Agustin Benito Bethencourt: ModularIT a new community project for system administrators

System & Utilities I want to write today about what I have been doing lately.

After finishing my job related with public administrations' migration to free software in Extremadura and Malaga, Andalucia, Spain, I began to work again in November with my Canary Islands teammates (Grupo CPD) in ModularIT. This is a project we released under GPLv3 a few monthes ago that was ready to use but not to contribute to. In practice, as it happens too often, projects are published as free software but, since they don't have the proper design and a right tool, it is not possible for developers to work on it, so nobody use them.

This was exactly what it happened to us. We made a big effort then but another extra effort was needed. It is not enough to public the software and wait for the community to use it. You also need to take care of a few other things. We decided not just to offer a new 100% percent community project, but also to release a new ...read more...

Daniel Meltzer (hydrogen): It was just a beginning

System & Utilities

This is the first time I've actually gotten around to posting anything on the internet. I've been working on Amarok since we started on the 2.0 adventure, and have stuck my nose in most of Amarok since then. I'm hoping to write a series of posts about some of the cool things in Amarok 2, and some of the cooler things to come. Today I'm going to preview 2.0.1, because as we said earlier, 2.0 was just a beginning, and the evolution is already going full speed.

Amarok's code was in a feature freeze for a while before 2.0 was released. There were all sorts of changes in the code, and all sorts of annoying bugs that needed to be fixed. Fixing bugs is no where near as fun as adding new features, and we needed to stop adding features to let the code settle down. This left Amarok 2 missing some very useful features that Amarok 1.4 had. The good news is, many of these features have returned in 2.0.1

2.0.1 brings back searching in the playlist, as ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: graphics dojo in 2008: a wrap-up

System & Utilities

If you show some friends an ancient trick to multiply two numbers in your head within seconds, typically you would either get a dismissal ("Fast? A calculator or Google is faster!") or an excitement ("How useful!"). Each response is justified. In our daily activities, we seldom face the situation that force us to only multiply two numbers and right at that moment you don't have a calculator (or Google) at your disposal. However, knowing such an art can help you to improve your overall math skill, cast away the unnecessary fear, build your passion for math, and makes you ready for the next level. As Louis Pasteur once expressed, "In the field of observation, chance favors the prepared mind".

The same goes for some of the graphics examples I have written for that Labs Graphics Dojo corner, and also what I have shown in my Developer Days talk. The most common comment is "Blazing-fast? Just use OpenGL!" That is very true, and I could not agree more. However, googling for 27, ...read more...

Sayak Banerjee (glade88): KDE 4.2 counter

System & Utilities

I made a small KDE 4.2 counter. The small icons in the counter indicate (left to right) a great interface, security (good ol’ *nix), ease of usage, customizability and support that KDE offers.

This one is just a static image. Click on the image to view the counter on my webserver.

You can download the counter from here. Please note that the counter would suit on pages with white background only. As I made it in a bit of a hurry, the oxygen tooltip was not given a transparent background.

I’m pretty much excited about KDE 4.2, though beta 2 has been more than satisfactory :)

Sayak Banerjee (glade88): KDE Forums on IRC: #kde-forum

System & Utilities

For all those who don’t know already, we have the channel #kde-forum (Network: irc.freenode.net) set up.

What is the purpose of this channel?
#kde-forum is not for technical support related to KDE and it’s applications (#kde is for that purpose).
#kde-forum is a team channel for Forum Staff and it’s members (as well as non members).

What can I ask/discuss there?
Any forum related queries are welcome. You can discuss about all activities going on at the forums, Klassrooms and kourses (though the best place for kourse discussions would be at the kourse discussions area within the Klassroom forum), forum design as well as forum teams. You can definitely discuss registration problems, MyBB bugs (KDE Forum is powered by MyBB boards), forum/subforum requests, as well as user specific issues.

So all those who participate (and also those who don’t ;) ) at KDE Forums are welcome to join us there.

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): All I want for Christmas is OpenSolaris packages for KDE4

System & Utilities It's not like Saint Nick is going to bring me coal (besides, I'm Dutch: Sinterklaas was nearly three weeks ago). Instead, packaging efforts have been carrying on. I've advanced to KDEpim by now, which means that I have completed [ade]'s Simplistic Desktop - konsole, konqueror and kmail - once more. What this means is that we have a KDE4 desktop that hooks in to the existing libraries on the system, in order to reduce code duplication, reduce security issues (e.g. no private Kerberos, just use the one on the system; no private libgcrypt), and make things generally easier to ship.

