Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Stuff near you in wikipedia

System & Utilities

A while back I blogged about querying dbpedia with sparql. The queries in that blog were pretty simple. Today, I present a more complicated example.

SELECT ?a, ?long, ?lat WHERE {
  <http://dbpedia.org/resource/Borne%2C_Overijssel> <http://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/wgs84_pos#long> ?centerlong ;
                                                    <http://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/wgs84_pos#lat>  ?centerlat .
  ?a <http://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/wgs84_pos#long> ?long ;
     <http://www.w3.org/2003/01/geo/wgs84_pos#lat>  ?lat .
  FILTER ( -(?long - ?centerlong)*(?long - ?centerlong) - (?lat - ?centerlat)*(?lat - ?centerlat) > -0.01 )
}

This query gives you all items in the english Wikipedia near where I live.

You could also look for stuff near Gran Canaria or Berlin.

Danny Kukawka: TabletPCs: HP Pavilion tx2000/tx2100/tx2500 support

System & Utilities
Today I've extended SaX2 to support also the Touch devices of the Wacom USB TabletPCs since the touch input devices have now persistent /dev/input/by-id links (see my last post). My SaX2 version supports now these new machines:
  • HP Pavilion tx2000 series [2]
  • HP Pavilion tx2100 series [2]
  • HP Pavilion tx2500 series [1]
  • generic Wacom USB TabletPC (added touch device to existing entry) [3]
You can get my SaX2 package for openSUSE 10.2/10.3/11.0/Factory from my Build Service repo (be sure that you also update udev from my repo). As soon as the patches for udev are gone upstream also the SaX2 patches go into the upstream repo.

Let me know if you have any problems with the new entries on these machines. If you e.g. still need to calibrate the input devices manually tell me the BottomX/Y and TopX/Y values and I update SaX2.

Rafael Fernandez Lopez (ereslibre): Contribution request

System & Utilities

I don’t consider this a bugsquash, but I could do it perfectly. However, after fixing toolbar positioning problems on kdelibs, I just saw some applications (probably 3 out of 7 that I started) not doing stuff correctly (ignoring my toolbar positioning preferences). As an example, I fired up: konqueror, gwenview, kate, dolphin, kwrite, umbrello, kopete and kontact.

Konqueror: fine.

Gwenview: fine.

Kate: fail.

Dolphin: fine (after some fixing I did yesterday), it would have been a fail.

KWrite: fine.

Umbrello: fail.

Kontact: fail in certain situations (if the component modified is the one being loaded on start).

I don’t consider this is good stats. For that reason I want you to contribute, by filling on bug reports which applications are not restoring correctly your preferences. Please note, this is very important: i am only asking for those applications that are not storing correctly any toolbar/dockview position/configuration (like text next to icon, text below icon)… And please, later email me with the bug report.

I am interested in fixing all this sort of bugs. If libraries are fine, but applications are ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): AutoRealm

System & Utilities

I've told the story before: I started working on Krita because I got a graphics tablet and wanted to paint maps for a novel. Well, right now, I've got another reason to draw a map, to do with our ongoing fantasy roleplaying game soap (running for over a decade now gaming time, and about 35 years in-game time. And you know what? Krita isn't yet suitable for drawing maps with yet, although it's getting great for messing with photographs, sketching and painting.

And, actually, map-making software isn't all that close akin to a raster image editor. It's much closer to what Kivio or Karbon are. But there are also dedicated applications. Only one of them is free software software, that I could find: Andy Gryc's AutoREALM. This application started out as for-pay, windows-only Delphi application way back. Then it was open-sourced, and porting was started from Delphi to wx-widgets and C++, before Qt became free software on all main platforms.

Currently, there is some development ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): file dialog layout

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Not that you could tell from my blog, but I do hack on things other than Plasma as well. ;) It seems that once or twice a year I end up spending some time on the file dialog, and it's apparently that time of year again.

Right now the All Powerful KDE File Dialog has a few unfortunate usability, visual and functionality quirks that diminish it's wonderfulness. (Is that even a word?) I didn't feel like doing anything too major to it as it's a proven model; that and I don't want to spend too much time on it either given all the other things I've got on the go. But still ... It needs a bit of love right now.

After fiddling with it a bit, I dropped an email to the usability list. Discussion ensued, and Peter Penz provided some data he gathered from user testing he'd done with it. (It's very nice how the number of people working on file management stuff has really ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): KTorrent + Plasma = Good Times

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)I just found out today that KTorrent ships with a DataEngine and Plasmoid. (Yes, sometimes I'm a bit slow. ;) Now I can watch my torrents progress without having to keep popping up the KTorrent window. Nice!

This inspired me to do a little bit of hacking on the applet this evening. When the icon is clicked, it now pops up the KTorrent window and if you drop an entry from KTorrent to the desktop KTorrent plasmoid is created.

