Danny Kukawka: HAL: support for linux leds kernel subsystem

System & Utilities
I've implemented HAL support for the linux kernel leds (light-emitting diode) subsystem some days ago. The new namespace provides these information for leds devices:
  • leds.device_name: The name of the related led device.
  • leds.colour: The colour of the LED. (e.g. green, orange)
  • leds.function: The function of the LED. (e.g. radio, power, standby, batt)
The new leds devices offer via a singleton addon also a DBus interface to set the brightness of the LED. It works the same way as e.g. the org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel interface by providing a GetBrightness() and a SetBrightness() method. The values for the brightness depends on the kernel driver and should be normally between 0 and 255 (0 normally deactivates the LED, any other value > 0 activates the LED again).

You can get the patches from my git repo [1] [2] [3].

Cyrille Berger: KOffice 2.0 Beta 4 ! Still time to come and help !

System & Utilities Today was the release of KOffice 2.0 Beta 4, the last beta for 2008, which close an other year without a major release of KOffice. The second in a row, but the last, but if you want 2.0 to happen quicker, and want to help, there is a lot of things you can do:

  • Testing, feeding the developers with bug reports, for this there are packages for the usual distributions: debian (in experimental), kubuntu (not yet online), opensuse (in the build service, either as beta or as nightly build), for more update information see beta4 release notes. If you feel like it you can follow the build instructions.

  • Coding, we won't repeat it enough, but we are very short on manpower, so if you feel bored, or interested, don't hesitate to join us (you can find some information on the junior jobs page)

  • Webmastering: prior to 2.0 release we want to revamp the KOffice 2.0 website, for this we are still looking for ...read more...

Roland Wolters (liquidat): Short Tip: import larger sets of ics files into kontact

System & Utilities

kde-logo-official
While migrating to Kontact it might come up that a large set of ics files have to be imported into Kontact. There is a GUI way to do that, but that involves a large number of clicks for each file. Easier is the command line way:

$ ls *.ics | xargs -n 1 konsolekalendar --file ~/.kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.ics --import

Another way is to copy all ics files to a directory. A new calendar can be created with this new directory which afterwards contains all the data from the ics files. This calendar can again be exported as one single ics files which can be easily imported everywhere.

Benjamin Meyer (icefox): File Encoding With KAudioCreator

System & Utilities In KAudioCreator there has been a long standing wish for the ability to encode wav files. Sense this is a task that KAudioCreator already does, it would seem like an easy thing to add right? Well a year later and a dozen ideas later I still am not too sure how to intigrate it into the interface. In CVS HEAD if you go File/Encode File it brings up a dialog that you can select a file to encode. I am not all that happy with this solution, but it seems the best at this time. So putting it out to everyone for some ideas on how this can be best implemented or if it should even be.

Paul Adams: The Daily Amarok Coding Tree - Redux

System & Utilities

So, yesterday I asked about how my graph of Amarok daily commits could be improved...

First prize goes to Nikolaj who suggested that I should somehow show how many times the individual leaf nodes were committed to. Below is my improved version of the graph; the leaf nodes are scaled according to how many commits they received (the larger the commit count, the larger the node).

Any other ideas? I know there's more out there!

Martin Meredith: Hacky HTML

System & Utilities

Ok, so working on a new site, I’ve realised that an image I’ve floated to the right of my text seems to be overlapping the items beneath it.

Ok, so, that’s obviously not what we want!!!!

Normally, I’d use clearfix for this, however, I have the issue that I will also be using a sidebar (at times) and well, clearfix will interfere with this:-

So, that’s obviously not something we want! - I had to find a nice way of doing this, without it interfering with everything else!

I thought about this, and thought I’d do a bit of voodoo with CSS and make this work!

Yay! It worked!

How’d I do this you may ask. Well, the containing div needed the following CSS (which also, quite niftily extends the height of the float if it’s the shorter ...read more...

Jakob Petsovits (jpetso): Projector fun

System & Utilities

It all started when I upgraded to the new Kubuntu 8.10, a.k.a. "Intrepid", which did a bunch of nice things to my laptop - most importantly, it resurrected my beloved suspend-to-RAM that went out of order in Hardy. I couldn't be more grateful for that. Intrepid even made the volume keys work... yay!

