Alessandro Sivieri (Siv): We all love activities

System & Utilities

Last week I decided to start using activities in a productive way: until then, I have just used them last year, for having the desktop configured for office work (read: with a quiet wallpaper), but I dismissed them when my office time ended.

Activities have been criticized here and there, with that useless button circle in the corner of your desktop; there even existed (and maybe still exists) a plasmoid which removes that circle.

I am between those people who think it is a useful thing (like lots of plasma features), and now I want to get accustomed with using it, and here there are my two current activities:

Default activity

Default activity

This one is configured for standard PC usage: my desktop and temp folder, email, weather, ktorrents…

Programming activity

Programming activity

This is the programming activity: I love this wallpaper (but I cannot use more...

Sascha Peilicke (saschpe): GSoC week 1-2 wrap up

System & Utilities

Ok, time to write a bit about my progress in the first two GSoC coding weeks. So far, the foundations are laid out, I finally decided which SyncML implementation to use and how to realize what I plan. En plus, some code already hit playground ;-)

First of all I decided to go for libsyncml as my backend. The two other competitors (Funambol C++ client SDK and libsynthesis) either don’t have all the required features (SyncML server mode, OBEX transport) or are difficult to handle from my POV. I did a rather lengthy review for myself and decided that this is the right way to go, even if libsyncml does have some issues here and there.

Before I’d like to go into further details, I’d like to revise what I’d like to achieve:

  • Being able to sync my mobile against Akonadi
  • Being able to let Akonadi sync against others
  • Configure all that in a comfortable way (don’t mess to much with SyncML)

Michael Pyne (mpyne): Big news

System & Utilities

You may have noticed that I was in port longer than normal between deployments. The reason is that my sea tour is over.

Right now I’m on leave, in the transition period between checking out of my last command and checking into the next one. I will be on instructor duty, responsible for training some of the Navy’s best and brightest (which is to say, I’ll just be one of the many cogs in the training pipeline, but still).

I just got back today from doing some house hunting in the area that I’ll be stationed, looks like I’ve managed to obtain a suitable place.

Of course, with any major transition needs to come some inward reflection. I’ve set aside some goals for myself to accomplish over the next 2 (or so) years as I accomplish my shore tour:

  1. Decide whether I want to stay in the Navy or not. I don’t hate submarines, but then again the Department Head tour that would be next for me would be, if anything, even more stressful. Not only that, but since more...

Troy Unrau: One degree down...

System & Utilities Well folks, it's been a while since I've had time to do anything KDE related. Fortunately, I've now emerged from the smoke mostly intact and with a few extra letters behind my name. The road doesn't end here, however, and as the figure of speech goes: "out of the smoke and into the fire". I start my M.Sc. program in Planetary Sciences (Geophysics) as of September 1st. In the meantime, I get to work for my thesis advisor for the summer and, I guess, get a head start on whatever I'll end up working on...

This means I actually get to spend a minute or two on KDE once in a while again! Whee! First up, getting my desktop box running again. It's been out of commission for a few months now, ever since I tried to install PC-BSD on it. Now, don't get me wrong, I love PC-BSD - it's a sweet system, which runs fast and stable, with a good KDE implementation. My box just doesn't like PC-BSD, and will randomly hard-lock. I think it has to more...

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Okular, PDF and file permissions

System & Utilities There seems to be some controversy about how Okular handles file permissions (sometimes called DRM) in PDF files. I will put here my personal opinions (weird i have to say this since this is *my* blog so when i write here it's always *my* personal opinion).

As a note for those that don't know me much, i was KPDF maintainer from 2004 or so till it's death, mentored the SoC project that created Okular, a regular Okular developer and i'm also the maintainer of poppler since a few time ago, so well, i think we'll agree i know what i'm talking about ;-)

Let's analize the bug-reporter sentence:

"So what I want to know is: why are people putting code into Debian
that limits our freedom? Why are people putting such code into KDE?"

So he wants to KNOW why *we* did this, yet he mails Debian bug tracker. First weird thing man, we have the okular irc channel, the okular mailing list and the kde bug tracker, all this are MUCH BETTER places for knowing. more...

Ariya Hidayat: all the blessings in May

System & Utilities

I was sadly too lazy to update this blog. My only excuse is because there were many good things happened last month. The context here is of course Qt Software and Qt in general.

