Dan Jensen (leinir): The Old-style Playlist Is Dead, Long Live The Old-style Playlist

System & Utilities Yes, i know this sounds contradictory to what markey said in his recent blog, but i felt the need to elaborate somewhat on his statement regarding the old-style playlist being gone. While yes, this is entirely true, and good riddance (as it says), this is mainly because it is far too inflexible. The new playlist is vastly superior in all ways, and i shall spend a few moments describing to the doubters just why this is so.

The most often mentioned dislike with the new playlist is, well, the new playlist - or to be more exact, the default layout used in the new playlist. In my original post of mockups of the new playlist layout, i failed to touch on the topic of the layouting system needed for it. This is really where the whole thing comes together and enables those who dislike the new fanciness to get back to using the old, 90s style playlist view.

A bit of graphics always helps with understanding such things, ...read more...

Ivan Cukic: KDE 3 (yes, three) is the new Gnome?

System & Utilities

This is only a rant with a highly provocative title, which reflects onto the contents of the post, but not in the way you have expected when you first read it.

So stop yelling your comrades to start to “sharpen the forks”. :D

So, what is this all about?

Well, for a long time now, I keep my system mostly clean of Gnome/GTK programs. Only a few remain (and probably will for both foreseeable and unforeseeable future), and those are GVim, Gimp (big kudos for the last version goes to the developers), Inkscape and Synaptic. Apart from those, whenever I need a program for something, I first search for KDE or Qt based applications, and only if those are non-existent, I consider installing something else.

So, what the hell is this title all about?

It’s about the fact that I have realized that now I’m avoiding KDE/Qt 3 programs as well. For example, I have lived without Digikam and K3B until the KDE 4 ports started to become usable. ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall

System & Utilities [[ Yes, it's Violent Femmes Reference Time again! ]] I've gone and set up some Mercurial repositories and clones and whatnot now, some of which are publicly accessible, some which are local to my workstation, and somewhat to my surprise I can see the season's cycle [[ XTC reference time! ]] that Aaron, Dirk and Sebas talked about show up in a fairly natural fashion. And I've come up with another mixed metaphor, that development life is a highway [[ Tom Petty? ]] and you can ride it all night long, but there must be some way to get out .. nah. I'll just explain later.

DVCS Diagram

The top three repositories are publicly accessible. Master is the gold standard, the released stuff, the this-is-totally-stable-and-usable repository. Staging pulls from Master and is the beta-and-release-candidate repository, where things end up that are probably releasable; this is stable for enthusiast users to follow and is where the developers coordinate and polish before things get into master. Then ...read more...

Pau Garcia i Quiles (pgquiles): CMake-ifying git

System & Utilities

I’m going to use git for a project of mine and instead of parsing git’s output (which is the adviced way to use it from your application), I thought I’d rather use libgit and link to it. The first step was getting rid of autohell and moving to CMake.

This patch against git’s current master branch includes the CMakeLists.txt file and a few modifications to the source (mostly due to the different way variable replacement works in autotools vs CMake).

So far, only libgit, libxdiff and git are built. Will I go go for the other binaries (gitweb, gitk, etc)? I’m not sure, as I’m not interested but it shouldn’t be difficult to CMake-ize those.

I think the move from autotools to CMake could be very useful for the msysgit* developers, as they no longer would depend on MSys*

* I have not tried to build git on Windows with my CMakeLists.txt yet, I’ll do it tomorrow

** It’s not actually true yet: I ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: I fashioned you from jewels and stone

System & Utilities

These days, here at Qt Software (nee Trolltech) we are as busy as working bees. Not only due to a point release, but also because the exciting, upcoming Qt 4.5 is in the horizon. Some of us have blogged about its new features, such as Cocoa support and Qt Falcon. As part of the QtWebKit team, we integrated a fresh version of QtWebKit into 4.5, which you might notice already when you monitor our snapshots. In the past few months, we wrote a bit about QtWebKit development, but hopefully we can still present an overall summary once time permits.

