RE[3]: But is it any better than 3.5.10?

System & Utilities

It slipped by us, but the KDE team has released another minor bugfix release of KDE 4.2 , version 4.2.3, a few days ago.

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): More frisbees.

System & Utilities
Yeah that's what become sooner or later, well some I still have some very old disk's around for media that i care a lot, and I should really make backup copy's of them before time plays a trick on them. Attention you should place them for recycling in the end. ;)

The DVD one now (64x64, and 22x22 need a bit of work..)..... I made some improvements to the other ones btw. The poll running on the side, seems to be getting interesting , with a tight fight between "finishing the icon set" and "working on the widget theme".

P.S. update. after making this post I realized that the DVD logo could use some pixel tweaking in the 64x64 128x128 and 256x256... and here is the result.

Jos Poortvliet: OpenSuse Community Week

System & Utilities If you've wanted to contribute to FOSS but have no clue how - there's the OpenSuse Community Week for ya. The idea is not only to do something useful right there and then, but also to help others get involved. Throw some community building in the mix and you have the typical combination of fun, learning & being productive which is so typical of a Free Software community.

Of course there will be KDE ppl there, check the KDE schedule. Rob Scheepmaker, Marco Martin and Kevin Krammer will be there - and there is plenty of room for more so sign up if you think you can help others to get involved! I'm contemplating to join the Marketing Schedule - depends on how much time I have and whether joining the KDE schedule seems more appropriate ;-)

Talking about time, I sometimes wonder if I take this workaholic thing too far... I was home from work last night at 20:45 and up and working on KDE promo stuff at ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Stupid heat pumps

System & Utilities

So our boat is in refit right now, and even though the workload seems to be reduced in theory, it’s been more stressful than ever. I can at least be thankful that I’m no longer in Engineering Department, since it still seems like Engineering division officers are forced to spend long hours at work all the time due to some new and exciting broken part.

One thing I’ve noticed though is that pretty much every job I’ve had that’s supposed to be “easy” (especially being the Tactical Systems Officer) is a lot harder in practice, since I actually attempt to perform all the duties/responsibilities instead of just leaving things to rot. It’s fine, as I know I’m accomplishing a lot but then I worry about what the guy who relieves me is going to do. :)

Anyways, as you may have inferred from the subject the heat pump in our house seems to have broken. The refrigerant line on the outdoor coil was completely iced up (which is unfortunate given that this is only supposed to ever happen in wintertime, ...read more...

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): KDELirc is back in kdeutils

System & Utilities

Get out your infrared remote control, wipe the dust from it and grap for some fresh batteries! (Hm, are there solardriven infrared remotecontrols?) With KDE 4.3 you will be able to command the programs on your computer from your armchair again. KDELirc (homepage, code) has returned to KDE, is back in the kdeutils module.

IRKick, the applet of KDELirc, in KDE4

It was almost six years ago, the 27th of May 2003, when Gav Wood moved KDELirc into the KDE repository:

“Initial import of kdelirc, an advanced KDE LIRC system;
Code mostly works on my system and is being uploaded here in order to ease collaboration and testing.”

Following it made its first public release on the 3rd of February 2004, as part of KDE 3.2, sharing a debut with such programs as Kontact, Kopete, KGpg, and KWallet (which may be the reason why it is missing in ...read more...

Andi Clemens (aclemens): New 'auto-correction-mode' for the Free Rotation image plugin

System & Utilities

A few weeks ago I added a new feature to the Free-Rotation imageplugin: 'Automatic (Horizon) Correction'.

digiKam - FreeRotation auto mode

This is nothing new, Gimp and Photoshop (and for sure other applications) have such a feature, too.
You set two points in the preview widget and hit "Adjust" to rotate the image accordingly to these markers.

Prakash Mohan (praksh): Bidirectional Patch!

System & Utilities

I came across an interesting problem today. It was patch that works both forward and backward! It was on the course of editing a UI file, the markups in the svn diff were simply :

</spacer>

</item>

and a

<item>

<spacer>

And the change I made contained the same number of lines apparently.

