Martin Meredith: One step closer to becoming a Debian Developer

System & Utilities

As you may or may not know, I’m in the New Maintainer Process for Debian, well, not long back, (a few days) I finished off the Tasks and Skills #2, and today my Application Manager (Steffen Joeris aka white) filed my AM Report, reccomending me as a Debian Developer.

You can find a copy of my AM Report here

Thanks to all those who’ve helped me along the way, including (but not limited to) Steffen (white), Francois (fmarier), Nelson (naoliv), Sune (pusling), Ana, Adam (infinity) and many many others :

Lucas Murray (Zarin): Almost nothing happened

System & Utilities

Not much happened this week in KWin, not much at all.

  • Oxygen team introduces their shadows, looks much better than the mocks so it definitely will be there by default on systems that support compositing.
  • Some more work on the shadow code, still extremely buggy though (Plasma apps, KRunner and logout dialogs all have the wrong shadows for example), and
  • GUI touch-ups to all KWin system settings and effect windows, they now look like they are meant for KDE 4 and not just some sloppy KDE 3 port.

The most important thing that happened this week was most likely the internal discussions about KWin in KDE 4.3. We spent around 3-5 hours talking about how we could add ARGB support to decorations without wasting large amounts of memory and bogging down the system with unneeded processing. As most of these were solved I can pretty much say with 95% certainty that KDE 4.3 will support KWin decorations with alpha transparencies.

Cyrille Berger: Fixed nightly build of KOffice RPMs

System & Utilities I finally managed to find time to fix the nightly build of OpenSuSE's RPM for KOffice. Well mostly, taking the spec from official beta package, tweaking it a little bit, and wait one hour between two changes to see the next error... Well anyway, if you have OpenSuSE (with KDE4.1's package from the build service) and want to test KOffice2, for instance for the bug krushing that is still going on, help yourself: Nightly builds.

Greg Meyer (oggb4mp3): Roktober Update from the Treasurer

System & Utilities

A few thoughts from the treasurer as Roktober draws to a close. I hope I haven’t posted this too late to have a positive impact on our overall fund drive. We are way off our goal for this year and I am not sure if that is the result of the uncertainty in the economy or people are just sick of us :-)

We have seen a huge fall-off in donations from the US, and I wonder whether it is because we expressed the goal in Euros and somehow offended our friends outside of Europe. Last year, because of the strength of the Euro against the other world currencies, we made a decision to express our goal in Euros because many of our expenses are in Euros. This is not because we are a Euro centric project. In fact, we have just as many US based devs as Europe, and we also have people in Australia, China and South America. We need support from around the world, not just Europe, so if ...read more...

Johan Thelin: Qt Centre Programming Contest 2008 - Finalists

System & Utilities So, the judging process has finally reached its first milestone - six finalists have been chosen. Those of you who visited FSCONS on Friday know them - to the rest of the world - the announcement is up now (yes - I know - lateish).

So, here they are, in no particular order, the finalists of this years contest:

xVideoServiceThief

“A simple, yet complete and easy to use application for downloading Flash movies from YouTube and similar sites and for converting them to other, more usable formats. It uses ffmpeg to do the conversion.”

QtWui

“Allows users to write AJAX-enabled web applications in C++. It features built-in HTTP server and the application code looks almost
like Qt app.”

Alexandra Leisse: Get ‘em all!

System & Utilities

Ladybug

As you may have noticed, KOffice is approching a 2.0 release. There is still some work to do and here’s where you come in.

It was already announced on the dot: Sunday (which is tomorrow) will be the first official KOffice Bug Day. Or Krush Mastery as Lemma called it. We’ll start at 7:00 UTC and gather on #kde-bugs to hunt down known bugs and and find some new in the latest release.

Let’s make KOffice 2 the best and coolest office suite out there in the world and help the developers by providing the best and most useful bugreports we can come up with and cheer them on!

If you can spare some time, don’t hesitate to join us. You don’t need any coding skills, a working install of KOffice 2.0 beta2 will do. But watch out, summertime ends tonight!

For more information please have a look at these articles on techbase:

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Bug day!

