Michael Pyne (mpyne): Nuclear subs collide

System & Utilities

I guess Slashdot has finally picked up on the collision between a British and French SSBN. Since submarining is my Real Job ™ I figured I’d try to disspell some of the inaccuracies I saw among the Slashdot comments.

I saw lots of comments regarding how extraordinarily low the probability “must be” for having two SSBNs collide in the Atlantic, therefore it must be some secret exercise, which I wanted to go into.

First off, SSBNs on patrol would not be able to just go anywhere in the Atlantic that they wanted to. Any missile system will have a set range, so depending on what country or countries they suspect they’d have to launch against, they’d at least have to be within some kind of minimum weapons range.

Further, there could be other criteria limiting their possible operating area. Maybe a country wants to keep their SSBNs within range of their maritime patrol aircraft so that there is air cover available to try and detect hostile SSNs looking for the SSBN. Maybe a country ...read more...

Tomaz Canabrava (tomaz): KDE in nearly all public schools in brazil.

System & Utilities

Today I was in a public school near where I live for a interview with Nazareth, the coordinator of a social-inclusion project for the less afortunate kids in brazil, that live in 2 poor-communities: Alto do Coqueirinho and Bairro da paz.

What do you plan to accomplish with your project?

The students here have many needs that their family cannot provide, there’s a lack of love, lack of knowledge and everything that is happening to them is weird, they don’t talk about it at home, and the school should provide some shelter.

But what has linux to do with this kind of thing?

I Feel in love with linux the first time I heard about it. all kids that live near hear doesn’t have the money to buy computers, and nowdays it’s really important to be part of the digital-inclusion for jobs and such. they usually uses the computer for playing, but some are already ...read more...

Kevin Krammer: Changes in communication channels

System & Utilities

When people used to say that blogs are the new usenet, they meant that discussions and flamewars which used to happen on usenet newsgroups, now happen in blogs and their comment sections.

Some bloggers even use their new publishing channel for making inquiries, i.e. the famous and infamous "dear lazyweb" postings.

See? I wrote unconsciously even used "postings", not something like "personal log entry"!

Anyway.

I've come to the conclusion that there is another shift of media going on, this time a move away from mailing lists. I have to say that I haven't yet been able to determine where the usage shifted to, so in case you have ideas, please let me know.

It is probably also quite dependent on target audience because at least our developer mailing lists seem still to be used for questions, announcements and so on.
Since, as a free software community contributor, I am primarily a developer nowadays, I wasn't aware of this change in other areas of contributions.

For example about a month ago I sent an invitation to the two main ...read more...

A. L. Spehr (blauzahl): l33t with line noise^w Perl?

System & Utilities I'm not sure which is annoying me more right now:
a) setting up a non brain-dead set of a directory hierarchy with branch and config-files to deal with it all, plus the fact that I can't seem to find documentation for it or
b) that the California state budget, probably trading small children and fish for tax cuts, is currently being worked out by 5 people, with everybody else unlikely to have a chance to even read it before voting on it, or pestering those who vote on it

Maybe I should worry about zombie invasion instead. But I can actually fix a) and maybe write some documentation in the process. In the category of things I can't do and would make my life easier: not memorizing backtraces.

We recently upgraded Bugzilla from 2.x to 3.x, which means all the custom APIs need to be ported. These are in Perl. One of the things included is what let us search for duplicate backtraces... Having that back would be very nice for developers and BugSquad's triagers. So, ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Google Chrome

System & Utilities

So I guess that the upcoming Linux port of Google Chrome will be using the GTK+ toolkit.

Unfortunately the OSNews story I linked to didn’t bother to link to the email that they’re quoting so I only have their writeup of the explanation from Google engineer Ben Goodger to go off of. But it seems to me that Ben is making up explanations…

Regarding the question of why not Qt from the get-go instead of making essentially three different applications, he replies by more or less saying that using cross-platform toolkits doesn’t really offer anything except the illusion of native software, which makes the application end up “speaking with a foreign accent”. Now, that may be a reasonable issue he’s having. After all, he’s the Google engineer and I’m just the guy writing code in his spare time. But the same argument applies to his choice of GTK+, which is also a cross-platform toolkit. For the Linux/X11 platform both GTK+ and Qt are “native”. And Qt will, if you’re running under ...read more...

Artur Souza (MoRpHeUz): Tokamak II

System & Utilities

Last week we went to Porto and had Tokamak II, the plasma’s developers meeting. It was just a wonderful time and it was great to meet some people again and to put faces in some nicks.

I mainly worked on Plasmate, the new “plasma IDE” for writing scripted plasmoids. Specially in the previewer and I used the time to also take a look at some bits of plasma that I didn’t have the chance (time) to look at yet. So now I can say that I can help with plasma even more and that I have a lot of ideas for the upcoming releases.

A lot of good stuff was also showed there like the status of Qt-Kinetic, ideas for the picture frame, improves on extenders, crystal, lion mail, community stuff, etc…

Thanks KDE for this wonderful oportunity and I hope we can keep improving plasma for everybody ;)

Frederik Schwarzer: Who are you? - Just a man with a saw. (or: KShisen and me)

System & Utilities

Yoroshiku onegai shimasu

So, here I am. New on this planet, not quite that new on… you know, the other planet.
To make it short, my name is Frederik, a 28 years old computer something student from Germany. I have been active in KDE since 2006 as a translator and did some other tiny things here and there. If it comes to coding, I am currently neither very skilled nor very experienced. We learn basics about several lists andtrees but when it comes to writing real code, most of us just cannot do it (the results often make even me cry a little bit inside). While some might say that everything has its time, I do not like that aproach much.
Thus, a few weeks back I started looking at KShisen, a nice little game from the KDEGames module. The former maintainer Dave announced his retirement from this post in December and Mauricio, who did much of the porting-to-kde4 work, did not feel like being maintainer. Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): High defenition Oxygen, TokamakII, and paying the rent.