I did my usual, svn diff > Patch followed by patch -p0 < Patch, hoping It’d ask me to assume a -R . It did ask that for a few files, but not this one and I dint notice that. And my make kept failing. Finally on doing another svn diff, I realised this interesting thing. It had _added_ an extra batch of buggy lines like once wasn’t enough to kill the compile! I ended up doing an svn revert to resolve the issue finally.

So piece of advice : Take that little bit of time to add a -R to the patch -p0 command :)

Chani Armitage (Chani): one last feature

System & Utilities

so monday was feature freeze. I spent part of the day looking at the Icon plasmoid, and decided that the only problem it had that wasn’t a bug was too big to deal with in one day. after dinner I remembered that I had one other thing left on hte feature plan… making it possible to paste stuff as well as drag it to the desktop.

for a while it’s been possible to drag arbitrary content onto the desktop and turn it into a plasmoid, but a few times I found myself trying to paste text instead (dragging’s kinda annoying with a trackpad) and sadly it didn’t work. I’d assumed I wouldn’t have time to get to this feature, but there were still a few hours left in the day, and when I looked into the code I found out there was really very little work to be done. :) two hours later I had a patch that made paste do the same thing as drag&drop. whee :)

this’ll be configurable in 4.4, as part of my ...read more...

( and that is bigger than the brazilian carnival in some states ), but are we going to it?
Are we going to stay here, where it’s warm ( even with the rain ), eat our corn-based food,
our peanut-candy ( beloved, with the name of kid-foot ), our bonfires and such?
of course not!

we will be flying more than 1000 miles just to the biggest OSS Meeting in the South America.
But we will bring a little of the warm with us, to the coldness of the south. ( yah, it will be winter there)

Ivan Cukic (ivan): Planet gets boring on feature freeze

System & Utilities

I’ve had a few busy days closing Lancelot bug reports. There is only one left that is relevant for KDE 4.3, that is only one that is confirmed and not a feature request.

There are quite a few other fixes that somebody could even consider as new features. But realizing that we are in the hard feature freeze period, logically, those are only bug fixes, and not (and I repeat NOT) new features. :)

Kopete integration

The first one is that the Kopete integration works better than before. I’ve just submitted my first patch to Kopete’s code-base fixing a glitch in the D-Bus interface that was stopping Lancelot from accessing the online contacts. (There were some important changes in Kopete that had a side-effect of making its D-Bus interface useless) This has also fixed Lancelot bug 170437: Lancelot-Kopete integration breaks if ocntacts are sync’d with KAddressbook

The parts applet

The parts applet handles the applications:/ KIO much better, so no more wrong icons ...read more...

Celeste Paul (seele): Amarok Usability Update

System & Utilities

This past weekend, the Amarok team met to talk about the road map for 2.1.x and 2.2. They also discussed the findings from the usability test and plan to implement many of the recommendation from the report.

See the 2009 Sprint Roadmap and TODO (particularly the usability section for 2.1.x) for more details of what’s to come for Amarok!

Thanks again to the Columbia Area Linux Users Group and Maryland Ubuntu Local Community for their help with organizing and running the usability test.

Berlin was a lot of fun, must say that I'm deeply impressed by the Amarok people, a wonderful passionate, creative, and interesting group.
I had the chance to share some of my views of, were we can do better visually wise, it went far better than what I had expected, and I have learned a lot in the process. (thats what you get wen working with bright people)

Want to give a huge thanks to KDAB, The KDE e.v., and the Amarok team ror making it possible.
So tomorrow it's back to work and the beguiling of the K3B action icons marathon, hopefully not as complex as kmix was....

Rob Scheepmaker (pinda): Jobs and notifications in the plasma systray.

System & Utilities

I’ve been doing some work since 4.2 to make sure jobs and notifications in the plasma systemtray have better usability then in it’s 4.2 incarnation. Being a new feature it unsurprisingly still had some rough edges. Thanks to a lot of feedback, and discussion on the issues, the current implementation solves a lot of annoyances. Here’s a probably quite complete overview of improvements:

  • There are 2 kinds of people: those that like it that the popup with jobs and notifications automatically hide after a short while when it’s automatically shown, and those that don’t like this behavior. Apparently, most of the plasma developers are in the first group, but looking at some of the comments I got through bugreports, blogposts and what not, the second group also has quite some followers.
Two problem with auto hiding are:
    a) people tended to get confused, thinking the job was finished when it autohides
    b) some people usually wait for a job to finish when they start one, or have enough screen real estate (multiple monitors) that ...read more...

