Richard Johnson: Docunification

System & Utilities

As a member of both the Ubuntu Documentation Project and the KDE Documentation Project, one thing is clear, our current state of system help isn’t the greatest. An initiative that the GNOME project has looked at taking on (for the greater part of the past 3 years) is called Project Mallard. There are some things in this project that I like and dislike, however one thing is clear, they understand the inefficiency of their current system and know it needs to be fixed. KDE is realizing this same exact thing and know we need to fix it, but figuring out how to do so correctly, isn’t the easiest thing.

One thing that GNOME, KDE, and others have worked hard to do is collaborate with Freedesktop.org specifications on many levels. Maybe it is time we look at continuing this excellence, but this time add documentation to the menu. How many of you GNOME users love using Amarok or another KDE application, but hate the fact that KHelpCenter is installed just so you can view the ...read more...

Simon Edwards: Development version 1.1 of Guidedog is available

System & Utilities

Just a small announcement. Development version 1.1 of my little network routing configuration utility is up on my website for your testing pleasure. There is no new functionality. I've just ported it from KDE 3 and C++ to KDE4 and Python, saving it from ravages of bit-rot. It's a neat little utility and it would be a shame to let it get lost on the migration to KDE 4. It is also in Python now which should make the code a lot more accessible for contributors. If you've written a few shell scripts in the past, then your skills a probably high enough to hack on Guidedog and fix any bugs which show up.

My attention is spread across too many projects these days which slows down fixes and applying patches. So I've now put the guidedog source in KDE's subversion repository in the playground/network section. (/trunk/playground/network/guidedog/) This will hopefully take me out of the critical path for fixes and patches.

I've also got a mostly done port of Guarddog to KDE 4 and ...read more...

Fred Emmott (fred87): mprisshell

System & Utilities Face of Fred Emmott (fred87)

I've written a small bash CLI interface to MPRIS players, available at http://files.fredemmott.co.uk/mprisshell.sh.

It's currently rather limited in functionality:

Usage: mprisshell.sh [command]
Commands:
play Start playing the current track
pause Pause the current track
playpause If a track is playing, pause it; otherwise, play the current track
next Skip to the next track
previous Skip to the previous track
incVolume [percentage] Increase the volume by 10%, or the given percentage
decVolume [percentage] Decrease the volume by 10%, or the given percentage

It sends the above commands to the first MPRIS-capable player found; this includes the latest git head of YANIHP, Amarok 2, Audacious, and others. It's meant for normal users, not developers, for example as a program to bind to media keys.

Qt painting is SLOW on N810

Lorn Potter: Qt 4 on maemo

System & Utilities

I love Qt, which is one reason I work for Trolltech^WQtsoftware in Nokia. and thanks to the efforts of the qt4 on maemo project Maemo Qt4, there is yet another platform/device open to any application that is created with Qt4.

gutenbrowser on maemo

Here is my old-yet-updated Gutenbrowser project on Maemo on n810. (the copyright on gutenbrowser is 1998-2008! now). I don’t work on it as much as it needs. Especially now with rug rats and yard apes about.

All it took was a recompile!

Just install the scratchbox sdk for maemo. Grab the qt4 for Maemo sources, compile, install them, and your good to go! hmmm… what’s next?

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): Between Akademy and Feature Freeze

System & Utilities Face of Jonathan Riddell (riddell)

Akademy finished, it was great.

Next week is feature freeze in Ubuntu land, so we are working hard on filling the distros with the necessary features, if not always beastie-free.

We got a new Adept in thanks to the excellent mornfall, so now people can install and upgrade and manage their packages again. Some bits were missing though so I implemented an equivalent of adept_batch for installing packages from a command line with a GUI (used by Amarok's codec installer for example).

I also implemented a notifier to tell you when there are updates

This includes a feature called upgrade hooks used when package updates have actions which should happen after the update.