Of course, every Kubuntu update has its downsides as well. This time, the Wrath of Shuttleworth manifested as a series of interrelated X.org issues: stuttering videos (which played perfectly fine in Hardy), mouse cursor jumps once I keep the mouse quiet for a few seconds, and a curious lack of autoconfiguration for the VGA output - something that had mysteriously worked since the previous release, so I had not questioned it despite knowing that Xrandr 1.2 was not the most enthusiastically hyped area of KDE development known to mankind.

Not possessing or even requiring a projector or external monitor by myself, I was able to live with this for a month or so. But when I had to borrow a collegue's laptop for a university presentation last ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: Tinting through composition

System & Utilities

Another example that I showed in Developer Days was an alternative way to tint an image. Suppose you want to have a little feedback to the user when s/he puts the mouse on an icon, what you can do is to colorize the icon while the cursor is still on top of it. Changing the overall tone of the color of an image can be done in different ways. One obvious way is to convert every pixels from RGB to HSV, perform some manipulations on the hue and perhaps also saturation, then convert back the result to RGB, which will be the final color of those pixels. A rather different and less correct approach (though the result is still visually good) is to convert the image to grayscale and then overdraw a big rectangle with certain composition modes, check out my latest entry on Qt Labs Blogs exactly on that matter: Colorize an image via painter composition.

The included example can also take an image from the web, ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): KDE 4.2 Toolbars: Icons + Labels

System & Utilities

As mentioned back in the Kubuntu Intrepid Alpha 5 testing stage, one of the changes we made for the most recent release was adjusting the toolbar icon label and placement from being icon-only or label under icon to be label next to icon. The previously mentioned blog entry has more information on why.

This default change affects most applications, but not necessarily all. For example, Konqueror still has icons only, but Dolphin has icons + labels. Currently Kmail has icons + labels, but would probably be better if it was icons only. We came up with some recommendations in the Intrepid release which could be further refined for all of KDE.

We haven’t heard any comments about this change, so I’m assuming:

  • people like the change (great!)
  • no one has noticed the change (also good)
  • no one minds the change (good)
  • no one has been bothered enough by the change to complain (less than good but not bad)

It would be useful to have a way to detect small ...read more...

Anne-Marie Mahfouf (annma): Useful crash reports through bugs.kde.org

System & Utilities Triaging through plasma crash reports I see a lot of useless reports. If you paste a crash report and if you see many '(no debugging symbols found)' lines then you are not helping us. You need to install the debug packages from your distribution as explained in
http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

Also be sure this is not a distribution issue and really a KDE one (ask your distribution IRC channel and scan the forums) prior to post a bug report. When you know it is a KDE crash, please take some time to look at current reports and see if it was not already reported.

Please also note down the steps to reproduce your crash. If you upgraded your distribution and cannot load plasma, try a new user. If the new user works, add the plasma-appletsrc config file to the bug report as well as the plasmarc file (in $KDEHOME/share/config). If the new user does not work, please ask your distribution for help.
Same for all crashes with an existing config, please try a new user and ...read more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): Full blown kde-aware opale version

System & Utilities
KDE version of opale

KDE version of opale

Since the release of opale-0.9, I have mostly worked on improving the (optional) KDE integration. And now if KDE is available, opale will use things like : XML GUI, KFileDialog and specific menu entries (Switch application language, configure shortcuts/toolbars, KDE-aware recent files submenu,…).

While I was there, the Qt-only version now also has a ‘recent files’ dialog popping-up at the start if no file is given on the command line (my personal top-missing feature).

Now, some people noticed that I want to port Opale to the Mac. I have an old ibook lying here, but MacOS has died and I need to re-install it before trying qt/Mac (that I have never tested yet).

As an answer to your blog entry, Orville (I guess that’s your first name, right?):

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): KDE standard aboutbox is kind of close-minded

System & Utilities

Back in the days of kde3, while writing a KDE application, I encountered quite a big problem while trying to use the aboutbox stuff from KDE (that means kaboutdata and the now called kaboutapplicationdialog). I talked to some guys on #kde-devel, and I have been told that, yes, this will be changed for KDE4.

