23.04.2008 Roland Wolters (liquidat): Microsoft’s eco system: cracks in the reliability
an attempt to push Ogg Vorbis out of the field. The basic idea was that every player could be used on any Windows System which had Windows Media Player 10 installed. And that every player would play any music sold in any PlayForSure store. The shortcoming for the user would be that the players and music wouldn’t work outside of this system (Apple, Linux, Windows 2000, Windows XP without the WMP 10, etc., other MP3 players). And if the user wanted to switch to a new computer, he/she had to re-download a licence for the new computer. That’s a usual problem with DRM, but is important ...

26.09.2013 The End of the Google Summer of Code
The GSoC coding period has ended last Monday. In this blog post, I will summarize what I have done during the summer, to give a general idea of what you can expect from a future version of Nepomuk, if my work is accepted by the Nepomuk maintainers. The source code of the first two projects is available in the steckdenis-gsoc2013 branches of the nepomuk-core and nepomuk-widgets Git repositories. The browser plugin can be found in the scratch/dsteckelmacher/nepomukintegration.git scratch repository. The Nepomuk Query Parser The first part of my GSoC project was to implement a new ...
07.08.2013 A Nepomuk Integration Plugin for Konqueror
Last week, I presented an idea about indexing messages from webmails in Nepomuk. The summary of this idea is to implement a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome and Konqueror. This extension parses the DOM tree of every page visited by the user that belongs to a webmail. When e-mails are found, they are extracted and stored in a temporary file. Nepomukfileindexer then quicks in and indexes these e-mails in the Nepomuk database. The reason why I started this experiment is because many users use webmails instead of mail client programs like KMail or Thunderbird. The information about these...
12.03.2014 making friends with kontact again
I've used Kontact (KDE's full feature groupware app) since it was available. I used KMail on its own before that. In that time I had never (!) reset the configuration or started from a clean start. I just migrated from version to version carrying over all my settings and local mail as new version became available. This means I went through the various epochs: when IMAP became the better supported system; grouwpare server support; akonadi; semantic search integration (both Nepomuk and Baloo) with the same configuration and data on disk. The last several months had become amazingly painful with Ko...
29.04.2008 Holger Freyther (zecke): Looking back at Guademy
I have attended WebKit and the Qt integration, produced some Qt 4.4. While preparing the slides I was in a constant wow mode. It is incredible what the Trolls added to Qt 4.4. It was probably a bit too much but it highlights what a team of excellent programmers can achieve when they focus on a common goal. Qt developers keep on rocking! It was nice to catch up with some of my fellow KDE developers, see some GNOME developers, talk with local developers. I think events like the Guadec are really helpful, not only you can catch up with developers from your village, but also to see people from othe...

06.09.2016 Akonadi/KMail issues on Tumbleweed?
So if you, like me, have experienced how smoothly Akonadi deals with crashes and think it is still annoying, there's a solution. The problem is caused by Xapian which creates some nice backtraces but until it is fixed you are stuck with a crash every ~minute. The solution is in this email from Christian Boltz:I created a repo with the previous version of libxapian, and akonadi-* and baloo linkpac'd from Factory (so rebuilt against the old libxapian): https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/home:cboltz:branches:openSUSE:FactoryPackages at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/cboltz:/b...

15.05.2008 Gilles Caulier: digiKam running under eeePC
Yesterday, i have recieve a private mail from an Italian photo-journalist named Claudio Giovannini who use digiKam under an Claudio use eeePC as a computer relay with photo agencies. He download pictures on the computer, mark files using IPTC, reduce image sizes, and sent files on the web by FTP. Sound like eeePC is a perfect compagnon for photo-journalists.
