Alex Merry: Open Hardware

System & Utilities

Being a hacker, the part of free and open-source software that really appeals to me is being able to tinker.  This is why I use Arch Linux rather than its more polished compatriots.  But I’m also interested in the way volunteer communities largely composed of hoobyists and enthusiasts can be leveraged to solve problems that are normally very expensive.

Even after only working in the software industry for a couple of months, I can already see how writing software is an expensive business for companies like Microsoft.  Developers’ time is not cheap, and it takes a lot of time to produce a product of any complexity.

But you only have to look at Linux or KDE or GNU to see the levels of complexity that can be reached by people working essentially for free.  Sure, there are people being paid to work on all of those areas, but even then the fruits of their labour are being given away for free.  They can’t even do what ...read more...

Tom Albers: Akonadi meeting: day 1

System & Utilities

Today I left from Culemborg (near Utrecht), to pickup Igor from Schiphol (Amsterdam) and pickup Bertjan in Breukelen (near Utrecht) to finally go to Essen in Germany to the LinuxHotel. We were the last to arrive there. The hacking location is great, just a big room with a lot of tables and a kitchen filled with free drinks and coffee. The big downside of this location is that you have to walk like 20 meters to get to the other building where the rooms are ;-)

The rooms are more than 5 stars rooms in my eyes. There is this plasma screen which is approximately twice the size of my own television, with a linux computer attached and also a picture frame with 'guten nacht' on it right now. Other highlights are nicely working showers, tux soap and a real tux sitting in the lazy chair. It is a shame we spend so little time in there.

This year, I've been to all relevant KDE meetings which were within reasonable car-reach, and I've noticed that I became a bit lazy ...read more...

Alex Merry: Music in the Air

System & Utilities

I upgraded the Archlinux AUR mysqle package (an easy way to satisfy the most annoying dependency for Amarok 2) to 5.0.70, from 5.0.60.  I’m not sure why it was 5.0.60 in the first place, since 5.0.68 was out when I made the build script.  I blame the fact that 0 looks quite similar to 8 on a console…

Having a new job has meant that my KDE involvement has taken a dip over the last couple of months.  I realised today that I’d completely missed the hard freeze to get MPD support into the Now Playing dataengine for Plasma.  It will be in for 4.3, I promise.  I might even have pluggable backends by then, and a shared library between Now Playing and Kopete.

Speaking of Now Playing, the applet needs some serious work.  It works, providing you have it on the desktop, but it’s not as pretty as it could be.  Trying to put it on the panel seems to quite successfully screw up Plasma.  Which is a pity, really, because ...read more...

Wade Olson: Camp KDE 2009: Travel subsidy announcement

System & Utilities

Another sponsor announcement, and it should be an expected one.  The KDE eV board will indeed be helping with travel subsidies for the Jamaica event.  It wouldn’t be very flattering if they declined, now would it?

What does this mean to you, the event attendee?  Limited subsidies will be available, with priority going to:

  • Presenters
  • BoF or developer sprint leaders
  • Organizers and core contributors

If you’re interested in attending and applying for travel cost reimbursement, please follow the steps listed on the KDE eV site.  This link will be added to the Camp KDE site, and we’ll note the sponsorship of the KDE eV.  Thanks to the board for their assistance in the success of this new conference.

Jaroslaw Staniek (js): Switching my context

System & Utilities

The confirmed rumour at least on the IRC has it that I am in process of switching my job after 5 years at OpenOffice Polska / OpenOffice Software. Much of that really interesting time was devoted to Kexi within KOffice and quite a bit to various aspects of KDE on Windows. The switch has been planned about one year ago so is largely gradual. These KDE-related tasks have been already my spare time activities since then. My will is to invest a lot there.

There are a couple of options I have now in Warsaw. Among them, there are the following types:

  • developer in a services company aimed at software design/development (entirely non-Qt, quite a bit of C++, a lot of Java)
  • a work for one of the main Nokia's rivals, as developer (either Symbian or Android API, so again: custom C++ or Java, and most probably entirely non-Qt)
  • freelancing, largely remote work on various projects, where in many cases I can use or propose C++/Qt or even KDE technologies; sometimes an overhead ...read more...

