Anne-Marie Mahfouf (annma): Useful crash reports through bugs.kde.org

System & Utilities Triaging through plasma crash reports I see a lot of useless reports. If you paste a crash report and if you see many '(no debugging symbols found)' lines then you are not helping us. You need to install the debug packages from your distribution as explained in
http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

Also be sure this is not a distribution issue and really a KDE one (ask your distribution IRC channel and scan the forums) prior to post a bug report. When you know it is a KDE crash, please take some time to look at current reports and see if it was not already reported.

Please also note down the steps to reproduce your crash. If you upgraded your distribution and cannot load plasma, try a new user. If the new user works, add the plasma-appletsrc config file to the bug report as well as the plasmarc file (in $KDEHOME/share/config). If the new user does not work, please ask your distribution for help.
Same for all crashes with an existing config, please try a new user and ...read more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): Full blown kde-aware opale version

System & Utilities
KDE version of opale

KDE version of opale

Since the release of opale-0.9, I have mostly worked on improving the (optional) KDE integration. And now if KDE is available, opale will use things like : XML GUI, KFileDialog and specific menu entries (Switch application language, configure shortcuts/toolbars, KDE-aware recent files submenu,…).

While I was there, the Qt-only version now also has a ‘recent files’ dialog popping-up at the start if no file is given on the command line (my personal top-missing feature).

Now, some people noticed that I want to port Opale to the Mac. I have an old ibook lying here, but MacOS has died and I need to re-install it before trying qt/Mac (that I have never tested yet).

As an answer to your blog entry, Orville (I guess that’s your first name, right?):

  • The kde version is now really finished, please try if you want.
  • I guess there’s no menu on the ...read more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): KDE standard aboutbox is kind of close-minded

System & Utilities

Back in the days of kde3, while writing a KDE application, I encountered quite a big problem while trying to use the aboutbox stuff from KDE (that means kaboutdata and the now called kaboutapplicationdialog). I talked to some guys on #kde-devel, and I have been told that, yes, this will be changed for KDE4.

Now that I (mostly) use and (rarely) develop for KDE4, I have been hit again by the same problem. Before reporting to the bugtracking system of KDE, I would like to know what people think. Most importantly, do people outside of KDE proper do actually use this ?

Description of the problem

There is a field called  bugsEmailAddress in the constructor of KAboutData, which is used by KAboutApplicationDialog to decide what to display. Using this field, something like

\"Please report bugs to <a href=\"mailto:%1\">%2</a>.n\"

will be used to display the link in the about box. What does it mean ? First, it means that it is not possible to have a link to a web bug tracker. ...read more...

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): ADD much? (or, how I compiled Opale on the Mac and looked stupid doing it)

System & Utilities

So I'm cruisin' the planet looking for Alex's generous offer after NightRose pointed me to it, and my rss aggregator just happens to be on a post with some pretty pictures. I'm a sucker for pictures. They get me right there. Everytime. I won't comment on the UI in the pictures 'cause then I'd have to say something mean, and I'm doing so well today.

But anyway at the end of it all I notice this little gem in the roadmap:

macintosh version

I was intrigued. What's more, the sources for this thing was only 157.3 KB. I couldn't resist. A few seconds later I was greeted with a Qt4 version of opale.

Opale Main Window
Opale Open Dialog
Opale Toolbar Reorganized

I would've tried the KDE4 version but the compile failed. And then I deleted my build env accidentally while trying to figure out why. *sigh*. Hate it when ...read more...

Jeremy Whiting (jpwhiting): wow, KMail

System & Utilities Ivan already blogged about it, but I have to join in the festivities, KMail's new interface (using Qt4's model/view framework) totally rocks, it's so awesome and useful, and much faster than before (I use imap, so maybe that's part of it?) It's stuff like this that makes me want to get out there and code, code, code, and make kde totally rock as it already does, but even more so =) Good job guys.

Frank Karlitschek (karli): free job board, redesign and open collaboration services.

