Guillermo Antonio Amaral (gamaral): Looking for Work

System & Utilities

It’s that time again, I just finished a rather large project and now I need to get some work.

hackergochi

Anybody interested in hiring a Software Architect / C-C++ Developer, I can work per-objective,
part-time or full-time. I have direct development experience in both GNU/Linux and FreeBSD,
Windows using MinGW and/or the Qt Framework; I also have experience developing device drivers
and random kernel hacks.

I’m also available for development workshops, if your company or institution needs an introduction
to POSIX development, ANSI C++, Qt 4, etc, I can help.

If you have any questions, please contact me via email gamaral+jobs@amaral.com.mx
or in IRC gamaral @ irc.freenode.net or gamaral|away @ irc.freenode.net.

David Nolden: Typedefs in Templates, and Code-Completion

System & Utilities

Sometimes you have to decide between being “correct”, and being user-friendly.

Also, sometimes you have to do one painful change with many regressions, to reach an ultimately better state.

I hope I had to do the last such step before the stable KDevelop release(Though you never know). I have changed the internal representation of the C++ DUChain, so typedefs spawn custom types, instead of being just pointers to the targets. This is not exactly what the C++ standard says, but this means that KDevelop will no more replace std::string with “std::basic_string<blah bla>” if you implement a function or do other simple refactoring stuff.

There is some problems with generally doing this though, because for example in a template container like “std::list”, you want the types in the completion-list not to show “std::list::reference_type”, which also is a typedef, but instead the type you gave to the container. So how should this be done to be most userfriendly, while still staying correct enough?

I’ve implemented this simple logic for the completion-list: If the typedefs target type recursively contains less template ...read more...

System & Utilities Library

I wanted to use conversion code outside runner so now all conversion code is in a library. It also has few new categories: currency, energy, fuel efficiency, power, pressure and time.

Unit Converter Runner

Converter runner now shows all conversions that text matches.

Unit Converter Widget

I got permission from Gerhard (original author of unit converter widget) to convert widget to use same library converter runner uses. Now widget has same categories and units runner has.

Some people have complained that there is no way to know what units Unit Converter Runner supports. Hopefully these changes to runner and widget help also on that.

Hmmm, no wonder my head hurts...

Sebastian Trueg (trueg): Nepomuk and the Google Summer of Code - second try: I want your ideas!

Comments on the last blog regarding Nepomuk and the GSoC were rare. Since I am not sure if that is due to a misleading blog title or due to an actual idea shortage, I am trying again.
Please post your ideas as comments to this blog entry. See the KDE GSoC ideas page to check for projects I already proposed. Go nuts!

Stefan Majewsky: KDE at CeBIT (day 3)

System & Utilities

I’m writing again from the KDE booth at CeBIT (hall 6, stand F50). Although our booth’s location is suboptimal, many users and business representatives are visiting us to checkout what’s new in KDE. Eckhart set up a Windows XP virtual machine with KDE 4.2.1 running on it, and Jos Poortvliet, Alexander Neundorf, and Rolf Eike Beer have joined us to bring the message of free and open source software to the visitors. (Jos also demoed the new Air theme; I’m really looking forward to this in 4.3.)

You can find an image of our booth in an article on Linux-Community.de. Note how insomnia has conquered my face. ;-)

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): Support for ‘long double’ in Qt tests.

System & Utilities

Qt supports most types for most compilers…… but long double.  I do not know why. When asking on #qt (IRC), people say that nobody seems to care. Well… I do. long double have some use in scientific software at least. If you ever need to use long double in QTest, you will need to add this somewhere in some of your headers used by unit tests.

This is tested with Qt 4.4.2 and 4.5, on linux(gcc 4.3.3) and windows (mingw/gcc 3.4.5).

Once you have this code, you can do things like QCOMPARE() between long double and so on.

namespace QTest {     template <>     inline char *toString<long double>(const long double &t)     {         char *msg = new char[128];         ::snprintf(msg, 128, \"%.123Lg\", t);         return msg;     }     static inline bool qFuzzyCompare(long double p1, long double p2)     {         return (qAbs(p1 - p2) <= 0.00000000000001 * qMin(qAbs(p1), qAbs(p2)));     }     template <>     inline bool Q_TESTLIB_EXPORT qCompare<long double>(long double const &t1, ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Yet more conferences

System & Utilities There's two neat conferences at the beginning of May, at pretty much opposite ends of the earth: the NLUUG spring conference on File Systems and Storage and the Open Tech Summit Taiwan.

The NLUUG conference has Jos van den Oever in it, on Strigi, search, semantics -- after all, storage is fine but you do have to be able to find your stuff in the filesystem for it to be any use.

I'll be at the one in the Netherlands -- my regret being there's not enough days in the year to attend all the useful and interesting tech conferences, because the conference in Taiwan sounds very useful from a licensing, compliance and shiny gadgets point of view.

