Wade Olson: Camp KDE 2009: Another sponsor announced

System & Utilities

I just received the green light to announce another sponsor for the January Camp KDE event in Jamaica.  Who are they?

Hint: They engage in making, marketing, and selling integrated circuits for computing and communications industries worldwide. It offers microprocessor products, including multi-core processors, quad-core microprocessors, 32-bit architecture microprocessors, and 64-bit architecture microprocessors used in mobile and desktop computers, enterprise computer servers, and workstations. Oh, and they have over 80,000 employees.

Yes, it’s Intel.  Helio was kind enough to introduce me to Sulamita Garcia of the Intel Open Source Technology Center.  We spoke a while ago, and she just responded today with a very gracious offer.  I can’t wait to speak with her further about Intel’s planned participation in the event.

Thanks to Helio, Sulamita and Intel.  We’ll move to add Intel to the Camp KDE sponsors page. more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): KOffice Meeting Day 1

System & Utilities After I missed slangkamp at Berlin Hbf. due to my train being 40 minutes late on a 1 hour trip, I arrived at KDAB Berlin Office and started to look around a bit. After some minutes I got jaham and slangkamp interested into a special KOffice bug which only existed on windows: one of the color choosers simply was showing a black rectangle instead of painting the color gradient it should show. So we started to investigate this, first within KOffice (KoColorSlider) - it was no KOffice bug. Then in KDE (KSelector) and it was no KDE bug as well. But at least we could have worked around it in KSelector. But then again Jaham had the idea to look into the Qt sources - and there we found the bug. It was simple, 3 additional lines in qtgui4 and this was one of the points where you can definitely see why it is pretty important to have open source software: we could really fix the bug instead of working around it and hoping that the implementation will stay the more...

Alexandra Leisse (troubalex): 48 hours

System & Utilities

I’ll lose my virginity over this weekend.

I have arrived in Berlin this afternoon to attend the KOffice sprint. It’s kind of surprising, I never expected to do things like going to a developer meeting…

We have plans - and we have a schedule! - for what has to be done in respect of promotion and marketing for the upcoming  release and I am really curious about the results. So stay tuned for updates.

Cyrille Berger: KOffice Release Sprint Day - 1

System & Utilities Most of the KOffice developement team is meeting this week-end in Berlin, with some people from KDE's marketing group, in the KDAB office. The main goal of the meeting is to prepare the upcoming 2.0 release. We will have two tracks, one dedicated to technical aspect, like UI polishing, the state of applications, in one word, what is needed to get to the final release. And the second track is dedicated to marketing, prepare the crowd to the arrival of KOffice 2.0, prepare the message, define what to do with the website...

Since where information is delivered a few minutes after it has happen, here comes the first image of this meeting, since we are all geeks, the first things we do is connect ourself to the Matrix:

Brad Hards (bradh): Akonadi OpenChange (Exchange) status report

System & Utilities

The hard-working Danny Allen put out a new Commit Digest, and the resulting discussion on the Dot raised a few comments about Microsoft Exchange support in kdepim.

The short version is that it isn't going to make it for KDE 4.2. Maybe 4.3. Maybe not for 4.3 either. Sorry.

The longer version is that I had some real-life work intrude (I'm only a volunteer developer), and also did some work on something I really do plan to use (being the .snp generator for Okular). More recently I've also been working on the underlying libraries (OpenChange). Those are hopefully going to be of some use to some of you too. I do believe this stuff is important, but it isn't the most important thing to me all of the time (in particular, when I have to work, or travel, or catch up on some sleep).

When dealing with MS Exchange, people often suggest "just use IMAP". I don't think that mail is the real reason why people use Exchange and Outlook. There are lots of ways to more...

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): Oh no he didn't!

System & Utilities

Oh yes. He did. I hear it's typical at these little shindigs to give a short intro, do a little song and dance, and then wink at the ladies and watch them swoon. My name is Orville Bennett, and I'm a PC.
No, not really. I'm actually the guy doing Mac packages until RangerRick returns to take his rightful place atop the disk imaging throne pleasecomebackPLEASE.

I'll mostly be complaining about issues that come up while packages either Amarok or the rest of KDE. Did you know that kdepim from the 4.1 branch fails to compile on OS X? Tragic.

So yah, I'm in UR planetz, owning UR mac packages.

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): Okteta, making Change possible

System & Utilities

I have a dream… I see chars and values not separated in columns. After all they are all bytes, all made up by bits. I have a vision… I mean, I have a view, a new view type, and it will be implemented by me, B. O.:
Okteta now also has a row-based view

If you want to share this view, now go to View|View mode and vote for it, select Rows for a Change! Yes, you can (now).

Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): Embedded Linux

System & Utilities I'm on the train back home from ELCE (Embedded Linux Conference Europe) now. It was an interesting conference, not 100%, but quite free software-ish. Met a couple of nice people again: Adriaan (KDE + NLUUG), not quite surprisingly, Armijn (NLUUG +, but also Will (KDE + Suse) who I've did a bit of networkmanager hacking with in between the talks, Shane (FSFE, FTF hero), Oliver Gravert (Canonical), Valer (NLNet) and others. Feels somewhat like home (which I wouldn't have expected from a mobile / embedded conference in the first place). I gave a talk this morning, which I found quite interesting myself (that's at least one person). I've talked about how to get KDE on a mobile device, starting with an explanation of the software stack and how those parts related to platform independence, moving to technical challenges when turning a desktop system into a mobile system (covering things like screen resolution and pixel density, input mechanism and the more limited hardware you usually find on mobile and embedded devices). People seemed interested although the room was not exactly more...

Paul Adams: KDE4 On Small Devices: Analysing Power Consumption

System & Utilities

I have already mentioned that I'm doing a little research into KDE4 over LTSP and on small devices. This is a quick follow-up on the latter...

First things first: the equipment in question here is an Acer Aspire One (A150L) and it is running Debian Lenny and KDE 4.1.2 from I have also followed the advice given by "powertop" to decrease power consumption. Here is the result:

Power drain on my Aspire One

So on a full battery I'm being told the power drain is 12.9W leaving me 1.9 hours of portable processing fun. This seems about right - the Atom CPU draw 11.8W at peak and the screen draws 3W at peak. Not to mention CPU fan, wifi etc. But wait! I'm supposed to get 3 hours out of this thing (if the marketing is to be believed), Anecdotal evidence suggests this can be achieved.

The next thing "powertop" tells us is the processes which are not making most power-efficient use of the hardware... In more...

Andreas Aardal Hanssen (bibr): Welcome to Kinetic

System & Utilities

For the last year or so, several trolls have worked on ramping up Qt’s GUI capabilities by adding features and flexibility to our widget model, extending Qt with an animation framework, and investigating internal changes to our graphics system to meet the demand for highly animated GUIs (including excessive use of OpenGL). Some of the graphics improvements are merged into Qt 4.5, and available in snapshots. Today we’re sharing the rest of our code with you all, so you can see what’s going on.

* Labs project page:
* Git clone URL: git://

The name of this project is “Kinetic”. Our goal is to make it easier for you as a developer to create highly animated, high-performance GUIs, without the hassle of managing complex structures, timers, and easing curves, not to mention the large state graphs that all animated GUIs tend to be full of. We’re investigating building blocks that you need in order to make the simple things easy, and everything else possible. Some parts are C++, some parts are XML.

We’d more...

Casey Link (ramblurr): Amarok

System & Utilities

Earlier this summer I had noticed that National Public Radio (NPR) launched a brand new open API based on open source technologies. My initial reaction was at best skeptical. I assumed any sort of “API” released by a major media outlet would turn out to be nothing more than a few customizable RSS feeds. If the company was particularly progressive the RSS feeds might include full articles, rather than the neutered one-sentence teasers you find in all the big name’s syndicated content.

I couldn’t have been more mistaken. NPR’s API is no small potatoes. Just take a look at the comprehensive Query Generator to get an inkling of the types of complex queries you can create. Looking at the Query Generator also sheds some light on the content you can retrieve using the API. The more...

Martin Meredith: Data-Scraping Evilness

System & Utilities

So, I’m sure most of you are aware of Facebook - if not, where have you been?

Anyway, I run a site that promotes local events and gigs for a specific group of people, and a lot of the work for the site is in keeping it up to date - going and grabbing the info from various different websites, and plonking it into the format that’s used by the website. (which could consume hours)

This morning I noticed that I kept getting invites to events on Facebook that I should be adding to the website. I also noticed that the emails I got from Facebook were all in the same form.

Regex anyone?

preg_match(“/^Event: (.*)n.*”(.*)”nWhat: (.*)nHost: (.*)nStart Time: (.*)nEnd Time: (.*)nWhere: (.*)nnTo see more details and RSVP, follow the link below:n(.*)n/m”, $email, $matches);

So, yup, that’s what I did - I poked it all through a script, registered a new Facebook account, and now - through the magic of Regular Expressions, when someone invites the special user to an event, it automatically gets added to the site (through a bit of PHP + procmail magic! (with sanity checks!))

It was certainly interesting to more...

Fabrizio Montesi (fmontesi): Today, in JOLIE...

