Martin Meredith: Automated PPA GPG Keys

System & Utilities

After reading Alan Pope’s recent post on installing GPG keys for PPAs easily, I thought I’d have a bit of a hack around.

Personally, I regularly add PPAs to my system, whether it be for Chromium Daily Builds, Bazaar, Gwibber, or anything else. I’ve found the most annoying thing is the installation of the GPG keys.

Now, I wouldn’t reccomend this for everyone, but, for some, it might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

Here’s what I did:-

Firstly, I saved the Script that Alan linked to as /usr/local/bin/ppakeys and chmod’d it to 755. I then created a new file, “/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/05ppa” containing the following line

APT::Update::Pre-Invoke { "if [ -x /usr/local/bin/ppakeys ]; then /usr/local/bin/ppakeys; fi”; };

Now, every time I do a “sudo apt-get update” - it’ll check for new keys that I need, and install them as neccessary.

Magic!

it-s: The Egyptians are coming!

System & Utilities
Dear Planet,

As you all know KDEGames is by far the most innovative, and well designed part of Linux, and of KDE in particular ;)
But in this release cycle we have literally jumped over our heads trying to please you.

Now, everybody knows just how cool the mummies are, don't you? And the theme of ancient Egypt seems to be everyone's favorite no matter how much time passes. So to stay up to date, or maybe even hopelessly out of it, we present you the new set of the default themes in KDEGames - Egypt!

Yes, you've guessed it! In 4.3 almost everything will look like it came straight from the grand museum in Cairo :D
And here is a small preview of what to expect:

KSudoku - sudoku puzzle game with lots and lots of layouts to master your problem solving skills. A must for CEOs and Executives.

KPat - Good old patience game. No self-respecting housewife should be seen without one.

KBlocks - The most played game of all time - tetris!

Tom Albers: State of Mailody

System & Utilities

People ask me what the state of Mailody is. There are no new releases, no blogs, no microblogs, the website is dated and there are hardly any commits. Is it dead?

Nope, not at all. The reason the development has stalled the last year or so is simple. Mailody relies completely on Akonadi. That means that the backend of Mailody is no longer a sqlite database, but based on Akonadi. Akonadi is also responsible for fetching the mail messages from an IMAP, POP3, Exchange or whatever seerver.

And that is where the problem lies. The first implementation of the Akonadi IMAP-resource was based on a library I wrote and used for Mailody3. The great hackers from KDAB looked at it, probably laughed very loud and told me kindly that it was not good enough. But that was not a surprise to me, I wrote it as one of the first things after learning C++, and I told people in the early stages before the move to Akonadi that someone with a lot of experience should carefully review all code.

Will Stephenson: KDE NetworkManagement Sprint Day Two

System & Utilities

I felt like the grumpy grandpa of the NM sprint when the others hammered on my door at 9.30am after I'd rolled over for just another 10 minutes two hours earlier. The grey cells do still work once you hit your thirties but they need more care and feeding if I want to be able to speak intelligibly the next morning - not going to rock bars until 3am!

We've continued planning this morning. The big goals for this meeting was to 'get Network Management finished' and 'make it usable on non-NetworkManager systems' but our discussions last night showed us that the current complexity of the applet prevents both goals - it takes me several days of getting up to speed with the code before I dare to try to code it and it's deterring Frederik from making significant changes. So we identified all the pieces and started juggling them last night over pizza until they landed in a way that makes sense.

The big picture is that most of the complexity will move from the Plasma applet into the ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Vote low tech

System & Utilities

The Netherlands was one of the countries to vote early in the EU parliamentary elections this year — and it may end up in hot water due to releasing results early — so I did my bit. Now that things are over here, the paper is full of opinion articles on how the voting and campaigns were totally useless. Seems like a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy there. In any case the biggest surprise in voting for me was casting a vote on paper. There were legal challenges to the voting machines — closed-source, not effectively auditable — over the winter and therefore things have switched back to paper. Seems now I need to think about the security of a big plastic bin again from a democratic perspective.

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Attention kdesvn-build users

System & Utilities

If you’ve been using kdesvn-build to build qt-copy, I recommend updating to the Subversion /trunk version, or using the 1.9.1 release. This is to adapt to a recent change to the qt-copy configure script, which causes an infinite loop (with subsequent disk fillup thanks to output logging). 1.9.1 will not work with older versions of qt-copy however.

For those who are interested, the change is to add a method for accepting a license without user prompting, which means that the previous method kdesvn-build employed (essentially running sed on the configure script) is now unnecessary (and harmful :-/).

In other KDE news, I ran across an issue with KWin closing on me after I closed out of all applications, starting from the other day. I’ve committed a fix to trunk, but I’m still not sure why it’s started exactly. But if you’re running into issues with KWin closing on you when you close all windows make sure to update kdebase.

Tomaz Canabrava (tomaz): Talk on Fisl – KDE4 for the non – initiate.

