Introducing: Accretion! A file browser in QML for the Desktop.

System & Utilities

Hi,

I’ve been trying very hard to get this in a shape where i can really show off screenshots. And before the next pim sprint (which starts in just 2 days!). What you’re about to read is from a project that is highly work in progress! It is by no means anywhere near alpha quality. Also the design is not final by any means. The stuff you see in screenshots below is the intended direction, but even here there is a lot still missing.

So far for the little disclaimer.

Accretion, the name

Accretion has a meaning. In astrophysics the meaning is:

The first and most common is the growth of a massive object by gravitationally attracting more matter, typically gaseous matter in an accretion disk.[1] Accretion disks are common around smaller stars or stellar remnants in a close binary or black holes in the centers of spiral galaxies. Some dynamics in the disk are necessary to allow orbiting gas to lose angular momentum and fall onto the central massive object. Occasionally, this can result in stellar surface fusion. Modern CMake with Qt and Boost

System & Utilities

Last week I attended the MeetingC++ conference with several colleagues. KDAB was a gold sponsor of the conference in Düsseldorf, and I delivered a talk about ‘Modern CMake‘ with Qt and Boost. My slides are available here and the sequence of them is reflected in this post.

As there will be no video recordings posted of the talk, the next best thing is turning my presentation notes into a blog post.

qt-boost-cmake-logos

I’ve worked for a while on CMake, and over the last few years and releases I have completely transformed how it works with regard to dependencies over the last few years and releases. The features I’m showing in here have mostly arrived in the last two CMake releases, but some of the features will arrive only in the next release or another future release.

My contribution to Boost so far has only been related to some minor cleanups and ...read more...

SQL results in range-for

System & Utilities

I’ve been irritated for the way a QSqlQuery result-set is supposed to be processed for some time now – with while(query.next()) and getting the results via query.value(...). I was always thinking it would be nice if it were more accessible… namely, accessible using iterators.

To be able to do something like this:

for (auto &record: query) {
// do something with
record[0]
// or
record[\"ID\"]
}

You have a simple .h file to include, and it will just work. [1]

The issue is that it is only tailored to match only this use-case – it can be improved to do more, and to allow more iterators over the same query, but I don’t really care to do that :)

Animated Bracket Matching in Kate Part

System & Utilities

Kate in 4.13 will have a new features: Animated bracket matching!

Since the feature might be visually distracting, it is turned off by default. To enable this feature, you have to go into the “Appearance” config page and check “[x] Animate bracket matching.” Due to feature and message freeze, this feature will be available in 4.13 and not in 4.12.

By the way, over the years we were asked several times to add the feature to jump to the matching bracket. This feature already exists. It is called “Move to Matching Bracket” and is bound by default to the shortcut “Ctrl+6″. You can change the shortcut in the “Configure Shortcuts” dialog.

Interaction Design for Users

System & Utilities

If you followed my last blog posts or those by Oindrila or Magdalena, you could see how Artikulate evolved over the last nine months: We started with a simple “development UI”, meaning a quite arbitrary puzzle of buttons and lists at the screen. When features were implemented, also the UI started to reflect that by receiving more buttons, structure and complexity. In recent times we started to look at workflows and tried to model them in a best afford way. Our focus was on important workflows and interactions, where “important” was understood from our point of view as developers. — So we implicitly assumed that our users’ workflows match with our own ones.

Yet, this approach is wrong. When designing an application for a user, we should focus at his/her expectations (which are not necessarily ours).

Hence, we started to rethink our design process from scratch. Our goal is to first understand who our users are and what they want, before designing for them. For this we make use of a widely ...read more...

Living in Berlin? The Geeko comes to you!

System & Utilities
Geeko is coming to Berlin! Today, Javier Llorente arrived at my place and has organized an 'openSUSE meetup' at C-Base, Berlin's most awesome Geek Spot. It starts around 17:00 and lasts until about 20:00 - but who knows what else will happen.

We will give an overview of what's new and then it is time for some testing and playing with the new release. We will bring some USB sticks with openSUSE 13.1 RC2, so if you bring a laptop to test it on that'd be awesome!

Even without laptops you're very much welcome - a bunch of Geekos meeting always results in fun, no worries about that. Anybody is welcome, even if you happen to run another distribution...

See you there!

kdev-python update: version 1.5.2 released

System & Utilities

I'm happy to announce the availability of a second stabilization update for the 1.5 series of kdev-python, the Python language support plugin for the KDevelop development environment. See the 1.5 announcement for more information.

kdev-python version 1.5.2
http://download.kde.org/stable/kdevelop/kdev-python/1.5.2/src/kdev-python-v1.5.2.tar.xz.mirrorlist
SHA256:84ae7015623a3848b1c1ce8e8f958c32778e9ba0afafa3ea3b3dd70687e1fe40

The kdev-python 1.5 series is compatible with KDevelop 4.5 (kdevplatform 1.5) and is suitable for working with Python 2.x source code.
If you're only interested in using (as opposed to packaging or developing) kdev-python, you should consider installing kdev-python from your distribution's package manager instead of downloading the source code.
kdev-python running in KDevelop master
Changes in this release (relative to 1.5.1):
  • Fix a bug which led to the PEP8 checker running on non-python files in some cases
  • Properly support unicode docstrings (thanks to Alexandr Zamaraev)
  • Fix a crash in code completion which happened in some rare cases
  • Fix a crash which could happen ...read more...

publishing content with bodega

System & Utilities

The other day I wrote about Bodega, an open market for digital content. It was impossible to get everything into one blog entry, however, as Bodega engages with people in three different ways: as consumers, as creators and as distributors. In that previous entry, I focused on what Bodega is to you when you are interacting with it as a consumer. Today we'll be exploring Bodega from the perspective of a content creator.

