Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Almost a gnome

System & Utilities

While reading ESR's blog I came across a questionnaire to find out what kind of D&D character I'd be. I've only once joined in on a D&D role-playing evening and found it was not for me. This query is interesting though because of the many questions you have to answer and for which you have to make up your mind about which of the given options applies best to you.

Here are the results. Scroll to the bottom to find out about the gnome part.

Qt released

Qt logo
Since the saying “The release is not out until you blog about it” is still in effect, I have the pleasure of announcing that Qt 4.4.1 has been released.

Here’s the download button:

Download Qt

The 4.4.1 release is a patch-level release, meaning it’s a bug-fix release on top of Qt 4.4.0, maintaining both forward and backwards compatibility. It’s a drop-in replacement for Qt 4.4.0 and shouldn’t cause you any problems.

The full changelog can be found on our website.

This release happened about a month later than I had originally planned to. We postponed it until we could make sure that 4.4.1 is better than 4.4.0. Also, we can find explanations relating to Summer in Norway:

  • Key people leaving for vacations
  • Scheduled power supply cuts
  • Air conditioning machines being turned off in our building
  • Temperatures in Norway being quite high ...read more...

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Le KDE sprechen

System & Utilities Kubuntu users now also can get a localized KDE ;-)

Just install you language's package, e.g. kde-l10n-de for german, then do the following:
Kickoff -> System Settings -> Regional & Language
there you can select Country/Region which should auto-adjust a couple of stuff to your local preferences (for example the date formatting) in addition to that it should also select the installed language. If this fails for whatever reason, use the "Add Language" drop-down menu instead.

Beside l10n, we also uploaded a couple of extragear packages like KTorrent, Skanlite and KFax.

Pimp my Konqueror
Installing konqueror-plugin-searchbar-kde4 will add the world famous google searchbar to your konqueror again ;-)
Also checkout the other konqueror-plugin-* packages, maybe you want to install some of them.

Roland Wolters (liquidat): New Linux file system in development: Tux3

System & Utilities

Tux
Recently Daniel Phillips announced that he is developing a new file system, Tux3. It plans to be a modern file system on level with ZFS and the currently also still in development Btrfs.

While there are many file systems like ext3, Xfs, Jfs and others are available for Linux it currently lacks a modern, new age file system: especially features like versions and writable snapshots are hardly available. On the other hand, other Unixes do have such file systems: OpenSolaris and some BSDs have ZFS, and DragonFly BSD has HAMMER.

To fill this gap the Oracle’s Chris Manson started the development of Btrfs a year ago. Now Daniel Phillips also announced that he is developing a new file system, Tux3. The general aims are indeed close to the general aims of the other mentioned file systems.
Also, Daniel is ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): KDE on Windows

System & Utilities

KDE 4.1 on Windows is really amazing. Some parts are buggy, of course, other parts aren't there yet -- but with 4.1, Dolphin starts up in the wink of an eye, kwrite is stable and useful, the games are lots of fun. Pity Umbrello and Akregator aren't all that stable yet -- but neither are they on Linux. Really impressive work by the KDE-on-Windows team!

And KDE on windows is, at least until the end of the month, a godsent for me. I don't use it at home, but at work. And when my current employer is too cheap to pay for, for instance, enough licenses of Paintshop Pro, so when I have to update the logo, I need to find another solution. Enter Krita. Kate is a better editor than most, and especially better than the monstrosity that is the Borland 2007 IDE -- which cannot even properly remember your indentation preferences and tends to give an index-out-of-range exception when editing source file.

But all in all, despite the great work done by the KDE on Windows people, I ...read more...

Wade Olson: amarok distraction

System & Utilities

From my last blog entry, some people inquired about using the amarok image as a splash screen.  Not necessarily what I intended, but a cool idea nonetheless.  It wasn’t ideal since it had a tiny, tiny KDE logo and “Be Free” text.  So I went back and tweaked that image as well as some others.

If you’re asking, “Wade, that’s all well and good, but how the hell does this merit a blog entry?  Why don’t you just post to kde-look.org, shut up, and call it a day?”  Great question.  I have no idea why.  Probably because I wanted to finish one of my twenty half-written blogs today, but got to daydreaming on this and guilted myself into calling it a blog entry.  You satisfied?

