Ariya Hidayat: oh, Clifford

System & Utilities

"You could not live without quaternion, could you?", so was the impression of my advisor.

William Hamilton and William Clifford are my heroes. I fell in love with quaternion some time ago and used it with passion in my dissertation (check the summary). Those who had done extensive polarization analysis using matrix and quaternion would come to the usual conclusion: for this context, quaternion and polarization analysis is a marriage made in heaven.

Now I realize that few days left until 2008 is gone. This would mark my biggest failure for this year. Sadly, I fail (again) to learn Clifford algebra in depth.

Celeste Paul (seele): Usability as a Lucrative Career Choice

System & Utilities

For the second year in a row (here is is in 2008), the US News & World Report has named being a usability specialist as one of the top career choices for 2009. It’s amazing and gratifying how much more software companies are recognizing usability as a necessary part of the design/development process compared to 10 or even just 5 years ago. Go good design!

Johan Thelin: It is all about the environment

System & Utilities I've just downloaded Qt 4.5 beta 1 and started playing with it. One thing that I've run into a couple of times now are environment variables. Their usage is quite sparsely documented, and can really prove to be useful. So, to have an excuse to look around in the source, I greped a bit.

grep getenv -r src/ | grep cpp: | grep -o ""[A-Z_0-9]*"" | sed 's/"//g'

The X11 version gives 83 hits, while Qt for Embedded Linux (tp1) gives 101. Mergin the two gives 108 unique strings. The difference between these two is fun to look at, but lets start with the more commonly used version: X11.

The variables BROWSER and DEFAULT_BROWSER are used from the QDesktopServices class. The XDG_CACHE_HOME, XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_DATA_HOME are also used by the same class. These variables are all specified in the XDG Base Directory Specification from freedesktop.

QApplication uses a number of environment variables. First, a whole range of variables regarding sessions and desktop ids: DESKTOP_SESSION, DESKTOP_STARTUP_ID, GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID and ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): I didn't know that Roop and Girish had a blog, too

System & Utilities

But here it is, and shows a nice picture of the app we've been building together. At the same time Nine's Hyves blog about the photouploader was replaced by a more official, but slightly less accurate blog by one of the Hyves founders. It gets downloaded quite a lot, which adds to the general feeling of having done a good job that this Gang of Four share.

Meanwhile, we are learning about this cross-platform binary release business. Apparently our linux version, which has always been perfectly anti-aliased on our machines, suddenly shed its anti-aliased font rendering on Thomas Zander's computer. And the sound, which works on Ubuntu, doesn't work on OpenSUSE. There's only one real solution, I'm afraid: making it GPL and getting our users to compile it for themselves :-).

And today? I'm giving Qt 4.5 a try and taking a look at the Qt Creator source code. It's pretty interesting to see the code of a big Qt application that's not part of Qt or KDE, and it makes me think ...read more...

Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): KDE 2008 fly-by.

System & Utilities The beginning of this year in KDE was marked with the tagging and release of KDE 4.0, followed up by the release event in Mountain View. KDE 4.0 has marked for the KDE community a stable base to build a kick-ass desktop and applications on. Over the past year, we see this effort paying off. Applications such as Dolphin, Gwenview and Okular are mature tools, powerful and userfriendly at the same time, speaking for the KDE4. With KDEnlive and Amarok 2.0 as their first KDE4 version, we see the more complex applications coming up. On the workspace side, new UI technology has matured, KWin's compositing and Plasma give you a very smooth ride as well.

The development platform is paying off, it proves to be a very extensible and future-proof platform, more and more applications are becoming available on Windows and Mac, KDE on OpenSolaris is getting closer to inclusion in the distribution, and we've seen KDE already available on FreeBSD. New applications written in Python have entered KDE, and scripting support for many applications is becoming available ...read more...

Sam Duff (Socceroos): Evangelism - sort of.

System & Utilities Evangelism, for Christians, could be described as sharing a great secret with someone - sharing with others the hope that lies within you. Not forcing it down their throat - but, through your words and actions sharing, encouraging and enlightening someone about something you truly believe.

Well, this isn't a story about Christian evangelism, but GNU/Linux. Hahaha, some of my viewers are rolling their eyes already - yeah, you Zac.

I was recharging my laptop batteries in the camp kitchen of the camp site we were staying in. A couple from Peru were there and were interested in how I was getting internet access (I was browsing Slashdot at the time). I then excitedly described how all I had to do was plug in my mobile phone into the computer and that Ubuntu Linux then automatically configured it to work.

They thought that was very cool. I felt cool anyway. =D

A while later (I was still browsing the net) the girl asked me was operating system I was using - she loved the default Ubuntu ...read more...

