Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): Amarok Junior Job: Auto-download new podcasts

System & Utilities A recent comment by progmanos on the post of the 2.0.1.1 release reminded that I still have to implement Podcast episode auto-downloading. In the hurry to get 2.0 released I did add the config option, but forgot to add the actual code to make it work.

In Amarok 2 Podcasts are implemented in classes derived from PodcastProvider. There can be mutliple providers, which allows for instance podcast syncing between Amarok and an iPod.
The default provider is SqlPodcastProvider. This is where the auto-download function should get implemented.

This is a nicelly contained and not to steep introduction to Amarok development. So it's an excelent Junior Job.
If progmanos or anyone else would like to have a go at it, contact me on #amarok on irc.freenode.net. My nickname is Stecchino.

Mike Arthur (mikearthur): Naked Generations

System & Utilities

Came across a really interesting blog on the web the other day called Naked Generations. It’s a company-run blog for a for-profit company, but I must say it’s definitely one of the most interesting blogs I read (out of over a hundred).

Apparently I’m a member of Generation Y as I was born in 1984. As I’ve been working in the last few years, especially in my time at BT, I’ve found myself having a very different attitude to my older coworkers. I’ve sometimes felt that maybe I’m just a “rebel” and need to learn to conform, but reading this blog has been a bit of a wake-up call in helping me to realise why I do some of the things I do and how I can be better motivated.

I’d say it’s a must-read if you are either in Generation Y yourself, or you are a manager who has staff from Generation Y working for you and want to understand how to keep them well motivated.

If you want to find out even ...read more...

Harri Porten: Local Free Software Community meeting

System & Utilities

On Saturday the non-profit association eXis-unlimited.org had organized the meanwhile second meeting of the Free Software community in our home town Hamburg. This time the organizers Sven Reumann and Ozder Abdurrachman had invited into the trading hall of the former coffee exchange in Hamburg’s harbor area. Some pictures can be found here.

The event was well attended and almost 30 users groups and projects presented their agenda, work in progress and meeting details. Among them were representatives from Open Streep Map, Ruby on Rails, OpenSolaris, Chaos Computer Club, working groups of local universities and Scribus. The sidux project handed out freshly burnt CDs of their distribution based on Debian unstable featuring KDE 4.2. Being invited for a short address in our function as a company sponsor I used the opportunity to call for all local KDE developers to come forward and unite. Everyone I got to talk to afterwards had reverted to version 3.5 though and currently wasn’t in the mood for any experiments. :)

Lucas Murray (Zarin): I'm still alive

System & Utilities

I must apologize for the lack of updates, it seems I've been ridiculously busy recently. Everything I had planned to do this year (And I mean everything) has been turned upside down by forces out of my control.

KWin development is still going strong. Martin is working on the cube and I'm having fun obliterating everything else. So far I've written two new effects: Fade desktop and highlight window, the latter of which is one that integrates with Plasma and fades out all windows except one. I'll give more details on them when I make a proper blog update.

So far my plans currently are:

  • Finish the highlight window effect and integrate it nicely with Plasma,
  • Polish taskbar thumbnails so it looks like it's actually on the tooltip and not floating above them,
  • Modularize KWin core so it's easier to write non-compositing features and integrate the existing ones nicer,
  • Merge active desktop borders and active screen edges and expand on the amount of things you can assign to them such as launching the ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): konsolidated

System & Utilities After a long time of waiting for it, I finally tried to port konsole. This was a long awaited application which is supposed to be rather useful for developers (which are currently our main target users). I am still trying to cleanup the patch and getting it into a usable shape to be committed into KDE svn. Also there are still some more problems that will stay for now:

  • for cmd.exe many keys do not work, especially delete, backspace and the arrow keys (so no command history yet). I am not sure how to do this yet, probably this needs some more internal changes.

  • for sh.exe it seems that at least the backspace key is working, but there is no output of the prompt and ls has some strange output too.

For both there is no colored output available yet.
The biggest problem though is that the konsole window can't be made transparent ;-).

To prove it, here is a screen shot:

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): How to get Konsole 4.2 to behave?

System & Utilities Dear lazyweb: My Konsole in KDE 4.2 does not like me. Let me explain myself, i like to use vim for quick text editing and i like using the numeric keypad to type numbers, if i use the "Default (XFree 4)" input method, that doesn't work, and pressing any keypad number makes vim go nuts, so i'm using the "Linux Console" input method.