First thing first: we just open our source code repository. It's git, and it is hosted at You can track every single commit from the engineers inside Qt Software, fantastic to see how certain bug is fixed and to localize regression breakage. For more goodies in the repository, check out what Benjamin, an ex-troll, has written.

But the beauty does not stop here. Now we are also accepting external contributions to Qt. It means that you can help us fixing bugs and implementing features. Read and digest the Contribution Guidelines to find out how. Since the repository was opened, every cool kid and his dogs have cloned it like crazy and we even have merged some of the contributions.

The domino effect. Since now we more...

Vladimir Prus: Linking 101

System & Utilities Recently, I see more and more people having trouble with link-time errors—as if such an error is the worst kind of luck and cannot be fixed by mere mortals. There are many possible reasons, including Java as default language in universities, and alarming spread of header-only-philia, but that's for another post. Here, I want to give a simple diagnostic procedure for link-time errors.

Let's lay some groundwork first. If your job is programming in C++, you need to know what the -I and -L options do, and how they are different. Also, given a full path to a library file (with .a or .so or .lib extension), you should be able to link to that file—in two different ways. If you don't know any of the above already, all hope is lost—you might want to consider other occupations. Otherwise, let's look at the diagnosis steps for most common error—'undefined symbol'.

First, understand where the missing symbol is supposedly defined. Educated guess is usually fine. For example, a symbol named boost::system::foobar is most likely contained in the Boost.System library more...

Johan Thelin: Work - a Qt platform

System & Utilities I'm feeling like a lucky guy - getting to work with Qt on a day-to-day basis. A couple of days back, BitSim, my employer announced a Qt-based embedded hardware platform. Highlights are PXA270, a Spartan FPGA and a radio module. Right now I'm waiting for our demo pair to arrive, so that I can create some sort of demo utilizing the two units and the radio.

Well, now I'm off to work again. Shell scripting this time...

George Kiagiadakis (gkiagia): GSoC week #1

System & Utilities

So, GSoC has officially started :) A week has passed already and I have started hacking on my project, kcall. Here is the result of the first week in an image:

KCall screenshot

KCall screenshot

This is a screenshot of what I have coded so far. It presents a contact list in a tree view. The first level of the tree shows the available accounts (here, “gkiagia” refers to my jabber account) and the second level shows the contacts of this account. I also wanted to have one more level for the contact groups, but I haven’t found yet how to get the contact groups using the TelepathyQt4 library. Right clicking the items in that list brings a popup menu with options. For account items, it allows you to set the account status (online, offline, away, etc…) and for contacts, it allows you to call them. The call function is not yet working, though. I expect to spend my next more...

System & Utilities

Hello again. In my introductory post I declared that I would post regular status updates about my Summer of Code work on Amarok’s playlist - and of course I’m already slacking off.

I started researching and coding towards the end of april so I have almost a month of work to report now. Unfortunately there are no pretty pictures this time because all the work has been under the hood so far.

As Amarok’s playlist uses a model-view paradigm, I have added a new proxy model between the filter proxy and the grouping proxy, so at the moment Amarok’s playlist view displays data that passes through a stack of four models (1 source model + 3 proxy models). GUI work will begin a bit later, at the moment the interface is just a combo box and a button that says “Sort!” which I use for testing. So what does it actually do right now? The good news is that multilevel sorting of the playlist kind of works: the user just has to hardcode a multilevel sorting more...

Marco Martin (notmart): Plasmanetbook breaths

System & Utilities

With the usual disclaimer that is a very early barely working prototype that will be probably massively different from anything final, it's nice to show the screenshot of the other day in action.

So now I did some arrangements in the playground netbook stuff to give a thing that mostly works without too much hassle in the initial configuration and that it's kinda possible to use it as the main shell instead of the desktop.

Ogg version.

Here is possible to see the newspaper activity used for weather and to read feeds (will be able to scroll its contents in the future) and the one used to launch applications, in this video that is nothing else than a folderview, but the final launcher interface will be more like a crossover between a menu and something like krunner

In this video is also possible to see some things that strongly suggest the departure from the "desktop" concept, because when those kinds of devices are treated just like small notebooks they are just not up to the job, since more...

Kenneth Wimer (kwwii): Breathe Icons 1st Release

System & Utilities The Breathe icon team just announced their initial release. Check it out if you haven't seen it yet on the ubuntu wiki or on gnome-look. They've come a long way and are moving ahead at a steady pace. Breathe is an excellent example of the ubuntu artwork community's "theme team" model and proves it's effectiveness and strengths. Breathe is a growing team and is always looking for new contributors. Specifically, they're looking for someone to help with releases and so forth, so any developer with some free time would be highly appreciated.

