Sharing Internet Connections

Developing tile imageProtecting your computer when you're online is good. If you have multiple computers in your home or small business, protecting all of them is also good--especially if you can share your internet connection. Dru Lavigne demonstrates how to allow other computers to use the network safely with a FreeBSD or similar Unix system and fwbuilder.

14.05.2008 Will Stephenson: Network Management in KDE 4.1
Today I took the plunge and merged the Solid network management infrastructure into KDE SVN trunk, where it will soon be released as part of KDE 4.1. Here's a summary of what it includes. Since what follows is Long, Save Planet[KDE|OpenSUSE] and read more for details. Network Management in KDE 4.1 consists of the following components: An abstraction of network status and networking system configuration methods (kdebase/workspace/libs/solid/control). With this apps can find out which network devices are present in the system (similar to HAL, but with more run-time information present), what the...

07.03.2016 We are digging a hole
Riccardo, this morning, at CERN showing a beatiful post As you have read in the last post, some funny things happen in the Cafè group of w2l; there are some other nice stories which deserve to be telled, but the one’s I’m going to talk about is different from the others. If you have read some of my post you would have understood I’m not mentally sane. Okay, no debate about this, please. One beatiful day I met a friend who destroyed my mental sanity. Then, I started spamming it overall. In the Cafè group, one nice night, I’ve posted a funny video, this: http://...
14.11.2016 Interview with Katharina
Could you tell us something about yourself? My name is Katharina and I am from Germany. I study in Cologne and share a flat with my fiancé and three rabbits. Do you paint professionally, as a hobby artist, or both? Drawing is mainly a hobby for me, to express myself and getting my thoughts together. But from time to time I do a little freelance work, mostly fanart of games. What genre(s) do you work in? My works are mainly fantasy inspired, and I try to communicate through them. I like to address topics such as environmental protection and animal rights. For me, perfect fantasy drawings ...

07.03.2008 Nikolaj Hald Nielsen: Nearing first alpha, and lots of cool new stuff
Its been little while since I wrote a nice long update about the state of Amarok 2, and we have been getting a few complaints that there is not enough ews being posted, so I will try to remedy that here. And I have a nice pile of screenshots ready for you! First up though, we have decided to put a feature freeze in effect starting at the end of this month. This is the first small step towards an eventual release of Amarok 2.0, and hopefully it will help us get it ready sooner rather than later. This also means that we are at the point where bug reports actually start to become useful. More o...
20.05.2010 Helio Castro (heliocastro): Warming up - Multimedia and Edu Sprint
Long time, no post... So, this probably is the first post *from* the multimedia sprint, after an interesting internet setup which a fire alarm was a crucial component As usual, lost airplane connections could not be missing in my journey, this time relaxed for the company of two brazilian coleagues, Tomaz e Alexandre. In the end, we passed by two Portugal cities before arrive in Gen
25.04.2011 Plasma NM: Bluetooth tethering
Two weeks ago Alex Fiestas contacted me for us to fix one of the often requested features in Bluedevil: tethering (use of a bluetooth device, usually a cell phone, to access the Internet wirelessly). Last year during Solid Sprint in Madrid he and Will Stephenson worked on that (I also helped) but we still did not figure out how to make it work as easily as possible. Well, we are getting close...Tethering needs support from both Bluedevil and Plasma NM, and they must cooperate to a certain degree to register the connection in NetworkManager. After some research and some answers from the Network...
07.05.2011 Top 5 Planet V12N blog posts for week 18
Top 5 Planet V12N blog posts for week 18 The VMware community is a unique social community with lots of collaboration, and people consistently trying to help each other out.  I think this makes this social circle more unique than some other social media circles out there.  For example check out the first blog post by Jason Boche, he has offered up his own lab infrastructure and bandwidth for anyone to test the VMware View iPad client.  Very cool! A couple of people have asked me how do I select the 5 blog posts for the week.  Giving back to the community is one of the qu...
23.04.2012 Open Science, Open Access and Open Source
I have been thinking this over for quite a while, and have written this post several times over in my mind. As an undergraduate student I remember admiring scientists and imagining how amazing it must be to have a job where you got to discover new things, think of better solutions to problems facing our society and making the world a better place. As my studies continued I aspired to become one of those researchers, and made the decision to take my studies further and applied to do a PhD. As a PhD student I enjoyed learning more about materials, and was excited to be working with gold nanopart...
