Duncan Mac-Vicar (duncanmv): Facebook on Kopete, take II

System & Utilities

Last week I blogged about Facebook support for Kopete, just after I was able to see my buddies for first time on the screen.

Since then I have made some improvements to message handling and other code cleanups. The code is now available in a git repository at github.

As KDE’s svn trunk is frozen, I will keep it there for now.

You can get packages for openSUSE Factory (version 0.1.2). I gave up trying to build it for openSUSE 11.1, as Kopete API has changed quite a bit. However the package may build on 11.1 plus the KDE 4.2+ repositories. You need libqjson from Flavio Castelli installed (or -devel package if you want to build it).

Roadmap for next 0.1.3:

  • Add caching to avoid downloading the pictures every 3 minutes.
  • More bugfixes

Roadmap for later:

  • Look into adding , searching, and other stuff.

Be aware. This is weeks-old-code. It has not been tested much and has lot of debug messages. Use it if ...read more...

Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Picknicking for Europe

System & Utilities

The mother of my children (MOMC) is in Norway for a few days, leaving me with the kids for the long weekend and the school days following. This is a reversal from our usual roles, where I’m galavanting about to Free Software conferences and she’s at home dealing with the kids (and acting as editor for the town paper). It’s been great weather so far, but how do you keep the kids busy?

Oddly enough it was the EU parliamentary elections that provided a solid friday afternoon’s entertainment. I don’t know how it is elsewhere within the union, but the distinguishing trait of the run up to the elections has been a total lack of a campaign, debate, or even information on what the whole darn thing is about. Sure, there’s a few posters up saying “party X is against Brussels” (have you been there? the Brussels cheese is awesome in its horribleness). Friday’s Trouw had a column decrying the lack of content in the election; saturday’s NRC had a half page on this same lack.

Anyway, ...read more...

Brad Hards (bradh): More on plugging into GCC

System & Utilities

Based on a comment from Taras Glek on my feeble attempts to get a GCC plugin going, I did some work on Dehydra / Treehydra. Its an interesting approach, and one that benefits from the GCC plugin API.

Basically, you can write the checks that you want to do in Javascript (using the Spidermonkey engine from Mozilla). That is more powerful than the declarative approach that mygcc uses, although I'm still struggling a bit with it. Hopefully I can get the rest of the porting to GCC 4.5 done, and start writing checks that are actually useful.

It isn't the easiest thing to get into - the build steps involve a separate checkout from Mozilla of Spidermonkey (using Mercurial), some minor patches to GCC (which has to be built from svn), and then building dehydra and treehydra. Hopefully we can make that package-friendly by the time GCC moves to its release stage.

Chani Armitage (Chani): aaand we’re off! [gsoc week 0]

System & Utilities

well, summer of code officially starts today. :)

I have my git repo. I won’t be starting code today, though. it’s a saturday, and I skipped going to the beach to work on scripty, and I’m going out this evening for once.

the last couple of weeks have been busy. I did do some stuff for summer of code – I got help from #kde-usability in designing a non-scary config UI, and sorted out some other little things. most of the time, though, I was busy with other KDE stuff, and real life.

I’ve been slowly chipping away at the security stuff – now that feature freeze has hit, I can check applets’ behaviour without worrying that it’ll change the next day. once I’ve checked all the applets in kdebase and kdeplasma-addons, I’ll set plasma-overlay (the plasma that runs on the screensaver) to only show applets that are safe. I guess I’ll also have to put something up on techbase about how to make an applet safe; there’s some stuff in plasma’s design/ folder right now.

Sacha Schutz (DrIDK): Webcam for kde : a new way for gluon games ?

System & Utilities
Hi all!

Yesterday I had an idea, to use a webcam input as a controller for games! Like the last nintendo games. So, I was looking on openCV to get the video source and use some video detection function. My plan is to load Webcam picture to KGLTexture, and use them in KGLEngine

Otherwise, I don't understand why KDE has no official webcam librairy/software. Phonon cannot use it currently... Gnome has Cheese, and it's exellent.
So, I create a small KCamWidget worked on openCV. ( look the screenshot)

kcamwidget.cpp

If some people want to work on the beginning of this project, there are welcome! The code source is here ...read more...

Thomas Thym (ungethym): Forget tabs?

System & Utilities
I am hoping to get tabs for KWin in a view month and the Mozilla Project is discussing what innovative concept will come after tabs.

"Reinventing Tabs in the Browser - How can we create, navigate and manage multiple web sites within the same browser instance?" is the questing of the Design Challenge 2009.

