System & Utilities

Warning, the following text might be exagarated and over-simplifying matters, some might call it a rant.

Used the new desktop now for a few days for my FOSS work and I still have that feeling around. KDE4 simply feels slow, I can’t really pin-point it to something specific - if I could I’d write bugreports. I just have the gut-feeling that with a fresh new, state-of-the-art laptop my desktop should be a lot quicker.

Konqueror is worst of all apps I’ve used thus far, scrolling with cursor keys I can actually see the repainting happen - while opening a new tab seems to be a lot faster than in kde 3.5. Rendering in general also feel slow. Kate is another example of an application, that seems to be doing something extra which it shouldn’t. When typing quickly the response on screen often is a few msecs late and as a human you quickly notice such things.

I really expect a new machine, with state-of-the-art, but not super-fast intel integrated graphics, a SATA disk and a dual core 2.2GHz ...read more...

Dario Freddi (drf__): Sharing some PowerDevil love, and some dinosaurs too

System & Utilities

So, I’m back blogging, mainly thanks to the fact that my previous post has received an impressive feedback (which I didn’t expect, thanks!). So, first of all I wanted to say I’ve already implemented in PowerDevil some of your suggestions (first of all, the possibility of running a script upon profile loading), though I have some more news for you.

I have radically changed the polling system. It is now modular and selectable by the user. This because fredrich pointed me to a nice XSync feature that allowed real idle counter support without polling and/or hacks, and I really wanted to implement it. By now, you can choose in the configuration dialog to use this new XSync based method (that still needs serious testing), or the old, solid, widget grabber method.

This is not the only important news: PowerDevil has just been moved in kdebase/workspace. You probably wonder “oh no, what can I do now for using it on my 4.1 installation?”. But you just don’t have to worry, because I’ve created a tag (thanks toma) for PowerDevil, ...read more...

Jes Hall (canllaith): Password Management with KeePassX

System & Utilities Face of Jes Hall (canllaith)

Working with as many systems as I do, I have to keep track of a pretty huge number of user accounts and passwords across many diverse environments. For a long time I used a GPG encrypted text file to store this information, but recently I went looking for a more structured solution. I found KeePassX, and promptly fell in love.

KeePassX is a password management application for Linux and OSX. It supports the same database format as KeePass Password Safe for Windows, providing a cross-platform solution for managing passwords securely. It’s database is protected using either AES or Twofish encryption with a 256 bit key, which provides adequate encryption for the majority of users.

The interface is extremely simple. Select ‘File -> New Database’, and then enter a password or passphrase. KeePassX has the option to also use a key file for authentication - allowing you to place a key on a USB stick to add a physical authentication token to your password ...read more...

Riccardo Iaconelli: on the community, the batteries, and on some really old dinosaur

System & Utilities

so, today’s blog entry is presented in fuzzy vision, for solidarity to drunk people.

Yesterday I was feeling pretty pissed off by how things were going. But fortunately, the KDE community demostrated once more how great and friendly it is. =) I received a lot of virtual hugs and good words on IRC, on private mail and in comments. And I’m really thankful to everyone of you for the kind words, they really helped me. =)
Sebastian turns out to be our most favourite teddy bear ever, and today, despite he woke up at 5 AM and was just back from a long journey, popped up on IRC and pinged me, we explained ourselves, and in a few minutes the atmosphere and everything was back to the usual KDE hugs and kisses. Misunderstandings are pretty bad, but fortunately now all seems good. Or, as sebas writes… I love teddy bears! =)

So, today I finished my mockup for the battery, and sent it to the Plasma devel mailing list. I’ll show it also here, so that ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): new laptop!

System & Utilities

whee! :) I got home friday afternoon and my laptop was here waiting for me. it’s a dell xps m1330, and so far I’m fairly happy with it. I installed arch on it last night, and now I begin the long process of installing software and tweaking settings and so on… :)

the hardware is almost all intel. the screen brightness fn-keys work even from a terminal, and the bios lets me choose default levels for AC and battery. there are two audio-out jacks as well as mic in at the front; I assume one of the two is better quality, but they sound the same to me. there are only two usb ports, but they’re on either side of the laptop so at least I can still choose what side to put things on. there’s a capslock led. there’s a slot-load dvd drive (why don’t all laptops have that?) and a fingerprint reader (maybe I’ll try to get that working sometime) and a webcam and it’s shiny. :)

the keyboard is standard size, unfortunately, which means it’s ...read more...