From my side, I just completed the first 6-month period in Trolltech. Things are exciting as ever. In one week, I will be in Munich. In three weeks, Redwood City is the next stop. Yes, I will be there for the ...read more...

it-s: On Games, Icons, and Backgrounds :)

System & Utilities
Hallo dear Earthlings :D

Last time around I've promised to keep you up to date with all the new and exciting in KDEGames. And so keeping my promise up (even though the stock market is down) I present you the first blog of that series.

Now, there is a lot of incredible things going on right now in the playground/games, but before we dive into the depth of area [0] of KDE development I would like to bring you up to date on the current state of KDEgames trunk. That one unfortunately is rather stagnant at the moment, and yet still there are quite a few things I can show you there.
So, without further adieu I present you Kpat - the patience (and much, much more) card game for KDE.

Lets start with the start up screen :D

We at KDEGames think it's a great improvement, as it allows a player to easily choose a game player wants. And still we would like to hear your say on this :)

Next comes the new Kpatience backgrounds... And we are a ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Mercurial on FreeBSD

System & Utilities Distributed VCS are in -- and they are claimed to be the best if not only way for large but loosely-knit projects like KDE to operate efficiently. Sebas and Dirk said so, and so did Thiago. The term "loose-knit" here applies to schedules; socially and technically I would say we're a fairly tight-knit group, but when it's summer here it's Tuesday in Belgium, so our schedules do not always work together. Hence DVCS which supports, in various ways, nicer ways of working together with support for everyone's schedule.

So it is said. I'm still not sure if it is the solution or even a solution, and I'd file myself under the DVCS skeptics.

But in order to be skeptical or critical, you've got to have tried it first and worked on doing it right. I always tell my kids they have to try their vegetables (including wonderful beet-pumpkin-ginger soup, but they didn't like it). The first time you try to ride a bike (and fall ...read more...

Alejandro Wainzinger (xevix): Media Devices Applet

System & Utilities To control connection/disconnection of media devices, along with advanced functionality such as the stale-and-orphaned feature for iPods in Amarok 1.4, some kind of GUI is needed. One of the discussed long-term ideas is to add functionality into the root item of a treeview, which has its merits in terms of simplicity. However, imagine that you plug in your device, and want to connect to it. The collection would have to be present in a kind of dormant state in the collection browser until you hit connect in the root item. This could work, but it's admittedly odd to have a "dead" collection sitting around.

Since modifying the root item of a treeview was beyond my current knowledge, I wanted to play with plasma a bit, and it gave me more leeway, both in terms of creativity and space, I decided, at least for now, on a Media Devices applet. Some of you may have seen the ghost of this thing in svn and wondered what the dickens it is, so I'll explain to you its current functionality first, and ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): kdesvn-build 1.7.1

System & Utilities

OK, so that last release had a slight bug that basically caused it to not work at all for new modules (i.e. ones you’d svn checkout instead of svn update). And then when I fixed one bug it turned out I unmasked a bug that kept qt-copy from configuring. All that then helped me find an unrelated bug too so a day later you get a kdesvn-build with 3 bugfixes.

In honor of the occasion I’ve code-named kdesvn-build 1.7.1 “Tacoma Narrows”.

Seb Ruiz (sebr): Amarok 2 Beta 2 released

System & Utilities

You may have already noticed, that we have released Amarok 2, beta 2. This is a very exciting release for us as we have put an incredible amount of effort into features and bug fixes. This release pushes most of the significant work which was discussed or achieved during Akademy, such as changes to the Amarok core which will bring significant stability improvements and improved user experience.

We’ve made a rather large change with the removal of SQLite as our database backend, opting instead for the MySQL-embedded platform. As I know that many users might not be able to rationalise this change, allow me to explain. MySQL-embedded provides users with the performance boost of a standalone server without actually needing to run the server and without needing to bother with the rather complex procedures of intialising a database, users and permissions. It was also important for us to only support one database backend as we were constantly plagued with problems across different databases. Using MySQL-embedded will thus make it very easy for us to support standalone MySQL ...read more...

Girish Ramakrishnan: KWord: ODF Lists

System & Utilities It's been a long busy month. With the impending 2.0 release, I have been hacking away polishing up ODF list support for KWord.

