Chani Armitage (Chani): dear lazyweb

System & Utilities

so I guess I really do need to buy a new computer now. and on short notice, too; school starts in a couple of weeks, and I’m not sure what it would be like to not have a computer at school, but I’m pretty sure it would be a PITA, especially with half the classes having the homework online.

I was looking at a toshiba… something. the model number was in one of my notepads. u400 maybe? anyways, I want something relatively small and light, but not as small as the eee. maybe just a little bigger than my old asus m5n. obviously it has to have good linux support; intel drivers preferable. I don’t need the ability to play flashy games, but I need enough power to compile stuff, and I want kwin’s shiny compositing. having a screen that’s not completely unreadable in daylight would be nice, suspend-to-disk should work, volume/brightness/etc keys should work in linux… so, any suggestions?

I guess I’ll have to pick a distro for it, too. I’m leaning towards trying debian again; rpms ...read more...

Tobias Koenig (tokoe): Size limits for trash

System & Utilities Some weeks ago, one of our customers asked for a nice
feature that was requested 4 years ago the first time
as far as I can see from the bug tracking system.
He wanted an option to set a maximum size for the users
trash like you can do on Windows or MacOSX to avoid situations
where the trash fills 50% of your hard disc and you wonder why
you can't download emails any more ;)

As you can see in bug 79553 and 111861, there are some more
ideas how to improve the space handling of your desktop trash,
so instead of just implementing a static size limit I started
implement most of the features requested there and 3 days later
we have a nice trash space handling now.

When you right click on your trash icon on the desktop and
choose the 'Properties' entry, the appearing dialog will
offer a new tab 'Size Limits' now as shown in the screen shot
below.

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Short Tip: Bash tab completion with one tab

System & Utilities

shell.png
Tab completion is awesome. It helps to quickly call commands without typing it entirely. For example in my home directory there is the directory Downloads. If I want to change into it in a Bash-shell I simply have to enter cd Dow [tab]. After the tab-press the directory name is completed automatically. To enable this feature you have to install the appropriate package. In Feodra it is bash-completion, most distributions call the package similar.

However, sometimes there are more choices:

$ cd Do
Dokumente/ Downloads/

In that case tab has to be pressed two times to unveil the two options. To have both options already on the first tab, create the file ~/.inputrc and enter the lines

set show-all-if-ambiguous on

As usual, if you have other useful and short tips regarding Bash or the command line please let me know.

(Yes, I know about zsh’s great completion tool. Yes, I already used zsh quite some time. No, ...read more...

Sebastian Kuegler: that demo machine...

System & Utilities Wade brought me a new Mini-ITX motherboard for a demo machine we used to have in the boothbox (but which had one minor issue: No X, not even after lots of driverfoo.). So I've replaced the VIA Epia board with an Intel Atom one with integrated 945 graphics chip. KWin's compositing now works nicely on this machine, it's swift and I see no graphical glitches. The machine has a 1.6 GHz Atom CPU. One problem now is that the slot-in DVD drive doesn't fit nicely. I can squeeze it in, but as soon as I screw the cover onto the small desktop case, the DVD doesn't eject the disc anymore, caused by a slightly squeezed top of the drive. So I'll need to find a way to gain a couple of millimeters of space in that box (or stick a note under the case that you need to open the case to use optical discs ;-)). Also left to do is testing multimedia. I might need to install a couple of plugins there, and I didn't check yet if sound ...read more...

Sacha Schutz (DrIDK): a new friend!

System & Utilities

logo
Hi all ! Here is the post of a new friend (Packadal’s blog) who help me in KGLEngine’s work.

Katerpillar and KGLEngine

Hello,
A month ago, I found a very entertaining game on the net, named robokill (http://www.rocksolidarcade.com/games/robokill/).
I enjoyed this game for half an hour, and then found out you need to pay to enjoy the full campaign.
So I decided to program my own little game that no one would have to pay for. As i’m a KDE lover, i decided to make a Qt/KDE game.
After some trouble with performances, i found out that QGraphicsView and QGraphicsScene are not really what I needed to develop a game with so much sprites on screen…
So i asked on the kdegames irc channel if someone had an idea about what i should do.
One of the guys there (fela) pointed me towards DrIDK’s work with KTank and KGLEngine2d.
It suited my need much more ...read more...

