System & Utilities

Every time you use CONFIG+=ordered, a kitten dies.

System & Utilities

QMake users: public service announcement. If you use CONFIG+=ordered, please stop right now. If you don't, I'll hunt you down. I promise to god I will.

There is simply no reason to use this, ever. There's two reasons this might be in your project file:

  1. you have no idea what you are doing, and you copied it from somewhere else
  2. you have a target that needs to be built after another target, and you don't know any better
If you fit into category 1, then I hope you're turning red right now, because by using CONFIG+=ordered, you're effectively screwing over multicore builds of your code. See a very nice case of this here.

If you fit into category 2, then you're doing it wrong. You should specify dependencies between your targets properly like this:

TEMPLATE = subdirs
SUBDIRS = src plugins tests docs
plugins.depends = src
tests.depends = src plugins

And then you'll have docs built whenever the build tool feels like it, and the rest built when their dependencies are built.

If you have subdirectories involved in this, ...read more...

Welcome "ownCloud Documents"

System & Utilities

A couple of weeks ago I blogged about the new features in ownCloud 6. I promised a special surprise in the coming weeks. And here it is. ;-)

In the past few month we have worked on a feature that will be super useful and popular. All the development happened in a public repository on github but we haven't talked about it in public and perhaps it wasn't obvious what it was for people who found it by accident.

I'm talking about collaborative editing! This feature is implemented in an app called "ownCloud Documents" and will be part of ownCloud 6. People can view and edit their ODF text documents directly in the browser, inside your ownCloud. Another cool thing is that you can invite users from the same ownCloud to work collaboratively on the same document with you. Or you can send invitation links by email to  people outside your server to collaborate with you on the document.

Several people can navigate in the same document with different  cursors at the same time and you can see the ...read more...

Yo, dogg, about those HDDs

System & Utilities

HDD cleanup continues apace. I did like the wisecrack about semantic storage — although it’s not quite correct, since these are drives removed from otherwise decommissioned machines, or tarballs rolled of my university student account before the departmental Solaris server was decommissioned. It’s more like moving boxes never before opened (I know there’s several that I moved house with 8 years ago that are still awaiting an opening moment). In the mean time I’ve discovered a bunch of academic papers I had forgotten I had ever written and a bunch of OCaml I wrote that I no longer understand, as well as several versions of my bachelor’s thesis written in the winter of 1998.

Anyway, while futzing about with all these drives I’ve set up my main machine as FreeBSD 9.2-STABLE, running KDE 4.10 (which is as new as the KDE-FreeBSD ports are — 4.11 introduces some interesting new breakage which hasn’t been dealt with yet). I could repeat what I wrote several years ago: with KDE on top, noone knows what you’re running underneath and ...read more...

HDD Cleanup

System & Utilities

Last week I sat down with a pile ‘o hard drives of varying vintage (although all of them SATA-era), ranging from 80GB to 500GB, which had been used in machines over the past ten years. The idea being to sort out what’s where and why and to consolidate the interesting bits. First order of business on each drive was figuring out what partitioning scheme and filesystems were on there. I suppose if you stick to one OS over time that’s a simple thing, but I have fdisk+ext2 filesystems, gpt+zfs, gpt+gmirror+gstripe+ufs and other things in the mix. Reconstructing the path from two physical drives labeled “Comice” and “Anjou” to a readable filesystem can take a while.

Anyway, interesting bits have been recovered, like an older mp3 collection of mine ripped from CDs I can no longer find (they must be somewhere in the house, in a box labeled “beware of the leopard” or something like that).
Some of the drives were once in various KDE servers or machines I gave acces to for KDE ...read more...

PIM Sprint, here I come!

System & Utilities

I just booked my train tickets to Brno for the KDE PIM Sprint 2013 this November!

There I plan to discuss the future of KMail Active with Michael Bohlender, my ideas for task-centric communication using KPeople with the KPeople people (muahahaha!), as well as general KDE PIM usability stuff with everybody who does UIs in KDE PIM. And, given that people like Àlex Fiestas, David Edmundson, Jan Grulich, Vishesh Handa or Martin Klapetek are there as well, there will probably also be quite some non-PIM-related stuff to talk about.