What fascinates me:
  1. Another concept of bringing the Internet to the desktop (compared to KDE's approach of integrating the web into the desktop).
  2. How they are thinking into the future and drive real innovation.
  3. How they designed and started the campaign (nice website, many involved specialists (look at "cooperations with" and "partners" at the bottom of the page), ...).
Keep your eyes open. Always think a step ahead. Perhaps there are some good approaches for KDE, too.
E. g.
  1. To visualize search results from nepomuk not in a list but 2D in the dimensions relevance (top-down) and chronology ...read more...

Ivan Cukic (ivan): Lancelot 1.7: I just get carried away…

System & Utilities

It is the time to announce the new version of Lancelot that will be shipping with KDE 4.3.

Lancelot 1.7 - I get carried away...

Most software has code-names for different releases. Lancelot doesn’t, but I’ve decided to dedicate a new tagline to this version - “I just get carried away…”. It is still from the same motion picture as the last one (”In my own idiom” - for Lancelot 1.0).

The news of a new version can never be as grand as the introduction to a new program (especially when a lot of hype preceded it like it was the case for L1.0), so I’ll not bother to make it more grandiose than it is.

Themes

The first thing you’ll notice is that the themes have changed. All themes but Aya which kept its Spartan look.

Chani Armitage (Chani): using git-svn inside an svn repo

System & Utilities

last week I set up my git-svn repos for gsoc, and at first all seemed well. but a few days later, svn decided it wasn’t going to update until it had reclaimed the folders I had converted to git. :P silly svn.

see, I have kdelibs and kdebase checked out from svn, but kdelibs/plasma and kdebase/workspace/plasma are git repositories now. svn didn’t like this. I talked to a guy in #svn who insisted this couldn’t be done and I should give the folder back to svn. I wasn’t going to give up so easily, so I talked things over in #kde-devel… there was this –set-depth and –depth thing in svn update, but the documentation was brief and confusing, so that day I settled on having a separate plasma-git folder and editing cmakelists to compile that instead of plasma.

I wasn’t quite happy with this duplication, though, and something in the back of my mind kept coming back to this depth thing… yesterday I had an idea for how I might be able to use it, ...read more...

Andrea Diamantini (adjam): rekonq 0.1

System & Utilities

Here we are again, speaking about rekonq 0.1 release. This is intended to be just as 1st “inside KDE” public release. In fact, from now on, rekonq is a fully supported KDE project: we have one mailing list, one IRC channel and especially an account on kde bugzilla for our bugs and your feature requests. What can I say more? I’m really proud of it! And we have also a lot of people that like this “child browser” and are supporting us. I really wanna thank you all :)

What else? Two things. First, rekonq 0.1 is obviously NOT ready for production nor feature complete. Take it just as a technology preview. Quite stable, I hope, but just that. If you are really interested on, read full changelog and information on rekonq site.

Second, development season restarts, stay tuned!

Jonathan Riddell (riddell): Canonical AllHands

System & Utilities

The Canonical AllHands meeting is happening a wee bit outside of Barcelona. It is a requirement of all buildings in Barcelona that they have weird and interesting architecture.

This hotel has more floors underground than it has above ground. The translucent showers are a curious feature but my roommate is Aurelien who turns out to be as cool a bloke as you could expect being a KDE developer.

Why Canonical, with these Ferrero Rocher you are really spoiling us no?

I got to meet Zhengpeng who helped make Kubuntu support CKJ back in the day and now works for the OEM team.

Nuno Pinheiro (pinheiro): A clock in mid Air!!

That mens playing with plasma stuff and helping Marco Martin do his magic... So we reworked the plasma air theme so its more air theme and less oxygen... they go anlong very nicly together but they should not use the same elements :).

Marco is working on the really not so fun part of the task bar and panel, were me I got the clock part :) aka "the easy one" :).

Aurelien Gateau: Pissed off. Deeply. Pissed off

System & Utilities

(Sorry this is a rant)

I am in an amazing hotel 40 km near Barcelona right now. I arrived on tuesday evening to attend “All Hands”, a Canonical event just before UDS Karmic. The weather is really nice, the tracks are challenging and stimulating, and I get to meet coworkers coming from 26 different countries.

So why I am pissed off? Because apparently, stupid Air France/Roissy Charles de Gaulle employees were not clever enough to put my luggage in my plane. They announced it would be in Barcelona at 12:30 on Wednesday, then delivered to the hotel in the afternoon, but this turned out to be too complicated for them and my luggage did not arrive. It was then scheduled to arrive in the evening, then maybe by night. At 2am I got to bed, tired of waiting for it. This morning it was still not there. Apparently it arrived in Barcelona at midnight, and they still need to bring it to the hotel. Right now it’s 11:30, it’s still not there and I feel more frustrated than ...read more...