David Nolden: C++ Template Support in KDevelop4: Another Milestone

System & Utilities

Templates are one of the extremely powerful features of C++ that set it apart from most other languages. You can do most everything with them, from extremly complicated compile-time meta-programming like binary self-balanced trees, down to simple shared pointers or generic container classes.

When I switched to Linux a few years ago, I found KDevelop3 and liked it. However I noticed that it didn’t support code-completion for even the simplest C++ templates like for example a reference-counter pointer. That was my entry into KDevelop development. I implemented template support in KDevelop3 that had most of the needed features, and worked quite well when the needed libraries were processed. However the quality it could reach had some upper bounds, since there was no powerful backing structure like the DUChain, but rather just a flat completely string-based code-model.

Actually it was quite hard making the static DUChain structure compatible with dynamic templates, where a new declaration can be created with every use of a class. However I succeeded, and today I’ve reached a milestone that is far above of what ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): Okular

System & Utilities As I already said, I wanted to work a bit on okular again and I am nearly done now.
Today and yesterday I added support for djvu-files and for Microsoft's Compressed HTML Help (chm) to okular. For both libraries there are now two patches for making them build with CMake ;-).
The library of djvu seems to work fine, chm has some problems with zooming though. I am not sure whose problem this is, but definitely that will need a clear head so I won't look at it now.

Another new feature will follow tomorrow: I asked my distro to package libopenjpeg for me and that guy was really nice and will make the openjpeg packages available tomorrow. Right after that I will follow with new poppler packages I think.
For all those waiting already, I am planning to make up a tutorial of how you can easily build a custom CD with your favourite KDE on Windows applications so that they are installable on their own.

Stefan Majewsky: A physicist’s playground, and no OpenGL experts

System & Utilities

Real life has been busy recently, but work on Kolf 2 is going on. My recent achievement has been first code for collision handling. The new implementation is much more compact and readable than the old one, and I have ensured through some simple tricks that the quirks with the old code (esp. ball-wall collision) cannot happen. Now some of you would like to see this code in action. As you cannot see correct collisions on a screenshot, and I have not yet installed recordmydesktop or such, you will have to checkout the code from playground/games.

I have spent much time to think about the further way of Kolf, and the path seems quite clear now. We

Duncan Mac-Vicar (duncanmv): Control Center in System Settings?

System & Utilities

Comments

After posting A refactoring journey: the control center yesterday, I got some comments quickly.

Of course I got some comments like “The category icons are too small” “Spacing is wrong”. When it was clearly stated at the end of the post:

Note that none of these screenshots mean “this is how the control center will look”. The focus is still on the infrastructure that enables us to try more radical approaches. For example, the old control center look and feel is trivial to emulate.

However, there was another series of comments:

Why don’t you add the yast options into the KDE settings?

I think the answer to this question is the same as the inverse. Why should we?

ls /usr/share/applications/YaST2/ | wc -l
85

There are 85 modules in my system. Well, not all visible. I don’t have all available installed either. But, would you like to have suddenly 85 icons in this view?

What do others do?

Martin Meredith: zsh seems to be getting a lot of press of late …

System & Utilities

And so it should - it’s an awesome shell.

Anyway, I’ve just spent a lot of time sorting out my zsh so it does titles in the right way. By this, I mean changing the title of your xterm window, and/or your screen window.

Anyway, here’s the code that I use for my zsh titles

precmd () {
case $TERM in
screen)
print -Pn \"e]0;%n@%m: %~a\"
print -Pn \"ekzsh: %~e\\"
;;
xterm*|rxvt)
print -Pn \"e]0;%n@%m: %~a\"
;;
esac
}

preexec () {
case $TERM in
screen)
print -Pn \"e]0;%n@%m: $1a\"
print -Pn \"ek$1e\\"
;;
xterm*|rxvt)
print -Pn \"e]0;%n@%m: $1a\"
;;
esac

}

I find this works in the same way that the default bash shell does ;) though - it also works quite nicely with screen, and sets the screen titles for you too :D

Also - my prompt lines are (inspired by Daniel Silverstone circa 2005)

export RPROMPT='%B%d%b %t '
export PROMPT='%B%n@%m %#%b '

Happy zsh’ing folks!

Matt Williams: Back to KDE

System & Utilities

This last term at University has been pretty busy. That's to be expected I guess since it's now my final year but I've been busy with my final year masters project (a particle physics project in collaboration with BaBar) and a course in high performance computing where I've learned everything from SWIG to OpenMP and MPI. My interest was so piqued by the HPC stuff that I've decided that I am going to focus my PhD on that area, now I just need to find somewhere that will take me :)

Anyway, that's the reason I've been somewhat absent from KDE recently. However, now it's the Christmas break and while I do have some Uni work to do, I've got some time for KDE stuff, particularly for KSquares which has unfortunately been almost unchanged since KDE 4.0.0. I'm just about to start work on a full AI system for it. Up until now, the AI had two modes, one which just moves randomly (hardly fun to play against) and another which ...read more...