Since sprints are mostly “hacking time” for the devs, I will have to find some non-discussion stuff to do during the times when all you can hear in the room is the clacking of keyboards, so maybe I’ll use the time to improve my QML skills (a KDE sprint is surely a good occasion for that because there are always people around who know QML quite well already).

I’m looking forward to seeing so many nice ...read more...

Bodega Asset Ratings

System & Utilities
One crucial feature for a content store are the ratings of an asset,
every content store needs some ratings in its assets. So we had to figure
out how to handle the ratings in in bodega, my idea was to
use the 5-star rating system. I was thinking “What could go wrong? Its the system that most of
the content systems are using.” well here is what it could go wrong http://xkcd.com/1098/ :)
The image from the xkcb explains how meaningless is the 5-star rating system. Then Aaron proposed an alternative solution and is the one which we use. Every category of assets would have a few rating attributes
which would have a description and a value. So, here is an example, all the assets of the category games would have rating attributes such as:
  • performance
  • stability
  • playability
those attributes can have values from 1-5 which will have guiding text to help the user decide how to rate the item. for instance, stability might have as 1 star the value ...read more...

New Wraparound Tool!

System & Utilities

Krita 2.8 will have some really awesome features! Today we are going to show you the new "Wraparound Tool" that will be available in the next release.

This cool feature is for creating infinitely tilable textures, just press "W" key and start to enjoy:

{youtube}9ICGks0-InQ{/youtube}

Thanks to Paul Geraskin (Mifth) for this video!

It consists of two parts:

  1. View Part: repeats your image on the display.
  2. Brush Engine: painting outside of the image borders will look like the borders are connected to each other, that will seem that you are painting being inside a closed sphere. It will never end!

Above usual painting, you can use "Move Tool" in this mode. Try it and get a nice, psychedelic effect :)

Switching to Kubuntu comments

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

Some comments on switching to Kubuntu from a recent Slashdot article...

I switched to Kubuntu ... I haven't looked back. I like *buntu distributions simply because they're the easiest to get up and running. Unless you need a highly customized Linux system, you can't argue with *buntu's simplicity when it comes to installation.

I can't upvote this enough. Kubuntu is a perfectly decent distro. KDE 4 has finally come of age.

I just wiped my box after a drive failure and went Kubuntu. It's early days but so far I love it. It's very polished, responsive and easy to get "functional" IE with binary NVIDIA driver, non-free codecs etc. It feels like a premium product I should have to pay for.

The End of the Google Summer of Code

System & Utilities

The GSoC coding period has ended last Monday. In this blog post, I will summarize what I have done during the summer, to give a general idea of what you can expect from a future version of Nepomuk, if my work is accepted by the Nepomuk maintainers.

The source code of the first two projects is available in the steckdenis-gsoc2013 branches of the nepomuk-core and nepomuk-widgets Git repositories. The browser plugin can be found in the scratch/dsteckelmacher/nepomukintegration.git scratch repository.

The Nepomuk Query Parser

The first part of my GSoC project was to implement a new user query parser for Nepomuk. This parser is responsible for translating queries entered by the user into a formal representation suitable for querying the Nepomuk database.

Project Goals

The current version of the parser (that is used for years now) is based on regular expressions. It recognizes a language close to what you can use on Google (“foo -bar title:something”). At the beginning of the project, Vishesh Handa explained me that this parser has limitations (it is not able to parse file sizes, and its parsing of date-time ...read more...

How KDE Connect encryption works

System & Utilities

The goal of this post is that the security experts out there find flaws in our design so we could improve the security of KDE Connect, which is an important point. Probably this will get too technical if you don’t know what RSA keys are, so proceed under your own responsibility ;) .

