Bertjan Broeksema: Exporting symbols only for testing.

System & Utilities

I finally tried out what I wanted to try for some time now. The problem (if you can call it a problem) I had is that one of the libs I worked on for my GSoC contained class that I wanted to test but that I did not want to expose to the rest of the world. As I did not have the time nor the knowledge to make that happen I just exported the classes so that the testcode could link against it.

Well that changed today and I took some time to figure this out. (Note: I'm not an expert on C++, libraries and such so if I do stupid things here, let me know). In the KPilot code we have an KPILOT_EXPORT define which looks like this:

#include <kdemacros.h>

#ifndef KPILOT_EXPORT
# if defined(MAKE_KPILOT_LIB)
/* We are building this library */
# define KPILOT_EXPORT KDE_EXPORT
# else
/* We are using this library */
# define KPILOT_EXPORT KDE_IMPORT
# endif
#endif

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE 4.2 and KPilot Status

System & Utilities

Bertjan has already done a very nice job of giving an overview of where we are with this year’s GSOC project and where KPilot is in general. I wanted to add a couple of things to this train of thought too…

First off, this is the second year that I’ve worked with Bertjan on a Google Summer of Code project and I have thoroughly enjoyed both years. Last year, our goal was to create a base conduit framework that could be used to unify KPilot’s conduit code and push down into it all of the synchronization logic that was previously spread across all of the individual conduits. This was a success, and Bertjan also wrote a new Keyring conduit that implemented the new base conduit infrastructure. Unfortunately, these were dark days for KPilot and neither Bertjan nor I nor Adriaan had any more time to give to our little KPilot friend. KPilot was semi-ported to Qt4/KDE4, but none of our KDE ...read more...

Girish Ramakrishnan: Looking for a maintainer for KDocker

System & Utilities Standard excuse - I have no time. I am looking for maintainer(s) for KDocker. Unlike it's name suggests, it's not a KDE application, it's plain Qt 3.

Over the years (literally), I have just ignored bugs, feature requests, patches from many (~100) people. Today, I got a mail from Peter Toushkov with updated bulgarian translations. IIRC, there are two new language translations archived somewhere in my gmail account. I feel very bad about all the effort put in by these people go waste. I should have written this maybe a year back, but better late than never.

Why would you want to work on it?
- You get to learn a lot of Qt and X11 . In fact, this knowledge is what helped me write QSystemTrayIcon at TT :). Some of the code in there is quite hard to get right on all WM.
- Actually, there is no maintanence work. The first task would probably be to rewrite everything in Qt4 using QSystemTrayIcon and still call the new code kdocker.

Jason Harris (LMCboy): Highlighting Akarsh Simha's GSoC work

System & Utilities

Akarsh Simha is pursuing a very ambitious project for Google Summer of Code 2008: He's increasing the number of stars displayed by KStars by a factor of 10 (from 130,000 to over 1 million), without having a negative impact on the performance of the program. James Bowlin and I are his co-mentors in this project. James and Akarsh spent the pre-coding SoC period hashing out the code architecture required for this effort, which allowed Akarsh to hit the ground running when he started to code. His progress has been amazing: in the kstars/summer branch, we are already displaying over 2 million stars, and it feels just as responsive as trunk, because the new architecture is extremely efficient in memory usage.

Sound too good to be true? Check out this side-by-side comparison of 3.5 branch and trunk, where I zoom in on the Carina nebula region with both versions of the program.

We already have plans to increase the number of stars to 10 million, 100 million...maybe even 1 billion stars. However, the data ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): State of KDE4 on FreeBSD (Aug 2008)

System & Utilities There's this Waterboys song, "The Return of Jimi Hendrix" which sticks in my head, somehow I feel it's appropriate for the KDE-FreeBSD team which has come back in a very impressive way from being quiet. The KDE-FreeBSD website has been updated, finally, with links to pages describing how you can get KDE4 (4.1.0) from the area51 ports. That means that the packaging is mostly done and it's time for knowledgable users who can interpret ports failures at least a little bit to start using those ports.