Rex Dieter: akademy 2008, fedora report

System & Utilities Enough stalling already. Found a few spare moments to provide a summary report on akademy 2008 and fedora.

First day was a blast, primarily because I had a chance to finally meet in person many other fedora/kde folk, including Than, Lukas, Chitlesh, so fedora was fairly well represented. Following a similar talk, mine was last, so I was a bit nervous about overlap.

Turned out my concerns were largely unfounded, but that didn't stop me from starting out a bit nervous. Fortunately for me, I can blather on about fedora with the best, so didn't have any trouble using up the time. I kept it a little short on purpose, as I wanted to ensure ample time at the end for questions and audience-inspired topics and discussion. Sadly, no one took the bait to discuss the Cubs' chances at the World Series.

You can peruse what I have so far at
http://rdieter.fedorapeople.org/akademy2008/
Should have some video of the talk soon too, stay tuned.

On day 2, I was focused ...read more...

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): The Akademy 2008 team

System & Utilities Niels already mentioned the core team. But Akademy 2008 had a lot more volunteers and helpers

My colleagues of the EmSys group:
* Tom Tierens
* Wim Dams
* Philip Van Pelt
* Johan Van Bauwel
* Lars Struyf
* Patrick Pelgrims
and one of our students: David Nelissen.

Without them the network and computer labs would never have been up, let alone running relatively stable.

Also helping us were with catering and booth duty:
* Bart Elsen
* Jos

Rafael Fernandez Lopez (ereslibre): Toolbars are going the right way

System & Utilities

Not a new shiny feature, not a really cool new application… from my point of view a really needed bugfix. Yesterday I committed a patch that is supposed to fix all (at least, almost all) toolbars problems.

I committed it on trunk (4.2), and we have to see if it can be backported (it adds a new static to KGlobal)… but yes… they are going the right way… :)

Matt Rogers (mattr): new bugzilla

System & Utilities Face of Matt Rogers (mattr)

Ok, so Dirk surprised us all and upgraded Bugzilla to the new 3.0.5 version. There have been some growing pains associated due to the conversion. There’s more info on dirk’s blog about the reasons behind the quick conversion. All in all though, can’t say that it went too bad.

We’ll be continuing to improve things as the next couple of weeks go by, and you can always file requests on bugs.kde.org.

Over the next few days, I’ll be blogging about some of the additional features that the 3.0.5 version of bugzilla has over the ancient 2.16.1 version we were using, so stay tuned. :)

Sebastian Kuegler: Akademy Runners.

System & Utilities Browser History in KRunner On the train back home from Sint Katelijne Waver, I've got the kate session plugin working, which I wanted to have still during Akademy. I've missed that personal goal by three hours (or I pinned it down by 20 minutes, depending on how you view it). I had written part of that plugin earlier in the week and made it basically usable short before I arrived in Nijmegen. I use kate a lot, and have several sessions, as sets of documents that I'm editing often. Now I can just type the name of the session into KRunner (that ALT+F2 thing) and hit enter to open the session -- so with 5 keystrokes, I can now start hacking on plasma (and pretty much anything else I work on, it happens to be mostly plain text). The kate session runner is now in ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: Akademy 2008 ended

System & Utilities
Last Friday (15.08.2008) the Akademy 2008 officially ended. Thursday was the day of the 'Boat Trip on the rivers Dijle, Ruppel and Schelde'. It was a really nice trip with drinks, finger food and a delicious barbecue. The right event/place to discuss KDE and opensource topics with different people.

The conference was really a great event. Many interesting talks, discussions and new information. Thanks to all attendees and the organization team.

What I really missed (again) was a list of all attendees. With some of the information we filled out on registration as e.g. Name, E-mail address, IRC nickname. But also information about: how long (and on which days) a person will be at the conference, what a attendee contributes to KDE or on what he/she is working and maybe also the 'Remaining information' field if there are usefull information. All this would make it much easier to find and contact the correct people. There were so many new attendees this year that it was really hard to find what they do and if it ...read more...

Paul Adams: SVN SQL Querying

System & Utilities

So, lots of people have been asking [ade] for SVN logs. Lots of people ask me for them, too.

[ade] thought it might be a nice idea to have some form of SQL interface for KDE's logs. I couldn't agree more! Which is why I started to develop it at Akademy. Watch this space.

