Ariya Hidayat: bye, Munich. see you in US!

System & Utilities

I am back in Oslo for a short rest before flying again to US. Of course, I am still having symptoms of sleep deprivation, in the last 5 days in Munich I managed to accumulate only 19 hours of sleep. Though the schedule was tight, I could squeeze few hours of sight-seeing, among others to visit Castle Neuschwanstein and Viktualienmarkt.

At least in my opinion, Qt Developer Days 2008 in Munich was a success. Our fellow Trolls who organized this event did a great job. We announced a fresh Qt IDE called Greenhouse and also the first Pimp My Widgets contest (the pimp himself was there on-stage), ate a piece of the 5-years DevDays cake, had a wonderful dinner with the partners and customers, and of course enjoyed a lot of talks and discussions with them as well.

I was quite content with my ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): tomorrow: plasma meeting, and a poll for YOU!

System & Utilities Quick notification: on Saturday the 18th (tomorrow by my clock, but today already for many others) there is a Plasma meeting to determine our game plan leading up to the hard feature freeze mid-November. It will start at 15:00 UTC. Plasma people: be there, or be square!

I'm also considering doing a weekly live broadcast via Ustream.tv. I'd like to do some technical tutorials, do some general user updates and some KDE business related updates (e.V. stuff, for instance). I'd like to make it interactive with people asking questions or providing input on an IRC channel. I'm still not completely sold on the idea ... so I'd like to hear what you think.

Btw, I haven't found any Free internet broadcasters (meaning ones that don't use flash or other proprietary stuff), so if you know of one please let me know.

Also, if anyone knows of any decent Free software that runs on Linux that can combine a live video stream with a live desktop stream, please let me know. Otherwise, I think there's a ...read more...

Quick Look at KDE 4.2-SVN

"KDE4.2 is the next step in evolution of the new KDE branch. Comparing to KDE 4.1.2, it makes a 'new version' impression, and the applications are starting up a little bit faster.

Ariya Hidayat: message from the pumpkins

System & Utilities

Don't skip Viktualienmarkt, a 200-years-old food market in a square in Munich downtown (Viktualien apparently means food, or rather Lebensmittel in German). In those hundreds of stalls, you can find a lot of things, from fresh organic vegetables (and pumpkins, see above) to a wide selection of ready-to-eat seafood.

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Aligned data when doing a new

System & Utilities Dear LazyWeb...

I know i can use the gcc aligned attribute to align a variable, but is it possible to do that with memory i get doing a new or a malloc?

That is, i have a class that needs to have one of it's members aligned, so i need to declare the member to be aligned but that is not enough, i need to align the object itself, how?

Cyrille Berger: Getting something instead of a supernova

System & Utilities What I love when playing with computer graphics is when you try to achieve some effect, and you get something else entirely different, something that you would never have managed to achieve if you had tried to get it. I was trying to create a SuperNova generator using OpenShiva, and of course I managed to get all sort of ray shooting effects, nothing very surprising, except that I also got this:

I don't know what it is but I still find it cool. You can get the shiva code Something.shiva.

For the record, I finally managed to get a super nova effect:

You can get the shiva code SuperNova.shiva.

Harald Hvaal (metellius): @mark, seb, re: discoverability with automatically hiding widgets

System & Utilities

OK, I wanted to include a picture so I just made this into another blog post.
I would like to argue that this is more of a solution for making the app usable when it’s resized to less than normal sizes. If actually having to teach the user that it needs to make the window larger to get the controls he want on screen, then someone has messed up the defaults of the application. As long as it’s initially resized to a good size, it should feel natural to the user instantly if he sees windows grow smaller and then finally disappear when he gradually makes the window smaller.

And another point: have a look at this small krita.

…or even smaller!

Would you agree me with me if I say that in this case, the problem that the interface has just become practically unusable, should take priority over the fact ...read more...

Harald Hvaal (metellius): Space-prioritizing widgets

System & Utilities

A thought struck me just now. My impression is that a lot of applications, when resized, will just resize the widgets, UI, toolwindows, everything with it in a proportional manner. Wouldn’t it be better if when you resize, the less important widgets and window elements are just hidden, and pop up again once you enlarge the window and give it a bit more screenspace?

How about a way to prioritize the elements on screen, such that you can define some things as always-needed (kind of like always on top in window manager space), and rank other less important tools below that. My vision is then, that for example an app like Krita, once you make the app really small it would only show the bare necessity, in this case somethinglike just the picture and a color chooser.