System & Utilities
Hey! Yes Oxygen now has a high definition folder 256x256, David Betio, created most of them out of the source svgz files during the Tokamak I had the pleasure to help make possible during this weekend. Major Kudos to DEI-ISEP for all the support excellent.

I also think we finished the Quassel icon set including some nice state animations for the system tray icons.
Next on to do some icons for Koffice... btw I have benn trying to post the icons I do in http://identi.ca/pinheirokde.

In a different front, I have been giving some thought on a method to pay my house rent, open source work is a lot of fun but it really does not pay the rent.

One of the ideas I had to help support oxygen development would be something like selling LGPL Oxygen adons like icons, wallpapers, avatars, even plasmoids, for ...read more...

Sacha Schutz (DrIDK): KALEngine... yes "A", it's not a mistake!

System & Utilities Holiday is good... ! I finished my exam, and I 'm immediately return to my keyboard for programing! For First and my training, I made 2 plasmoids ( fortunoid,translatoid) and a small geolocalisation-IP app using marble.
So, now I have the time to return in KGLEngine developpement.... But, before, I just finished to create KALEngine.

What's KALEngine ?
KALEngine is C++ wrapped openAL, for create many games using hight-level of sound management. Particulary the multi-channel output and the 3D sound... what can not do phonon.
I commit a first preview today. The code source is short, but now, you can easily play a sound.

#include kalsource.h
#include kalengine.h

int main (int argc, char **argv)
{
KALEngine sndEngine;
sndEngine.init();

KALSource * sound = new KALSource("ocean.wav"); //Create a short song

sound->play(); //play the song!

Jason Kasper (vanRijn): Screencasting in Linux!

System & Utilities

I’m excited. I love learning stuff, I really do. I just did  a 12-minute screencast for work, and I think I’ve finally figured out how to get everything to fit together nicely. I’d never done a screencast before–not on any platform–but being that I needed to showcase some development work that I’ve done for the next release of VMware Workstation/Player, and being that I’m working from home for the time being, I needed to get this all working in Linux, and as I said, I think I’ve finally figured it out, woot!

For starters, I used qt-recordMyDesktop to capture the full-screen (1600×1200 resolution) video. I wanted to use it to also capture the audio portion of the screencast at the same time, but when I tried doing so, the audio was really choppy and out of sync. I mostly blame pulseaudio, but also the fact that I did this all on my puny little laptop, and I think that the system just wasn’t able to keep up with me, recording a nested Xephyr session with 4 fake Xinerama monitors (thanks ...read more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): First release candidate for Opale

System & Utilities

One of my pet projects (A simple bank account manager focused on graphs and planning) is about to reach 1.0. This first release candidate has been tested on several Linux systems and Windows. It can compile against KDE, but Qt is enough. (no, i have not yet tested with KDE/Windows…).

So far, the only big problem with this RC is that translations are broken. This will be fixed in -rc2, to be released soon.

By the way, I could use some help with:

  • getting a logo
  • translations
  • writing an ebuild for gentoo
  • compilation/tests on MacOS X
  • compilation using msvc on Windows

If you feel like you could help me, please contact me.

Chani Armitage (Chani): porto

System & Utilities

Well, tokamak is over, but i’m still in portugal. Somehow i accidentally booked the return flight for 3/10 instead of 2/10. One little digit makes such a difference… And none of the three other people who have copies of my itinerary noticed either. :/ The people at the airport won’t lift a finger until someone in vancouver tells them how much to charge me, and it’s the middle of the night there, so… Well, by the time people arrive at work in vancouver, i fear the people in porto will have gone home. The earliest flight i have a chance at is on thursday anyways, though.
The good news is, nuno’s taking care of me. I’m staying at his sister’s place, he loaned me a phone so i can call him, and i even got his internet password so i can go to the mall and get online there. Sadly there’s no internet in this apartment. He hacked my power adaptor so that my laptop’s plug would fit, too- the hole for ground was slightly too small. ...read more...

Tobias Koenig (tokoe): Never miss the bus again - Reloaded

System & Utilities

It has some time gone since I implemented the plasma widget to show the in-time departure information for local public traffic in Dresden, so I thought it is the right time to do something similar again. My current location is Oslo and it is really cold here (-14 this night), so you really don’t want to wait 10 minutes at the bus station for the next bus. Fortunately the local transport services trafikanten.no provides a WAP service that allows you to retrieve the departure information of busses, trams and subways as WML pages. WML is a XML based markup language, so one would immediately start the favorite editor and hack together a bunch of code that uses QNetworkAccessManager to load the document from the internet and QDomDocument or QXmlStreamReader to parse the documents for the relevant information. However this approach needs a lot of glue code, and writing that wasts a lot of valuable time…

So today I want present a more efficient and smart way of doing ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): All about Tyrannosaurus Rex

System & Utilities Right. Listen up. This is what you need to know about Tyrannosaurses: is it bipedal? Did it run fast? Why as it called "the tyrant lizard"? How long was it from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail? How long were its jaws? How much did it weigh? How many teeth did it have? How long was each tooth?

The quiz card was illustrated with a photo of a cheap plastic model of a T-rex set on a patch of model-railroad scenery. Its colouring was purely conjectural.