The first thing we need in KDE Connect is the discovery of other devices. At the moment we provide a single backend that uses network UDP broadcast to achieve this. When a devices connects to a new network, it sends a broadcast message with its unique ID and name and how reach it (that is: ip and port). Other devices will react to that broadcast sending back their own information, so both devices will know each other.  (Note: We tried Avahi instead of a manual UDP broadcast, but finally we didn’t use it because we found two main problems: the Android implementation is of extreme poor quality, plus multicast is sometimes blocked by routers :( ).

At this point the ...read more...

Frismakers Festival Berlin – “Open Source as a corporate culture”

System & Utilities

Is it possible to convey an idea comprehensively  in 5 minutes? The Frismakers movement seems to think so. I had a chance to try it at the recent Frismakers Festival in Berlin, where I presented on how we apply the Open Source way to build Endocode and its corporate culture. This was a challenge for the five minute format because it is just not a trivial idea.

Endocode Frismakers PresentationThe question I raised in the talk was how experienced Open Source contributors would design a company. When asked about what motivates them, contributors often say it is the sense of creative accomplishment and working with others that share their interests. When we started Endocode, we wanted to retain and channel that kind of intrinsic motivation. While others are searching for the Open Source business model, we wanted to create a business that allowed us to work in the Open Source Way, a place where contributors like us would want to work. Among other things, ...read more...

Some updates

System & Utilities

Hello everybody!

It’s been a while since my last post, and it’s about time i tell you some of the progress on the kmix2 project. At last, kmix has now multimedia players support. For now, all major mpris-enabled audio players are ready and stable. Supported players for now are: Amarok, VLC and Clementine! I’ve having some thoughts about the libraries needed to support them. First thought was to create a generic mpris library and call every player using its respected dbus path. That seemed a little inconvenient, as long as differnt players support different/or unique features that other players don’t. That said, at some point we would need a different class for amarok, an other class for vlc etc supporting those features. The best idea (so far) was to create a different class for every player, in which I code its mpris implementations plus all the other features via dbus. All these classes are exposed to a central class by the name «Players», so everybody who wants multimedia players support can just create a Players class instance in his/her code ...read more...

Short Tip: Fix input/output error while creating LVM backed VMs with libvirt

System & Utilities

shell.png
Today I run into a strange error where I was not able anymore to create new VMs with virt-manager: I always got an input/output error when I tried to start the machine after installation.

A look into /var/log/syslog showed quite some errors on the dm-device – note that my VMs disks usually are on logical volumes.

Sep 12 15:27:55 example kernel: [19298.163712] device-mapper: snapshots: Invalidating snapshot: Unable to allocate exception.
Sep 12 15:27:55 example kernel: [19298.243980] Buffer I/O error on device dm-5, logical block 1081985
Sep 12 15:27:55 example kernel: [19298.243983] lost page write due to I/O error on dm-5
Sep 12 15:27:55 example kernel: [19298.243994] Buffer I/O error on device dm-5, logical block 1081986
Sep 12 15:27:55 example kernel: [19298.243994] lost page write due to I/O error on dm-5

The fix is pretty easy: when you create the disk and thus the LV for the virtual machine, make sure you tell virt-manager that it should allocate the entire disk right from the start. ...read more...

Amarok 2.0

System & Utilities

Finally, Amarok 2 has been released. The 1.x series were the champions on music management (on BSD and Linux) and playing during KDE 3.x time. Actually, it was preferred on all desktop environments, shells or plain windows managers.

KDE 4 meant (and means) an enormous refactoring of basely all KDE. Amarok developers decided that was the moment for a new GUI (Graphical User Interface). At first users, seemed to be happy about it (they were they beloved Amarok creators), however, as time passed they truly started hating the new interface, some adapted, other are still using Amarok 1.4.x, and the majority, completely migrate to another application.

After that little introduction, let's explore how, the controversial, Amarok 2 is:

Amarok 2
As always, let's begin by how it looks the first time you run it, in this regard Amarok has definitively improved, the old wizard ...read more...

