Aaron Seigo (aseigo): slides and a cast

System & Utilities Working on a set of presentations for a corporate project, Sebastian and I put together some content covering KDE and Plasma topics over the weekend. We thought it would be cool to share some of the results with you. Note that the slides are not designed for use at a conference (too much text and rather brief) but rather as an aide to introducing technical management type people to some of the key concepts.

I should probably upload the screencast to Youtube.com so that people can find it there as well. There is also no cheesy outro music or many highly technical details as my screencasts often have because it was meant for a management meeting. I did manage to throw one or two "inside jokes" in, such as the clock reference, but it's all pretty staid and maybe even a bit boring. Hopefully, however, it's useful.

You can at least get a glance ...read more...

Germain Garand: Rendering Engines Benchmark

System & Utilities

Ever since Maksim Orlovich released benchmarks of its excellent FrostByte flavour of the KJS engine, I've been curious to perform a synthetic benchmark of KHTML/KJS, to see what our whole stack is up to.

There would indeed be little point in having a smoking fast JavaScript engine if performance was going to fall apart at the next link of the chain, such as in DOM tree manipulation or Rendering, wouldn't it?

Well, what better time for conducting tests than now, at the eve of the KDE 4.1.2 release, where new generation browsers are stable and some new contenders want to enter the field...

I will therefore present results for the following engines/browsers :

  • KHTML/KJS on Konqueror 4.1.2
  • Presto/Futhark on Opera 9.52
  • Gecko/SpiderMonkey on Firefox 3.0.1
  • WebCore/V8 on Chrome 0.2.149.27(beta)/wine 1.1.4
  • QWebkit on Qt 4.4's Demo Browser

As for the tests themselves, I did not want to bias this benchmark by crafting them specially, so I decided to use the readily available synthetic performance test suite, consisting of a patchwork of external tests, ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Talk about synchronicity...

System & Utilities

Last week's big debate was (again) whether Phonon is a Good Thing or not. And coincidentally, one of my tasks last week was to implement sound notifications in the cross-platform Qt4-based chat application we're building at Hyves. Qt4, so the first thing I reached for was Phonon.

I had looked at phonon before, but that was in a failed attempt to make a phonon video flake shape for koffice. Failed, because I couldn't find a good way to make phonon output video data something that isn't a real widget. That may well have been solved now with widgets-on-canvas for something like QGraphicsView, but whether that solution is portable to flake, I'm not sure yet.

But last week was the first time I tried to use the Phonon api myself: and really, it is a wonderfully easy to understand api. I didn't have to do much coding at all. It was more of a problem to actually get Qt compiled with phonon on all three platforms, and the biggest problem was that the macdeployqt tool bundled with Qt doesn't deploy the ...read more...

Sune Vuorela (pusling): KDE and internal storage

System & Utilities

Looking at KDE4 and related technologies, a few things about data storage hit me. Not that I know anything about it, but that does usually not prevent me from trying to be clever about it.

Several parts needs to either index, cache or store data.

Apps

  • Strigi indexes your harddisk, just a index. No real data
  • Akonadi caches your data, especially email/contacts/calendar items, but also in the future probably instant messaging logs, notes and others
  • Nepomuk handles and stores tags on files and other data
  • Amarok indexes your music collection and stores related info, including statistics

Among these, there is probably many other, but these I just noticed.

How do these apps store their things

As the smart reader has guessed, all these uses different storage methods.

Strigi

Indexes your data and store it in a clucene on disk format. If you remove your strigi indexes, all you lose is the cpu time used to generate it.
Strigi is not a KDE thing, but the KDE libraries depends on it.

Akonadi

Caches your PIM data and make ...read more...

Holger Freyther (zecke): Flying back to Taipei

System & Utilities Yesterday I spend most my day with watching videos that featured Alan Kay. These included videos about Squeak, Seaside, Croquet, demos of old (1977!) 3d, fully anti-aliased, zooming interfaces of the MIT. This was concluded with reading about self and PEP. When watching these kind of things I wonder why the computing world as it is today and why all these things have not made it into mainstream computing yet.

I will soon enter a train to Frankfurt, will arrive early at the airport, board an airplane and will be back in Taipei for a couple of days. Anyone interested in talking about WebKit, Smalltalk or other things please go ahead and give me a call.

Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Maemo Summit and Desktop Search Hackfest (part 1)

System & Utilities

The first Maemo Summit was held in Berlin on the 19th and 20th of September. Nokia proposed to organise a "Desktop Search Hackfest" in collaboration with the GNOME foundation. This proposal was forwarded to all the participants in the discussions on a set of common standards for desktop search called Xesam. The list of attendees was very interesting and I had the impression that it would be hard to get the same group of people together soon. So I decided to skip a family day at my employer, PANalytical, and went to the hackfest.

On the way to Berlin, which is a single train from Hengelo, I joined Ben van Klinken, the author the the excellent CLucene library. He brought his girlfriend, Femke, and she brought a book, which was a very sensible idea. Ben and I talked nothing but indexes all the way to Berlin. Discussing ideas and browsing code in the dining car is an excellent way to travel.

The summit was held at C-base a non-for-profit for computer and network enthusiasts that is housed ...read more...

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): Duplicate Blog Enties; Beta coming up

System & Utilities

The all new Planet KDE is going well. One hickup was that blog entries would duplicate themselves in RSS readers when anyone edited their post. I've fixed that now by changing to using the URL to the entry as the ID in the RSS feed (before it was using a hash). So you may well get duplicates of everything today with the change to the new scheme, but not after that.

Koos Vriezen: Maemo summit 2008

System & Utilities

So I went to the Berlin summit this year. I might not have come if it wasn’t for for bunanson bringing my little project at a more popular level.

It was really nice to meet him in person (left on the picture, as a big thanks I bought him a german weizen beer). He also did a presentation, presenting his worldtv99 playlist.

Anyhow, the visit was really great and interesting. Mobile computing is an exciting area and, thanks to the Nokia internet tables, Moblin, Android and what not, opening up for open source.
Nokia employees presented the roadmap of their internettablet. Some insight talks about UI design. With years of experience with small form factor devices and their Symbian OS, definitely a good learning experience.
So the next device will include OpenGL-ES and on top Clutter for eye appealing applications. From what I recall, the destop will be Clutter based. Applications remain Gtk based. They’re pushing Gtk ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Debate time

System & Utilities

Why are you taking notes on the debate? I thought you already mailed in your vote.

This was a quote from my wife a few hours ago as the Presidential debate was getting started. She was right of course in that it wouldn’t affect my vote. I did jot notes down for the first hour or so just so I’d be able to remember the debate later should discussion ever come up. :-)

Anyways I expected better from Obama and worse from McCain. I still think Obama won but he at least at first seemed to have trouble collection his thoughts at times. I’m quite pissed at McCain trying to say that the only way for the deaths of American servicemembers in Iraq to have meaning is to “win” the war as it discounts the very real effort of many of those servicemembers. The Navy Times had an article the other day describing a Marine put up for a Medal of Honor because he died jumping on a grenade to save nearby Marines. He may not have ...read more...

Aurelien Gateau: Red Eye Reduction

System & Utilities

A feature I wanted to add for a long time to Gwenview has just landed in SVN:
red eye reduction.

It’s (hopefully) simple to use. I made a screencast to demonstrate it:

Download original video.

The UI is quite inspired from iPhoto, I reused the widget style you can find in
the fullscreen bar.

The current algorithm is a modified version of a Paint.net plugin. As you can see in the screencast, it does not try to be smart: you need to point the eyes yourself. Nevertheless, it does a good job at fixing the pupil color while keeping the iris untouched.

Andreas Pakulat: KDevelop unit-tests run regularly

System & Utilities

So we’re living in the year 2008 and test-driven development has reached open source communities since some time now. KDE4, especially kdelibs comes with quite a bunch of unit-tests (though still to few I guess, at least for some parts) which gives us a kind of “we’re safe” feeling.

Unfortunately that feeling is treacherous. Because writing unit-tests is only 33% of the whole thing, the other 66% are running them regurlarly and publishing the results of running. A million unit-tests don’t help anybody if they’re not run and thus nobody catches the introduced regressions early on. Ideally running unit-tests would be a pre-commit-thing, but unfortunately due to the size of our code-base thats not feasible. Also you’d need to run all of them, because a little change in kdecore might trigger a bug in kdeui which you wouldn’t see if you ran only kdecore unit-tests.

So far kdelibs unit-tests aren’t run on a regular basis - at least not to my knowledge and the results are also not published. Its not quite nice, but building kdelibs every night ...read more...

Marco Martin: Tabbed plasming

System & Utilities

Quick video: this is a proof of concept plasmoid i wrote quite some time ago and then forgotten to talk about :)
Is a little tabbar meant to be put in a panel that lists all your desktop activities and lets you switch them in a quick way, as seen in the video it also keeps itself syncronized if something changes, so if you switch with the zoom user interface it switches accordingly, it creates and remove tabs when desktops are created or removed.