Alvaro Soliverez (Hei_Ku): Loading KMyMoney files

System & Utilities

This week I have been working on trying to make KMM load files. Finally, I got that done today.

I got into all kind of new classes, refactoring, and so on, and I had to learn a lot, to try to keep the actual changes to the code to a minimum. We don't want to change anything that isn't absolutely necessary. We will have time to do that in subsequent releases.

So, here is a screenshot of the forecast view after loading a test file. I like dark themes, btw. Black Tragedy, in this case.

Luca Beltrame (einar77): KDE Brainstorm Monthly Digest - issue 2

System & Utilities

Hello, and welcome to the second issue of the KDE Brainstorm Digest! This issue comes in slightly late, due to some real time commitments, but I couldn’t leave you without it, could I?

Issue 2 - April 26th - May 29th, 2009

Currently, 181 valid ideas have been submitted in this period, with an average of 6 ideas per day. Adding up to that, we have just 3 invalid ideas and 8 non-idea posts. This means that our user base is quickly getting used to the Brainstorm workflow. Eight proposed ideas were already implemented, and 7 new ideas were submitted to the developers for consideration. One idea was rejected.

This month we don’t see many ideas implemented: in fact, we have no ideas that have been marked as “Done”. This is not because the developers aren’t willing to listen, but because KDE 4.3 Beta 1 was released, and that means that KDE is now on feature freeze. Developers are now focusing on fixing bugs, rather than adding features, so it is very likely that ideas will be more...

Orville Bennett (illogic-al): April's Fool

System & Utilities

I feel like I should blog about something but have nothing particularly compelling to say. As that's never stopped me before, and for no other reason than it's the end of the month and my sidebar tell me I have no entries for May, I'll do it anyway. Time to retreat to the good ol' standard then: Bitch, bitch, moan. You were warned.

First off KDE/Mac stuff. Benjy's back! Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. That means I can have KDE ports languish in the Macports repo and not feel guilty about it. Not that I would but you get the idea. So yes, for the three of you using macports, I have seem them and am actively ignoring them. Well, not really.

The problem is that since someone decided to remove the 4.2.0 tarballs, Macports downloads html 404 pages in their place. The suggested solution of using 4.2.2 tarballs was tried but then I couldn't get kdelibs to compile on my machine. It is entirely more...

Harald Fernengel: Jumpstart KDE/Mac development

System & Utilities

Whenever I try to play around with KDE 4 on Mac OS X, I find myself mostly compiling and installing 3rdparty libraries. Fink and MacPorts ease software installation, but have one disadvantage: Software packages that are already available on Mac OS X are installed again, sometimes differing only in minor versions. I do understand the philosophy behind it - both projects want to ensure maximum consistency and quality. However, it takes time to compile all the dependencies (e.g. perl5) and it might lead to symbol clashes (Qt links to the system’s libiconv, some other KDE dependency to MacPort’s libiconv - boom).

So, to jumpstart things - here’s my repository of dummy Macports portfiles which will force MacPorts into using the system’s libraries. Of course, this should be used with care, will definitely ruin lots of MacPorts packages and is completely unsupported by the MacPorts community. However, it does get shared-mime-info (required for kdelibs) onto your machine in record time.

So, download the Qt/Mac binaries, get more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): What is it with Open Source and Business?

System & Utilities

A whitepaper over on the Register piqued my interest, and then lost it, but then I ran across the Linux Days in Geneva which also has a business slant, and that reminded me again.

For the Linux Days there’s a few talks that do interest me: Michel Rocard, but that’s because it’s Free Software and legal issues and patents and things. It almost makes me wonder why he’s not a member of the Freedom Task Force, which is the FSFE’s legal group — I hang out there acting like a techie and talking to lawyers so that KDE people don’t have to (and, if you’re going to Akademy, bring an FLA). There’s something neat about long term document storage (given the NLUUG conference programme, it wouldn’t have been entirely out of place there either) in ODF; there’s thin clients and OpenSocial.

But the rest of the programme just falls a little flat. While the education track looks interesting enough, other tracks are a little depressing in their “Open Source! low more...