Sebastian Trueg (trueg): Your (Our) Nepomuk Ideas

System & Utilities

In a way Nepomuk in KDE is still a rather young and experimental project. We are still using a java storage backend since the Virtuoso one is not stable yet, we cannot track all file operations which can lead to orphaned meta data, applications so not use the theoretical full power of the framework, etc.

But I think this is OK. Nepomuk creates a new way of dealing with desktop data, even a new way of development (including ontologies). It is bound to take time, also because development it is not as fancy as for example Plasma and also a lot more complex. Thus, we should see the achievements so far positive. Apart from the existing frameworks and application integration there seems to be a trend towards semantic desktop ideas in general which is also an achievement of the Nepomuk project. There surely is a lot of potential.

On a more practical note there is one thing that has been missing for a long time: a starting point for developers wanting to help with Nepomuk. Sure, we have ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: Chrome Experiments, Flash-killer, Monster Evolution

System & Utilities

These days I am juggling balls. Beside fixing QtWebKit-related bugs, writing more examples on using QtWebKit, I am helping the Kinetic guys with Graphics View optimizations, and working on new Graphics View feature I still can't elaborate (sorry for the teaser :-). On top of that, I already started to work on Qt Script, learning the intricacies of JavaScript along the way, stress-testing Kent's Qt Script binding generators, and surely also playing around with the brand-new Qt Script debugger in Qt 4.5. For the latter, even if you are not really into Qt Script, I highly recommend giving it a try, at least watch the screencast from Kent for a start.

Unless you stayed under the rock for the last few weeks, you already heard about Chrome Experiments. These are some extremely cool demos designed to run in a web browser. Of course, there are already tons of demos out there. Chrome Experiments are however different. It relies on a high-performance browser. ...read more...

Michael Jansen: KDE Common Problems: Ctrl+W shortcut doesn't work in app XYZ

System & Utilities

See Bug 190412 for an explanation. The problem is a little broader than the bug reports. See Bug 193085 for a more detailed explanation of the problem.

The problem was me fixing khotkeys without completely adapting it to the new global shortcuts framework in place for kde 4.x . I just didn't realize the consequences. Khotkeys in 3.x ungrabbed the shortcut if the condition was not met or the khotkeys was inactive. In other word whenever the focus was not on an konqueror window ctrl-w was freed. With 4.2 that important bit of functionality was lost. ctrl-w was grabbed all the time. My fault.

If you are on kde 4.2 and want to have your keys back then go to the input actions kcm (kcmshell4 keys) and remove all shortcuts associated with inactive hotkeys. Or go to the global shortcuts kcm (kcmshell4 keys) and disable all khotkeys shortcuts you don't like.

With 4.3 inactive global shortcuts are not grabbed anymore. I made the change last ...read more...

Michael Jansen: KDE Common Problems: My 'e' ky dos not work

System & Utilities

That is some kind of unexpected comeback from a classic out of the pre kde 4.0 development time. I once managed to break the 'e' key for all when working on khotkeys. Me fixing khotkeys exposed a qt bug. Qt did parse the "Win+e" string from kde 3.x as 'e' because it didn't recognize the Win modifier. It is called Meta in qt. We fixed the symptom because we couldn't fix the cause and everything went smoothly for some time.

Then reports about that problem having a comeback started to creep in but i couldn't get my hand on someone experiencing it. Not everybody looks my way when having keyboard problems. The last days comawhite - a irc regular - had the problem and we could pinpoint the cause.

The problem this time appeared because of a different reason. comawhite is a gentoo user and his x11 setup didn't provide a modifier usable as the meta key. You can check that with xmodmap -pm. I get:

  1. xmodmap: up to 4 keys per modifier, (keycodes in parentheses):

Albert Astals Cid (TSDgeos): Buenos Presagios (Good Omens)

System & Utilities So yesterday i finished reading Buenos Presagios the translation of Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, a book written in 1990 and that has the Spanish first edition on ... April 2009 ... it's intriguing how some editorials decide to translate not so great books asap and better ones are left on the dust for almost 20 years.

And now onto the book, it's my first Gaiman book, but my n-th Pratchett one and i have to say it lives to the expectation.

