Wade Olson: A twist on the Mojave Experiment

System & Utilities

The Mojave Experiment.”  Sounds like science fiction.  Like the Manhattan Project.  But with lasers.

Does anyone remember more innocent times (a couple of months ago) when Microsoft was still trying to get you believe that Vista was a consumer perception problem and not a debacle?  Their sleight-of-hand marketing campaign that boiled down to, “It’s not us, it’s you.”  There’s a reason it doesn’t work in break-ups and a reason that doesn’t work with multi-million dollar ad campaigns.  The results of that experiment were so conclusive and reassuring that they promptly decided to release a brand new OS ASAP.  Why didn’t they use this experiment on their own execs?

Well, some cheeky bastards at ZDNet Australia have taken this experiment and turned it on its head.  Or done an orthogonal experiment.  Or made a perpendicular point.  Here’s the video (in flash on their site).  If only WordPress would let me directly embed their video.

Now, I’m sure this will fuel the fire that “KDE just just copying ...read more...

Artur Souza (MoRpHeUz): Tokamak II

System & Utilities

I just finished my small presentation for tomorrow and I’m already at the boarding gate. It looks like that the fligth is empty, just a few people here and most of them are europeans going back home after holidays.

At this time nobody stopped me at the security check, what is a miracle because every time I have to open my handbag. It’s really hot here and very cold at Porto so I’ll problably have what they call ‘thermal shock’ hehe.

I have to board now, so…..see you ;)
Ah, almost forgot to say that this is my first post from my n810..

Daniel Molkentin (danimo): Qt Creator RC 1 Out For Your Testing Pleasures

System & Utilities With the awesome Qt Software guys in Oslo shipping a Release Candidate for Qt 4.5, we here at Qt Software Berlin couldn't help but release a RC on our own. Presenting Qt Creator RC 1, a.k.a. 0.9.2 (Don't ask, we just like the number). This version has seen quite some polishing, e.g.
  • Improved user interface with feedback option for your feedback
  • "Fake Vim" mode for VIM lovers
  • Improved Version Control Support (Perforce, Git and Subversion)
If you got curious you can get more details from our lovely team-member-in-Norwegian-exile Kavindra and the binaries from the Qt Creator page.

Andreas Pakulat: KDevelop4 Beta1

System & Utilities

Yes, finally we managed to get the code into shape to do a first beta release of KDevelop4. See the dot article for some more information and where to get the source/binaries. The highlights are of course the awesome things David did for C++ support and the cmake support by Aleix.

On a side note: I’m also getting back to working on KDevelop4/win32, currently debugging some problems with DUChain. The good news is: Latest trunk already compiles and opens projects, the bad news: This is not part of the beta. I’m pretty confident though that the next beta will include win32 support.

Harald Hvaal (metellius): A binary package-based system with own patches?

System & Utilities

I’m increasingly getting an urge to expanding my hackings into other parts of kde, as to actually fix the small things that annoy me myself. There is only one problem though; I am very happy with the updated packages the kubuntu team supplies, and especially with my small laptop being my only available system, keeping a constantly complete self-compiled environment is something I don’t want to do.

So I’m wondering, maybe there is a middleway? Maybe there is a way I can for example get the source for the plasma package, hackety-hack up a small feature patch, send the patch off to review, commiting and whatnot, and while all this is happening, be able to keep these few patches in my own system easily, even with all the other parts of the system being based on packages.

For the apps that I regularly hack on (ark and kiten) I actually have placed empty placeholder packages in the system and compile them myself, but for larger system packages I also want the various improvements and settings that the packagers ...read more...

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): Bonjour, what services are in this location?

System & Utilities

I just committed a KDE 4 port of the SLP kioslave into playground. The KDE 3 version might be at least known to the OpenSuse users, as Novell is a strong supporter of the Service Location Protocol (SLP, srvloc), and so it had been developed in some Suse repository and always been installed with the OpenSuses.

So far it’s a 1:1 port, perhaps with new bugs introduced by the port:
SLP kioslave ported to KDE 4

Why did I do this port? I am looking to see of there could be a better presentation of the units and services in a network, e.g. in Konqueror, Dolphin and the filedialog. I was at least impressed by the environment view of Sugar.

