Anne-Marie Mahfouf (annma): Collaborative debugging

System & Utilities I installed a clean trunk with a clean build on a clean $KDEHOME. That allows me to test things as they are as defaults. I discovered a bug in the French translation but the translation itself was not faulty and I could not find where to start looking to debug it. So in that case, I have a strategy (I don't give up): I keep pestering people in various IRC channels until someone can confirm the bug. I got a French Mandriva developer confirming the bug, that was a great first step (no, I'm not mad! unless both of us are). I kept asking around and a Dutch translator remembered something and in the process he gave me more knowledge about the bug. Then coles (IRC nick) stepped in and hop! in minutes he debugged it and tested a patch, refined it, went to ask some core devels and got the fix in! I would not have been able to fix it and that's what a team is about. Pieces of knowledge added together and then the final touch, in ...read more...

Davide Bettio (WindowsUninstall): KFormat and DeviceKit-disks

System & Utilities

KFormat

KFormat

I waited for a long time to play with DeviceKit-disks (DeviceKit-disks is a rather interesting daemon that allows developers to not clutter their code with format related stuff) and now this week I had time to start working on KFormat. The idea behind KFormat is to replace KFloppy then the next step will be to implement KDiskManager and a KDE disk management library.
By now first KFormat revision is under development in the KDE svn and I will blog when I’ll have more interesting updates.

Witold Wysota: QwwSmtpClient released

System & Utilities

I decided to release QwwSmtpClient I blogged about two months ago.

The sources are available for download: qwwsmtpclient.

Next to do is the “QNetworkAccessManager-like” API for easier handling…

If you have any comments about the library, feel free to leave them under this post. Any feedback is appreciated, especially that I didn’t have a chance to test the library in practice.

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): JavaScript ScriptEngine and plasmapkg in kdebase-runtime

System & Utilities I've moved the JavaScript Plasma ScriptEngine and the plasmapkg tool (which takes care of install, upgrading, uninstalling and listing things wrapped in Plasma::Packages) into kdebase-runtime. plasmapkg was being used by the PlasmoidPoackage in libplasma, so that one was almost a no-brainer, but the main reason for the move was so that Plasma using apps can take advantage of using Plasma::Packages for their post-install data add-ons and JavaScript for Plasmoids and Runners (in 4.4 I'll be adding DataEngines).

It was the Amarok team that asked for better access to these tools, which up until this point had been hiding away in kdebase-workspace which really isn't an acceptable dependency to carry for a non-workspace application.

I'm really excited about the growing usage of scripting, and JavaScript in particular, to extend applications at runtime. JavaScript has the combined benefits of being fast, lightweight, dependency-free for Qt and KDE using apps (it's already in the dependency chain), easy to add to your app and easily secured.

If your app needs to be extensible and you're thinking of providing a C++ ...read more...

Guillaume DE BURE (gdebure): Skrooge in playground

System & Utilities This should be my first post syndicated on planetkde, so Hello Planet !

I intend to post here progress regarding skrooge, a personal finances manager for KDE4. Some of you may already know skrooge from kde-apps or sourceforge. We have decided to get integrated more tightly in KDE, and thus we are currently migrating into playground/office, aiming at being part of extragear.

The mandatory screenshots :

If you want to try it, skrooge is already packaged for several distros : Mandriva, Opensuse, Ubuntu, Momonga, Arch (through AUR)...

The website currently hosted on sourceforge gives some more indication. Obviously, it will be migrated extragear once skrooge made it ...read more...

Tomaz Canabrava (tomaz): GSoC 2009 – Mancala Game.

System & Utilities

Since my studant is having some trouble with his uptime internet connection, I will repost here his post about GSoC, that was not sindicated at the time.

==============================
GSOC 2009 : Mancala
April 27, 2009 by mahfuz062

I have been accepted to work for kde under GSOC-2009 . I am going to make a game for kde this summer.

My gsoc application can be found here.

About Mancala:

Mancala is not a game, It is really a type of board game played around the world, especially in Asia and Africa. It is recoginized by different names in different places. The board, game rules also vary from region to region. The most common games are kalah(USA,Germany), Awari(Africa).

A quick overview of mancala can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mancala

For detailed knowledge about how Mancala differs from region to region this can be helpful:

http://www.gamesmuseum.uwaterloo.ca/VirtualExhibits/countcap/pages/index.html

Why Mancala:

Mancala is among the oldest board games currently in existence. So, it has massive historical importance.

The variety of Mancala in different regions can be a good way to represent cultural ...read more...

Prakash Mohan (praksh): Time for a weekly report — KStars

System & Utilities

Ah, without my realisation a week has passed since I started my GSoC work on KStars. My proposal was to create an Observation Planner for KStars a neat little(well not exactly little) utility where you’ll have everything you need for chalking out your observation plans. So, what I’ve achieved till now in the process is :

1. Make a lot of other features like What’s Up Tonight and the FindDialog to be accessible from the Observing List so that the user doesn’t have to take to a tedious process of going to these from the menus, slewing to the object and then do a Add to Observing List.

