Paul Adams: What Would You Like To Learn About KDE This Year?

System & Utilities

So, as I plough on with my PhD, my thoughts inevitably turn to KDE Research; something I'm looking forward to spending a lot more time on once my thesis is out of the way.

Most of my work so far in KDE Research has been looking into seeing what we can discover from SVN logs and email is next on my hitlist. But what am I trying to do? Well, those who saw my talk at FOSDEM will know that I am particularly interested in monitoring productivity as KDE migrates away from SVN to.... whatever. The folk of the usability group also continue to do good work; congratulations to Celeste, in particular, who has had a paper accepted to the International Conference on Open Source Systems. Team EBN, of course, continue to do quality checking work.

But what would you like to see come out of KDE Research? Don't forget the whole point of this is to help us learn more about outselves in order to work more effectively. This is only possible if ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): kdesvn-build 1.8

System & Utilities

It’s out. I’m sorry I forgot about the annoying cmake-options bug, otherwise it would have been out sooner.

Besides that bugfix the major change is that the branch, tag, and module-base-path options now do not add the module name for you when making up the final URL (for non-KDE modules), you need to do that yourself. The reason is that many modules are tagged or branched without ending in their module names now, so it was simply impossible without using override-url to check them out.

If you use kdesupport with kdesupport-for-4.2, you need to adjust your tag to read “kdesupport-for-4.2/kdesupport” now.

Sebastian Pipping (sping): libxspf 1.1.0 released (successor of libSpiff)

System & Utilities

With this release libSpiff mutates into libxspf, same thing new name. Under the hood the build system has improved and generation of Qt Assistant-friendly documentation has been added.

The source code moved from a Subversion to a Git repository. Please meet me at the XSPF mailing list to team up on any transition-related issues. Thank you!

Roopesh Chander: Crude canine saves another planet

System & Utilities
Some time back, I started off a planet for NGOs at ngoplanet.org based on rawdog, not long after planetkde's switch to rawdog. NGO Planet does rss, opml and blogs listing, just like planetkde, but takes a different route to do all that (and opinion is divided on whether that's for better or for worse :D).

Instead of using jriddel's rss plugin that powers planetkde (unfortunately, I could not install libxml2 on my hosting provider, which is needed by the rss plugin), it dumps each form of output just by using a different template for each. So, with a minor tweak to rawdog code, rss is dumped using a rawdog template like this and an itemtemplate like this.

For the blog listing, it takes in an additional config parameter called feeditemtemplate that specifies the template for generating ...read more...

Jos van den Oever (vandenoever): Browsing archive files with libstreams

System & Utilities

ArchiveReader is a class in libstreams that allows you to open files embedded in zip, deb, rpm, jar, openoffice, and email files. It is used in the kio slave jstreams:/. This class works like this:

/* create an ArchiveReader that reads files on the local filesystem */
ArchiveReader reader;
reader.addStreamOpener(new FileStreamOpener());

/* read an embedded file */
InputStream* stream = reader.openStream(\"/home/james/archive.zip/package.deb/README.txt\");
doSomethingUseful(stream);
reader.closeStream(stream);

/* list embedded files */
DirLister lister = reader.dirEntries(\"/home/james/archive.zip/package.deb\");
EntryInfo entryinfo;
while (lister.nextEntry(entryinfo)) {
doSomethingUseful(entryinfo.filename);
}

For the next Strigi release DirLister has been much improved. The old implementation contained a simple vector with EntryInfo objects. This implementation would read an entire archive before returning the first entry. Interactive applications like Dolphin would have to wait a long time before they could show something.

The new application has a pointer to a ListingInProgress object which reads entries on demand. So now interactive applications can update their view as more results come in.

When an entire archive is read, the entries in it are cached inside the ArchiveReader object. If the contents of ...read more...

Ivan Cukic (ivan): FAQ: Why is Lancelot a fixed size menu?