System & Utilities Build system
JOLIE's SVN contains now an ant-powered build system that compiles all the protocols, extensions and libraries and then is able to install the resulting runtime environment in your computer in a painless way. Painless like "just type sudo ant install in trunk/ and you're done".
The system is still beta-ish, but it's been tested by some people other than me. So now installing JOLIE from SVN is just:

svn co
sudo ant install

Warning: I still have to implement ant uninstall, so you'll have to delete /opt/jolie and /usr/local/bin/jolie by hand for uninstalling it.

If you want to control the install directories, just edit the buildconfig/ file, it's short and easy. Suggestions and reports on the build system topic are very welcome, so please tell me of anything comes up to your mind / bugs you find.

You'll notice a couple jars in the SVN, they're there because you probably don't have them in your system and they're usually not packaged by distros (e.g. Google Web Toolkit servlet jar, relaxngDatatype). It's Java, so more...

Fred Emmott (fred87): JsonQt now has QVariantMap -> JSON

System & Utilities

As of a few days ago, JsonQt can translate both ways between QVariantMap objects and JSON strings (see the tests for examples). Someone sent a link to QJson my way; after a quick look, here's a couple of advantages and disadvantages of each:

  • JsonQt doesn't depend on bison, Boost::Spirit, or anything except a compiler, cmake, and Qt - easier for windows builds, and means I don't have to worry about syntax changes between one version of $parserGenerator to the next.
  • QJson is written using bison - if bison's your thing, this can make it easier to fix errors.
  • QJson can handle the top-level JSON "thing" being an array, not an object - JsonQt requires it to be an object.
  • JsonQt provides both translation both ways

The last point I think is due to me misreading - though it's easy enough to change (make it so that the main public functions take/return QVariants instead of QVariantMaps, and if trying to parse as an object fails, try to parse as an array). more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Plasma everywhere

System & Utilities When I'm working on, or re-working, the KDE4 ports for (Open)Solaris, that leaves me without a desktop on the machine doing the re-compilation. While we as a team have a nice crunchy amd64 box and a good SPARC builder as well (since monday!) some things end up happening locally anyway. When I say "without a desktop" I mean "without a KDE4 desktop", since there's always CDE or twm or GNOME. It's like dwarf bread, that way.

At the end of the evening yesterday I had KDEbase-workspace compiled and was launching into the next four KDE SVN modules. For a lark I decided to run Plasma inside my GNOME session. On CDE this gets me a managed window but I was astounded that Plasma behaved flawlessly within a GNOME session. It also made my session 27% prettier (based on exit polls) in one go. So you can have a folderview in GNOME just fine; I think if I hack away the toolbox and introduce a kind of flat wallpaper it could fit right in.

But more...

Alejandro Wainzinger (xevix): Delete Multiple Files

System & Utilities Again, school keeps me busy and away from solving issues, but here's the most recent thing I've been working on.

(Yes, the dialog isn't at all final, I just put it there as a placeholder)

A few collections like the MP3Tunes service, and the local collection, are actually able to delete tracks already! They just... have no GUI to make it all happen. Devices like iPods and MTP devices can delete too, but only one track at a time (far from optimal). So I'm working to bring this ability to all collections alike. Actually getting this working isn't too hard, but making the code nice, understandable and maintainable is a bit of a trick. Luckily I've got a pretty good idea now of how I want more...

David Nolden: KDevelop4: Now with refactoring!

System & Utilities

When I started hacking on KDevelop4 one and a half years ago the goal was clear: Use the duchain architecture, together with my previous code-completion programming experience, to build excellent C++ code-completion in KDevelop4. At that point I thought the duchain was a good representation of the C++ code, and only the user-interface part was missing. I didn’t know that it was still far away from that.

So after some time, it showed that all these goals were very ambitious:
1. Code-completion
2. Intelligent code-highlighting
3. Make it efficient, make the editor usable while the parser is working(A hard task in its own)
4. Simple local refactoring
5. Real Project-wide quickopen
6. Project-wide refactoring

The problem is that the duchain is a very detailed and expensive to compute code-representation. Just a year ago, if you would have let KDevelop4 parse the whole KDevplatform project into duchain, you would have had at a memory-usage of about 3 GB, and it would have taken a sheer endless amount of time. During this year’s summer more...

Jakob Petsovits (jpetso): AutoBrace update

System & Utilities

Yeah, you might have read about the AutoBrace KTextEditor plugin which I introduced two weeks ago on this blog. You might even have tried it out, but it didn't work for you because it crashed under certain circumstances, it messed up pasted text, it broke undo functionality and it didn't do additional indentation although that would have been useful. You know who to blame for all of these shortcomings! (Right, that would be me.)

But fear not! I found ways to fix all of these, and it now works brilliantly and without a glitch. Unlike last time, I'm now even using the plugin myself. And on top of that, I even created an Oxygen icon (yay!) to display in the "Extensions" listing:

Now *this* makes you want to use Kate (or KDevelop) with AutoBrace just sooo badly, doesn't it? Heh, I knew it.

