Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): Python Plasmoids.

System & Utilities Simon, our worshippalicous python bindings hacker came by tonight for a bit of hacking (he lives across the river from here, about 20 minutes by bike on a well OSM-mapped route. I was keen to get the new Python scriptengine Sime has just landed in SVN running so I can play around with Plasmoids written in Python.
The steps to get Python Plasmoids on running on your desktop are (assuming you have KDE from SVN installed): installing python, sip and pyqt into your development environment; building kdebindings, then you can build the plasma scriptengine located in kdebase. There are building instructions on TechBase.
Developing Plasma applets (which is pretty much the only thing you can do with the scriptengine right now, since there aren't any applets written yet -- except for the obligatory clock) is pretty easy from that point. You need to have a .desktop file containing some metadata and you actual script (which can be how ever long you wanted, it lands in contents/code/main.py and other .py's). ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): e.V. update

System & Utilities I've been meaning to post a quick update with my KDE e.V. hat on for a couple weeks now. I'm in between conference calls, so I figure this is my chance. ;)

Since Akadamy '08, we've had 11 people join KDE e.V. as members. They were all just announced formally on the mailing list, and it's terrific to see the e.V. continue to grow and see the flow of new developers mature into a known contributors who decide to take a step into the foundation that supports so much of KDE. This is how the e.V. stays relevant to the project as it provides a bond of trust that the directions the e.V. takes will reflect the current needs of the project.

KDE e.V. has been ticking out the progress points since Akademy in other ways as well. While Akademy is our Big Event each year, we do a lot more than that. We of course help coordinate (e.g. via our mammoth booth box) and fund (travel and lodging mostly) attendance at events around the world (though primarily ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): scheduling

System & Utilities The decision was made to file off some remaining sharp edges from libplasma and then move it into kdelibs on November 1. However, I was thrown a few curve balls this week in the form of some schedule changes due to things maturing quicker than I expected.

Instead of being around the house working on Plasma next week, I'm going to be in London on Monday for meetings and then off to Finland until the end of the work week. That means that the two weeks I thought I'd have to spend with the team finalizing the couple remaining bits of libplasma API is cut short. As of today I'm busy doing meeting agendas, presentations, organizing the house for my departure and what not.

We did manage to get ToolTipManager reviewed and polished, though, thanks in no small part to our resident API reviewer (aka "API slave driver" ;) Kevin Ottens and there's some final work being done with Corona with regards to screen geometry management (more on that and Kephal in a later blog report), but ...read more...

Michael Leupold (lemma): KOfficeDay1: Krush mastery

System & Utilities As you might have read on the dot, we'll be having our first ever (?) KOffice Bug Day this Sunday the 26th. KOffice 2 has just reached its beta2 release and I for my part can't wait to check it out - user- as well as bug-wise :-)

As a special bonus BugSquad won't just triage bugs but also do some krushing.

Now as I heard that "Krushing is a confusing term" I thought I'd put together some information about it similar to what I wrote about The Art of Bug Triage. This time I did however put all of it on the accompanying techbase wiki page which I assembled in preparation of Sunday. So here I present you:(Please note that some parts of those pages are still subject to change.)

Dario Freddi (drf__): Mobile Devices fun

System & Utilities

Hello everyone,

Today I wanted to show you yet another project I’m hacking on. For all of you who own a portable media player or a portable device, and are frustrated about not having a good application to manage it, you’d better listen up :)

I gave it a quick name, DeviceSync, that probably makes a bit of confusion about what it really does: it is a tool that is able to transfer files and manage devices, like iPods, MTP players, and whatever.

But let me show you what’s really cool about it :)

The power of plugins will make it easy to manage even the most uncommon devices

The power of plugins will make it easy to manage even the most uncommon devices

DeviceSync is completely plugin based. This means that through a nice API, developers will just have to write a simple plugin for their device type, ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Howto: pre-compile KHelpCenter index

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
The KDE help center contains the handbooks of all KDE programs. Unfortunately, the index is compiled for each user which is sub-optimal in larger deployments.

The Problem

The KHelpCenter is the central place to access the KDE program handbooks. It also offers an option to index all these data to quickly search through them. However, currently this is done on a per-user base and is offered as a dialog once the KHelpCenter is started the first time.

In larger deployments with several users per machine/server or where you have central login servers you might not want your central server to do the same task again and again, for each new user. Therefore it makes sense to a) pre-compile the data and b) configure all your KDE users to access a central directory.

The Solution

The first task can be accomplished by starting the index process manually and let it write to a system-directory:

khc_docbookdig.pl --indexdir=$SYSTEMDIR --docpath=khelpcenter:kde_application_manuals --identifier=kde_application_manuals

Of course ...read more...

Frans Englich (FransE): XML to QObjects: QXmlToQObjectCreator

System & Utilities

Thank you, to all who attended Dev Days 2008 in Munich. For me it was really great to talk to so many users and hear about all the baffling projects that people pull off with Qt. And of course, to hear how people use and what people need, in terms of Qt’s XML support.