A picture I made with my awesome gimp skills for those of you that cannot see my vision through my words:

Ana Guerrero (ana): Updates in kde4.debian.net

System & Utilities

It was complicated getting this done, but finally backports for 4.1.2 are available at kde4.debian.net. Thanks to the help of Aleix Pol and his Mac Mini, there are available packages for PowerPC now.

As well, I have uploaded a backport of Qt 4.4.3 (*), for AMD64, i386 and PowerPC. If you are using KDE 4.1.x, you definitively want to use this Qt 4 version with a bunch of bugfixes.

A lot of people mailed me in the last week asking about problems with the mirror, this was caused by kde4.debian.net being actually 2 mirrors in round robin and the secondary (and faster) one having some problems syncing.

(*) Yes, I know Qt 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 are equal just with copyright changes, but it was easier backport latest version from unstable, right? :)

Stefan Majewsky: Looking for Linux users near Dresden

System & Utilities

Linux-Info-Tag banner

Eight months ago, Josef Spillner posted a request on the planet for KDE users who want to staff the KDE booth at the Chemnitzer Linux-Tage*. This was one of my first KDE activities.

Today, I’m asking for KDE users near Dresden who want to help us with the Linux-Info-Tag Dresden**. We already have some staff for the KDE booth, but the event organisers are looking for helping hands: spread the word, care about furnishings and electrics or make sandwiches. More information is at www.linux-info-tag.de.

Celeste Paul (seele): Pilot Usability Testing Activity

System & Utilities

A while back, there was some discussion about how Ubuntu LoCos could get more involved in usability, such as through testing. So for the past few months, I’ve been talking with some Ubuntu LoCo members on how we can Get Things Done.

Usability testing is when you ask a study participant (who has similar characteristics as your target users) to complete a series of tasks using your product. The goal is to get feedback about the product so you can make it better. There are various types of testing protocols, but the one I use the most often as part of the design process is called an interrupted think aloud protocol (TAP). The participant is given a scenario and asked to complete a set of tasks. They may work quietly, but talk aloud if they like or ask questions. The moderator may or may not answer their questions in order to see how the participant attempts to solve the problem. The moderator may also interrupt the participant during the task scenario in order to discuss a particular choice or ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): RPM Fusion enters testing state

System & Utilities

fedora-logo-bubble
RPM Fusion, a merge of several former Fedora 3rd party repositories providing licence/patent problematic packages, has entered the public testing state. Fedora Rawhide users can now start using it, and the brave among the Fedora 9 and Fedora 8 users can also help testing.

RPM Fusion was announced more than a year ago and is the attempt to merge several of the many existing 3rd party repositories for Fedora (Dribble, Freshrpms,. livna). The idea of the common repository is to enhance the compatibility as well as avoid duplication - in the former time many packages were provided by more than one repository. The aim of the new RPM Fusion is however just the same as it was for the original repos: provide high quality packages of software which cannot be part of Fedora due to licence/patent problems.

There was a lot of development going on in the background, but RPM Fusion wasn’t ready for Fedora 9 unfortunately - there was just ...read more...

Wade Olson: Camp KDE 2009: First two sponsors announced

System & Utilities

One aspect of a new conference that may be under-appreciated is that of sponsorship.  Not only are we organically growing a conference identity over the first years, but we’re also working with new sponsors.

If you haven’t guessed, sponsors and donors that are interested in European conferences may be different than those with Central and South American conferences.

As such, I’m happy to announce that we (the Camp KDE organizers) have already come to agreements with two American companies to help our event.  As with other events, their donations will be used to secure facilities and subsidize the travel and lodging of attendees.

The upcoming Dot article on the event announcement will more formally address this topic, but I want to thank:

  • iXsystems:  You may know them because of their desktop initiatives at electronic chains, their server offerings, or their collaboration with the BSD family (notably our friends at PC-BSD).  If you’re in the Bay Area, you can meet both at the “meetBSD California’08″ conference coming up in ...read more...

Josef Spillner: How much service orientation do we need?

System & Utilities

The KIO framework has been with KDE since eternity, in some parts long before KDE 2 came out if I'm reading the meta information correctly. It provides us with many useful slaves, including one for HTTP and WebDAV. However, despite the hours of work which went into it, and despite the fact that it works very well for most of the time, we can do better. The software world beyond the desktop is making its functionality increasingly available through well-defined interfaces. We, on the other hand, need a good API to make the ubiquity of services a reality. If we provide one, more developers will consider our libraries as a good choice for their applications.

As one of these developers, the difficulty to access services with a REST interface has annoyed me for quite some time. At first I've thought that the mistake must be with me or my source code, but now that patches to KIO are available I know that it was simply impossible before. Now it is finally possible.

