09.03.2008 Josef Spillner: Multiplayer scenario
Somewhen after midnight last night presentations and some chatting after each I think that while the software required to achieve high-quality free multiplayer gaming isn’t there yet, the individual puzzle pieces already let us forebode a scenario of some sort, as a guide of what shall (or will) be possible. We have GSoC 2008 Jabber. As soon as he finds Eve, he’ll launch a game of Chess and selects his favourite client, e.g. Tagua since she’s on KDE 4. Hurray for protocol compatibility! Alice joins as a spectator and is totally jealous of the two players. She decides to found...
15.03.2016 3.0 Pre-alpha 3 is out!
Today was an important day for the Krita project! We entered feature freeze! That means that from now on until the release of Krita 3.0, which is planned for April 27th, we won’t be working on adding new features, but we’ll be fixing bugs, fixing bugs and fixing more bugs! If you want to help us identify and triage bugs, read this article: “Ways to Help Krita: Bug Triaging“. It’s the first of what’s intended to be a series of reference articles on ways to help Krita grow and become better and better. Since Krita 3.0 is frozen, we know exactly which Kickstart...
08.08.2016 My experiences with SOCIS 2016
Hello dear readers! This post is a small synopsis of my experiences so far as a student in this years Summer of Code in Space, where I shall recount the whole adventure of integrating Sentinel-2 data into Marble Virtual Globe. Sentinel-2 data.So what exactly is this data, and why is it important to us? Well, Copernicus is the worlds largest single earth observation programme directed by the European Commission in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA). ESA is currently developing seven missions under the Sentinel programme. Among these is Sentinel-2, which provides high-resolutio...
10.03.2008 George Goldberg: Decibel in 14 easy steps
In case the title has misled you, this post is completely free from satire, and is literally a step by step guide to trying out Decibel. 1) Decibel has some dependencies. You will need telepathy-qt and tapioca-qt compiled and installed to compile it. Some of the demos we are going to use also require a tapioca-voip project (the versions in kdesupport are not yet supported by decibel). They can be got from the SVN repository by issuing the following commands: svn co svn co
22.03.2008 Sebastian Trueg: Nepomuk Performance and GUI goodies
Some words on performance Nepomuk performance has always been a bit of a problem. Last but not least this was due to the D-Bus communication with the Nepomuk server that took place all the time. Don't get me wrong, D-Bus is pretty fast, but you always get the overhead of the marshalling of messages and routing them through the D-Bus daemon. So with the new QLocalServer and QLocalSocket in QT 4.4 which introduce Windows compatibility, I re-enabled the Soprano local socket communication which is a lot faster. Now the Nepomuk server provides two interfaces: the good old and very easy to use D-Bus...
14.04.2008 Martin Meredith: Setting up networking on an ubuntu server
Ok, by popular demand (aka ompaul) I’ve decided to do a mini-howto on setting up networking on an ubuntu server, for those who are new to it. In Ubuntu itself, when you install the desktop version, you get a nifty little tool called “Network Manager” (you may have noticed the icon, espescially if you have wireless) which pretty much does everything for you. However, if you’re using the server, without a GUI then this isn’t generaly available. So, where to start? It really depends on your network setup, you need to know a few things about your network before you st...
21.04.2008 Adriaan de Groot (adridg): Fear this fully operational battle station
The bug squad is doing impressive things. Just sorting through all the bugs is a big thing to do. As our range of platforms expands, this becomes a bigger job because the platform the bug may manifest on becomes more and more niche (or, for the KDE4 Windows ports, less niche but also less popular under the current set of developers). And I can appreciate the dedication of the bug squad because some bug reports and bug reporters are downright unpleasant. We get occasional angry ALL CAPS messages to the webmaster or sysadmin or somewhere else from bug reporters; there's not much to do about them...
21.08.2010 Harald Sitter (apachelogger): Ubuntu One – Technical Aspects
Following my post on Ubuntu One in KDE I would now like to take a closer look at how Ubuntu One works using KDE technologies and what the current state of affairs is. So be prepared for a lot of technical blah Something I need to make clear up front is that the KDE client does not connect to the Ubuntu One servers itself. This will probably sound odd to you, so let me explain just how both the KDE and GNOME clients generally work. There is a helper application for authentication (in up to 10.04 called ubuntuone-auth, in 10.10 and above ubuntu-sso-client) that handles authentication to Ubuntu...
11.01.2012 Architectures and ABIs detailed
Yesterday I wrote about instruction set and ABI manuals. Today I’d like to go into details about the ABIs I listed there. This was done mostly as a summary for me: it’s tiresome to search for the information in the manuals, especially since some of the manuals are PDFs without links. For example, I never remember what is the order of the registers used in parameter passing on x86-64. So what you’ll find here is a listing of what I found interesting for when I might need to read or write assembly code.As a bonus for you, dear reader, I added a few words about each platform.Fir...
10.03.2012 My summer of code journey [part3]
The Communication Bonding period and phase before the first evaluation! With the results out :-) and my proposal being selected, all i could do was be happy!! :P I was delighted, but i was also a bit nervous. As a newbie with an ambition to finish everything i have promised in my proposal, what lay ahead was a mountain of a task! It took me some time start with the development as somewhere during the time the results got out, i was experimenting with my linux and i have absolutely no idea what i did that led to breaking of my hard drive. That meant getting a new hard drive, installing linux, ...
