Jonathan Thomas (JontheEchidna): Progress! (Not quite there yet)

System & Utilities Since my last post the wallpaper plugin has moved to kdeartwork, so if you're running KDE 4.3 from trunk that's where you'll find it these days.

I just thought I'd give everybody an update on the Weather Wallpaper's status for KDE 4.3. :)
Definite progress is being made, but it still has a ways to go before the new features are ready.

This weekend I implemented user-definable wallpapers, though it doesn't save or load any of these custom associations yet so everything gets lost rather easily. Actually, I implemented that plus a whole advanced settings dialog so that graphics junkies can fine-tune the wallpaper to the level that they could with the default "Image" wallpaper plugin.

Here's a screenshot, which shows fairly well what doesn't work too:

The top bit of the Advanced Settings dialog is where you choose the weather condition and choose a wallpaper for said weather condition. For the sake of ...read more...

Christian Weilbach (whilo): intel and the effects

System & Utilities

Preamble: Haven’t blogged for a *long* time now. I was a bit disappointed because many people don’t take the issues about google monopolizing the web and accumulating information very serious. So I got either not or misread with my long thought about critics for GSoC. But then maybe this is the wrong attitude for open source projects which are there to be creative and not really critical… I’ll post about my thoughts later, for those who are interested in general discussion (uuhhh this smells like the p* word (yes politics ;-)) I also have a imho very good idea in peto to deal with GSoC bad side effects especially…

So I have tried KDE 4 since the first alphas for 4.0 in a Debian lenny build environment and have often tried to use it for every day work. During the last year I have become so frustrated (although I am a bit of a dev with KBlog for KDE as well), that I have switched to Gnome. Gnome is very good at not being frustrating ;-) ...read more...

System & Utilities

Howdy,

quick updates:

  • Moved Solid-Wicd to KDEBase, post coming soon
  • Released polkit-qt 0.9.2, here. Pick it up as soon as you can, K3B is already depending on it, and you want to have a taste of how KCMs can behave greatly with polkit
  • Laters.

    RE[2]: Any netbook users out there?

    System & Utilities

    The RC2 release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring is now available . This RC2 version provides some updates on major desktop components of the distribution, including KDE 4.2.2, GNOME 2.26, X.org server 1.6, and kernel 2.6.29. This RC2 version proposes also nearly all of the 2009 Spring design.

    Cyrille Berger: Karbon 2.0

    System & Utilities Of all the application of KOffice 2.0, the one most ready is trully Karbon. It's also the one for which the progress since 1.6 is trully the most visible, and in 2.0, karbon is mostly a path editor (which is no doubt the central feature of a vector graphics application), and it's already working quiet well, definitively worth a try.

    For a few monthes, I have already been using it, when I have to produce figures for my phd. And while I usually feel more confortable drawing with a pixel application (in other word Krita), I decided to make something more artistic with karbon, here is the result:

    Peter Penz: Information Panel

    System & Utilities Dolphin for KDE 4.3 will have some improvements for the Information Panel. One improvement is that Nepomuk is used to get the meta data, which allows to show a lot more information:

    Currently the meta data titles are internal names used by Nepomuk (e. g. "audioCodec"), but this (hopefully) will be improved until KDE 4.3 so that it is written as "Audio Codec:".

    It is also possible now to configure which informations should be shown:

    Because of Phonon it is possible to play audio files:

    Josef Spillner: Versatile in-game community widgets

    System & Utilities

    Historically, the GGZ approach to consistent multiplayer games on the desktop was to offload all the non-game specific tasks like login, chat and game start into special applications called core clients. After a while, this turned out to be a terrific idea but it contradicted the behaviour of most players. Their usual workflow is to start the game first and then switch to online mode rather than the other way around. For some time now, all the necessary components to allow this alternative path have been available for Gtk+ game integration, but no such widget framework has existed for KDE. (In all fairness, the first game ever with embedded core client support was Widelands which uses SDL.)