It also keeps an eye on Apport, the Ubuntu crash handler. Today I turned off drkonqi in KDE apps in favour of Apport as an experiment with our Bugs team to see if they can handle forwarding bugs upstream as necessary. ...read more...

Adam Treat (manyoso): Qt painting is SLOW on N810

System & Utilities Face of Adam Treat (manyoso)

With all the recent interest in Nokia's N810 device among KDE and Qt developers I think it is important to note that Qt/X11 painting performance is badly broken when running under Hildon. I've been porting a QtWebKit based browser to the N810 for awhile now and have noticed a steep drop in performance when compared to the same browser running under Qtopia Phone Edition on the very same device.

Specifically, Xrender performance on the N810 (at least the codepaths that Qt uses) is incredibly slow. What's more, using CPU based raster image is also very slow because of the overhead of blitting the QImage to the screen under X11. Inspired by Zack's recent post I thought it would be a good idea to quantify just how bad the problem is. With a little modification to disable the GL option, I ran Zack's qgears2 program on the N810.

Here are ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: How to activate your HP UMTS card

System & Utilities
After starting last week (only) one time Windows on my HP Compaq 2710p the internal UMTS card (HP HS2300 HSDPA Broadband Wireless module) stopped working under Linux again. And as Seife already pointed out: there is no way to activate the card from Linux (at least with kernel version 2.6.26) or the bios. I found today some time to search for a solution since several people asked me how to reactivate the card and since there are also bugreports with this problem.

Seife gave me the hint that may the hp-wmi kernel module, which will be part of 2.6.27, could provide a way to enable/disable the card. And it does. Currently the module don't get loaded automatically, you have to load it manually (modprobe hp-wmi). As soon as you load the module the UMTS card gets enabled, also if deactivated under windows before. Since the module handle the card as WWAN I assume also CDMA cards from HP would be handled the same way.

With hp-wmi the killswitch now enable/disable the WLAN, Bluetooth and the ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Pesky Effects

System & Utilities Thiago's rant made me look into the graphics drivers issues a bit more. Since I run on a different platform -- x86 Solaris with proprietary nvidia drivers v. 169.11 -- I was wondering if similar things were happening there. It took some fiddling to find out how to enable desktop effects at all on Solaris. Mark W. finally came up with
nvidia-xconfig --composite --damage-events --render-accel --allow-glx-with-composite --add-argb-glx-visuals
after which it's possible to enable effects in KWin's systemsettings panel. So far so good, and the resulting effects really do look good. They add something to the user experience. I've gone for a slight dimming of inactive windows, medium translucency of inactive windows -- I'm a focus-follows-mouse guy -- and the cover switch alt-tab manager. I played with wobbly windows and explode and that kid of stuff for a bit, but it's not really useful to me.

Based on Thiago's comments on performance, I took a look and can confirm his 30% (60% of a single core) CPU use, dropping to less than 1% without the glib integration. ...read more...

Thiago Macieira (thiago): Rant: Desktop effects? Never more.

System & Utilities

Disclaimer: this is a rant. I have been trying for the past few days to make desktop effects work and not use 90% of my CPU. I am frustrated, so this blog will step on people’s toes. Maybe you shouldn’t read it.

I remember when I was using KDE 3 and I enabled the desktop effects. The only objective of that was to have semi-transparent windows: I had just got a collection of nice wallpaper pictures, but what’s the use if you never see the desktop? So I turned the feature on, and it worked — more or less. There was a nice feature which you could set the transparency level differently for active and inactive windows, but once you clicked the Windows Operations menu (Alt+F3, the application icon in the top-left corner), the transparency level would become stuck for that window. To make matters worse, there was this one application that, if moved, would become 100% transparent. I had to be careful to change the level just after starting it, before doing anything in it.

But that wasn’t too ...read more...

