma, and there’s a ‘Setup…’ button in the screensaver kcm that runs lockprocess in a convenient setup-mode with plasma immediately unlocked and ready for configuring.

oh, and I took some time to go work on libplasma instead of my soc project: I fixed that bug with adding activities - but then discovered 4.1 is about to be *released* ...read more...

Paul Adams: Look Through Any Window, What Do You See?

System & Utilities

So I've been hugely busy and neglected a whole heap of my responsibilities recently.... And now I'm on holiday. Ish.

Like the other cool kids of KDE, I'm in Berlin. Like danimo, I also had some tour guides yesterday (Cheers Mirko, cheers Till). Having been here a few times before it wasn't exactly a "standard" tour...

"Alexanderplatz is back that way. The hookers can be found down there. But we're heading up this way where you can get lots of decent beer."

I'm normally pretty bad at taking pictures when I travel. I hardly take any pictures in general. Today, however, I had to get a picture of the Berliner Fernsehturm. The view from my hotel room provides a great opportunity for this.

So, over the next few weeks I'm going to be stirring up some more banter about software quality issues. I'm hoping to run a workshop/BoF type thingy at Akademy where I can pick up on my thoughts ...read more...

Daniel Molkentin (danimo): Exploring Berlin Mitte

System & Utilities Face of Daniel Molkentin (danimo)So yesterday was the first evening/night for me to look at some things in Berlin. Even though I've been here for a couple of times I never really took the time to explore Mitte, so Sven Guckes was kind enough to give me and a guest from Denmark, a tour through the city.

While I usually take the S-Bahn or the Underground, we were using the DB call-a-bike service, as I don't have a bike on my own here yet. It's really cool if you need a bike just occasionally, and the bikes had surprisingly good quality. Sven took us through the city, brought us to a good and cheap pizza place and ultimately we ended up iat Dussmann, a big book/cd/cultural stuff store in the famous Friedrichsstra

Diederik van der Boor: KMess 2.0 progress, personal stuff

System & Utilities

With this blog entry I'd like to inform you all about the amazing progress we're making with KMess 2.0. It's been a bit quiet on the blogging side, but development surely didn't stop. The development timeline at trac.kmess.org reveals there are 200 commits within the last 30 days. :-)

Within a few days we hope to release a 2.0-alpha 2 release, which has the following new features:

  • Everything is running quite stable under KDE 4.
  • Tabbed chats are supported now. This is such a breeze, I wouldn't ever want to live without that anymore!
  • Every dialog received a nice makeover.
  • Connecting over HTTP is supported, making KMess usable for restricted LAN's.
  • Ink sending works!
  • Larger messages can be sent
  • MSNplus formatting can be displayed.
  • We've added an application-wide settings dialog for common settings.
  • Lots of nifty improvements everywhere; choose your fire transfer ports, automatically download to a folder, copy contact 'now listening' information, etc..

We stil have our share of things we like to improve, implement and annoyances to fix, so the upcoming release will still be called an alpha. Most ...read more...

Alejandro Wainzinger (xevix): MTP File Management and iPod Covers

System & Utilities So MTP file management (copying/deleting) has gotten implemented, and works well on all 3 devices I tested on. Still a lot of polishing left to do as far as interface goes, and some threading to not stall Amarok at key points, and it should be good to go. One thing I'm having issues with is copying files directly from an MTP to an iPod and vice versa, but will investigate this later as this is a bit more advanced.

So, I had a bit of an epic struggle with a few things over the last day or so. See, libgpod can only retrieve covers in the form of GdkPixbuf structs, but so as to not force the GdkPixbuf dependency on people, they return it as a gpointer which you can then choose to cast if you want to use GdkPixbuf. Sounds great, right? No problem...

... except for having CMake pull in the dependency. So as it turns out, there's no built-in module for gdk-pixbuf library. So, I decided to create my own as I did ...read more...

Troy Unrau: User experiences with Vista

System & Utilities Well, I've got a few new things to report afa user experiences go. First, I just bought my first laptop. I've had second-hand laptops in the past, but this is the first time I've bought a new one.

I walked into Staples (sort of a box-store for office supplies/etc.) and the sales guys immediately started to hver around me. To the first guy, I said, I'm willing to buy a new laptop immediately if you can show me one that will provide a good linux experience. He almost cried, but commission can make people do strange things. So he got the manager, and the manager started to deal with me personally as no one else had even heard of linux. Manager says: I haven't tried linux on any of these laptops, but we have this EEe thing here with linux on it. After informing him that I wanted a higher end computer, he decided to do whatever was required to make me happy.

So he logged one of the laptops onto the internal network, and asked me ...read more...