One customer told about how sub-classes of QObject are used for representing data, and are converted to such from XML. So, why not add a little helper class to Qt for this?

The class, which currently only is a research idea and missed the feature freeze for Qt 4.5, is called QXmlToQObjectCreator, and hopefully the documentation explains it all:

QXmlToQObjectCreator API Documentation

In other words, it’s a very simple class that builds a QObject tree corresponding to the output of QXmlQuery. The current sketched code is pasted here, for those interested.

In what way can this class be made more useful?

Peter Zhou (peterzl): OpenSource Event in Mainland China

System & Utilities

I went to Beijing last weekend for the three-days GNOME Asia event. I was there not only for promoting KDE, but also to promote open source concept in mainland China.
Open source communities in mainland China are not as active as the European communities, neither GNOME nor KDE has a very good growing environment there. I’d rather regard it as an open source in general event in mainland China instead of a GNOME Asia summit.

Around 300 attenders went to the talks and BoFs, about 90% of them were local Chinese. There were employees from SUN, Novel, Nokia, Motorola, Redhat, and some Chinese local companies. There were students and opensource community members, and most of them were using open source operating systems. Although there are half of the talks and BoFs were introducing pure open source concept, histories and current situations, it is rather understandable that Asia people, especially mainland Chinese need this kind of education. As I introduced the scripting concept in Plasma and Amarok, there were also speakers focused on development and improvement of the current projects. ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): LibriVox - take 2

System & Utilities

Some time ago I wrote about the LibriVox script in Amarok. It has been ported now and works like a charm.
For those who don’t know how the script came to be: Hanno Svoboda reported a bug on bugs.kde.org saying that he would like to have LibriVox integrated in Amarok. We asked if there is a nice API we can use and Hanno got in touch with the LibriVox developers to find out. After some emails and chats everything we needed was provided and Nikolaj sat down to code the script for the service in a very short time and it is now one of our nicest scripted services. All of this was just a matter of a few days and getting the right people to work together.
Hanno has been so kind to do a short video. Please enjoy and thanks to Hanno for the video and for bringing this wonderful service to our attention in the first place.

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): Paros, Greece

System & Utilities

Due to lucky coincidences I got to spend one week in Greece together with my stepsister on a lovely island named Paros. It was great! Weather was nice enough to go swimming and get a sunburn. We got to see most of the island thanks to having rented a small car. Driving through the hills looking down on the water was fun. I can only recommend going to Paros in the last week of the tourist season like we did. Most of the time we only had to share hotel, beaches and restaurants with 2 or 3 people and often we even were on our own.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): plasma is now feature complete?

System & Utilities
Note: The following covers features and material that will be available in 4.2, which will not be released until January 2009.

No X11 desktop shell can be considered complete unless it has "eyes", right? Behold, new eyes plasmoid in all it's scalable SVG greatness!

Now that this is in kdeplasma-addons, our work here is obviously done. =P

On a more serious note, the Plasma team is making great progress these days. I particularly ike the new Plasma style notifications that are part of the new system tray:

If you have more than one notification, they stack up on top of each other. As you can see they have cute curved edges, even without composite, and they are themable. We'll be adding the UI server jobs there as well. And yes, those are Extenders! =)

The new system tray supports icon hiding, embedded Plasmoids and more. Fun! The panel configuration bar is looking really slick, and when the panel configuration is shown ...read more...

Girish Ramakrishnan: Tata Wimax keepalive

System & Utilities My tata wimax connection works well most of the time but it has a supremely annoying feature that to get connected, one is redirected to login in their login site (pretty much how the internet connection works in many hotels). If you are idle for sometime, it will auto logoff. Since my internet connection is not so fast, I usually download over the night and open a keepalive window.

This worked well up until a couple of months back. Now they seem to have decided to disconnect users at random times regardless of internet activity. Not to be deterred by the challenge, I started thinking of how to work around this. The login screen looks like this:

I needed something that keeps logging me in automatically. Qt/WebKit was the obvious choice. It would have been trivial had the post URL of the above form not been dynamic (i.e it has a magic session number in the ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): All packed and ready to go

System & Utilities I admire Aaron's dedication to the cause in suggesting a regular video cast about KDE technology. That's like teaching regular classes. I was a TA for many years, it's not something to be undertaken lightly. Tomorrow I'm filling in for a guest class in one of the software engineering classes in Nijmegen; my topic is licensing issues and compliance. I wouldn't want to do that regularly as a hobby, no sirree.

It strikes me that we (as a project and as an e.V.) have been investing more time and effort into schooling and teaching people how to be part of the community, how to contribute and how to make the most of the software that the KDE project produces. You (in the abstract) need to invest in order to create the contributors of tomorrow; it's easy to forget sometimes when you can fix bug X in less time than it takes to explain to someone how to fix bug X themselves. Doing the latter repays itself many times over in the long run.

Jakob Petsovits (jpetso): Maximum impact, minimum code

System & Utilities

Hi Planet KDE!