I will report on my other Akademy activities later.

Chani Armitage (Chani): soc week 12 / a sad end to a great akademy

System & Utilities

another monday, another country. I’m in spain right now visiiting a friend. we’re going to tear ourselves away from the computers soon, but I thought I’d write a quick blog entry first.

the rest of akademy went pretty well. wednesday there were usability talks. I got a bit of code written and was reminded of how much I hate dbus. found a nice little restaurant and had a really good meal - probably the first evening where everything went well. when we came out of the restaurant there was a concert going on. beer and music - what more can you ask for? :)

thursday was the social. I wasn’t feeling so great so I went back to bed after breakfast, then woke up in a panic thinking I would miss the boat. I ended up getting there quite early after all - I need to worry less. :) it was a great boat trip (although in retrospect wearing a dress on a windy boat was not the smartest choice) and afterwards some of went to a nearby ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Short Tip: Ignore files in svn

System & Utilities

shell.png
In my new job I’m developing software with the help of svn. There are certain files I don’t want to be managed by svn: moc files, precompiled binaries, Makefiles, etc. This can be done with the svn ignore property.

First of all you need to set up svn properly.

svn propset svn:ignore -F .cvsignore .

Next check with svn stat which files are not currently under version control and which of them you might want to ignore. Next, call the list of ignored files:

svn propedit svn:ignore .

Add the files which you would like to ignore here and close your editor. In my case the list looks like:

*moc.cpp
*moc
Makefile
Makefile.in
rc.cpp
.libs
.deps
myapp

As you see the file names don’t have to be the full name but can also contain the Asterisk *.

Ariya Hidayat: Yes, honey (or the beauty of double meaning)

System & Utilities

A sunny morning in a small coffee shop.

"Hi!"
"Hi!"
"I'd like one chai latte, please".
"OK."

The girl went on to prepare the order. After a while,

"Do you want honey or sugar?"
"Yes."
"Yes what?"
"Yes, honey."

One second passed. Then we shared a laugh.

Tom Albers: Mailody embedded in Kontact

System & Utilities

mailody-in-kontactmailody-in-kontact

Here you can see Mailody embedded in Kontact. A wish a lot of people have asked me in the past few years. So there you have it.

There still is a lot of work to do, mainly due to kontact bugs and limitation I think though:
- I've no idea how the statusbar is supposed to work in the embedded mode, so I just disabled most of it.
- I've no idea why my Mailody toolbar isn't visible in Kontact.
- I've no idea why QDockWidgets in my composer (separate QMainWindow) do not work at all or why the toolbar isn't visible.
- I've no idea why I've all those duplicates in the left bar

So, if you are interested in fixing one of those, let me know ;-) I'm happy the initial integration is there though.

Ivan Cukic: Lancelot M4 release

System & Utilities

Yes, this is the last milestone before the 1.0 release of Lancelot. This means that Lancelot now has all features the final version will have.

Configuration

The first thing you’ll notice new is a small Lancelot icon in the corner of the window

This is a door to the Lancelot’s configuration (one of the doors to be precise). When that button is activated, you get a menu with a couple of options.

The alternative to this menu is to right-click the launcher applet. It now provides access to menu’s configuration as well as its own.

I decided to keep the configuration dialogue minimal in this version since there is no need to configure mail and chat programs since only kmail and kopete are supported. And the same goes for office applications which point to OpenOffice, Gimp ...read more...

Unai Garro (uga): Photo KDE Tutorial 1-2: Curves adjust

System & Utilities

This is the second part of tutorials aimed at showing how to use KDE's photography tools (namely ShowFoto and/or Krita), to process, edit and fix your photographs. The first part of the tutorials showed how to interpret a histogram, and how to use the levels tool. This tutorial will show you how to use a more advanced tool, called the Curves Adjust tool. It's much more powerful than the levels tool but requires more patience and practise to get good results.

So lets begin. This time we have this photo, kindly donated for the tutorial by Jos van den Oever, from his akademy 2008 photos.

The problem in this photo again, is that there are parts of the image that are very dark. The two people are clear in the photo, but the background is so dark that we cannot actually see the pub's details. Let's see what happens if we try using the levels tool, as we learnt in the first tutorial:

As you can see, some parts of ...read more...