Johan Thelin: Attracting Fractals

System & Utilities So, more summer and more fractal fun. First of all, now everything is coloured by shaders. A shader, per my definition, picks the colour for any given point/line-segment depending on direction, iterations, or group - where group can be the factor set used (IFS fractals) or angle in predefined steps (L-systems) or just zero (all other fractals).

Below, you can see a maple leaf coloured based on the factor set used to get the specific point.

The latest addition to the number of supported fractals are attractors. Below, you can see a gradient coloured Lorenz attractor from a paralell projection showiing the X and Y axes (ignoring the Z axis).

The introduction of attractors really exposed the lack of properties. The idea is that each fractal provides a range of properties (be it ints, doubles or compex numbers - perhaps also enums). These can then be queried and set ...read more...

Antonio Aloisio: Qt 4 Maemo: the new experience.

System & Utilities

The Maemo platform is growing up day by day and its good software and hardware attract every day new people.
Unfortunately not all of these people are able to program in GTK, since they don’t use linux or because they are KDE people.
Qt4maemo was born as a natural answer to this leak. I compiled and uploaded the first Qt4 packages when I hadn’t got a Maemo device yet. Less than 2 months ago I was contacted by Nokia to work fulltime on this project. Obviously I accepted and now I spend most of my time behind a monitor hacking Qt! :)

Danny Kukawka: Lenovo ThinkPad X61t Touch support

System & Utilities
As I already wrote in the last post the linuxwacom driver now works with Touch devices as used in the Lenovo ThinkPad X61t. Today I tried to use the touch device, but unfortunately it's not full working with default settings as the other wacom input devices on TabletPCs. By default you can only use a part of the screen, the cursor never reaches the last 2-3 cm to the border of the screen.

I tried to calibrate the device with wacomcpl but I got alway an error. The reason was that wacomcpl wrongly detected all wacom input devices as core devices. I had to fix wacomcpl first, you can find the patch here.

Sadly also the fixed version of wacomcpl wasn't able to calibrate the touch device correctly. The touch device get active as soon as you hit the display with you finger or a non-EMR pen. This get interpreted by wacomcpl as click, you don't have a chance to put the cursor on the cross to get ...read more...

Alejandro Wainzinger (xevix): MTP Support Arrives

System & Utilities

This is a bit overdue, but initial support for MTP devices has arrived. To use it, you require limbtp >= 0.3.0 installed on the system, and a device supported by libmtp of course.

Part of the reason this took so long is that I'm starting to notice a lot of potentially reusable code, and will probably soon refactor to reflect this. MTP devices are strange beasts, because their filesystem can't be directly accessed. As a result, Amarok 1 and Windows Media Player et al can only do file management of tracks on these devices, not actually play directly off of them. I'm going to be working on an idea that allows playing off of them to be possible, because let's face it, A2 is an audio player, not just a file manager.

Thanks again to everyone who donated MTP devices to the Amarok group. You're the ones who make this possible. Support is still pretty basic, so please don't file bugs on this yet, but ...read more...

Fabrizio Montesi (fmontesi): Vision: a distributed presentation framework.

System & Utilities Vision is a proof of concept application (thanks aseigo for the initial suggestion), showing what can be easily obtained by using the service-oriented paradigm together with rich client applications.

What is Vision?
But, more importantly: what's a distributed presentation?

Imagine that you are showing a presentation, and that someone wants to see what you're presenting... in his computer! To do so, he should connect in some way to your presentation. Whenever you change page (or make another relevant action, like changing document), the client should be notified and synchronized automagically.
That is exactly what Vision does. It forms a network between the presenter and the clients, keeping the clients synchronized with the presentation.
A screencast is better than a thousand words: an example usage of vision with the previewer plasmoid and kpdf.

As you can see in the screencast, Vision already supports more than one viewer (there are shown kpdf and the previewer plasmoid, but we also already support okular).

Another nice feature of Vision is that it forms a P2P ...read more...

Fabrizio Montesi (fmontesi): Starting up: another blog in the cauldron.

System & Utilities Hello, readers.
So here I am, another piece in the blogosphere. This blog will be about the development of JOLIE, a language for service-oriented programming, and all of its related works.

As of this first post, this blog is on Planet KDE; the following says why.

If you read the planet, you should have seen JOLIE cited here and there already. Basically I'm on Planet KDE because we, the JOLIE and KDE (Plasma especially) projects, are cooperating in order to bring the power of service-oriented computing (see also: service-oriented architecture, service-oriented programming, etc.) to the desktop.
This blog of mine is here also to explain what this means and will mean for the KDE desktop, and to show the practical results of this effort. Stay tuned with my blog if you want to know more!