Warehouses and Stores

As a creator, Bodega strives to empower you. Most of the digital content systems that currently exist have you give your content to a publisher then controls where it can be delivered on your behalf. Unfortunately, this usually means that when you upload something to a specific online store, that becomes the only place people can get it from.

This is actually a fairly odd result if we compare it to how things works in the atom-based economy. Out in the physical world, people make things and they tend to pass it through a wholesaler to distributes it to multiple retailers. Rarely ...read more...

How Code flows – about Upstream and Downstream

System & Utilities

The FLOSS ecosystem consists of a large amount of independent projects which develop their software. In the end this software should be used by a user and we have the “distributions” to provide the software to them. As the name implies it’s about distributing the software. A distribution takes software from a large amount of independent projects and integrates them to provide a working set applications. A huge and impressive task and that’s the main task of a distribution: they are software integrators.

Various software products depend on each other and there is the chance of conflicts. The distributions need to ensure that this all works. The best matching metaphor for how this works is a river. It flows from the spring to the sea and takes on the water of many other rivers. The code flows from one project to the other to reach at the end the user.

upstream-downstream

Although that looks rather linear, it is not. In truth each independent project has many upstream and many ...read more...

Every time you use CONFIG+=ordered, a kitten dies.

System & Utilities

QMake users: public service announcement. If you use CONFIG+=ordered, please stop right now. If you don't, I'll hunt you down. I promise to god I will.

There is simply no reason to use this, ever. There's two reasons this might be in your project file:

  1. you have no idea what you are doing, and you copied it from somewhere else
  2. you have a target that needs to be built after another target, and you don't know any better
If you fit into category 1, then I hope you're turning red right now, because by using CONFIG+=ordered, you're effectively screwing over multicore builds of your code. See a very nice case of this here.

If you fit into category 2, then you're doing it wrong. You should specify dependencies between your targets properly like this:

TEMPLATE = subdirs
SUBDIRS = src plugins tests docs
plugins.depends = src
tests.depends = src plugins

And then you'll have docs built whenever the build tool feels like it, and the rest built when their dependencies are built.

If you have subdirectories involved in this, ...read more...

Welcome "ownCloud Documents"

System & Utilities

A couple of weeks ago I blogged about the new features in ownCloud 6. I promised a special surprise in the coming weeks. And here it is. ;-)

In the past few month we have worked on a feature that will be super useful and popular. All the development happened in a public repository on github but we haven't talked about it in public and perhaps it wasn't obvious what it was for people who found it by accident.

I'm talking about collaborative editing! This feature is implemented in an app called "ownCloud Documents" and will be part of ownCloud 6. People can view and edit their ODF text documents directly in the browser, inside your ownCloud. Another cool thing is that you can invite users from the same ownCloud to work collaboratively on the same document with you. Or you can send invitation links by email to  people outside your server to collaborate with you on the document.

Several people can navigate in the same document with different  cursors at the same time and you can see the ...read more...

Yo, dogg, about those HDDs

System & Utilities

HDD cleanup continues apace. I did like the wisecrack about semantic storage — although it’s not quite correct, since these are drives removed from otherwise decommissioned machines, or tarballs rolled of my university student account before the departmental Solaris server was decommissioned. It’s more like moving boxes never before opened (I know there’s several that I moved house with 8 years ago that are still awaiting an opening moment). In the mean time I’ve discovered a bunch of academic papers I had forgotten I had ever written and a bunch of OCaml I wrote that I no longer understand, as well as several versions of my bachelor’s thesis written in the winter of 1998.

Anyway, while futzing about with all these drives I’ve set up my main machine as FreeBSD 9.2-STABLE, running KDE 4.10 (which is as new as the KDE-FreeBSD ports are — 4.11 introduces some interesting new breakage which hasn’t been dealt with yet). I could repeat what I wrote several years ago: with KDE on top, noone knows what you’re running underneath and ...read more...

HDD Cleanup

System & Utilities

Last week I sat down with a pile ‘o hard drives of varying vintage (although all of them SATA-era), ranging from 80GB to 500GB, which had been used in machines over the past ten years. The idea being to sort out what’s where and why and to consolidate the interesting bits. First order of business on each drive was figuring out what partitioning scheme and filesystems were on there. I suppose if you stick to one OS over time that’s a simple thing, but I have fdisk+ext2 filesystems, gpt+zfs, gpt+gmirror+gstripe+ufs and other things in the mix. Reconstructing the path from two physical drives labeled “Comice” and “Anjou” to a readable filesystem can take a while.