System & Utilities

It looks like I got accepted on FISL, that’s really encouraging for me since I just started helping KDE team on Brazil ( My first KDE-Related talk was last year on LatinoWare ). I Will be giving a
talk entitled “KDE4 for the non-initiates” where I will present them the really-used-omg-awesome apps that the powerusers do use, but the normal user doesn’t know about it and could save thy life.

the apps that I will talk about, besides a quick introduction of KDE4 itself:

– Yakuake – because a quake style terminal that sexy-slide from the top of your screen is… you know, sexy and cool. ( and one of the “must have” apps, for sure. 4grid terminals always open when programming )
– Kate with VIM – Because everybody that’s Tr00z loves vim ( I’m not a Tr00, I just point’n click ) but VIM has a few problems with, you know, it’s ugly, no cute fonts, no anti-aliasing. Kate – VIM FTW.
– KSnapshot – Because a print-screen button for users should ...read more...

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): Plasma and RTL

System & Utilities A huge number of people read and write languages that run right-to-left (aka RTL) so it's good to have solid support for RTL. I fixed a few RTL bugs in Plasma's panels the other day and I noticed Marco killed another one a few days before that, but while running `plasma-desktop -reverse` I spotted a couple cosmetic issues.

I run plasma-desktop and some of the other tools maybe a couple times a year in RTL mode, and usually because someone has filed a bug report about it. That means new RTL bugs creep in far too easily.

What would be just excellent is if we had a developer who runs their desktop in RTL who could keep an eye on it and work on RTL patches. That way our RTL experience would be a lot better. The workload is probably fairly minimal as most things Just Work(tm) thanks to Qt; it's mostly where we do custom painting and placement that things sometimes go haywire.

If you have Qt development experience and would like to make Plasma rock ...read more...

As I mentioned in my previous post, one of the key contributors to KDE on Windows for many years is unhappy with the way we, KDAB (and our partners at Intevation and g10code) have handled our collaboration with them. In particular, Christian writes:

I'm also disappointed by the role of the firms involved in KDE/windows development. Two years ago they asked us what they can do for us. We told them that we need:

Aaron Seigo (aseigo): aseigo.brain().idle();

System & Utilities Yesterday was "one of those days" for me where my brain just refused to kick into gear. This happens every so often. Think of it as a sort of Paris-in-my-mind where the workers just up and strike every so often refusing to let the creative juices get moving. Inconvenient, but then I push myself pretty hard at times so I'm just happy it doesn't happen more often. ;)

So I took care of boring and mundane things, the sort of things I can do without my creativity cap on. Today, however, the Parisian mob was back at work and my fingers are moving again. On the day after such events, I always feel compelled to try and work a bit harder to make up for time lost. I'm perhaps overly aware of my own mortality and that I have been given only so many days in this life to do the things I wish to do.

This didn't stop others from kicking ass and taking names in the wild worlds of Qt, KDE and Plasma, though.

Dario Freddi (drf__): Oslo, day one

System & Utilities

So I finally arrived in Oslo for the NM applet meeting. Today I’m alone, since the meeting starts tomorrow, but I came here one day before to cut the travel costs (yes, hard to believe, but it’s true) and I decided to write a small something everyday, since it’s a whole new experience for me.

I left from Bergamo at 10.45. 2 hours and a half later and 20°C less after, I finally arrived in Torp, greeted by the awesome view of the Danish and Norwegian coasts, one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. It still took an hour and a half to get to Oslo, and some more time to reach Anker, where I’m staying just for this night (I’ll join the rest of the KDE people in Munch tomorrow). The room is really nice, especially for the price paid.

Oslo is kinda expensive, but I fit myself finding some pizza slices at 20kr (2 for 30). Not the best deal ever, but quite cheap for the standards indeed, I hope tonight I’ll be eating ...read more...

Christian Ehrlicher: Stopping KDE/windows development

System & Utilities I decided to stop windows development - at least for a while. This means there will be no binary packages from my side for 4.2.4 and 4.3.x but I hope Saro will do them.

The main problem I see is the missing communication between the hobby programmers (like me) and the developers who get paid for their work on KDE. When you take a look at the kde-windows mailing list you will see that there's not much activity. And I don't think there's nothing to discuss... :(

Another problem I've is that I could not fix bugs in kdelibs just because the dependencies are moving fast and since we have to take care for all system libs (png, xml, openssl, pcre, ...). Making sure that they're up-to-date can take a lot of time. And when I finally managed to compile a KDE program I hit compiler errors. This is all fixable but not when you've only a little amount of time for KDE development.

I'm also disappointed by the role of the firms involved in KDE/windows development. ...read more...

Marcus Hanwell (cryos): Avogadro 0.9.5 Released

System & Utilities

Yesterday I tagged the Avogadro 0.9.5 release, you can grab the latest downloads from here. Life has been hectic this last couple of months, and to be honest I have not gotten as much done as I would have liked. Still there are some great additions such as the experimental cartoon ribbon display ported by Tim from the Zodiac Zeden project.