When I say these are "available" that means "you can build them yourself by following the techbase instructions and by reading commit logs and telepathically re-creating the patch for FAAD2 that was lost"; the binary packages are, of course, on the workstation under my desk and aren't being served up anywhere, yet. But rest assured that the bits are there.

As an illustration of what this means for package counts, there are 53 packages ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): notifications

System & Utilities I've been taking a few days off, sort of, around the holidays here. The P-man is visiting his mom and I have a house guest, so it's a nice time to do so. Of course, I'm still checking my mail, closing bugs and making commits (just fixed a crasher in folderview, actually) ... but I'm only spending a few hours a day on KDE around the Christmas holiday time this year. That means my blog is not getting updated. =)

I've been brought out of blog hibernation a few days early because I keep getting asked about Mark Shuttleworth's post on notifications and figured I should get something out in a mildly timely fashion.

Before I do that, however, happy holidays to everyone out there. I hope you are finding some time with loved ones or even just some quiet contemplative time if this time of year is special for you. Happy new years as well. =)

That out of the way .. I do have to say that it's a little embarrassing that ...read more...

Jos Poortvliet: Chakra

System & Utilities The Chackra project is cool.

They're the guys behind KDEmod, a modular set of KDE packages for Arch linux. For those who don't know Arch, the highlights:
- KISS (simplicity and flat config files over graphical point-and-click)
- Vanilla packages (as little deviations from upstream as possible)
- Rolling release schedule (no fixed releases - if a new app comes out, it gets packaged, tested, and put in the repositories. Releases are just snapshots, done when a new kernel becomes available)
- binary packages by default but excellent automatic source building system (ABS)

The KDEmod packages have always been great. Not just because they were modular, but during the KDE 3.5.x series the developers added interesting patches. Apparently, with KDEmod 4.1.x completely vanilla, they turned their attention to writing their own stuff. Meet Chackra, a livecd based on arch & KDEmod. Comes with an installer (which looks incredibly cool) and after using it you have a fully vanilla arch installation. Finally, they also work on package management tools, hardware ...read more...

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): UDS Jaunty and Desktop Experience

System & Utilities

The Ubuntu Development Summit happened at Google the other week. Large numbers of people got together to spend a week discussing the next six months in Ubuntu. Lots of specs got written and you can find the Kubuntu Jaunty specs here.

One of the most notable changes is the plan to change to using Package Kit, it's always a shame to move on from the hard work that has gone in before, but it makes the most sense for us to use a framework and apps that can be shared amongst many other distros. Hugs to Peter for work much appreciated.

I'd like to see KDE 3 libs off the CD for Jaunty, and if possible Qt 3 too. With Akonadi bringing in mysqld we'll need all the space we can find. One of the last hangers on to Qt 3 is OpenOffice, anyone feel like reviving OpenOffice KDE project for Oxygen and Qt 4 support?

Mysql is going to be a hassle, as I say it takes up a lot of ...read more...

Benoit Jacob (bjacob): Eigen 2.0 beta3 released!

System & Utilities

We just released the third beta of Eigen 2. Like the rest of the KDE community we are in heavy bug-fixing and polishing mode and this new beta gets us quite close to what we'll soon be calling a release candidate. This is really a result of Eigen's increasing number of users: useful bug reports have been flowing in continuously in the past 3 weeks.

Documentation-wise, here is a FAQ section on vectorization.

Also, we now have a Eigen users forum and I must say that the guys at forum.kde.org, especially Neverendingo, are very helpful.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Back again part 5

System & Utilities

So I returned a few days ago from our latest deployment. As far as SSBN patrols go it was pretty successful.

Anyways, since there’s no better way to celebrate a return to port than spending time with family, I’ve been doing a lot of that. My wife is pregnant with our second kid so we went out to get her a recliner since the littlest one has been hurting her back.

Another good way to celebrate return to port is to start fixing bugs! In that spirit I fixed bug 178425 in kdelibs yesterday. Hopefully the File Open/File Save standard dialogs will sort more intelligently for you now.

I also did the normal upgrades and cursory review of the last couple of weeks of messages that I missed. I noticed that Paul Adams had a post up about code contributions to KDE. It looks just how I’d expect for myself:

In other news someone was nice enough to mail my wife some KDE swag and a cheer-up note for the holidays, which ...read more...

Tom Albers: Bookmarksync

System & Utilities

Since the Konqueror team is working hard on squashing bugs, I decided to switch back from Firefox to Konqueror now that things are working again.

I really did not like some aspects of firefox, like the integration with the other components. PDF's should just open in Okular and all the other stuff surrounding downloading and opening stuff Firefox can not open, seems broken to me. But one aspect of Firefox is good: the plugins. There are plenty. One of them Foxmarks really rocks, you can have the same bookmarks on all your different computers you use.