Chani Armitage (Chani): screensaver security

System & Utilities

woo! I’m finally getting that security code written. I can’t remember when, but sometime in february I made the screensaver’s appletbrowser not show anything from the “application launchers” or “windows and tasks” groups. as of today it can also exclude plasmoids based on their requirements (so long as they tell the truth about what their requirements are) and tell plasmoids what features are forbidden. I’ve used this to make the comic applet safe again. :) for 4.3 it won’t show that “save as” option when it’s on the screensaver.

other requirements will be defined soon… I’ll have a look at what applets are doing, and add stuff as I go… I think the next one will be turning off KRun. having windows open underneath the screensaver isn’t strictly a security risk, but it would still be annoying to find a dozen of them when you unlock your screen.

I’ll mention the added constraints on plasma-devel as I go so that developers can update their plasmoids.

Sven Langkamp (slangkamp): ODF Interoperability: ideal vs. practice

System & Utilities

As KOffice 2.0 is getting closer more and more people are testing it. If you have tested one of the beta releases you might have noticed that a lot of documents don’t look in KOffice like they look in OpenOffice. I’m aware that the KOffice ODF implementation doesn’t support all of ODF at the moment and that there are bugs, but in the last few months I noticed a totally different type of ODF problem is getting more and more important. The problem is that with the increasing number of ODF editors more and more issues show up where the documents are interpreted differently.

I saw an article on Joel on Software which explains the current situation and the way how got there pretty good. While the current ODF situation can’t be compared with HTML (Users don’t write the documents themself, so the number of incompatibilities is limited), the problems are similar. For both there was for a long time a one-to-one market with a domiant product, which defined a pragmatic standard. Now new players ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Nigerian Free Software Conference

System & Utilities As the Free and Open Source Software Nigeria conference is set to start on the sixth of March -- Friday, that is -- I'm in the last stages of packing. Travel advisories say lots of anti mosquito gear, if only because visiting near areas with malaria, dengue and yellow fever makes me think "I want to return home healthy." I'm also packing the last box of KDE booklets that the KDE-India team produced; this means that Pradeepto, Piyush, Sharan, Shashank, Ramki (and whomever I have forgotten) will have reached four continents with their work.

As a bonus, Jonathan Riddell's visa came through at the 11th hour, so he will be attending as well and we can make a unified KDE stand.

Stormy Peters of the GNOME Foundation was kind enough to send me some of her recent materials on business cooperation and community, so I will be presenting that as well (if Mustapha and the organizers let me do ...read more...

Jeff Mitchell (jefferai): Licensing to Kill

System & Utilities

Could FLEXlm be one of the world's worst-designed programs?

They've just rechristened it FLEXnet Publisher, and I can only think it's to try to get away from existing FLEXlm stigmas.  It's so bad that according to a VMware engineer I spoke to on the phone a few months ago, in the next release of ESX (whatever the new name is going to be) they're ditching it to go back to their own serial-number based scheme, entirely because of a large amount of hugely negative customer feedback.  This is only one major release after they switched to it.

Let me describe the structure of it (if I were to go into the user interface issues, this would become far too long a post, so maybe another time).  There's a management daemon, called lmgrd, and vendor daemons.  These vendor daemons are (often along with the management daemon) provided to you, often without an installer and simply as a bunch of files.  There's also quite often a node-locking generator (based on things like hostname, MAC address, and all manner of things easily faked ...read more...

Lorn Potter: in case you missed it…

System & Utilities

Hidden behind the great news about Qt 4.5 and QtCreator 1.0 release, there is this:

Qt Software discontinues Qt Extended

But all is not lost, ye fans of open source phones! The Qt Extended source now lies solely in the hands of the community. You can find an unoffical git repo of Qtopia and Qtextended here

Not sure when this will be updated with 4.4.3..
git clone git://git.asheesh.org/qtopia_snapshot.git

Yes, it is a bit sad when all you have worked for the last 5 years or so gets axed, and we have had a few anxious weeks here in Brisbane finding new things to work on, but hey - when one door closes, another opens!

Qt Everywhere!

and if I may make a personal rant.. would you know it, just barely a week after I bought a mac mini… they announce a new version!

Ariya Hidayat: quattro cinque zero

System & Utilities

Today (three-three-nine, no conspiracy about the chosen date, please!) Qt Software releases Qt 4.5.0!

There are a number of interesting things about this particular release: lots of performance improvements, simultaneous release of Qt Creator 1.0 which enables the Qt SDK package, LGPL as the new license option, and plenty of new and improved features.

Personally this is an exciting release for me, since it contains some of my work since I joined Qt Software (nee Trolltech). Among others, I did a bit of optimizations for Graphics View, touched the low-level graphics stuff at times where I understood it, and of course - my main task - integrated a lot of WebKit features into the QtWebKit module.

Download Qt 4.5 (or via torrents) while it is fresh. Especially with the SDK package, there is no excuse not to learn C++ and Qt anymore.

