Ariya Hidayat: what you see is important, how you see it is even more

System & Utilities

In case you miss it, Benjamin just added Google Suggest to Arora, within hours after I showed how to do it in Qt Labs. His BSD-licensed Google Suggest implementation is very lightweight, it is pretty trivial to integrate it to most common applications.

Fabrizio Montesi (fmontesi): RFC: Service-oriented Training

System & Utilities It is some time that I'm thinking about Akademy 2009, and how to make people aware of the potential the integration of Plasma and Jolie are going to bring. The following is what I came up with, and from some early discussions it really looks like something worth doing. Please share your thoughts and comments on this.

The idea is to make a (workshop-like) session about the service-oriented world, with pragmatism in mind. aseigo and ervin have been coerced into helping. It'd be composed by two parts, training and hacking.

Training

The training part would touch these topics (not necessarily in order):
- the Service-Oriented Computing paradigm: what is it, and how can we use it?
- how to exploit the service-oriented paradigm through the Jolie language.
- bridging Jolie and Qt with kevin's latest cool library
- the Plasma::Service+MetaService API explained. Service-oriented plasmoids!
- how to make powerful service compositors/orchestrators in Jolie, and use them as backends for plasmoids or $insert_your_app_here.
- use cases and surprises (?)
- questions and answers

Harald Fernengel: Embedded Widgets source code released

System & Utilities

You may have already seen our Embedded Widgets Demo. We got a lot of good feedback, including lots of requests for the source code. Therefore, I’m happy to announce that the sources are now available.

Within the project you will find a collection of industrial style widgets - mainly for touch screen interaction. In addition there are two example applications (Patient Care and Catalog), which serve as a showcase for these widgets. Here’s a video featuring our lovely Carol:

The emphasis of this demo is on SVG and CSS use and how both these techniques can be combined to build an easy to use, industrial looking
user interface. The target audience for such a UI would for example be an operator in a factory, who is used to physical knobs and turning dials.

Although this demo is mainly targeted at and tested for our embedded platforms (Embedded Linux, Windows CE), it also runs fine on X11 (for example on the N810 with the Qt/Hildon integration), and even on a Mac ...read more...

Zack Rusin (zrusin): Intermediate representation

System & Utilities I've spent the last two weeks working from our office in London. The office is right behind Tate Modern with a great view of London which is really nice. While there I was mainly trying to get the compilation of shaders rock solid for one of our drivers.

In Gallium3D currently we're using TGSI intermediate representation. It's a fairly neat representation with instruction semantics matching those from relevant GL extensions/specs. If you're familiar with D3D you know that there are subtle differences between seemingly similar instructions in both APIs. Modern hardware tends to follow the D3D semantics more closely than the GL ones.

Some of the differences include:
  • Indirect addressing offsets, in GL offsets are between -64 to +63, while D3D wants them >= 0.
  • Output to temporaries. In D3D certain instructions can only output to temporary registers while TGSI doesn't have that requirement.
  • Branching. D3D has both if_comp and setp instructions which can perform essentially any of the comparisons, while we immitate them with a SLT (set on less than) or similar with a IF instruction with semantics of ...read more...

Mauro Iazzi (iazzi): Automatic bindings to C++ libraries

System & Utilities
As I wrote last time, this post will be about lqt, and first of all about what lqt does.

Qt's and KDE's native language is C++, however some people wants to use them in a different language (in my case Lua) so many bindings have been created for these libraries. There are several methods you can use to do this.

The simplest way in principle is to write the bindings by hand: most languages have some way to communicate with C/C++ so, by writing wrappers for all the functions and methods in the library, you can create the modules you want. For example if you have this

int foo(int);

you can write this (in C)
int call_foo(lua_State *L) {
int ret;
int arg;
arg = lua_tointeger(L, 1); /* take the first argument */
ret = foo(arg);
lua_pushinteger(L, ret); /* give the return value to Lua */
return 1;
}

This function can then be used when a Lua script calls foo().

If you had instead "int ...read more...

Wang Hoi (wkai): kimpane applet, ask for review

System & Utilities I just dumplicate the mail and add some more pics :)
Moved to kdereview/plasma/applets/

It's mainly an applet for input methods, so that persons use difference input methods can share the same user interface and the unified systemsettings input method configure integration.
And also include a standalone application and a control module for systemsettings now.