The name of the tab is the name of the activity you can set in the desktop wallpaper/theme/etc configuration dialog.
The name it's just the beginning of the activity concept, in the future the desktops and the applets in it will be aware and will react to their context, like what time is it, is the network attached or not, heck even what is our geographic coordinate...
But that's another and more exciting story that just a teeeny tab bar :p

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): what does a "KDE app" mean?

System & Utilities Pet peeve #47: Assuming that "a KDE app" means "you have to be logged into KDE to use it".

We run into this misconception fairly regularly and it's understandable why from a historical perspective: KDE started out as a "desktop environment project". But come on ... we've only had a fairly clear distinction between desktop and applications for how many years now?

But wait .. it's not clear! Otherwise I wouldn't read stuff like this:

"Amarok sure inspires a lot of KDE-envy for Gnome users. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit in well in Gnome: It’s written for a different desktop environment, uses a whole different toolkit, and requires a lot of extra libraries to run." - Free Software Magazine, article

The article goes on to pimp Rhythmbox which is all well and good. Use what you want, I say. Make educated decisions and you'll come out further ahead, I also say:iIf you're suffering from "Amarok envy" and it's the use of KDE libraries that puts you off ... it's time for a re-think.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): La(w)yers :: GPLv3

System & Utilities Within KDE e.V. (the association that supports the KDE project in things organizational, legal and financial) I often use the tagline "I talk to lawyers so you don't have to." While talking to lawyers on friday I discovered that in that context I can use "I talk to engineers so you don't have to," and then everyone is happy.

The occasion was a (somewhat belated) presentation and launch of GPLv3 in the Netherlands by Shane C. of the FSFE. I bested Shane at muffining (muffing?) once more. The GPLv3 parts I had heard before, but I did enjoy the close-reading by Maurice Schellekens which pointed out a few ambiguities or issues that require comment. It's clear that the patent grant language remains tricky.

One reason I like to attend these kinds of meetings is that I can explain the interests and intent of developers -- we're not really interested in the language of the license, but mostly what it enables us to ...read more...

Mike Arthur (mikearthur): Bad Phorm

No Phorm
So apparently the UK government doesn’t care about a private company wiretapping it’s citizens and giving them to another company (for money) as long as when they roll it out to everyone they are sure to ask for permission first (i.e. most probably at the end of a huge EULA).

I can’t say I’m surprised but I am pretty disappointed. When it first emerged on The Register that Phorm had been monitoring the internet communications of BT customers I was a BT employee. When it came out that BT outright lied on to those tech-savvy customers who raised the issue my opinions of my employer had sadly dropped to an all-time low.

I’m not someone who believes in publicly criticising the company I am currently working for (partly because the company I work for currently is awesome) and didn’t want to straight after I left at the risk of seeming bitter or unprofessional but I feel it ...read more...

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): Eigen 2.0 beta1 released

System & Utilities We just released the beta version of Eigen 2.0. It has matured a lot over recent weeks as quite a number of apps have been ported to it: Avogadro, KOffice (mainly Krita and a little KSpread), KGLLib, SolidKreator, KGLEngine. I have started working on a Mandelbrot fractal wallpaper-plugin for Plasma, using Eigen 2.0 for portable vectorization. We also have people on the mailing list doing very interesting things with Eigen 2.0: one is an engineer using it to design airplane engines, a few others use it for advanced computer graphics/vision. We plan to release 2.0 later this fall, in time for KOffice 2.0 and KDE 4.2.

There is now a quite decent Tutorial which is a good starting point if you're interested in Eigen.

Besides polishing for the upcoming 2.0 release, we are already making big plans for the future. Version 2.1 will have a complete Sparse module, which will be very useful for Krita and Step. Gael has been ...read more...

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): How to save the planet in a weekend

System & Utilities

This morning KDE is waking up to a shiny new Planet blog aggregator. I'm not sure what caused this, but there are reports the old host didn't want the CPU load on their server any more, many thanks to them for having put up with it for many years. Fortunately I'd been working on a new Planet started by Chris Lee using rawdog and my own Rawdog RSS plugin. The design comes from the exceedingly cool Oxygen dudes, Nuno and Ruphy.

Interestingly the first comments from a lot of people are about it using Launchpad as a tracker for feed requests.