Seb Ruiz (sebr): Bugzilla email spam filtering

System & Utilities

If you’ve got a mailing list dedicated only to bugzilla traffic, you might find these rules useful to filter out any spam. Since the Subject field of these lists are so rigid, we can obviously tell which emails are spam.

Use the following rules in your mailman config:

Rule 1: Discard any emails flagged as spam

matches? ^X-Spam-Flag: YES
action: discard

Rule 2: Accept any emails which fit our [BUG 1234..] subject header

matches? ^Subject:.*[[bB][uU][gG]sd*].*
action: accept

Rule 3: Discard or hold the rest, they’re probably spam!

matches? ^Subject: *
action: {hold,discard}

Alexandra Leisse (troubalex): KOffice Web Concept

System & Utilities

KOffice Web Presence Strategy Thumbnail (click!)

Things are in the move it seems and I am still all about drafting concepts for a renewal of the KOffice web presence. We have been discussing this on IRC a bit and it seems that quite some people liked the ideas, so I chose to present them here to give others the opportunity to think about it and maybe reuse it or make smart™ suggestions. ;)

From simple to complex

My starting point was to find a solution to present KOffice independently without doubling maintenance work and spreading ressources even further on the net.

At the moment, everything KOffice is quite confusing: there is a terribly outdated (content wise) website that is pretty complicated to keep up to date with the use of SVN, a wiki that is hard to find and needs to be searched for everything and resources both on userbase and techbase. So ...read more...

Danny Kukawka: Linux Plumbers Conf: Follow-up

System & Utilities
Six weeks ago the Linux Plumbers Conference 2008 ended in Portland (OR). Yesterday I found the time to fill the "Plumbers Conference Attendee Survey". The survey enable all attendees to address their commendation, but also constructive criticism for a better conference in 2009.

Here some of my points:
  • It would be really nice to have a official IRC-channel for the conference next year. It would make it easy to get in touch with other attendees or to announce something.
  • As I already criticised about the Akademy 2008: I missed a list of the attendees, available while the conference, with some information about them (What are they working on? Email address, IRC nickname ...). It would make it much more easier to find the people you are interested in to e.g. discuss a issue/topic. Especially on a new conference with many new people.
  • I hope the room situation for the microconfs can get improved. In some rooms it was really hard to see the slides because you couldn't even see ...read more...

In short the best shipped KDE desktop yet (KDE 4.1.3 with many backports and patches, no KDE3 or even Gtk+ apps running by default, Will is heavily busy with NetworkManager-kde4 plasmoid) as well all other latest and greatest versions (like OpenOffice.org 3.0 and Gimp 2.6).

Martin Meredith: My Package of the Day: blueproximity

System & Utilities

So, yesterday, my new Bluetooth adapter arrived. I’ve been wanting one for a while so that I can quite quickly push new files to my phone (for ringtones, etc)

However, while playing with bluetooth (and trying to setup a bluetooth headset - which is the biggest headache EVER!) - I stumbled across a package called blueproximity.

The application allows you to use a bluetooth device as a proximity sensor.

Basically, it uses the bluetooth protocol to “ping” the bluetooth device, and then run commands when the signal strength gets low (or hich)

At the moment, I have it setup to do a couple of things, firstly, I have it set to lock/unlock my session, and switch my monitor on/off if I leave the range/enter the range. I’ve set this up so that the unlock is on entering the room, but the “lock” is only if I leave the house.

Secondly, I have a habit of leaving for work, and forgetting to disconnect from my server’s screen session (running irssi) - meaning that when I come back, the highlights don’t show ...read more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE/Qt California People Sightings!!