You might already know me from 2006 or 2007, but currently I'm gone from KDE because of other commitments. So technically you shouldn't hear from me right now; however, my buddy klausi drove me to it.

Surprising high amounts of KDE coders use non-KDE technology like vi or emacs to hack on KDE, and mostly they've got good reasons to do so. The only option to get those people use Kate or KDevelop is to continually improve those. The respective developer teams are doing awesome work in that regard, while my contribution for today is just a small KTextEditor plugin. (Which means you can use it in Kate, KDevelop or whatever KatePart-based editors exist out there.)

The plugin is called AutoBrace and, frankly, an uninspired clone of the best feature that you'll find in Eclipse (apart from the compile-as-you-go automatism and sheer infinite amounts of complexity). Right, it's the automatic insertion of a closing brace ("}") after you ended a ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): portability

System & Utilities This is a short rant about how portable code shouldn't look like:

else if (not defaultServerList.contains(server))
.
Those C99 boolean operator keywords(not, or, and) break here on windows and are not worth the annoyance.
I already had discussions about that once and I am not keen on doing that again. Thus I beg you to use the standardized operators !,||,&& from now on, so that I will never have to complain about that again.

I will add another post about the second biggest annoyance (export macros) soon, but this requires a longer post.

Espen Riskedal: We’re porting Qt to S60!

System & Utilities

April this year we started a new project here in Oslo called “Qt for S60″ and I’ve been wanting to blog about it ever since. Now I finally can! Basically we’re porting Qt to yet another platform: S60, which roughly gives us around 80 million new devices Qt can run on. Our vision of Qt Everywhere is becoming more and more of a reality. And it feels good.

Let’s get to the important stuff. Click here to:

About the tech-preview and the demos

The Qt for S60 pre-release packages comes in two license flavours, either download the opensource (GPL2 or GPL3) package or the preview-commercial package. Content wise there is no real difference between them. However, the opensource package contains pre-compiled binaries which the preview commercial package does not. The reason ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): KDE videocast, but when?

System & Utilities As I write this, over 470 people have taken the time to fill out the poll asking if I should do a KDE videocast and the affirmatives were overwhelming.

A significant percentage, nearly 1 in 5, are interested in development tutorials and information related to development. I didn't expect quite that big a percentage, to be honest, but that's great news.

A few were interested in the business aspects of things, but the majority are mostly interested in either anything and everything or else information of interest to the end user.

So I've decided that I will do a weekly show. Given the responses and some further thinking about it all, I've been working on a draft schedule that I could mold each show around:

  • Intro: 2 minutes of saying "Hi" and what the topics are for the show

  • "The Week in Review": 3 minutes covering quickie like release related updates, progress stats and news headlines from places such as theDot

  • "The Headline": 10 minutes on a topic I find interesting in ...read more...

Paul Adams: KDE 4 Is The New KDE 3 (Are /You/ Ready?)

System & Utilities

So, the eagle-eyed of you may have noticed something happen to my T61 as I was taking screenshots of the LTSP setup for LEL.... That's right! I have finally switched from my beloved KDE 3.5 to KDE 4.1. And I'm very happy about it indeed.

For a long time I was hearing all these tales of "KDE 4 is not ready for user type X. However, we recommend it for user types Y and Z" type stories. So, despite me spending lots of time studying the code, compiling the code and generally learning more about the guts of KDE, I wasn't actually using it. It finally clicked that I should make the switch when I got the LTSP going.

Some months ago when the #kwin Channel was created I decided to stop by and ask the wonderful people there about some weird ideas I had about shadows and fixing the bad windec corners on Oxygen. Luckily Lucas Murray had the patience to listen to me and actually something was started.
Basically we can now provide custom shadows for kwin and that includes active shadow and inactive shadow. The big bonus we got was that we can now ship shadows that include our corners without the aliasing problems. Casper Boemann endured me all weekend long moaning about pixels so we could get this results...

System & Utilities

You asked, and I deliver. I made an alternative stylesheet for Planet KDE with variable width. View -> Use Stylesheet -> Variable Width. My HTML foo is weak so it has mysterious gaps at below the header and above the footer for no reason I can see, plus the top and bottom shadow effects are semi-transparent and overlap in ways I wouldn't want. But it should be good enough for those wanting something that fits on an N810 screen.

Here's some pictures to keep you amused.

Bertjan Broeksema: Some love for KGpg

System & Utilities

For a course I did (Information Security) we had to create our own gpg key and do some signing and encrypting, well the normal stuff you seem to do with these things. As a side note, I did already did this twice some time ago but forgot the passwords of my private keys because I never used them so now I have two dangling accounts on the pgp servers *sigh*.

However, this made me have a look at KGpg which in turn made me cry. Heh, it seems in a not too good state. Having a bit of time, and being really annoyed by issues in the key server configuration page made me start hacking on it a bit. I fixed (hopefully) all issues in there. I have done this in trunk, maybe I should also back port this to 3.5 as the issues seems to be there also.

I don't know if there is a maintainer currently and if there is I hope I didn't pass you by. I did a quick search on bugs.kde.org but did not ...read more...