2. Get the Altitude Vs Time Plot integrated within the Observing List. This makes it much easier to view the AVT Plot by just clicking on the object rather than take to the process of Opening the AltVsTime plot window for the plot. ( This left some space to the right as you can see in the image attached below, which will be filled up by another plot/The Coordinates of ...read more...

Thomas Thym (ungethym): Destroying Communities

System & Utilities I'm not only promoting KDE and asking stupid questions I also research about community building. The opposite of the questing you want to answer sometimes gives you a totally new perspective of your subject. Therefor my question is not how to build communities but how to destroy them.
  • How can I destroy a community (as a leader or developer or user or troll)? Under which circumstances would you stop contributing to KDE or any other Open Source Project (I've read some tweets about developer leaving a certain distro)?
I would be very happy if you could leaves some comments.

Nick Shaforostoff (shaforostoff): Qt's DOM whitespace specifics

System & Utilities So I've just finished writing xliffmerge scipt that is direct analog of msgmerge@gettext and pomerge@translate-toolkit, but specially for XLIFF, i.e. it leverages all the advantages XLIFF brings, like saving information about each template update, specifying tha phase in which each unit was modified last time, and so on.

I was surprised to find out that translate-toolkit parses XML files into its own internal representation, which means they loose everything they don't support.

So to do it in a nice way, I chose to work directly with DOM representation of XLIFF file (using QDomDocument and friends). In Lokalize XliffStorage class is just a wrapper around QDomDocument.

I enabled preserving the whitespace, but in some cases it added additional whitespace, which means it modified user-editable text. The cases were clear: when no character data is between tags, it 'formats' them: inserts newline character + indent spaces. To override this behaviour I just added insertion of empty text nodes between tags. You can see the code in the end of xliffmerge.py (fixWhiteSpace*())

Thomas Thym (ungethym): Kudos to wine developers

System & Utilities Yesterday my father was visiting and wanted to show me a CD about Australia. I first thought there were some images or videos on it but it was a MS-Windows .exe file. :-(
I knew I installed wine some month ago. So I just clicked on the file and entered "wine" when KDE was asking for the application with which I wanted to open this file. Really deeply impressed we could navigate through the whole program including animations, music, text, etc.
Kudos to the wine developers. Great work!
Finally I added wine as standard application for .exe files to the file association dialog in KDE4 systemsettings and now I can run .exe files with a simple mouseclick. I'm delighted to see how flexible Linux has become these days.

Jonathan Thomas (JontheEchidna): Another person with a new GPG key

System & Utilities -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256

- -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

So, I suppose I'll be switching to a new GPG key as well. I've never been to
any keysigning events or anything, but I thought I'd just throw it out there,
for the lulz. :P

The old one will be valid until I revoke it, but since I've not done any
signing I could probably just do that whenever. (Sooner to be safer I
suppose?)

This message has been signed by both keys to verify that this really is me
changing my GPG key.

My old key:

uid Jonathan Thomas (The man)
uid Jonathan Thomas
sub 2048g/E9F1819F 2008-04-08

Funnily enough, this new key gives me a chance to start fresh, free from the

Martin Meredith: This whole GPG/PGP thing

System & Utilities

So, SHA-1 has potential exploits, but you know what? I only use it for signing plain text things. Email, change files… I’ve no reason to use it for encryption, as I don’t encrypt things

Surely, if anyone is going to make something that collides with a valid signature of mine, it’s going to either a) be noticable to the person reading it (random characters in an email?) or b) not be processable by whatever automated sytem is using it.

I’ve yet to hear of any exploit that could affect the way I use SHA-1 in a meaningful way. Ok, yes, I’m not going to be using it to hash passwords in future (well, GPG uses it to hash passwords, but generally, to be able to crack that, someone would have to have my secret key anyway, which I would count as being compromised!)

If someone can give me a real world example of how this can be used against me, I might go out of my way to replace my key, but for now, I don’t see the need. Ok, ...read more...

Bart Cerneels (Stecchino): UPnP DevSprint in Paris

System & Utilities
Hi from Paris, where together with [ade], dev, erwan, philn and lightyear I'm at the Coherence/KDE developer sprint focused on UPnP.
Yesterday, after struggling with QtDBUS (specifically the under-documented qdbusxml2cpp) I managed to the signals from Coherence and call functions. So now I can discover the devices on the network.

The signals are connected to a UPnPCollectionFactory that should create a new collection for each mediaserver (containing music) on the network.

Next step will be to really talk to the devices themselves. That will require some XML parsing, which can get a bit complicated. With any luck I'll find a Qt based DIDL-lite parsing library. Consider that a lazyweb questions :).