Sebastian Sauer (dipesh): ISO, when the last eagle flies...

System & Utilities

Just two days ago I was still partly optimistic in the hope the ISO would do it's job. Yesterday we got it official, they don't.

To break the own rule of consensus for things running though the fast-track process, to ignore all the provided feedback, to ignore any protest, to cloud as much of the decision-making as possible while hide-out any details or reasons leaves only one conclusion: The dying of the ISO starts...

We are enjoying interesting times and are probably allowed to see the beginning of the end of an era of something that was designed to get worldwide standards done. Something we need, we depend on so much. A "fork" of what the ISO was can be seen as opportunity for a fresh restart. The demand to have an open international organization responsible for good, vendor-neutral and usuable industry standards is valid, now even more then before. We will see if attempts like The Digital Standards Organization will succeed, if the ISO does pass things ...read more...

Wade Olson: Who’s zooming who?

System & Utilities

One thing I like about my time thusfar with KDE4.1 is looking at where it’s going.  Talking with Sebas the other night during less than 20 beers,  I was speculating:

  • Full zoom: Thanks to a compositing magnifier, you can zoom in on areas of a single window. (have)
  • Full screen: You can bring an application full size. (have)
  • Multiple application windows on one desktop: The way most people worked until recently.  Alt+tab allows various ways of cycling through multiple applications per screen. (have)
  • Multiple desktops: Plasma  now allows you to zoom out and look at your multiple desktops or “work spaces”, which may be a somewhat identical defition now, but not necessarily in the future.  (new)
  • Multiple computing resources: Either other computers in your LAN/workgroup or distributed resources such as VNC/RDP/FreeNX.  Ideally we would either have a grid to alt_tab through, just like with application windows, or potentially a LAN/workgroup mapping showing the connections (like a systems engineering doc).   Would virtualized machines go here? (predict)
  • WAN/network level: What are the major networks that you ...read more...

Bart Coppens (BCoppens): Akademy 2008: Album with pictures

System & Utilities

After a lot of deliberating this, I decided to put online an album with a lot of the pictures I took at Akademy. Since most people at (big) conferences and community gatherings like it when they can have some form of memento (including me!) of themselves and the event, I think this outweighs the (very few) people who didn't seem to like their picture being taken. Especially since most of the people actually tried posing in different positions when I came near them with my camera, which I think means obviously that they would want to see themselves afterwards Sticking out tongue

To the best of my abilities of remembering those who did not like pictures being taken, I have not put online the pictures of those people, neither have I uploaded the pictures of somewhat embarrassing nature (like people sleeping during the presentations Eye-wink). I've also not uploaded the worst out-of-focus ones, blurry ones, moved ones, etc. This brings me to a total of 685 pictures currently ...read more...

The story is rather simple: we arrived in Amersfoort (where I live), and after dropping of Jos van den Ooever at the trainstation I wanted to show Kenny a bit of the center of the city. Now the center isn't very car-friendly, but we managed to find a little street which did show some promise. So we went in there - and suddenly full stop... We were out for a few seconds, then came by, saw flames coming out the front of the car. I had an airbag in my face, and generally felt like shit.

After we got out of the burning car and the police & firebrigade came, we figured we apparently went into a street which was 'guarded' by a rising bollard. Roland Wolters (liquidat): Howto: Find matches for udev rules

System & Utilities

Tux
Recently I bought a new keyboard and wondered if I can trigger actions via udev when the keyboard is plugged in. For that, however, it must be known how to create udev rules matching the keyboard in the first place.

To write udev rules the most important part is to match the device you want to handle with the rules. While hardware fixed in the computer might be easy, the rest usually isn’t. For example, you can trigger something when keyboard xyz of manufacturer abc is plugged in - but for that you must now where to find which information and how to present them to udev.

This can be done with the program udevmonitor. It informs you of newly plugged in hardware detected by udev:

# udevmonitor
...
UEVENT[1217720129.155386] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1 (usb)
UEVENT[1217720129.155440] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.9_ep00 (usb_endpoint)
UEVENT[1217720129.157973] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1/5-1:1.0 (usb)
UDEV [1217720129.166782] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb5/5-1 (usb)
UDEV [1217720129.171948] add /class/usb_endpoint/usbdev5.9_ep00 (usb_endpoint)
...

The next step is to use ...read more...