    This is now changing: With the introduction of the classes GameCoreClient and KGGZCoreLayer, games can easily integrate either an off-the-shelf multiplayer control panel with a list of players and running games, or pieces thereof through the lower-level EmbeddedCoreClient class. Both widgets and standard actions like connect to game as spectator or launch new game are supported by ...read more...

    Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): Korgac icon, new version.

    System & Utilities
    The last version of the Korgac icon was not making most people happy for it had a Warning feeling to it, the "!" was not working dough it seamed like a good idea wen I was making it. The bell was the way to go, but I had some bad experiences making realistic bells in the past.
    So the idea pooped out in my head to make the bell in a more figurative way using the usual information signs we use in Oxygen icon set...

    System & Utilities

    I think it’s funny how often you see the phrase “…I know it’s not a benchmark, but I get XX fps with glxgears…”. If you actually did understand that it’s not a benchmark then you wouldn’t use it as one.  *sigh*

    Isn’t it about time someone threw out that fps printf in glxgears?

    Jason A. Donenfeld (zx2c4/jdonenfeld): Amarok Scriptable Service for ZX2C4 Music

    System & Utilities

    As promised, I’ve written in under 100 lines of JavaScript (QtScript) a service for Amarok that plugs into ZX2C4 Music (ReadMe for ZX2C4 Music, Source for ZX2C4 Music). Obligatory screenshot:
    Amarok Scriptable Service for ZX2C4 Music
    The Amarok scripting API is very slick, especially the scripted services API.

    It is not now configurable and is rather inefficient because getlisting.php does not support very complex queries (though I do take advantage of its sorting on lines 54-57), but this will be changed by the time I release an installable version of the script. Currently, it downloads a listing of the entire collection during the first request (lines 27-33), and then just reads from an in-memory database (multidimensional array) to query the different levels (lines 34-95). TMI: too much iteration.

    Unfortunately there are some kinks, as Phonon often has trouble playing URLs ...read more...

    Jaroslaw Staniek (js): Kexi Quickies

    System & Utilities

    A post on the KDE forum motivated me to write some info about what's new with Kexi 2.0. For sanity I groupped a set of quickies as an 2.0 Alpha 12 changelog. For uninformed, most applications within KOffice will meet the stable 2.0 release (already passed a promising RC1 stage), while Kexi and Kivio neds more time for development. The hope is to synchronize nicely at the 2.1 stage.

    "The main highlights behind Alpha 12 is a completely new Report Designer, and Property Editor, both based on new Qt 4's facilities. Report Designer is a creative fork of OpenRPT libraries, and already makes up a rich reporting tool that well integrates with Kexi principles. Property Editor is a component used by any designer in Kexi, i.e. currently Table, Query, Form, Report and Script Designer. The new quality of the Property Editor will hopefully improve user experience.
    As a true Free and Open Source Software project, Kexi has enjoyed more new developments such as Oracle and ODBC drivers."

    Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): How to make foreach loops that don't suck

    System & Utilities Calling values in Hashes/Maps/Sets

    QHash<QString,Plasma::Meter*> meters;
    foreach (Plasma::Meter *w, meters.values()) {
      w->setLabelColor(0, theme->color(Plasma::Theme::TextColor));
    }

    This code is iterating over the values of a hash and doing something over them. Everything seems ok, but it's not, it's calling values() on the hash and that's causing the creation of a temporary list with all the values of the list, effectively causing a bigger memory usage and iterating over the list twice (one to get the values and other to do something over them).

    You can write something that does the same without these two problems doing

    QHash<QString,Plasma::Meter*> meters;
    foreach (Plasma::Meter *w, meters) {
      w->setLabelColor(0, theme->color(Plasma::Theme::TextColor));
    }

    So if you are using values() in a foreach, just remove it and your code will be instantaneously faster.