System & Utilities

This post is a response to a comment by bleh2 to my last post

In all pre-Vista Windows and KDE1-3 the menu expanded when it needed more space. Short distances for the most common tasks, lots of space if needed. Why did suddenly everyone decide that it’s better to either make your most common apps unreachable or to cram 1234 menu entries into a postage stamp sized menu while wasting 95% of your screen real estate? Lancelot’s got by far the best navigation of these menus but I don’t understand the basic rationale of having it fixed size. Have it start like it is now, but when you click a sub-menu it just expands horizontally and vertically until everything fits or until it runs out of desktop.

The /expanding/ menus versus the fixed size ones is a war that will not be ended soon I think :)

One of the things that Kickoff uses in its defence concerning its way of application browsing is that if the user has to ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): .desktop file security

System & Utilities

As most of you may have seen by now, foobar had made a post 10 days ago called “How to write a Linux virus in 5 easy steps.” That blog post was later covered on Slashdot and LWN, and describes the lack of security around .desktop launcher files. These .desktop files do lots of things, but one of their most prominent uses is in program launching.

Why are they needed? Well, they give a lot of extra metadata to executable programs, such as the icon to show, the friendly name, i18n translations, program working directory, whether a terminal-viewer should be launched in association, etc. Ever since their introduction, a .desktop file has been able to complete launching its associated program without being executable (that is, without have the +x bit set on the file for POSIX systems).

foobar makes a good point that in such a situation .desktop files are hardly any different than .vbs files in their effect if they were to be transported over email, and even if a ...read more...

Benjamin Meyer (icefox): Arora 0.5 and Oxygen Style

System & Utilities

Tonight I tagged Arora 0.5. And with every release starts development on the next release. One of the things I would like to improve for 0.6 is integration with KDE4. To help do that I have started a wiki page of KDE4 items. When using Arora on KDE a bunch of the first issues everyone runs into are really just improvements that need to be made to the Oxygen style. Little things like returning the KDE icons for back/forward, returning the correct size check boxes in QtWebkit, and supporting the new QTabBar style hints in Qt 4.5 will really help Arora fit in better with KDE 4. Of course these fixes will benefit everyone who uses QtWebKit in their application and anyone KDE application that uses the new QTabBar features. So I am putting out a request for help. If you happen to have your box all setup for KDE development and have a few minutes to spare helping making Oxygen an even better style would be most ...read more...

Nick Shaforostoff (shaforostoff): First results implementing OpenDocument translation workflow

System & Utilities This is how OpenDocument translation workflow will look like in KDE 4.3: Screencast

Don't try to do it yourself right now ;) This requires the latest (unreleased) versions of translate-toolkit trunk and kdelibs trunk.

Implications of achieving this
I plugged kross nicely into Lokalize: I introduced 'project kinds' -- each has it's own set of scripts, so that you have 'Merge into ODF' for OpenDocument translation, and 'Widget Text Capture' for GUI/KDE projects.

These actions, as well as few others (see kde l10n svn and kde ru l10n svn for their plug example) are written in python. I plan to create a separate scripting API docs for Lokalize, but for now you can just rgrep Q_SCRIPTABLE KDE/kdesdk/lokalize to get list of available methods.

This mechanism will make implementing business-logic easy. Examples are action to send your translation to project's editor (translation team leader) and action to commit your work to [svn] repository if you have write access to it.

Thanks
I want to say thanks to Sebastian Sauer for ...read more...

Ivan Cukic (ivan): Post 4.2 features - part 1 [Lancelot]

System & Utilities

New system buttons

One of the first requested features, even before the Lancelot brainstorm thread on KDE forums was to change the system buttons from Lock Session, Log Out and Switch User to something else because some users don’t use some of the buttons. Radically changing the Lancelot behaviour this late in its age of existence is something that can not be considered. But the users should have some freedom.

The point is that the buttons are now configurable. Open the configuration dialogue, and you’ll see a new section. Click any of the three buttons you see, and you’ll get a list of possible actions to assign to it.