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): random ramblings, nothing to see here

System & Utilities Yesterday I had a bit of a fever, probably something I picked up from P. who was ill earlier in the week from something he picked up at school. My laptop had also started to overheat randomly. So after some light hacking in the morning (reworked the time engine to be a lot cleaner internally now that it does sun and moon positioning, by creating a TimeSource class instead of using DataEngine::setData directly; this means the source name is parsed out exactly once and prevents dozens of allocations on every source update (which is twice a second for clocks showing seconds); this also resulted in some internal improvements to Plasma::DataEngine itself so that engines using custom DataContainers don't incur any odd performance penalties; then triaged a few dozen bug reports) I turned the laptop off, took it apart and cleaned out the fan assembly of dust and fluff.

Good news is that today the laptop temperature is back to how it was when I first bought it (love that temperature plasmoid, btw :) and my fever is gone too. ...read more...

Nick Shaforostoff (shaforostoff): Scripting Lokalize

System & Utilities I started working on scripting support in Lokalize several months ago, but never really announced this because I wanted to write my own scripts and refine/extend API accordingly along the way.

KDE 4.3 will bring us 'officially' scriptable Lokalize. Among recent additions are new project wizard with anonsvn checkout support (screencast; it also checks out templates/ and scripts/ folders), actions to update .po from template and to compile .po into .mo and place it in local .kde folder so it could be picked up automatically by applications on the next start (see here and here for python sources).

Recently I also extended pology with ability to communicate to Lokalize, so now you can run xml checks against your translations and get erroneous files opened in Lokalize and positioned on appropriate entry.

So how it works: on each project open Lokalize scans PROJECTDIR/lokalize-scripts folder for .rc files and adds them to a 'cache' file called PROJECTDIR/lokalize-scripts/scripts.rc (so you shouldn't generally want to add it to version control system). ...read more...

Matthias Kretz (Vir): KUbuntu 9.04 hangs

System & Utilities Author

Dear Lazyweb,

what is the best way to debug a problem with the session DBus apparently getting stuck? The KDE4 session on this computer becomes completely unresponsive. An ssh login still works but a simpleexport DISPLAY=:0
qdbus
doesn't return. No output at all.qdbus --systemstill works. Runningstrace qdbusshows it waiting on a read on some pipe it created right after reading /var/lib/dbus/machine-id.

ps aux showed two session busses running. One from the user and another one from root. The root session bus was probably created by running Adept a few minutes before.

strace on the dbus process of the user showed it polling and calling gettimeofday, apparently at timeouts. Attaching gdb to the session bus didn't give me any information

Anyway, I don't know enough about dbus and I would like to get rid of this annoying hang. Whatever you try to do with the computer, in the end you have to fall back to SysRq + {S, U, B} since nothing else can get the system back. Any ideas how to get ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): Progress on gcc plugins

System & Utilities

In a previous blog entry, I discussed some initial work on GCC plugins. Since then, the GCC gurus (in particular, Rafael Avila de Espindola) have made sure headers get installed correctly.

I was a bit confused about how you can find the header location (since it isn't part of the normal header paths), but David Korn pointed out the -print-file-name= command line option for gcc. If you ask for -print-file-name=plugin/include/, then this could be a good path. Turns out if you get back plugin/include/, then gcc can't find the file name / path.

So I stretched my cmake skillz, and came up with this:

# - Find GCCPlugins
# Find the include path for GCC plugin headers
#
# This module defines
#  GCCPLUGINS_FOUND - whether the GCC Plugin support was found
#  GCCPLUGINS_INCLUDE_DIR - the include path for GCC plugin headers

if (GCCPLUGINS_INCLUDE_DIR)

  # Already in cache
  set (GCCPLUGINS_FOUND TRUE)

else (GCCPLUGINS_INCLUDE_DIR)

  # Ask the compiler where to find the paths
  IF(NOT CMAKE_COMPILER_IS_GNUCC)
    SET(GCCPLUGINS_FOUND FALSE)

Nick Shaforostoff (shaforostoff): Lokalize screencast time

System & Utilities I did quite a few things during the last week.

In particular I finished implementation of storing XLIFF inline markup in translation memory and made autosubstitution mechanism more robust. Also I added support for binary units and displaying alternate translations (stored in xliff or from external file -- esp. useful for gettext po files which don't support storing alternate translations in the same file).

Andreas Pakulat: new dependency for kdevelop/gdb

System & Utilities

Apparently some people tap into this pitfall, so I’ll kinda “announce” this here. KDevelop4 from trunk requires kdebase/workspace since this week. The reason is a much improved process-selection-widget for our gdb-plugin. This allows far better attach-to-process experience than the old widget. The new widget comes from a library thats so far used by ksysguard and is installed as part of the KDE workspace. For KDE 4.4 the library will move to kdelibs and then this requirement will be lifted again, but until then the best option we have is depending on kdebase/workspace.

Also I’d like to note that right now OpenSuSE and Gentoo packages for kdebase/workspace have a bug, which prevents automatic finding of the relevant cmake modules when building KDevelop. Amilcar posted a workaround to the kdevelop mailinglists, but I’m pretty sure the distro’s will catch up soon with fixed packages.