Artur Souza (MoRpHeUz): Plasmoid with QEdje

System & Utilities

Akademy was really great! It was awesome to give faces to nicknames and to chat, have dinner, learn and talk with a lot of people…just awesome!

My first plasmoid is done, right now. It took some time to take care about details and I had to wait before we could publish the last QEdje’s version. Unfortunately, our server is going down for maintenance this weekend but you can get the snapshots in this post. After the servers go online on Monday, we’ll also put our git repository online (actually it’s already there).

It’s a simple plasmoid and it took more time to create the animation frames (using blender…) than to code the plasmoid. Thanks to ervin and darktears who helped me with little doubts ;-)

Required downloads: QEdje 0.2 , QZion 0.2 , EET , KDE logo Edje File. I put the KDE logo here because it doesn’t fit well inside the svn. If you want to compile your own themes, you’ll need ...read more...

Bram Schoenmakers: Thank you Matt and Dirk

System & Utilities

I want to thank Matt Rogers for his work in the past year to migrate Bugzilla from 2.something to 3.0.5, and also Dirk Mueller for his work in the past week to bring the new Bugzilla into shape. I don't know if there were other people working on it in the background, I would feel sorry if I left someone out.

It takes some time to get used to 3.0.5, because I could locate most links and features with my eyes closed in the old Bugzilla Smile . But I'm really glad with the new version and hope that we can bring bug triage to a new level with it.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): Microsoft and Novell reaffirm pact.

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Microsoft has dropped another ton or three of cash on Novell and in celebration they issued a joint press release announcing this new phase of their relationship. I was never a fan of the original deal, feeling that it violated the spirit if not the letter of the GPL. Some purport that it has increased the usage of Linux in the enterprise; that's a claim for which I don't have the numbers to verify or debunk. Honestly, I sort of doubt much of anyone really does.

Now, I'm a happy OpenSuse user (loving zypper in 11, btw), and I'm very happy to see F/OSS friendly companies succeed .. but I'm not exactly rushing out to recommend Novell to everyone I know mostly because of my personal uncertainty around this whole deal. I doubt anyone at Novell particularly cares about me and my quietude, of course. =)

So I read this latest announcement, thought about the implications of it and then moved on .. until I was spammed ...read more...

System & Utilities

so now I’m in ireland, whee. my sister picked me up from the airport tuesday night, and spent three hours driving me back to her house. I was sleeping before we even got there. then I got woken up at 7:30am by my nephew shoving books in my face. :P
I shouldn’t spend too much more time blogging; we need to go out and buy food. good news is that she has a nokia phone, and her charger fits my n810, so I can use it again. yay! pete’s also got a nokia phone, so I might be able to use his charger when I finally get home and not need to buy one at all :) I’m considering buying the usb charger, since it’s nice and small, but it’s fscking $40! damn you nokia and your weird nonstandard gadgets. :P I suppose that is a small fraction of the cost of this nice free n810 :) but it’s gotta suck for the people who *bought* n810’s.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): associating widgets with mimetypes

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)One of the neat features in Plasma is the ability to associated widgets with mimetypes. To associate a widget with a mimetype, you add a X-Plasma-DropMimeTypes key to the .desktop file for the widget.

For instance, the picture frame widget has this in its .desktop file:

X-Plasma-DropMimeTypes=image/jpeg,image/png

When I drop an image file onto the desktop, I get asked if I'd like to make a picture frame or an icon out of it. In 4.2, I can also drop raw image data onto the desktop and it does the same (except it doesn't give the option to create an icon for it as it isn't actually a file).

The way this works is that Plasma::Containment queries the widgets to see which, if any, supports the mimetype(s) in the drag object. It's smart enough to follow the mimetype priority if there is more than one type offered in the drag, so html content will be dropped as html content and not plain text. On my 4.2 ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): folderview containment with wallpaper

System & Utilities Face of Aaron Seigo (aseigo)Below is a screenshot showing folderview as a containment with a wallpaper:

There are still a couple things missing: icon position persistence (so the position when dragging an icon to an area of the screen gets saved/restored between starts of plasma), and obvious way to get at the configuration UI and toolbox actions. (Update: just fixed the toolbox actions.)