Tomaz Canabrava (tomaz): how rox is Rocs?

System & Utilities

It was about time I give you all an fresh view of the app that I’m writting,

A. L. Spehr (blauzahl): Freeze!

System & Utilities In case you've been under a rock, feature freeze is Monday (the end of or UTC?) and string freeze is the day after. Also, you may have noticed that the new drkonqi is in trunk now. There are a few screens and scenarios that will make usability cry... We are working on them! Code is probably changing as you read this! Although it might be a bad to less bad thing... If you happen to be more of a specialist than me (and I'm not), and have run through these a few times, drop by #kde-bugs and let's talk. Suggestions are welcome for strings too, but you should wait for me to checkin stuff.

If you don't have debug symbols installed, only have part, or if you don't have the Qt ones installed, this is a case you can actually help BugSquad! :D See what you think of the auto-backtrace analysis and how many stars you get for various real-world crashes.

All thanks should go to Dario Andres and George Kiagiadakis, cause they rock for doing this!

Vladimir Kuznetsov: Easy TeX parsing (or: TeXpp and plain.tex)

System & Utilities Some time ago I have blogged about TeXpp. Today it have reached a stage when it loads plain.tex (i.e. the source of the plainTeX format) with only one warning (about unimplemented input command which is not fatal in this case).

But what do I mean by "loads" ? That is: "parses the file and executes each command in it gathering information about all macro definitions, variable assignments, etc.". With this information TeXpp is able to parse any document typed in plain.tex format (yes, I know, you don't have such documents, neither do I - LaTeX support is coming in a near future).

To check correctness of parsing, I have enabled all possible trance information in TeX, parsed the document using TeXpp and Knuth's TeX and compared the log files. Actually I have 55 unit tests that works exactly the same and proves the TeXpp compatibility with TeX in many corner cases. Another 1437 unit tests are based on real-life documents from arxiv.org (but ...read more...

Andrea Diamantini (adjam): rekonq 0.1alpha

System & Utilities

Here we are again, speaking about rekonq 0.1alpha release. If you just know rekonq and are interested in new features and code, take a look at announce in our mailing list or in our site.

On the contrary, if you don’t know, rekonq is a lightweight browser for KDE, based on webkit.  This release starts a new era in rekonq development: as promised, I’m (trying to) copying code to kde svn (playground/network/rekonq). And from now on, there are (at least) three new developers helping me on and some others providing hints, support and translations.

The alpha tag is due to the string freeze (we are providing Italian, Russian, German and … (?) translations) and to our first serious bug fix period.

Development is moving to port rekonq to WebkitKDE (the bindings, NOT the kpart). In case you are interested, contact us on #rekonq channel on freenode or through our new mailing list.

Enjoy.

Dario Freddi (drf__): The future of PowerDevil (and of power management)

System & Utilities

Long time no see, again a post on PowerDevil.

PowerDevil has proven to be quite a solid software, and I’m both proud and happy about it: the 4.2->4.3 transition has happened almost with no maintainance (apart from a critical bugfix from Jacopo, thanks!). The proportion of bugs affecting it regard 20% up/downstream problems, 25% “please implement the feature x” and 15% “oh, the GUI sucks and looks confusing” (yeah, percentages are not accurate, I can tell)

The problem is that PowerDevil GUI does suck, big time, because it’s way too cluttered. However, I can’t add cool and nice features without cluttering it even more. Result, there has to be something wrong. The topic came back today by chance in a short conversation with Martin, and while I was eating, suddenly (and by chance, I was not even thinking about it) I got struck by an idea.

Let’s start knowing that Power Management is something that is very much linked to the hardware, and the average user should have a minor part in configuring/dealing with it.

Today, power management ...read more...