Paul Adams: KDE 4, Small Devices and LTSP

For reasons that will become clear later I am currently interested in KDE 4 performance under LTSP and KDE 4 on small form factor devices.

I will blog about this work later and detail all the various things that I come up against. But, for now, I would like to simply draw attention to how many of the issues I have encountered appear to have started in the same manner... An (incorrect) implicit assumption on behalf of the developers involved.....

Konqueror's Configuration Dialog in 4.1.2

This is a screenshot of Konqueror's configuration dialog in KDE 4.1.2 running on my Acer Aspire One. This awesome little machine has a 9 inch screen running at 1024x600. As you can see, some of the configuration options are off the bottom of the screen where I cannot get at them.

Later I will blog properly about my thoughts on KDE 4 on small devices (Asus EeePC, Acer Aspire One and Dell Inspiron Mini 9) and separately on KDE 4 over LTSP. The good news more...

Wade Olson: KDE Forum off to a quick start

On October 12, just a little over three weeks ago, the new KDE forum at was announced.  Is it being used?  From the board statistics:

Our members have made a total of 3,464 posts in 548 threads.
We currently have 2,112 members registered & 480 active users.

Not that I have any other forum launches to compare to, but that seems pretty robust to me.  Thanks again to the moderators, developers who got the board running and to MyBB - looks like a need being filled to me.  And hopefully this is just the beginning.

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): Amarok podcasting 2.0 and post-2.0 plans

System & Utilities Hey fellow developers and users,

In Juli 2007, at Akademy Glasgow I started implementing podcasting support in Amarok2. Since then I was sidetracked a little, as you may be aware.

The little time I did manage to spend designing and implementing was short and far from focused. So a lot of features are not finished or just plainly missing. The framework I created underneath suffered from the same lack of focus and is need of a good review. I'm aware there is probably some overdesign and some parts might be to complex. If you feel you can help in that area I suggest you take a look at extragear/multimedia/amarok/src/podcasts . Send questions, comments and suggestions to .

The 3rd beta from Amarok 2.0 is already out the door and podcasting support is still not finished. In order to make it I had to reduce some goals I had set for myself during those rainy summer days in Scotland. Here's the plan:

Amarok 2.0:
The focus ATM is on finishing more...

Ariya Hidayat: world fastest optical polarization tracking

System & Utilities

Once a while, somebody asked me about my dissertation. Since I am working in software industry these days, it is a bit awkward to mention my previous physics and electrical-engineering related work. Now the job becomes easier. I can point those curious guys to the following paper:

High-speed endless optical polarization stabilization using calibrated waveplates
and field-programmable gate array-based digital controller

This 8-page text is basically a condensed version of my dissertation, the 2.5 MB PDF file is available for download (free). It would appear in the upcoming Vol. 16, Issue 23 of Optics Express, one of the leading peer-reviewed journal in optics (impact factor last year: 3.709).

In a nutshell, the paper consists of two parts: optical retarder characterization and implementation of FPGA-based controller. The first part deals with modelling and estimation of characteristics of off-the-shelf lithium-niobate polarization transformers, then the characterization result is used to calibrate the respective retarders. It uses a new approach based more...

William Viana (Liw-): Still alive and some updates.

System & Utilities

It was some time since my last post. GSoC ended and then I had to take care of my real life for a while. But now I’m trying to get back and help Amarok developers by solving some easy bugs and polishing a little bit the context view.

Today I come with some nice stuff I’ve done recently. The first one is a nice user feedback by highlighting the context pages under the mouse in zoom out mode. Easy to implement and nice to have.

The other nice stuff is the current track showing the last tracks played when in stopped state.

Martin Meredith: Starting from scratch: RAID + LVM

System & Utilities

Ok, so working with RAID and LVM is… well… not easy.

I have three hard drives in this machine, all of different sizes, (160Gb, 200Gb, and 300Gb), and I’m gong to be setting these up so that I have a  RAID-5 made up of three 160Gb Partitions, (with LVM on top) a RAID-1 Partition of 40Gb (no LVM) and the rest split between boot, swap, and misc.

However, the ubuntu alternative CD doesn’t make this easy, and, one of my favourite annoyances is that once you configure RAID, you cannot make changes to the partitions on the disk where you have RAID partitions :( (hidden away in the middle of a block of text that people aren’t likely to read… I only spotted it on the 4th/5th attempt)

Getting RAID setup is fine, getting RAID+LVM has taken me… 6 attempts so far, and I think that I’ve managed to say the right prayers to the right gods this time… or maybe not…