Switching to folderview is done via the desktop settings dialog with a combobox right under the Desktop Theme selection. Easy peasy.

Jason Stubb's new systray applet also supports hiding icons; we just need an expand button to give access to the hidden icons. I'm pondering whether the hidden icons should appear in a popup or expand the widget in the panel .. hum hum .. Beyond that, the new systray supports much nicer painting of the icons and specialization of the icons letting us transition to a new spec on X11 that doesn't suck ass by mixing new and old style ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Olympics and other fun stuff

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So I was excited to see my people behind KDE interview get posted the other day, especially since the comments were much more positive than I was expecting. blauzahl did a good job on the interview, I’d like to thank her and Danny Allen for taking the time to work on it. It was hard for me just to handle the Q&A session so I don’t want to think of how much work they put in!

Akademy 2008 is over and it’s kind of bittersweet for me, as I hear it was the best Akademy in the last couple of years and I wasn’t able to attend. I am glad that everyone found it such an enjoyable time though, I will hopefully be able to show up for one some day.

System & Utilities

came back from akademy saturday by plane together with Ruphy, WindowsUninstall and Andjam, all gone smooth, unlike other people, sorry guys :( apart from the fact i now have a spectacular cold (probably weather nicer than the belgian one was a too big shock :))

don't know what to say about it in particular, apart that KDE people are really amazing, especially those people have done a really crazy job, there was a sense of world domination really fantastic, it makes feel that is actually possible (hmm, maybe not world domination, but at least market domination yeah:).

Now at home, have a couple of patches still in the laptop that should really be polished/committed or mercilessy thrown away (/me laaazy)

Most important i should really do my thesis, and i'm trying really hard to do it (now i'm in the phase of making old terrible code to look good ohyeah, funny as eating a bunch of nails:)

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): License Compliance Engineering

System & Utilities Sometimes, I care about software licenses. Not every day, but enough to sometimes run the Krazy license checker over our codebase, just to find out what could or should still be licensed more officially. I don't believe there are any real licensing issues in kdelibs, for instance, but there are a few files where the header isn't quite in the shape that we'd like it to be. For instance, missing email addresses of contributors make it very difficult to contact authors if that should be needed. Everything is implicitly licensed in an LGPL v2 or LGPL v3 compatible fashion, but it's good to have that written out in full.

Sometimes I even think about license compliance. That's Armijn's fault (you may have met him at Akademy this year at the USB plugfest or the UPnP BoF) and I do enjoy exploring -- as a mathematician -- the limits of the words set out in licenses. What does section 3c of the GPLv2 mean, exactly? It's an interesting exercise.

Chani Armitage (Chani): dear lazyweb

System & Utilities

so I guess I really do need to buy a new computer now. and on short notice, too; school starts in a couple of weeks, and I’m not sure what it would be like to not have a computer at school, but I’m pretty sure it would be a PITA, especially with half the classes having the homework online.

I was looking at a toshiba… something. the model number was in one of my notepads. u400 maybe? anyways, I want something relatively small and light, but not as small as the eee. maybe just a little bigger than my old asus m5n. obviously it has to have good linux support; intel drivers preferable. Tobias Koenig (tokoe): Size limits for trash

System & Utilities Some weeks ago, one of our customers asked for a nice
feature that was requested 4 years ago the first time
as far as I can see from the bug tracking system.

ideas how to improve the space handling of your desktop trash,
so instead of just implementing a static size limit I started
implement most of the features requested there and 3 days later
we have a nice trash space handling now.

When you right click on your trash icon on the desktop and
choose the 'Properties' entry, the appearing dialog will
offer a new tab 'Size Limits' now as shown in the screen shot
below.