Avogadro 0.9.5

Geoff also worked on getting more screen real estate for the actual display, after we bounced some ideas around over the last few months. I think that looks great, and have always tried to ensure the maximum amount of screen space was devoted to displaying the molecule. I still have a few more ideas, but fear I do not have the time to implement them. Geoff also added a new peptide builder and David has been working tirelessly on plotting spectra.

I have been working on decidedly ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: it got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained

Cutting a long story short, check out my latest example of a less-than-150-lines code (pick your battle: C++ version or Python version) to show the weather status and day forecasts for almost all places in this blue planet, powered by Google, based on QtWebKit. As always, let's start with the screenshot (aka the proof):

I doubt there is a need for this to be a plasmoid, as it will just clutter Plasma with yet another weather applet. But hey, if people like it, I (or someone else, preferably) can make it.

Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: From the Post 2.1.0 Git Vaults, Part 4: No more vertical tabs, revisited

System & Utilities In a previous blog post I showed an experimental prototype that aimed to do away with the vertical tab bar along the left edge of Amarok. The many replies to this post was about 50/50 for and against this idea. In the post, I mentioned that I wanted to add some kind of "breadcrumb" navigation bar to make navigation easier and also to always show the user where he "is", something that the tabs, admittedly, quite nicely accomplished, at least for the lowest level (which browser is active).

Since I had some time off last week, I decided to see how I could improve the original idea and add the breadcrumb interface. I quickly realized that the big vertical, kickoff style, back button was not very pretty, so as you will see, the latest version does away with that completely. It also turned out that when you have a nice breadcrumb bar, having each "category" show its own name, as all the services have been doing so far, really does not make much sense, ...read more...

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): A group to bind them all

System & Utilities

In March, during the time to gather ideas for the GSoC, Klaas Freitag came to us with an idea to integrate Kraft and KMyMoney. This had been discussed before, but no plans had been laid out. So, an idea was added to the KDE ideas list, and there were some talks about that between Thomas Baumgart, the lead developer of KMyMoney, Klaas, and me. From that, we came to the idea of creating a new KDE group for financial applications, with the purpose of coordinating our efforts, just like the PIM or Edu groups.

Sebastian Trueg (trueg): Nepomuk And Some CMake Magic

System & Utilities

And now for some technical build scripting. Some of you maybe know nepomuk-rcgen. It can be used to generate subclasses of Nepomuk::Resource which provide nice wrapper methods around Nepomuk::Resource::property and Nepomuk::Resource::setProperty. Although it has been in need of improvement for quite some time it can be very useful as code gets way more readable.

So far the cmake integration was, well, let’s face it, bad. It was the result of my first attempts at creating a bit more complex cmake macros. Funnily enough the kdepim developers did not find a real solution to the problem of creating source files at cmake-time either. They would have a long list of classes that would be generated in the CMakeLists.txt file.

Today I finally sat down and fixed it. The new macro (currently only available in playground due to the KDE 4.3 feature freeze) does a much better job. It creates the list of source and header files to be generated at cmake-time while the files ...read more...

Alessandro Sivieri (Siv): We all love activities

System & Utilities

Last week I decided to start using activities in a productive way: until then, I have just used them last year, for having the desktop configured for office work (read: with a quiet wallpaper), but I dismissed them when my office time ended.

Activities have been criticized here and there, with that useless button circle in the corner of your desktop; there even existed (and maybe still exists) a plasmoid which removes that circle.

I am between those people who think it is a useful thing (like lots of plasma features), and now I want to get accustomed with using it, and here there are my two current activities:

Sascha Peilicke (saschpe): GSoC week 1-2 wrap up

System & Utilities

Ok, time to write a bit about my progress in the first two GSoC coding weeks. So far, the foundations are laid out, I finally decided which SyncML implementation to use and how to realize what I plan. En plus, some code already hit playground ;-)

First of all I decided to go for libsyncml as my backend. The two other competitors (Funambol C++ client SDK and libsynthesis) either don’t have all the required features (SyncML server mode, OBEX transport) or are difficult to handle from my POV. I did a rather lengthy review for myself and decided that this is the right way to go, even if libsyncml does have some issues here and there.

Before I’d like to go into further details, I’d like to revise what I’d like to achieve:

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Big news

System & Utilities

You may have noticed that I was in port longer than normal between deployments. The reason is that my sea tour is over.

This means I actually get to spend a minute or two on KDE once in a while again! Whee! First up, getting my desktop box running again. It's been out of commission for a few months now, ever since I tried to install PC-BSD on it. Now, don't get me wrong, I love PC-BSD - it's a sweet system, which runs fast and stable, with a good KDE implementation. My box just doesn't like PC-BSD, and will randomly hard-lock. I think it has to ...read more...