System & Utilities
At the end of October we launched a free job board on the openDesktop.org websites.

I know quite a few people who found a nice full time or freelance job by showing their work on our websites. I also know a few free software projects and companies who are looking for new projects members or employees.

So I had the idea to build a job board where companies, projects, developers and artist can get in contact. Specialized for open source and IT jobs.

Unlike other job boards the openDesktop.org job board is completely free - both to those listing jobs and those looking for jobs. We will finance the hosting with advertising and sponsorships.

The job board is visible on all websites in the network, meaning a job listed on one, is automatically and immediately displayed on all the other sites in the network.

The main feature of the job board is its simplicity - jobs are listed with a few clicks and jobseekers search the available jobs per country and category. All registered users can publish their ...read more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): KDE 4.2 is flat out going to rock

System & Utilities

That’s my prediction. Of course, the truth of the matter is that KDE 4.2 (trunk) flat out rocks today. Seriously. I have never been more excited about the Linux desktop than I am right now. And this, 2+ months out from our actual KDE 4.2 release. I’ve been running OpenSUSE 11 for a couple of months now, and thanks to the awesome nightly/weekly KDE 4.2/trunk packages, I’m thoroughly enjoying pretty-darned-bleeding-edge 4.2/trunk packages, but with half the carbs, and I am loving what I’m seeing! Recent KMail improvements are awesome. Plasma is getting more and more bullet-proof and gorgeous by the week. Kwin just keeps getting more and more stable and purty. Kdevelop4 and Kate are getting some SERIOUSLY cool enhancements and RAD-helping juju. Even our lowly KPilot has been getting some bugzilla lovin’ from yours truly lately, and I’m about half-way through porting the old memofile conduit to our groovy base conduit syncing goodness. Whereas a few months ago, I just could not use KDE4 as my main work environment (gots ta make a living too, don’tcha know!), I have ...read more...

David Nolden: C++ Code Completion rethought: KDevelop4 in action

System & Utilities

From all the discussions I have had, I have learnt that there is two different types of users for Code Completion. For the first type, the code-completion is only there to speed up their typing. They think they don’t need to know what kind of items they are actually dealing with, because they think they know the library they’re working with. Then there is the second type: They want to use code-completion as a kind of inline documentation, for checking along the way that what they’re writing is actually correct, and additionally to speed up their writing.

I count myself to the second group. I want all the useful information I can get. If I’m not interested, I can still ignore it, but in most cases even if you’re knowing exactly what you’re working with, it’s still a better feeling to not only assume that what you’re writing is correct, but to know and see it.

KDevelop4 code-completion is here to fulfill these extended needs. Right when I started working on it more than a year ago, ...read more...

Richard Johnson (nixternal): A night at the museum

System & Utilities

During our company meeting today at Cleversafe, I was informed that a client, Museum TV, went live with our products. After taking a look at the website this evening, I noticed right up top on their website the “Powered by Cleversafe” image. That totally rocks! Congratulations to everyone at Cleversafe for kickin’ some arse and takin’ some names. Open Source rocks! Or as Jorge would say, “AWESOME!

With that said, we are looking at rolling out some open source goodness in the next few months. My buddies John and Wesley are working on getting the Cleversafe Open Source stuff up and rocking and starting a community of our own. I look forward to lending those guys a hand as they go forward!

On another front, tomorrow morning I will be heading to Michigan for Veteran’s day to do a little hanging out and then head on over to do a presentation on Kubuntu and KDE for ...read more...

Lubos Lunak (Seli): KDE compositing in openSUSE11.1

System & Utilities

As you might have noticed, KDE 4.1.3 has been released, codename "Change" (in line with other C- codenames recently, as a kind of a joke on all those people who fail to see that still writing comments with overuse of K after 10 years of KDE's existence can only be a sign of brain damage). Not many changes in KWin there though, the changelog part for KWin has just one change worth mentioning. But that is not the case for users of the openSUSE KDE:KDE4:Factory:Desktop packages, which are the packages that will be also used for openSUSE 11.1. This is because they include a special KWin branch, which contains both backports of various new features from other KWin developers from SVN trunk (Lucas' blog keeps track of many of those) that cannot be backported to the 4.1 branch by KDE rules but should be stable and safe enough, and new features developed specially for the needs of openSUSE11.1/SLED11.