I wanted the same for Konqueror and as Konqi also support plugins, I decided to write one this weekend. It is a simple plugin, it just copies the bookmark file to a location. And 'a location' can be anything of course. In my case 'fish://some.remote.server/home/toma'.

If you add a new bookmark it automatically copies it over and when you launch Konqi it checks if the remote location has a newer file. With those two options, it just means you automatically have the same bookmarks ...read more...

Kevin Krammer: Artifical borders or how positive aspects of globalisation are withheld from consumers

System & Utilities

The human race has been living and thinking in terms of borders for a long time, since the first people decided to settle down instead of keeping a nomadic life style.

Ideally each individual's respect for everyone else's needs and personal boundaries would be sufficient to control access to shared resources and such things, however I am not holding my breath that this would happen any time soon (soon as in terms if centuries).

Therefore we happen to need borders and ways to enforce them, such as protecting political borders through military forces, legal borders through law enforcement, etc.
Sometimes people separated by such borders decide that whatever reason they had to create these in the first place are no longer sufficiently imporant (if they exist at all) and work on removing these obstacles reap the benefits of what basically is a reunion.

I know that all of you reading this blog understand this very well, because we, communities like KDE, are an unprecedented reunion of people separated by all kind of borders.
This is why people within ...read more...

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): OpenSUSE 11.1 and nVidia == AWESOME!!

System & Utilities

Stark contrast to my last post, I know, but I felt it was only fair to blog about the wonders of OpenSUSE 11.1, even/especially with my little nVidia chip. First off, I still think there’s something wonky going on with X and/or nVidia’s driver in taking so long to start that kdm ends up giving up and committing hari kari, but my little workaround in extending ServerAttempts and ServerTimeout in kdmrc seems to be at least good enough to keep me from committing hari kari myself. And quite honestly, that’s about as much time as I want to spend on debugging it. =:/

But I updated to the KDE 4.2 beta2 packages again today and am absolutely loving OpenSUSE 11.1. Things are blazingly fast and well-put-together, and best of all, my faith is totally restored in OpenSUSE after I reinstalled from scratch again. So what changed between my last post and now? A few things:

Yesterday when I installed the KDE 4.2 beta2 packages, I also pulled in the unstable Qt45 packages as well. Maybe that caused ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Midwinter!

System & Utilities Where did the week go. Well, I know where some of it went, last-week-before Christmas cleanups at the office (where I now work only 2 days a week on Computer Science in High Schools, developing lesson materials) and then putting on my organizing hat for a spontaneous midwinter block party, BBQ and booze fest. I settled on the idea with a neighbour (also called Adriaan) friday, printed up some invites, bought lots of dead animals saturday, and sunday night we had 15 kids and 20 adults standing around the fire out on the street for a dead-of-winter party. Dutch weather being what it is, 10 degrees and dry is pretty nice. Almost T-shirt weather for us Canucks, and since I was tending the fire and the BBQ, that's just what I did.

I didn't sing any songs. Pradeepto tells a good tale (and Gopel V is indeed infinitely cool). Sometimes you just gotta take one for the team. And lest anyone forget, I still need to team up with .. um .. probably Paul ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): can I get any lazier?

System & Utilities

I’ve never really cared much for studying. Trying to memorize facts seems incredibly boring (although digits of pi aren’t ;) and it’s always a struggle to actually get anything done.

This semester i had two math classes - and sfu math classes are hard, so i can’t just ignore them and expect an A. ;) So i decided to use a tool pete uses for language training to help me memorize the boring bits of the math classes (which turned out to be almost all of them).

It’s called anki, and it’s a cute little flashcard program written in pyqt4. It also has a web interface and a client for the iphone iirc, although i haven’t used those. It was originally designed for learning japanese, but it’s expanded since then. It’s got LaTeX support, so writing crazy math equations isn’t a problem. System & Utilities

Good news to all Kubuntu and Fedora users. The cause for the video garbage appearing whenever a new window is opened has been discovered. A custom patch to xorg is causing the trouble. Now we can only hope that the distributions will provide updates for xorg without this patch. If you don’t want to wait that long and you are a Kubuntu user just add the following ppa to your sources.list and upgrade your system:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/adamspain/ubuntu intrepid main

The interesting thing is that NVIDIA knew about this patch for at least one month and started to work around it in their drivers. That’s great as it shows that they care about KDE and want to improve the KDE experience. The bad is that they did not communicate that a custom patch to xorg is responsible for the problem. Neither in KDE’s nor in Ubuntu’s bug report there is a comment from NVIDIA. And that’s sad. With a little bit more communication the problem would have been solved much earlier.