Ivan Cukic: Lancelot 1.0.3, media coverage

System & Utilities

Well, we are going to reach the final step in the evolution of Lancelot for KDE 4.1 very soon. Will it be called 1.1 or something else, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is the fact that Lancelot is more stable than ever, and even has a new feature.

Changelog since 1.0

  • Feature update: “Reset the [application] browser to show Favourites on menu open” option, which is the default behaviour from now on.
  • Installation fixed. Thanks to the bug or whatever in the new cmake 2.6, there were problems installing Lancelot - no binaries were installed in most cases. It even got a /quick fix/ in the FAQ section of the L’s website. Now, that is a thing of the past thanks to the Than Ngo who sent me a patch that mysteriously and miraculously fixes this problem.
  • Crashes… no more. The 1.0 was stable enough in my opinion, so most of you haven’t had any problems with it. But then, there are those of you who were less fortunate. And those of you who had the 1.0.1 installed ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): We are out of Mythos

System & Utilities Well, it's been a week where I lost my wallet, hacked too much Java, learned some things about SQL associations, ate squid and watched a Swedish swimware company meeting; it's been a good SQO-OSS week. It's soon time to fly back to Amsterdam, and when I get there I'll update the public-facing Alitheia installation for KDE, because it's gotten a lot better. And best of all, KDE4 on Solaris has been really stable all week, with only an isolated Konqueror crash due to KJS things. So Greece has done us good.

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): konqueror web shortcut for gentoo packages

System & Utilities

You’re going to think that I’m some kind of web shortcut maniac, but I really think I’m not.

I’m using http://packages.larrythecow.org a lot, and only today did I think about creating a konqueror web shortcut to get there faster. I’ve called it ‘gt’ (for gentoo, yes, i’m that lazy), and the magic url thinguy is

http://packages.larrythecow.org/?v=search&s={@}

Now I can type “gt:kdebase-meta” in konquy or alt-f2 and feel ashamed in front of my debian friends whom I’ve been laughing at so much in the past because debian is so slow to catch up with kde releases.

Today, several weeks after KDE 4.1 has been released, and 10 days after KDE 4.1.1 has been released, there is still no official ebuilds for the kde 4.1 branch. I know there are overlays, there are some heated bug-reports, blogs and even some unofficial status page about it, but still, kde 4.1 is not in gentoo, and it makes me feel really sad.

Yes, I know, it’s free software and I can do it myself. And then?

Kushal Das: tv.dgplug.org changed for good

System & Utilities

I started tv.dgplug.org a year back when I first saw http://screencasters.heathenx.org/ for inkscape tutorials. In the last one year I tried to maintain it by hand written htmls (desgin was done by nomind). But found it too difficult to maintain, also people were asking for rss feeds.

Also I had to provide .flv files so that people can watch the videos online. Again maintaining files in two different format was painful and .flv is not a free format.

Finally I decided to move to wordpress and only ogg files will be provided from now on.

Dario Freddi (drf__): Introducing the darkest power of PowerDevil

System & Utilities

Scary, huh? On a side note, hello Planet, this is my first post that will actually get syndacated. I excuse for giving you updates on what I work on just now, though I’m really dumb about RSS feeds, so credits to Riddell for 1) adding me to the planet 2) showing me how to filter RSS by categories :

Anyway, some of you might know what PowerDevil is, some might not; well, for you who fear this is yet another attempt of threatening your lives, PowerDevil is a power manager for KDE4, and it won’t kill you. Credits to sandsmark for this beautiful name :D

Being serious for a moment, PowerDevil takes a pretty different approach than all other KDE-based powermanagers until now. PowerDevil is lightweight, and I mean for real, and it’s fully integrated in your KDE Desktop. This is because PowerDevil it’s not the usual application you see in the tray, but just a KDED module, aka a daemon. Right, everything happens in background and you don’t have to care. And, ...read more...