System & Utilities

I’m out in California this week (belated warning) again, WOOT! I got to spend another awesome weekend at the Google Summer of Code Mentor Summit. This year, Leo and I were the official KDE representatives, but Thiago, Simon, Ariya, and Olivier got to join in on the fun too. And then today and tomorrow are the Qt DevDays, where I finally got to meet blauzahl, greeneg, and hays, as well as catch up again with the Qt dudes and njaard. It’s a really, hectic, crazy week, trying to cram everything into it, and I’m tired as hell, but it’s been an awesome week thus far. Hopefully my body will hold off on the usual travelling sickness until I get home. =:/ Here’s some pics from the last few days…

Ian Geiser (geiseri): Order from Chaos

System & Utilities

I have been facinated with mind mapping now for about 3 years. I have been using it on a regular basis for trying to organize disjointed thoughts, make coherent sense out of brainstorming sessions, and lately for every day design documentation. For those of you not familiar with mindmaps check out the wikipedia link on the subject.

KDissert annoyed me at the time, and freemind was pretty slow. So a little over two years ago I started to play with Qt's graphics view and started a mind mapping toy. Its grown a bit over the last few months as I use it more and more every day at work.

So let me now introduce you to Flo.

Flo is a basic mind mapping utility that can be used to quickly organize brainstorms into hierarchical outlines. So far I have been able to use it on a daily basis. It has the ability to import freemind files and export Docbook, Wiki, or Text outlines. It also has an attempt at generation of PDF ...read more...

Leo Franchi (lfranchi): Amarok 2 on OS X, now with more sexy

System & Utilities Ever since I switched to the dark side and bought a macbook pro this spring, I've had slight trouble developing (and using) Amarok 2 and KDE4. Imagine my frustration as I spent a week cycling through all possible permutations of {VirtualBox, Fusion, Parallels} and {Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Mandriva} trying to get a development environment that didn't make my eyes bleed (or my computer choke).

Anyway, after approximately 7 months, I have been able to finally use Amarok as it was meant to be used: native on OS X!

How did I do this, you ask?

The KDE Mac Site

However, if you want to be able to build a collection (as I have in the screenshot above), you'll need to compile/install mysql manually (following instructions for MySqlE). But just out of the box, I got perfect audio, low CPU/memory usage.. and in general awesomeness.

In other news, I have locally switched Amarok from ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): (MD/DC USA) Signup for LoCo Ubuntu Usability Testing

System & Utilities

Hello DC/MD K/Ubuntu Locoers!

I hope you are all excited for tomorrow’s Intrepid Ibex release. We’ve put a lot of work in to it since last May and it promises to be the best K/Ubuntu release yet!

As many of you know, I have been organizing usability activities with the DC Loco. A few weeks ago, we ran a successful pilot on the Cleveland Park Library computers with a few participants.

I would like to invite anyone who is interested to bring a friend or family member to participate on Saturday November 8th. If you want, you can guide your friend or family member through the activity.

We are currently testing the Photo Experience. If you have a digital camera, feel free to bring it with you to the test.

The Cleveland Park Library is a hop, a skip, and a jump (about 2 blocks) from the Cleveland Park Metro station.

Testing sessions should only take about 30 minutes, so feel free to bring multiple friends and family or stop by on your way to the ...read more...

Tom Albers: RSIBreak beta5 + Junior Jobs + Akonadi Meeting

System & Utilities

I released RSIBreak beta 5 yesterday evening. I can not recall ever making 5 beta releases before in my life. Not for digiKam, kipi-plugins, libkipi, Mailody, Akonadi or RSIBreak. But the good news is that RSIBreak is now bugfree according to bugzilla and there is only one Junior Job present, which is good.

I would love to do things like a network sync so you can break together with your favorite colleague which also uses RSIBreak, but that seems to be more difficult than I thought. I browsed through some applications that uses the zeroconf KDE implementation. But it requires to much code for such a feature. I'll check again in a few years, maybe someone has made a more high level API around zeroconf. Yes, it is the lazy option, I know.

Maybe Junior Jobs in bugzilla need more explanation. I don't recall being on planetkde recently. Junior Jobs are jobs which are great bugs for people that want to start with KDE development and want to start with some easy to implement features. These ...read more...

it-s: Windows 7 and what army?

System & Utilities
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Prelude

Originally I had huge doubts about posting this here, however after seeing just how many people actually did make a note of the newest offering from our competitor I have changed my mind. So, without further adue, here she goes.

It's now, or never!