PS: can you spot me in the ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Fun things in the Canaries (like Akademy)

System & Utilities The SAS in-flight magazine (coming back from Copenhagen, two weeks ago now) had a list of sixteen fun things in Gran Canaria. I'm sure there's more; one of them will be Akademy, hosted by the government of the Canary Islands. GUADEC will be there at the same time, and together the two events are the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit (GCDS). There's both a combined part of GCDS emphasizing the Free Desktop together, and the separate conferences Akademy and GUADEC -- fun for all ages.

To keep track of the sixteen fun things I've ton out the relevant pages; they tell me that Bonchinche Los Jamones is a great (low-key) place for tapas; La Cabaña Criolla is a good grill restaurant; La Puntilla is the place to have lunch -- and it goes on. Plenty of food options, that is. I fully trust the whole GCDS crew to point us in the right direction, like Richard Dale did with beer.

It will be a long cool summer.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Yay, it’s been so long since an uninformed C++ rant.

System & Utilities

You may start by reading The Tailor, off of Planet GNOME.

Back? Good. Let’s deconstruct the points :) (Quotes are abridged and not direct quotes because I don’t feel like doing the copy-editing required)

  • Methods should be virtual by default so inheritance works. Well, inheritance at run-time, since inheritance still works just fine. To be honest this is probably one other thing that could have been different between class and struct, is class having all methods be virtual while you need to specify it with struct, so that you can still write simple classes with little to no overhead, such as QColor for instance. Then again, you could actually spend the 5 minutes it takes to understand non-virtual functions (hey wait, we already know how non-virtual functions work! :) and move on with your life. Also, this is snark’s most frustrating issue with C++… I don’t know if he’s referring to the same language I am but there’s about a half-million things more annoying than virtual in C++.
  • You need to have virtual ...read more...

System & Utilities

Recently, a new version of Gnash was uploaded to Debian by Miriam Ruiz.

The most important thing in the changelog from my point of view is the following:

  • Using KDE4 instead of KDE3

So I kind of had to test how the KDE 4 thingies works.
Youtube: The “videos being watched right now”-animation works, but I can’t actually watch the movies.
Random flash advertisements plays nicely. Unfortunately. I was happy to avoid those.

Conclusion: Some things works, but mostly the annoying things.

Milian Wolff (milianw): PHP support for KDevelop 4 (and eventually Quanta+)

System & Utilities

Hello Planet KDE!

I want to give you a little insight on the current state of PHP support in KDevelop4:

Me and Nikolaus Sams (nsams) are working diligently on a plugin for PHP support in playground. It’s somewhat stable, i.e. we fix any crashes we stumble upon, but I would call it Alpha state at most. It may eat your babies so to speak. Yet I’m happy to say that at least one user is already using it for production (hi leinir ;-) ).

implemented PHP support

Well, here’s a (not complete) list of features that are already working. Though I have to warn you: no screenshots included ;-) It’s actually all very similar to the C++ screenies you can see on the web.

sematic highlighting

Let’s start with a feature that only very recently was added for PHP - semantic highlighting. Niko moved some language independent parts of the C++ plugin from KDevelop to KDevplatform and now PHP has the same code highlighting features as C++.

I personally love this feature since it makes it even ...read more...

Tom Albers: Sysadmin requests

System & Utilities

My blog rate has dropped significantly. That's caused by the fact that microblogging is much more accessible. It's short and to the point. So, the Midi (or Maxi?) blogs are now reserved for longer or more important blogs I guess.

I've a couple of points I want to Midi blog about, for example a view about PIM in the future, or how I hate that everyone tells everyone how bad 4.0.0 was. Maybe something I will do soon, although I better leave the second topic alone, better for my health I guess.

So, now back to subject. Matt Rogers has created a special sysadmin 'product' in bugzilla. Bugs reported against this will end up on sysadmins plate. This way we can quickly assign a certain sysadmin to the task or include other KDE contributors in the conversation. Also we have a quick and accurate view about pending issues, something that tends to get lost in a mailbox quickly.

The bugs are not public, due to the fact that sometimes passwords are in there or sysadmin internals, and we don't ...read more...

Ian Geiser (geiseri): Givin some Kiosktool lovin' and how you can give some too

System & Utilities

So I was notified that commits to KDE are HOT, and I am in serious need of some hotness. What could be more hot than working on Kiosk Tool? Well maybe KHTML, but I don't need love that badly. So back to kiosk tool. Back in KDE 3 Waldo Bastian made up this nice little tool that could give administrators a GUI interface around the kiosk functionality in KDE 3. Well 5 years have passed and the tool was in need of some love. First step was to get the last of the KDE/Qt 3 compatibility code removed. That took most of the day yesterday. Today was spent trying to add a few features to make it easier for 3rd party application developers to add their application's settings to the Kiosktool UI. I broke up the old monolithic XML file into modular ini files that can be installed into the kiosktool application data directory. This allows any application developer to create a custom set of options for administrators to lock down their application.

Now for those of you who have ...read more...