Here's a list of improvements coming up
  • Support for saving and loading ODF text:list. This was a lot of work. ODF lists are complex beasts. It was major help that Thomas Zander had done a lot of work in supporting lists and numbering of lists in the layout. We now support the important ODF 1.1 list attributes like space-after, min-label-distance, text-align, min-label-width
  • Support for editing lists and sublists, similar to OOo and MS Word. Press tab to increase the indentation level. Press Backtab to decrease the level
  • Support for loading and saving lists as numbered-paragarph. This means that documents written with KWord 1.x can be loaded up with 2.0. However, KWord does not save as numbered-paragraph because neither OOo nor KWord 1.x can load it correctly (KWord 1.x seems to use the optional text:number tag to determine numbering).
  • Support for list headers
  • Support for unnumbered paragraphs. In ODF, a list-item can contain multiple paragraphs. As a result, the ...read more...

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Automated HCI testing: a research project aimed for use with KDE

System & Utilities

Stupid wordpress. second time I’m writing this. OK, I would like to present my idea for the research project I will work on for a year from now.

Problem: Users don’t test usability in FOSS software enough. It’s too laborous and unrewarding.

Solution: Take advantage of the fact that many users enjoy trying out new features, but don’t go so far as to actually download, compile and test unreleased software. Build a solution that let’s them test unreleased software easily. Use technologies such as klik or glick to include all needed libraries in a single runnable binary. Allow for instrumenting the software with automated tests (for example, with a qt app, one could use a class that would attach to all qt buttons and menus and generate statistics on which buttons were used most, and how a certain task was performed, maybe even record all events and do some sort of a playback that the developer can observe). Distribute this instrumented software to a large group of users and generate a summary of the results that the developer ...read more...

Ian Geiser (geiseri): Going on the web with Qt

System & Utilities

So I have been working underground for a while on a web framework based on Qt but its gotten out of control and I need more help on it. The initial goal was to write a creole 1.0 compliant wiki based on Qt, but soon it grew into a full framework because of the lack of good C++ tools to do web development.

So far I have the following features working:
1) Simple .UI to XHTML transformations.
2) Basic form widget support ( line edits, selection boxes, buttons etc).
3) Rudimentary DOM event to Qt slots working.
4) Full bidirectional mapping of QVariantMaps to JSON objects.
5) Creole 1.0 wiki parser that generates XHTML complaint XML
6) All XHTML generated by the HTMLWidgets is XHTML strict valid.
7) Works under IE 6-7, Firefox 2-3, and most webkit based browsers.

What is not working that I need help on:
1) A better layout engine to handle transformations from the UI files better. There is an example at http://geiseri.no-ip.org:8080/cgi-bin/creole.cgi that shows im close but ...read more...

I assume it’s only a matter of time before the Marble crew contacts us; I bet they plan a hostile takeover of this event in the same way they took over Akademy.  I’d find their Secret Lair ™ to stop them, but I’m certain they’ve added code to keep it hidden in Marble.  How is this possible with open source?

Pau Garcia i Quiles (pgquiles): Raising awareness of KDE on Windows

System & Utilities

Most of my coworkers use Qt4 but only on Windows. Some of them did not even know KDE existed, much less that since KDE 4.1 there are official packages and an official installer for Windows.

Last week, I wandered around the office, occasionally assaulting people to show them KDE on Windows, the API docs, this-and-that widget, answering their questions (mostly technical), etc (if you know how tackatpromotioned Marble at past aKademy-s, you know what I did :-) )

So, what was the reaction of people to KDE? Surprisingly, extremely good! I was expecting more resistance to the fact that to use K* classes, KParts, etc you have to convert your QApplication to a KApplication but they went like “the advantages of using KDE classes and KDE’s ActiveX [that's how some of them call KParts] are so obvious I will do that as soon as I installing a development version of KDE on Windows is easy”. ...read more...

kdesvn-build 1.7 is out. The list of features/bugfixes is fairly long and I don’t feel like re-massaging it. I think it warrants you grabbing it if you’re already using it though.