Matthias Kretz (Vir): how to do includes right

System & Utilities Author

Perhaps you remember such a discussion on core-devel quite some time ago. It resulted in a section on Techbase about the topic, with all the explanations why to do it that way. Too bad that the people who create the Microsoft Visual Studio stdlib headers haven't read it. This is too stupid...

I have a project at university where all the filenames start with a long prefix - and that prefix is the same for all the files. Tedious for opening files, even with auto-completion. So I 'ln -s'ed all the files to a filename without the prefix. This broke my build on Windows (the files are made available to a Windows running in VirtualBox, which is why I can use ln -s) as there now was a Math.h file in the directory. And guess what the MSVC compiler did... The <cmath> include has a

#include <math.h>
line which made MSVC include my Math.h file instead of the math.h file lying in the same directory as ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): More on Plasma in 4.3

System & Utilities Coming out of Tokamak, the Plasma team has been setting goals for 4.3, putting together Summer of Code ideas and writing code for 4.3 that generally kicks ass and takes names later. Expect noticeable improvements to extenders, theming, layout flexibility, performance and general I-can't-believe-it's-not-butter-ness.

A few big picture things we're also starting to focus on in a more serious fashion now that the 4.0->4.2 journey is firmly lodged in the year known as 2008 include (other than content creation tools, which I covered in my last blog entry) the educational desktop, a netbook/MID appropriate interface and a simple media center mode for the traditional desktop set up.

(Yes, we'll also be working on the stuff we've already shipped, working out bugs, performance issues and bugs as we go... but that's a "detail" item. ;)

To be honest, the development line up for the 4.3 and 4.4 releases in Plasma scare the hell out of me .. but in a good way. You see, if I'm feeling comfortable, we're not pushing hard enough. If I'm terrified, we're pushing ...read more...

Christoph Feck (kdepepo): Hello Planet!

System & Utilities

The planetkde bot was very eager to see what’s there to get, and found a two day old post of mine. “Nevermind”, he thought, “just aggregate it!” … without giving me a chance to introduce myself, so I will now make up for that.

Some of you may know me as “kdepepo” on freenode, that quiet lurker on #kde-cafe and other KDE and openSUSE related channels. Being a teacher, I like to help others, so I sometimes help answering questions regarding C++ Qt programming on #qt.

Others may know me as “skulptor”, because of my work on Skulpture. Or you may have seen me as “cfeck”, as a irregular committer to KDE svn, currently trying to improve Moty’s deKorator window theming engine.

But all of my friends know me as “Christoph”, and if you want, just call me this way.

In this spirit: Hello Planet!

Trever Fischer (workman161): KPackageKit 0.4.0 Released!

System & Utilities

3 days ago, Daniel announced the release of KPackageKit 0.4.0. Outside of the lone message on packagekit-devel, I haven’t seen much hooplah, so here I am writing up a news release for the planet. Our last release was way back before October, so quite a few new features were added since then:

  • A better transaction status dialog
  • Search Filters
  • Distribution Upgrades
  • Power management control
  • Install unsigned local files
  • An updates available tray icon
  • Global PackageKit notifications
  • Grouping of search results

Along with some neat minor features:

  • Show time remaining in the progress bar
  • Save grouping, subpackages, and ‘newest’ filter settings
  • New fancy-pants package details view

For those not in the know, KPackageKit is the KDE frontend to PackageKit, the unified package management system. PackageKit doesn’t replace your distro’s default manager (eg, yum, apt, rpm, or dpkg), but it improves upon it by giving a generic D-Bus interface. Frontends (like KPackageKit, or gnome-packagekit) use these simple calls to do normal tasks like updating your system, checking for updates, and installing packages.

