Agustin Benito Bethencourt: Some reflections about ASOLIF

System & Utilities Facing the end of the second month on my new job, things move slow but forward, as always happens with new projects.

I've been working hard to open communication channels between companies. Interaction is more usual at a technical level than at a manegement level in every free soft. company and we are no exception. We know how to interact in a lower level. We've learned it by collaborating in free software communities, but at higher levels....that's another story.

The good point is that most of the managers and owners of ASOLIF companies come from the technical world. In fact, most of them begun as free software developers. They want to interact as managers as they did as technicians.

So how can we achieve this goal when not all of the information a company handles can be public, can be shared? How does cooperation is possible when you compete everyday?

Big companies can organice themselves in departments with different procedures, so they can interact with different profiles at different levels. Small companies cannot. For ...read more...

George Kiagiadakis (gkiagia): Hello planet!

System & Utilities

Hello planet KDE!

This is my first post on planet kde, so I’ll first introduce myself. My name is George Kiagiadakis (gkiagia on irc) and I am a 20-year-old student from Greece. I was born and live in Iraklio, on the island of Crete and I study computer science at the Computer Science Department of the University of Crete. Some of you may already know me as I have been involved in KDE for a few months now. I first started my involvement from the KDE Bugsquad, doing bug triaging, and then I started fixing some bugs as well. I got an svn account in October and I first fixed some issues with kwrited (a daemon that sits in the background and listens for messages sent with write(1) or wall(1) on the same computer). During the period of the KDE 4.2 pre-releases, I also joined the Debian Qt/KDE Maintainers to help them with packaging, which I still do. Later, I started helping Dar

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): Mixing them all up!

System & Utilities
Some one asked me to show all of the kmix icons together, and if some one asks I obey :), any way I think it only makes sense, so here its goes the almost complete icon theme from KMix in oxygen style. Currently I think its only missing, default PCM, pc speaker, and surround center.

So in order we have, master, front, surround, LFE, PCM, front mic, front mic boost, line, cd, mic, mic boost, headphone, digital line, record master, and finaly record secundary.

Ariya Hidayat: quattro cinque uno

System & Utilities

Fresh from the oven: Qt 4.5.1, Qt Creator 1.1, new SDK.

Details on what has changed can be examined in the changes file. Now that the release is out, the QtWebKit team is busy again fixing bugs and backporting important fixes for the next patch release (4.5.2). Expect to see more extensive changes there. Few QtWebkit-related examples which I have written are also being cleaned-up and imported as new Qt examples, as we speak.

Aurelien Gateau: Simple way to install up-to-date libraries

System & Utilities

Following a quite heated discussion on #kde-devel about minimum versions of libraries required to build KDE trunk, I decided to describe how I install up-to-date libraries without messing with my distribution packages.

Installing a library by hand can usually be done in three places:

  1. Install in /usr: this is a sure way to annoy the packaging system of your distribution…
  2. Install in /usr/local: this is the traditional way to install libraries by hand, but it is a bit difficult to uninstall things because files are scattered in the traditional lib, share, bin… folders.
  3. Install in /opt/library_name: this makes libraries easy to install and uninstall, but it needs a bit more work to make the library available to the rest of the system.

I personally like to use option #3. Installing a library this way requires specifying the prefix at configuration time. For libraries using autotools, this is done with ./configure --prefix=/opt/library_name. For libraries using CMake, use cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/opt/library_name.

As I said, when you are done, you need to make the library available to the system. To ...read more...

Andreas Aardal Hanssen (bibr): Layered rendering part 2, it helps solve many problems… :-)

System & Utilities

As part of Qt 4.5, we added QGraphicsItem::opacity. Which is great! But it doesn’t work as well as it could. We’re receiving a few comments about how this implementation could work better. Trouble is, in Qt 4.5 we only have two ways of rendering: direct, and indirect (”cached”, e.g., ItemCoordinateCache). And in order to apply opacity, you really need full composition support… :-/

Here’s a rundown of the trouble with today’s opacity support:

  • The current behavior modifies the input opacity of the painter
    • …so you can override this opacity on a per-item basis (intentionally or not!)
    • …and each primitive (line, rect, pixmap) you draw with QPainter will be composed one at a time inside the item (which is bad!)
  • The behavior is slightly different depending on whether you cache an item or not.
    • …if you use caching, the offscreen pixmap is rendered with an opacity, whereas the item itself doesn’t have any opacity set on its painter.
  • Each item applies opacity locally, and even though opacity propagates to ...read more...