Also, Just Say No™ to broken icons! I just fixed the help:/ kioslave today to have a correct icon assigned to it. If you notice the “question mark” icon (which is the “unknown” icon in Oxygen), find out where it’s defined and either fix it or let someone know who can fix it. I’ve noticed that the kwrite icon shows up as a question mark for me in KRunner but I can’t figure that one out as its .desktop file looks correct…

Michael Leupold (lemma): KDEPimDay1 results, next buday: Konqueror

System & Utilities Our KDEPimDay1 was quite successful - although we didn't have as many helping hands around as I had hoped for. In total we managed to triage around 200 pim- and groupware-related bugs, about 50 of which will be closed for good in the next few days.

A big thank you to everyone involved, people triaging bugs, people offering their servers for the bugday as well as the KDE PIM people who were around to answer our questions and get started on some of the bugs.

Sidenote 1: Most of the groupware servers will stay around. So if you're a PIM developer or want to improve support for your favourite groupware server, feel free to come to #kde-bugs and ask for access.
Sidenote 2: On my last post liquidat asked for more than sheer numbers as results to our bugday. So this goes out to everyone trying the different groupware connectors: Which groupware servers worked the best, which didn't work at all?

Next Sunday (12th of October) we'll ...read more...

Before Akademy 2008, Troy and I discussed starting an annual conference on this side of the Atlantic.  Thanks to the feedback from our KDE 4 Release Event (rave reviews, fan mail, awards, endless paparazzi, marriage proposals, offers for discounted psychiatric care), we realized the time was right to begin fostering and expanding KDE’s community in the Americas.  In addition, a 6 month release schedule synchronized with two conferences seems like a sensible idea: Akademy in the summer and a new conference in the winter.  Will KDE always have a 6-month release schedule?  Doubtful, but it’s a good enough excuse for now to meet up with friends in the winter and celebrate our accomplishments.

After going over proposals for a potential location, the winner of the inaugural event is: Jamaica.  Combining the popularity of KDE in Central and South America, along with the proposed times on the calendar, you ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): graphics week

System & Utilities Recently I looked over our packages again and I just remembered that KDE on Windows still misses some good picture viewers (No, Marble is not yet good for that task ;-) ). So I decided to look at kdegraphics a bit more as gwenview was still not building. I just recently wiped out most errors out of my exiv2 cmake buildsystem patch and now I wanted to try that out. And so I did - the result is that along the windows 4.1.2 packages you will find gwenview.

If I find some time in the coming days, I will try to work on digikam; we won't be able to get the gphoto support on windows in the near future, but I hope I can get that part optional so that we can have at least a starting point.
p.s.: The packages won't be ready before sunday evening I guess.
p.p.s.: Here is the proof:

Alex Merry: /me hates my DVD drive

System & Utilities

I’ve finally given up on my DVD drive.  For a long time, VLC has been the only thing that would countenance even trying to play DVDs on it, and even that occasionally claimed that there was an audio CD in the drive until it was removed and put in again.

Now, after upgrading libdvdcss and unplugging a harddrive from the IDE channel my DVD drive is on, trying to play dvds gets me:

export DVDCSS_VERBOSE=2 && vlc /dev/dvd

libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdcss debug: opening target `/dev/dvd’
libdvdcss debug: using libc for access
libdvdcss debug: disc is scrambled
libdvdcss debug: requesting AGID
libdvdcss error: drive would not authenticate
libdvdread: Could not open /dev/dvd with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can’t open /dev/dvd for reading
libdvdnav: vm: faild to open/read the DVD

Epic fail.  Other people have had this problem with AOpen drives, so I think it’s high time I got a new DVD rewriter.  Preferably one that can ...read more...

Gustavo Boiko: Yafaray using Qt

System & Utilities

Yafaray is the development version of the open source rendering suit Yafray. The code structure has been totally reviewed and it has gained many new features.

Some time ago I have written an experimental Qt GUI for it (yafaray-qt) which was already fully functional (allowing for loading XML scene and saving them to the image formats supported by Qt itself). Some weeks ago this interface became the official yafaray UI (even if using it as a blender plugin):

yafaray GUI

yafaray GUI

It is very basic for now, but it does its job already. There are plans for adding more stuff on it, but for now it will stay like that for awhile.

As soon as Mandriva Cooker reopens for development I’ll create a package for yafaray and make it available for testing. For those interested in trying it before that, here is the announcement.