Lucas Murray (Zarin): Changing existing Git authors

System & Utilities

When importing a Subversion repository into Git with git-svn, if you want Git to use the commit author's name and E-mail instead of Subversion username you are required to create a file (Called the "authors file" in the git-svn manual) with the author's details. This is all good for the most part, except you are required to enter details for everyone that has made a commit and for a large public project that can be quite a few people. To make matters worse Subversion doesn't store that information itself, so you are required to find it elsewhere.

Luckily Git provides some services that allow you to change commits in a live repository fairly easily. Below is a small script I wrote that allows you to change only the details of a few select commit authors from a Subversion import, leaving all others as their old usernames. The file that stores the author details is compatible with the git-svn authors file.

Warning: Running this script on a public repository will cause it to become incompatible ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): PlayStation 3

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

My wife bought me a PS3 as an early Christmas present (and so I could possibly bring it on the boat for the next underway).

So far though the experience has been underwhelming. The on screen keyboard is annoying to use, even accounting for the fact that it uses a controller. It at least uses the normal QWERTY layout instead of just putting the letters in order but you have to select that mode manually, otherwise it gives you 10 digits as if I was trying to send a text message to someone. What’s next, limiting games to 320×240 resolution because people have PSPs and DS? I don’t see why they intentionally limit the number of input buttons just because that’s what people have to deal with on a cell phone.

Eventually I got the internet access to work, at which time it needed an update. After about seriously 20 minutes of downloading over a cable modem it finally was able to start the 5 minute process of actually ...read more...

Andreas Pakulat: apaku

System & Utilities

So, after receiving my new laptop and reading Ruud’s Blog post (seems like planetkde somehow lost it, anybody knows what happened?) I’ve decided to install only KDE4 on it. Partly because I won’t use the linux installation that much and partly because its new hardware thats capable of using all the new bling - yes I like bling sometimes.

As always building trunk was no problem at all - thanks to kdesvn-build. Most of the time was spent to find the needed/optional dependencies and install them.

Altogether it seems KDE4 is going its way, there have certainly been quite some improvements, despite all the nay-sayers. OTOH I’m still missing the kde3-way of switching windows with kwin, particularly the border around the window thats selected in the list. I doubt I’ll have the time to that myself. Also I just noticed that konsole doesn’t have any menu accelerators and one can’t activate the menu via alt (going to file a bugreport later). I also think it has far too many shortcuts set by ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): SQO-OSS Day 4

System & Utilities Towards the end of the week, the pace of a sprint slows down. I spent some time chewing on race conditions -- it's really nice to have some sharp analytical minds from KDAB available then, but even they are dulled after sunshine and beer -- and finally spotted the actual problem: using the wrong database table entirely. Dull like a wax spoon, that is.

Anyway, progress has been really good. For some things that Paul has been blogging about like the Mean Developer Engagement we're over the first hurdles (parallelism, synchronization, database structure) and now working on implementing this in Alitheia. That means that we'll be able to get fully automated green blob diagrams and MDE graphs, for instance. That might make them more boring, but at the same time you may be able to track the activity of a project and notice disruptions in the personal involvement of people more easily.

Tomorrow's plan is "sit in a meeting all day" but I really hope to still get some more hacking in. Adjusting a ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Adventures

System & Utilities Face of Michael Pyne (mpyne)

So the recent Hurricane Hanna that passed by forced our ship to get underway last week and I got to spend almost a week deployed. Yay. I’m back for now but we’ve been super-busy since then trying to make up for lost time.

I managed to find time to go ahead and move the asciiquarium screensaver into kdeartwork, which should be a part of KDE 4.2.

KDE trunk is looking better and better with each passing day which is nice. I’m tempted to run out and buy an ATI card at this point if only for the better hardware support in Linux. It seems that everytime I build a computer I inadvertently pick the worst-supported graphics card somehow. :-/

Anyways, I’m too tired to remember what else I was going to post so I’m just going to go to bed. :P