Ben Klopfenstein (benklop): QtEmu - A virtualization frontend

System & Utilities

For the past 6 months or so I have claimed to anyone who asks that QtEmu is about ready for it's 2.0 release - and I think I'm totally right about that. QtEmu is an app that is basically trying to be like vmWare workstation, but better. It's not quite there yet, but it's already pretty good. It is based on the work of uwolfer, the mind behind the massive improvements to KRDC in kde, and he has played a key role in helping me improve it this much.

In the past 6 months or so I have added a number of big features - things like automatic USB support, local file socket VNC support (this makes connections a lot more secure) and a bunch of other things. At the moment I'm pretty sure the only thing holding it back is the fact that VNC screen updates are rather slow - but that's the case in KRDC as well.

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): A day in scam land

System & Utilities So i'm looking for two tickets for FIB now that tickets are sold out.

One goes to google and finds three announcements on craigslist, price is okaish so you contact the posters ... and all you get are scammers.

The first one says "please provide me this details asap so i can start this transaction asap through craigslist they will contact you", a mention to craigslist itself, this must be safe for sure, but then you go to craigslist and see a page that explicitly says that they don't handle transactions at all. The announcer does not answer back once i point her to this page.

The second and third announcements end up being from the same mail address, interesting as one announcement is from Barcelona and the other from London, one asks 400? and other 380

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Public Procurement

System & Utilities

There have been a lot of stories around public procurement of IT services and software lately. Naturally I filter for the ones that say nice things about Free Software or indicate that Free Software is gaining traction in the public sector. I can explain why I feel that governments (at all levels) should prefer Free Software over proprietary software whenever possible, and it comes down to my belief that governments exist to take care of, or improve, the quality of life of their subjects. That’s the moral basis for their existence, and you are right in saying that it’s also stunningly naive of me in practice. So I will claim that governments should do what is best for their people and that short-term TCO calculations, dependency on third parties, vendor lock-in and data hostaging (is there a term for “your own data is stored in a proprietary format that may not even be legal for you to reverse-engineer and extract?”) are not good ways to serve the people. Developing local skills, fostering cooperation and pushing open standards for long-term storage more...

Jonathan Thomas (JontheEchidna): Update on KDE-ish stuff

System & Utilities

KDE/Kubuntu stuff

Hmm, it's been a while.

Right off the bat I'd like to say that I failed at getting user-defined wallpapers in shape for KDE 4.3. :( Things have been pretty busy for me; Kubuntu 9.10 was opened for development and we were knee-deep in package merges. Then I went on a trip the week before string freeze and was unable to do any development work whatsoever. By the time I got back school took up the remaining time I had left, and as a result the Weather Wallpaper is not sporting user-definable weather/wallpaper pairings.

I do have a patch now that re-inserts the pushbutton for the advanced dialog where all that is configurable (it was lost in the port to libplasmaweather) but it's way past string freeze now. There is also a fiddly problem where the custom wallpapers only work in the preview in the Desktop Settings dialog or inside the plasmawallpaperviewer. I'm going to have to just revisit this in 4.4 I suppose.

On the brighter side of things, I'm really enjoying developing for more...

Handheld device syncing never really took off like one might hope it would, even with OpenSync and other bits and pieces. Perhaps the Pre will turn things around for Palm, and I hope at the same time that they put a little more support into Linux (or Free Software Desktop) syncing this time around.

Me, I think my main desktop sync desire right now is my Nokia 6300 phone. Or it would be, if I cared about syncing my phone book with the desktop at all anymore.

I spotted another searching-for-Linux-gadgets kind of post; is it really so hard to find neat gadgets running a Free Software operating system now? I’ve got three on my desk right now I could enthuse about (a Conceptronic NAS, a Freecom MusicPal and a more...

Thiago Macieira (thiago): The Great Crash of 2009, Part II

System & Utilities

So I’m sitting here in my hotel room in Helsinki, after a quick flight from Oslo. In fact, the flight arrived early, and that’s a first time that it has happened for me. I was in the taxi on my way to the hotel 5 minutes before the scheduled time of arrival for the flight.

Rex Dieter (rdieter): koffice-2.0, fedora packages

System & Utilities At long last, koffice-2.0.0 is released. Congratulations all around.

For fedora users interested in trying it out, current plans are to include koffice2 in Fedora 12, and unofficial packages are available from the kde-redhat project for Fedora 10/11 (currently in the unstable repo, as these replace the official/stable koffice1).