Eduardo Robles Elvira (Edulix): GSoC: Konqueror Bookmarks with Akonadi and Nepomuk

System & Utilities

I’ve been accepted as a Google Summer of Code student too for KDE! Third time lucky. Of the two propossals I sent, the one about getting a brand new bookmarks system for konqueror is the one which got accepted.  That’s great, because current Konqueror bookmarks was showing its age. Most of the main browsers today have a more advanced bookmarking system. Currently it’s easier for a user to search his bookmarks with krunner than doing so with Konqueror itself. This will be no more. The bookmarks will now be stored with Nepomuk and Akonadi and will be easily found using an awesome location bar similar to firefox’ one, using krunner, the bookmarks editor or the bookmarks menu itself.

As Chani (who has also been accepted as a GSoC student this year) has suggested, I’ll do a GSoC weekly report of my project, so be tunned konqueror users! Now that we are in the community bonding period, I’ve started the project by fixing some konqueror bugs that I should have fixed long time ago, and will continue by testing ...read more...

Jason McDonald (Qt Software): Qt 4.5.1 has been released

System & Utilities

After much hard work from Qt Software developers in Oslo, Berlin and Brisbane, Qt 4.5.1 is now available.

Qt 4.5.1 is a patch level release providing a large number of bug fixes and minor improvements over the 4.5.0 release that went out in early March. You can get Qt 4.5.1 here and you can see what’s changed in the changes log.

Many thanks are due to those users who provided feedback on the 4.5.0 release. Your feedback has been very valuable in helping us to improve Qt, and we hope that you will continue to send us your constructive criticism, wishlists, likes and dislikes for the 4.5.1 release and beyond.

Sandro Andrade (sandroandrade): GSoC - Phase 1 - A Plasma Focusgroup

System & Utilities

Like I promissed you, the step-by-step of the GSoC project will be all described in this blog.

So, for now…

As I said in my proposal, the first task of this project, besides studying libs and stuff, would be the appliance of the focus group technique, right?! Ok.

But, first, what is this focus group about? Well, it’s something like a meeting with 8 - 12 people with opinions (very important - they gotta have opinions) about certain matter. There is also moderator that is going to lead this 1-2 hour discussion, and he will make sure that all the points and questions to the matter were covered. Here is wikipedia to help you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Focus_group

In this project, the moderator would be me and the matter would be the Widgets Explorer, of course.

But how to get it done? Well, the traditional technique says it must be a traditional meeting, with people in the same room. But since this matter involves a international community - and so it would be hard to get together at the same room -  how ...read more...

Milian Wolff (milianw): KDevelop Hack Sprint 2009 - Day 2 and 3

System & Utilities

Ok, just a quick update on what we are doing / have done the last two days except drinking beer and eating quite a lot of food (though it never seems to be enough somehow….)

  • Apol was polishing CMake support, speeding up KDevelop startup time when you enabled the QtHelp plugin, making sure that Kross plugins get loaded properly and some other things
  • Adymo started some refactoring of Sublime in an experimental branch (actually they had quite a long discussion right now about things in the UI which should be changed/fixed). Besides that he also fixed some little bugs in the includepath resolver for CMake
  • Nsams is fixing PHP support and adding new features here and there. Esp. completion inside a foreach over a Iterator class works now!
  • and as always ZWabel did fix quite a lot of bugs, most of them which only were discoverable in a few corner cases, very nice indeed.
  • shaforo who sadly already left us again to attend university fixed the sorting in the Project view among other things
  • With Apols help I managed ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: Still about color wheel

System & Utilities

This is the follow-up to what I wrote before: hue subdivision for mortals.

Seems everyone echoes my sentiment: increasing the coverage area of green is not the right way to go. The easiest explanation is as follows. Since this is an additive color model, due to the higher sensitivity of green, its contribution to other primary colors should be reduced. Effectively, this means we should shrink the green region in the color wheel:

For the "Mortal" version in the above picture, I modified the conversion from hue to RGB (assuming fully saturated color), because I discarded the idea of curve-fitting to map the angle to the hue value. Another change is that I gave up keeping the triangle of the primaries, i.e. while 0 is still red (as an arbitrary reference), 0.333 is not green anymore. The actual position of a color component is now determined by the inverse proportion of its part to the grayscale function. I arrive at 26% red, 17% green, and 57% blue. Unsuprisingly, it means blue ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): kaizen and kakushin

System & Utilities I read Mark Shuttleworth's blog entry about meta-cycles this evening and was taken back in my mind to an entry I wrote in September of 2007 about Toyota.

My issue with the "6 month cycle" has always been three-fold:

  1. the number 6 is a project specific detail and should not be pushed on every project because it won't fit every project (Mark notes he works on projects with 1, 3 and 6 month cycles; other cycle are also possible, of course); what we're really talking about it timed releases made with a relatively high level of consistency

  2. The discussion is often coupled with the idea of coordinating different projects to the same cycle, which is really a different sort of conversation altogether with "length of the resulting release cycle" being an implementation detail within it

  3. it's only one half of the equation, with the missing half being the non-high-level-of-consistency-time-interval releases; too often it was an either/or discussion where if you were doing one you couldn't have been doing the other

  4. ...read more...