System & Utilities

I'm really looking forward to hanging out on #kde-bugs tomorrow. I'm not sure wether I'll skive off going to Church in the morning, but in the afternoon I'll be there for sure. The way the BugSquad prepares these things is nothing short of amazing in its thoroughness. Just look at the techbase pages that have been prepared:

For Krita, the goal will be on triaging bugs more than finding new bugs -- we've collected quite a few reports over the years, and frankly, I kind of lost my grip over the past year-and-a-half. And so much has changed in Krita, it's really important to go through all the bugs and check whether they'll still valid.

And, given that Krita is now cross-platform, everyone can join in:

So, join us in KOffice Bug Day and Krush!

Jason A. Donenfeld (zx2c4/jdonenfeld): Introducing ZX2C4 Music

System & Utilities

A few months ago I switched website hosts from Netfirms to Site5, because Site5 had a good deal for a plan with unlimited bandwidth and disk space. The first thing I did was upload my entire music collection.

To access all of my music remotely via any internet-connected web browser, I wrote ZX2C4 Music, which is password protected to avoid the law, but if you’d like to view the interface just for curiosity, send me an e-mail, and I’ll send you a password. It uses PHP/MySQL for managing the music, hashing each file with an sha1, TagLib for reading tags, and JavaScript/HTML as an interface:

Search queries are done with AJAX, and playing is done with Flash, if available; otherwise it defaults to browser plug-ins. Soon I should add HTML5’s element support. Since Flash only supports MP3, the php backend optionally transcodes non-mp3 songs on the fly ...read more...

Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): Python Plasmoids.

System & Utilities Simon, our worshippalicous python bindings hacker came by tonight for a bit of hacking (he lives across the river from here, about 20 minutes by bike on a well OSM-mapped route. I was keen to get the new Python scriptengine Sime has just landed in SVN running so I can play around with Plasmoids written in Python.
The steps to get Python Plasmoids on running on your desktop are (assuming you have KDE from SVN installed): installing python, sip and pyqt into your development environment; building kdebindings, then you can build the plasma scriptengine located in kdebase. There are building instructions on TechBase.
Developing Plasma applets (which is pretty much the only thing you can do with the scriptengine right now, since there aren't any applets written yet -- except for the obligatory clock) is pretty easy from that point. You need to have a .desktop file containing some metadata and you actual script (which can be how ever long you wanted, it lands in contents/code/main.py and other .py's). ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): e.V. update

System & Utilities I've been meaning to post a quick update with my KDE e.V. hat on for a couple weeks now. I'm in between conference calls, so I figure this is my chance. ;)

Since Akadamy '08, we've had 11 people join KDE e.V. as members. They were all just announced formally on the mailing list, and it's terrific to see the e.V. continue to grow and see the flow of new developers mature into a known contributors who decide to take a step into the foundation that supports so much of KDE. This is how the e.V. stays relevant to the project as it provides a bond of trust that the directions the e.V. takes will reflect the current needs of the project.

KDE e.V. has been ticking out the progress points since Akademy in other ways as well. While Akademy is our Big Event each year, we do a lot more than that. We of course help coordinate (e.g. via our mammoth booth box) and fund (travel and lodging mostly) attendance at events around the world (though primarily ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): scheduling

System & Utilities The decision was made to file off some remaining sharp edges from libplasma and then move it into kdelibs on November 1. However, I was thrown a few curve balls this week in the form of some schedule changes due to things maturing quicker than I expected.

Instead of being around the house working on Plasma next week, I'm going to be in London on Monday for meetings and then off to Finland until the end of the work week. That means that the two weeks I thought I'd have to spend with the team finalizing the couple remaining bits of libplasma API is cut short. As of today I'm busy doing meeting agendas, presentations, organizing the house for my departure and what not.

We did manage to get ToolTipManager reviewed and polished, though, thanks in no small part to our resident API reviewer (aka "API slave driver" ;) Kevin Ottens and there's some final work being done with Corona with regards to screen geometry management (more on that and Kephal in a later blog report), but ...read more...

Michael Leupold (lemma): KOfficeDay1: Krush mastery

System & Utilities As you might have read on the dot, we'll be having our first ever (?) KOffice Bug Day this Sunday the 26th. KOffice 2 has just reached its beta2 release and I for my part can't wait to check it out - user- as well as bug-wise :-)

As a special bonus BugSquad won't just triage bugs but also do some krushing.

Now as I heard that "Krushing is a confusing term" I thought I'd put together some information about it similar to what I wrote about The Art of Bug Triage. This time I did however put all of it on the accompanying techbase wiki page which I assembled in preparation of Sunday. So here I present you:(Please note that some parts of those pages are still subject to change.)