Anyway, interesting bits have been recovered, like an older mp3 collection of mine ripped from CDs I can no longer find (they must be somewhere in the house, in a box labeled “beware of the leopard” or something like that).
Some of the drives were once in various KDE servers or machines I gave acces to for KDE ...read more...

PIM Sprint, here I come!

System & Utilities

I just booked my train tickets to Brno for the KDE PIM Sprint 2013 this November!

There I plan to discuss the future of KMail Active with Michael Bohlender, my ideas for task-centric communication using KPeople with the KPeople people (muahahaha!), as well as general KDE PIM usability stuff with everybody who does UIs in KDE PIM. And, given that people like Àlex Fiestas, David Edmundson, Jan Grulich, Vishesh Handa or Martin Klapetek are there as well, there will probably also be quite some non-PIM-related stuff to talk about.

Since sprints are mostly “hacking time” for the devs, I will have to find some non-discussion stuff to do during the times when all you can hear in the room is the clacking of keyboards, so maybe I’ll use the time to improve my QML skills (a KDE sprint is surely a good occasion for that because there are always people around who know QML quite well already).

I’m looking forward to seeing so many nice ...read more...

Bodega Asset Ratings

System & Utilities
One crucial feature for a content store are the ratings of an asset,
every content store needs some ratings in its assets. So we had to figure
out how to handle the ratings in in bodega, my idea was to
use the 5-star rating system. I was thinking “What could go wrong? Its the system that most of
the content systems are using.” well here is what it could go wrong http://xkcd.com/1098/ :)
The image from the xkcb explains how meaningless is the 5-star rating system. Then Aaron proposed an alternative solution and is the one which we use. Every category of assets would have a few rating attributes
which would have a description and a value. So, here is an example, all the assets of the category games would have rating attributes such as:
  • performance
  • stability
  • playability
those attributes can have values from 1-5 which will have guiding text to help the user decide how to rate the item. for instance, stability might have as 1 star the value ...read more...

New Wraparound Tool!

System & Utilities

Krita 2.8 will have some really awesome features! Today we are going to show you the new "Wraparound Tool" that will be available in the next release.

This cool feature is for creating infinitely tilable textures, just press "W" key and start to enjoy:

Thanks to Paul Geraskin (Mifth) for this video!

It consists of two parts:

  1. View Part: repeats your image on the display.
  2. Brush Engine: painting outside of the image borders will look like the borders are connected to each other, that will seem that you are painting being inside a closed sphere. It will never end!

Above usual painting, you can use "Move Tool" in this mode. Try it and get a nice, psychedelic effect :)

Switching to Kubuntu comments

System & Utilities

KDE Project:

Some comments on switching to Kubuntu from a recent Slashdot article...

I switched to Kubuntu ... I haven't looked back. I like *buntu distributions simply because they're the easiest to get up and running. Unless you need a highly customized Linux system, you can't argue with *buntu's simplicity when it comes to installation.

I can't upvote this enough. Kubuntu is a perfectly decent distro. KDE 4 has finally come of age.

I just wiped my box after a drive failure and went Kubuntu. It's early days but so far I love it. It's very polished, responsive and easy to get "functional" IE with binary NVIDIA driver, non-free codecs etc. It feels like a premium product I should have to pay for.

The End of the Google Summer of Code

System & Utilities

The GSoC coding period has ended last Monday. In this blog post, I will summarize what I have done during the summer, to give a general idea of what you can expect from a future version of Nepomuk, if my work is accepted by the Nepomuk maintainers.

The source code of the first two projects is available in the steckdenis-gsoc2013 branches of the nepomuk-core and nepomuk-widgets Git repositories. The browser plugin can be found in the scratch/dsteckelmacher/nepomukintegration.git scratch repository.

The Nepomuk Query Parser

The first part of my GSoC project was to implement a new user query parser for Nepomuk. This parser is responsible for translating queries entered by the user into a formal representation suitable for querying the Nepomuk database.

Project Goals

The current version of the parser (that is used for years now) is based on regular expressions. It recognizes a language close to what you can use on Google (“foo -bar title:something”). At the beginning of the project, Vishesh Handa explained me that this parser has limitations (it is not able to parse file sizes, and its parsing of date-time ...read more...

How KDE Connect encryption works

System & Utilities

The goal of this post is that the security experts out there find flaws in our design so we could improve the security of KDE Connect, which is an important point. Probably this will get too technical if you don’t know what RSA keys are, so proceed under your own responsibility ;) .

The first thing we need in KDE Connect is the discovery of other devices. At the moment we provide a single backend that uses network UDP broadcast to achieve this. When a devices connects to a new network, it sends a broadcast message with its unique ID and name and how reach it (that is: ip and port). Other devices will react to that broadcast sending back their own information, so both devices will know each other.  (Note: We tried Avahi instead of a manual UDP broadcast, but finally we didn’t use it because we found two main problems: the Android implementation is of extreme poor quality, plus multicast is sometimes blocked by routers :( ).

At this point the ...read more...