Here’s the slightly tweaked version that’s a bit more appropriate for a splash screen (one that is a good choice for a release candidate that refers to the anticipation of the final release):

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): KDE4 on other platforms

System & Utilities [[ This post mostly inspired by a thread on the Dot, where it's somewhat misplaced. ]]

With KDE4.1 released we can look at how it's doing on platforms other than Linux. It seems the Linux distros are tripping over each other trying to get KDE 4.1 out there, with Arch and SUSE leading the pack as far as I can tell from the blog entries. Heck, even Ars Technica has some kind words for it, where Ryan Paul has been (justifiably) highly critical in the past. But what about non-Linux?

Consider the developer base for KDE. I'd guess that it is about 95% Linux users. That's just a guess and I don't know of any effective way to refine that guess, but based on who I know within the community, I feel that's reasonable. So, working with that guess: of the 240 committers the last commit digest notes only 12 use something other than Linux. 12? Maybe my guess ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: Be my mirror, my sword and shield

System & Utilities

The real blog title should be: experimental live tab (thumbnail) preview in Arora.

The nice thing about hacking on WebKit is, whenever you feel you want to experiment with some whacky web browser features, you can just go ahead and implement it. The code base is clean and easy to understand. For example, I always wonder how difficult it is to have a tab thumbnail preview like in Opera, where you hover the cursor on a tab and it displays the preview of the web page in that tab. This makes it easy for you to work with dozens of tabs (I know someone in Trolltech who opens at least 30 tabs in a browser :-), because often you can have a glance of the tab before really switch to that tab.

Today [1] I decided to give it a try, of course with QtWebKit. The victim is Arora, the famous lightweight QtWebKit-based web browser. Giving it a thought, there are surely million ways to ...read more...

Anne-Marie Mahfouf (annma): Vacation

System & Utilities Letting you all know that I already mostly was on vacation in July (we spent 1 wonderful week in England at Mersea Island) and that I'll be away the whole of August (3 weeks in my family village in Burgundy and 1 week by the sea), my husband will go to Canada for 2 weeks for his work and our son Joachim is heading to the Ivory Coast for 3 weeks. With Blandine in Brazil, we invade 3 continents!
I won't be at Akademy and won't be able to follow anything as the house we live in in Burgundy has no land phone and even less internet. I do have a cell phone since recently but not a G3 one ;) Wifi is quite unknown of in this rural area... I'll be back in September in full working mode for KDE! Meanwhile it's family priority.
I wish you all a great and productive Akademy, heading towards 4.2 and congrats to everyone for 4.1. I'll make sure to casually log into KDE trunk on my new laptop (I plan to ...read more...

Tom Albers: Asus EEE 901

System & Utilities

Currently I love to get my hands on Asus EEE 901 laptops. I want one and two co-workers too. So I want three of them. Unfortunatly Asus only delivers the 900 versions or the 901 Windows version of them in The Netherlands. I've looked in Germany, but could not find them there either. I've seen some online shops in the UK that have them, thought the ones that have them in stock seem to increase there price tags.

So if anyone knows where to get them, without too much problems with power adapters, chinese signs on the keyboard or something like that, please let me know...

Tom Albers: Compiling with Windows

System & Utilities

My company needs some small applications for our customers, so last weekend I started some Qt4-applications. We need them to run with Microsoft Windows, so I removed the dust from my Windows Vista and started installing things. I must say it takes a while to get the hang of Windows again. Annoying is that stuff is not in the path on the command line.

After installing a subversion client to check out the sources, after that installing Vim for Windows. And after that I needed Qt and a compiler and stuff. Fortunately, the Qt windows installer asks if you want to install the 'compiler and stuff' part. So it installs everything is needed. Trolltech did a good job there.

After that qmake and make works without problems. That is, there is no debug output printed to the console. You need a separate application 'debugview' which shows you all the output. Now I'm recompiling Qt with debug symbols, so that will take a bit. If you are using Vista, you need to add 'SET PATH=%PATH%;C:MinGWlibexecgccmingw323.4.2' to your qtvars.bat, else it ...read more...

Wade Olson: KDE 4.1 and Amarok 2.0 alpha

System & Utilities

Well, installed SUSE 11.0 and KDE 4.1 on my Thinkpad.  That sentence itself deserves a very long blog entry, and we’ll get there.  But it may have to wait.  Since this tagline was thrown onto the homepage…

…I need to spend some more time on concept clarification.  Stay tuned.

But, the 4.1 release, combined with the impending Beijing Olympics and my sleep deprivation have combined to make the World’s (T-t-t-torsten combo breaker: marble) Most Inappropriate Placard ™ of gratitude:

Thanks devs.  Now get in line for a drug test.  The quantity and quality of commits can’t be natural.

On the Amarok side, the second alpha leads me to ask:

This will be me in roughly four days at the NIN concert.  Yes Celeste, that means that they showed up specifically for my birthday.  Friends do that for each other.