    Calling keys in Hashes/Maps

    QHash<QString,Plasma::SignalPlotter*> plotters;
    foreach (const QString& key, plotters.keys()) {
      plotters.value(key)->setShowLabels(detail == SM::Applet::High);
      plotters.value(key)->setShowHorizontalLines(detail == SM::Applet::High);
    }

    This is calling keys() over the hash, this, as values(), means going across the container and creating a temporary list containing all the keys of the ...read more...

    Boudewijn Rempt (boud): Journal d'une femme de cinquante ans

    System & Utilities

    I'm not sure how I arrived at the website of the Times Literary Supplement and found a review of a book based on Henriette Lucie Dillon La Tour Du Pin Gouvernet's memoirs, "Journal D'une Femme de Cinquante Ans". But is fascinating reading, these memoirs of a lady who was a maid-in-waiting to Marie Antoinette and who lives through revolutions, wars, exile and everything.

    And I was so glad when I found the e-text! It was only released on March 15th... I haven't read a lot of French lately, but the nineteeth century French Lucie Dillon writes is really easy to read, probably because the French I was taught at school was already fifty years out of date back in the eighties.

    But now for the sad part: it's only part 1! The fun bits, where she lives in America as an exile, making her own butter, and where she returns to Europe to hob-nob with Napoleon are missing! Please, Mireille Harmelin and Eric Vautier, I want to read on!

    Richard Moore (rich): First Hack with ItemsViewsNG

    System & Utilities

    People reading planet will have seen Thomas Zander's post about the new ItemViews framework the Trolls^H^H^HQt Software guys have been working on. It's very experimental right now, but I thought I'd have a quick look. I decided that a fun hack to write would be to take a standard listview that displays a list of URLs (boring!) and write a custom view that instead displays the rendered web page. I only spent a couple of hours on it, so the code is a hack (eg. you need to resize it to get the pages to display once they've loaded) but the results look ok. The whole code for this example comes in under 120 lines.

    So, that's my hack in response to Thomas's challenge, who's next?

    Dario Freddi (drf__): Adventures in C# and Windowsland, part 2 - threading/event loops

    System & Utilities

    Disclaimer I should have put in the previous post: Some might argue why I’m not using Mono. I want to have an overview of the C#/.NET framework at its best, and from what I’ve seen Mono and respective tools (especially) are not even quite as good as Microsoft’s ones. But I will test the final result on Mono for sure.

    I recognize I’m blogging quite often, and after all the good feedback I had on my previous post, I decided to give a real overview of what I’m doing, and the flaws I encounter on each side during my adventure. Today, I’ll blog about Threading.

    In my opinion, the correct use of threads is one of the factors that sets the bar between the average and the good programmer. Using threads correctly isn’t easy, and some might argue it’s almost an art. So I started researching and finding out how C# handles threading.

    After the usual ~30 minutes, I found out that C# handles threads in an unusual manner. Basically, we have a Thread object that works quite ...read more...

    Now, as I mentioned, it's a charity event, and I need you folks to help me out, by pledging at the Beard-A-Thon page. Don't forget to enter "Benjamin Reed" where it says, " There's a specific beard grower I'd like to support."

    Patrick Spendrin (SaroEngels): 4.2.2

    System & Utilities For those of you who haven't yet been aware of it: Christian made new 4.2.2 packages. I added packages for digikam (0.10.0 release), kipi-plugins (0.2.0 release), konversation4 (yet unreleased snapshot) and thanks to Ralf's porting also k3b (another yet unreleased snapshot). Please do not file bugs against k3b and konversation4 yet, we want to fix the obvious errors first.
    Those packages are all built against Qt 4.4.3, meaning that you can't build current amarok and the koffice release candidate against it. I am planning to make some trunk packages(against Qt 4.5) though to fix this problem.
    In marble I just recently could merge my geodata-nt branch which took a great burden off of me. Now all GeoDataObjects can be copied around, some of them are implicitly shared even. As this comes together with changing the (not-yet stable) API from Pointers to references, some work is still needed (it currently is far to slow to be released...). "please do not hit me for marble being a bit slower now!" ;-)