The most prominent of these is probably ...read more...

Andi Clemens (aclemens): New kipi-plugin: Automatically remove red-eyes (in batch mode)

System & Utilities

Some years ago, we had an addition to our family and I took a lot of photos in that time. During the months I had taken nearly 2000 images of the newborn, but most of them had red-eyes on it.
This happens quite a lot with little children since their pupils don't close that fast and the light of the camera flash is reflected by the eye.

It always annoyed me to remove the red-eyes by hand, although most image software can do this with a single click in the defective image region. One day I had to correct hundreds of images to
sent them to a printing service, and that was the day I decided that I need something that can remove red-eyes all by itself.

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): Anatomy of a standalone KDE Mac package

System & Utilities

Allow me to start off by stating that there is no such thing. The standalone package is a myth which we (or at least I) aspire to here in KDE/Mac land. Installation of KDE software is wholly geared towards non-proprietary *nix platforms. Whilst the I'm a PC crowd might be willing to overlook the inconvenience of installing 1 GB of tangentially related packages to get that one program they desire, members of the Cult-of-Mac are far less forgiving. This leaves us, i.e. me, in the unenviable position of trying to tease out what is necessary for an app, from what is not, and trying to package it all together. Most of the time this results in less than stellar, um, results. Let's discuss why this is, for the time being, necessarily so.

A KDE application requires kdelibs, in itself a misnomer as it does not only contain libraries. One need look no further than kdelibs' bin directory to see how true this is.

Alexandra Leisse (troubalex): KOffice Sprint

System & Utilities

This sprint turns out to have been pretty productive. The marketing team (Inge, Jos, Sebas and me) has managed to get all topics covered and now has a finished marketing strategy. I even introduced everybody to the idea of a social stream of all developers involved and people started playing with our demo (thanks to Dirk Olbertz for setting that up!).

Half of the marketing team thinking hard

Those developers who have already left apparently did so with a good mood. They worked hard during this two days at the KDAB office. It didn’t even distract them that the office is right in the middle of a huge variety of restaurants, pubs and cocktail bars. There was a lot of more or less quiet hacking going on and I observed some vivid discussions about not so common topics.

And of course I learnt some new things like doing a SWOT analysis, that it makes sense to arrive well rested and that wikis can look surprisingly pretty.

Cyrille Berger: KOffice Release Sprint Day 2

System & Utilities Yesterday evening, we tried to go to a restaurant, but unfortunately google maps indicates the restaurant in the opposite direction from the KDAB Office, I must say this is not the first time something like this has happen to me (that's one of the reasons I refuse to use it, and rely on more ancient technologies, wether it is real physical maps, or website that have work on the subject for a longer time, and which are probably not as focused on hypeness and coolness as google). But finally, thanks to Patrick's hability to read maps (I guess it's useful to have a marble developers with you), we were able to reach it, which allowed Sebas to try to feed Alexandra:

Today is the last day of the KOffice meeting.

wallpaper on the screensaver (also, kmail++)

System & Utilities

so, my nice shiny new laptop doesn’t do composite atm. that means that all semester I’ve been hacking on plasma-overlay with a solid black background. that much black gets annoying after a while.

coincidentally, my lack of composite began not long after plasma’s wallpaper plugins hit trunk. :) sometimes I even caught a glimpse of wallpaper automagically loading before the blackness was drawn. I just didn’t have time to do anything about it.

well, today I finally found the time to unbreak the screensaver containment’s settings dialog, and this was the perfect moment to bring in wallpaper configuation too. :) surprisingly it was quite easy; I copied some code from hte desktop settings dialog, replaced the theme and containment stuff with my own config widgets, and I had happy magical wallpaper :)

the transparency stuff there doesn’t actually *do* anything yet; I’m too tired to hook that back up now. it’s also not going to look like that when composite is disabled, because 90% of that ...read more...