Before I ported the SLP kioslave I had made myself a little familiar with the zeroconf kioslave residing in the module kdenetwork, for the ...read more...

Richard Dale: Creating QMetaObjects from GObject Introspection data

System & Utilities

With the next Akademy and GUADEC being co-located in Gran Canaria, I thought it would be nice to do a bit of 'cross-desktopping'. My Gnome friend, Alberto Ruiz, is organizing the Gtk+ 3.0 Theming API Hackfest with some GTK hackers along with Jens Bache-Wiig from Qt Software. That is really good news as it means they'll be thinking about making the toolkits apis compatible at the look and feel level right from the start.

My own idea for improving toolkit inter-operability is so see if it is possible to generate Qt's runtime introspeciton data in the form of QMetaObjects, from a GObject introspection repository and vice versa. So a Qt program looking at a GTK class would see slot names in camel case using Qt datatypes such as QStrings, qreals and QList types, and it would be able to connect Qt signals to the GTK slots as though they were native.

I began looking into how GObjects worked when Norbert Frese started a discussion on the kde-core-devel mailing list about a GIO-KIO bridge that he was working ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): on the road again

System & Utilities

so in three hours my alarm is going to go off, and I’ll have to head out to the airport yet again. somehow I find myself blogging instead of sleeping, though.

I haven’t touched plasma this week - I’ve been busy catching up on homework, then trying to get ahead so that I can ignore it during tokamak. :) it’ll be great to see the plasma team in person and get some solid hacking time in. whee :)

so, um, yeah. I’m still alive, and I get to go to portugal! woo! the amount of travel I’ve done in the last year has been kinda crazy. crazy awesome.

I think I’m gonna pass out now. more blogs will come, with code. mmm, code. (actually, I did some haskell programming on hte weekend for homeork. that was fun. and hurt my brain.)

Zack Rusin (zrusin): Latest changes

System & Utilities I actually went through all my blog entries and removed spam. That means that you won't be able to find anymore links to stuff that can enlarge your penis. I hope this action will not shatter your lives and you'll find consolation in all the spam that you're getting via email anyway. And if not I saved some of the links. You never know, I say.
I also changed the template, I'd slap something ninja related on it, but I don't have anything that fits. Besides nowadays everyone is a graphics ninja. I'm counting hours until the term will be added to the dictionary. So my new nickname will be "The Lost Son of Norway, Duke of Poland and King of England". Aim high is my motto.

As a proud owner of exactly zero babies I got lots of time to think about stuff. Mostly about squirrels, goats and the letter q. So I wanted to talk about some of the things I've been thinking about lately.

David Nolden: Automatic include-directives and forward-declarations

System & Utilities

Missing Include Completion
C++ is a great and powerful programming-language. Yet it has the downside against some other languages, that you always have to deal with include-directives or forward-declarations before you can use a class.

This is a factor that often motivates me not to create too many different source-files, although design-wise that would make sense. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just start hacking without caring about the whole visibility stuff? Especially when you have to do the same includes again and again, and already know the library you’re using and it’s classes, this is nothing more than an annoyance.

I had implemented a feature to automatically add include-directives within KDevelop 4 about a year ago, but it wasn’t as comfortable and useful as it could be. During the last days, I’ve taken the time to polish up this feature so it’s worth a blog-post.

The whole thing is based on the DUChain, and it respects all declarations from within the global duchain store. This means that from the moment on that KDevelop has processed ...read more...

Josef Spillner: KDE 4.2 Release Party in Frankfurt am Main

System & Utilities

Last Friday, January 30, Dominik Haumann and me went from Darmstadt to Frankfurt am Main to join the KDE 4.2 Release Party in the Brotfabrik. It wasn't the biggest such event, but had a nice mix of users and contributors, of locals and guests.

I had my N810 with me, which was unfortunately out of battery that evening, as well as a similarly-spec'd subnotebook which proves that the latest KDE compiles and runs just fine on a 400 MHz processor with 256 MB RAM. Not fast as light, but a lot more usable than it might appear at first.