Its main features:

  • Multiple backend support, currently support SCIM and IBus(1.1.0+ version)
  • Able to float out and embbed into panel dynamically, The floating statusbar(a qwidget) is just a view on the same qgraphicswidget.
  • Skin support:
    1. You can choose the skin to follow current plasma theme, then it will auto switch skin when user change plasma theme.
    2. Use custom theme, support install theme from Get Hot New Stuff
    3. Internally use javascript to layout svg, enable the abilities to do adaptive svg layout and "theme" the layout.
  • KCModule based configure, config pages for ui, backends are combined to one dialog.
  • Provide a standalone version with floating statusbar only if you don't want to add the applet to panel.

Its design is simple, just provide a dbus service for input ...read more...

Luca Beltrame (einar77): KDE Brainstorm: after the launch

System & Utilities

Now that the KDE Brainstorm has been launched, it’s time to take a look at the results so far. Currently, the forum hosts 160 threads, approximately one for each idea, and 441 posts. Not bad for the first two days of operation. At the same time, the staff has been working hard to make sure only appropriate ideas (not bug reports, not duplicates…) are on the forum. People have also begun voting, although slowly: it’s understandable, given the fact that there are so many threads in so little time.

There are still some issues here and there. We understand that right now you’re forced to take a look at each thread to see the votes, but our plugin guru sayakb is currently working into that: hopefully you’ll see votes next to threads very soon! Remember, your input is also important to improve Brainstorm, so make sure you let us know if you find a bug or have any request.

I’m satisfied, so far. It clearly shows that there was a need to request features (also shown ...read more...

Richard Johnson (nixternal): Remember The Milk Google Gadget Plasmoid

System & Utilities

Just wanted to drop a quick post about a really quick coding project (ie. 5 minutes) to incorporate a very simple Remember The Milk plasmoid for KDE 4.2.x. I utilized the Google Gadget GTalk code and just very easily implemented the RTM gadget. It works well, it just doesn’t have all of the functionality of other RTM clients. There is a full-blown RTM plasmoid coming soon, but I couldn’t wait and needed something right now.

So if you are interested in using it, you can get the tarball over at KDE-Look.org, or if you need Kubuntu installs, both Intrepid and Jaunty, hit up my PPA.

Sam Duff (Socceroos): Odd, but cool

System & Utilities An Australian company called Kogan (www.kogan.com.au) is preparing to launch its own netbook into the market.

These devices will come shipped with the Ubuntu based gOS. Its good to see that they're not dictated by Microsoft here.

The thing that caught my eye though, was that they said they had also tested other systems on their laptop and were offering to install them if the user wanted. One of the things they listed was KDE4 - amongst all the other Operating Systems they were mentioning. Odd, but hey - they must think its cool!

KDE4 is mentioned at the bottom of this article: Australia's Cheapest Netbook

The specs of the laptop are actually pretty good. The only thing I would say is that they're using a regular HDD, not SSD.

All things considered, its good to see a company of Kogan's size actively push Open Source (and particlarly, KDE4!) into the public's eye. I would be interested to see how these netbooks perform in the real world.

Dominik Haumann: Again System Load Viewer

System & Utilities It's in kdeplasma-addons now will be part of KDE 4.3. For those who can't wait we have released version 0.6 for KDE 4.2. I encourage developers to get their hands dirty and make it look even better. Another idea is to automatically use the plasma colors so it visually integrates better into the desktop. It's more than good enough though, as it has all the features of KDE3's System Monitor and some more (like support for showing all CPUs' usage). Have fun :)

Luca Beltrame (einar77): Bilbo Blogger

System & Utilities

Mtux, of choqok fame, along with another person, has written Bilbo Blogger, a blogging utility for Blogger or any blog that supports Blogger1.0, MetaWeblog and MovableType APIs. It is based on the KDE4 libraries and it includes a WYSIWYG editor, an HTML editor, and a Post Preview function that can even fetch your blog’s CSS to render the entry and see how it looks.

It’s not released yet, but for the daring, you can actually try and compile it. You need to check out and install the blogging library (BlboKBlog) first:

git clone git://gitorious.org/bilbokblog/mainline.git bilbokblog
cd bilbokblog
mkdir build; cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ../
make

followed by make install as root or using sudo.

Then, you need to check out the actual application:

git clone git://gitorious.org/bilbo/mainline.git bilbo
cd bilbo
mkdir build; cd build
cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` ../
make

Again, a make install will do the trick.

After that, you can start the application and create a new blog (see the ...read more...

Paul Adams: What Were You Doing For KDE In 2002 And 2007: Redux

System & Utilities

One of the comments on my last blog post suggested that the improved community work was caused by contributors being more focused on their own apps. This, to me, suggests that, implicitly, the community is reliant on some "expert" coordinators between apps during this time.