Then our four marketing gurou went into an isolated rooms to prepare the magic recipes for the message of the next release.

Since Ellen from the usability group was here, and since we had a lot of things to discuss about user interraction, we spend most of the day going applications after applications, with a strong focus on our dockers, and our tools. We found a lot of small issues, we did find a few solutions that are going to be implemented, mostly dockers reorganisation.

Thomas trying to crash KWord. But obviously he is not good at that !

All in all I found it was positive, sure there are many annoying issues, but it seems we are on the right track for user interaction. Which means ...read more...

Kevin Krammer: Nov. 9th - KDE PIM Bug Triaging Day

System & Utilities

The KDE BugSquash team is holding another testing and bug triaging day tomorrow, Sunday 9th of November, to help maintain and improve the quality of KDE PIM applications.

Especially versatile applications like KMail and KOrganizer can potentially be tested numerous times by its developers without finding any issues because it requires a certain workflow or data set to trigger them.
Therefore help by as many volunteers as possible is hugely improving the situation, because every person will have different goals, preferences on how to do things (e.g. mouse v.s. keyboard), data sources, amount of data, etc.

If you are interested and have some time tomorrow you'd like to donate to KDE, see the BugSquad's information page.

Jos Poortvliet: KOffice sprint 2008

System & Utilities The KOffice team will have a meeting this weekend in the KDAB offices in Berlin. Last year, I was unable to attend, but this year - I'm there again. And looking forward to it. I'm writing this blog in the train, so forgive occasional spelling mistakes, btw. The German country can be distracting ;-)

There seem to be some big plans. Not just in the technical area, like two years ago when KOffice was busily working on infrastructural tasks. This year, a first release of the 'new stuff' is imminent, so the focus has been moved to polishing the release and discussing the marketing surrounding it. As usual I will spend time on daily reports, but I will also join the marketing discussions and work on them. As there are more Marketing dudes & dudettes attending, we'll also be discussing the marketing for KDE in general - and cool stuff is happening on that front.

Wade Olson: Camp KDE 2009: Another sponsor announced

System & Utilities

I just received the green light to announce another sponsor for the January Camp KDE event in Jamaica.  Who are they?

Hint: They engage in making, marketing, and selling integrated circuits for computing and communications industries worldwide. It offers microprocessor products, including multi-core processors, quad-core microprocessors, 32-bit architecture microprocessors, and 64-bit architecture microprocessors used in mobile and desktop computers, enterprise computer servers, and workstations. Oh, and they have over 80,000 employees.

Yes, it’s Intel.  Helio was kind enough to introduce me to Sulamita Garcia of the Intel Open Source Technology Center.  We spoke a while ago, and she just responded today with a very gracious offer.  I can’t wait to speak with her further about Intel’s planned participation in the event.

Thanks to Helio, Sulamita and Intel.  We’ll move to add Intel to the Camp KDE sponsors page.

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): KOffice Meeting Day 1

System & Utilities After I missed slangkamp at Berlin Hbf. due to my train being 40 minutes late on a 1 hour trip, I arrived at KDAB Berlin Office and started to look around a bit. After some minutes I got jaham and slangkamp interested into a special KOffice bug which only existed on windows: one of the color choosers simply was showing a black rectangle instead of painting the color gradient it should show. So we started to investigate this, first within KOffice (KoColorSlider) - it was no KOffice bug. Then in KDE (KSelector) and it was no KDE bug as well. But at least we could have worked around it in KSelector. But then again Jaham had the idea to look into the Qt sources - and there we found the bug. It was simple, 3 additional lines in qtgui4 and this was one of the points where you can definitely see why it is pretty important to have open source software: we could really fix the bug instead of working around it and hoping that the implementation will stay the ...read more...
