KDE NetworkManagement Sprint Day Three and Wrapup

System & Utilities

On Sunday the work continued at a furious pace. Dario carried on moving the connection list generating code out of the applet and into the KDED module.

25.04.2011 Plasma NM: Bluetooth tethering
Two weeks ago Alex Fiestas contacted me for us to fix one of the often requested features in Bluedevil: tethering (use of a bluetooth device, usually a cell phone, to access the Internet wirelessly). Last year during Solid Sprint in Madrid he and Will Stephenson worked on that (I also helped) but we still did not figure out how to make it work as easily as possible. Well, we are getting close...Tethering needs support from both Bluedevil and Plasma NM, and they must cooperate to a certain degree to register the connection in NetworkManager. After some research and some answers from the Network...
06.11.2008 Sebastian Kuegler (sebas): Embedded Linux
I'm on the train back home from ELCE (Embedded Linux Conference Europe) now. It was an interesting conference, not 100%, but quite free software-ish. Met a couple of nice people again: Adriaan (KDE + NLUUG), not quite surprisingly, Armijn (NLUUG + gplviolations.org), but also Will (KDE + Suse) who I've did a bit of networkmanager hacking with in between the talks, Shane (FSFE, FTF hero), Oliver Gravert (Canonical), Valer (NLNet) and others. Feels somewhat like home (which I wouldn't have expected from a mobile / embedded conference in the first place). I gave a talk this morning, which I found...
06.06.2013 I’m Going to Akademy 2013
After missed Akademy last year because of my daily work I am happy to say I'm going to Akademy 2013 :-) Today I have bought my flight tickets after two days trying (problem with by credit card). Damn those tickets are expensive and that two days delay made them even more expensive :-( The dollar climbing fast against the Brazilian Real does not help either. Well, now is waiting for the bill to come next month :-/One of the things I want to do by Akademy date is releasing libnm-qt, libmm-qt and plasma-nm (new applet for network management). Unfortunately, due to personal issues in the past mont...
06.06.2009 Will Stephenson: KDE NetworkManagement Sprint Day Two
I felt like the grumpy grandpa of the NM sprint when the others hammered on my door at 9.30am after I'd rolled over for just another 10 minutes two hours earlier. The grey cells do still work once you hit your thirties but they need more care and feeding if I want to be able to speak intelligibly the next morning - not going to rock bars until 3am! We've continued planning this morning. The big goals for this meeting was to 'get Network Management finished' and 'make it usable on non-NetworkManager systems' but our discussions last night showed us that the current complexity of the applet prev...
24.10.2011 Plasma NM: what is going on (libnm-qt and libmm-qt)
As I wrote during the last Solid Sprint we are working to bring libnm-qt and libmm-qt to Plasma NM. Libnm-qt is a Qt-only  wrapper around NetworkManager's API and DBus interface. Libmm-qt is the same for ModemManager's DBus interface. Both libraries were created by Will Stephenson for NetworkManager 0.8 and ModemManager 0.4. Ilia Kats ported libnm-qt to NetworkManager 0.9 API during the Sprint. Thanks to both for working on that. This week I have started to port Plasma NM to libnm-qt, I had to do some changes in libnm-qt and libmm-qt to allow Plasma NM to compile against it, noth...
25.01.2016 New Year Calligra Words Sprint
When the streets are covered with snow and ice in many parts of Europe, it’s a good time to sit inside in front of our computers and to improve that software we are sharing here with each other. With the porting of the apps, plugins & libs part of Calligra to Qt5/KF5 roughly done towards the end of 2015, it is now also a good time to work on features again. Given a few Calligra developers interested in improving the text-handling modules, we looked into doing a developer meeting (a.k.a. “sprint”) on that quickly, and given January being a good candidate for snow and ice o...
22.04.2018 Exploring Contributors Centrality Over Time
At the end of my previous post we concluded with yet another question. Indeed, on the 2017 KDEPIM contributor network we found out that Christian Mollekopf while being a very consistent committer didn't appear as centrality as we would expect. Yet from the topology he seemed to act as a bridge between the core contributors and contributors with a very low centrality. This time we'll try to look into this and figure out what might be going on. My first attempt at this was to try to look into the contributor network on a different time period and see how it goes. If we take two snapshots of the ...
07.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): in france
I'm in France right now. Toulouse, to be more precise. Kevin Ottens' (you may know him from Solid in KDE4) living room to be even more precise. It's 6:30 in the morning and Kevin and I are sitting here getting some work done early in the day so that we may go out a bit earlier in the afternoon to enjoy some of the city.I've already taken an ungodly number of pictures in my first day here as I play with my new toy: a Cannon EOS 400. I've never actually owned an SLR before, and there's much to learn, but I'm having fun with it. It's been great so far traveling with P.: we was awesome on the flig...
09.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): RE: Nine Improvements Needed in KDE, by Bruce Byfield
Dear Bruce ..Thanks for trying KDE 4.0.x and then writing about it. It's always great when people try something for a while and then give their honest opinion on things. I'd like to address some of the issues you raise, so let's start where you started:"A more customizable panel": the issues you note, from resizing and moving to not covering the toolbox, are already addressed in svn with the exception of autohiding which is currently partially working in a WIP patch. So this set of issues is more past tense than anything at this point. There remain some burrs to work out, such as not all widge...
12.04.2008 Aaron Seigo (aseigo): day 1
wow. what a day. introductions in the morning, a sharing of hot button issues, lunch, developer meetings, hacking, dinner, more hacking. not a lot to show that's fun and interesting yet to those outside, but it's been awesome to see everyone, meet a few new faces and get the wheels rolling on a number of things. by the end of the sprint, there will be significant positive changes to be seen all over the place. but it's 01:00 and i'm heading back to the hotel to go to sleep so i can get up first thing in the morning.