This suggestion came from SSJ and, I think, was spot on.

This plot gives an indication of how focused KDE contributors are. Again, you must forgive me for not providing the precise measure; I still don't want to bias your views. In this plot, counter-intuitively (sorry), lower scores show more-focused development.

So, a couple of things to note:

  • I have finally learned how to get GNUPlot to put dates on the x-axis!
  • The general trend has been for KDE contributors to become less focussed as the project has grown. That is, the average contributor is (partially) responsible for more artefacts in SVN over time.
  • There are notable dips in this plot, just at the end of 2001 and a big one in 2007. These ...read more...

Ivan Cukic (ivan): For simpler Lancelot, just choose the categories you want

System & Utilities

This post will be short, I’m tired.

One of the common feature requests was to make the categories shown in the applet customizable - that is, to have the possibility to choose which categories are shown. Well, starting from the current SVN version, you can.

If you don’t use the contacts or documents section, just don’t show them. You could make it show only the applications section thus making Lancelot more simple and more ‘traditional’.

Mind that this only affects the launcher applet itself, when the categories are shown inside it, and not the menu.

In other news…

… a couple of insects known as bugs were squashed, and VIDE the Vim IDE is progressing nicely - I’ve moved Lancelot development away from the Project.vim plugin and similar and started using only Vide plugins…

David Vignoni (davigno): Few things about kdm that do not make much sense to me

System & Utilities

One of the main goals of KDE 4 was to improve the user experience. We knew that to succeed in the desktop market KDE doesn’t have to be just powerful, fast and good looking, but it also needs to be easy to understand and user friendly. It has to give a great user experience.

KDM 4.2.1 login dialog

KDM 4.2.1 login dialog

After a KDE based linux distribution is installed, the first thing the user will use is KDM, KDE’s login manager. Unfortunately, not much work has been done on KDM in terms of usability and interaction. Since we are already very well covered on Oxygen icons, I decided to make an effort to try to understand what are the major KDM problems and how they could be solved.

The scenario for the following considerations it’s a fresh Kubuntu installation with KDE 4.2.1 installed as default.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Documentation KIOSlaves

System & Utilities

KDE has long had a nice collection of useful kioslaves for viewing installed documentation, including viewers for manpages and info pages (used by GNU software).

For KDE 4.2 I had introduced another viewer, this time for Perl’s perldoc documentation, which used a look similar to the appearance at www.kde.org. At the same time I had ported kio_man, the manpage viewer to have a similar appearance.

Unfortunately I didn’t have time to also do likewise for kio_info, the info page viewer. That has now been rectified, as seen in the following image, which shows output from all 3 documentation filters:

Thumbnail view of 3 columns of webpage output

At the same time I factored out the CSS into a common docfilter CSS suite, so that any improvements should fix all the docfilter-type KIOSlaves at once.

Jesper Thomschutz: Facebook on your screensaver.

System & Utilities

Having just moved to a new place (Helsinki) I don't really have that much to do yet. So what do I do on a Sunday afternoon? Lazy programming - that's what!

The goal: To have facebook on my screen saver.

The result: Any iPhone page on your screensaver.

Why? Because it's so much easier/faster to write than an actual facebook applet.

What is it? It's a QWebView that identifies itself as an iPhone, placed on Plasma. Configurable with different "phone themes", and select any page you want.

Where to get it? It's in SVN, under the plasma applets in Playground as kPhone

Have fun, and let me know what you think! :)

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): NetworkManager settings not shared/specified?

System & Utilities Dear lazyweb, please prove me wrong.

I've been having a quick look at how NetworkManager is implemented and from what i see the public DBUS API is only for querying, not editing there. The edition of new networks et al is to be provided by a separate NetworkManager service that has no common API. This has two consequences to me:
* Users that edit/create connections under KDE don't see them under Gnome/Xfce/wathever and viceversa
* You can not write a desktop agnostic program that needs to modify/create networks as you don't know who you have to talk to <-- This is specially ugly

Carsten Niehaus (carsten): Casting an int to a float in Python 2.6

System & Utilities Moin

Does

%d / %d is %f" % (num1, num2, float(num1)/num2)

have any (dis)advantages over

%d / %d is %f" % (num1, num2, float(num1)/float(num2))

? Both work. If one number is a float both are treated as a float, as far as I know.

Does the first line have any (technical) disadvantages over the second?