"Linux Console" works correctly when on a local session but if i log into a remote machine using ssh, then suddenly the Home and End keys start outputing ~ characters. And this all does not happen in xterm so it must be a konsole feature, any idea how can i get rid of it?

Kevin Krammer: Akonadi for application developers

System & Utilities

This week I have been working on an Akonadi tutorial targetted at application developers.

Compare to the Akonadi Resource Tutorial this was rather difficult. Resources have a well defined task and a tutorial can being with a basic implementation and move on to more complex scenarios later on.

An application built for a specific purpose so a tutorial needs to choose a specific task which is neither to complex nor to abstract and still show as much topic related API usage as possible.

So after quite some thinking I decided to base the application of this tutorial on the task of stripping away attachments from e-mails, i.e. allowing the user to save an attachment to disk and have it being removed from the e-mail itself.

As always, any feedback is appreciated!

On Friday January 30, KDE enthusiasts in the Washington DC area got together at Piratz Tavern to celebrate the KDE 4.2 release. We had 17 people attended, some familiar faces from the local LUG and Ubuntu Loco communities and also several new faces. Pirates and ninjas alike had a good time drinking grog, singing pirate songs, and passing around laptops with the latest and greatest.

Fred Emmott (fred87): A slightly different take on “Qt Everywhere”

System & Utilities

Firstly, as a bit of context, I think that in large applications, having a more detailed type system than just "scalar", "array", and possibly objects really helps, and speeds up debugging, and helps bring up errors at compile time instead of runtime, which is always a good thing. I don't see how this doesn't apply to large web applications equally as desktop applications; to an extent, Java servlets seem to be almost what I want; unfortunately, I don't like Java (I won't go into that here) - and I like Qt :)

Because of this, I've started writing FastCGI-Qt, a library to make writing FastCGI applications using C++/Qt as simple as possible - as demonstrated by the example on the first page of the documentation (more are linked at the bottom of that page).

It is currently only tested under Apache HTTPD 2.2 with mod_fastcgi-2.4.6, but supporting other servers is on my to-do list.

The current feature set is:

Aurelien Gateau: Thoughts on Gwenview folder view

System & Utilities

So, KDE 4.2 is finally out, it’s time to switch from bug fix mode to feature implementation mode (even if I am still working at wiping out a few nasty bugs in Gwenview for 4.2.1).

One of the most wanted features I plan to add to the next version of Gwenview is an optional folder sidebar. Since I am going to work on this, I would like to use the opportunity to also rework the way the sidebar is implemented. Right now the sidebar has a few shortcomings:

  • It is too crowded and does not scale well. Sure there are +/- buttons to expand/collapse sidebar groups, but nobody use them (I know that, because otherwise people would complain the expanded/collapsed state is not remembered across sessions!).
  • It’s too focused on operations, rather than information: users often tell me they do not need 3 places to rotate an image (toolbar, thumbnailbar, sidebar).

There are a few possible options:

  1. In browse mode, show a folder sidebar only. In view mode, show a tabbed sidebar containing information and ...read more...

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): Fire Proof

System & Utilities

So hey, I watched this movie a few months ago called Fireproof. It's a christian movie about a firefighter who's having marital troubles with his wife. Now that the movie's out on DVD I'm hearing about it on the radio and it seems like it's becoming kind of a big thing. The fact that this movie even got released in theaters surprised me. I only found out about it the day I saw it because it was in my Dashboard Movies widget (does that work with plasma yet, if so I might be tempted to ditch this Mac thing with KDE 4.2 out and all) :-) Now that it's out on DVD and people are still talking about it I'm all like, "Whaaaaaaaaa? F'real?"

Aaaaanyway, when I first started watching the Movie with my friend (also a christian) I thought it was pretty lame. Five minutes into it I wanted to walk out because the acting just wasn't really "there" and the strory hadn't grabbed me. About 15-20 minutes in it did start to get better. So my question to ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): Computerworld article about KDE and OpenChange

System & Utilities

Rodney Gedda of Computerworld Australia has written an article about my talk at linux.conf.au 2009.

You can see it at http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/274883/openchange_kde_bring_exchange_compatibility_linux?fp=16&fpid=1
and
http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/274883/openchange_kde_bring_exchange_compatibility_linux?pp=2&fp=16&fpid=1

(sorry for the ads, but presumably that is what pays for the site).

I'm not sure it is an entirely accurate reflection of what I intended to say (e.g. “I would not recommend Akonadi in production use,” isn't what I was trying to say - I was talking about the Akonadi OpenChhange resource not being production quality yet, rather than all of Akonadi). I offered to review the article before publication, but no such luck.