Matt Rogers (mattr): new on bugs.kde.org - aliases

System & Utilities

I turned on aliases awhile ago on bugs.kde.org. Aliases are a way for people to reference a bug number based on some nice text that is given to the bug rather than by the bug number. You don’t have to give every bug an alias, but it seemed like a useful feature to have. If nobody likes it, then we can turn it off, but hopefully people are already using it and i’m just not aware of it. :)

Andrew Stromme (astromme): And sometimes it’s not my bug

System & Utilities

It’s time for another update on my work on the remember the milk plasmoid. It’s shaping up nicely, and I’m often amazed at how nicely the different Qt and KDE libraries fit together. However, there are those times when I bang my head against a wall for hours trying to fix some bug or implement some feature only to discover that it wasn’t my problem in the first place.

This happened to be the case with drag and drop support for the plasmoid. It started off with an itch to have basic drag and drop support to change a task’s priority. I wanted to be able to move around my tasks visually instead of going into an editor and changing the priority. It turns out that QGraphicsScene/QGraphicsView had some bugs when dealing with widgets on canvas. For those who haven’t worked with woc, it’s a great idea. Putting any graphical widget onto a canvas that already has support for transformations and scaling and the works is a wonderful thing to be able to do, and it allows for things like ...read more...

Will Stephenson: Gauging demand for Qyoto (KDE 4 C# Bindings)

System & Utilities

A helpful chap just popped into #opensuse-kde and asked about our c# bindings. It turns out that our packages exclude them in the most violent way possible. This made me curious as to why, as AFAIK they are a high quality binding that exposes the Joy Of KDE to an untapped pool of developer talent. The reason is lack of obvious demand and anyone to test them. So I'd like to know, if we enable building the (stable) Qyoto bindings for C#, would you use them?

(No, they won't be on the default install, nor will installing openSUSE's KDE pull in mono unless you choose to. Don't throw your peanuts at me.)

Jason A. Donenfeld (zx2c4/jdonenfeld): WebKit in Konqueror/KDE

System & Utilities

Dear PlanetKDE/Lazyweb,

I am curious about the future of KHTML in the face of WebKit. Three questions come to mind:

  1. Why does KDE use KHTML when WebKit is faster, more compatible, etc?
  2. Why does Konqueror use KHTML as default instead of WebKit?
  3. Will KHTML be moved out of the main tree?

As far as I can see, it is commonly accepted fact that WebKit is a faster and more compatible engine than KHTML. WebKit was ported to Qt in 4.4, and Qt 4.5 provides some critical enhancements. From these two points, the three questions above naturally follow. If the situation for KHTML was completely hopeless, then it never would have made KDE 4.0 or the present API would be converted into a wrapper for QtWebKit. But this is not the case, so presumably the KHTML team has high hopes for the project. I wonder what the team’s response is to these questions. Undoubtedly they have thought a lot about KHTML vs WebKit and find WebKit a worthwhile project. What’s the deal?

Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 on EeePC Mini Review

System & Utilities I was going to continue my series of KDE 4.2 reviews, but two weeks ago I've installed KDE 4.2 on my EeePC and couldn't wait any longer to share my experience with that.

And yeah, I even take it with me when I go out with my friends :)

My 901 came with Xandros and heavily customized KDE3. It was certainly ok, but I wanted the real operating system and after a short research on the available options, I installed Ubuntu Eee which really was Ubuntu 8.04 customized for EeePC. The current version of this ...read more...

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: More Goo!

System & Utilities Some people might think that we have had more than enough "OMG WORLD OF GOO IS GREAT AND RUNS NATIVELY ON LINUX!!!" posts... Well, they are wrong! So here is another one! :-)

I just bough the game, and the post-demo levels are just as crazy, inventive and plain fun as the levels in the demo. So go buy the game already. Lets prove that there is a viable marked for high quality games on Linux: http://2dboy.com/

And while you are at it, grab the free soundtrack as well: http://kylegabler.com/WorldOfGooSoundtrack/

Now back to playing Wo... uhm.... Working! yeah, Working, thats it..