Some notes I kept while installing KDE 4.1.0 on my home workstation under FreeBSD 7-STABLE:
  • Union mount area51 over /usr/ports; and remember to unmount it before doing a cvsup on ports, or you'll break everything.
  • Clean out any area51 ports before re-trying the build; I still had a qt4-phonon installed, which will break much later during the kdelibs build.
  • You may have to install multimedia/phonon first before trying the KDE4 ports; the usual tols will do the trick.
  • The kdebase4 package no longer delivers a fully functioning, but minimalistic, desktop. You're going ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): KDE 3.5.10 to be released in August

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
KDE 4.1 was released just days ago, but the KDE team already prepares the next release for August: KDE 3.5.10. While there won’t be any new features in it it will contain many bugfixes.

With the release of KDE 4.0 many users were disappointed about missing functions. And while KDE 4.1 is out the discussion still goes on. However, most users seem to forget that there is a perfectly valid possibility to use KDE right now without updating yet to a KDE 4.x release: continue using KDE 3.5. In fact, many business desktops and many industry setups with KDE do use KDE 3.5.x, and will continue to do so for quite some months and years in the future.

And this alternative will get another release in August: KDE 3.5.10. That is actually the second KDE 3.5.x release since KDE 4.0 was released, and shows how much the KDE project is committed to its user base.

Still, ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Perl fun

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So in the course of developing the next code feature I plan to add to kdesvn-build (nothing major, just adding a persistent data store) I came across what I consider an oddity:

Imagine that we had a hash table, mapping module names to the count of consecutive build failures. Now let’s say we want to pare down this hash table to a list of modules with more than a given number of consecutive build failures (3 as an example). This could be done using Perl’s grep function to strip out list entries that don’t match a given criteria (in this case, hash keys whose associated failure count is not >3).

Now I didn’t feel like making this test inline (although it would not have changed the end result) so let’s assume that I put my comparison function separately in an anonymous subroutine:

# does not do what you expect
my $matchRoutine = sub {
    my $mod = shift;

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Catalan Summer of Code

System & Utilities Face of Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos)So Catalan government decided to run a project similar to Google's Summer of code program. That's cool, the bad news is that the law that grants the money was approved as of May 30th and i just discovered the site because i was doing some random browsing.

So if you can read catalan go to http://www.lafarga.cat/beques/bases-de-la-convocatoria and start thinking what to do for Free Software.

Actually it seems like it's non-published on purpose so either:
a) It fails and politics can say "See Catalonia has no interest for Free Software" and they can go on paying Microsoft for doing sucky and patchy translations of their products to Catalan (yes they pay twice, license and translation)
b) Someone's son needs to make sure he is the chosen one, so the less publicity the better.

System & Utilities Face of Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos)The new poppler major version that will come out in a month or so, sports a new JPEG2000 decoder based in OpenJPEG that is better than the current one, for example, it renders Google scanned docs, that is good. System & Utilities

Just a small post to let you know that extenders are now present in trunk/. Past week we’ve had quite an api review on the plasma-devel mailing list, and the extender api has improved a lot. A big thanks to everybody participating in that review!
Making changes to the new api was quite a task, but most of the stuff seems to work quite decent now. There are of course some rough edges and some known bugs, but they basically work. I’m looking forward to seeing what others do with this api. :)

I’ve also committed the first extender using applet in playground: the kuiserver applet (and of course dataengine). It’s unfortunately not usable anymore in a panel, but I’m working on that. The idea is to use the quite new popupapplet class which is a basic applet that switches between an icon which opens a popup showing a widget when in a panel, and just showing the widget when on the desktop. If you wish to try the kuiserver applet, you’ll ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): How does your garden grow?

System & Utilities This is your macbook*:

This is your macbook covered in zucchini:

I remember Tom Chance, our green guy, posting lots of pictures of his garden and its produce. Well, it's high summer and the garden is producing huge amounts of zucchini. We didn't pay much attention to it for a week, which means that we ended up with a half-dozen 13" zucchini. That makes for a kind of monotonous diet, so, as befits zucchini-plant owners everywhere, we're inflicting them on everyone in range. We also got one 20" zucchini, which I figured was too heavy to put on the mac.

* No, it's my macbook. Apologies to Gary Larson.

