LinuxMint 15 delivers smooth alternative to Ubuntu

System & Utilities

The crafters of the LinuxMint distro are in a ticklish position. Mint is based on Ubuntu, which in turn, is based on Debian, which in turn, has the moveable feast of the Linux kernel as its underpinning.

26.10.2015 Interview with Laura
Could you tell us something about yourself? My name is Laura, and I currently live in Calgary, Alberta. Aside from 2D art, I model/sculpt with Blender, Maya, and ZBrush. I enjoy running and board sports, and I love science and cats! Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both? For the moment, I only paint/illustrate as a hobby or for free, but in the future I hope to make my hobby my profession once I gain more experience and skill. I hope to apply my 2D/3D skills to the entertainment and medical industry. What genre(s) do you work in? My favorite genre would be cartoon art. Child...
28.12.2015 Experimental The Unarchiver backend for Ark
Five years ago, the Free Software Foundation announced The Unarchiver as a free tool to extract RARv3 archives. In that blog post, you can notice how the FSF hoped that existing GUI extraction tools like Ark would integrate support for The Unarchiver. That’s because The Unarchiver‘s GUI is only available on Mac OS, while on Linux there are only the CLI frontends (which are lsar to list an archive and unar to unpack an archive). Currently, Ark requires two non-free utilities to handle RAR archives: unrar to open and extract an existing RAR, and rar to create a RAR archive from scrat...
15.09.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): On KDE4 Performance
Andreas Pakulat recently blogged about performance issues with KDE 4.1 on his new desktop system. While I agree with some of the comments on that blog entry that his blog would've been better off on the kde-devel or even the kde-core-devel mailing list, since he's uncorked the genie I figured I may as well offer some commentary on the matter for the blogosphere. It's probably useful since it's an issue a lot of people are running into, and it's not fun when you do.A Line in the SandFirst, I'd like to discuss what constitutes an acceptable experience with KDE 4. There will always be some things...
24.01.2010 Lim Yuen Hoe (moofang): The Web, the Desktop, and the Google between
I haven’t written a proper tech article since before I (re-)started this blog, so I thought it was high time. Besides, I’ve been wanting to write this post ever since I read some articles on Google’s Chrome OS, around the time right after my old blog vaporized. So there’s a couple of buzzwords to hopefully sucker you into clicking the ‘more’ button and actually reading the article – It’s about Google’s upcoming Chrome OS and it’s implications for the web, the desktop and the browser, as well as why desktop evolution can take an altern...
02.11.2011 Listaller Project – An introduction
This article is not directly KDE-related, so you might want to skip it. But if you’re interested in a cool project simplifying the way software is distributed on Linux, read on! At time, if you develop a new application “Foo”, you as an upstream developer let other experienced people distribute your application in Linux-Distribution X through a package. Packaging an application is not as easy as some people think, a package of high quality requires some work. And the package wants to be maintained. The upstream -> downstream way we have at time works very nice, although ...
06.04.2012 Writing a Prezi clone with HTML5, SVG, and Javascript
The idea The other day, I took it upon myself to write a browser-based Prezi-like app without using flash. Condition: It should run purely client-side. It was also an experiment in evaluating whether the current APIs available in modern browsers are enough to handle the task. What follows is an account of what works, what doesn’t, and what could be done better. SVG vs Canvas When you’re building a rich graphics-intensive app like Prezi, you usually have two ways of rendering content: SVG and Canvas. 1. SVG provides a neat DOM that can be manipulated with existing DOM handling javas...
12.01.2014 QNX Delivers Power of Choice to Automotive Industry with Broad Range of User Experiences at 2014 CES
"Discover new acoustic experiences in the latest QNX technology concept cars; control infotainment and navigation services with ease, using a flexible, multi-modal user interface; try out new cloud services that will transform how consumers, automakers, and dealers interact with vehicles LAS VEGAS, 2014 International CES North Hall, Booth 536, January 7, 2014 QNX Software Systems Limited, a global leader in software platforms for in-car electronics, today is demonstrating how its latest innovations in infotainment, acoustics, and cloud technology offer a potent mix for creating new, user-centr...
03.11.2008 Martin Meredith: Starting from scratch: RAID + LVM
Ok, so working with RAID and LVM is… well… not easy. I have three hard drives in this machine, all of different sizes, (160Gb, 200Gb, and 300Gb), and I’m gong to be setting these up so that I have a  RAID-5 made up of three 160Gb Partitions, (with LVM on top) a RAID-1 Partition of 40Gb (no LVM) and the rest split between boot, swap, and misc. However, the ubuntu alternative CD doesn’t make this easy, and, one of my favourite annoyances is that once you configure RAID, you cannot make changes to the partitions on the disk where you have RAID partitions (hidden away in t...
18.02.2009 Alexander Dymo (adymo): KDE 4.2 on EeePC Mini Review
I was going to continue my series of KDE 4.2 reviews, but two weeks ago I've installed KDE 4.2 on my EeePC and couldn't wait any longer to share my experience with that.I've been a happy owner of an EeePC 901 with 20G flash drive, 1G RAM and Linux preinstalled since September 2008. All I can say is that it's a best laptop I ever had. I knew EeePC will be useful for me, but I didn't know it will be THAT useful. I take it with me to the university for lectures and labs, I use it to surf the internet, work and make skype calls when I'm not at home. And yeah, I even take it with me when I go out w...
06.12.2009 T
A few months ago I submitted my work for the Social Desktop Contest, organized by Frank of openDesktop.org. As you may remember, my submission was the social about dialog for KDE apps, currently only in Amarok, but I hope to move it to KDElibs when my university thesis work, my work work and other IRL stuff gives me a break. Turns out, lots of people seemed to really like it (thank you for voting!), and it won the first prize, which was a Dell Mini 10v netbook with Ubuntu – a really great and appropriate gift for a Free Software contest. Unfortunately Dell has a really weird way of doing...