Michael Pyne (mpyne): How many log directories do you have?

System & Utilities

The question in the title pertains if you use kdesvn-build. kdesvn-build creates a separate log directory for every single run it makes. If you’ve done a lot of kdesvn-build runs and you’ve never manually cleaned out your log directory you’ve probably got quite a few hundreds of log bundles.

Someone finally noticed and filed a bug. Attached to that bug is a patch I’ve created to remove all log directories but the ones referenced in the latest kdesvn-build run for a given module. I consider this the correct behavior so at this point I’m not looking to make it optional or require a magic incantation to Do the Right Thing.

So, if you use kdesvn-build I’d recommend trying out the patch (always use –pretend first!). If you want to skip straight to pruning directories you can use a command like kdesvn-build --no-svn --no-build --no-install kdelibs (replace kdelibs with a module in your rc file). Also, does anyone have a reason to retain more log directories than those in log/latest? (And has a reason that you can’t ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: On hue subdividision for mortals

System & Utilities

The use of HSV/HSL color space is obvious when we need to have several colors distributed in an optimal way, colors as unique as possible. For example, SpeedCrunch uses it to autogenerate the colors used for the syntax highlighting feature. The details behind its algorithm was already described by Helder in his Qt Quarterly article Adaptive Coloring for Syntax Highlighting. Basically we use the color wheel and subdivide the hue into equal parts. Primary additive color components are red, green, and blue. This distributes the colors in maximum angular distance with respect to the hue values.

So far so good. However, it was known that human eyes are generally more sensitive to green than other colors. In computer graphics, this is often manifested in the grayscale function, i.e. the function that converts RGB to a grayscale value. Take a peek at Qt's qGray(), it gives the red, green, and blue the weighting factors of 11, 16, and 5, respectively. Shall we take this into account ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): Amarok projects for GSoC 2009

System & Utilities

Just like all the other cool KDE projects Amarok did of course also get their share of excellent students for GSoC this year.

  • Teo Mrnjavac will make the playlist rock after having worked on tagging during last year’s Season of KDE.
  • Sven Krohlas will give us some unit testing goodness to find all those nasty bugs before a user gets to see them.
  • Alejandro Wainzinger will make sure our media device support will make people happy.

I am sure you’ll do awesome work! I hope I can soon add the names of those who are going to take part in Season of KDE (and another super cool thingy we arranged which I can’t yet talk about) to this list.

Thanks to Google for running GSoC and making this possible.

Rob Scheepmaker (pinda): GSoC 2009: network transparency in Plasma

System & Utilities

As you’ll probably have noticed, the accepted proposals for the Google Summer of Code of 2009 have been announced. KDE has a nice selection of projects this summer, and I’m very happy my proposal is one of them.

So what does this ‘network transparency in plasma’ mean? Allow me to copy/paste some stuff from my proposal:

The goal of this project is to make some parts of plasma network transparent with as end goal the ability to:

  • have applets be able to use services and data engines on remote computers
  • move applets and activities over the network
  • share applets and activities between multiple computers

This allows for some innovative new use cases in plasma:

Alice is a teacher on a school where they use computers as a learning aid. She has set up all computers in the classroom to display a single shared activity in plasma. Now Alice can modify this activity on her computer depending on what she teaches that day, and all the children immediately see changes she made on their ...read more...

Sam Duff (Socceroos): Can I finally free my company?

System & Utilities Well, I don't think I've mentioned this before, but I stumbled across possibly the best reason yet to move our entire company over to a fully FOSS solution (remember I'm only the Systems Admin/Programmer here).

The program that has given me so much hope is SeamlessRDP. This little tool allows me to run all our companies Windows-only applications on any Linux machine by streaming the application over the network. This means that the application acts just like another program on the users desktop - but in reality it is being run from a Windows server over the network.

For me, this is huge news.

Recently in a Directors meeting we discussed the pending need to start updating our systems because in 2014 Microsoft will end update support for Windows XP. The Directors didn't like this because we have around 50 computers and laptops and the upgrade costs for our company would be a huge hit on our resources.

Given this situation, I gave them a short presentation on the state of Open Source ...read more...

Frank Karlitschek (karli): Knowledge base feature

System & Utilities Hi everyone,
we've noticed that there are just few people who are using our knowledge base/help feature. Many don't even know that we have implemented this feature. A short reminder: every application on openDesktop.org network e.g. kde-apps.org or KDE-look.org can have its own small user generated FAQ. If you have a question or a problem with an application you can post your question together with a description and up to three screenshots. Other can help you with the problem via comments or share tips. And if you found the solutions you can add the answer to your question and mark the problem as solved.