Since KTorrent already has drag and drop support internally, all I had to do to get plasmoid creation working was add one line to the plasma-applet-ktorrent.desktop file: X-Plasma-DropMimeTypes=application/x-ktorrent-drag-object. Extra nice!

It took 17 lines of code, however, to have the plasmoid set itself to the dropped plasmoid. There's obviously room for improvement there in the Plasma API. Possible improvements might include a way to get at the drop data as text (would have eliminated 4 lines) and a way to query an engine for a sorce based ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: Wacom USB TabletPCs: persistent by-id links

System & Utilities
Since the linuxwacom package supports TabletPCs with USB tablets we have the problem to find the correct devices under /dev/input/* for the xorg.conf settings. While the input device of the stylus was easy to find (/dev/input/by-id/usb-Tablet_ISD-V4-event-mouse) but strange named, the input device file for the touch device needed to be searched by the user since there was no persistent link under /dev/input/by-id/ that would allow to use the same link for all USB based Wacom TabletPCs.

Now I've found a way to change udev to set also a persistent by-id link for the touch device. I also change the naming of the link to the stylus device. With my patch you get now these links under /dev/input/by-id/ :
tux@linux:/ # ls /dev/input/by-id/
usb-Tablet_ISD-V4-event-stylus
usb-Tablet_ISD-V4-event-touch
usb-Tablet_ISD-V4-stylus
usb-Tablet_ISD-V4-touch
The input devices you needed for you xorg.conf are the *-event-* links.

If you use openSUSE you can get patched udev versions from my buildservice repo. I've patched also SaX2 to handle the new link names (packages see here). Note: ...read more...

Holger Freyther (zecke): Acid3, make QtWebKit catch up

System & Utilities
qtwebkit-acid3

The Mac, Windows and Gtk+ port get 100/100 and pixel perfection for the acid3 test for quite a while but the Qt port was stuck somewhere else. How can this happen? For QtWebKit we decided to use as much of Qt as possible. So instead of relying on ICU we used the Qt Unicode support, instead of relying on libxml2 we used the QXmlStreamReader, instead of doing font matching and font/glyph caching we solely rely on QFont and QTextLayout to do the job. One had to apply some minor fixes to the Qt version of classes such as XMLTokenizer or TextCodec, or integrate SVGFonts into the Qt port as well...

What is next? We will have to get the rendering to be pixel perfect as well and then can merge the changes chunk by chunk. I'm going to sleep now, enjoy the screenshot.

Wade Olson: What 300mil can and cannot buy

System & Utilities

I like Seinfeld.  Watch his re-runs all the time.  This does not necessarily mean that he may bias my opinions or anyone’s opinion on the merits of Vista.  Marketing has the odd concept of a testimonial.  “I’m famous and I use this deodorant.  You want to stay unfamous and lame and smelly?  Then keep using the deodorant you’re using.  Otherwise be like me and be awesome and smell awesome.”  Why this works is beyond me, but it does.  Apparently Sinbad was already busy.  Hint for MS:  Everyone who will fall in love with your Seinfeld commercials already uses your products and doesn’t need reinforcement.  The influential and desirable demographic is busy buying Apple hardware and then installing KDE on it.  They don’t care about 90’s comedians.

In the months before Vista launched, I pointed out their missteps in needless product complexity, reduction of compelling purchase reasons, unrealistic price points and confusing/misleading hardware capability programs.  Now they’re at it again.  Is it that MS doesn’t understand how to run as ...read more...

Wade Olson: Be careful of what you wish for

System & Utilities

Because I’m an Idiot ™, although I really liked the look of the Akademy shirts, I never actually bought one.  I was thinking about it the last day, but got tied up and then had to leave.  Of course, immediately after departing, I wanted one.  So I emailed Sebas and asked if he could pick me up a shirt.  And I’m glad that he got one for me, because it sounded like a simple 72 Step Process to figure out your actual size.

So I get home from work and I see a package sitting on my steps.  It has “USA” in the address and postage paid in euros.

Could it be?  How did Sebas send out a shirt so quickly when he was at a conference?  Looking closer, this actually looked like the packaging from the motherboard that I smuggled (still sitting on a pillow) through U.S. Customs for Sebas - this had to be from him.  I finally notice the return address.  And when I opened it ...read more...

Vyacheslav Tokarev (vtokarev): soc is over, khtml is not

System & Utilities

GSoC is over for quite a while now, but that was a great time and it really helps if you want to join any open source community like KDE.

So, several days ago I was having discussion about multi-pattern search algorithm with SadEagle that could be used with adblock filtering. And I like the topic of high-performant algorithm. The same day I was reading several articles on that, the next day I was hacking on modified Rabin-Karp’s algorithm. Then I tried several more approaches, like Aho-Corasick.