Luca Beltrame (einar77): Fishing for ideas

System & Utilities

I have been thinking of doing another Kourse at the KDE Forums, similar to the one that has produced three nice screencasts.

My idea would be to show very brief and focused screencasts, a sort of “how do I…”. I have a few ideas, but I’d like to ask the KDE community at large. I’m mostly interested in showing single features (short videos), preferably of the “eye-opener” kind.

If you have any suggestions, leave a comment.

Davide Bettio (WindowsUninstall): 10 rules for a plasma widgets developer

System & Utilities
  1. Don’t call updateGeometry() during a size constraintsEvent and don’t call resize.
    If you want to keep the same aspect ratio you may be interested in Applet::setAspectRatioMode( ).
  2. If you want to write a new clock widget, you should inherit from libplasmaclock ClockApplet.
  3. Don’t do custom things: use default plasma methods and widgets when possible.
    Some useful methods are: Applet::setBusy( ) if your applet is busy, Applet::setConfigurationRequired( ) if user needs to configure the widget, etc…
    Some useful widgets are: Plasma::CheckBox, Plasma::ComboBox, Plasma::LineEdit, Plasma::PushButton, Plasma::RadioButton, etc…
  4. Don’t reimplement Applet::showConfigurationInterface, reimplement Applet::createConfigurationInterface instead.

    void MyApplet:createConfigurationInterface(KConfigDialog *parent)
    {
    QWidget *widget = new QWidget();
    ui.setupUi(widget); //ui is your configuration interface
    parent->addPage(widget, i18n("General"), icon());
    connect(parent, SIGNAL(applyClicked()), this, SLOT(configAccepted()));
    connect(parent, SIGNAL(okClicked()), this, SLOT(configAccepted()));
    }
  5. Use Plasma::Animator and fast animations (not slower than 150 milliseconds).
  6. Use a standard background when possible.
  7. Avoid installing custom svg graphics when possible.
  8. Load graphics using Plasma::Svg.
  9. Don’t forget that the theme may change while your widget is running.
  10. paintInterface() might be called ...read more...

Kent Hansen: Qt State Machine Framework

System & Utilities

Hopefully there won’t be a public outcry when I claim that most Qt applications can be described as “a set of objects that interact with eachother over a period of time”. It’s the job of Qt to provide APIs that support this process. Today I’d like to focus on the “over a period of time” part.

Whereas class diagrams describe structure, state diagrams describe behavior. This is what a state diagram for a simple checkbox might look like:

In an object-oriented language like C++, there’s usually a one-to-one mapping between the elements of a class diagram and the code — classes are a fundamental part of the language, after all. With state diagrams there isn’t any such direct correspondence, though; they’re foreign tongue.

For “trivial” things (like a checkbox) you can quickly code something that works, of course, without using any concepts from state diagrams directly. However, because of the nature of event-driven programs (most Qt applications are), it’s very easy to end up with a bunch of if- and switch-statements that try to determine what ...read more...

Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Dear usability experts

System & Utilities

I'm puzzled... Why is the KWin desktop grid (which I discovered yesterday) so much more convenient and pleasant to use than Apple's Spaces? It could be the difference in screen resolution -- my Mac is 1920xsomething, my Thinkpad 1024x768, it could be that the whole virtual desktop thing is better implemented in KWin... But I really am not sure what it is that makes me shun spaces because it sucks and actively enjoy KWin's desktop grid...

George Goldberg: Politicians talking “open source”, but this time its in the UK

System & Utilities

I haven’t written a blog entry for ages - so long in fact that it almost resulted in a mutiny against me in #kde-bugs. So, with the fear of angry triagers trying to RESOLVE me and a vaguely relevant BBC article to inspire me, here goes…

This morning I happened to be reading a BBC article when multiple mentions of the “open source software” buzzword caught my eye. It starts like more of the typical ranting about the ever lasting NHS computer system saga, that anyone vaguely aware of British politics will be bored stiff with hearing about by now, but then it goes on:

Instead of awarding long-term contracts to large IT companies they could open up the procurement process to smaller firms using “open source” software.

Grrr… why do they have to mention “smaller firms” and “open source software” together like that (or perhaps I’m just being paranoid).

It recommends the adoption of open data standards across government, in effect creating a common “language” for government IT systems.

This would reduce licensing costs ...read more...