Firstly I would like you to take a look at one of the recent blog entries at www.bloomberg.com (which of course is one of the most revered financial analysis sites on the net).
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=aCwEYNK1HRgw&refer=home

Now, for those of you who are feeling lazy today, I will speed things up by providing a short summary of the aforementioned article.
All it says is that poor sales of Vista, coupled with general economic crisis have put our main competitor in a problematic financial situation, which they may not be able to solve, unless they manage to convince general public Windows 7 is DIFFERENT+BETTER.
To do that our competitor has allocated some '...hundreds of millions of dollars...' for marketing purposes (and totally wasted those on stupid and useless Seinfeld, and 'I am a ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): One round of upgrades

System & Utilities Today was a day of still waiting for my U45 SPARC builds to complete -- a single core is just not what it used to be, eh -- and shifting around disks and hardware in x86 platforms. I merged my aged-and-failing (best guess is that the motherboard is giving up, since it fails the POST memory test regularly and this morning took many reboots to get as far as the boot loader) FreeBSD machine with my OpenSolaris machine. That was a real case of "ok, so if this disk goes on that controller, then that makes four for the disk cabinet ..."

In passing I upgraded from Nevada 83 to 101; that's nearly 8 months of improvements in OpenSolaris. One reason for doing so is that we, the KDE4-Solaris team, need to make doubly sure that KDE4 is ready for OpenSolaris 2009.4 which comes out in about six months. That means KDE 4.2 goodness on the desktop, probably even KDE 4.2.1. We have a dual mission of making sure KDE4 works properly and in finding bugs in ...read more...

Akarsh Simha (kstar): akarshsimha

System & Utilities

This is (hopefully) my first post on Planet KDE! I didn’t know that we could have ourselves aggregated on Planet KDE with an svn commit until I “accidentally” stumbled upon the “Add your blog” link while adding Planet KDE to the RSSNOW plasmoid. I wish to introduce myself to Planet KDE through this post.

Yes, I hadn’t been in touch with the KDE world for long and only lurked in #kdeedu or posted on kstars-devel@kde.org, until I made it to the last 2 days of aKademy 2008 (thank you Bart, Kenny, Wendy, Pradeepto!), which I thoroughly enjoyed!

So who am I? Not getting philosophical, I’m called Akarsh Simha in the real world, kstar on IRC, and asimha on the SVN, and am a student pursuing the BTech programme in Engineering Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (”IITM”), India. I have currently finished two out of four years of my course and am running on the third. I plan to pursue a career in Theoretical Physics. Aaron Seigo (aseigo): When to backport?

System & Utilities I've been pondering the question of "when should we backport features?" It's fashionable right now to backport features in Plasma (and, I imagine, other applications) from the development track to stable releases and then include those stable releases plus the backported code from unstable branches to the general user base.

It has been shown that this leads to bugs since the features backported are not always completed or been properly QA'd (that's the meaning of a "development branch"). It also diminishes the goals of the upstream development team by changing the timing and combination of features provided (which can have morale diminishing effects of "stealing their thunder"). It also exposes users to unnecessary risk: what happens if we change how the configuration is stored and retrieved for any given feature? What happens if we change how the feature works, or even withdraw the feature from a release due to scheduling?

There is a reason we have release cycles, and backporting here and there circumvents all of those reasons. It's a bit ironic that some doing the backporting are ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): graphics week again

System & Utilities Just as a short note:
Today I fixed both a small bug in gwenview where the jpeg-thumbnails would crash gwenview on windows due to some strange issues and I build digikam and its kipi-plugins and made binary packages of it. So these can be used now (they reside in the 4.1.2 stable branch). Also in some days the 4.1.3 packages will have a whole lot of windows related bug fixes (I will blog about those later as all the people need to be mentioned). For now I just want you to point to digikam, find the bugs that are still within it (Gilles Caulier and I can try to fix the bugs, as he is brave enough to fight the demons of windows) and lets make it better and better.

Another thing I have to mention is that Torsten Rahn, Magnus Valle and Henry DeValence made some new quite awesome maps for Marble and none of them did blog about the results yet. This gives me the possibility to leak those pictures to all planetkde readers:

The Earth in Marble ...read more...