The photo below shows, in clock-wise order starting from the lower left: Meinhard, Andreas (openSUSE website guy), Manuel (Quassel IRC client guy), Claudia (e.V. office), Jens-Michael (Marble hacker), Isabel (Linux-something, sorry can't decipher, and not visible on this photo), Andreas (a KDE-Win32 user), Thomas (DE-CIX), Lukas (Linux Lancers captain), Alex (of CMake fame), Dominik (of Kate fame), myself and Michael (KHotKeys). Richard Dale: QtRuby, Korundum and Wt::Ruby ported to Ruby 1.9.1

System & Utilities

The implementation of the Ruby runtime in the new 1.9.1 release is a complete rewrite based on a virtual machine, YARV, instead of interpreting the AST directly and slowly like the previous version. So I was expecting that there would be a lot of changes required for QtRuby as it has a fair amount of C interface code. However, it turned out to be not so bad at all, and I'm pleased to announce that the QtRuby, Korundum and Wt::Ruby projects will all now build against Ruby 1.9.1 as well as the older 1.8.x versions.

A couple of months ago Davor Ocelic posted a patch from a 'Mr Napalm' (clearly da bomb!) to make QtRuby 1.4.10 build with Ruby 1.9. Davor ported the code in the patch to the trunk version of QtRuby and we added that. There were some changes though that needed some '#ifdefs' on the Ruby version and conditional compilation, and I added them yesterday.

The cmake detection for 1.9 doesn't seem to be 100% yet, and it got a bit confused with my 1.8 installation in ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): when the fever breaks

System & Utilities The day after I returned home I came down with a horrendous fever that left me shivering in bed for the last two days. It finally broke yesterday evening and I'm feeling 90% now, which is about 10,000% better than I was a few hours earlier.

Better than beating the bug, however, was news that we now have an "official" KDE review board installation. We've been using review board in Plasma for nearly a year now and it's been a terrific tool in helping with the peer review of non-trivial patches before they go in. My experience tells me that once code goes in, the chances of fixing problems with it often go down slightly, or even dramatically depending on whether the submitter is a regular contributor or not.

What makes a patch "non-trivial" also varies in definition depending on the submitter and we've found that review board can be a nice set of training wheels for new contributors. Most importantly, though, it prevents losing patches on mailing lists. Since review board integrates with mailing ...read more...

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): Amarok Junior Job: Auto-download new podcasts

System & Utilities A recent comment by progmanos on the post of the 2.0.1.1 release reminded that I still have to implement Podcast episode auto-downloading. In the hurry to get 2.0 released I did add the config option, but forgot to add the actual code to make it work.

In Amarok 2 Podcasts are implemented in classes derived from PodcastProvider. There can be mutliple providers, which allows for instance podcast syncing between Amarok and an iPod.
The default provider is SqlPodcastProvider. This is where the auto-download function should get implemented.

This is a nicelly contained and not to steep introduction to Amarok development. So it's an excelent Junior Job.
If progmanos or anyone else would like to have a go at it, contact me on #amarok on irc.freenode.net. My nickname is Stecchino.

Mike Arthur (mikearthur): Naked Generations

System & Utilities

Came across a really interesting blog on the web the other day called Naked Generations. It’s a company-run blog for a for-profit company, but I must say it’s definitely one of the most interesting blogs I read (out of over a hundred).

Apparently I’m a member of Generation Y as I was born in 1984. As I’ve been working in the last few years, especially in my time at BT, I’ve found myself having a very different attitude to my older coworkers. I’ve sometimes felt that maybe I’m just a “rebel” and need to learn to conform, but reading this blog has been a bit of a wake-up call in helping me to realise why I do some of the things I do and how I can be better motivated.

I’d say it’s a must-read if you are either in Generation Y yourself, or you are a manager who has staff from Generation Y working for you and want to understand how to keep them well motivated.

If you want to find out even ...read more...