It's a novel about the end of the world because of the Armageddon, the coming of the Antichrist, with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a witch that did 300 years of exact predictions and an earth-living Angel and Demon that prefer to work together instead of for their far away bosses. All that mixed with the great humour that Pratchett gives to all his books, will have to read some Gaiman to see if it's good too (Just saw he's the writter of Stardust, i haven't ...read more...

Lydia Pintscher (Nightrose): UserBase Competition - Round 3

System & Utilities

Two weeks have passed since I announced round 2 and I am very happy with the result. The Amarok page improved a lot and is ready for the release of Amarok 2.1. Many thanks go to Karthikp, the winner of round 2! Awesome work! You definitely get a beer when we meet.

So who is next? Plasma! A few days ago the Plasma page on UserBase was a sorry little copy of the Plasma FAQ. Einar moved the FAQ already and was kind enough to start the new Plasma page. Now it needs more people to fill the missing spots. This is where you come in! Go to UserBase, get an account (non-OpenID login now possible as well thanks to danimo o/) and start on either the main Plasma page or updating the FAQ where needed. This is a good way to get started with contributing to KDE and at the same time helping fellow users. As in previous rounds a beer (or similar drink of your choosing) ...read more...

Sacha Schutz (DrIDK): When Convolution matrix meets KGLShader

System & Utilities Today I have implemented Matrix Convolution as a shader for KGL. Matrix convolution is an easy way to create simple effects with a simple matrix computation.
For example, you can use it in Gimp.
But the difference between Gimp and KGL, is so important. Gimp use the CPU and KGL use the GPU thanks shaders! So, now you can easily make realtilme animation with convolution effects what can not do CPU.
Thanks olivier gueudelot for the idea!

So , look this :
Normal Texture {0,0,0, 0,1,0, 0,0,0}

Contrast effect {0,-1,0, -1,5,-1, 0,-1,0}

Border detection {0,1,0, 1,4,1, 0,1,0}

Its been a while since I did anything productive in KDE land, so thought I'd try to do something in a morning. Its hard freeze time, so that should be bug fixing. Bug 185532 was something I'd been thinking over for a while.

That bug basically deals with XPS documents that didn't render correctly with RTL text. It looked like a fairly standard Right-to-Left text problem, and I assumed there was just something I hadn't handled because none of the documents I look at are Right-to-Left. I am, after all, ignorant of both Hebrew and Arabic.

The fix turned out a bit more complicated, and I think also fixes up some other XPS rendering issues. If you have a collection of XPS documents, especially anything with Arabic or Hebrew text, and are OK with building KDE and applying patches, I'd appreciate any feedback. You can find the patch on KDE's ReviewBoard

Guidance:
1. If your document works differently to an unpatched Okular, please add a comment at Bug 185532
2. If your document ...read more...

Ariya Hidayat: the daylight seems to want you just as much as I want you

System & Utilities

Like I wrote before, last week I was in Florence for the third installment of Pycon Italia.

I must admit, it was absolutely a fantastic event, so kudos to the the organizer! Everything went without glitches, the auditorium was spacious, coffee breaks and lunch were without compromise. And thanks to our lovely translators, we have on-the-fly, quasi real-time translations both English-to-Italian and Italian-to-English. I guess this is something any others non-English conferences need to copy, it was definitely awesome to be able to follow few talks presented in Italian. Of course, I need to say that it gives a different feeling (for a Python conference) when some VIPs like Guido von Rossum and Alex Martelli were there.

Both my Advanced Graphics Programming with PyQt and David's PyQt for Desktop and Embedded Devices were well received. Things could still have ...read more...

Thomas Capricelli (orzel): feedback about converting eigen2 to mercurial

System & Utilities

This week-end we did the final conversion of the eigen2 source code repository. I shall describe here the few problems we had, as a feedback to the community.

Eigen original purpose was to help provide linear algebra for several KDE parts. As such, it was until now developed inside the KDE repository, which (still) uses subversion. Let it be clear that KDE did a wonderful job at hosting eigen repository, even though several accounts needed to be created for people who only contribute to eigen and not KDE as a whole. Eigen is getting big enough to live and release its own way , but eigen keeps very strong relationships with KDE.
Here is the script that was used for the conversion. The version of mercurial (and of the mercurial convert extension) was 1.2.1.

hg convert https://orzel@svn.kde.org/home/kde
    --authors eigen.authors
    --config convert.svn.tags=tags/eigen
    --config convert.svn.branches=branches/eigen
    --config convert.svn.trunk=trunk/kdesupport/eigen2
    eigen.hg

We faced several problems. Fortunately all but one could be resolved patching python code. That would have been a ...read more...