A bit of testing, debugging, profiling and voila: several days after you could see the commit with numbers in it “7.6x improvement”. And us usual for practice approach (especially, with relatively short strings) algorithm shouldn’t be too complex but I enjoyed my little research anyway.

Big thanks for SadEagle, cause he did great job with it too. As well as performance improvement you could see ad block is now more compatible with adblock plus. and it supports whitelisting too.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): kwin ftw

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Since I'm a little obsessed these days with software design that is adaptive, flexible and sturdy, it was with interest I read Lubos "Seli" Lunak's recent blog where he said:

"KWin's design is still about the same like in KDE2.0, and, apparently, it still just works. I can't see a problem with not having been designed from the group up for compositing, something that nobody even thought about at that time, yet getting there when the time comes"

That is really impressive as imeans that the code has the property of being able to go the distance by being easily extended and reworked without having to toss the whole lot.

What was really great to read in that same blog entry was that Seli has optimized KWin's performance and that it should now generally be on par with Compiz. Very, very nice.

We should keep in mind, however, that this is only half the battle: the effects themselves also need to be ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Twenty five or six to four, FLA?

System & Utilities One of the things that was done at the KDE e.V. general assembly at Akademy was the acceptance of an FLA (Fiduciary License Agreement) for KDE code. The FSFE press release and the dot story complement each other. Other coverage includes Aaron's blog and Groklaw.

There is a little bit of confusion about the FLA out there, so I thought I would post a few clarifying comments:
  • A fiduciary license agreement is an agreement between you (usually a software developer with a copyrightable code contribution) and another party whom you trust . This other party is the fiduciary (from Latin fides, I imagine). If you don't trust the other party, then they are not fiduciary and you can skip the whole rest of the discussion. (See also fides, sed cui vide ).
  • The FSFE (Free Software Foundation Europe) wrote an FLA for itself with which Free Software contributors can assign the copyright in their works to the FSFE. That works if you trust the ...read more...

Lucas Murray (Zarin): New present windows layouts

System & Utilities

There are now three layouts modes that can be used in the KWin present windows desktop effect:

  • Regular grid - The old layout that displays windows next to each other on a grid,
  • Flexible grid - Similarly to the regular grid except each grid cell doesn't need to line up with the others, and
  • "Natural" - Absolutely no grid at all, each window is placed wherever it best fits. (The new default)

Also fixed a bug that prevented correct keyboard operation on multi-monitor systems.

Elsewhere in KWin

  • Present windows can (Kind of) be used as the Alt+Tab window switcher
  • Lots and lots of optimizations
  • Magic lamp effect now works correctly when the panel isn't on the bottom of the screen
  • More work on the desktop cube/sphere/cylinder effect
  • Right-to-left language window title fix
  • The panel no longer overlaps fullscreen windows that lose focus (Most people that use multi-monitors come across this way too often)

hackergochi

This past week I have found it hard to get anything done. my P.O.S. laptop has been powering off every 10-30 Minutes. I opened it up to see what the problem was and it seems a few thing have gone to the laptop heavens. I don’t know how the Power Button cable got into the CPU fan ( but I can guess ).

So I decided to buy my self a new laptop, I was gonna get a desktop but since I have a few engagements in the following months I will need something portable to work on.

I searched around for good Linux friendly laptops that *hopefully* wouldn’t need special drivers ( damn EEEPC :P ) I found a good one at Dell’s site and bought my self a custom XPS laptop.

Tom Albers: Mailody and Akonadi meet Nepomuk

System & Utilities

Isn't it great to have two Pilars of KDE in the subject? Anyway, this weekend I started working on Nepomuk. The end goals is simple, I want to tag my e-mails and have the possibility to enter a comment about them.

First step was trying to get some basic interaction with Nepomuk. They seem to change their API a lot, so it took some time and help from DanielW on #nepomuk-kde to get that working. Afer that I went looking for a widget that could be used for this.

I actually like the complete widget that Dolphin uses, but that's not available in KDE libs and I did not want to go throught the process of doing the move. Luckely Nepomuk provides a tiny widget which can be integrated easily and does not take to much space in Mailody. I've put it in a QDockWidget so people can put it at the bottom of the complete Mailody window if they need more space. It now looks like this:

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): weekend updates

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Thought I'd offer a few updates from the weekend, which I've taken pretty easily just because I can. =)

Applet Positioning on the Desktop

Ambroz has been working on a new QGraphicsLayout class for use in full screen containments that basically acts like an organized corral: when new widgets are added, it tries to find a place for them that doesn't overlap with other widgets and if you drag a widget out of the containment or screen by accident, it pulls it back in. It resolves several issues at once, such as being able to drag items out of the screen with the applet handle, size changes leaving widgets in outer space and being left with piles of widgets in one corner after double clicking a bunch of entries in the Add Widgets dialog.