Harri Porten: Local Free Software Community meeting

System & Utilities

On Saturday the non-profit association eXis-unlimited.org had organized the meanwhile second meeting of the Free Software community in our home town Hamburg. This time the organizers Sven Reumann and Ozder Abdurrachman had invited into the trading hall of the former coffee exchange in Hamburg’s harbor area. Some pictures can be found here.

The event was well attended and almost 30 users groups and projects presented their agenda, work in progress and meeting details. Among them were representatives from Open Streep Map, Ruby on Rails, OpenSolaris, Chaos Computer Club, working groups of local universities and Scribus. The sidux project handed out freshly burnt CDs of their distribution based on Debian unstable featuring KDE 4.2. Being invited for a short address in our function as a company sponsor I used the opportunity to call for all local KDE developers to come forward and unite. Everyone I got to talk to afterwards had reverted to version 3.5 though and currently wasn’t in the mood for any experiments. :)

Lucas Murray (Zarin): I'm still alive

System & Utilities

I must apologize for the lack of updates, it seems I've been ridiculously busy recently. Everything I had planned to do this year (And I mean everything) has been turned upside down by forces out of my control.

KWin development is still going strong. Martin is working on the cube and I'm having fun obliterating everything else. So far I've written two new effects: Fade desktop and highlight window, the latter of which is one that integrates with Plasma and fades out all windows except one. I'll give more details on them when I make a proper blog update.

So far my plans currently are:

  • Finish the highlight window effect and integrate it nicely with Plasma,
  • Polish taskbar thumbnails so it looks like it's actually on the tooltip and not floating above them,
  • Modularize KWin core so it's easier to write non-compositing features and integrate the existing ones nicer,
  • Merge active desktop borders and active screen edges and expand on the amount of things you can assign to them such as launching the ...read more...

Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): konsolidated

System & Utilities After a long time of waiting for it, I finally tried to port konsole. This was a long awaited application which is supposed to be rather useful for developers (which are currently our main target users). I am still trying to cleanup the patch and getting it into a usable shape to be committed into KDE svn. Also there are still some more problems that will stay for now:

  • for cmd.exe many keys do not work, especially delete, backspace and the arrow keys (so no command history yet). I am not sure how to do this yet, probably this needs some more internal changes.

  • for sh.exe it seems that at least the backspace key is working, but there is no output of the prompt and ls has some strange output too.

For both there is no colored output available yet.
The biggest problem though is that the konsole window can't be made transparent ;-).

To prove it, here is a screen shot:

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): How to get Konsole 4.2 to behave?

System & Utilities Dear lazyweb: My Konsole in KDE 4.2 does not like me. Let me explain myself, i like to use vim for quick text editing and i like using the numeric keypad to type numbers, if i use the "Default (XFree 4)" input method, that doesn't work, and pressing any keypad number makes vim go nuts, so i'm using the "Linux Console" input method.

"Linux Console" works correctly when on a local session but if i log into a remote machine using ssh, then suddenly the Home and End keys start outputing ~ characters. And this all does not happen in xterm so it must be a konsole feature, any idea how can i get rid of it?

Kevin Krammer: Akonadi for application developers

System & Utilities

This week I have been working on an Akonadi tutorial targetted at application developers.

Compare to the Akonadi Resource Tutorial this was rather difficult. Resources have a well defined task and a tutorial can being with a basic implementation and move on to more complex scenarios later on.

An application built for a specific purpose so a tutorial needs to choose a specific task which is neither to complex nor to abstract and still show as much topic related API usage as possible.

So after quite some thinking I decided to base the application of this tutorial on the task of stripping away attachments from e-mails, i.e. allowing the user to save an attachment to disk and have it being removed from the e-mail itself.

As always, any feedback is appreciated!

Celeste Paul (seele): Washington DC KDE 4.2 Release Party

System & Utilities

On Friday January 30, KDE enthusiasts in the Washington DC area got together at Piratz Tavern to celebrate the KDE 4.2 release. We had 17 people attended, some familiar faces from the local LUG and Ubuntu Loco communities and also several new faces. Pirates and ninjas alike had a good time drinking grog, singing pirate songs, and passing around laptops with the latest and greatest.
