26.07.2016 #30: GSoC with KDE Now – 8
Hey ! I’m making KDE Now, an application for the Plasma Desktop. It would help the user see important stuff from his email, on a plasmoid. It’s similar to what Google Now does on Android. To know more, click here. Time sure passes fast when you are enjoying something. And so, another week has passed and I’m back with another status update. Things look very very good from here on. At least, not until we decide to change something drastic that I hadn’t proposed earlier😄. Last week was rough. I was struggling with viral fever and throat infection for th...
14.08.2018 The Joy of GSoC :)
Wooo... this is the last day of coding phase of GSoC. I am writing this blog to share my experience and work done in the coding phase. I want to specially thank my mentor David Rosca for his help, suggestions and reviews. This was my first exposure to the KDE community and I am proud that it was great. I really enjoyed the whole program from proposal submission - intermediate evals - then now this final evaluation. Also, I had learned a lot working on my project. Frankly speaking, I didn't knew about i18n and l10n much but with the help of my mentor now I have a quite good understanding of how...

30.01.2018 Polishing Plasma 5.12
Igor Ljubuncic of Dedoimedo published his review of the Plasma 5.12 beta recently. As always, he’s very thorough, and points out out issues that keep Plasma from being A+ quality. A major part of our Usability and Productivity initiative is honestly acknowledging user feedback and criticism with humility instead of defensiveness or dismissal. That way, rather than engaging in pointless arguments, we can focus on fixing problems! With our aggressive focus on user satisfaction, we read these kinds of reviews very carefully and take their comments seriously. I wanted to provide a ...
29.05.2018 Playing with coroutines and Qt
Hello! I was recently wondering about the status of the coroutines in C++ and I found several implementations. I decided to choose this one for my experiment. It’s simple and easy to use and works in Linux and Windows. My goal was to try to find a way to have code running asynchronously without waiting for signals to trigger my slots and avoiding to call QCoreApplication::processEvents or creating a QEventLoop in the stack. My first approach was to convert the processEvent function of a custom event dispatcher into a coroutine and use yield. After several failures, I decided not to conti...
16.08.2012 Associating Firefox Profiles with KDE Activities
As a heavy user of the Activities feature, I’ve always had two major itches. One was addressed when KDE 4.9 finally brought the ability to set activity window rules. The other was how only some applications had the necessary (XSMP) compliance to work properly with activities and its session restoring – in particular, a lack of compliant web browsers. In fact, to date, the only apparently fully XSMP compliant web browser I know of is Konqueror, full stop. And while Konqueror is a pretty decent browser, its lack of a Firebug-esque DOM inspector made it increasingly inadequate for my...
29.08.2012 Is Open Source democratic?
For Aristotle the underlying principle of democracy is freedom, since only in a democracy the citizens can have a share in freedom. In his recent post, Glyn Moody asks an important question – “Can Open Source be democratic?” He describes how Free Software emerged as a distributed, bottom-up system of writing code. The central defining aspects of that culture are a uniquely open process not just of programming but also of its organization, and a close relationship between programmers and users. Effectively, users and programmers together were both contributors, they colla...