Anyway, if you’re so deranged that you want larger versions of these images, you ...read more...

Rolf Eike Beer (Dakon): KDE folks from southwest Germany around?

System & Utilities

Vir (Heidelberg) and Martin Gräßlin (Mannheim) were announced to be from the same area where I currently hang around. Also the amazing Amarok dwarf (SCNR), Lemma and at least one other member of the Amarok gang are not from far away (Karlsruhe). Obviously there will be some more people I'm not aware of. Since there is such a bunch of KDE contributors in the area and the travel would take only one hour with suburban railway or even less using high speed trains I wondered if we shouldn't think about some local hacking event. Surely not before Akademy, but maybe some time in October or something like that. If you are from the area just mail me or query me on freenode to get in touch.

Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Only Firefox 3 handles Javascript menace well

System & Utilities

After visiting a really nice collection of exhibit gardens, I decided to make an application to see how different plants are related by making a phylogentic tree generating webpage.

For many groups of species, the familiar relationships have been examined very well, but for the combination of arbitrary species, you have to rely on taxonomic data for now. A convenient resource for getting at this data is NCBI taxonomy (ftp). This data has unfortunately has no distance between the branch points, but it's nice enough for starters.

For implementing the website I do not want to rely on server-side scripts. So the page will have to process the data via javascript. The current development version has a 12 Mb JSON file. This is the minimal amount of data for working on a tree with all species listed by NCBI.

And this is where the problems start. Because javascript is not the most efficient language for doing this. And the ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): Openchange resource - SoC update

System & Utilities

Its been a long time (again) between blog entries. The good news is that this time I have something interesting to show: Mailody using Akonadi and OpenChange to get mail from a Microsoft Exchange server, using native protocols.

Of course, I didn't actually do this myself - all the hard work was done by Alan Alvarez (SoC student for the OpenChange project). I'm just basking in the reflected glory.

Enough of the talk - bring on the screenies!

First, plain text (click for bigger):
Mailody / OpenChange - Plain Text

and for those who would prefer HTML (click for bigger):
Mailody / OpenChange - HTML
(I'm not sure why the images aren't showing - I think my Qt is built with GIF support - perhaps might be something that Mailody doesn't handle?).

The way this works is that Mailody talks the akonadiserver, ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Implicit Save

System & Utilities Face of Celeste Paul (seele)

One of the interesting things I learned at the last Ubuntu Developer Summit was the widespread use of implicit save in the GNOME environment.

Implicit Save (or can also be called instant apply or instant editing) is when changes made by the user are automatically saved by the system without the need of the user confirming the changes by performing a Save or Apply action (implied to be so by the action of the user making the change). Explicit Save is when the user explicitly confirms the change by performing a Save or Apply action.

In many cases, implicit save makes a lot of sense and makes the configuration and interaction with options much more natural. For example, consider (Ubuntu) GNOME’s Appearance Preferences dialogs. The widget theme selected is the current theme. Select a different theme and it is changed immediately and automatically:

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 9

System & Utilities

whew! what a busy week. I feel like I got a lot done.

I fixed a bunch of little bugs - appletbrowser goes away when plasma is locked, plasma always starts locked, and plasma always gets activated properly when it starts up.

I made stuff behave more sensibly - the toolbox only opens when it can actually be used, and the timeout for making plasma go idle isn’t hardcoded o 20s any more.

I added some features, too - there’s an action in the toolbox to quit the screensaver (asking for a password if you haven’t recently entered it), trying to click plasma stuff when the unlock dialog is up will dismiss the dialog and let you start interacting with plasma, and there’s a ‘Setup…’ button in the screensaver kcm that runs lockprocess in a convenient setup-mode with plasma immediately unlocked and ready for configuring.

oh, and I took some time to go work on libplasma instead of my soc project: I fixed that bug with adding activities - but then discovered 4.1 is about to be *released* ...read more...

So I've been hugely busy and neglected a whole heap of my responsibilities recently.... And now I'm on holiday. Ish.

Like the other cool kids of KDE, I'm in Berlin. Like danimo, I also had some tour guides yesterday (Cheers Mirko, cheers Till). Having been here a few times before it wasn't exactly a "standard" tour...

"Alexanderplatz is back that way. The hookers can be found down there. But we're heading up this way where you can get lots of decent beer."

I'm normally pretty bad at taking pictures when I travel. I hardly take any pictures in general. Today, however, I had to get a picture of the Berliner Fernsehturm. The view from my hotel room provides a great opportunity for this.
