24.03.2008 John Layt: Easter progress on printng
Well it's Easter, and rather than being somewhere warm or interesting (or both), I'm stuck here in cold and wet London. This is partly due to my own lack of organisation, but also due to some dodgy fraudster types who managed to clone my debit card and withdraw large sums of my cash from an ATM in Tunisia (I haven't even been there!). Ironic really, given the number of banking security projects I've worked on :-) Well the cash has been refunded, I've been waiting two weeks for the replacement card to arrive, and without easy access to cash I'm reluctant to board a plane or train to anywhere, ...

02.10.2008 Michael Krog: How to create a minimal KDE 4 installation?
I want to install a small, but still maintainable, Linux with KDE 4 on my Geode based hardware for my POS system - Qash. But I find it to be somewhat the opposite of 'easy to do'!I would like to keep it under 1 GB installed and it would be nice if it is Debian based, because it is what Im experienced with. I tried out with the Ubuntu 8.04 minimal. After installing a command line only system, I have already used around 600 MB.I then tried to pull in kubuntu-kde4-desktop, but that would take additonal 1.7 GB. What I need is a (Debian-based) Linux thats performs well on Geode(gfx included) and h...

16.11.2009 RE: Lazy man's FreeBSD
DesktopBSD 1.6-RC2 has been released . "Primary changes since 1.6-RC1: improved video detection; no more annoying package database messages when an installation/upgrade failed; upgrading from 1.0 should work fine now; cups problems are hopefully gone; KDE 3.5.6; K3B 1.0." 24.01.2010 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): gwenview: user friendly?
Carla Schroder wrote an editorial piece this week on Linux Today (a website I enjoy and frequent daily via their RSS feeds) entitled Editor's Note: What is User-friendly, Really?. In it, Carla claims to be "90% satisfied" with KDE3 and "60% satisfied" with KDE SC 4.3. Why? "KDE 4 sacrifices customizability and efficiency for glitz. [...] There is a trend to dumb Linux down in a fruitless attempt to appeal to Jane and Joe Sixpack. Which is wasted effort, because in doing so computer-savvy users are being ignored and frustrated, and Jane and Joe Sixpack don't care anyway." What's interesting ab...
06.06.2012 Last week in Qt development (week 22 2012)
This post is part of an ongoing series about developments and discussions in Qt. Some parts of this report are still under discussion, and don’t necessarily reflect the final state of Qt 5. The target audience is people involved in Qt development itself, but without the time to follow everything that happens, and others with a strong interest in Qt, Qt 5, and the community. This week we cover a rewrite of QVector for code sharing with QString and QByteArray, improvements in the printing system, efforts to make Qt build with some features removed. QVector implemented with QArrayData inte...
21.01.2010 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): A cake for Shaun
Well, Shaun, here’s a chocolate cake for you. it’s very similar to the pecan cake I wrote earlier — but closer to the “ultimate chocolate brownie” recipe that I based both off of. Chocolate cake for Shaun: Mix three eggs and a cup of (brown or cane) sugar and a tsp. of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt for 10 minutes on high with an electric mixer. Alternately, show the world you’re amazingly buff with a hand whisk. Optionally add chopped nuts. Stir in 100g melted pure chocolate (that’s 4 squares in North America, I believe). Sift one and a quarter c...