Dario Freddi (drf__): Mobile Devices fun

System & Utilities

Hello everyone,

Today I wanted to show you yet another project I’m hacking on. For all of you who own a portable media player or a portable device, and are frustrated about not having a good application to manage it, you’d better listen up :)

I gave it a quick name, DeviceSync, that probably makes a bit of confusion about what it really does: it is a tool that is able to transfer files and manage devices, like iPods, MTP players, and whatever.

But let me show you what’s really cool about it :)

The power of plugins will make it easy to manage even the most uncommon devices

DeviceSync is completely plugin based. This means that through a nice API, developers will just have to write a simple plugin for their device type, ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Howto: pre-compile KHelpCenter index

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
The KDE help center contains the handbooks of all KDE programs. Unfortunately, the index is compiled for each user which is sub-optimal in larger deployments.

The Problem

The KHelpCenter is the central place to access the KDE program handbooks. It also offers an option to index all these data to quickly search through them. However, currently this is done on a per-user base and is offered as a dialog once the KHelpCenter is started the first time.

In larger deployments with several users per machine/server or where you have central login servers you might not want your central server to do the same task again and again, for each new user. Therefore it makes sense to a) pre-compile the data and b) configure all your KDE users to access a central directory.

The Solution

The first task can be accomplished by starting the index process manually and let it write to a system-directory:

khc_docbookdig.pl --indexdir=$SYSTEMDIR --docpath=khelpcenter:kde_application_manuals --identifier=kde_application_manuals

Of course ...read more...

Frans Englich (FransE): XML to QObjects: QXmlToQObjectCreator

System & Utilities

Thank you, to all who attended Dev Days 2008 in Munich. For me it was really great to talk to so many users and hear about all the baffling projects that people pull off with Qt. And of course, to hear how people use and what people need, in terms of Qt’s XML support.

One customer told about how sub-classes of QObject are used for representing data, and are converted to such from XML. So, why not add a little helper class to Qt for this?

The class, which currently only is a research idea and missed the feature freeze for Qt 4.5, is called QXmlToQObjectCreator, and hopefully the documentation explains it all:

QXmlToQObjectCreator API Documentation

In other words, it’s a very simple class that builds a QObject tree corresponding to the output of QXmlQuery. The current sketched code is pasted here, for those interested.

In what way can this class be made more useful?

Peter Zhou (peterzl): OpenSource Event in Mainland China

System & Utilities

I went to Beijing last weekend for the three-days GNOME Asia event. I was there not only for promoting KDE, but also to promote open source concept in mainland China.
Open source communities in mainland China are not as active as the European communities, neither GNOME nor KDE has a very good growing environment there. I’d rather regard it as an open source in general event in mainland China instead of a GNOME Asia summit.

Around 300 attenders went to the talks and BoFs, about 90% of them were local Chinese. There were employees from SUN, Novel, Nokia, Motorola, Redhat, and some Chinese local companies. There were students and opensource community members, and most of them were using open source operating systems. Although there are half of the talks and BoFs were introducing pure open source concept, histories and current situations, it is rather understandable that Asia people, especially mainland Chinese need this kind of education. As I introduced the scripting concept in Plasma and Amarok, there were also speakers focused on development and improvement of the current projects. ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): LibriVox - take 2

System & Utilities

Some time ago I wrote about the LibriVox script in Amarok. It has been ported now and works like a charm.
For those who don’t know how the script came to be: Hanno Svoboda reported a bug on bugs.kde.org saying that he would like to have LibriVox integrated in Amarok. We asked if there is a nice API we can use and Hanno got in touch with the LibriVox developers to find out. After some emails and chats everything we needed was provided and Nikolaj sat down to code the script for the service in a very short time and it is now one of our nicest scripted services. All of this was just a matter of a few days and getting the right people to work together.
Hanno has been so kind to do a short video. Please enjoy and thanks to Hanno for the video and for bringing this wonderful service to our attention in the first place.

Due to lucky coincidences I got to spend one week in Greece together with my stepsister on a lovely island named Paros. It was great! Weather was nice enough to go swimming and get a sunburn. We got to see most of the island thanks to having rented a small car. Driving through the hills looking down on the water was fun. I can only recommend going to Paros in the last week of the tourist season like we did.