(To be fair, SOAP users ...read more...

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): Better width with Open Sources…

System & Utilities

While the Decoding table is being redone for KDE 4.2 there was a bug report pending about the old version of it, in that larger values do not fit into the witdh of the value fields.

The culprit code:

QFontMetrics metric( font() );
const int int16Width = metric.width( “88888888″ );
KLineEdit* mInt16Display = new KLineEdit( this );
mInt16Display->setFixedWidth( int16Width );

Bogus, as the width of the lineedit widget also includes the width of the frame plus some left and right margins, not just the width of the rendered string.

While this report was filed as a wish, I considered it still as a bug. And because it looked simple (and to keep the Zarro-Boogs state for Okteta :) ) I navigated my editor to the 4.1 branch… to find out, it wasn’t that simple to fix.

There is no such thing as a void QTreeView::resizeColumnToContents() for QLineEdit, or similar. So I tried QSize QStyle::sizeFromContents(), but the results ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Enter panic mode

System & Utilities I moved my main workstation this morning, to plug it into the power meter [[ note to yoyo: the advantage of a hardware power meter is it doesn't force me to use Linux. Similarly, I can measure the total power usage of my workspace by ganging things together on a power bar through the meter. ]] and to bung in another 2GB of RAM, and in doing so the data connector for one of my hard drives just snapped off. That's the little plastic 9 (?) pin L-shaped thingy. The one on my boot drive. OK, it's just a boot drive, one 15GB partition on an otherwise unused disk, but it's still mightily annoying, not to mention fatal to my startup routine. Enter panic mode.

Fortunately, the metal foil pins that were laminated on the plastic did not break off and were only bent a little. So I retrieved the snapped off bit of plastic and jiggled it into position next to the pins, then gently slid the cable-side connector (female) over the crumbling connector on the ...read more...

Fabrizio Montesi (fmontesi): Opening MetaService to Java: the MetaService-Java API layer.

System & Utilities Today, MetaService-java hit Jolie's SVN. You can find it in /trunk/support/metaservice-java. Basically, MetaService-java is a Java API abstraction layer for interacting with MetaService, so that you can use it as if it were a Java object.

This project was born for two reasons:
- it will be part of a solution for the integration of Java enterprise web applications with Service-Oriented Computing;
- it is a good example of how to implement an API abstraction layer to MetaService from an Object-oriented language, so its source code could be a useful reading for the Plasma::Service developers.

I'll let the code (and its comments) and a simple example speak for themselves. They're in Java, but they should be pretty easy to understand even for people non-proficient with it. Example follows.

MetaService metaService = new EmbeddedMetaService(); // Create a MetaService instance.

// Set up access to a SOAP Web Service.
MetaServiceChannel myWebService = metaService.addRedirection(
"MyWebService", // Resource name to assign
"socket://www.mywebservice.com:80/", // Service location
Value.create( "soap" ), // Protocol to use
Value.create( "My metadata" ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Local repository management and layout

System & Utilities One last entry on the topic of DVCS and repository management; I'm quite warming to the topic and the use of DVCS in general. So much so that I got a query on IRC the other day whether I was involved in the KDE transition to some other SCM system -- and if Mercurial had been picked for that.

Well, "no" and "no".

People who know all about this stuff are Thiago (for the Qt Software unit in Nokia) and the KDE Release Team and Dirk and Sebas. There's a mailing list scm-interest (I think it's called) for people who have a concrete dedication to improving the SCM for KDE. It's not just about being interested, or indeed about having an opinion. Those who code decide, and there's simply more engineering effort available for git than for anything else -- unless someone pulls open a can of Mercurial developers, administrators and enthusiasts.

So I guess eventually I'll have to become a git user as well, but right now I'll continue to ...read more...

Pradeepto Bhattacharya: Shubo Bijoya

System & Utilities

"Shubo Bijoya" to one and all. Last 4 days were some fun. This was the first Durga Pujo after my marriage so it was quite interesting. Its like the whole Bengali Community - "Milan Tirtha" - in your locality is watching you or such ;). Too much pressure, I must admit :P. Everybody wants to see the "notun bou" even after 10 months of being "notun" ;). "Sindoor Khela" is quite interesting. For the first time I volunteered to do "pori-beshon", liked it, loved the enthusiasm that surrounds the whole thing. Oh and "Sandhi Pujo" was around mid-night, attended it. Cool thing was a senior police officer attended it as well and he was quite down to earth and humble, sat along with others like a common man, actually refused any special treatment, and during the whole "mangal aarti" he was praying with his eyes closed. He even had gun carrying personal guards.