Rafael Fern

System & Utilities

The more you get comments and the more you study something, the more lost you feel, at least where there’s really a few number of people that seem to agree.

This is what I currently have for System Settings, because I was asked to “columnify” elements. This is the first approach we can give, which consists on setting a grid, being its size the biggest width & height in all elements in the view:

This is what the current System Settings (in 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2) does. It maybe leads to really huge spacings between small elements because of only one item being specially big, because of its string. The other solution is to wrap the text at items:

I also have rewritten the way Dolphin draws the category, since it seems that almost nobody liked it. I want to say that accepting a ...read more...

Paul Adams: Connectivity Distribution in KDE

System & Utilities

You might remember from one of my recent posts that I mentioned mlaurent and aacid had high connectivity in my communication graph. This wasn't an idle observation...

(I suggest you head back and read that post if you need a reminder of what I'm on about here)

When we graph communication (of all sorts) we expect some nodes in the graph to be more highly connected than others. It has been noted by Barabasi in the book "Linked" and by Benkler in the book "The Wealth of Networks" that as the distribution of connectivity grows organically into a Power-Law distribution then that communication network has reached maturity. I highly recommend both books to everyone.

So, do we see this in KDE?...

KDE Connectivity Distribution

This clearly forms some form of Power-Law distribution; there are lots of developers with low connectivity and few developers with high connectivity. So this is a good thing. However, the massive drop between the number of developers with 1-10 connections and the number of ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: kwin screencast

System & Utilities Hi everyone,

For a presentation I gave last saturday I made a KWin screencast showing off KDE beta 2 stuff. Quality in Youtube is rather low, but viewable (with annotations). Here you go.

And here's blib.tv (better quality & oggfile available).

Enjoy.

edit: blip.tv is still transcoding the video to a flash-format, so you can now only view the ogg file if your system/OS is capable of viewing that format. I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be as the video format doesn't have any associated costs or royalties and has been around for years. But if it is not available for you, you just have to wait for the flash version to be ready...

Lucas Murray (Zarin): Alt+tabbing with lots of windows quickly

System & Utilities

I just had the best brainwave just now. You know when you have so many windows open at once and you want to navigate them quickly with just the keyboard? Normally you would hit alt+tab, look through the list for the window you want, then repeatedly hit tab until you reached the window. If you're a massive multitasker like me this can take a good 5-10 seconds to actually get to the window (Plus maybe a few incorrect window selections as well). So instead using the normal window switcher I set the "toggle present windows" shortcut to alt+tab.

Now, actually manually setting this shortcut to alt+tab instead of just changing the "window switcher" to present windows in the KWin desktop effect general tab entirely changes how it works. If you just change the window switcher to present windows it will display all the windows in a grid and highlight the one you will be selecting once you release the alt key, manually setting it means you can release the alt key and actually type in the name ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): Why Google will not achieve world domination (and why marble will do so instead)

System & Utilities Just some seconds ago I realized fully that this very blog was not listed in any search engine. This was due to Google's blogspot team being incapable of writing the correct description to a button. Instead of hiding my blog on the front page, the button simply set the NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW tags, which made it impossible for me to google myself!!!!11!!1

This of course doesn't happen in Marble, which can only lead to the correct conclusion that Marble will dominate the world instead.

Besides searching for my own blog I am not idle: I tried to get some opensuse packages for libepub, the library hidden in the ebook-tools which, as the name says, is used to read ebook file formats. There is some support for that in Okular, that's why I decided to make packages for everybody.
Since I am working on some more Okular-related stuff, you will probably hear more about that soon.

Tejas Dinkar (gja): Bash AutoCompletion

System & Utilities If you are using Fedora, then please:

# yum install bash-completion

God, I wish I had known how to get this working earlier. Earlier I used to manually copy completion scripts to my home folder

Now BASH makes intelligent choices for autocompletion.

My favorite is for dbus send. Wow

Try out the following example:

dbus-send[tab][tab][tab][tab]sy[tab][tab][tab][tab]p[tab][tab]o[tab]fr[tab]A[tab][tab][tab]A[tab]G[tab]H[tab]

which, for those of you who are quite lazy, simplifies to:

method return sender=:1.10 -> dest=:1.2526 reply_serial=2
string "yoda"

PS: for strict accuracy, the script above is actually provided by "dbus-glib-devel-0.76-3.fc10.i386". Get this too. However, the bash-completion script provides autocompletion for more useful things, such as svn, git, sudo (most important), yum and man.