Chani Armitage (Chani): fooooood

System & Utilities

so I was going to blog about food again, wasn’t I?
last weekend I was at LFNW, so I didn’t cook. tomorrow I need to cook, but I still haven’t decided what I want.
but the week before my last food post, I made something yummy that I don’t want to forget about. roast veggies, baked tofu and miso gravy on spinach. :)

it was pretty simple, really. I sliced up and marinated a pack of firm tofu in soy sauce (and a tiny bit of hot sauce). I chopped up some potatoes, a yam, a couple of peppers, most of a bulb of garlic, and possibly a onion into bite-size pieces, coated them with oil, salt and pepper, and… I think I used half a pack of rosemary, too. then I put the tofu and veggies onto baking sheets, stuck them in the oven, and started on the miso gravy.

I used an online recipe for the gravy… iirc it was this one. I only used a cup and a bit of ...read more...

Friedrich Kossebau (frinring): Getting tooltipped how cute Qt is…

System & Utilities

I have seen others praising Qt. Thought they are just a little bit too euphoric. But then I never really had to code against the Win32 API or to use AWT, so perhaps I miss some experience in hell to recognize heaven.

And looking at Qt4 I especially miss to see brilliance if looking at the printing framework or the QDockWidget system, those are not really pleasing me and my needs. And connections of signals and slots not being checked at compile-time has always annoyed me.

But now and then I find solutions that are really making me happy:
Yesterday I wanted to add tooltip support to bookmarks in Okteta, so if hovering over a bookmark mark in the view the name of the bookmark (now editable) would be shown in a tooltip. After I had thought a while about how to achieve this, involving QTimer and mouse events, I was not too satisfied with my ideas and hoped this could be done easier. So I used a well known index service and was pointed to ...read more...

Kevin Krammer: April: an eventful month

System & Utilities

The past month had quite some cool things in store.

It started with the Akonadi developer sprint in Berlin, Germany, where we got quite some work done, especially regarding mails.

This was followed by the general ranking period for this year's Google Summer of Code proposals and we were delighted to see that the Akonadi related ones did exceptionally well.

Three of them are mentored by developers from the KDE PIM team: Akonadi Filtering Framework, Global Outbox for Akonadi and SyncML Agent for Akonadi.
I am proud to be a mentor again, for the fifth consecutive year, my second time for Akonadi/KDE PIM.

Two more Akonadi related proposals which got accepted are Bookmarks with Akonadi and Nepomuk and Conversation Logging Framework.

Later on that month our local Linux and FLOSS event, Grazer Linuxtage 2009 succeeded far beyond our (as in the organising team, which I am a part of ) expectations.

Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Checkinstall DEBs done the CMake way...

System & Utilities CMake can by default build binary packages in DEB, RPM, EXE... Using the all famous CPack (yeah right, you probably never heared of it ;-))

Making use of CPack is in most cases actually quite easy and just involves a bit of copy and paste.
Lets use rekonq as example:
First you'll need to get the source from kde-apps and extract it, then edit the CMakeLists.txt file in the main directory and add the following at the very end:
SET(CPACK_GENERATOR "DEB")
SET(CPACK_PACKAGE_NAME ${CMAKE_PROJECT_NAME})
SET(CPACK_SET_DESTDIR TRUE)
SET(CPACK_DEBIAN_PACKAGE_MAINTAINER "me")
SET(CPACK_PACKAGE_VERSION_MAJOR "0")
SET(CPACK_PACKAGE_VERSION_MINOR "0")
SET(CPACK_PACKAGE_VERSION_PATCH "1~alpha1")
include(CPack)
You can use this portion for about every application, though you might want to change the VERSION parts accordingly ;-)
Once you are done editing, just continue with the normal build process (i.e. mkdir build; cd build; cmake ..; make). When/If make finishes just run cpack or make package. If everything went well this should place rekonq-0.0.1~alpha1-Linux.deb in the build directory, waiting for you to install it.

Disclaimer: This package does, just like a checkinstall created one, not list dependencies, nor does it meet all requirements of a sensible debian package and thus should not be distributed. So, ...read more...