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Ark: First password protected RAR file unextracted

System & Utilities

So I finally managed to find a clean way to bring passwords into Ark without disturbing the interface too much. So far, passwords are a property set on a current archive, and used for all files that are encrypted/protected. Differing passwords for different files are not supported (has anyone even seen this used?)

A new contributor, Yew Ming, has started hacking on the Ark codebase. The first feature he is working on is 7zip support for Ark. Hopefully we can gradually get Ark up and living again.

Also, I was recently made the new maintainer of Ark, despite my efforts to just limit this whole thing to a few interface improvements. I guess anything is better than the dead state it was in until recently. Henrique Pinto, if you’re reading this, I have quite a bit of questions I’d like to ask you about the Ark architecture. Several people seems to be unable to reach you from the KDE email. Any other place I can reach you?

Ariya Hidayat: quattro quattro uno

System & Utilities

In case you live under the rock and miss Thiago's latest blog post, Qt 4.4.1 was just released. This is just a few days after KDE 4.1 was announced and close to three months after Qt 4.4.0 was out.

This patch release adds tons of bug fixes to the 4.4.0 release. For the WebKit team inside Trolltech Nokia's Qt Software Unit (by team here it means a group of developers you can count with one of your hand, and still not everyone works full-time on WebKit), beside the usual feature development (like Phonon-based media and Netscape plugin support), we did spend a lot of time fixing important bugs, as evidenced from the 4.4.1 changes.

On to Qt 4.4.2 and KDE 4.2. The latter would be ten percent of the ultimate answer to life, the universe, and everything...

Danny Kukawka: TabletPC: ASUS R1E/R1F support

System & Utilities
I added support for two USB Wacom based TabletPCs from ASUS, the R1E and the R1F, to SaX2 ([1]). Unfortunately SaX2 wasn't able to handle the "Device" correctly, neither /dev/input/wacom nor /dev/input/by-{id,path}/* was excepted by SaX2 also if it was correctly set in the config database entry. The input device path was always set back to /dev/input/event0 and not only TabletPC where affected. I fixed it with a patch ([2]) to extend the existing path checks.

While fixing the USB device paths I also discovered a problem with the serial (/dev/ttyS*) device paths while testing the existing entry for the HP tc4200 which needs to use COM-3 (/dev/ttyS2). The device was always set to /dev/ttyS1. Fixed also this problem with a patch ([3]) for SaX2.

Additionally I've extended the existing generic 'Wacom ISDV4 TABLET PC (SERIAL)' entry to support also Touch devices and added a new generic entry for TabletPCs with USB Wacom devices [4].

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Howto: Updating Dell Firmware on Linux

System & Utilities

fedora-logo-bubble
A recent hardware bug in NVIDIA cards made it necessary to update the firmware on quite some laptop models. Usually firmware updates are only provided for Windows machines, but Dell provides all tool needed for firmware updates on Linux.

NVIDIA has a tough time right now: there are unresolved driver issues on Linux, and now a serious hardware problem came up: many graphic cards are broken, and some might even be fried in the machine.

There is a workaround available making sure to not overheat the card, though. This workaround however often requires a firmware update on the used machine. Firmware updates are most often difficult on Linux and require some work. However, Dell is one of the pleasant exceptions: Dell provides the technique, the software and even precompiled binaries in distribution specific repositories to easily update the firmware.

The only disadvantage is that you ...read more...

Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): I love GIT

System & Utilities

I have many ideas and limited time. And many of the ideas I want to work on get interrupted by pressing concerns such as bug fixing and high priority features. Because of this, I tend to have many small improvements lying around in my trunk. Then when the time comes to commit a quick bug fix, I face an 'svn status' output with lots of 'A', 'M' and '?' indicators. In short: a time sink.

But today I switched to git. I'd experimented with git before and had to get used to the new commands. But the advantages of maintaining many branches easily was always very appealing.

I used git-svn to check out the code and that was a nice trip down memory lane. git-svn will not just check out the current version of trunk. It will get all of the versions of your project, even when the location of the project in the hierarchy has changed.

Checking out Strigi showed me 'trunk/kdesupport/strigi', 'trunk/playground/base/strigi', 'trunk/playground/base/kitten' and 'branches/work/kde4/playground/libs/archivereader'. That's right: the origin of Strigi was in 'branches/work/kde4' in April 2006.