Now that I (mostly) use and (rarely) develop for KDE4, I have been hit again by the same problem. Before reporting to the bugtracking system of KDE, I would like to know what people think. Most importantly, do people outside of KDE proper do actually use this ?

Description of the problem

There is a field called  bugsEmailAddress in the constructor of KAboutData, which is used by KAboutApplicationDialog to decide what to display. Using this field, something like

\"Please report bugs to <a href=\"mailto:%1\">%2</a>.n\"

will be used to display the link in the about box. What does it mean ? First, it means that it is not possible to have a link to a web bug tracker. ...read more...

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): ADD much? (or, how I compiled Opale on the Mac and looked stupid doing it)

System & Utilities

So I'm cruisin' the planet looking for Alex's generous offer after NightRose pointed me to it, and my rss aggregator just happens to be on a post with some pretty pictures. I'm a sucker for pictures. They get me right there. Everytime. I won't comment on the UI in the pictures 'cause then I'd have to say something mean, and I'm doing so well today.

But anyway at the end of it all I notice this little gem in the roadmap:

macintosh version

I was intrigued. What's more, the sources for this thing was only 157.3 KB. I couldn't resist. A few seconds later I was greeted with a Qt4 version of opale.

Opale Main Window
Opale Open Dialog
Opale Toolbar Reorganized

Frank Karlitschek (karli): free job board, redesign and open collaboration services.

System & Utilities
At the end of October we launched a free job board on the openDesktop.org websites.

I know quite a few people who found a nice full time or freelance job by showing their work on our websites. I also know a few free software projects and companies who are looking for new projects members or employees.

So I had the idea to build a job board where companies, projects, developers and artist can get in contact. Specialized for open source and IT jobs.

Unlike other job boards the openDesktop.org job board is completely free - both to those listing jobs and those looking for jobs. We will finance the hosting with advertising and sponsorships.

The job board is visible on all websites in the network, meaning a job listed on one, is automatically and immediately displayed on all the other sites in the network.

The main feature of the job board is its simplicity - jobs are listed with a few clicks and jobseekers search the available jobs per country and category. All registered users can publish their ...read more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE 4.2 is flat out going to rock

System & Utilities

That’s my prediction. Of course, the truth of the matter is that KDE 4.2 (trunk) flat out rocks today. Seriously. I have never been more excited about the Linux desktop than I am right now. And this, 2+ months out from our actual KDE 4.2 release. I’ve been running OpenSUSE 11 for a couple of months now, and thanks to the awesome nightly/weekly KDE 4.2/trunk packages, I’m thoroughly enjoying pretty-darned-bleeding-edge 4.2/trunk packages, but with half the carbs, and I am loving what I’m seeing! Recent KMail improvements are awesome. Plasma is getting more and more bullet-proof and gorgeous by the week. Kwin just keeps getting more and more stable and purty. Kdevelop4 and Kate are getting some SERIOUSLY cool enhancements and RAD-helping juju. Even our lowly KPilot has been getting some bugzilla lovin’ from yours truly lately, and I’m about half-way through porting the old memofile conduit to our groovy base conduit syncing goodness. Whereas a few months ago, I just could not use KDE4 as my main work environment (gots ta make a living too, don’tcha know!), I have ...read more...

David Nolden: C++ Code Completion rethought: KDevelop4 in action

System & Utilities

From all the discussions I have had, I have learnt that there is two different types of users for Code Completion. For the first type, the code-completion is only there to speed up their typing. They think they don’t need to know what kind of items they are actually dealing with, because they think they know the library they’re working with. Then there is the second type: They want to use code-completion as a kind of inline documentation, for checking along the way that what they’re writing is actually correct, and additionally to speed up their writing.

I count myself to the second group. I want all the useful information I can get. If I’m not interested, I can still ignore it, but in most cases even if you’re knowing exactly what you’re working with, it’s still a better feeling to not only assume that what you’re writing is correct, but to know and see it.

KDevelop4 code-completion is here to fulfill these extended needs. Right when I started working on it more than a year ago, ...read more...