Plasma 2 Snapshot Demo

System & Utilities

For those interested in the progress of KDE Frameworks 5 and Plasma 2, I’ve recorded a demo video which shows a few aspects of the current state of development of the upcoming version of your favourite Desktop.

The demo video shows the new Plasma shell running, including a panel with the task manager. It shows a demo applet doing some OpenGL tricks. The Kwin window manager and compositor is running in its Qt5 / Frameworks 5 incarnation, and there’s konsole, which has also already been ported to Frameworks 5.

Of course, all the usual warnings apply: This is a very early state of development, many things are missing, unstable or do not perform well yet. There’s also a fair bit of user interface cleanup and streamlining to be expected.

We are just about to enter a state where the desktop becomes dogfoodable, so we can use it ourselves regularly and find and iron out all kinds of bugs. The good news is of course that this ...read more...

The first idea was to have two versions of plasma-nm applet, one version for desktop and one for plasma active, but we had a session/discussion at the Akademy with Thomas and Bjorn and we came up with the perfect design which is suitable for both parties. No additional changes are needed to make the applet easily usable on Plasma active.

Device notifier porting progress

System & Utilities

As a part of SoK project, I am currently porting device notifier applet to Plasma2. Device notifier applet was already ported to QML by Viranch Mehta so it was somewhat easy task for me. In a Plasma2 port first task is to change versions of imports and some other modifications. Result was awesome, I got Device Notifier applet in working stage.

Device Notifier port initially

After that I ported config.ui file to config.qml because in Plasma 2 config.ui files are no longer used. To port config.ui files you can have a look at the code given in plasma-framework/examples/applets/conditionalloader. As a sidenote all example DataEngines in the plasma-framework/examples/dataengines are now ported to use KF5.

Here is a configuration dialog which is ported to QML.

Device Notifier configuration

But currently other options like Device actions, Removable devices are still missing.

Artikulate – User interface improvements

System & Utilities

Last four weeks I have worked on several features that would improve user interface in Artikulate.

My main focus points were:

1) a progress bar that shows the user how many phrases he learnt correctly,

2) menu creation,

3) improvement of display of user buttons for playing native speaker recordings and recording user own voice,

4) allowing the user to change the font of the displayed phrase.

The screenshot shows a view that a user have while learning a new phrase after the changes. You can see from the progress bar at the bottom that the user already have learnt correctly some words (green colour), expressions (blue colour) and phrases (orange colour). The user can switch between the words, expressions, sentences and phrases by clicking on the progress bar. There are also two separated sections for media buttons: native speaker section and user section. The user section has a record and play button so the user can record himself and then listen to his own recording in order to compare with a native speaker one.Image ...read more...

QtDD Tickets, EMail Disasters

System & Utilities

Just a reminder we still have sponsored tickets available for Qt Dev Days in Berlin in October, and a limited amount of travel and accommodation sponsorship to help you get there. See my previous blog for details.

If you've already emailed me and haven't heard back then I can only apologise and ask that you please email me again. Unfortunately my web host decided that I was a spammer and suspended some of my email accounts, and in their wisdom then informed me by emailing an account they had just suspended... A week later I finally noticed I was only getting 20% of my usual email volumes and managed to sort the mess out.  Perhaps it's fate telling me to migrate to MyKolab :-)

KDE PIM Autumn sprint, please register!

System & Utilities

Hi folks,

The doodle results pointed very clearly at the middle of November as
the ideal time for the next PIM sprint. So that is official now.
November 15 – 17 is set.

Daniel Vrátil very generously offered the sprint to take place at the
RedHat office in Brno (Czech republic). I happily accepted that so
that’s where the sprint is going to take place.

The sprint page has been created [1] and everyone planning to join is
invited to subscribe on that page. If you want to be able to reimburse
[3] your traveling and hotel costs then you have to provide those
costs before October the 1st of 2013.

You are also invited to fill in the stuff you want to work on (or
discuss) at the sprint on this [2] wiki page.

I will post this on planetkde as well and will post reminders once
every 4 weeks.

Regards,
Mark
